fishpondsvoice We’re streets ahead in our community GETTING to know our neighbours benefits people of all ages, as our feature on pages 14 and 15 shows. The Playing Out initiative in Hillfields is proving a great success at bringing children and their parents together in their community. Meanwhile, the Age Friendly Streets programme from Streets Alive and supported by the Greater Fishponds Neighbourhood Partnership is such a great idea for reducing isolation and bridging the generation gap. We urge all our readers to get involved with “small acts of neighbourliness”. They can make a big difference!

Have your say on former tile depot WOULD you like to see the former tile depot on Fishponds Road turned into a community space for markets, offices, art studios and leisure activities? Do you know a secret millionaire or philanthropist who would like to back such a plan? If so, the group campaigning to prevent the disused warehouse becoming a drive-through McDonald’s would love to hear from you. Louise Lowman, one of the protesters, said that local people, consulted through surveys and discussion groups, had come up with these suggested uses for the site as facilities that the area currently lacks. “We would be glad to hear from anyone who would like to invest in something that would benefit our community,” she said. The group is also hoping for further support from the Mayor of Bristol, George Ferguson. Since they won their decisive victory over the fastfood giant in February, when Bristol City Council planners turned down the takeaway plans, group members have looked after the site, decorating it with bunting and artwork and planting flowers. The protesters expect that McDonald’s will appeal. It has to do this within six months of the refusal. The company told the Voice last week that it was still keeping all options open and would make a decision in a few weeks’ time. Mrs Lowman said: “It is almost inevitable, judging by the company’s business operations pattern across the rest of the UK, that they will

move to appeal the decision, which they will be required to do by August 5. “The Say No to McDonald’s in Fishponds team continues to actively work to engage the community in trying to prevent such a large inappropriate development in a residential area that would also have a huge impact on anyone using Fishponds Road, whether driving, cycling or as a pedestrian. Since the refusal there have already been at least four food based retailers opened on the high street and there are plans for at least three more.” McDonald’s will only be able to appeal on the grounds that were given for refusal: road safety and “odour, noise and light” pollution. The campaigners hope to strengthen their case on the latter issue by persuading Bristol City Council to increase the exclusion zone around schools for fastfood outlets from 400m to 800m and they are urging residents to sign their online petition. They said in a statement: “We won the battle, but the war goes on. Remember if this McDonald’s goes ahead, it sets a dangerous precedent throughout the whole of Bristol and surrounding areas forcing the council to give the green light to fast food restaurants and drivethroughs anywhere in residential areas, from Southville and Clifton to Downend and Horfield and beyond. There are many other sites that fit the requirements for a McDonald’s drive through, needing only 0.25 acre and access to a main road such as the A38, A420 or A431. Would you want one opposite your house or near to your child’s school?”

A FISHPONDS cafe which opened its doors just six months ago is already proving a base for community life. The Kingfisher Cafe, in the former Bottoms Up in Straits Parade, was opened by friends Sarah Baird and Jane Rose with the idea of running a friendly community cafe which could host events to be enjoyed by the neighbourhood. A recent night market selling wares from local artists and craft makers proved a huge success as did the Fishponds Crafting Bee, which will return as a regular event. Cafe assistant manager and event co-ordinator Tessa Trevitt said she wasn’t sure how the night market would take off but it went down well with visitors. “We had home-made soaps which were really beautiful and lotions which included one for problem skins. There was a woman who brought in items for crafting like buttons and ribbons. We also had a local illustrator who does fantastic cards and prints, someone with silver jewellery and artists selling their paintings. “It went really well especially as it was our first event.” The Crafting Bee, on June 16, attracted around 20 people who visited the cafe to carry out their craft whilst meeting new people. This event will now take place on the first and third Tuesday of the month from 7-9pm with the

Kingfisher launches night market exception of July 7. Tessa, who is the daughter of coowner Jane, said: “It was really lovely. There were about 20 people who seemed to sit together depending on the craft they were doing. There was a woman painting, someone making children’s tutus, people knitting and crocheting. It was just really lovely to see. “People might not do crafting at home but by getting together like this they get the opportunity to focus on a craft and socialise at the same time. Everyone was really chatty and no-one was sat of their own.” There are also plans for a pamper event (July 7), an evening of story telling (July 13), regular open mic nights (next one July 16) and even an evening with a psychic medium (July 10). Future plans include monthly quiz nights. Tessa said she was delighted how quickly the cafe had established itself in community life in Fishponds. “The cafe is fitting in really well,” she said. “We’re trying to host a selection of events which hopefully won’t all cater for one group of people. We are specifically doing a whole range of events so that everybody can find something they like.

EDA

“We’re branching out with music events too, so there’s something for everyone.” The cafe is also behind a drive to resurrect a farmers’ market in Straits Parade and are asking people who are proud of their produce to get in touch. They are looking for people who

sell various products, from cheese and meats to home-made pickles but the products must be sourced locally. To contact the cafe or to find out more about any of the events mentioned, visit the Kingfisher Cafe’s Facebook page.

Amir awarded MBE in honours list AN INSPIRATIONAL Scout leader whose work covers the Fishponds area has been recognised in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list. Amir Cheema, a volunteer from Avon County Scouts, has been awarded an MBE for services to young people in the Scouting movement. Amir has worked tirelessly for the last 16 years to ensure the development of Scouting within the Muslim community. Since establishing the first Muslim Scout Fellowship in Bristol, more than 20 Scout groups have opened across the UK. He is District Commissioner for Brunel District which covers Fishponds and much of inner-city Bristol, where he has worked hard to achieve inclusion. Amir began volunteering at Scouts after seeing the ‘lifeenhancing’ opportunities his own children benefited from. Now, he travels across the country helping develop new groups by providing training to communities who might just be getting Scouting established. Locally Amir has helped membership grow significantly and has launched an adventurous

activities provision for young people. On a national level, he is deputy chairman of the UK Muslim Scout Fellowship which aims to ensure that Scouting is inclusive of the needs of the Muslim community and remove any barriers to a young person’s development in Scouting. Amir said: “It’s a massive privilege to accept this award on behalf of the fantastic volunteers from the Muslim Scout Fellowship and my Brunel Scout District, who work tirelessly to help young people experience the adventure of a lifetime. “Helping young people grow and develop through adventurous, fun and purposeful activity is the best way to develop a peaceful and productive society. I would love to see all young people develop to be their best.” Wayne Bulpitt, The Scout Association’s UK Chief Commissioner, said it is thanks to Amir lots of young people have been able to become part of the movement who might otherwise not have been able to. He said: “Amir is a beacon of how we can integrate different communities with each other to give young people a balanced programme of Scouting, which is as

successful today as it was when the Movement was founded 108 years ago. He gives his time, his expertise and his passion to so many others.” Amir is among 23 Scouting volunteers to be recognised in this year’s honours list, in which the Queen has recognised just over 1,000 people nationwide, mainly for outstanding work in their

5

communities. It is not the first time Amir has been presented with an award for his work. Last year Prime Minister David Cameron presented him with the Points of Light award for his outstanding commitment to volunteering and transforming the lives of young people.

