Not so fast food! Double helping of burgers on hold BURGERS remain off the menu in Fishponds as the neighbourhood awaits developments on two planning applications. Scores of people have written in support of a proposed new restaurant, The Burger Joint, in the centre of the shopping area. And McDonald’s has, as expected, launched an appeal against the refusal of permission for a large takeaway and drive-through further down Fishponds Road at the site of a former Tile Depot. The Burger Joint has two others restaurants in Bristol: Whiteladies Road and North Street, Bedminster. It wants to open a 40-seat diner with additional tables outside in the former card and gift shop near Porto Lounge and Shaws. Its application to Bristol City Council says it would not have a takeaway service. The independent local chain Burger Joint has built a strong reputation for quality food, earning many rave reviews and awards. Supporters say it would be another asset to Fishponds. As Fishponds Voice went to

print, a ruling was due on whether its application would go to a planning committee for a decision or be determined by a council officer. The level of interest, with many – though by no means all – letters coming from local people is likely to mean it is aired in public by councillors. Multinational chain McDonald’s announced in early August that it would appeal against the council decision in February to refuse its Fishponds plans, following a

Bring back the 81 bus

vociferous local campaign. However, the Planning Inspectorate, which will hear the appeal, has a ten-week processing backlog. Pauline Shaw, of the Say No to McDonald’s in Fishponds group, said it had been advised to wait until it received confirmation that the appeal was valid before launching its next stage of action. Protesters will have five weeks to lodge their objections.

A PETITION has been launched in an attempt to get a bus service reinstated between Fishponds and Kingswood along Lodge Causeway. Organisers say elderly people have no means of getting to Cossham Hospital or the nearby Lodgeside Surgery or to GP practices in Fishponds now that the 81 bus has been withdrawn. Bus operator First brought in route changes on August 23 with the aim of improving punctuality of services and, ironically, improving access to hospitals. But some elderly people living near Lodge Causeway say they are not able to walk uphill to the nearest stop on Hillfields Avenue for the 17 service. One resident said: “Many pensioners and disabled people relied on the 81 service to get to the surgeries in Beechwood Road and Manor Road and the many shops in Fishponds. One pensioner aged 90 has already had a fall.” Another said: “This is not acceptable. Fishponds is out of bounds for these people.” Copies of the petition are in the shops in Lodge Causeway.

Green-fingered project brightens up local parks A GREEN-FINGERED project is not only benefiting local parks but improving volunteers’ job prospects. The ParkWork project is being run from its base at Eastville Park and offers volunteering opportunities to people who are unemployed. Tasks include bench and foot path maintenance, putting in recycling bins, step building and tree and shrub pruning. During an eight-week programme, the scheme offers volunteers the chance to learn skills, build confidence and gain valuable work experience to help them secure employment. It has been running since March and teams have worked in various sites across the city including Eastville Park, St George’s Park, Troopers Hill, Ashton Court and along the Bristol to Bath railway path. ParkWork co-ordinator Joe Mckenna said a number of volunteers had gained employment as a direct result of attending the programme: “I feel passionately that practical, work-based training is a fantastic way to inspire individuals who are looking for employment but are in need of basic training, support and a little direction.

“ParkWork aims to offer worthwhile placements to individuals through work-based training, whilst also carrying out improvements within Bristol’s parks and open spaces.” A key part of ParkWork’s role is to form links with action groups associated with each park and work with them on projects which they

feel would improve the space and make it more accessible to users. Volunteers are referred to ParkWork through a number of work placement agencies as well as from organisations working with adults with special needs and/or with mental health issues. The ParkWork team works with Bristol City Council’s parks department and action groups to identify improvements which could be carried out. Tasks are selected for their ability to offer the most interesting and useful skills training but also

make a significant difference to the park. Current projects include building steps through the woods at Troopers Hill and renovating benches at Eastville and St George’s parks. The teams have also been involved in putting recycling bins in various sites across the city including Oldbury Court and St George’s Park as well as planting trees and hedging on Horfield Common as part of the council’s ‘One Tree One Child’ project.

