PALOMA FAITH Interview by Kristan J Caryl

16 JUNE 2022

E

arlier in the year, Paloma Faith was at a British Vogue Fashion & Film Party in aid of the Ukraine crisis. She met one of her heroines, Malala Yousafzai, and cried because she was “overcome to be in the room with such greatness.” Despite the grandeur of the occasion, the party was cut short. “I’m like Cinderella,” she says over Zoom the morning after. “I always have to leave by midnight because my kids wake up at 7 am whether I like it or not.” She might be a double platinum-selling, BRIT award-winning pop star to most of us, but to her two children she is simply ‘mum’. When asked if switching between the two is easy, Paloma matter-of-factly says, “no!” but with a signature infectious laugh. Despite being a commercially successful and mainstream pop star, Paloma has never shied away from telling it how it is. Her confessional BBC documentary ‘Paloma Faith: As I Am’ earlier this year picked up plenty of critical acclaim for its honest discussions around motherhood. Her most recent album, 2020’s Infinite Things, also touches on those issues with tracks like ‘Me Time’ frankly addressing the realities of parenthood with lyrics such as “I need some me time, figuring out who I want to be time… shut the door and I just want to scream time”. “I do feel guilty about that,” she says during a rare break as her youngest child takes their morning nap. “I think that’s one of the massive problems being a parent. You can feel like maybe your identity is not conducive to, or doesn’t correlate with, how you perceive parenting should be. Like this morning, I went to a baby group, and

it was so, well, I was like, what am I doing? This just isn’t my tribe.” Of course, the diminutive powerhouse feels much more at home on stage. This summer she embarks on a 23-date tour with big outdoor shows at places such as Campbell Park in Milton Keynes on July 17th and Hatfield Park on August 5th with support with James Morrison and Eurovision hero, Sam Ryder, respectively. Her last tour in 2021 was blighted by personal issues as well as the Covid pandemic which meant team members were constantly dropping in and out, so she is more excited than ever to be back on the road in more normal circumstances. “There is nothing like singing and having people singing back to me,” she beams. “I think that the beauty of live performance is when it’s really real and true to that day, true to how I feel at that moment. I don’t do fully choreographed shows, they’re never the same, and I think that’s why a lot of people throughout the years have bought multiple tickets to loads of dates because they know that it’s always different and they don’t want to miss anything.” Her children won’t miss anything either. Because they are so young, they will be on the road and in fact, “really love” sleeping on the tour bus. And so will her mum. “She always comes, she loves a trip!” Although some of us might feel self-conscious singing lyrics like “I’m insatiable and I know it’s wrong” or “New lover made me downright restless... We’d be rude, and be crude” in front of our mums or kids, Paloma will not. She stands by what she writes. “I’ve always felt socially responsible,” she says. “That doesn’t change because I have become a parent. I’ve always known what I write will have an impact.” She does concede, though, that she is seeing herself reflected back in her elder child more and more. “She’s very sweet but very bossy!” With the newfound responsibility of parenthood comes a new level of maturity as an artist. That was born out with the masterclass songwriting of her album - which was the first Paloma engineered entirely on her own, and her first to make the Number 1 spot in the UK Album Chart - but is also sure to play out on stage this summer. “Touring is the only reason I do this job,” she says before the sound of a crying baby whisks her back to reality.

he Rothamsted Estate in Harpenden, Hertfordshire is home to Rothamsted Manor. A beautiful Grade 1 listed building that has recently been reopened as a venue. The first record of the Rothamsted estate was made in 1212 when it was owned by Henry Gubion. It was bought in 1623 by Anne Wittewronge - the widow of Jacob Wittewronge - on behalf of her son John, who was then 4 years old. John became Lord of the Manor of Rothamsted in 1639 and the estate continued to be passed through the family until John Bennet Lawes (founder of Rothamsted Experimental Station, now Rothamsted Research) was born in the house on 28th December 1814. Sir John Bennet Lawes and Sir Henry Gilbert together developed a fundamental understanding of plant nutrition and produced the world’s first commercial chemical fertilizers. The house, whilst used predominantly as a family home since records began, was requisitioned for the use of the military in WWII and became a listening post, recording and feeding messages to Bletchley Park for decoding. After the war it was converted into accommodation for staff and visitors to Rothamsted until 2020, when the ground floor was opened as a venue for the community, where guests can enjoy afternoon teas, murder mystery evenings, or book the venue for a private function. Filled with impressive features that have remained largely untouched since the 1600s, the Manor will impress guests and provide plenty of inspiration for any event. The external gardens are taken care of by the onsite grounds team and are currently being prepared for another summer season. The Chef and his team have been creating some wonderful new menus with local suppliers, to create a truly unique experience. PRÊT-À-PORTEA RETURNS FOR SUMMER 2022