Local schools unveil their Shaun’s

EVERY child at Chester Park Infant School worked on “Counting Sheep” for the school’s Shaun statue. The model sheep is covered with numbers, mathematical symbols and number problems to solve. Head teacher Susan Tyte said: “The school was recently visited by one of Her Majesty’s Inspectors who commented in her report that the school has a rich curriculum which is used to develop challenging learning opportunities. Shaun is a fun way to teach children about maths.” Begbrook Primary Academy unveiled its Shaun the Sheep, which has a rainbow theme, and Chester Park Junior School’s statue is also very colourful, being covered in loom bands. * Has your school or nursery decorated its own Shaun? Caroline still making a difference 10 years on

WHEN young midwife Caroline Thomas, from Frenchay, went to work in Madagascar to “make a difference” she told her mum it wouldn’t be for long. “I’ll just stay for six months and get it out of my system,” she said. That was nearly ten years ago and, as you’ve probably guessed, it didn’t work out like that. Caroline has now adopted two children and looks after more than 100 more in the poverty-stricken country’s capital. Her mum, Sally, explained: “Caroline fell in love with Madagascar. After she returned to work at St Michael’s Hospital in Bristol, she heard how Malagasy babies were being thrown into skips and left to die because all the orphanages were full, and she felt she had to do something.” Following training with an organisation called Iris Ministries in Mozambique, Caroline rented a house in Madagascar, registered as a NGO (non governmental organisation) and began taking in street children in 2008. “After that it snowballed.s. “They now have three houses and look after 107 children, aged from birth to 20. The oldest boy,

Caroline with her adopted children Esther and Andry Radu, has come back as a member of staff,” said Sally. The orphanage has nine Western staff, including a nurse and a doctor, and about 50 Malagasy staff who work as house parents, cooks, cleaners and social workers. Caroline and her team take in

children who are abandoned for various reasons; their parents may have died or might just not be able to afford to feed them. “Sometimes children are left in the market place with a bag of clothes.“The police bring abandoned children to the houses too and

often it has to go through the courts,” said Sally. It was when at the court house one day to deal with papers for a baby that Caroline met Andry. “She was told, ‘Do you want him He’s nothing but trouble and no one ever wanted him.’,” said Sally. “The

It costs £1 a day to feed each child at the centre and many people have undertaken to sponsor children. Rent and salaries also have to be paid for. “We very much appreciate regular support as well as one-off donations,” said Sally. La Porta Barbering Company

WASTE collection and street cleansing in Bristol is to be provided by a new council-owned company after Bristol City Council and contractor Kier (formerly May Gurney) mutually agreed to end their current contract. Over the next month there will be a handover period as employees, vehicles, equipment and facilities move across to the new council-owned company known as Bristol Waste Company (BWC). It is anticipated that the new service will start on August 1, 2015. The move, which is subject to a settlement agreement between the council and Kier, was approved at a cabinet meeting in June. The council says that while some short-term teething problems are likely, residents should expect very little difference in their household bin collections. The new system will be operated for a year whilst the council looks in full detail at the best long-term service model. A SCHEME providing residents with a safe place to go in the event of an evacuation following an emergency, such as severe flooding or a gas leak, has been launched in Bristol. Mayor George Ferguson was joined by representatives from Bristol City Council’s civil protection team, Avon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service and Avon and Somerset Police at the Community Places of Safety launch at Easton Community Centre. The scheme will provide a network of safe places across Bristol, with 66 venues having already registered. Each of the venues will have: • 24-hour access • Disabled access • Toilets • Heating In the event of an emergency, the scheme will be activated once a phone call has been made to the council’s 24-hour emergency control room. Bristol City Council staff will support evacuees as soon as possible. The Community Places of Safety will operate for no longer than four hours. If residents are unable to return to their homes within this time they will be found alternative accommodation by the council.

Sally wins carer of the year award A CARE worker from Fishponds who looks after people in their own homes to help them lead independent lives has been recognised for her sterling work in the community. Sally Stamp was presented with a gong at the Care and Support West (CSW) Awards. The glittering event, held at Bath Racecourse on June 6, was hosted by former Watchdog presenter and bowel cancer survivor Lynn FauldsWood. A total of 170 representatives of the local care industry, regulatory body (CQC) and local councils attended the gala dinner for the annual presentation. Now in their third year, the Care and Support West awards celebrate the unsung heroes of the care industry. They give care providers and their staff in the former Avon area an opportunity to honour and congratulate people who have gone the extra mile to provide excellent care to their charges. Sally, who works for Staple Hill-based Elite Home Care, won the Best Domiciliary Care Font Line Worker after being nominated by a service user. Elite Home Care managing

director Anne Owen said: “Sally was nominated by a service user who said in her nomination ‘She takes time to chat, nothing is too much bother. If she could be cloned I would buy one. She is clearly at ease in her role and makes people laugh. Would I send Sally in to look after

my mum - no hesitation, yes!’ “We always knew Sally is an excellent carer but receiving an award in recognition of her excellent care was well deserved. “Sally didn’t want to keep her award at home as she said our other carers who do an excellent

job also deserve an award but she is Elite Home Care’s representative and we are all very proud of her.” This wasn’t the only success for Elite Home Care - a team of their care workers also made it to the final. Chantel Stack, Chris O’Donohoue, Georgina Hall, Maria Farmiloe and Tiff McCree were nominated by a service user’s mother who said without the care workers her daughter would be unable to go out into the community. Lynn Faulds-Wood said: “When I was on BBC Watchdog, we heard complaints about poor care, not good news stories about the wonderful people who support and care for the most vulnerable in our society. “This was a great event, celebrating the warm, inspiring managers and staff we are lucky to have in our lives. An uplifting evening recognising the work of great people.” Elite Home Care, which is based in Fountain Square, was set up by Downend resident Anne Owen in September 2010. Carers look after people in their own homes providing personal care and access to the community.

Vaccinating Your New Kitten or Puppy

V

ACCINATION is an important part of being a responsible owner. As well as protecting your pet from life-threatening illnesses, it also helps maintain the health of the general pet population. Pets will need to be fully vaccinated before going into catteries or kennels. Dogs and cats are vaccinated for a variety of potentially fatal diseases and will require an initial course of 2-3 injections initially followed by yearly boosters. But do you know what diseases we vaccinate for? Dogs are vaccinated against a collection of serious diseases. Parvovirus is a highly contagious disease which causes severe vomiting and diarrhoea with a poor survival rate; rapid veterinary attention improves the chances of recovery. Leptospirosis is a bacterial infection which affects liver and kidneys. It is often contracted by swimming in water contaminated with rat urine, and can pass to humans. Following reports of leptospirosis in the local area we now use a vaccine which covers more strains. Distemper or ‘hard-pad’ causes thickening of the pads. Other signs include vomiting and diarrhoea, along with a cough, runny nose and in severe cases, seizures . Thankfully this is a rare condition now, but it is very serious. Canine infectious hepatitis causes acute liver failure, pneumonia and clotting problems,

and sometimes seizures. Kennel Cough is a complex disease and is covered by an optional extra vaccination which is squirted up the nose (no needles!). It is caused by one of several bacteria or viruses causing a honking cough, often sounding like the dog has something stuck in their throat. It is a highly infectious disease and can make some animals very unwell, they will often need antibiotics to help them improve. Cats have their own set of disease which we vaccinate against. Feline leukaemia virus is usually spread via saliva, at mating, or from the kitten’s mother. It causes tumours, anaemia and weakens the immune system. Unfortunately there is no cure, so we have to focus on prevention, providing the best quality of life for infected cats and preventing further spread. Feline herpes virus and feline calici virus cause cat flu, so signs are usually upper respiratory disease such as nasal discharge, coughing and sneezing, and also painful gums. Feline panleucopenia virus, the cat version of the canine parvovirus, is highly contagious, affecting the intestinal cells and also the immune system, with a high fatality rate. If you have any questions about vaccinations, please feel free to call the team at Kingswood Vets4Pets on 0117 961 6417.

A FISHPONDS man who left another man permanently disabled after attacking him with a machete has been jailed for 14 years. Nelo Smith, 24, of Marshfield Road, was sentenced at Bristol Crown Court in June after being convicted of GBH. Smith attacked a 36-year-old man with a machete in Marshfield Road on Saturday December 5 during a dispute over a drug deal. The victim lost part of one hand and suffered severe trauma to his other hand and leg during the incident, spending 16 hours in emergency surgery as a result. Det Sgt Mark Newbury said: “Smith inflicted severe injuries on the victim, who lost more than three pints of blood before being operated on. “It was an horrific attack which has left the victim permanently disabled. “I hope this significant sentence sends out a strong message that crimes involving violence are treated very seriously by the police and the courts.”

