Autumn at Loseley Park
Loseley House is situated in 1,400 acres of glorious rolling countryside, just 3 miles south of Guildford in Surrey. The joy of Loseley House is that so little has changed, for the current house is still fundamentally that built in the 16th century. True there have been minor internal alterations – and an entire wing was added in the 17th century and then lost – but to all intents the house you see now would still be familiar to its original occupants.
The story of Loseley Park begins with the purchase of the Manor of Loseley during the reign of Henry VII. As Sheriff of Surrey and Sussex the purchaser, Sir Christopher More, was a man of considerable influence and power, yet it was his son, Sir William More, also a direct ancestor of the current owner, who first began building work in earnest.
As was common, much of the stone was reclaimed from earlier buildings, in Loseley’s case from the Cistercian Abbey of Waverley ten miles away at Farnham where ruins can still be seen. That honey-coloured monastic stone was fortunate, for it lends Loseley House a peaceful, deep and mellow mood that can still be felt, particularly on summer evenings.
In the centuries that followed the fortunes of the More-Molyneux family waxed and waned. As in every ancient family, there were unfortunate marriages and political successes, times of influences and times when it seemed the family and the house might finally be parted.
Yet the link remains unbroken. The 500 year story of the More-Molyneux family and their home at Loseley Park House continues – and visitors will find it as fascinating and compelling as any in British history.
Comparable with gardens considered national treasures, the Walled Garden covers 2.5 acres and is divided into ‘rooms’ each with its own unique planting scheme and personality.
There’s the Rose garden with over one thousand bushes, the Flower Garden with its maze of pathways and hidden corners and the White Garden that contrasts spectacular, showy, blooms with lush yet subtle silver and grey foliage. Then there is the extensive Herb Garden, the Organic Vegetable Garden with its unusual varieties and, just outside the walls, the wildflower meadow – a haven of calm and tranquillity.
Loseley House Gardens are open to the public throughout August. loseleypark.co.uk

WESTMINSTER SECURITY Protection. Prevention. Safety.
Close protection is a specialist security service often thought to be the reserve of the ‘rich and famous’. However, in the modern world of police cuts and an increase in crime close protection services have become ever more popular with families and business owners.
So, what is close protection and what does it entail? Close protection more widely referred to as bodyguard services, or personal protection is the provision of physical personal security to protect a person or group of people from harm or attack be it targeted or a general local threat.
Essentially, it is hiring bodyguards. Not your stereotypical burly bodyguard romanticised and depicted in TV and film, but a discrete nonimposing, non-threatening, professional close protection operative (CPO) embedded with a family or company that does not draw unwanted or unwarranted attention by undesirables. They are typically from a military or police background using their vast training and experience to keep clients safe from danger.
Despite how bodyguards are perceived, close
protection operatives do not spend each day toe-to-toe fighting off enemies. Research and planning are key, identifying threats and risks, and avoiding any verbal or physical altercations at all costs. Real-world bodyguards can blend in as family members, work colleagues, PAs, or nannies. Female bodyguards are increasingly popular with high-net-worth families for their stealth ability and emotional intelligence.
With close protection being such a vital service for high-profile and high-risk individuals and families it is important to hire bodyguards through a highly credible, experienced, and established security company that is licensed and insured to provide such services. It is worth noting that household staffing agencies cannot legally satisfy these prerequisites.
Westminster Security is a leading close protection company in the UK providing an array of personal security services in London, throughout the home counties, and beyond. Professionals in protection. Always on Guard. For more information visit westminstersecurity.co.uk or call 0207 123 4544

Stevenson Brothers, The Workshop, Ashford Road, Bethersden, Ashford Kent, TN26 3AP
If you thought rocking horses were out of date old Victorian play things, think again. We’ve found the Stevenson brothers Marc & Tony, just an hour out of London in the Garden of England.
Arriving at their fascinating showroom and workshops in the picturesque village of Bethersden, you will be met by Ollie, their meet and greet shihtzu and a huge variety of rocking horses which you’ll want to try out no matter your age.
Traditionally rocking horses were Dapple Grey and the Stevenson Brothers make some very fine examples including the Highgrove Horse, a faithful reproduction of the beautiful F H Ayres rocking horse that King Charles III grew up with.
The range has grown and they replicate owners real horses in Oak. Their Kenya roots inspired the rocking Zebra, one famously adorns the hallway of Claridges Hotel.
The twin brothers have built a global reputation over the past forty years, employing a small, dedicated family of craftsmen and women. Each horse is numbered and dated and can have a special plaque with the recipients names and dates of birth engraved, family crests, racing colours and initials can be hand embroidered onto the saddle cloths making each horse unique and ensure it becomes a treasured family heirloom.
Available in four sizes to suit most homes, some clients replace the exercise machine with a rocking