THE OWNER of an ex-industrial building in Speedwell, occupied by around 40 businesses, left the premises so filthy that workers preferred to go to the toilet outside. Bristol property owner Alan Dykes has now been jailed for eight months for health and safety offences at the former Strachan and Henshaw site in Foundry Lane. He pleaded guilty to five health and safety at work offences at Bristol Magistrates Court and was also ordered to pay prosecution costs of £7,660. The case follows many visits to the former Strachan and Henshaw site by health and safety inspectors from Bristol City Council’s public protection team over several years. The team had given advice and served notices requiring improvements in the safety management at the large, multioccupied site but no sustained improvements were noted. About 40 businesses occupy the site and the problems included electrical hazards, asbestos, a leaking roof, blocked fire exits and lack of lighting. The toilets were filthy and poorly maintained which resulted in some workers at the building preferring to use a fire exit corridor or the yard outside. During an operation coordinated by police in August 2013, a health and safety inspector found

Owner jailed over filthy premises serious electrical hazards, and served an improvement notice that was not complied with. Other offences included failing to keep the site clean, failing to keep it in good repair, failing to manage the asbestos so as to prevent occupants and visitors breathing in fibres, and a general failure to manage the site so as to ensure that the tenants had a safe and healthy place to work. Heather Clarke, health and safety inspector at Bristol City Council, said “We have spent many hours at this site over the years and given Mr Dykes a lot of advice and assistance, but there has never been a sustained improvement and we have become seriously worried about the risks to both the health and safety of tenants. In the end we took the decision to prosecute as it seems the only way to deal with this matter.” Mr Dykes pleaded guilty to all charges which covered the period from June 2011 to January 2014. He said that he believed that some of the works had been done and he has spent a lot of money on the electrical system recently, but he has now realised that he needs to do more.

In summing up, the chair of the magistrates said that the evidence showed an escalating pattern of failure to comply with legal requirements and a persistent and wilful disregard for health and safety. She said that the bench felt that Mr Dykes had showed no sense of remorse and had no regard for his responsibilities as a landlord. Back to school? Young readers are so keen that they return to class in the holidays

YOUNGSTERS from Glenfrome primary love reading so much they came into school during the summer holidays. Once a week, pupils took part in Read on Wednesday at the school in Cottisford Road, Eastville. The sessions were the brainchild of Claire Banham, an award-winning reading teacher, who noticed that some of the youngest children tend to fall behind after the long summer break. In order for them to have the best possible start in Year 1, the children were invited to take part in reading sessions, with prizes for those who attended five out of six. The children enjoyed collecting stamps on their bookmarks each week so they could claim their prize. The sessions were staffed by teachers and reading specialists who know the children well. Parents watched teachers listen to their children read and picked up tips for supporting their child with reading at home. All children were able to pop in to the school to change their library books throughout the holidays. This is the second year the school has run the scheme, and staff say it has a positive impact on children and their ability to read. The reaction from parents and children alike has been very positive. Parent Erica Simpson said: “The sessions have been really valuable. We would not normally be able to watch our children read to the professionals, and it’s great to see how it’s done.” Headteacher Inger O’Callaghan said: “The ultimate prize for all our children is the world of learning that is unlocked by being a fluent reader. It is a joy to see how hard the children are working to achieve this.” Glenfrome has won a national award for the teaching of reading. Heroes and Villains on the Scarecrow Trail EXCITEMENT is mounting and last minute preparations are underway for Fishponds’ 2015 scarecrow trail. The event, on September 19 and 20, follows on from the success of its trial run last year. And with the theme of Heroes and Villains, it promises to be even bigger and more popular. Judges include Lizzie Kesteven, vicar of All Saints and St Mary’s churches; Frome Vale councillor Lesley Alexander; Mark Neath, chairman of Grove Road Youth Club and resident scarecrow expert, seven-year-old Holly. Last year around 30 scarecrows, dressed as children’s film characters, including Sponge Bob and Freddy Krueger, were dotted around the area in residents’ front gardens. Residents were invited to pick up a map and walk around the district looking out for the scarecrows and trying to guess their characters. Kate Brooks, one of the organisers, said: “It’s a fun competition and all people need to do is put a scarecrow in their front garden on those dates and let us know. Maps will be available from Fishponds Play Cafe and the Kingfisher Cafe and will contain clues as to the characters of the

heroes and villains. It doesn’t cost anything to enter; it’s just a bit of fun for the neighbourhood. “If people wanted to do other

activities around their scarecrow they would be more than welcome, perhaps sell cakes or teas and coffees from a stall outside their

house. They just need to let us know. “Last year was great. Lots of people saw the scarecrows and

walked around and met new neighbours. It was mostly around the Thingwall area so we are hoping it will be wider this time. “It’s great for bringing the community together. People love getting out and about and it’s a way to find new part of your area that you didn’t know existed especially all the nice green spaces we have in Fishponds.” Kate said there were various categories the scarecrows would be judged on including most innovative use of recycling, humour and design innovation. It’s not too late to enter as long as you contact the organisers by September 10. Please email Angie Seward splat.monster@googlemail. com with your name, address, contact email, your scarecrow character and a clue to your character which will be printed on the map.