School praised for swift action to bring about improvements CHESTER Park Infant School has been commended by a Government inspector for its swift and effective response to a disappointing Ofsted report. The school was judged in March to “require improvement” and Her Majesty’s Inspector Lorna Brackstone, who visited in early June, said the measures taken were already having an impact. In a letter to head teacher Susan Tyte, she said: “The inspection judgement of ‘requires improvement’ came as a huge shock to you, your senior team, governors, parents and the local authority. However, in true ‘Chester Park Infant’ style, the school community, supported by other schools and

local authority officials, have wasted no time in planning improvements and putting them quickly into place.” Ms Brackstone noted that timetable changes had been made so that children could practise key literacy and numeracy skills in depth. She said the school’s rich curriculum provided many challenging learning opportunities for pupils of all abilities. Teachers had increased the number of ways they check on how well each child is doing and were very focused on improving their practice and governors’ teamwork with senior leaders had been reinforced, the letter acknowledged.

AST week, Grounded Fishponds welcomed eleven kids from the local area for a pizza making party. The kids enjoyed an afternoon of being Grounded pizza chefs, choosing exactly what they wanted to put on their pizza. There were numerous toppings to choose from, including salami, rocket, spinach, peas and several types of cheese. The freshly-made pizza dough was enthusiastically piled high with homemade tomato sauce, followed by everything from carrots to chorizo. The kids were encouraged

Fishponds Pizza Party . . . to create an attractive design for their pizza, with a good balance of colours and flavours. Many kids tried toppings they’ve never had before, with spinach being the surprise favourite, and olives coming in a close second. Whilst the pizzas went into the kitchen to be stone-baked, the kids got the chance to take advantage of the good weather and play on the climbing frame in the Grounded garden. Mum of one of the children Hazel Takle said she was amazed at the huge choice the children had to choose from, “I was expecting a small choice of ingredients for them to make their pizzas but the choice was amazing with the children entering into the fun of the process also by selecting different foods just because they looked good. “It was great and when it was time to put the pizzas in the oven the kids took themselves out to

the play area to carry on the party. to be honest some of the mums even suggested the possibilty of a girls pizza making night out with a few wines . . . watch this space”. It’s safe to say that the default ham and cheese pizza is a thing of the past - these kids are far more likely to ask for olives and spinach on their pizzas from now on! n Our pizza making parties give kids a chance to be a Grounded pizza chef for the day, topping freshly made pizza dough with homemade tomato sauce and a wide variety of toppings, from carrots to chorizo. We encourage them to try toppings they’ve never had before, or wouldn’t think to put

on a pizza, and to get a balance of colours and flavours - many enthusiastically pile on fresh spinach and olives, to the delight of their parents!

Everybody needs good neighbours

DO you know the name of the person living next door? What about the young couple living opposite? Or the elderly lady four doors up? It’s a sign of the times that we aren’t as friendly with our neighbours as previous generations used to be. We’re out to work early, home late and heaven forbid we let our children loose in the streets in case they get hit by the constant stream of traffic thundering by. We just don’t get the chance to spend time with the people who are, metaphorically, closest to us. However, two schemes in the district plan to change all that. They are encouraging children and adults who live near each other to make the effort to mix and communicate. People taking part say their lives are far richer for it. The first is aimed at children and as a consequence, parents too - in Hillfields and has just celebrated its first anniversary. Once a month Maple Avenue is closed to traffic and youngsters are encouraged to play in the street.

Known as Playing Out, the idea is sweeping many areas across the city.

The idea was hatched by two Bristol mums over a cup of tea. The rest, as

they say, is history. It’s not quite as straightforward

as it sounds as an application has to made to Bristol City Council to close a road. But with a little planning and perseverance, it really isn’t that difficult. Maple Avenue resident Lucy Touray, whose daughter is pictured, explains: “We have a very diverse community on the street and are lucky enough to have a very wide road for children to enjoy. “After a small consultation and no protest, the street was granted permission from the council to close once a month for a one hour period. You can apply for several hours and several days of the week but it was felt this was a big enough commitment for residents who had never undertaken a street closure before.” Lucy is also a trustee of Hillfields Community Trust, an organisation set up in 2011 by people keen to rekindle community spirit. The first Playing Out session in Maple Avenue took place last June and was a huge success. Lucy said: “Just on our street alone the children attend nine different schools/pre schools. Street play allows them to meet up and socialise. The atmosphere is great with many children sharing their scooters, chalking the roads and building good relationships with their neighbours. “It’s the perfect opportunity to

fishpondsvoice

get children away from technology for an hour and get to know the kids in their area. “Children from neighbouring streets are invited too as long as they are accompanied by an adult which has resulted in more grown up support to keep children safe. It’s also a great opportunity for other children to engage whose street may not be able to close for several reasons, such as being on a bus route. “Parents also have a great opportunity to meet each other and build a closer community. It’s great to see people passing and stopping to chat. The kids love it and we recommend it!” Another scheme running nearby is Age Friendly Streets, a campaign in Fishponds, Easville and Stapleton to encourage small acts of neighbourliness between residents of all ages. Run by charitable group Streets Alive and supported by the Greater Fishponds Area Neighbourhood Partnership, its aim is to reduce isolation and find new ways for older and younger people to support one another. Streets Alive can help residents organise events like ‘street meets’ and believes that small acts of neighbourliness hold the key to age friendlier streets. Gaby Solly, the Neighbours’

follow us on Twitter @fishpondsvoice

Supporter for Age Friendly Streets, said: “More and more we’re online, rather than talking face to face. Our streets are increasingly mixed, and families live further apart. I think these new pressures mean that making real neighbourly connections is more important than ever. Age Friendly Streets can help us to make these connections and to be happy where we live.” One 81-year-old resident said: “This campaign is what we need. It’s a positive reminder to think about it. I make an effort with lots of younger people, taking in parcels

A COUPLE have raised thousands of pounds to thank the “unbelievably amazing” hospice nurses who cared for their 17-month-old baby. Kimberley Richmond, 36, and Andy Clipson, 44, from Fishponds, were devastated after their son Lincoln lost his fight for life after suffering a brain injury at birth. He was diagnosed with severe disabilities and given a limited life expectancy. Sadly, Lincoln died last August at just 17-months-old. Since then the couple have raised nearly £3,000 for Children’s Hospice South West to help ensure other children and parents are able to get the same level of care and understanding. Kimberley said: “Lincoln was in and out of hospital every few weeks with recurrent problems. “He didn’t leave NICU until fivemonths-old and he had his first day at home at six-months-old. I was still

Grateful parents support hospice in memory of son on maternity leave but my partner had to constantly take sick leave or unpaid leave. “When Lincoln was so poorly that no amount of oxygen was keeping him at an acceptable level, we sadly came to the decision he was him dying. We transferred him from the children’s hospital to Charlton Farm (Children’s Hospice South West) and he passed away in my arms two days later. “The support we received from the nurses at Charlton Farm was so unbelievably amazing. They helped us choose the funeral directors, the readings and the minister. They even suggested a balloon release in his honour as his funeral happened to be on the day of the balloon fiesta. “It was so lovely and peaceful on a sunny day watching all the balloons with personal messages be released in to the sky.” The couple, who have another son Evan who is 13-months-old, have been raising money since Lincoln died as a thank you to staff, and also, as a tribute to their son. They set up a Just Giving page where people can make online donations and they then spread the word about the page via social

This figure has been boosted to just under £3,000 after the couple and a team of friends from Fishponds and Downend raised £670 when they took part in the Rainbow Run at the Downs on June 15. The 5k fundraiser for Children’s Hospice South West is a colourful affair where participants run

through paint stations where they get showered in different colour paints. Kimberley said: “It was really good fun. Getting splattered in paint is huge fun because it’s so exciting. “Some of had never run before but we were running for the first time doing a 5k! was overwhelming. “We’ve been so impressed with everyone’s involvement that we’re thinking of what to do next. We’ve seen how much we’ve raised for the hospice and we’ll probably keep the fundraising going.” Kimberley, who gets married to Andy next month, said: “We can’t praise the hospice enough and that’s why we’ve been raising money for them in Lincoln’s honour since the day he died. “Lincoln was such a gorgeous little boy with beautiful blonde hair and blue eyes. ARSONISTS have been blamed for a fire which set light to back gardens in Fishponds. The attack affected two homes in Lower Station Road when a garden shed was set on fire. A bicycle was taken during the incident, which happened around 11.40pm on Saturday June 6. Spokesperson for Avon Fire & Rescue Service, Stephanie Mounsey, said: “On arrival firefighters found a shed on fire which was affecting the back of two properties. Two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used a high pressure hose reel to put the fire out. They then ventilated the area. “It’s thought the fire was started deliberately. Arson can be extremely dangerous as fire can spread very quickly, destroying property and endangering lives. “When AF&RS is called to a deliberately set fire, it ties up our fire engines which could be needed to attend an emergency elsewhere." A police spokesperson said officers were investigating the attack and urged anyone with information to call 101 and quote

reference 59675/15. One of the victims said he believed the perpetrators gained access via the car park at Robinson

House. "I have nothing but praise for the fire service. I was lucky not much damage was caused," he said.