EQUESTRIAN ELEGANCE
Alife-long passion for both horses and fashion really has been the inspiration behind the creation of Designer Equestrian explains founder and director Claire Colgate. Meeting her husband, Perry in the mid 1990’s, Claire quickly became immersed in the World of International showjumping, meaning she understands the demands of the sport and the importance of comfort and performance of what the rider and the horse need.
In 2009, living in France, becoming a mother and spending less time in the saddle led to a chance introduction to what at that time was an up-and-coming luxury Italian brand... this literally changed her direction in life opening her first shop in France. In the following years her continued work within the equestrian fashion industry in the UK, France and Italy has given her a good grounding for her latest project.
Claire says about Designer Equestrian - “Having accumulated a number of select loyal clients over the years, I realised that I was already providing a rather special personalised service and could see that there was an opportunity to create something a bit different. There is certainly no room for ordinary in this industry. You have to be different, to stand out.”
“I believe there is still a desire when dealing in luxury for that personal service, a personal connection and to feel valued which is too often lost in the world of the internet. We also
acknowledge traceability is very important and really matters to the responsible consumer in these times and only work with a small selection of brands providing quality, well designed and in most cases, hand made products with traceability”.
KEP Italia is my chosen brand of safety helmet. Chosen for outstanding safety standards and maximum quality Kep hats are made using carefully selected materials guaranteeing the highest quality, made in Italy. The added bonus of personalisation means you can configure your helmet exactly as you dream it.

Autumn at Bellmans: From Royalty to Racetracks
After a sensational Summer at Bellmans with the two-part sale of music producer Seymour Stein’s collection, anticipation builds for Bellmans’ Autumn specialist auctions.
The Fine Jewellery & Watches Auction on 12 October will display the epitome of master craftsmanship over the last 150 years and includes a collection of signed pieces, from vintage Van Cleef and Arpels, early 20th Century Faberge to Cartier, all with a story to tell. One particular compelling highlight is an emerald and sapphire ring from the collection of HRH The Princess Margaret Countess of Snowdon, estimated at £500 - £700. Not only a captivating piece of jewellery, but a brilliant opportunity to own something with Royal provenance.
The Old Master, British & European Paintings Auction on 10 October will also be a main feature of Bellmans’ Autumn series. At the forefront of this carefully curated collection is Ivan Fedorovich Choultsé’s ‘Autumn leaves over a pool’ (entered at £15,000 - £25,000) which beautifully encapsulates the atmosphere of the season ahead.
Amongst both these October auctions will
be lots from the collection of the late Countess Bunny Esterházy, an eminent personality within the mid-1950s racing community. Equestrian painter Harry Hall’s work, ‘Kisber, 1876 Derby Winner’ estimated at £10,000 - £15,000, showcases her impeccable taste. The October auctions also offer notable possessions from her mother, Mrs. Etti Plesch, a highlight of which is her lucky amethyst and turquoise Cartier brooch, worn by Plesch the day her horse won the 1961 Epsom Derby. The brooch will be included in the same auction alongside the winning gold cup estimated to sell for £18,000 - £20,000.
Highlights from both specialist auctions will be showcased at Bellmans’ London location as the first of two previews they are hosting this Autumn. Cromwell Place, a prestigious venue in South Kensington, provides the perfect backdrop for these exceptional collections which will be available to view on 26th and 27th September.
The second preview on the 31st October and 1st November shifts the focus to Modern British & 20th Century Art, the auction of which takes place on 21st November. bellmans.co.uk

Resolving child arrangements for separated parents
With the children back at school, parents can breathe a sigh of relief that some semblance of calm has perhaps returned. However, this is not necessarily the case for all families. It is not unusual for the team to be contacted by separated parents following the longer school holidays for assistance with how to agree and formalise child arrangements.
Children matters should be resolved outside of court if possible. Not only are the courts overstretched, which can mean delays in having matters resolved, it is the parents who should be making decisions about the arrangements for their children, rather than having these decisions imposed by a judge who does not even know their child.
Parents may wish to consider non-court dispute resolution. Our Family Mediators are able to see both parents without there being a conflict of interest. They are family lawyers who have chosen to undergo specific dispute resolution training. One of our Mediators has also undergone childinclusive mediation training which means that she is qualified to speak directly with a child.
Moore Barlow is also very fortunate to have one of the few Parenting Co-ordinators in this country.
If parents have a Child Arrangements Order or Parenting Agreement which is perhaps starting to break down, they can agree to appoint a neutral, non-biased Parenting Co-ordinator to assist and support them to communicate, focus on the best interests of the children and help them manage the practical day to day arrangements for their children.
There will always be instances where an application to court is unfortunately the only option. At Moore Barlow we have a specialist team who are passionate about their role in helping parents achieve the best outcome for their children, as well as the children being able to maintain a good relationship with each parent. This not only relates to parental disputes in this country but international cases too.
The experienced Family team at Moore Barlow will always be very happy to discuss any concerns you may have, not only relating to children, but other family issues.

