YEARS OF ABEL REELS Quality. Dependability. Precision. Innovation. Beauty. Over the last 25 years there have been many words associated with Abel Reels, but those in our mission statement remain our favorites: To design and build the best, most dependable gear in the world and give world class customer service. Living by that mantra, along with the continued support of our loyal customers, has allowed us to continue to manufacture the best reels and tools available to fly anglers today. 1988 seems to be a lifetime ago, when we started small (relatively speaking) with our standard arbor Big Game series of reels. Back then, our original drags boasted “Stop a Sub power, and that tradition of strength lives on in every Super Series reel today.

2

ABELREELS.COM | MADE IN USA

But between now and then, many changes in our product line took place, and we created and carried a diverse range of gear for our customers over the years: New reels and tools, rods, luggage, personal rafts, cigar rollers, fly-tying vises, wallets, belt buckles, knives, leader stretchers and more! No matter what we have offered, quality, durability and craftsmanship have been paramount, and will always continue to be so. Maintaining every aspect of production in-house, in the USA is what allows us to do this. Although it may be more expensive and harder work to keep manufacturing stateside rather than outsourcing overseas, we believe that the best quality products come from America, designed and created by American workers.

For 25 years and counting, our products have started as nothing more than raw materials delivered to the loading dock of our Camarillo, California factory: the best aircraft-grade aluminum, superior quality cork, and the finest stainless steel available. These are then crafted by American hands into metallic works of art recognized the world over and designed to last a lifetime.

With that in mind, we are always pressing on, finding new and creative ways to bring you the best made and most useful flyfishing implements available. Thank you for your support over the last quarter-century, and we look forward to continuing to provide you with world class reels, gear, and unmatched customer service.

While our manufacturing process has basically remained the same aside from a few technological advances, there are still quite a few things that have changed over the years at Abel. Be it older models being retired, or the introduction of newer, improved designs and products, there is always one direction Abel is headed: forward to the future.

ABEL REELS

What makes an Abel an Abel MISSION STATEMENT To design and build the best, most dependable gear available and give world class customer service.

Abel Reels are assembled to tolerances of a ten-thousandth of an inch, using the highest quality materials, such as coldfinished 6061-T651 aerospace-grade aluminum, aircraft bearings, and high-grade cork. Abel has not compromised on these materials from day one! While much of the work that goes into our reels is internal, the most-recognized feature of an Abel Reel is external: the finish. With a full in-house anodization and polishing department, we are able to create finishes that are both artistic and functional, making an Abel product a beautiful tool any angler would be proud to own.

WHY ABEL? 2013 marks the 25th year of manufacturing our reels and accessories in our Camarillo, California factory. While others have sent their production facilities overseas in order to save a few bucks on their bottom line, Abel has never waivered from the philosophy of completely designing, machining, and assembling quality products in our own American factory. A large number of Abel employees have worked at our facility for over 15 years, and together take a great deal of pride in the finished products that go out the Abel factory door. We are the definition of an American small business. Our goal is to consistently create the finest products available to the fly-fishing and outdoor industry. Whether it’s a reel, pliers, knife, nippers, or an artistically anodized finish, we expect that it will be second-to-none. Our American craftsmen do not design Abel products with the goal of meeting a certain price point - they design them to be the best. We maintain our reputation by controlling every phase of production in our own facility: each item is hand-made, hand-polished, hand-anodized, and hand-assembled – right down to the screws. By eliminating outsourcing, we can boast a level of quality control that others cannot begin to claim, all while doing everything we can to support the American economy.

NEW PRODUCTS Continuing the tradition

Since 2007, we have been redesigning the width of our spools in the Super Series to make them slightly more narrow (hence the “N” designation), while retaining the large arbor size that yields impressive line pick-up speed. 2013 brings the introduction of two new sizes within the Super Series of reels: the Super 9/10N, and the Super 11/12N.

