8 JULY 2023 OUT & ABOUT
COULD THIS BE
Shops, restaurants and attractions have breathed new life into Battersea Power Station without sucking away its soul, says Sarah Marshall.
LONDON’S GREATEST EVER BUILDING?
OUT & ABOUT
Ten years ago, standing in this very spot, bricks crumbled from walls, window frames gaped open, and dusty cables dangled like vines in a concrete jungle. Above me, where a roof had once been, was a ceiling of fluffy clouds, pierced by four soaring white chimneys which have defined south London’s skyline for more than 90 years.
For millions of Londoners – including myself – Battersea Power Station has always been a familiar and comforting backdrop to daily life. Standing on the banks of the River Thames, its distinctive silhouette has greeted me from train tracks, signposted late night taxi rides and – on clear days – signalled a homecoming on plane journeys arriving into Heathrow.
As cherished an icon as Big Ben or Buckingham Palace, for decades, fond memories filled its empty shell.
The structure today retains its trademark Art Deco edifice, but inside it’s almost unrecognisable from the building I visited as part of a one-off Open House hard hat tour in 2013. Shops such as Space NK and Lululemon fill spaces where tonnes of coal were once shovelled into boilers, while beer taps sit alongside dusty decommissioned dials in fancy bars fashioned from former control rooms.
Following an ambitious eight-year restoration, the new look Battersea Power Station finally opened to the public at the end of last year, accessed by a new tube stop on the Northern Line extension. Developments in the £9bn masterplan are ongoing, with more shops and attractions set to fill the turbine halls between now and 2033.
When a private consortium of Malaysian investors initially purchased the Grade II listed building, there were mutterings of understandable concern. But even though a large chunk of the site has been set aside for yet more ‘luxury flats’, much of the original building – which once provided 20% of London with electricity, including The Houses of Parliament – is open to the public.
Despite the glitz and glam of designer stores, many of the building’s original details have been carefully restored: cogs and chains hang from rafters and plaques on the walls remain. The facade designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott has also been painstakingly restored, with 1.75 million
new bricks made using traditional clay and hand throwing techniques by one of the familyowned companies involved in the original 1930s build.
One major change, however, has been inside the north west chimney, where a glass elevator now whisks guests 109-metres skyward as part
JULY 2023 11
of new attraction Lift 109.
While waiting to make my ascent, I spend some time learning about the history of the power station in a mini interactive museum. Along with providing electricity to residents, the building has performed far greater cultural and even political functions in its time.
In 1940, RAF fighter pilots used the chimney’s plumes of white vapour to guide them home in the mist. In the 70s and 80s, as its electricity output dwindled, the site became a popular photoshoot location for album covers such as The Who’s Quadrophenia and Pink Floyd’s Animals.
Knowing all of this makes my journey to the top of the chimney even more thrilling. Soaring upwards through a neon-lit spiral, we emerge above rooftops to avidly pinpoint popular London sights. The BT Tower and The Shard race to reach the highest clouds, while train tracks snake below. But it’s being at eyeline with Battersea’s mighty white pillars of power that’s truly special. From £15.90 for adults; £11.50 for children.
Visit lift109.co.uk.
Where to drink
In 1946, the late Queen Elizabeth was given a behind the scenes tour of the dials and switches used to control the power station. Several years after her visit, Control Room B was completed, which now operates as a smart cocktail bar. Tables are set against a wall of the original machinery, with 20-minute audio guide tours (£12) available on request. Drinks also follow an industrial theme. I’d recommend The Smoke Stack, made with El Jimador Blanco tequila and agave syrup (£13.50), or The Synchroscope, made with Oxley gin and lemon verbena liqueur (£14). Visit controlroomb.com.
Where to eat
There are dozens of restaurants to choose from, but Bread Street Kitchen is a great all-day dining option straddling casual eating and finer cuisine. Plush turmeric leather banquettes sit below an exposed silver industrial ceiling in the Gordon Ramsay franchise, where steaks are a speciality (from £40). Every weekend, a Bottomless Brunch features 90 minutes of free-flowing cocktails (£28 for two courses and £20 for drinks).
Visit gordonramsayrestaurants.com.
Where to stay
Turbine halls make great spaces for art installations, as demonstrated by the Tate Modern, but Battersea’s best creative displays can be found outside the power station. Head over the road to the art’otel Battersea, which only opened in February this year, for a collection of modern pieces displayed in a fun and vibrant setting designed by Spanish artist Jaime Hayon. Throughout, fun photographs and paintings playfully reference London: from an image of a whitegloved hand popping a tea bag into a pot below an umbrella, to a rose held above a bowler hat. On the rooftop, an infinity pool invites Instagram shots against the station’s white chimneys. Downstairs, the light-filled Tozi Grand Cafe is a delight at any time of day. From £300 per night with breakfast.