HOW TO ENCOURAGE YOUR DAUGHTERS INTO STEM
Boost your daughter’s confidence
Tell your daughters to “go for it”, says Dr Ems Lord, director of NRICH (nrich.maths.org), the University of Cambridge’s maths outreach programme. “You’ll never be bored if you love a challenge, and the thrill you get from solving a problem never wains.”
Stress the importance of not giving up, advises Rachel Youngman, deputy chief executive at the Institute of Physics (iop. org). It can be intimidating entering a male-dominated field, but it is important for young people to realise “you are just as worthy of a place on a STEM course as a male student, and just as able to achieve success”, she says.
experience at a university,” she says, recommending “emailing people and just seeing if you can shadow someone, even if it’s only for a few days, just so you can get a feel of what the job is like”.
When you think of women in science, some key names might come to mind, such as Marie Curie, Mae Jemison or Sarah Gilbert. But this is just scratching the surface: there are countless other women working to find cures for illnesses, teaching future generations about gravity or making coding seem as easy as breathing.
Women across science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) share their advice on how parents can positively encourage daughters into these fields…
It’s also worth challenging your own stereotypes, with Youngman saying: “Leave your preconceptions at the door, and acknowledge that your idea of what it means to study physics may not be an accurate one.”
“I think I was lucky, because my parents were very supportive,” says Dr Sadie Jones, outreach leader in astronomy at the University of Southampton. “I would say stuff like, ‘I want to be an astronaut’, and they would say: ‘Why not?’”
Reach out to organisations supporting women in STEM
As a parent, it can be hard to answer questions about STEM if you’re not involved in the field –but there are plenty of networks that can help.
Pioneer (joely-to.wixsite.com/pioneer) is a support network for girls wanting to pursue maths, set up by Joely To, who’s a student herself. It provides work experience with top companies, and gives girls the opportunity to connect with female mentors in the industry.
You could also reach out to Women In Tech (women-in-tech.org) – an organisation founded by Ayumi Moore Aoki to empower women to enter STEM, or The Blackett Lab Family Group (theblackettlabfamily.com) – a collective of black physicists.
Jones says parents should encourage their daughters to get involved in the area they’re interested in. “I managed to get a week of work
Encourage curiosity from a young age
Lord says you don’t need to purchase expensive STEM tools or resources to spark curiosity in your child’s mind. “If families are looking to support their daughters, I’d encourage them to be more curious about their world when out and about,” she says. “Take time to notice the world around you, wonder at what you see and discuss what else you’d like to discover.”
Vanessa Oakes is doing her PhD in biomedicine, and is a clinical instructor in anatomic pathology at Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine (vetmed.vt.edu). Her advice is: “Take her to the zoo, take her to museums, spend time outdoors looking at grass and leaves and twigs, let her ask what they’re made of and how they grow. Every STEM field is about asking questions first, and finding answers only second.”
Advocate for STEM opportunities at school Schools can play a major role in a student’s development. “I remember when I was doing my GCSEs, the teacher actually showed us a video about supermassive black holes and I remember being so fascinated by that – and that’s what I ended up doing my PHD in,” says Jones. She now gives educational talks in schools, highlighting the contributions made by female scientists.
If you think your child’s school should be offering more STEM-based activities, why not feed that back and see if you can cultivate change?

PRIVATELY EDUCATED PEOPLE DOMINATE TOP BRITISH JOBS
The study, by the Sutton Trust education charity, shows that virtually every key profession is dominated by privately educated pupils grabbing the senior management/director positions
Their grip on power is most noticeable in the judiciary, where 74 per cent of leading judges (those in the High Court or Court of Appeal) were privately educated.
Figures in the report also show that one in three MPs (32 per cent) was privately educated – as were half the members of the Conservative Cabinet. Even in Jeremy Corbyn’s Shadow Cabinet, 13 per cent of members went to private school. Nationally, the figure is just 7 per cent.
The report, carried out by Dr Philip Kirby, goes on to show that 71 per cent of senior Army officers – two-star generals and above – went to private schools. Only 12 per cent attended comprehensives.
In medicine, 61 per cent of doctors were privately educated while 22 per cent went to selective state grammar schools and just 16 per cent to comprehensives. The list goes on – 48 per cent of civil servants were educated privately, 29 per cent went to selective grammar schools and 23 per cent to comprehensives.
The higher echelons of journalism are also dominated by the private sector, with 51 per cent educated in independent schools. And of those chief executives of FTSE 100 companies who were educated in the UK, 34 per cent were privately educated.
Nearly half the top actors – 42 per cent of Bafta Award winners – went to private schools, fuelling criticism that the profession is becoming more elitist.
“Our research shows that your chances of reaching the top in so many areas of British life are so much better if you went to an independent school,” said Sir Peter Lampl, the chairman of the Sutton Trust. “As well as academic achievement, an independent education tends to develop the essential skills such as confidence, articulacy and teamwork, which are vital to career success.