2013

USA

SUPER 9/10N

Perfect for catching giant bull redfish in the bayous of Louisiana or slowing the blistering runs of false albacore off the East Coast, the entirely new 9/10N replaces the Super 9 and Super 10 reels, respectively. A narrower spool width than either of its predecessors as well as a slightly larger arbor diameter allows for amazing retrieve rates, as well as reducing the need to “spread” the line across the face of a wider spool to negate binding issues. Unchanged from its predecessors is the famous Abel cork drag system with its uncanny stopping power for when that big red decides to head straight for New Orleans.

GRAND SLAM

NEW 9/10N + PLATINUM HANDLE / OLIVE PLIERS & KNIFE COMBO

SUPER 11/12N

Tarpon. Giant Trevally. Sailfish. These are some of the species that immediately make a fly angler instinctively wonder if they have enough backing and enough drag pressure. The Super 11/12N answers those with a resounding yes! Replacing the venerable Super 11, and Super 12 reels, the 11/12N is another new reel designed from the ground up, possessing both a large arbor coupled with a narrow spool width. As with the 9/10N, this allows for increased retrieve rates without the worry of line bunching on one side of the spool – allowing you to worry about landing that trophy at the other end of the line.

CLASSIC REEL

New this summer, the Abel Classic brings back the traditional look and feel of an ultra -lightweight Spey reel, but with the perfect modern fit and finish expected of an Abel. Sized for lighter 3/4/5 weight traditional lines, the Classic is an excellent tool for those who love to fish with an externally adjustable click drag reel.

SUPER SERIES

8 Sizes

Available since 1999 in a size for every fish that swims, the Abel Super Series has proven itself time and again as the premier American-made reel. While there have been various improvements and adjustments over the years, there are things that have never changed. Specifically, a super-smooth, infinitely adjustable cork drag married to a strong, lightweight aluminum frame and large spool for increased line retrieval speed. This drag is what makes the Super Series equally at home on the trout stream, the salt flats, and demanding deep blue water: it can be set light enough to protect the finest tippet but also can also be cranked down to ‘stop a sub’ power to slow the fastest bluefin. No matter what species you prefer to chase, a Super Series reel is there to help you land it!

QUICK CHANGE

Super Series QC

REELS ACTUAL SIZE

Versatility has always been a hallmark of design at Abel, and with the introduction of the Super Series Quick Change in 2009, an entirely new level was achieved. The QC series gives anglers the ability to swap out spools at a moment’s notice, faster than ever before. Just a spin of the drag knob, a turn and a push of the center cap, and the spool is released. Add a new spool, reverse the process, and it is finished. Manufactured to the same exacting standards as their Super Series brethren, complete with a large arbor retrieve rate, the Quick Change series is the next evolution in the American quality of Abel Reels.

QC 5/6

The Q/C 5/6 makes switching between a floating and sinking line a snap, and lets the angler adjust to any situation immediately.

QC 7/8

The ability to be versatile is a must, and the Q/C 7/8 is the tool that gives you that necessary flexibility.

CLASSIC REELS Classic, Switch and Spey

REELS ACTUAL SIZE

Introduced to meet the demands of silver-chasing, longrod-casting fanatics of the Pacific Northwest and beyond, the Classic series was created with the “classic” steelhead / salmon reel in mind. As is every other Abel reel they are machined from lightweight aluminum, but differ from the Super Series in that they are fitted with a strong, beautiful sounding click-and-pawl drag system, and capacities for any two-handed casting application.

CLASSIC

The Abel Classic brings back the traditional look and feel of an ultra -lightweight Spey reel, but with the perfect modern fit and finish expected of an Abel.

SWITCH

Lighter and slightly smaller than its big brother, the Abel Switch reel was introduced to be the perfect tool for the burgeoning switch rod community. It will easily hold 5/6/7 weight switch/Spey lines with plenty of room for backing, without adding excess weight.