T

he Berkeley has unveiled its Summer 2022 Prêt-à-Portea collection – a playful and stylish selection of couture cakes inspired by designers from Saint Laurent to Schiaparelli. A firm favourite with fashionistas with a sweet tooth, Prêt-à-Portea gives a contemporary twist to afternoon tea with a collection of bold catwalk-inspired creations. This season’s collection includes Oscar de la Renta – a striking orange gown crafted with apricot bavarois, salted Manuka honey and apricot ganache, topped with a meringue frill. A hero handbag from Michael Kors – whose bags were seen filled with flowers on the catwalk – has been created as a Victoria sponge with fresh strawberry jam, wrapped in an Opalys chocolate cylinder with flowers intricately piped with lime butter cream. Gucci’s pink silk tuxedo has been reimagined in bourbon vanilla mousse and Emmanuel sponge, layered with peach compote and glazed with shimmering pink icing. This is finished with a thin chocolate jacket and bow tie. Meanwhile, Lanvin’s towering floral platform heels will stomp down the cakewalk made from chocolate biscuit, painstakingly piped with royal icing. Schiaparelli’s couture golden mini dress combines caramel sponge, dark Valrhona chocolate and hazelnut praline, all topped with a shimmering, chocolate oversized collar. Richard

ABOUT THE BERKELEY Nestled between bustling Knightsbridge and leafy Belgravia, The Berkeley is the essence of contemporary chic and innovative luxury. With stunning rooms and suites, Michelin-starred cuisine from Marcus Wareing, a fashion favourite afternoon tea at Prêt-à-Portea, the Blue Bar and The Berkeley Bar & Terrace for drinks and The Bamford Spa, The Berkeley continues to surprise and enchant.

Quinn’s buttercup yellow gown is immortalised in ice cream – chocolate wafer cones are filled with fresh fruit compote and pineapple and star anise sorbet, topped with bright yellow chocolate waves. Finally, the Prêt-à-Portea pastry team have created showstopper of a cake – designed to share – paying homage to Saint Laurent’s floral jumpsuit. An oversized red rose made of lychee mousse with fresh raspberry is set on a glossy white coconut cake, and finished with a green chocolate leaf.

School is Easy

I

grew up and was educated in Hertfordshire and then have lived and worked there for the majority of my life. For the last 6 years I have run my own training company covering the Watford and St Albans areas supporting people of all ages and skills to help them unlock their true potential and thereby transform their careers. Previous to this I had spent over ten years as a director of a charity and also commercial businesses both of which supported the progress of young people from learning into employment. During this time I was also involved in setting up and managing a school for young people aged 1625 with Asperger’s and EBD and I am particularly proud of the support this service gave to all the pupils who attended.

44 JUNE 2022

Having seen both my own family’s and friends’ children receive home tutoring I am fully aware of the benefits that 1:1 tuition can achieve when certain subjects at school are proving that little bit too difficult for them and also the importance of matching the right tutor to the right pupil. My experience gives me the insight of understanding that we are all different and this is why it is so important to listen carefully so that we are aware of the potential pupil’s needs and also the family’s expectations. This process of getting to know both the potential pupil and their family so that we can match the right tutor is what makes me so proud of being part of the School Is Easy family. heather.white@schooliseasy.com 01727 639500 Follow Us…

ST COLUMBA’S COLLEGE

S

t Columba’s College has launched a new scheme of 1:1 devices for some year groups in the Senior School. From September 2022 students in Years 7, 10 and 12 will be the first participants in this new and exciting digital programme. They will each bring their own device into school, allowing technology to be integrated into the classroom. By introducing 1:1 devices, the school believes it can harness the educative benefit of having constant access to devices throughout the day, especially when combining it with the strong student relationships and the nurturing, holistic approach to education that St Columba’s is known for. Digital Strategy Lead Ross McKenzie is leading the new scheme. “This new provision of devices will allow us to educate the ‘whole’ of the student to an even higher level,” he says, “setting them up for life beyond the College in all academic and work pursuits.” The thriving Catholic school doesn’t plan to abandon traditional teaching and learning approaches. It sees the 1:1 device strategy as simply another tool in the armoury of students and teachers to further their understanding and study skills. The approach is very much in the ‘hybrid’ model of device provision. Therefore, the teachers will decide when and where the devices will be used, but they will be there as a constant for research purposes, word processing, collaboration,

46 JUNE 2022

and more effective and interactive assessment feedback. This is the next step of a digital journey that the school started some years ago, and it builds on the success of St Columba’s programme of remote learning during the pandemic. “We found that students who thrived during remote learning demonstrated attributes such as critical thinking, resilience independent learning, self-regulation, flexibility and perseverance,” says McKenzie. “We plan to integrate the best of what we have learned from remote learning with the new skillset required for the future, while building on our pre-existing educational strengths. Such as: independent study skills, excellent teaching quality and, most importantly, strong relationships.” stcolumbascollege.org

EXAM SEASON: Preparing for Results By Lara Péchard, Head at St Margaret’s School

R

evision is in full swing and as the early summer months approach, this year will see the first official GCSE and A-Level exams taking place, since the start of the pandemic. With results days on the horizon, young people are feeling the pressure of what is to come, so try to use the buildup to results day to gain as much support and information from your child’s school as possible. Whether that is careers advice, questions about university, gap year ideas, resetting aspirations or simply re-evaluating priorities. Trust your school and the systems they have put in place and reach out with any questions or worries as they will be best placed to reassure and advise. If you know what you are planning to study at A-Level, university or higher education, gently start preparing and reading up on the course and background. Again, speak to the relevant subject teacher at your school to get advice on what you could be researching or looking at to get ahead. This will also help you to channel any anxieties into something more productive that will help you in the next step of your educational journey. In preparation for results day, get an early night the day before. Spend time with your family in the lead up to the day and take time to talk and support each other. Eat together as a family, do things in the real world (away from screens and social media). On results day don’t avoid school. Go into school regardless of what your results are.