Sustainability at Cranleigh School
by Phil Leamon, Head of Sustainability and Environmental
Education
One of the challenges of environmental work in schools is how to inspire young people to make choices, and sometimes sacrifices, for the benefit of the future. It can be particularly hard for young people growing up in the modern world of instant gratification. One solution at Cranleigh has been to establish a fantastic pupil-led Sustainability Council to help inspire and spread eco-centric thinking and habits.
We run two special weeks focused on sustainability. Eco Week includes PSHE lectures on sustainable finance, creative and academic competitions, star-gazing, nature walks, a fabulous mindfulness session and our ever-popular second-hand, charity clothes sale as well as the ‘Golden Bin’ recycling competition. Outdoor Learning Week involves teachers delivering a variety of lessons in the inspiring, natural setting of our school’s grounds. Behind this is the idea that staff can rethink how they deliver a lesson to incorporate an environmental context to help students (and them) reconnect to nature and understand how intimately connected we all are to planetary systems.
We also re-introduced the ‘wassail’, a traditional event to bless the apples trees in our orchard. The idea was to provoke a sense of fun and community around ‘eco’ events, to help pupils reconnect to the year’s cycles that sustain us and give them a sense of wonder and gratitude that the planet provides for us, continually and without question.
The Surrey Environmental Action Schools group, which I run and of which Cranleigh is the founder school, continues to go from strength to strength and our member schools are currently working on a display for the new Carbon Zero Guildford community hub when it moves to its new home later in the year. We also co-organised an event with Zero and the newly-formed West Surrey
Schools partnership that focused on sustainability and sustainable economics. It is crucial that young people come together to talk about climate change and initiatives like this really help.
Next academic year sees the launch of an environmental education review to understand better how teachers and pupils feel about sustainability in their education and from this create an even more cohesive, positive and effective strategy for ensuring our young people are inspired by the world around them and are well informed of their personal and collective responsibility to help preserve the planet that sustains us all.

Step into the most exciting school in England
more public school than sixth form college, but smaller and less institutional – more boutique than department store.
At the moment it’s in a class of its own but one suspects that one day soon there will be more schools like this, because five years is a long time to be in one public school, and so many boys and girls are now ready at 16 for a fresh challenge and a more stimulating life. A lot of parents agree wholeheartedly. As one satisfied customer puts it: “We have had four children through the public school system and I think that Hurtwood House is the only one which has really delivered what it promised.”
Although it has all the facilities of a typical public school, Hurtwood House specialises exclusively in the sixth form and the age range 16-18. Changing schools at 16 opens up a whole new world of fresh experiences and challenges and provides the perfect steppingstone between school and university. Hurtwood House is young, exciting and dynamic and, most importantly of all, it is exceptionally creative with drama, media, art, textiles, dance, music and singing to die for.
Famous former students include Oscar-winner Hans Zimmer (music for Gladiator, Rain Main, Lion King) and Golden Globe winner Emily Blunt (The Devil Wears Prada, Gideon’s Daughter) and watch out for Hollywood hot-tip Jack Huston (Factory Girl). Zara Brownless (winner of the first Young Apprentice). But marvellous as the performing and creative arts are, this school is definitely not a one-trick pony. It also caters for the budding entrepreneur, doctor, lawyer, architect, etc etc etc with a range of subjects which, though less eye-catching, are no less successful and inspirational. Small wonder, then, that the world is beating a path to Hurtwood’s door, and one of the first things to strike visitors is that it has a completely different “campus” feel about it – not like school at all. That’s because there are no juniors – everybody here is 16+ and they all join after they have taken their GCSE’s. In many ways, it defies definition -

Indeed, Hurtwood has a file of letters as thick as your arm from grateful parents, and clearly what they appreciate most is that Hurtwood has given their children the confidence to cope with anything in life and has fired up their enthusiasm. “Her mind was turned on,” says one, “and her appetite for learning is voracious. I want you to know that you lit the fuse.”

HOW TO GET THE ‘QUIET LUXURY’ LOOK F
ads come and go, but when is a trend not a trend?
“The ‘quiet luxury’ anti-trend is an understated approach to dressing that can be perfected by styling timeless, low-key staples with minimalistic designs,” says Sheila McKain, chief product officer at Hush.
Indeed, when celebrating classic tailoring, ‘quiet luxury’ proves a little goes a long way.
Think pared-down pieces that don’t shout ‘look at me,’ but have a certain ‘je ne sais quoi’ that makes you look effortlessly chic and rich – without a logo or label in sight.
To master this aesthetic, McKain says you don’t have to spend thousands on high-end designer pieces: “It’s more about choosing great quality and thoughtful design – selecting core items you can use to create a base is key.”
She says trophy pieces include a classic blazer, wide-leg trousers or straight-leg jeans and a crisp, white shirt. “When styled together, each of these pieces can create a multitude of everyday looks,” suggests McKain.
To ensure you get the most wear out of each item, she says to keep colours neutral and stay within a palette of brown, beige, black and white.
As far as accessories go, she says jewellery should be kept minimal with something as simple as a small hoop earring.
If this sounds a little too safe, a gold bangle or carefully selected thin gold necklace chains (styled effortlessly) will luxe up your look to the desired effect.
As Sian Ryan, director of design at River Island, puts it: “Quiet luxury is essentially a wardrobe of styling essentials, where items can be worn in a multitude of ways and span many seasons –ensuring customers get a true sense of value for money.”
HERE’S HOW TO GET THE LOOK…
The white shirt
“My favourite outfit at the minute is a white shirt teamed with a straight-leg jean and pointed-toe kitten heel,” says Ryan. “When I wear this, I feel put together, yet effortless. I like to think of it
as ‘easy elegance’.” Whether you wear your crisp, white shirt open with a sleeveless white vest underneath, or buttoned up nonchalantly, go a size larger to make it look more expensive. Longer in the sleeve, wider on the shoulder and a little more length gives it that luxurious, designer feel.
Neutral knits
“Neutral knitwear in super-soft luxury yarns are perfect for when the days turn cooler,” says Karen Peacock, Albaray’s co-founder and chief creative officer. “A chic colour palette that goes with everything helps create multiple ways to wear.” Remember, fabrics play a leading role, so look for soft-to-the-touch in a smooth yarn for a cashmere cheat – or some texture for your rib crib-sheet.
Tailored jacket
“An elevated blazer in a heritage check looks ideal styled with a classic jean and white T-shirt combination,” suggests Peacock. “A simple look which creates an easy, pared-back luxe look.”