3.30”

3.70”

4.05”

SPEY

A perfect fit for those on big water throwing Spey and Skagit lines in the 8/9/10 category. The standard arbor gives plenty of room for the thickest of lines, making it large in capacity and light on weight.

CR 14

• Fully-enclosed classically designed frame. • Adjustable pawl-click drag. • Quick change spool. • Made in the USA.

TROUT SERIES (TR) Micro Reels

REELS ACTUAL SIZE

Originally designed in 1992, then reintroduced in 2008, the Abel Trout series reels offers a basic, beautiful standard-arbor reel with classic lines combined with the sound and traditional smoothness of an adjustable click-and-pawl drag system. These featherweight reels offer the fly fishing purist a reel true to the classic origins of the sport, but manufactured with modern materials to Abel’s exacting standards.

TR LIGHT

Tiny trout in high mountain streams are some of the most basic and fun fish to catch, especially on a 1- or 2-weight rod with a TR Light holding the line. A perfect lightweight addition to the smallest rods, its smooth click-pawl drag sounds wonderful deep in the woods.

TR 1

Small spring creeks offer tremendous fishing with shorter 3- and 4-weights, and the TR 1 finds a perfect home on the reel seat of one of these rods. Small, but with just enough capacity to hold the right amount of backing behind your fly line.

TR 2

Most medium-to-large trout rivers demand a 5- or 6-weight rod to make those distance casts to larger fish really count. The TR2 is built for the angler who prefers the bigger water, but likes simple and classic gear.

CREEK SERIES 15 Years in the making

REELS ACTUAL SIZE

The click/pawl reel redefined! The Abel Creek was introduced in 1998, and combined the best aspects of large-arbor design within a traditional “old-school” type of click and pawl reel. It also sports an adjustable drag, with varying tension achieved by simply turning a hex nut with your finger. For the purist, the Creek Series is part of our FlexABELity series, and therefore is also available in a standard arbor configuration. Regardless of spool type, the generous porting reduces weight to a miniscule amount, perfect for the lightest of finesse rods.

CREEK 1

In the large arbor format, the Creek 1 is perfect for the 2- and 3-weight rods typically used on the smallest mountain streams. However, change to a standard arbor with room for a 4-weight line, and you quickly have a reel ready for the larger body of water your small creek has now become!

3.125”

3.500”

CREEK 2

Slightly larger than the 1, the Creek 2 has been designed for 4- and 5-weight lines found on mid-to- larger streams. Attach a standard arbor spool, and lines up to a 6-weight are easily accommodated, readying you for bigger waters and bigger fish.

DE YOUNG New flank designs

Fly-fishers around the world have quickly learned the name and work of talented artist Derek DeYoung. We have been fortunate to have Derek design some wonderful graphics for us, and his Brown Trout and Brook Trout Flank series has been a favorite. This year, we are happy to announce the third addition to this series – the Rainbow Trout Flank. It is sure to please everyone who chases these pink-sided beauties. DeYoung prints are available in any model and size Abel reel with either a ported or solid back, as well as with a matching drag knob to “fill in” the full, colorful picture.

NIPPERS 2012 AWARD WINNER

When Abel introduced our Nippers in 2010, many scoffed at the idea of such a hardy, over-built tool, capable of cutting heavy mono and thin tippet with equal ease. Remember, all Abel tools are meant to last a lifetime! As such, the scoffs quickly turned into respect and the replacement of many a pair of cheaper nippers. Guides and casual anglers both fell in love with the sharpness and precision of the replaceable steel jaws with built in hook-eye cleaner. The ergonomic shape coupled with precision machining in the T-6061 T6 aluminum yielded the best ‘in-hand’ nipper ever manufactured for grip and ease of use. The other, quite obvious feature that helps the Abel Nipper stand out, is their availability in any custom color or graphic, making them truly stand out from the crowd. • Designed, Manufactured in the USA • Anodized aluminum body construction • Replaceable jaws – machined out of premium grade stainless steel, then heat treated to 58-60rc • Saltwater resistant
