Typically I spend some of the year fishing with other Dudds, and some of the year fishing with myself; what I call masturfishing. This year has been marked as one with a lot of solo trips, and in terms of fish caught, it’s been really poor.
However, in terms of gear broken, it’s been really impressive.
Someone asked me the other day,
“If your column is about the stupid stuff you do, how do get enough material to write a column every month?”
I just looked at them like a golden retriever looks at quantum mechanics.
The question should be, “How do you edit it down to fit all your clusterforks into a single story?”
Even if I only go fishing once a year, I would still have enough material.
Between broken rods, broken elbows, broken boats, broken...well name a fishing part or a body part and I’ve pretty much got you covered.
This is why fishing with The Dudds is so important – the lads tend to block me when I’m about to follow the long and winding path of stupidity. But that doesn’t happen when I’m masturfishing!
The last two solo trips have included the aforementioned: broken elbow, a broken transducer, a mistakenly cut transducer cable, two
rope entangled propeller episodes, a broken rod, a mangled prop and a case of sunburn so severe I got home looking like Yoda’s great uncle after his induction tour passed too close to the nuclear reactor on the Millennium Falcon. Mates are important for things like companionship, sharing life stories, mental health stability and memory checks of past stupid things done, but to me, the Dudds are much more important as mortality controllers. Too much time away from collective wisdom sees me exposed to the frailties of my own clumsiness.