48 JUNE 2022

Find out what time the results are released and make sure you spend time with staff and teachers to get the help and support you need – or indeed celebrate! As parents, it’s easy to become too fixated on grades. Try to focus on the hard work that your child has put into school despite the disruption of the last couple of years and keep the attention on the excitement of what is coming beyond results day. For some students, results day will not be all singing and dancing. For some there will be disappointment. The most important advice in this case is to come into school so teachers can support you. Together you can forge a plan and move forward in a productive and positive way.

DOOR-TO-DOOR SCHOOL TRANSPORT

A

t Queenswood, we understand how challenging it can be for parents to juggle the daily school run with their busy working lives. That’s why we’re proud to offer one of the most comprehensive and flexible personal transport services of any school in the independent sector. We have a fleet of dedicated vehicles and drivers, employed by Queenswood, providing a door-to-door service for day pupils and flexi-boarders of all years. Our routes cover many areas in North and Central London and the Home Counties. We currently offer services to Barnet, Berkhamsted, Blackmore End, Borehamwood, Buckhurst Hill, Chingford, Chorleywood, Codicote, Cricklewood, Crouch End, Enfield, Finchley, Gerrards Cross, Golders Green, Gospel Oak, Hadley Wood, Hampstead, Harpenden, Highgate, Muswell Hill, Oakwood, Radlett, St Albans, St John’s Wood, Southgate, Swiss Cottage, Welwyn, Wheathampstead, Whetstone, Winchmore Hill and Woolmer Green. We are always keen to add new destinations (within an hour’s travelling time from Queenswood), and parents are welcome to contact our Transport Manager if their area is not currently served. In addition, we offer pick-up and dropoff services to nearby Potters Bar station, just a 20-minute train journey from London King’s Cross. Parents can choose which weekdays they need transport and then rely on the confidence of a weekly schedule, but if plans change our dedicated team is on hand to help. five years, is especially grateful for the school’s adaptable approach. ‘The service has helped us because, when my daughter was younger, school transport gave a door-to-door service which meant I knew she was safe. As she’s got older, I’ve appreciated the flexibility. If she stays for an extra night or decides to come home one evening, they always do their best to accommodate requests for changes – they are unfailingly helpful.’ Each vehicle accommodates between six and eight pupils, and we aim for a journey time of no more than an hour. In the evenings, transport departs Queenswood at 6:00pm (Monday to Thursday) and 4:30pm (Friday). This later departure time allows pupils to participate in our extensive after-school activity programme and complete their homework in a supervised environment. There’s even a smartphone app to keep parents informed while the vehicles are en route. For this family of a Year 9 pupil, Queenswood transport has had a hugely positive effect. ‘We have had three years of superb service. The drivers have been great, always punctual, polite and friendly and our daughter loves the chats the girls have on the way to and from school. The school app means we can keep track of where they are on the route which helps a busy family in the mornings. We receive notifications when they arrive to and from school which is so helpful and reassuring. It means that mornings and evenings run very smoothly in our household.’ For more information, visit queenswood.org/transport

THE BIKER CHIC TREND

Designers went hell for leather on the spring/summer 22 runways, with vintage-inspired biker jackets seen at all four international fashion weeks. By Katie Wright Here’s how to rev up your spring/ summer style with four key pieces…

here were different takes on the look too – from oversized at Simone Rocha and studded at Richard Quinn to snug, Noughties styles at Diesel and Dior. Kim Kardashian has been an early adopter of the biker babe look (and we don’t just mean the ‘motorcycle helmet and bikini’ ensemble she recently posted on Instagram), rocking wet-look leather leggings, jumpsuits, coats and co-ords throughout fashion month. Now the new season is here, you might be wondering: how are such wintry fabrics going to work during warmer weather? The answer – according to the catwalks – is with a ‘less is more’ approach, styling separates with more summery garments. Think hints of biker chic tailoring that you can mix and match. BLACK QUILTED LACE UP BIKER BOOTS, £34.99, AVAILABLE FROM DEICHMANN

64 JUNE 2022

If you buy one thing this season, it’s got to be a black biker jacket – and if you choose to invest in real leather you can guarantee it will stand the test of time. Although, there are plenty of alternative options too. Take your cue from Prada or Simone Rocha with a punky, oversized style you can throw over anything, or opt for a slim-fit silhouette as seen at Alexander McQueen, where denim jackets were also on heavy rotation.