FISHFEST will be back again next year, Fishponds Voice can exclusively reveal. Organisers took a break this year to consider their options which cast doubt upon the popular festival’s future. However, they have now decided the festival will go ahead in 2016, although details, including the date, have yet to be determined. Kate Brooks, one of the FishFest organisers, said: “We are going for it next year. We’re just deciding whether to have it in July or September. There’s pros and cons to each month. July is good because people are still around and haven’t left for their holidays yet and September can be good as the weather can be a bit more predictable and you don’t have all the end of term activities to worry about clashing with. It also depends on when funding is available but something will definitely be happening.”

Appeal to vandals who trashed Conor’s bench THE SISTER of a Fishponds teenager who died in a moped accident has issued an emotional appeal to vandals who have targeted a bench set up in her brother’s memory. Kayleigh Hall and her family have been left devastated after photos and cards were ripped from the memorial bench in King George V Playing Fields in Downend. Burn marks have also been left near the bench, evidence the vandals had been trying to light fires, and litter left strewn around, despite there being a bin nearby. The bench was placed in the park in memory of Conor Hall who died in June 2011 after his moped crashed in Charlton Road, Kingswood. The 16-year-old was taken to Frenchay Hospital and put on a life support machine but died five days later. It was discovered that former Downend School pupil Conor hadn’t clipped up the strap of his motorcycle helmet - and that if he had fastened it, it may have saved his life. Following his death, his family launched Clip Up For Conor, an organisation which fundraises for good causes and highlights the importance of making sure helmets

Conor Hall are both worn and fastened. Kayleigh, 23, said she wanted to appeal to the trouble makers to stop. “We want to get the message out there that whoever is doing this, stop. If you are going to use the bench, that’s fine, but treat it with respect because it’s for other people to use as well.” Kayleigh, a former John Cabot student, said the vandals had left the area around the bench had been left in a mess. “We went up there at the start of the school holidays and noticed things were missing but didn’t think anything of it because things like that had happened before.

in June had been ripped off. One was dumped into some water and the other is still missing. We had two photos on the bench, one was a family picture and the other was one of Conor, and they had both been ripped. “The area was trashed with litter. Every time we went there we would have to pick it all up. There was broken glass and cans which had been ripped in half and left jagged and sharp. If children or animals were around the bench they would have hurt themselves.” The family, who live in Fishponds, took to social media to help spread the word. “We put a notice on Facebook to say we don’t want people vandalising the bench because it was put there for everyone to use not just Conor’s friends and his family.” To add insult to injury the family were told that a gang who had been seen by the bench had been riding motorcycles without helmets - one of the issues that the family had worked so hard to stamp out with their campaign. “That was quite distressing to us,” said Kayleigh. “The whole thing we do with Clip Up For Conor is to raise awareness about mopeds and safety. To ride without a helmet around a bench which was put in place for someone who has lost their  life for not wearing their helmet

correctly is devastating. It’s not only disrespectful to us; it’s disrespectful to Conor. “They might think they are invincible and it’ll never happen to them. They might think it’s cool to ride around with no helmet but actually it’s not. They are putting their lives at risk. They need to put themselves in our position and think what would their families be thinking if it was them on a life support machine like Conor.” When the family returned to the bench to check on the vandalism they noticed there had been patches of fire that had been lit around it.