Straight-leg jeans
Whether you go for a washed look or mid-wash blue, a looser fit is encouraged to make them look premium. And remember, no obvious branding on the bum or rips on knees. Plus, if you can comfortably pose with hand-in-pocket, you’re in the inner circle for classy, desirable denim.
Camel coat
Looking ahead and transitioning into Autumn, a timeless camel coat always looks effortlessly chic. Naturally, the colour plays a part. Camel isn’t practical, it shows every mark and therein lies the beauty of it – you’re wealthy enough to fork out for dry cleaning bills. “A camel coat offers versatility and a sense of polish to any outfit,” notes Peacock. A welcome addition to any wardrobe, she says a masculine silhouette and slight oversized fit allows for multiple layering opportunities… we’re thinking an ivory sweater tied around the shoulders, just so.
Gold jewellery
“From understated hoops to simple chains, the quiet luxury trend is about choosing the right pieces, and keeping it simple, timeless and refined,” says Sally Arkley-Wade, head of product and trading at H Samuel. She says to focus on quality materials and subtle details to create elegant and sophisticated looks. “Team your plain white top, those everyday jeans or timeless shirt with affordable must-haves,” suggests Arkley-Wade. “Choose from 9ct
gold chains, stack up your ear with 9ct gold hoops, or invest in the finer details – whatever your style, you will find something to suit your budget.” And select pieces which can be worn with a variety of outfits, she adds. “Mix and match delicate necklaces, stack thin rings, or layer bracelets to add depth and interest to your overall style.”

CROCHET CRAZE How to weave the Seventies look into your wardrobe
The hippy-dippy fabric is a massive trend this season, says Katie Wright.
The surprise hit ofthe season, colourful crochet is everywhere right now.
What started on the spring/summer 2023 catwalks as more of a laidback, seaside-inspired look – with cream, custard and khaki beach dresses at Gabriela Hearst, Khaite and Ulla Johnson – has bloomed into a rainbow-bright riot on the high street.
The fabric – which is created by using a hook to weave loops of yarn – has fallen in and out of fashion throughout the decades.
The hippy heyday of the Seventies saw a massive boom in crochet clothing, in particular garments made from a patchwork of ‘granny squares’.
More recently, London Fashion Week designer Christopher Kane (known for his love of ‘granny chic’) put black and blue crochet on the catwalk, styled with leather and latex.
Singer Harry Styles – known for his love of Seventies styles – has inspired fans to weave their own crochet cardigans after he was spotted on stage in a patchwork design.
According to Klarna Shopping Index research, shoppers are embracing the retro look in a big way, with sales of crochet items up 81% year on year.
The most popular garments are trousers (up 269%), shirts (193%) and skirts (140%).
So how should you wear the trend now? This year’s revival is all about fun in the sun.
A mesh dress or cover-up is a beachwear must-have if you’re jetting off somewhere hot on holiday.
For a subtle Seventies look, team a bright crochet vest with wide-leg or flared jeans or denim cut-offs.
Heading to a festival? Go bold with a ‘granny square’ dress in a cocktail of colours or co-ord set in this season’s hottest hue: emerald green.
Accessorise your look with some vintage-style cork sole wedges or espadrilles (another classic trend that’s making a comeback right now) and add a woven beach bag for a cute finishing touch.

GOING WILD FOR LIP OIL
High-shine lip colours are all the rage on social media. By Katie Wright.
According to beauty buffs on TikTok, it’s time to ditch the heavy lipstick and swap your gooey gloss for a slick lip oil.
Make-up influencers have been posting videos raving about their favourite shades (and fruity scents), comparing brands and hunting for designer dupes, with clips racking up millions of views.
“I think the texture is new to a lot of people who are fed up with sticky balms and glosses, and want something more low-key but still with a great colour and finish,” says Ciara O’Shea, celebrity make-up artist and founder of Proshine.
“They are also great for people that would have traditionally stayed away from lip colour or were too scared of it.”
Unlike the highly pigmented glosses that have been popular with Gen Z over the past couple of years, lip oils tend to offer a more subtle ‘your lips but better’ colour pay-off – or no pigment at all, in the case of clear oils.
“They are an elevated alternative to the Y2K-inspired lip glosses and provide a nourishing treatment,” says Jamie Genevieve, make-up artist and founder of VIEVE.
“Lip oils also offer a beautiful, natural wash of colour, which complements the ‘clean make-up’ aesthetic that has been trending for a while on TikTok.”
Jamie Coombes, Dior UK pro make-up artist, says that rave reviews are a big driver of cosmetic sales: “The power of social media is mighty and when a product’s formula, packaging and results fit the expectations, it makes it a winner!”
What’s the difference between lip oil and gloss?
“Lip oils offer the effects and results of both lip gloss and lip balm,” says Coombes. “It is a richer texture that penetrates quicker and deeper for instantly nourished lips.” If you love the shiny, plump-pout look but struggle with gloopy glosses, try a lip oil, Genevieve says: “Unlike a balm or gloss, a lip oil is lightweight and non-sticky.”
What’s the best way to wear lip oil?
“Lip oils are very versatile,” says Genevieve. “They can be worn on their own for an everyday, ‘off-duty’ look or layered over liner and lipstick to add a high-shine finish to elevate a dramatic lip.” She recommends the best-selling VIEVE Lip Dew in the Original shade: “Clear with a golden multi-dimensional finish, it’s incredibly flattering when worn on its own and looks beautiful layered with your go-to lipstick shade.” Lip oils can also double up as an eye gloss, O’Shea says: “I like to use it liberally on my lips and then pop a little on my eyelids and cheeks to have a uniform colour and texture in my make-up look.” She’s a big fan of one of the OG ranges: “Clarins has been top of the lip-oil game forever. I’ve been using them for years. They come in a variety of the best colours that suit everyone.” While shimmery gold and silver oils are on the rise this summer, the best-selling shades of the TikTok-famous Dior Addict Lip Glow Oil are all punchy pinks. “The most popular and my personal ‘go-to’ colours are Pink, Rosewood and Cherry, which are gorgeous and suit all skin tones,” Coombes says. “Lip oil is not just a trend –it’s a beauty must-have and can suit every make-up preference.”