STRAWBERRY HILL HOUSE FLOWER FESTIVAL 2023
In association with Flowers from the Farm 22 – 24 September 2023

JULY 2023
Celebrating its 5th edition, the Strawberry Hill House Flower Festival - proudly sponsored by Savills Teddington - will return to Horace Walpole’s groundbreaking ‘Gothic castle’ this autumn, once again poised to challenge perceptions about floristry.
Curators Leigh Chappell and Janne Ford have commissioned over thirty leading UK-based floral designers and growers to take over and respond to the spectacular interior of Walpole’s stunning Georgian home.
The event will also act as a major showcase for a number of up-and-coming designers who are sure to dazzle with their limitless creativity. Visitors can expect to be amazed at the sheer variety of ways each of them works with British-grown seasonal flowers and foliage, sharing their artistry, expertise, and passion for sustainable foam-free floral design.
Also making a hugely welcome return are renowned Hampshire growers Hortus Poeticus, who will transform the stairwell with exceptional English flowers that will fill the space with their remarkable scent and beauty. The Petersfield firm uses homemade compost and compost teas to produce a wide variety of seasonal flowers and shrubs. Hortus Poeticus are also passionate about challenging the dubious ethical and environmental footprint of the many flowers we buy.
Industry stars, such as Henck Rolling - who was a part of the team that created the Orchid display at Kew - and the exciting Sophie Powell from Unidentified Floral Object - who describes her work as ‘reviving and revamping the traditional’ – will form part of the stellar line-up appearing

at Strawberry Hill House over the Festival’s three days.
Powell will create an immersive piece in the form of a floral headdress that will also provide festivalgoers with a unique photo opportunity, in which they can either stand or sit underneath, so appearing as if they have donned a magnificent hat.
Chappell and Ford are also delighted to announce that the popular curator tours, talks and demonstrations will again be key features of the festival. Strawberry Hill’s own gardening team will also be on hand to give expert advice relating to horticultural hiccups; from reluctant rhododendrons to drooping dahlias and glean advice on how to grow gorgeous geraniums or impressive Italian Asters.
Launching the event, Leigh Chappell said: “We held our first Flower Festival at Strawberry Hill House in 2019 welcoming hundreds of visitors. In 2022 it was a sell-out, welcoming over 1,400 visitors over three days. This year, we look forward to another successful event. Once again, we will be working in partnership with Flowers from the Farm, the award-winning membership association for artisan cut flower growers in the UK.”
Janne Ford commented: “Both Leigh and I, plus all our wonderful curators and floral designers are excited to be working with Strawberry Hill House for a 5th year, as it is absolutely the perfect backdrop to showcase floral designs, with all its colour, drama, opulence, light and shadow.”
Visitors to the Flower Festival are also invited to wander around the five-acres of gardens, which comprise beds, borders, walks, groves, lawns and woodland. Horace Walpole was a keen gardener himself, writing the hugely influential essay The History of the Modern Taste in Gardening which was first published in 1780. The grounds have been faithfully restored to much of their original appearance by using Eighteenth Century maps and paintings, as well as Walpole’s own writing. Today it is Grade II* listed and of national importance, as a reminder of a fascinating period in garden history.
Tickets for the Flower Festival are available online now. Prices, tour and talk times can be found at strawberryhillhouse.org.uk/ flower-festival/ Participating florists and growers will also be sharing blogs, tips, photographs and other content across social media, leading up to and during the festival, using the hashtag: #StrawberryFlowerFestival