The mini skirt has made a massive comeback this season, but you don’t have to flash a lot of thigh if you don’t want to. The biker chicks at Alexander McQueen strutted the runway in cool, calf-length pencil skirts with a zip up the middle. A leather (or faux) skirt is a fab summer party piece. Keep it casual by pairing with a T-shirt and ankle boots, or go glam with a jewel-toned top and heels.

EDGY ACCESSORIES Want to keep stomping around in your chunky biker boots in spring, or even in summer? Go for it. Models at McQueen, Ports 1961, Simone Rocha and Tods were all styled with chunky footwear. Alternatively, accessorise punky pieces with stiletto heels to create an edgy/elegant contrast.

Bridal Beauty W

ith the spotlight on summer brides, you might be wondering how to get the perfect beauty look for your big day. Whether you’ve gone for a Bridgerton-inspired wedding gown, rented a lovely little lacy number or chosen a contemporary two-piece bridal suit, you want the very best make-up for the happiest of occasions. Here’s what you need to consider, according to the pros…

THE LASTING POWER OF PRIMER “A wedding is a long marathon of a day, so to keep the make-up in place use a primer or long-wear base,” says Gia Mills, celebrity make-up artist and founder of Skin In Motion (skininmotion.com). “Same for the eyes – an eye primer will ensure any shadow doesn’t shift. If you have an early afternoon church service, you’ll undoubtedly be wearing the make-up until the final dance, so prep well and you’ll avoid any make-up fails.” 66 JUNE 2022

Sam Wylie-Harris speaks to experts to discover the best make-up tips for a bride-to-be.

APPLY YOUR MAKE-UP WISELY

When it comes to applying make-up, the right lighting is everything. “Hotel rooms can be terrible for natural light, so make sure you check your make-up in natural light” before heading to the event, advises Mills. When it comes to skin make-up, pick your poison – either go for a lighter foundation with a matt finish, which Kerry Hatton, bridal make-up artist at Mii Cosmetics (miicosmetics.com) suggests is “great for all your photography” – or fuller coverage that “lasts all day”.

FOCUS ON YOUR EYES Melanie Barrese, head of content for Illamasqua (illamasqua.com) and Eyeko (eyeko.co.uk), says: “Most brides like to focus on their eyes, and often this can involve soft brown or warm pink washes of colour – nothing too harsh, like black.” Barrese also recommends wearing fake lashes, “As this will really open up your eyes and pay off in the photos”. She continues: “If this intimidates you

Small bags might be on-trend right now, but don’t go too tiny – you might want space for a few products, to tackle any skin issues and maintain your make-up. “Keep a concealer in your bag for quick touch-ups,” advises Mills. “Ideally choose a sweat-proof formula that will last the duration of the wedding, taking you from day to the night – especially if you’re enjoying a workout on the dance floor.” Barrese adds: “I would recommend making sure you have a pressed powder and lip product with you throughout the day, as these are must-haves for touch-ups. It’s really important to ensure before you take any pictures that the area around your nostrils is matte, even if the rest of your skin is dewy – as this area can look sweaty in pictures.”

Understanding Heel Pain

H

eel pain is an extremely common condition, affecting one in eight people. Symptoms range from mild irritations to having a significant impact on daily life. Many conditions can contribute to heel pain, but the two most common causes are plantar fasciitis and Achilles tendonitis. We asked Mr Simon Mordecai, Consultant Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Surgeon at One Hatfield Hospital, the following questions. Who is likely to get heel pain? Anyone can get heel pain, although commonly it tends to affect 40 to 60-year-olds and the younger athletic population. It can be as a result of wear and tear with gradual deterioration or, for younger athletes, because of repetitive overuse injuries. In both circumstances, tight calf muscles are an important factor and can cause excessive pressure on the Achilles tendon and plantar fascia. What symptoms can I expect? Pain is felt at the back or bottom of the heel. It is typically worse during the first steps in the morning or when getting up after sitting down for a long period. The pain then gradually subsides, as walking helps to stretch the Achilles and plantar fascia, but then returns after prolonged activity. There is often swelling around the heel. How are plantar fasciitis and Achilles tendonitis diagnosed? After a full examination to determine the exact location and type of pain, you will likely require an

70 JUNE 2022

ultrasound scan or MRI scan to assess the severity, particularly for chronic cases. How are these conditions treated? Heel pain can be a stubborn condition to treat and requires a combination of approaches. As a first-line treatment, I always advise calf stretching exercises supervised by a physiotherapist, and investing in heel cushions and arch supports. Any aggravating activities should be avoided until the pain subsides. If this fails, then other treatments I offer include extracorporeal shockwave therapy, injection therapy, or surgical release. Mr Mordecai is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon with many years of experience in treating foot and ankle problems. He has regular clinics at One Hatfield Hospital, a purpose-built private hospital in Hatfield, ideally located for patients throughout North London and Hertfordshire. 5 Sofas That Will Change The Way You Live & Lounge On The Rocks Sofa by Edra

Peanut B Sofa

F

ew moments are more sacred to the modern aesthete than the after-dinner flop — the joyous, somewhat giddy moment that comes when we finally retire from our duties for the day. And no matter what your wind-down ritual might look like, we believe there is no finer platform for indulging it than the modern designer sofa — an island of unparalleled tranquillity. And the space on which every Sunday should unfold. Here, we’ve collated seven of the finest examples; each of which promises to change the way you live and lounge.