What happens if you think you have gynaecological cancer?
If you think you may have gynaecological cancer, a million thoughts could be racing through your head. Something that can help calm your nerves is getting the right information about what happens if you’re referred by your GP for further tests and investigations for gynaecological cancer.
What are the chances I have gynaecological cancer?
Noticing something that’s different or unusual to you and your body can be a worrying time. But if you think you may have one or more of the signs and symptoms of gynaecological cancer, it’s important to speak to a doctor as soon as possible.
1 in 20 women referred to a specialist by their GP will have cancer, meaning that 19 in 20 won’t, and that their symptoms can be attributed to
something else. If you do have cancer, the earlier it’s detected, often the better your chances of successful treatment.
When should I see my GP?
If you notice anything that’s out of the ordinary to you, or that concerns you, make an appointment to speak to your GP.
Examples include:
• Unusual vaginal bleeding
• Vaginal bleeding after the menopause
• Pain or discomfort in your lower abdomen or back
• A general feeling of being uncomfortable in your lower abdomen
• Abdominal swelling and bloating that doesn’t go away
• Frequent urine infections
“1 in 20 women referred to a specialist by their GP will have cancer, meaning that 19 in 20 won’t”
92 SEPTEMBER 2023 FASHION, HEALTH & BEAUTY
• An increased frequency or urgency in urination
• Sharp stabbing pains in your vagina
• Pain or bleeding during or after sex
Your GP will talk through your symptoms and how long they might have been going on for. So it’s helpful to have some notes with you that include what type of symptoms you’ve been experiencing, when they occur, and for how long.
Never feel like you’re being a nuisance or that you’re being “over the top”. It’s always best to get anything unusual checked out.
What tests do I need to get a diagnosis?
If your GP thinks that your symptoms require further investigation, they will refer you to a specialist, usually in a hospital or clinic setting. Your specialist will arrange the appropriate examinations and investigations, depending on your symptoms. This will usually include various blood tests and possibly a variety of different scans including:
• A cervical biopsy. This is slightly more uncomfortable than a smear test, but can still be performed in doctors office, with pain relief provided.
• An ultrasound. This would be done to look at an abnormalities and potentially the best place to take a biopsy of the womb lining.
• Hysteroscopy. This is where a long, thin surgical telescope is passed into the womb through the vagina and cervix. This allows your medical team to gain a better understanding of what may be causing your symptoms.
An ultrasound scan isn’t always sufficient for detecting whether changes are benign (noncancerous) or not. Therefore, you may also be sent for an MRI or a CT scan (or both).
All of these tests and investigations are very effective at excluding or confirming the presence of cancer.
What happens after my tests and investigations?
After you’ve had all of the necessary examinations, a multidisciplinary team of doctors and other experts will meet to discuss your results.
If your medical team rules out cancer, you may then be referred to a different specialist to investigate further or arrange treatment for a different condition.
If they find the presence of cancer, they will then discuss the results with you, including the grading and staging of a tumour or pre-cancerous cells and what treatment options you have.
Lots of people are involved in the process, from behind the scenes pathologists and scanning experts who will look at your bloods, biopsies and scan results, to surgeons, oncologist and nursing teams, and all will help to provide you with the information you need to make informed decisions about your treatment.
Once they’ve decided on the best way to progress, they will talk to you about your options, what your treatment may involve and to offer you support in all areas of your cancer journey.