“Iwas born and raised in Napoli. The city and the Mediterranean are my inspiration”.
“The chaotic city bathed in sun, the crystalline water, Mount Vissuvius, and the wide, embracing arms of The Bay of Naples. This for me is the most beautiful place on earth. I explored all the tastes and flavours from the Napoli markets and streets with my mama and this is what lead to my passion for cooking. From a very young age, my mama taught me the intricacies of perfecting fish, meat, and vegetable dishes in addition to a range of sweet treats and cakes which were passed down through generations of my family. I fell in love with the art of traditional Italian cooking and would often assist with preparing the meals for loved ones at gatherings”.
After beginning his career at hospitality school where he finessed his culinary abilities, Giuseppe Parisi cut his teeth as the Demi-Chef at The Landsborough’s Michelin star Apsleys Restaurant, under the watchful eye of Chef Heinz Beck.
Having previously worked at a number of Michelin starred restaurants throughout his career, he has most recently spent time in Capri as the Sous Chef at the double Michelin starred L’Olivo Restaurant Capri Palace Jumeirah and considers Chef Salvatore Elephante to be one of his closest mentors. Working in Capri, Parisi’s dishes were focused on championing local ingredients, from fresh fish to the juicy sweet tomatoes native to the area. Parisi was taught to understand the true meaning of cooking and can identify what ingredients work best in different dishes, a skill he has never forgotten. Focusing mainly on fish, his knowledge allows him to choose the best way of preparing food to get the most flavour, from grilling, poaching, roasting and more. As Executive Chef at The Carlton Tower across all culinary experiences, Parisi will draw inspiration from his love for The Bay of Naples and will bring this to the heart of Knightsbridge.
Parisi has several ambitions and ideas for The Carlton Tower Jumeirah, and wishes to hero the food and beverage aspect from Al Mare, The Chinoiserie and in room dining, creating a number one destination for global travellers and Londoners alike. Focusing on fresh produce, the finest ingredients and more, Parisi is determined to thrive and lead a team to gastronomic excellence.

INSTILLING THE LOVE OF LITERACY FROM THE ROOTS OF CHAPTER HOUSE
It is important to instil a love of literacy from an early age as literacy skills span far wider than just picking up a book.
Karen Kilkenny, Head of Chapter House School at Queen Ethelburga’s Collegiate talks through the innovative ways in which they ensure each and every pupil enjoys reading from a young age.
“In Chapter House, literacy and learning is at the heart of everything we do. Time is made every day specifically to enjoy sharing a book together, and each class has a specific time to visit the Chapter House library. This allows them to choose a book they can take home to share with parents and siblings.”
“One of our most successful, and popular initiatives has been the introduction of our reading dog, Indie, especially with our younger children. It has increased the confidence of reluctant readers by having a non-judgemental audience. The children are purely reading for pleasure with no one pointing out mistakes or questioning them on the text. It is an initiative where we have seen their confidence increase and their reading has become more animated, with more expression – one Year 1 child’s reading age has improved by two years over one term, and they are more curious about reading different texts. “
“Year 5 students are encouraged to be librarians, recommending books to their peers, creating displays in the library and using break times to share books with younger pupils. This vital engagement, extends beyond the classroom
with regular parent information meetings on reading, sharing new school initiatives and advice on how they can support their child with reading at home.”
“Chapter House is a vibrant and engaging school that focuses on providing an enabling environment which respects, recognises and tunes into each unique child; central to our mission of ensuring each child can be ‘the best they can be, with the gifts that they have’.”
Children can be either a day student or board at Queen Ethelburga’s from Year 3.

SARA WHEELER: GLOWING STILL: A WOMAN’S LIFE ON THE ROAD
RECORDS HER LIFE OF ADVENTURE, FROM THE ANTARCTIC TO ZANZIBAR
Britain’s foremost woman travel writer in conversation with literary journalist Suzi Feay on Tuesday 11 July at Blackheath Halls, London.
Growing up among blue-collar Conservatives in Bristol where ‘we didn’t know anyone who wasn’t like us,’ Sara Wheeler knew she needed to get away. Glowing Still is the story of her travelling life in a notoriously testosterone-laden field.
In her twenties, she began a dramatic escape: pole to pole via Poland. She recalls happy days on India’s Puri Express, an Antarctic lavatory through which a seal popped up, and the louche life of a Parisian shopgirl. Corralling reindeer with the Sámi in Arctic Sweden and towing her baby on a sledge, a helpful herdsman advised her to put foil down her bra to facilitate nursing.
But advancing years usher in unheralded freedoms, and journey’s end finds Wheeler
at peace among Zanzibar dhows, contemplating our connection with other lives – the irreplaceable value that travel brings – and paying homage to her heroines, among them Martha Gellhorn, the ineffable war correspondent who furnishes Wheeler’s epigraph: ‘I do not wish to be good. I wish to be hell on wheels, or dead.’