ON THE ROCKS SOFA BY EDRA

Peanut B Sofa

Conseta Sofa by COR

80 JUNE 2022

In the universe of Harry Potter, it’s the wand that chooses the wizard — just as for many homeowners, it’s the lounge that dictates the size of the sofa. But what if you didn’t have to be bound by the trappings of architecture? What if, instead, there was a living lounger that could go wherever it sought fit? It’s the premise on which the beautiful On The Rocks sofa was built. Thanks to a series of sumptuous islands, it’s free to move in any direction — be it throughout the centre of a room, or tracing a snug perimeter. The backrest — more of a hug than a formal element — can also be artfully moved and shaped, in service of more deep-seated lounging possibilities. In the past, some critics have gone so far as to call it a deconstructed sofa. And yet we feel that would be to rob it of the supreme craftsmanship that has gone into every module. Imbued with

GellyFoam padding, non-slip cushions and bespoke upholstery it is, instead, a soft landscape for living, that encourages you to sit, roll or snuggle as desired.

HARPER BY FLEXFORM When it comes to keeping track of the flotsam and jetsam of lounge life, some aesthetes choose to invest in a cushion basket — usually crafted from wood, rattan or the like. Other more seasoned stylists, meanwhile, know to look for a sofa that can do both. It’s from this do-it-all tradition that we find the Harper Sofa from Flexform. A design replete with sartorial details, including leather-bound armrests equipped with storage for remotes, magazines and throws. In doing away with the need for additional storage, it makes way for what really matters in the living room — a generous space in which to just be.

SORIANA SOFA BY CASSINA Soriana is a lost and found style from the early 1970s. Low-slung and cosy, its generous padding and aesthetic detailing conspires to create the kind of carefully contrived casualness once only found in Parisian apartments. “At the beginning, the workers did not understand that the leather covering was not supposed to be taut,” explains designer Tobia Scarpa. “Rather it needed to appear like a soft, creased fabric curled around this soft mass and held together by a sort of giant metal spring.” Like many of the other styles from the 70s, it sits low to ground — a welcoming gesture that allows loved ones to come together without fuss or fanfare.

Conseta Sofa by COR

CONSETA SOFA BY COR Some sofas like to stay still, striving for iconicity over growth. The Conseta collection manages both; a statuesque silhouette that moves with the times thanks to the constant addition of new modules, armrests and cushions. Originally designed in the sixties, it was a breakthrough moment for German design house COR - a cosy milestone of sorts. Today, it can be customised from the fabric down to the filling, gaining new gravitas in each rendition, and growing or contracting over the course of its lifetime. Could your home use a stylish upgrade this season? Then why not swing by our showroom for the full seated experience where you’ll find all five of these sofas on display?

Soriana Sofa by Cassina

PEANUT B SOFA Is it a sofa or a compilation of cushions? When it comes to Peanut B, only time will tell. It is, however, a bonafide bestseller — the crowning jewel of the Bonaldo lounge collection and the latest sumptuous style to swan into our showroom. Its many elements mean it can be positioned in the centre of the room as an island or customised with trapezoidal shapes to help squeeze out every square inch of space in unusually shaped lounges. A true all-rounder, Peanut B promises to establish a new lexis of comfort for modern homes. One that can be loved, lived and made your own. JUNE 2022 81

Origin Pools

The ultimate home improvement

T

ransforming your home with a bespoke pool house is the ultimate in home improvement. It allows you to create a place of relaxation, wellness and fun all in the comfort of your own home. Origin knows that a swimming pool can not only add value to your home but to your home life as well and there are many decisions to be made along the way. Attention to detail and precise planning is crucial when designing a successful swimming pool and pool house as the process is quite unlike any other building project and requires more than just finding a competent builder. It’s important to understand that indoor pools require specialist design in three major areas: the pool chamber, the building structure and the management of the pool building environment

84 JUNE 2022

(heating, dehumidification and ventilation). All of these specialisms should be integrated into a consolidated design from the start, to avoid disruptive, complicated and potentially costly alterations after your pool house has been built. This is where Origin comes in. Simply put, they do it all. Building swimming pools requires a holistic approach with all the key elements working together from the beginning. Origin eliminates the need to employ separate companies by managing the whole process for you, from concept to completion. Access to a pool right on your doorstep means it’s easy to swim and exercise every day in the privacy and safety of your own home. They’ve been building award-winning swimming pools for over 40 years and in that time have successfully completed thousands of pools

and pool houses to a wide range of specifications. Swimming has many benefits, as well as the obvious, it improves quality of sleep and reduces symptoms of anxiety and depression. Origin believes owning a pool is about more than the pool itself: by adding a spa, sauna or yoga room your swimming pool and pool house could be a centre of wellness. If you’re looking to increase family time, your pool house could become a new social hub for everyone to enjoy by adding a gym, lounge area or even a bar. Whilst jumping in can seem daunting, making the decision can bring measurable benefits. A new pool from Origin provides new ways of having fun and spending precious time together as a family. Whatever you’re looking to achieve, Origin has experienced it all and is available to help you create your dream pool, managing every stage from start to finish, giving you the confidence and freedom to enjoy finally swimming in your own home. GET THE SELLING SUNSET GARDEN LOOK