“There were fire-lighters and you could see someone had been trying to light a fire but we don’t believe anyone was purposely trying to set fire to the bench,” said Kayleigh. “We just don’t want them to do it near the bench as it’s highly inflammable because it’s coated with creosote. If the fire had caught onto the bench, it would have gone up in flames.” Realising things were getting out of hand, Kayleigh and her family contacted the police. “It was when we started to see the fires around the bench that we

started to get worried. Donations from Conor’s friends and from the public have gone into buying the bench and if it goes up in flames we won’t be able to replace it. “The police are doing extra patrols and, touch wood, we haven’t had anyone get in touch in the last few weeks to report any more vandalism so I hope it’s now stopped.” The incidents have provoked an outcry from supporters of Clip Up For Conor, many of whom took to the campaign’s Facebook page to show their disgust. “Some people are so sick nowadays...I am so sorry to hear this,” wrote one woman. Another said: “I can’t quite understand why anyone would be so mindless and cruel.” Kayleigh said she believes the people responsible knew the bench was a memorial for Conor. “It wouldn’t surprise me if they knew what the bench was for. We have a Clip Up For Conor poster on the bench which promotes what we do and Conor was quite well known in the Downend area. If they do, it’s even more hurtful.” Kayleigh said they chose a bench in the shape of a smile because Conor was always smiling. The family now hope to sand the bench down and replace the cresote with a non-flammable paint.

Read the small print

O

VER the past decade or so, veterinary care has come on leaps and bounds. We now have many more diagnostic tests at our disposal. Increasing numbers of referral centres are popping up all over the UK with access to CT scans, MRI’s and specialist surgery such as that seen on ’The Supervet’. Pet insurance helps take away a lot of stress should your pet need hospitalisation at your veterinary practice or requires referral. By investing time and finding a good policy it often means more treatment options are available. There are a lot of policies out there which can make it hard to choose the best one for you. Always go for the best you can afford and make sure you read the small print. Here are some things to look out for when shopping for insurance policies: The financial limit per condition. With some policies once this limit is reached the owner will have to pay the rest of the bill, whilst other policies will renew the ‘money pot’ each year, providing you stay with them.

Accident/illness cover. Any insurance policy which covers accident alone will not cover conditions which are medical. This could include a stomach bug which requires hospitalisation, diabetes, liver disease etc. A policy which covers accident and illness is much more comprehensive. Excesses. Some will be a set amount, whilst others may be percentages of the bill. Exclusions. Some policies will have exclusions in the small print. ALWAYS check these. Pre-existing conditions. If your animal has had any health problems prior to taking out the policy then any illness relating to that illness may not be covered by the insurance. This is particularly important should you change insurance companies part way through treatment. We offer 4 weeks free insurance for all new patients under 1 year who have had a vet consultation. If this is of interest to you please call us on 0117 961 6417. We look forward to seeing you!

A POLICE officer based at Fishponds is among the community heroes from across Avon and Somerset who have been presented with an award in recognition of their outstanding work. PC Martin Hudd was honoured with a PCC Pride Award at a recent ceremony at police headquarters in Portishead. Martin helped diffuse community tension and was nominated by a Mr Dowsett who had been reluctant to contact police regarding the issues he was facing because he didn’t feel they would be deemed an emergency. Mr Dowsett said: “Martin listened, understood and believed me. He dealt with the matter so skilfully and is a great example of effective and efficient policing.” PC Hudd said: “This nomination was completely out of the blue. I do my job to provide long term solutions to problems experienced in the local community rather than to get recognition but I’m delighted to receive this award.” Avon and Somerset Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) Sue Mountstevens was joined by Avon and Somerset Police’s Assistant Chief Constable Nikki Watson for the ceremony to celebrate officers and staff making a difference in the communities that they serve. Nominations came from members of the public, from across Avon and Somerset and recipients included police officers, a police community support officer and a local council Anti-Social Behaviour caseworker. PCC Sue Mountstevens said: “It is clear from my discussions with local people that there are many individuals going above and beyond what is expected of them. These silent stars play an outstanding role