WESTMINSTER SECURITY ALWAYS ON GUARD
such as CCTV, alarms, and lighting. Also, fences, gates, windows, and doors. A 24/7 security guard presence or residential security team is advised should your profile, status, threat, and risk require such measures. This is an essential requirement for high-profile business leaders, celebrities, political and royal stock. Should the threat and risk of burglary be enhanced due to your career or company, it’s reassuring to know that private security is a tax-deductible business expense.
Summer has arrived as has the surge in home burglaries. Statistically, you are more likely to become a victim of burglary in the summer. The importance of residential security in London and the home counties is more important now than ever, particularly for high-net-worth individuals who are concerned about protecting their families and assets. With the ever-increasing crime rates and a vast increase in targeted, often violent high-value burglaries and street robberies, it is crucial for homeowners to take proactive steps to enhance their personal and property security.
One of the most effective ways to improve home security is to make your property less appealing to criminals by investing in technical and physical security,
In addition to these often-expensive solutions, there are several simple steps that everyone can take to enhance their security. These include making sure you lock doors and gates, close windows when you go out, keep your car keys out of site, and don’t leave ladders or garden equipment out that could be used to gain entry to your home. It is also important to be aware of the latest trends in criminal activity, such as the use of social media to identify potential targets and take steps to protect against these threats. Ultimately, the key to effective home security is a combination of technological solutions, physical measures, and manned guarding. By taking proactive steps to protect their homes and assets, homeowners can help to ensure the safety and security of their families and possessions for the peace of mind that comes with good security awareness and measures.

Inntravel has created a self-guided route through quiet backroads, stopping at a cherry-picked selection of unusual cultural sites. Stop at the Palladian Houghton Hall, once home to Great Britain’s first Prime Minister Sir Robert Walpole, window shop in the tempting stores of Burnham Market and head to pilgrimage site Little Walsingham, where the Virgin Mary is said to have made an appearance in 1061. Take some time to relax on Holkham Beach and give your tired legs a rest by returning inland on the WellsWalsingham heritage steam railway. inntravel.co.uk

DELVE INTO HISTORY
The course of British history hung in the balance 340 years ago when a ship carrying royalty ran aground off Great Yarmouth and sank on May 6, 1682. Last year’s discovery of HMS Gloucester
revived interest in the story, and for the first time, artefacts from Norfolk’s Mary Rose will be on display at Norwich Castle Museum and Art Gallery () as part of The Last Voyage of the Gloucester: Norfolk’s Royal Shipwreck 1682 until September 10. Take advantage of the fact Norwich is the only city to be located in a national park, by reserving some time to explore the wider area of The Broads National Park. museums.norfolk.gov.uk

WAGGING TAILS AT WINTERTON-ON-SEA
Why pups of all shapes and sizes will love dog-friendly Winterton-on-Sea.
By Kerri-Ann Rope
The stretch of beach below us is lined with seals of all colours and sizes, some frolicking in the waves while others lie on the shore. It’s not the view you’d expect to see as you walk over the dunes at Norfolk’s Horsey beach, but it’s just one of the hidden delights the area has to offer.
What’s more, my four-legged, furry pup of a different breed, Puck, has been allowed to take in the scenic delight from atop the dunes alongside me.
Friends of Horsey Seals volunteer wardens are positioned on the dunes to ensure the safety of the seals, whose pupping period in the area lasts from November to late January/early February.
It’s refreshing that all (well-behaved) dogs are allowed, on leads, to join their owners. But it also speaks to the larger dog-friendly
ethos of the area, especially Winterton-on-Sea, which is a 12-minute drive from Horsey beach, and also boasts its own spectacular stretch of coastline.
As every dog owner will know, holiday properties are so often billed as ‘dog safe’, only to not live up to that reputation.
But on arrival at Winterton Cottages’ The Cranny, which has capacity for four humans and two dogs, it is undoubtedly the most dog secure property I’ve stayed in to date.