UK’s leading garden centre showcases how to bring some Hollywood Hills allure to your home

W

hether you’re Team Christine, or Chrishell all the way, Selling Sunset season 5 has us all talking, and one thing’s for certain; the homes just keep getting better. From sprawling mansions in the Hollywood Hills to beachfront properties with spectacular infinity pools, the latest season of Netflix’s hit show is making us long for summer days spent outdoors, and Dobbies, not your average garden centre, has spotlighted ways in which we can bring a touch of the Sunset glamour to our very own homes. Research commissioned by Dobbies found that 35% of Brits are planning to create an outdoor social area this spring, with 39% planning a social themed garden, so Dobbies’ Stylist, Rebecca Stanton, chats through how you can style your space and give it an Oppenheim upgrade, just in time for summer.

CLEAN LINES One of the features that most homes on the show have in common is clean lines and a sleek overall design; something Rebecca notes is easy to recreate 86 JUNE 2022

in your own garden. Rebecca said: “Most of the multimillion dollar homes on Selling Sunset have a bright and airy contemporary aesthetic, full of sharp lines and light fabrics. The patios that spill out from these homes are often kept simple, with neutral furniture and defined angles that carry the modern theme throughout all areas of the home. To achieve this look in your own garden, invest in a sleek furniture set in a cool shade of grey and pair it with complementing accessories in neutral tones. Block colours work better than patterns to make an impact, and don’t be afraid to mix cool and warm shades, as this can help add dimension and structure to a space.”

SHOWSTOPPING LOUNGERS Nothing says LA more than soaking up the sun by a gorgeous pool. While we might not all be lucky enough to have a pool of our own, Rebecca says loungers are the perfect choice for your garden to add some Selling Sunset flair. Rebecca said: “A chic lounger is the perfect way to turn your garden into a relaxation sanctuary and will give your space a similar look to Chrishell’s intimate garden on the show. Take a leaf out of Chrishell’s book and create an outdoor haven in your garden by nestling your lounger in amongst a jungle of different plants. To amp up the R&R, style some lanterns or candles amongst your display for a cosy look and feel.”

KEEP IT NEUTRAL A sure-fire way to get the polished 90210 look is to keep things classic with neutral tones and beachy materials. Ideal for spaces of all shapes and sizes, Rebecca said: “Whatever kind of space you’re working with, you can get the luxe Selling Sunset look by layering calming tones and light textures. The combination of neutral furniture and pale wood is popular on the show and recreating this in your garden will give your outdoor area an elegant Beverly Hills vibe. Keep accessories simple and classic for a cohesive, put-together effect that will add a touch of class to any balcony, garden, or patio.”

INDOOR OUTDOOR LIVING Undoubtedly the most showstopping aspect of the homes on Selling Sunset is the incredible views, which is why so many of the realtors place high importance on outdoor living. A great way

to incorporate the California lifestyle into your own home is by adding a sleek dining set that will allow you to enjoy meals alfresco. Speaking about outdoor dining, Rebecca said: “Adding a dining set to your garden is a fantastic way to make the most of your outdoor space as we approach the warmer months. Alfresco dining taps into the trend of blurring the line between indoors and out, something the Selling Sunset homes are known for, however, you don’t need floor-to-ceiling windows or bi-fold doors to create a flow from home to garden. Simply incorporate seasonal throws and cushions into your outdoor space and it’ll feel like a natural extension of your home – an easy way to get the LA look without spending millions!” For more styling inspiration, and to browse Dobbies’ full outdoor living range for SS22, visit dobbies.com. orking from home is the new norm, and demand for smart, Zoom-worthy workspaces continues to rise. Leading independent furniture artist, Sarah Parmenter of RelovedMCR, whose clients include designer, Pearl Lowe, interiors legend, Laurence Llewellyn-Bowen and singer/designer, Paloma Faith, says demand for bespoke preloved vintage desks and office furniture in her signature luxe style, is greater than ever. “My customers are largely working from home on a permanent basis, if not full time, but part time. Even corporates such as big accountancy firms have embraced the new working culture, so much of my commission work of late has been office furniture. “But forget the old-style melamine desks and boring boxy filing cabinets, my customers want 88 JUNE 2022

glamorous, luxe pieces which are both functional and pretty. They want their office spaces to reflect their lifestyles and to flow with the rest of their homes, especially when working in a multifunctional room, such as a living room or dining room doubling up as an office. As with interiors in general, the hunger for reclaimed, unique and sustainable pieces which reflect our individuality, is growing fast, says Sarah: “Why buy a mass-produced item on the Highstreet, that literally thousands of others own, when you can buy or “re-love” a bespoke, vintage piece which is beautifully crafted and redesigned to suit your own interior space? Pricewise, my pieces are no more expensive than mid to higher end furniture retailers, and that is what’s fuelling demand.” For sales and commissions, go to relovedmcr.com or be inspired on Instagram @relovedmcr