CAMPAIGNERS have stepped up their opposition to plans to build 12 homes in the Frome Valley at Stapleton. They say development would ruin a much-loved open space in one of Bristol’s most beautiful and cherished landscapes and could pave the way for similar housing estates on other parks and green areas of the city. The protesters have been gathering support since they heard about the proposals for the houses on a small part of the grounds at Colston’s School in February. Builders Woodstock Homes submitted a formal planning application for ten luxury homes and two affordable homes off Welsford Avenue to Bristol City Council at the end of May and a decision is expected by the end of August. The Protect Frome Valley group said in a statement: “This kind of insidious, piecemeal development threatens all green open space in Bristol. Planning permission, if granted, would send out a signal that all green open space in Bristol is potentially available for development.” The campaigners point out that the land, owned by the Society of Merchant Venturers, is designated as “important open space”, part of a “historic park” and a recognised “wildlife corridor” and sits within the Stapleton and Frome Valley

Huge campaign over homes bid

Conservation Area. Yet despite these multiple protections, it is “extremely vulnerable to what we regard as a speculative and wholly inappropriate development proposal”, they add. The protesters say they recognise and accept that Bristol needs more homes but believe this should not be at the expense of precious and finite resources. They have launched a petition highlighting a report from the Council for the Protection of Rural England based on research by UWE Bristol which says Bristol has the capacity to build more than 30,000 new homes on brownfield or previously developed land. At the time Fishponds Voice went to print, they had gathered more than 500 signatures. They are also urging people to comment on the application 15/01870/F in writing or on the council planning website. More than 150 have already done so, both supporters and objectors. About 50 people attended the group’s third public meeting at Glenfrome Primary School on June 22, where community association chairman Colwyn Jones and resident Christopher Faulkner Gibson outlined the campaign to date.

Kirsty Hassan, spokeswoman for the independent Colston’s School, said the Woodstock Homes team was liaising with council officers as part of the normal planning process. In a statement to the Voice she said: “If officers require the team to refine or amend the proposals, it is happy to do so. It is also happy to undertake any necessary further assessments, if the council requires it The team has reviewed issues raised by the community and has already made some changes to the application. It remains open to suggested further changes and is happy to discuss specific concerns with local residents. “While both the school and

Woodstock Homes understand there are local concerns, they believe the site is a good place to build homes. It is private land, unused by the school. “There is a housing crisis in Bristol. Homes are needed not just on the outer edge of the city, or through city centre apartment schemes, but they are needed in every suburb, including Stapleton. “Any money raised by the sale of the land would be fully reinvested in the school, including in the sports facilities which are also used by many community clubs.” See our letters: Pages 22-23.

Plans to breathe new life into Fishponds landmark building

PLANS to breathe new life into a derelict Fishponds landmark are steaming ahead despite unexpected problems because the building has lain empty for so long. For the past two years Fishponds Church of England Academy has been in negotiations to buy the old Fishponds Library from its owners, Bristol City Council. Talks were successfully wrapped up at the end of last year when the school took ownership of the historic building. However, when workmen recently moved in they discovered more work than previously thought will have to be carried out before it is in a fit state to use. Academy business manager Helen Godfrey said: “We have a lot more more work to do than we anticipated but nevertheless it will AW.pdf be a 1 fantastic 10/06/2015 14:36 space once it’s done. “The downpipes on the road

side were broken so it meant everything that was going down them was just bleeding into the walls and causing damp. The plaster inside has all had to be knocked off. “I would hope it would be water-tight by September and hope the academy would be in there using it by around February/March next year. “We would have liked to have done this two years ago and then it wouldn’t have been in such disrepair but we’re cracking on and are pleased with the progress being made.” The library closed in December 2011 when facilities moved to Robinson House, a council customer service point in nearby Hockey’s Lane. The academy says once work is finished it will be used for various school activities and will also be hired out for community use. Ms Godfrey said the building

won’t look much different although it could take on a different colour to the existing salmon shade it is currently painted. “We’re just making good,” she said. “We will sort out the rendering, downpipes, windows and electrics so it will be up-to-date. It will probably be painted it in our school colour which is a very pale blue.” Ms Godfrey said there are numerous ideas for the space including a breakfast club, afterschool club and base for ESOL (English as a Second Language) classes. “There will also be the opportunity to let it out,” she said. “We’re putting a concertina door half way down so even if we are using it, the top end will be a separate entity so we can let it out. We’re going to have to because we have to make it pay. “I have a list of people who are interested. It will be more a case of letting it rather than renting it because the academy needs to have first dibs on it. We can’t have someone in there all day every day so we can’t use it as that’s not what we wanted. “We are looking to let it to groups to use like, for example, a sewing group.” Ms Godfrey said there will also be the opportunity to let the space out on evenings and during

fishpondsvoice

weekends, possibly for music or parties. “However we are very much in the early stages so we probably won’t be in a position to let it out until this time next year,” she said. Ms Godfrey said, once complete, the building would be a brilliant resource for the academy. “It will be a fantastic space. We may well have a sensory room there and are thinking of putting a large kitchen in so the children can go there for cookery lessons. They could also use the space for music. We have lots of ideas but as it’s early days we don’t know exactly what we will use it for. “It’s on our footprint so we can go in off the playground without pupils going on to the road so it’s fantastic for us.” The building used to be Fishponds Picture House, a cinema which opened in 1911 and closed in the 1920s. According to local historian Paul Townsend, the cinema’s owner Sid Macaire sold the building in 1926 after he heard that a more modern cinema, the Vandyck, was being built nearby. Knowing he wouldn’t be able to compete, Mr Macaire sold it to the council for £2,500 before the Vandyck even opened. The council then turned the building into a library, opening to the public in December 1927.