The spacious garden (a treat from my tiny London-sized outdoor space) is beautifully kept but also very dog proof, and it’s clear some thought has gone into making sure that any potential, furry, four-legged escape artists would have a difficult time breaking out of here.
As the owner of a small dog who tries out their Houdini skills regularly, it’s a great peace of mind to know he won’t be wandering off to the beach on a solo mission.
The property itself, a double thatched roundhouse, is also centrally situated, with the beach a few minutes’ walk down the road – and a dog-friendly, very welcoming pub, Fishermans Return, also just a short amble away.
Arriving and checking-in to the self-catering cottage couldn’t be more effortless too, and another impressive, customer-friendly addition to the stay is the digital welcome book.
It’s packed with so many good recommendations about the area, the property and more, that I didn’t find myself reaching for my phone once to have to do an internet search of places to visit or things to do.
The beach in Winterton is heavenly, with its clean stretches of sand, and dogs frolicking to their hearts’ content. It feels like a total luxury to be able to walk your dog on such a clean beach that is so well maintained.
In addition, all the dog owners we encounter are friendly – there’s no dog snobbery here at all.
But everyone seems very respectful of putting dogs on leads when needed and making sure the experience is enjoyable for everyone.
The beach also has paths that link to the Norfolk Coast Path, so
if you don’t want to wander on the shore, you can head down a path on the dunes with your dog in tow.
The walk to nearby Hemsby is an estimated two miles. And during a look around Winterton-onSea, you won’t be able to miss the cottages in the same style as The Cranny, but situated in another part of the town, as part of holiday park Hermanus Holidays.
The circular roundhouses with thatched roofs are so named after buildings designed in the same style from South African seaside town Hermanus, which is co-incidentally where some of my family is based back in South Africa.
If you fancy a morning trip, heading with your dog to the nearby Horsey Windpump is highly recommended, and it also includes a walk that will take you down to the beach and back if you want to do a longer day out.
The Horsey Windpump, a Norfolk Broads landmark in the care of the National Trust, is also a great location for doing some bird watching, and its small sensory garden and paths surrounding the area are great to explore with your dog at your side.
Poppy’s, a tea room in Winterton-on-Sea, is highly recommended and you may even get to meet Poppy the dog, who it’s named after. It is also the location of the Post Office and is stocked with groceries and some essentials you may need if you’re staying in a self-catering abode.
During both of our visits there, our dog was very welcomed and we were surrounded by other dog owners stopping in for a tea or snack.
The 300-year-old free house, Fishermans Return, has a ‘dog friendly Norfolk’ sticker on one of its doors and it couldn’t be more true that the pub and area is a dream if you’re a dog owner.
It’s all pawsitively welcoming and a four paws up break where not only you, but your dog, can relax in beautiful surroundings.
HOW TO PLAN YOUR TRIP
Winterton Cottages (01493 800 645) offers a seven-night stay at The Cranny (sleeps four) from £638 and a three-night weekend break from £415. Two dogs welcome. Winterton Cottages features over 40 stunning holiday homes in Winterton-on-Sea and the surrounding villages of East Somerton and Martham. All the properties are dog-friendly and most have fully enclosed gardens. wintertoncottages.co.uk

TIGER CUBS EXPLORE THEIR ENCLOSURE AT NORFOLK ZOO
A pair of endangered tiger cubs have been exploring their enclosure as they grow in confidence. Their mother Mishka, aged seven, gave birth to the Amur tiger cubs at Banham Zoo in Norfolk on May 1. The cubs are a legacy to their father Kuzma, who was the zoo’s resident male Amur tiger and died in March aged 14. here are thought to be around 500 Amur tigers left in the wild, with the species classed as endangered. Mishka moved to Banham Zoo from Woburn Safari Park in 2021 as part of the European Breeding Programme for the species, intended to protect endangered animals from extinction.

RECORD NUMBER OF SEAL PUPS COUNTED ON NORFOLK BEACHES
The seal population between Waxham and Winterton attracts thousands of visitors each winter as the young seals are weaned before re-entering the sea. As of January this year, a total of 3,796 seal pups had been born. The number is almost double the count in 2019/2020 when the total pup count was 2,069.
RED KNOTS AT SNETTISHAM, NORFOLK
Seeing any animal in large numbers is heart-stopping. Every summer and autumn, 100,000 knots gather on the mudflats at The Wash in Norfolk, proof spectacles on this scale do happen in the UK. Spring tides send them skyward, where they create patterns similar to the murmurations performed by starlings. Wildlife photographer Paul Goldstein arranges short weekend breaks timed to coincide with the phenomenon, with accommodation in a family-run riverside farmhouse. Exodus offers three days half-board from £579pp, own car required. Various departures in October.
National Trust rangers move into lifeboat house to monitor little tern colony
Three National Trust rangers have moved into a lifeboat house on a remote shingle spit to monitor a colony of one of the UK’s rarest seabirds through the breeding season. Rangers will live on site at Blakeney Point on the north Norfolk coast for eight months, from March to October, warding off predators to help threatened little terns. Assisted by around 30 volunteers, the trio will also count nests and fledglings, and speak to visitors to limit disturbance to the ground nesting birds. The population of little terns has dropped by 40% since the 1980s, according to the National Trust.