MAXIMUM FLOWER POWER ALL SUMMER LONG G eraniums are the absolute classic among flowering bedding and balcony plants, the perfect choice for window boxes, hanging baskets, containers and flower beds in sunny locations thanks to their long flowering period and a variety of colours and shapes that is hard to beat. Geraniums can withstand periods of heat - even temporary drought - and are largely resistant to plant diseases and pests. Geranium care is so straightforward that even gardening novices can enjoy this blooming beauty. The wild forms of our modern geraniums originate from the Cape region in South Africa and modern cultivated varieties also love the sun. The more sun they get, the more at home they feel and the more flowers they produce. But geraniums can also thrive in partial shade. When planting, make sure they have plenty of room to grow. Planters mustn’t be shallower than 18cm deep and there should be a minimum distance of 20cm between plants. In order to remain healthy, hardy and producing new flowers over many months, they need plenty of nutrients. That is why they are geraniums are known as ‘heavy feeders’. If you plant them in prefertilised potting compost, they can usually cover their needs in the first few weeks completely from the nutrients they have on hand. If you use a slowrelease fertiliser, this can be the case for several months. At some point, however, the nutrients will be exhausted, so additional fertilising becomes

96 JUNE 2022

necessary. The composition of special geranium fertiliser is perfectly adapted to the needs of this balcony beauty. A good, natural geranium fertiliser is coffee grounds, as these contain just the right mix of potassium, phosphorus and nitrogen to provide all the nutrients geraniums need for optimal growth. products have increased by 71% over the last 5 years. Naturewall, the designers of Scandi-inspired wall panels, are committed to ensuring products are not only style-conscious but sustainable, with a variety of eco-friendly, easy-to-install designs. Manufactured by craftsmen in the UK using highquality materials, each range has its own story. The Reclaimed Pine Planks are made from 100% recycled pine that was previously used as snow fencing, which has naturally weathered in harsh environments, creating an authentic product that adds distinctive texture and character. The 3D Java Teak Panels are entirely crafted from used Javanese houses and boats, meaning no trees are cut down to produce the panels making them 100% sustainable. The SlatWall panels are the perfect accompaniment for eco-friendly furnishings and home styling. This popular design used over 3 million recycled plastic bottles in 2021 to create the PET felt used for the acoustic backing that provides class A absorption. AN INDUSTRIAL VIBE

NEW COLLECTION FROM MODISH LIVING

A

true fusion of function and form, industrial design celebrates practicality and style and the new Ironbridge Industrial collection from Modish Living embodies all these qualities. Crafted in 100% FSC certified reclaimed wood the Ironbridge Industrial collection celebrates the imperfect and embraces signs of rugged wear and tear, whilst the unfinished aesthetic adds a distinct rustic vibe. Nothing is concealed or hidden with good industrial design and each piece in the Ironbridge Industrial collection exposes all the individual character, history and natural flawed beauty of genuine reclaimed wood. Whether that’s the Ironbridge Industrial Reclaimed Wood Sideboard with the knots and grains showcased or the Ironbridge Industrial Reclaimed Wood Dining Table with its black steel spider leg contrasting against the rustic reclaimed wood, this collection is as unique as they come.

Ironbridge Industrial Reclaimed Wood Dining Table With an eye-catching central solid star-shaped black steel leg, this industrial dining table marries together the two key components that typify the industrial style - the beautiful combination of rugged and grainy textures contrasting with a smooth metal finish. Ironbridge Industrial Extending Reclaimed Wood Dining Table There’s a lot going on with this extendable dining table. Full of character, history, narrative and practicality it will elevate the industrial mood in your dining room in an instance. Available in two sizes, the smooth concealed butterfly mechanism makes quick and light work of extending the table, whilst the exposed black powder-coated metal bolts, X shaped legs and central bar add authenticity to this industrial piece. Pair the matching Ironbridge Industrial Reclaimed Wood Dining Bench with the dining tables for a cohesive industrial look. Ironbridge Industrial Reclaimed Wood Sideboard A hybrid of industrial and rustic, this sideboard is part industrial, part farmhouse. The eye-catching block pattern of the reclaimed wood gives the

106 JUNE 2022

piece a barn door feel, whilst the sleek black metal handles and feet bring in a loft-style mood. Featuring plenty of storage in three tall and deep cupboards, this is storage at its finest. Ironbridge Industrial Reclaimed Wood TV Unit Stylish, practical and functional, this modern media unit has everything you would expect from industrial furniture. As with all the furniture in the Ironbridge Industrial collection, it is the reclaimed wood that first appeals. Unrefined and perfectly imperfect, this unit features two open shelves and two drawers with the black steel drawer handles and unit legs bringing in the industrial good looks. modishliving.co.uk

Is it time to invest?

