FALL GLOSSARY TERMS

Jacquard The jacquard loom was invented by Joseph Marie Jacquard in 1801. It goes beyond simple warp and weft weaving and creates complex patterns such as brocade, damask and matelasse. Bouclé A novelty yarn with a looped or curly ply that creates a textured appearance and plushy feel. Loops may be small or large, and they can be made from wool, cotton, silk, linen or a combination of fibers.

Plaited A knit made with two sets of needles and two yarns joined together by interlocking stitches. The result is a fabric with double thickness and extra body. We typically use a different color for the front and the back. The yarns peek through both sides, creating a unique color effect.

Felt Fabrics are felted by locking fibers together using heat, moisture and pressure. We felt knits to add structure for a cozy, sweatery surface.

Double-face A fabric in which two yarns, often of different colors or fibers, are woven together to create one cloth with two finished sides. Because double-faced weaves have no “back” or “wrong” side, they are frequently used to make blankets and scarves.

Herringbone A V-shaped weaving pattern, so called because it resembles the bone structure of a herring. It’s a close cousin to chevron, but is differentiated by parallel lines that appear noncontinuous, like a “broken” zigzag. Herringbone weaves are traditionally used for suiting.

Undyed Describes a fabric that has not been artificially colored or bleached, and is free of the chemicals typically used in the dyeing process. Undyed cotton is usually beige. Undyed cashmere, right, reflects the colors of cashmere goats and has a more sensuous feel because it uses fewer chemicals.