Sunshine draws the crowds to 999 Fun Day

SUNSHINE helped draw the crowds at the annual Hillfields ward 999 Fun Day. The event, at Barton Fields, Duncombe Lane, Speedwell, was held in partnership with the local neighbourhood police team, Barton Fields Trust and Creative Youth Network. The crowds enjoyed BMX stunt rider Matti Hemming’s performance, a taekwondo display, and a fun dog show. Adding to the entertainment were fairground rides, face painting and a dramatic tug of war at the end. The event, which is now in its ninth year, was attended by police crime commissioner Sue Mountstevens and one of Bristol’s youth mayors. PC Jamie Shiels said: “It went brilliantly. There were no issues or problems and everyone had a really good time.”

a lower gear ratio. In a lower gear, over a mile for ease of reference, the engine turns faster than the higher gear. In my car, approx. 300rpm difference. That means if I were to drive for an hour at 20mph in a lower gear, my engine would be worked unnecessarily harder to the tune of 18,000 revolutions. All these extra revolutions need extra fuel to maintain them It would be the equivalent of allowing the engine to run at idling speed for 18 minutes whilst parked. I don’t know how much fuel would be wasted from our dwindling oil supplies but if all the motorists in Bristol were to leave their engines running for no apparent reason it would amount to a considerable quantity. Imagine the national outcry! All the ramifications should be taken into account and I have listed those I can think of below. 1) Wasteful depletion of natural resources, namely oil. 2) Extra fuel cost to motorists. 3) Extra maintenance cost to motorists. 4) How much did it cost to buy & erect all those 20mph signs no.one takes any notice of? That is our Council Tax money!!! 5) The extra health problems caused by the extra engine use outlined earlier. I bet you thought I’d missed

20mph causes extra fuel use I AGREE wholeheartedly with Reginald King’s comments about the 20mph limit but perhaps he should have explained a little more. Most modern vehicles are designed to pootle (is that word in the Oxford dictionary?) along at between 25 - 30mph in top gear with the engine more or less at idling speed. Certainly at idling speed (1000rpm) my car cruises at around 25 - 26mph. In order to comply with these proliferating 20mph zones I either have to go to a lower gear ratio or potentially risk my car suffering mechanical damage in top gear, not to mention excessive brake wear. Very well, you say, then go to

I AM extremely disturbed by Colston’s School’s plan to build 12 houses on the land to the south of Welsford Avenue. The site has already been extensively damaged; the Badger sett roof has extremely deep tyre grooves from the flailing machine causing damage that contravenes the Protection of Badgers Act 1992. More disturbingly what message does this destruction of a rich, green area of Conservation Land give to the pupils of the school? Do they think it is okay for the school they attend to build expensive houses, for profit, rather than look after green spaces that are increasingly under threat? Do they consider it justifiable to allow the desecration of wildlife habitats that contribute to the decline in many native species of animals and plants? I would like to call upon all

Threat to wildlife from homes plan I AM sure all readers are in agreement that The Frome Valley is a beautiful, unique and important open space, teaming with wildlife and accessible for every one to enjoy. The plans for this proposed development , will clearly have a huge visual impact, as it is on a highly visible elevated position and there will be an increase in light and noise pollution. The River Frome and the surrounding area is recognised as a site of Nature Conservation Interest and any development will be detrimental to the homes of badgers, otters, kingfishers and bats, all protected species. Our concerns are that if this development is allowed to go ahead,

it opens the flood gates to further green open space development . It is driven by short term commercial gain for Colston’s School and the developers, and will make little difference to alleviate the housing shortage and need for affordable homes.. I urge all readers to write objections to this outrageous proposal - go to www.protect. fromevalley.org, where there are clear links about how to easily make an objection, as well as an online petition to sign ‘Prioritise brownfield sites for development: protect precious green open space’ The website is full of latest information, as well as pictures of this ‘unsightly corner’ (quote from the developers) The clock is ticking, Jo Holburn

Beautiful views being put at risk RE Proposal to build 12 luxury homes within Frome Valleys protected Wildlife Corridor: I am very fortunate to live in Stapleton near this wonderful open space and appreciate its beauty and the sense of well being it gives me and my family. The views across the field with its oak trees and abundant wildlife is never taken for granted. The field is used by people from miles around who enjoy the stunning views and tranquility that the area brings. However, since the planning application was submitted, and after over 30 years we are now denied access by the school. The field looks out over the historic Eastville Park with stunning views along the River Frome. The view from the park, looking back onto the field, is equally as impressive and gives a real feeling of openness, space and continuity as the ancient oak tree in the field mirrors the oak tree on the far side of Eastville Park. The field is very rich with protected wildlife and habitats including an established and protected Badger sett. However this has all but been destroyed when the developers decimated and flatten the area in preparation for submitting this barbaric planning application. It was with utter horror and disbelief that I heard of the proposal to build 12 luxury houses on this finite and non renewable landscape, which Colston School described as ‘vacant scrubland’ and ‘surplus redundant asset’. This development would not only encroach on this recognised Important Open Space but it also plans to fell the majestic oak trees and decimate the numerous protected species of wildlife that reside here. The proposed intrusive elevated housing development would be highly visible both from the Frome Valley walkway and from the Eastville Park Lake. The infilling of the beautiful open space will give the impression of an ever encroaching housing estate rather than the sense of openness

we currently enjoy. There are already plans in place to build at least 674 house within a 2 mile radius of this proposed site so why, apart from greed, unless the school is in financial difficulties, does Colston’s School need to build an additional 12 luxury houses on this beautiful protected wildlife corridor? While I appreciate the need to build new houses I feel priority should be given to development on brownfield sites and, according to a study undertake by Architectural Students at UWE, there is enough brown field land in Bristol to build 300,000 new houses. At the ‘consultation event’, which was frankly a farce, none of the developers or headmaster knew that the site flooded. The field is a functional floodplain which helps prevent flooding further along the River Frome. They were dismissive and totally unprepared. In fact they were unable to answer most of our the questions especially about the precious ecological habitat that this field enjoys. They do however claim, in their proposal that ‘no protected or priority species, designated site or biodiversity feature will be affected by this development’. I’m not sure if this shows that they do not recognise the impact of the development on this protected area or that they just don’t care. I note that the School and land is owned by the Merchant Ventures. The Master of the Merchant Venturers Chris Curling was recently quoted as saying ‘ we are motivated by a desire to enhance the quality of life for local people particularly the young, older people, and the disadvantaged. If this is truly the case please reconsider this outrageous proposal and ensure future generations are able to enjoy the wonderful open spaces that truly makes Bristol Europe’s Green Capital. Mr and Mrs McIntyre

‘Urban creep’ must be halted I AM greatly alarmed at the potential damage this development would do to the setting of Eastville Park and the Frome Valley. The proposed housing would intrude almost right down to the lake, and being on an open hillside would be very visible from numerous vantage points, not least from the open ground below Everest Road and the surrounding area. I am also deeply concerned at the impact on wildlife. At present, the habitat affords secure nesting and a rich source of food for a huge range of species. A few days ago, I was out in the field with Ian Llewellyn, the wildlife cameraman whose piece on the Frome was shown on Springwatch recently. Ian described the proposed development site as ‘feeding everything that lives around here’. Its importance in supporting an extensive food chain cannot be

overstated. We also found evidence close by of otter and kingfisher activity: both of these species are highly protected and likely to be significantly disturbed by this development. We know that Bristol needs more homes, but building luxury houses on this site at the expense of a public amenity and loss of habitat will do nothing to alleviate it, and indeed this is not what is driving it – rather, it is the desire for profit. What a poor example for Colston’s School to set for their pupils. They claim that the land is surplus and that there is no potential educational use to which it could be put. What about their own nature reserve? That would support classroom learning across a very wide range of science subjects and also foster a respect and sympathy for the natural environment that the school itself currently appears to lack. Furthermore, we support the CPRE’s campaign for prioritising brownfield sites – using research conducted by UWE they calculate that up to 30,000 homes could be built in the Bristol area on brownfield and previously developed land. There is simply no need to destroy much loved green open space for housing. The land has been assessed by Bristol City Council’s Planning Department and given a number of official designations, including being: • wholly in a Conservation Area • ‘Important Open Space’ • Part of an ‘Historic Park’ • A recognised ‘Wildlife Corridor’ If this level of planning protection can be set easily aside for private gain and public loss, then no green open space in Bristol will be safe. The Council tried to sell of some similar land itself a few years ago and this was met with a public outcry. We must defend what makes our City such a wonderful place in which to live, oppose damaging urban creep and make sure that instead of luxury houses in the wrong place, we build affordable houses in the right place. Anyone wishing to support our campaign can visit our website at www.protect.fromevalley.org. Thank you. Kind regards Chris Faulkner Gibson

Development site prone to flooding WITH regard to Colston’s school’s planning application to build 12 luxury houses on the playing field adjacent to the River Frome and Eastville Park. This venture, as with other more infamous ventures in Bristol’s past , is based on profiteering alone while seeking to present itself as an ‘improvement’ to the social status of the locality and , through it’s ‘sense of civic duty’, by materially ‘helping’ Bristol City Council’s plight in meeting Bristol’s housing needs. Bristol does indeed have a