in making our communities safer and stronger. They are a credit to the public that they serve and it is important that we take the time to recognise their exceptional work.” People are encouraged to put names forward as nominations for the PCC’s Pride Awards. The awards are open all year round and decisions are made quarterly.Visit www.avonandsomerset-pcc.gov.uk to make a nomination. Other PCC Pride Awards were presented to the following individuals: PC Chris Rogers – Emersons Green and Chipping Sodbury PC Rogers, a response officer, had been nominated by a local family who said they wanted Chris to be recognised for his high standard of professionalism. They said he showed empathy and compassion when dealing with their family and described him as dedicated in getting to the truth and remaining completely impartial. In their nomination the family said: “We have never met such a genuinely nice person who is as sincere as Chris. Our family hold him in very high esteem.” PC Rogers said: “I am surprised and delighted to have been nominated. I was simply doing my job – listening and helping members of the public. It means a lot to me that it has touched the local community.” PC Stuart King – Bristol Stuart is responsible for the introduction of a GPS safety device as part of a dementia missing person harm reduction initiative. dementia sufferers. He recognised the benefits of the scheme and following a lot of hard work, the device is now available and supporting people in their everyday lives. Stuart was nominated by Pat Lacey, whose husband suffers from dementia and uses a device. She said: “The monitor gives my husband freedom and provides me with reassurance every day. Stuart has been brilliant.” PC King said: “It is lovely to know that the initiative is helping people to feel safe and secure. It’s not a substitute for care but will hopefully give many people a degree of autonomy that they may not otherwise have.” PCSO Sheryl Drewitt – Filton Sheryl was nominated by a resident after she helped them in securing and gating several of the alleyways at the back of their homes in the Filton area. After residents had campaigned for seven years, Sheryl helped to secure funding, rallied support and implemented the necessary changes to secure the area. Sheryl’s nominator said: “We really needed her help and she was there for us, all the time – and believe me, it took time! Thank you so much Sheryl.” PCSO Drewitt said: “I was shocked but overjoyed to be

A FISHPONDS flower show certainly got its fair share of visiting dignitaries this year. Among the guests at the 9th Fishponds Horticultural Show was the deputy Lord Mayor, councillor Alastair Watson, his wife Sarah, the deputy Lady Mayoress, and Frome Vale councillor Lesley Alexander. The show was hosted by Activate/Fishponds and held at Fishponds Methodist Church Hall in Guinea Lane. Organiser Mary Berrington said: “The weather was good and from 9am contributors queued up with their entries. Numbers were up this year and the tables soon filled up. “Then came the judging and in some of the classes they had a difficult time sorting out the 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes. “There were vegetables, fruit, flowers photos, handicraft, art and baking and the task for the local junior schools this year was to paint individual pebbles.” Once prizes were decided, visitors were let in and the show was opened by the deputy Lord

Cllr Alexander presented the cup for the highest overall points in the show, which was won jointly by Chris Williams and Elfrie Gonzalez. “As Mrs Williams had won the cup last year, she felt that Mrs Gonzalez should hold it for this year,” said Mary. The afternoon was not all about winning, however, as there was a raffle and visitors were encouraged to guess the weight of a cake and a guess the number of sweets in a jar. Mary said: “Hugh Parry brought his excellent locally produced honey to sell and there were refreshments of tea and cakes served by the local Guides. Finally the afternoon closed with a sale of cakes, jams and produce and a good time was had by all.” If you would like to enter an exhibit next year, look out for details at the beginning of the summer.

Glenside museum to take part in Open Doors Day

A FASCINATING museum in Fishponds which explores the subject of mental illness will be taking part in Bristol’s Open Doors Day. Glenside Hospital Museum, on the site of UWE’s Glenside Campus, will throw open its doors on Saturday September 12 as part of the popular citywide annual event. The museum’s extensive collection of artefacts from the days of Glenside Hospital gives an insight into the life of patients and the staff who cared for people with mental illness. Although the museum tackles medical matters, there is something to interest everyone, from straitjackets and a padded cell, to photographs and drawings of staff and patients. The museum was founded by Dr Donal Early, a consultant psychiatrist at Glenside Hospital from the 1950s. His collection of memorabilia was originally housed in the dining room of the hospital but was moved to the chapel on the same site when the hospital closed in 1994 after serving the community for 133 years. The museum has no paid members of staff and relies on volunteers from the Friends of Glenside Hospital Museum to stay open. The museum will be open from 10am4pm on Open Doors Day. If you can’t make it then, the museum is open every Wednesday and Saturday morning from 10am to 12.30pm and entry free. If you would like to visit with a group on a different day, it is possible to arrange for the museum to be open by appointment. For details telephone 0117 965 2829. ALD to move from Lodge Causeway