A

s we’ve seen the world heading slowly back to the normality we once knew, the property market has seen a significant rise and demand on property searches that are within easy access of train stations. With working from home for part or majority of the week also being the new norm, commuters are seeking that perfect work life balance that suburban towns have to offer, being within easy access of the city whilst still having the countryside right on the doorstep has proved to be the most favourable location in the current market. Average rents currently vary from £825 to £1,800 pcm depending on property type with average yields of between 4 – 5 %. Zoopla are predicting that average rental prices across the country could rise by another 4.5 per cent in 2022. Here at Imagine over the first quarter of 2022, we’ve had just under 2,500 new potential tenants contact us so you can see how this ‘landlord’s market’ is very much relevant locally. While we’ve seen a high demand vs a low supply of rental properties on the market, it’s driving landlords to look to expand their portfolios. Many landlords are on the hunt for properties in the suburban towns outside London with greater outdoor space, larger living areas, off street parking and cheaper than London price tags, while still remaining within close proximity of good transport links. Renowned for their high specification and meticulous attention to detail, multi award-winning developer, London Square, are proud to present their first development in North Watford; London Square Watford. This exclusive gated development is perfectly placed for commuters and boasts spacious interiors and private patio areas. A luxury London label, with a Watford price tag. London Square Watford offers a stylish collection of one and two bedroom apartments in a first-class location, not far from the flourishing town centre, and with parking. All these homes offer spacious living featuring a high specification kitchen with integrated appliances and designer bathrooms. Pricing from £309,995. The sales and marketing suite is available to view by appointment only. Book your appointment by calling Imagine Land and New Homes on 01923 608373. 108 JUNE 2022

Flexibility with personal care Residents can access care, should they need it,

110 JUNE 2022

By opting for shared ownership, prospective residents can purchase a quality apartment at less than the market value. This is possible thanks to bpha retaining part ownership. “This is a great way to free up capital to make life easier or to take up the opportunities in life that wouldn’t otherwise be available,” say bpha. Apartments at Eywood House are ready to move into and are valued from £206,250 for a 75 per cent share, with the remaining share owned by bpha. A monthly service charge also applies, and you will need to factor in any care costs. Eywood House offers a range of amenities and facilities on site including a communal garden and terrace which will provide an opportunity for staff and residents to meet, dine outdoors and participate in external group activities. Residents can enjoy their privacy and independence, with the reassurance of care and support when necessary. But you will need to hurry as Eywood House has been so popular there is only one apartment left. Apartment 32 is on the top floor with a balcony. There is a final open event on Saturday 11th June 10am – 4pm.

TIMELESS

STYLE Dial up your decor with a neutral palette By Sam Wylie-Harris

W

hen it comes to stylish simplicity, neutrals gives us the freedom to play with paint finishes and layer natural textures that can be tweaked and tailored to create the perfect backdrop – without the worry of making a ‘big mistake’. After all, a pale silhouette can be styled up with a shot of colour if you think your beige landscape is, well, too beige. And ivory soft furnishings blend beautifully with pastels, if your dark woods and dove greys call for a sweep of blush. Easy-on-theeye neutrals certainly don’t need to be bland and boring.

HERE’S HOW TO ECHO A RELAXED SCHEME WITH RICH TAUPES, TWOTONE NEUTRALS AND A WASH OF WHITE… TOP LEFT: Battersea Easy Fit Pendant Shades – Domed, £120, and Round, £100 (other items from a selection), Garden Trading When you want to switch up your summer lighting, a Scandi style woven rattan shade will hang beautifully among your bleached woods, 112 JUNE 2022

BOTTOM OF FIRST PAGE: Benjamin Moore Colour of the Year 2022 – October Mist 1495 – Aura Matte, from £32, Benjamin Moore Sage green has been trending for a couple of years now and has the potential to make any space look clean and fresh – one of the reasons designers love it. This gentle shade evokes a sense of calm and we’re big fans of the split-wall paint effect, teamed with ivory and natural materials for a soothing atmosphere and crisp, inviting aesthetic. TOP LEFT: Small Glazed Decorative Jug, £15; Terracotta Citronella 3 Wick Candle, £12.50, and 5 Wick Sand Blast Citronella Candle, £29.50, Marks & Spencer Putting the flair into al fresco, this trendy jug vase styled with potted outdoor candles looks gorgeous – and with the gentle scent of citronella and green tea wafting through the air, hints at faraway places and wellness retreats

ABOVE: Safi Fringed Pyramid Natural Rug, from £59.99, Carpetright Whether you have wooden flooring or carpeting, there’s nothing like a throw rug to create a focal point – not to mention the barefoot luxury of sinking your toes into its soft weave. Holwell Dinner Plate – White, £18; Side Plate – Tarn Blue, £12, and Side Bowl – White, £12 (other items from a selection), Garden Trading Much as we love a buff tablescape, this contemporary tableware features a pale blue glaze as well as classic white when you want to break up a panoply of beige.