Interior Trend Alert UNMUTED MINIMALISM
Colour – it’s here, and we’re rejoicing! Pigment has taken over the contemporary home, covering surfaces and dancing through rooms with its glorious joy de vivre and power to elevate atmospheres and moods. Be it a chromatic chair, a bright light or a vivid vase, chunks of colour in every size and shade are now permanent fixtures in our spaces, bringing smiles and moments of pure pleasure to life indoors.
COLOUR COLLISION
But how to work this new kaleidoscopic disposition into our existing aesthetic? We’ve long been building calm, cool, collected minimal interiors, often with a distinctly Scandinavian edge – do our beloved pale woods, worn leathers and calm, forest-inspired hues work with these new flashes of fuchsia, smatterings of scarlet and pops of periwinkle? The answer is yes, yes, a resounding yes – and heritage Danish design brand Fritz Hansen is showing us how to bring the two together while maintaining that characteristic Scandi cool.
IN VOGUE
Fritz Hansen’s soul-enriching spectrum of shades has been crafted by an expert editorial eye, that
of Italian magazine editor, gallerist, entrepreneur and all-round creative virtuoso Carla Sozzani. The curated 16-piece colour collection features vibrant hues as well as the more tonal, from bold True Yellow and Paradise Orange to soothing Dusk Blue and Pale Rose and rich Venetian Red and Burnt Yellow. Formulated especially for the beloved silhouettes of the Ant, Series 7 and Grand Prix chairs by Danish icon Arne Jacobsen, Fritz Hansen’s hues lead the way in introducing timeless colour to modern, Scandinavia-inspired home tones.
ORGANIC INFLUENCES
As well as the bold, the Fritz Hansen palette is infused with classic Nordic neutrals that seem touched by nature, such as Deep Clay, Light Beige, Olive Green and Nine Grey. The muted nature-tinted tones slide easily into modern spaces already filled with subdued stony, sandy, snowy and stormy shades, allowing the more pigmented side of the collection to smoothly integrate into the room to build a colourful yet distinctly Scandi interior landscape.
COLOUR MEETS THE CLASSICS
A tip to bringing brightness into the muted Denmark/Stockholm/Oslo/Helsinki-infused homes we’ve so lovingly nurtured? Look to

the region’s existing accomplishments to move forward. Legendary Scandi design objects have the power to merge classic Nordic style with unexpected colours, effortlessly mixing into contemporary collections with their recognisable, time-honoured forms and creating new technicoloured timelines.
THE EVOLVING ANT
An enduring symbol of mid-century Danish furniture design, the Ant chair was conceived in 1952, its curved seat made from a revolutionary innovation – a single piece of moulded veneer. Now released with an upholstered front shell,
the historic contours have metamorphosed, emerging butterfly-like in radiant shades of textile that add new life to the world-renowned form and pave the way for a pared-back collaboration with the rainbow.
LEADING LIGHT
Similarly, the Fritz Hansen Kaiser Idell lighting collection also harnesses a fresh finish to carry it into the world of colourful contemporary interiors. Created by Christian Dell in 1936, the lights are a symbol of iconic Bauhaus design, their geometric forms, precise engineering and uncluttered style pointing directly to progressive Modernism. Originally available in dark, moody tones, when coated in a cheerful new finish Ruby Red, the lamps become more friendly and accessible – a 2020s spin on 20th century avant-garde. The gravitas and historic significance of the Fritz Hansen Kaiser Idell easily grant it the authority to invite colour into the home, the enduring icon reflecting ultramodern Nordic sensibilities via a sophisticated splash of scarlet.

AW23 PAINT TRENDS
Dark hues are set to have their moment in the spotlight, according to eco paint brand Victory Colours.
Sumptuous burgundies, forest greens, brooding blues and moody purples are going to reign as the weather cools and winter sets in.
Victoria Yardley, Victory Colours’ Managing Director, said: “We are starting to see a lot of interest in rich, deeper shades as homeowners look to warm up their homes for winter.
“These shades also fit beautifully with the rising cosy maximalism trend, which has seen homeowners embrace louder, bolder hues to
serve as a backdrop to their carefully curated interior spaces. They are the perfect shades to fit into interior schemes that have been styled with passion.”
However, there is one shade that Victoria believes will continue to prove popular as the temperatures plummet, even though it does somewhat fall out of the realms of the deeper shades that look set to dominate.
Victoria said: “Love it or hate it, shades that fall under the ‘Barbie Pink’ umbrella are still in demand!”

Complementing both raw textures and vibrant colours, Wallsauce predicts hints of metallic accents will adorn your interior design. One of the best ways of achieving this look is with one of the marble or watercolour murals at Wallsauce. Many of the designs have that luxurious gold strip running through them!
But don’t go overboard with this trend! It’s all about the hints.
Biophilia everywhere!
Let Wallsauce inspire your year ahead with its top interior trends predicted to take over homes in 2024. From the trends of 2023 that will continue through 2024 to new ideas that will inspire your next projects, here’s what to expect for the year ahead.
Raw Textures Evolve
In 2023, the industry saw stone textures emerging. Whether it has sculptured our vases or adorned our walls, the texture of stone has introduced raw design. Moving into 2024, we predict raw design to continue developing with the resurgence of marble and concrete. An easy way to achieve this look is with a surface texture wall mural. Whether you want the sophisticated marble look or the industrial look of concrete and rust, Wallsauce has a wealth of raw textured murals to choose from.
Vibrant Colours
Despite raw textures becoming a trend, we also predict that vibrant colours will be on the agenda in 2024. Completely contrasting, this happy trend will bring positive vibes to any room. German artist Andrea Haase has a beautifully vibrant mural collection at Wallsauce. The detailing in her jungle designs is phenomenal, and her choice of colour palette is just what your home needs in 2024.
In 2022, Wallsauce predicted that in 2023 biophilia would be the must-have trend for bedrooms. However, it’s gone further than that. Expect to see more biophilia around homes, especially workspaces, if you’re still lucky enough to work from home! The population will continue to look for how to bring the outdoors in. Wallsauce has a best-selling jungle collection that is great for bringing in biophilia design. Team these murals with many house plants and straw textures to complete the interior trend. wallsauce.com