Email: sales@fishpondsvoice.co.uk

housing problem and our Council has indeed been forced , due to underfunding by successive governments, to look closely at how they may meet the demands of our burgeoning population. A number of green spaces have sadly been sold off for development which might not have been done if not for desperate lack of funds. However, through a recent land usage study by a group of architectural students, it has come to light that there are a significant number of brownfield sites in East Bristol that would be far more suitable for housing than would a green field that sits not only in an area prone to regular flooding (the opposite of what is erroneously claimed in the planning application to be an area that hasn’t flooded since 1974) but is a conservation area immediately adjacent to ‘one of the finest parks in the country’. The site in question is situated at the beginning of Bristol’s green lung, benefiting not only the many thousands of local residents but those of the entire City and beyond. It is also the start of the Frome Valley Walkway, providing both exercise and pleasure whilst maintaining and improving mental and physical health. It is not just the pathway itself that is important but the views on all sides. To reduce or even obliterate these views by allowing the development of luxury housing , would be detrimental to the well being and enjoyment of all that use the park and the Frome Valley Walkway. David Sandilands

Don’t remove our green space MANY of your readers will have learned of the plan to build 12 houses on Colston’s Lower playing field. An area which lies alongside the section of the Frome Valley which is in Eastville Park. Along with many others, I am writing a formal objection to this plan based around the approved policies of Bristol City Council. In simple terms, I shall be asking BCC to ‘stick to your word’ and my objection will be written in cool, factual, unemotional prose in the hope that cold logic will carry the day. However, in writing to FishpondsVoice I can express what I really feel which is a howl of rage and deep, deep sorrow that yet another attempt is being made to remove part of our precious green heritage. We desperately need to retain every piece of green land that we can. Pollution of noise and light and destruction of wildlife habitat brings ever nearer, the day when humans will destroy this once wonderful planet. I would ask your readers to join me in objecting to this plan. Sally A. Collins

with Lee of Kingfisher Cafe

Cheap and easy to make and very tasty. For this leek version you need: 8oz leeks – finely chopped 4oz of grated potato 6 large eggs 2 tbps of milk 4oz Emmental cheese Salt and pepper to season. Sweat the leeks in a large pan until just tender. Transfer to a bowl and add the grated potato – mix in the eggs one at a time but do not beat. Add the milk and cheese and season. Heat a mixture of butter and oil in a frying pan until butter has melted – swirl to coat edges of pan and add the Eggah mixture. Reduce to the lowest heat and cover the pan with a lid. Cook for 10 – 15 mins and then check the edges with a spatula to ensure it is not sticking. Cover with lid and continue to cook on lowest heat for further 15-20 mins until the mixture has set. You can finish setting the top under the grill if you wish. Eggah can be eaten hot or cold with anything that takes your fancy!

YOUNG carers now have their own zone within the Carers Support Centre at the Vassall Centre in Fishponds. It has been created following a year of hard work raising £25,000 for refurbishment. Young carers service manager Jo Holburn the group was very grateful to their generous landlord and to a number of sponsors for their support. The young people themselves have played a big part in transforming the zone. They made colourful tiles at a glassmaking workshop and produced some graffiti-style decorations with the help of a community artist. It means they now have a

Young carers THERE are 16,118 unpaid carers aged 5 to 17 years old in the South West (2011 census). They miss lessons at school and struggle to keep up with school work. They miss out on time to play, see friends and leisure activities. They are isolated and lonely; and they are vulnerable to bullying. These children also often suffer problems with their own physical and mental health: with injuries from heavy lifting, lack of sleep and poor nutrition; and they often struggle with anxiety, lack of confidence and low self esteem.

Young adult carers THERE are 3916 young adult carers (aged under 25) in Bristol & South Glos (2011 census). Their role can affect their own health: 44 per cent report a mental health problem – twice the national average. Many struggle to juggle their education, working life and caring role, causing pressure and stress. A high proportion drop out of college or university. It can be hard to have relationships or socialise, which can make young adult carers feel quite alone and isolated.

T was a real pleasure to be invited along to Bristol Metropolitan Academy to join pupils for just one of the many “Big Picnics” happening in Bristol during Big Green Week. The Big Picnic is part of the Soil Association’s Food for Life programme, which teaches children about nutrition and where their food comes from, by taking them to visit farms, getting them growing plants, herbs and vegetables, and teaching them cooking skills. I think it’s a brilliant idea, and I’m glad to see that 69 Bristol schools have signed up so far. Bristol Met only signed up this year, but has already revamped its dining room to make it healther by introducing a salad bar and having fruit on every counter. They have an established herb garden and have planted a vegetable patch, as well as growing strawberries. They hope to attain their Food for Life Bronze Award soon. I arrived at the school just as a ‘walking bus’ of pupils from Begbrook Primary turned up, carrying plants they had grown for the plant swap later that day. In total, 120 pupils from local schools took part in the picnic. They got to prepare a “collaborative coleslaw”

with local chef, Shane Jordan, chopping onions, grating carrots and cabbage, and mixing it all up with mayonnaise, and also to take part in a quiz identifying various plants and herbs. A project called “What Happens Next” took the children through the whole food cycle, getting them to plant basil seeds in soil packed into recycled egg boxes; to pick and chop basil they’d grown earlier; to help cook a pasta dish with tomato and basil sauce; and then to put their cardboard bowls into the wormery and – to their delight watch the worms wriggling around while it was explained to them how composting works. Food for Life runs alongside the Healthy Schools initiative, and partners with Bristol Green Capital, taking its sustainable, healthy eating message into schools. But funding for the 12 month pilot has now come to an end, and they are still waiting to hear if it will be recommissioned. In an age of growing childhood obesity and doctors reporting a rise in a malnutrition, I think it is so important that we educate children about food and help them make healthy lifestyle choices. I would urge the Mayor to commit to supporting it now.

Now to the hard work! • You can plant things all year round if they are in a pot but remember to keep them well watered until they are established. • Your garden is what interests you. • You don’t even have to have flowers! This reminds me of a book I was hooked on when I was a child, The Little Forest. In this book a little girl - we’ll call her Lucy - was lucky enough to have a wildlife patch with a pond and even a frog. But above all there were tiny trees too. I was so fascinated with this story that my Mum found me an unused patch in the garden to have my Very Own Little Forest. True, it was near the compost heap but what I didn’t know then there were slow-worms on top of the

compost, basking in the heat under some material my Dad had put there to trap the heat in. We had a 1/3 acre garden and together my Mum and I went around finding numerous seedlings such as an oak tree and a sycamore. I even grew a morello cherry which when matured produced cherries. I had left home by this time but I was able to eat the fruit when I came

home each weekend. But the most fascinating thing was the sign my Dad made - To The Little Forest which pointed down a grassy path. Over time if my parents had not dug up the trees and transplanted them to some waste land the other side of their hedge it would have indeed become a True Forest! Dwarf conifers If you would like a little forest remember in time the little trees will obtain their maximum height. Another suggestion is to buy dwarf conifers but even then after 10 years they will out live their dwarfness and grow to a normal height, unless you keep them in a pot where their roots will restrict growth. More on these and how they can be incorporated into a rock garden next month. Christine Broadway

A SOUNDWELL man has been fined £500 after admitting fly tipping waste at a service station in Emersons Green, and a Longwell Green man has been ordered to carry out unpaid work and pay £210 in costs after he admitted fly tipping waste in Wick. James Meade, 36, of Portland Street, Soundwell, Bristol, appeared before Northavon Magistrates’ Court on Friday June 5. He pleaded guilty to knowingly causing waste to be dumped at Black Horse Service Station in Westerleigh Road and was fined £500 with £500 costs. He was also ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £50. John Webber, 31, of Pearsall Way, Longwell Green, appeared before Northavon Magistrates’ Court on the same day. He pleaded guilty to fly tipping at Oldbury Lane in Wick and was ordered to carry out 100 hours of unpaid work and pay the council’s clear up costs of £110, along with another £100 towards prosecution costs. South Gloucestershire Council’s Communities Committee chair Cllr Heather Goddard said: “These cases serve as a reminder that if you are involved in the illegal dumping of waste in South Glos, you will be prosecuted.”