Watercolours painted by the King to go on display at Sandringham
More than 40 watercolours painted by the King are to be displayed in an exhibition.
By Catherine Wylie
The collection, featuring interpretations of British landscapes and royal residences, will be put on view in the ballroom at Sandringham House in Norfolk.
The exhibition contains a range of scenes painted in the Welsh hills, the highlands of Scotland and at Windsor Castle, Highgrove, Birkhall Castle and the surrounding Norfolk countryside at Sandringham.
Charles has previously described how he finds painting so relaxing that it “transports me into another dimension”.
He paints whenever his schedule allows and he usually takes his treasured sailcloth and leather painting bag with him on royal tours in the hope he will have time to do so.
His interest – fostered by his art master at Gordonstoun school, Robert Waddell – grew in the 1970s and 1980s as he was able to meet leading artists.
He discussed watercolour technique with the late Edward Seago and received further tuition from professionals such as Derek Hill, John Ward and Bryan Organ.
An exhibition at Hampton Court Palace in 1998, held to mark the prince’s 50th birthday, displayed 50 of his watercolours, while the National Gallery of Australia’s exhibition in 2018 to celebrate his
70th birthday showed 30 pieces.
Last year, 79 of Charles’s watercolours – the first full exhibition of his work in the medium – were exhibited at the Garrison Chapel in Chelsea, south-west London.
The atmospheric paintings depicted Scottish landscapes such as the Huna Mill in John O’Groats and Glen Callater near Balmoral, as well as outdoor scenes from Provence in the south of France and Tanzania in East Africa, one of his favourite places to paint.
In a display panel, Charles revealed that the hobby “refreshes parts of the soul which other activities can’t reach”, and that he turned to painting after finding little joy in photography.
The King admitted he was “appalled” by the quality of his early sketches.
He added: “I am under no illusion that my sketches represent great art or a burgeoning talent.
“They represent, more than anything else, my particular form of ‘photograph album’ and, as such, mean a great deal to me.”
In October, a print of a watercolour of Balmoral by Charles was bought at auction for more than eight times its estimate.
In what was thought to be the first time a print by a reigning monarch has been sold at auction, a private British collector paid £5,738.
Prints Charles has done in the past have usually fetched between £400 and £600.
The exhibition will run from from April 1 to October 12 at Sandringham House.

NEW SUMMER BAG COLLECTION
The Basket Room has collaborated with British Designer, Hannah Harrison for a second season on a capsule collection of handwoven basket bags for SS23. The collection named Watermelon Escape pays homage to the groovy 1960s with floral embroidery, psychedelic colours, tie-dye, and checks.
Co-founder Holly McMullen who worked with Hannah on the original concept said, “I had an idea of a woven bum bag and wanted to create a design that was stylish but would also appeal to festival goers. Hannah took my original ideas and created what can only be described as a joyful explosion of colour and pattern.”
Each bag has been handmade by a collective of skilled craftspeople in Kenya. From rural female basket weavers to one embroidery artist and a small team of leather workers in Nairobi, the bags pass through each of these hands before being quality controlled and sent to The Basket Room HQ in Oxfordshire. A sustainable and transparent supply chain is what sets these basket bags apart from others seen in the fashion industry.
The collection consists of sisal totes, bucket bags, bum bags, and a watermelon clutch. Featuring handstitched leopard prints and watermelon pips, fringing, pinstripes, and tie-dye. thebasketroom.com

Highlights from 3daysofdesign 2023
It’s that time of year when the eyes of international interiors enthusiasts turn north, as 3daysofdesign puts on a fresh extravaganza showcasing the best and newest innovations from the Nordic design community. Now in its 10th edition, the festival takes over Copenhagen’s showrooms, streets and studios for a celebration of exceptional design, featuring the most distinguished furniture and brands as well as those on-the-rise crafting extraordinary lighting, accessories and materials.
Trends? Not up here – the new northern pieces of 2023 are created to last a lifetime and to be sent through time down the generations. 3daysofdesign spotlighted exquisite making skills, rejoicing in material and texture while never forgetting sustainability. Brands also looked into themselves, honing in on their illustrious legacies and giving them respectful, contemporary updates. Here’s the Chaplins report on the coolest Nordic newness.
PK1 Chair, Carl Hansen & Søn
Revered for its beautiful approach to natural materials, Danish brand Carl Hansen & Søn introduce the PK1 Chair by Poul Kjærholm in woven paper cord. Originally designed in 1955, the lightweight and stackable seat contrasts the industrialism of its steel frame with an organic, durable, earth-friendly paper cord woven seat – comfort meeting minimalism. Each chair takes 15 hours and 180 metres of cord to intricately hand weave with a technique that is equally as attractive on both sides.
Fireplace Chair, House of Finn Juhl
Danish designer Finn Juhl’s beautiful Fireplace Chair is back after being out of production for 60 years. Originally created in 1946, the distinctive design was a much sought-after vintage classic across global auction houses, and is now happily available to all.
Exuding the designer’s philosophy for warmth and bringing people together, the chair is for fostering conversation within, as well as unwinding. Expertly crafted in Denmark, the chair showcases unparalleled making skill in its between-legs cross, along with its sensual timber frame.