CLEVER TIPS FOR WALLPAPER IN BATHROOMS
“We’re always being asked if you can use wallpaper in a bathroom. We say, yes of course you can! A properly ventilated bathroom will happily accommodate wallpaper. Embracing a pattern in a small room is great and can actually make it seem bigger, plus it’s the room all guests are bound to see when they pop over, so it’s a chance to have a bit of fun and experiment, creating maximum impact.” - Jamie watkins, co-founder, divine savages

Ethical Living Inside and Out
Also new to the collection, two new designs to the existing Nomad kilim range.
Nomad Letoon is inspired by the Lycian temple, which honours the Mother Goddess Leto. It showcases an eye-catching nomadic design of coastal blue, olive green and the soft pink of temple stone. Nomad Xanthos takes inspiration from the ancient mosaic floors of the temples of Xanthos in southern Turkey. Its muted tones of olive, gold, blue, terracotta and charcoal will fit into almost any colour scheme. Each comes in six different sizes, priced from £195.
Suitable for both indoors and outside, all of Weaver Green’s rugs are child and pet-friendly. Their cosy underfoot feel is as soft as wool, clawresistant and uninteresting to moths and mites, which is great news for allergy sufferers.
Ethical living is the principal value of Weaver Green. Their genuine commitment to sustainability is at the core of the business with their entire range of products made from recycled plastic bottles which would otherwise go into landfill or littering the oceans. They are also committed to championing artisanal weaving methods, creating a range of products that have the feel of wool, yet are water and mouldresistant and hard-wearing enough to be used outside as well as in.
The latest collection of five gorgeously soft and colourful new rugs, all handwoven using kilim weaves, are made entirely from recycled plastic (PET) yarn. To help secure a future for this beautiful dying craft, Weaver Green uses 25 looms to make these traditional hand-woven kilim designs. It celebrates artisan skills, supports hand-weavers and protects traditional techniques. While its innovative yarn technology increases practicality, and tells a real sustainability story.
New for summer 2023, Weaver Green’s Heraldic collection showcases a bold diamond print, which takes inspiration from the legend of King Arthur. These bright and uplifting rugs offer the perfect way to add some colour and joy into the home or garden. Three different colourways feature a classic design: Heraldic Galahad includes cool shades of blue and green; Heraldic Gwynevere features warm tones of gold, pink and red and Heraldic Lancelot has a majestic denim blue and bright red print. The Heraldic collection is available in six different sizes, priced from £155.
These brilliant statement rugs work well in high traffic areas, including kitchens, hallways and patios. Useful inside and out, they are stain, mould and water-resistant and if they do get a little grubby, they are fully machine washable.
As well as gracing floors and patios, these rugs can be used as wall hangings and work just as well in traditional settings as they do in modern interiors to improve room acoustics.
To complement the look, Weaver Green has a wide-ranging collection of cushions, throws, footstools and floor cushions.

Something Unique: Bespoke Bathroom Tiles
Somerset-based tile company ‘Unique Tiles Ltd’ are now offering customers a truly bespoke experience to tiling their bathroom by giving them the chance to design their own printed bathroom tiles. Unique Tiles then print the chosen design onto premium porcelain tiles, which are then fired at very high temperatures for extra durability and unparalleled aesthetics, ready to install.
Unique Tiles’ spokesperson, Kamil, stated, “There is no limit to what you can create. If you want it, we can make it a reality, that is the beauty of custom printed tiles. You can have full control over every aspect of your design, from start to finish.”
Unique Tiles pride themselves on turning the tiling process upside down, giving their customers the freedom to use their own designs to transform their bathroom, rather than having to visit a store and select from the designs which are available. The company are able to print photographs onto the tiles in order to make personal murals, or can work around a theme, such as nature or a favoured piece of artwork, to support clients in
creating their totally unique design ideas. From here, customers can build the look and feel of their bathrooms around their tile design, offering greater freedom to create a bathroom they truly want.
Unique Tiles want to assure their customers that their products are made to last as well as looking impressive. Their porcelain bathroom tiles are fired to 900°C, which makes them able to withstand extreme climates, UV rays, chemicals, graffiti (which can be wiped off) as well as general scratches and wear and tear. It is possible to purchase example tiles (with the price being refundable upon making an order) so customers can see the quality for themselves. The company also offer a visualisation process, whereby clients can upload photos of their space to be tiled, ready for Unique Tiles to create a life-like image of what the finished tiles would look like in situ.
To view examples of the Unique Tiles’ bathroom murals and to find out more about the ordering process, including tips on how to tile without paying out for a professional, visit the Unique Tiles website at uniquetiles.com.