St Matthias Barratt estate work gets under way at last

Learning to cope with diabetes A DIABETES support group will host a special guest at their next open meeting in Fishponds. Bristol East Diabetes UK Group was set up more than two years ago to support people living with the condition. Richard Lane OBE, who is the president of Diabetes UK, will give a talk about his own journey with diabetes and will let guests know about the work that the charity is carrying out to support people. Richard has had Type 1 diabetes since since 1976. Between September 2004 and January 2005, he received three islet cell transplants at King’s College Hospital and became the first Type 1 diabetic in the UK to be able to stop taking insulin. The event takes place on Saturday July 18 from 2-4pm at the Beechwood Club, Beechwood Road, Fishponds. The group will also host a 2.5 mile health walk on Sunday August 16 at 10.30am from Snuff Mills car park which will follow the river up to the weir and back. Find out more about the group by visiting the website www. diabetesbristol.org.uk

BULLDOZERS have moved on to UWE’s St Matthias campus to start work on a 220-home housing estate. Barratt Homes were given planning permission for the scheme off Fishponds Road back in November. It will include two, three, four and five-bedroomed homes, with the first houses provisionally due for release next summer. Work started on Friday June 19. The Victorian buildings at the site now house the Steiner Academy Bristol which opened in September 2014. The planning application for the 18-acre site was a joint submitted jointly by Barratt Homes, Steiner Academy Bristol and UWE. Following UWE’s withdrawal from the site, courses transferred to the university’s Frenchay campus.

ONE is the image of the elderly Tory gentleman with his pipe and pint reading the Financial Times. We now consider ourselves to be The Fishponds Community Club, located in the heart of the Community and surrounded by the shopping centres, banking centres, parks and churches all just a few steps away. We are now part of the “Fishponds People” website and Facebook pages. Free community event in its 10th year THERE are few things in life that are free, but it appears the act of true altruism is alive and kicking in Fishponds. Volunteers from Fishponds Baptist Church held a free event for members to the community to enjoy. It featured numerous activities - barbecue, face-painting, bouncy castles, bungee run, eco art, toddler tent and live music - and they were all completely free of charge. The event was held at Fishponds Park on June 14 and is now in its 10th year.

A FUNDRAISER for Cossham Hospital takes place this weekend. Cossham Hospital League of Friends will hold a garden fete in grounds of the hospital on Saturday July 4 from 2pm. Attractions include a Punch and Judy show and the Bristol East and Kingswood Band. Stalls feature handicrafts, cuddly toys, books, bric-a-brac and much more. Homemade cakes and a variety of refreshments will be available. All proceeds go to the hospital.

Give yourself a break from recurring back pain With Steve Gooding @ The Uncommon Self hypnotherapy I’M sure break and back shouldn’t go together in a sentence however if you suffer from repetitive lower back pain it is possible to give yourself and your back a break and overcome those recurring painful episodes. I did and with a little work can too. More than 80 per cent of the population will at one time or another suffer from lower back pain. Most back problems will be non-specific, meaning there is no clear reason or diagnosis for the pain. More often than not a back pain episode will be a ‘one off’ occurrence, but for the unlucky few it will keep on returning, having a negative impact on their quality of life. I was one of these unlucky few. Over 18 years I tried almost all forms of treatment to ‘fix’ my back, from doctors, chiropractors, physiotherapists, to osteopaths, acupuncturists and other healthcare professionals. I also used copious amount of very strong pain killers and anti inflammatory medication. What ever I tried the pain always returned, becoming more intense and more debilitating and as the years passed. In this situation you either accept nothing will work and resign yourself to recurring pain or you don’t and you endeavour to treat yourself. My back pain experiences alongside my hypnotherapy skills gave me a way to overcome my chronic back pain. Through the application of a step by step process (backquack.com) along

(gradual stretching - within your limits) Reduce stress and stressful situations (relaxation techniques) Develop awareness of pain triggers (observation and defence) Remember give your back a break and allow it to repair by attaining the most beneficial posture possible in everything you do both at rest and when active.

Non specific back pain really isn’t something you need to put up with. Steve Gooding The Uncommon Self hypnotherapy 07586249903 www.backquack.com www.theuncommonself.com contact@theuncommonself.com

with hypnosis I found it possible to change damaging habits for healing ones, resulting in restful postures and neutral spine, reduced stress, and an increased awareness of back pain triggers. I’ve now been pain free for well over five years. I’m no longer anxious fearing the pain will return, and I’m back doing what I enjoy in life. If you’ve tried all avenues to overcome your pain but without success, ask yourself this very simple but fundamental question - why does my back pain keep returning? If there is no diagnosed cause the answer will probably be that the continuation of damaging habits leads to repetitive back pain! To achieve restful postures that help repair your back find your way to implement the five actions below and you will be on way to controlling your back pain. Become aware of and then gradually change damaging posture habits to reduce back stress Increase core strength for posture and spine support (exercise - within your limits). Fears for students as Soundwell campus closes SOUNDWELL’S College buildings will close to students for the last time this month following City of Bristol College’s decision to concentrate courses at its other sites. Local councillors and residents remain concerned that some young people from the disadvantaged areas close to the Soundwell Centre will drop out of education as a result. Staple Hill councillors Ian Boulton and Shirley Potts, with their Labour colleagues and council officers, have held talks with college leaders in the hope of securing another training provider for the campus but to no avail. Gareth Manson, who leads for his party on young people’s matters, said: “By withdrawing from Soundwell, City of Bristol College are forcing local young people to travel to alternative sites, some of which involve long and convoluted bus journeys. “Labour councillors have real concerns that some local young people will not travel long distances to attend college and will thus fall through the net. We remain committed to pressing for an alternative educational and training use for the site, but ever since the City of Bristol College sprung this

decision on us in March it has not seemed interested in working with local councillors to develop a plan for the future of the site that would benefit the local community.” About 1,800 students are based at Soundwell this year. Those whose courses are continuing have been given places at Ashley Down, Hengrove Park, College Green or Parkway, which the college says offer “better accommodation, improved facilities and an enriched student experience”. “We are working with students and their parent/carers who are continuing their courses or who are joining us in September to ensure that they are able to travel to their new centre of study,” a spokesman said. “We have arranged tours for students to get to know their new centre in good time for the start of the next academic year.” Councillor Manson has also won an assurance from council officials that they will work for grant funding for students who decide to switch to other schools or colleges to follow them. “There is a real chance that students will choose to attend different colleges instead, but we have been advised that funding for

colleges is already fixed for the next academic year. It would be completely wrong for the City of Bristol College to benefit from funding for students who feel that they have to move to another institution,” he said. Council officers will pursue the

matter directly with the Education Funding Agency and the Skills Funding Agency. It is understood the college plans to sell the buildings, one of which was built a little over 10 years ago.