combines the organic with the manufactured and the playful with the precise. Inspired by the designers’ travels along the Pacific Coast, its show-stealing surface delivers a burst of vivid Californian colour and energy in high shine richly saturated Rock Red, Pacific Blue, Clam White or Midnight Black.
Launched in three sizes and varying heights, each table has a fun-loving, crafted feel which is contrasted by sturdy matt black steel legs.
Easy to move about and highly resistant to wear and tear as well as UV, liquids and general abrasions, the piece can live outside or in, designed to be positioned in friendly groups or alone as a standout feature.
Skagerak by Fritz Hansen - Tradition by Povl B. Eskildsen
Created with graphic simplicity, the timeless beauty of the Tradition modular seating series by Povl B. Eskildsen invites indoor and outdoor use through any season.
‘Tradition elaborates on traditional spindle furniture designs, drawing clear references to mid-century renditions of chairs,’ explains Eskildsen. ‘It looks to the Danish design tradition, fulfilling a function while looking visually appealing. At the same time, it draws on the way we seek to create personal spaces in furniture design, for rest and relaxation’.
Muuto Midst table by TAF Studio
Based around the simplified form of a column, the Midst table by Stockholm-based design and architecture practice TAF Studio invites connection and gathering. Crafted from matte solid oak or linoleum on a monolithic spun steel base in a high gloss finish, the table is honest and approachable, a place where there’s always room for one more. chaplins.co.uk

CHOOSING THE PERFECT GARDEN
FURNITURE WITH BRIDGMAN
It’s crucial to invest in the perfect garden furniture, as the right pieces can elevate an alfresco design scheme to unimagined heights. With a range of materials to choose from, including rope, rattan and even fully waterproof outdoor fabrics, it can be difficult to know which pieces will best suit your space. Francesca Hadland, Styling Expert for luxury British furniture-makers Bridgman, shares her top tips on how to choose the right design materials for your garden.
Rope
Rope furniture is a relatively new material for garden furniture. Bringing a natural infusion to outdoor spaces, this versatile material will suit a range of schemes. Benefitting from a powder-coated aluminium or steel frame, our rope furniture ensures absolute rustresistance and year-round protection. Designed with contemporary elegance in mind, our exclusive Cannes collection combines Taupe UV resistant rope with a tight handwoven design. Ensuring sumptuous comfort, the taupe cushions pair perfectly with on-trend hues of orange, coral and wicker accents for long, lazy afternoons basking in the sunshine.
Rattan
More durable than its natural counterpart, synthetic rattan is the most popular material for garden furniture. UV-resistant and woven around rustproof powder-coated aluminium frames, our rattan furniture can be left out in the sun without worrying about damage. Incredibly easy to clean, simply wipe down with a cloth and warm soapy water to keep your rattan pieces looking their best. We always recommend opting for a full round rattan weave over half round for unmatched comfort and premium style. The tightness of a furniture’s rattan weave can also indicate its quality, with a loose, unstable weave suggesting that the product will not last.
Outdoor Fabrics
High-quality outdoor fabrics can be expensive, as they need to be rugged enough to withstand the elements whilst maintain their appearance. Our Ascot and Fully Waterproof Cushions are upholstered in a solution-dyed acrylic - the same fabric used on luxury yachts – this is spun into a yarn and woven to create a soft and luxurious all-weather material. Breathable and quick-drying, with fade-resistance for even the sunniest days, waterproofing to withstand the rainy months, and stain-resistance so that you can relax without worrying about the occasional spill. Visit bridgman.co.uk or head to Bridgman’s beautiful Winchester Showroom to speak to one of their furniture experts and see their award-winning home and garden furniture for yourself.

Bring a touch of Italian summer style to your dining table
Indoor summer dining... LA DOLCE VITA LIVING
Wayfair’s Resident Style Advisor, Dee Fontenot, shares her expert tips to create a sun-kissed indoor space that captures the essence of the Amalfi coast - the ultimate backdrop for summer soirees...
Channel the spirit of Italian summer by bringing the outside in when styling up an indoor tablescape. Statement vases filled with garden-cut blooms will bring a little magic to your table and can be integrated easily and affordably. Use a range of vessels in staggered heights and a medley of different florals, from blousy roses to bright tulips for a bold look.
Filling a carafe with fresh fruit and herbs is an easy way to bring both a sense of finesse and a dash of colour to your table. Forgo traditional lemon slices in favour of zesty pink grapefruit and sicilian oranges, adding a few sprigs of mint for an easy aromatic addition that will look good and taste delicious!
Don’t worry about matching your tableware. An eclectic mix of plates, napkins and coloured glasses will make your table feel approachable as well as stylish. Relaxed Mediterranean hosting is all about the ‘artfully undone’ look.
Think of your summer tablescape in the same way that you would your interior, choosing a small handful of recurring colours running throughout. If you’re looking to channel destination style, add a few hot accent shades - think look-at-me pink, bold cobalt or sunny yellow.
For a true Italian holiday feel, make sure that refreshing tipples are easily at hand. A stylish serving trolley with spritz aplenty will be a welcome addition to any dinner party, as well as a show-stopping talking point.
Feeling adventurous? Switch out traditional wall art for a touch of drama with a platescaping display. Opt for a variety of sizes, but stick to a distinctive colour palette for a cohesive look. Patterned melamine plates will look just as authentic as vintage finds but will be lighter and kinder to your walls. wayfair.co.uk

GREEN WITH ENVY
CONSUMER INTEREST IN GREEN SOARS, ACCORDING TO NEW RESEARCH FROM VICTORY COLOURS
First it was grey. Then blue. But it looks like green interiors are finally having their moment in the spotlight.
New research from eco paint specialists Victory Colours shows that consumer interest in green interiors has soared.
Using data from Pinterest, Victory Colours have found that searches for the term ‘green interiors’ peaked earlier this month –reaching an all-time high of 100 index points.
Victoria Yardley, Managing Director of Victory Colours, said: “Homeowners are getting braver and bolder when it comes to incorporating colour into their homes and green is the go-to hue.
“And it’s no surprise. Green has the most incredible calming impact and thanks to its connotations with nature, fans of all things biophilic are embracing all shades of green, from cooling sage through to deep emeralds.”
For those who are a little nervous of how to incorporate green into their existing interior schemes, Victoria has an ideal solution.
“The ceiling is often referred to as the ‘fifth wall’ and in fact, these are often great blank canvases in which to really sell your interior style.
“If you’re somewhat in the neutral camp, try adding a pastel green to the ceiling to create a calming serene atmosphere from the top down.”
All paints in the Victory Colours’ collection are low in VOCs and solvent free.
They are available now from the victorycolours.co.uk and are priced at £44.95 for 2.5-litres of matt emulsion.
ABOUT VICTORY COLOURS
Offering exceptional quality emulsion with virtually no VOCs and solvents, Victory Colours puts the environment at the heart of its business.
The independent family-run firm has adopted an holistic approach to business; from making paint to order and delivering direct to the end user, to handpicking packaging that is fully recyclable or made from sustainable sources, such as bamboo.

BLURRED LINES:
Embracing seamless transitions between Interior and Garden Spaces
The lines between indoor and outdoor living are becoming increasingly blurred as our climate warms and most of us spend more time both working and relaxing at home. At this time of year, doors are flung open and we adopt an outdoor state of mind. So often we end up enjoying a garden from a terrace or seating area in proximity to the interior living space or kitchen and although there’s a case for a seamless open plan link, why take the path of least resistance when you can create a considered junction between interior and exterior. Here are some of our top tips for extending your living space into the garden and making sure you can enjoy your investment in the garden from inside.
Let the light in…
When devising a space (be it inside or out) light is key. Where does the sun fall, how do boundaries and trees within a space cast shadows at different times of day. Large format glazing is becoming increasingly popular and can provide viewports to the garden. Creating a view or focal point from inside the house is as key for the summer as it is for the winter. You can get as much from a view of the garden in December sat next to an open fire, as you can on a late June summer’s evening - it’s all about context. Lighting is key and picking out elements within the garden during the long dark hours of winter means
you get the benefit of it year round even from inside.
Continuation adds context..
It goes without saying that repetition in a garden is a crucial element as it offers you context, linking you to the house and other areas in the garden. Considering the colour palette of your materials as well as planting, can really help with this and is easily achieved assuming you select a well balanced material mix. The trick is to review as many samples as you can before deciding what to use in a space. Texture and tone add warmth and when coupled with planting can really bring a design to life. Consider your furniture selection, warmth and comfort doesn’t have to stop at the back door.
Planting over paving...
Assuming it doesn’t interfere with structural elements around the property such as drainage or your foundations, planting in close proximity to the house is a tried and tested way of bringing the garden and the interior together. Underplant full height windows rather than paving up to them, use a path to move you through a planted space before you get to a seating area. Create views through planting from inside that make you want to explore.