Fury at Minister’s No to Cossham unit HEALTH Secretary Jeremy Hunt has given the green light to plans for minor injuries treatment centres in GP surgeries in South Gloucestershire rather than at a unit at Cossham Hospital. His announcement has angered campaigners for the Cossham minor injuries unit (MIU), who believe the decision was kept quiet until after the general election in May. South Gloucestershire Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) said it would now get on with the trial at surgeries, which had been “paused” following protests. Mr Hunt said it should let people know details such as the number, location, staffing, patient numbers and opening hours of the pilot centres, as soon as possible. Eighteen thousand people signed a petition in support of the Cossham Minor Injuries Unit, which was promised as part of the reopening of the hospital in January 2013 after a £19 million refurbishment. In a letter to Councillor Ian Scott, who was chairman of South Gloucestershire’s Council Public Health and Health Scrutiny Commission when it decided to refer the MIU changes to the NHS Independent Reconfiguration Panel, Mr Hunt said: “ I completely agree with the Panel that as new evidence

emerges, thinking moves on, and what might have been considered the right course of action in 2009 is not necessarily right for 2015. “Both the National Review of Urgent and Emergency Care Services and the local experience of Yate MIU have identified that earlier initiatives to alleviate the pressure on A&E services have not succeeded in reducing demand as hoped. “I share the Panel’s view that a new approach is therefore needed and that the South Gloucestershire CCG is right to consider alternatives.” The CCG welcomed Mr Hunt’s response. It said in a statement: “Developing a sustainable and effective urgent care system for South Gloucestershire, including a comprehensive and responsive community-based minor injuries service, is a top priority for the CCG and we are keen to progress this work as quickly as possible. “We had paused the process of reviewing options for minor injuries provision while the committee’s referral was being considered by the Secretary of State. Now that the referral process has concluded we will restart our work and look forward to discussing proposals with local people and scrutiny members over the coming months.” Councillor Scott said: “The

that Kingswood and East Bristol residents deserve and demand the same level of service delivered at Cossham.” He said the MIU was previously promised on the basis of need and that need was greater than ever because the area had a growing population. Kingswood’s Conservative MP Chris Skidmore, who was re-elected in May and is a supporter of the MIU, said on Twitter that he was very disappointed at the Panel’s decision. The matter is likely to be on the agenda of the scrutiny committee’s next meeting on July 8. The committee’s June meeting was cancelled.

Conservative Government’s decision not to support a Minor Injury Unit at Cossham will outrage residents and campaigners as they will clearly see that the decision has been cynically and politically delayed until after the General Election and South Gloucestershire Council’s local elections. Mr Hunt was sent the Panel’s assessment before the election, but the Conservatives chose not to announce this bad news until after they had secured people’s votes. “The South Bristol Community Hospital has a Minor Injury Unit that is open 7 days a week from 8 o’clock in the morning till 8 o’clock at night. The facilities are lovely and spacious and the rooms feel comfortable and secure. “The team who looked after me here were just brilliant – so encouraging and supportive.” As a souvenir of the occasion, Daniel was presented with a commemorative Bristol Blue plaque. Cossham Birth Centre opened in January 2013 and was the first midwife-led birth centre in the local area. The centre, on the top floor of the refurbished Cossham Hospital in Kingswood, offers four birthing rooms complete with birthing pools and double beds. Official opening of nursery by ‘Wendover babies’ A CROWD of “Wendover babies” lined up to mark the official opening of the Red Bus Nursery in Downend. They were all born in the building when it was a maternity hospital more than 35 years ago. The group watched as Downend councillor and vice chair of South Gloucestershire Council Kathy Morris cut the ribbon to launch the new venture. Owner Liz Hogarth, who

opened her first Red Bus Nursery in Coombe Dingle three years ago, used to live in Downend and has overseen an ambitious refurbishment of the Grade ll listed building in Downend Road. She said: “It is a very, very proud day to see how we have been able to transform Wendover House. It is a beautiful building. We knew it, even though it was a bit dilapidated. “It has been a great pleasure bringing it back to life for something

that is going to link into the local community.” The launch event included a Mad Hatter’s Tea Party, with some staff in splendid costumes, while senior manager Su Walter, herself a Wendover baby, entered into the spirit by sporting a dress and even tights covered in red buses. The nursery takes children aged from three months to five and has a total of 109 places in its nursery, kindergarten and pre-school.

Selfies with Greg a big hit at tennis club’s celebration GREG Rusedski, former UK No.1 and World No.4 tennis player, visited Downend & Frenchay Tennis Club to celebrate the opening of its new home and facilities. The former Downend & Fishponds LTC has moved from Cleeve Hill to a site at Frenchay Cricket Club, where it has four floodlit courts, as well as access to the cricket club’s facilities. Greg’s visit on June 14 coincided with the Lawn Tennis Association’s (LTA) Great British Tennis Weekend,

where families could come along and have a hit with Greg and play tennis for free. Besides the chance to meet and have a “selfie” with Greg, tennis fans of all ages and abilities took advantage of the good weather to enjoy some fun and games on the tennis courts. Head coach Pete Caseley said: “Greg was brilliant. The moment he arrived he was straight on court to coach the kids. He was more than happy to pose for photos and sign autographs too. We were very lucky to have him. He is a true ambassador for the sport. I think everybody here was inspired and even the coaches picked up a few tips! We can’t wait to have him back – hopefully he’ll make a return visit next year!” Other invited guests included Jack Lopresti MP for Filton & Bradley Stoke and Angela Haymonds, Cory Environmental Trust in Britain (CETB) Secretary who said: “The CETB Trustees are pleased to have contributed to this project, which will enable the club to broaden its coaching efforts, build closer connections with schools and attract new members of all ages from the local community.”

Greg Rusedski turned professional in 1991 and played until his retirement on 7 April 2007, at the age of 33. He was UK number 1 in 1997 and again in 1999 and reached the ATP ranking of World No. 4. He reached the US Open final in 1997 and received the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award in the same year. Greg is still heavily involved in the sport and can be regularly seen

on television providing commentary and analysis on the US Open and ATP World Tour Events. To continue the celebrations, Downend & Frenchay TC has a number of exciting offers including family membership for £30 during June, July and August plus free taster sessions. Please email info@ downendandfrenchay.co.uk for more information.

On the treatment table with Dr Tim Button Doctor of Chiropractic at Cleve Chiropractic and Next Step Centre

S

O having recovered from Wembley last month (that’s the only mention of football this month, I promise!) we are now into the, finally, sunny month of July. The summer months bring all of the summer sports and sports injuries that we treat at Cleve Chiropractic and Next Step. Without giving names away for data protection purposes, we are now seeing a number of GB tennis players and GB track runners. Despite the lack of press these guys get, Bristol really does produce quite a few talented athletes. We are seeing a number of different athletes from both Yate and Whitehall athletics clubs and tennis players from various local clubs and the main training base in the region, Team Bath Tennis Academy. Since working at London 2012 I have become friends with many of the coaches and athletes from the local athletic clubs. They are such great clubs that are full of friendly people and truly world-class coaches. One particular patient who came to see me regarding her back complaint 3 or so years ago was a young lady called Bethany Tucker. She was also frustrated with her cerebral palsy (CP). Having worked with GB CP athletes for the London Paralympics at Bath University training village I knew that sprinting could be a potential avenue for Beth to explore. I worked with Rob Elchuck (a superb experienced

Canadian sprint coach working for GB). Working with Rob at the track I also met with Mark Lodge, the sprint coach working with Elite and amateur athletes at Yate athletics club. I put Beth in touch with Mark (as it was conveniently Beth’s local club as well) and soon enough Beth started to show her potential as a 100m sprinter. Mark was so impressed with her aptitude to sprinting that he soon put her into Paralympic criteria testing and Beth is now officially a T37 athlete. Beth is performing so well that in one 100m race this season she smashed her personal best and came 2nd in the UK. All of the people around Beth have witnessed the transformation in her. It’s not just that she is running so well in such a short period of time, she is happier, more focused and satisfied with life than I have ever known her. She no longer sees her CP as a ‘disability’ rather she sees it as a ticket to greatness. CP no longer defines her as she develops her strong, contented independence leading to success in life as well as sport. If you know of anybody with CP or any other ‘Paralympic potential condition’ who you think could be helped from the all round benefits of athletics then please seek out Mark at Yate athletics club. chance to talk to Beth then you will be able to find her training at Yate or on her Twitter page, @BTuckerT37. Finally, for the Mollyettes who lambasted me for not mentioning her at all last month, she is now firmly walking and climbing. It’s a really fun age as she can now explore all of the world from 2ft tall and learn that not all things taste nice, like mud, stones, buttercups, insects and feathers (sigh).