Minion invasion at Kingfisher Cafe VISITORS to the Kingfisher Cafe in Fishponds this summer have been greeted by a yellow one-eyed creature - but there's no cause for alarm. The knitted yellow and blue Minion proved as popular an attraction as Shaun the Sheep, prompting people who walked by to stop to take selfies with the one-metre high creation. The Minion, who is unnamed but definitely female, was created by the Get Knitted Knutters who got to work with their knitting needles during one of their craft sessions at the cafe. Sadly, the Minion was returned to its creators at the end of August. Cafe supervisor Lauren Walls, 22, said: "We wanted to make the front of the cafe look a bit more interesting and more inviting. "She was a lot of fun and attracted lots of attention. Quite a lot of people have come past and have taken selfies and photographs with her." Meanwhile, the cafe continues to hold events for the community. A night market featuring artwork and jewellery takes place this Saturday (September 5) from 6-9pm followed by a spiritualist night on Friday September 25. A craft club, called the Crafting Bee, also takes place in the cafe which is aimed at people honing their various artistic skills whilst meeting new people and takes place on the first and third Tuesday of the month from 7-9pm. Staff at the cafe are behind a move to see a farmers' market return to Straits Parade. Plans are moving forward but a date for the first one is yet to be established. Last month the cafe hosted a mini market with with food stalls and a vintage clothes rail to allow visitors to have their say on what they would like to see at a

The Minion with cafe staff members Lauren Walls and Sophie Lyons farmers' market. Lauren, who lives in Fishponds and has worked at the cafe since January, said: "We're trying to work with local people to get it set up. We're hosting a few events like mini markets to raise the profile of the farmers' market and meet with people who are interested in setting one up so we can figure out how we are going to run them. "We'd like to start as soon as possible but are still in the planning process of setting one up on Straits Parade which involves liaising with the council." The cafe will hold another mini market on Thursday September 10 at 6pm.

VEHICLE leasing firm ALD Automotive has announced plans to move from Fishponds to a new site in Emersons Green. The firm has been granted permission for a new £12 million development at Vertex Park and says it hopes to complete the switch from its Lodge Causeway headquarters within the next 18 months. The purpose-built, 36,000 sq ft offices four miles away will provide much-needed space for further recruitment and planned expansion, the company says. Mel Dawson, managing director of ALD Automotive, said: “We moved to our current location in 1995, following a management buyout, when we had less than 100 staff and, since then, we have grown significantly and now have almost 400 employees. “Being part of an international group that manages over one million vehicles in 40 countries it’s important that our new office environment reflects the size of the business we now are and allows us to continue our planned expansion, helps us to operate more effectively”

Children set to join new Colour Fun Run YOUNGSTERS have pledged their support for a huge fundraising event at Oldbury Court Estate in Fishponds. Tots at Hillsides Secret Garden Day Nursery and youngsters from The Tynings School, both in Staple Hill, will be supporting the charity St Vincent’s when they take part in The Colour Fun Run later this month. They will join other children and adults who will follow a route around the estate whilst getting splashed with brightly coloured powder paint along the way. The fun run is in aid of the Bristol-based addiction recovery charity which provides residential support for people in recovery from addiction who would otherwise be homeless or in prison. The children have already been getting in on the action and have had lots of fun trying out the powder paint ahead of the run on Sunday September 27. Amy Nicholls, one of the managers at Hillsides Secret Garden Nursery, said: “We love getting a bit messy at Hillsides and this is a brilliant way to raise money for a local charity whilst exploring colours and being active.” Lisa Leigh-Gilchrist, who is also a manager at the nursery, said: “St

Vincent’s do an amazing job of supporting those in recovery from addiction and we’re really pleased to support them, especially if it gives us an excuse to run around and have fun.” Joanne Bamford, St Vincent’s events fundraiser, said: “We’re really pleased to have received great support from the local community and with both children and adults taking part together I think the event will be a real spectacle as Bristol’s newest Colour Run. “With the summer holidays almost over The Colour Fun Run is a great way to get the children excited as they return back to school. Spaces are filling up fast, so I encourage anyone interested in taking part to register soon.” Colour Fun runner Wayne Delve-Roberts, from Stapleton, is also looking forward to the event. “I’m hoping it will encourage my six-year-old to come running with me,” he said. “I also enjoy helping others and meeting new friends and who doesn’t like being doused in paint powder?” All funds raised from the event will help St Vincent’s to continue its work in helping some of the area’s most vulnerable men and women

as they try to rebuild a happy future for themselves. The untimed run is open to

Scout hut’s story of survival

WHEN Stapleton’s Scout Hut needed replacing in the early 1960s, the troop was delighted to be offered two free buildings. The only snag was that they had to dismantle the 120ft huts, transport them from Clifton, and put them together again. The scouts accepted the challenge and after a couple of years’ hard work they got them to to the site in Stonechat Gardens in 1965. And, in spite of a couple of a major fires, the wooden scout headquarters is still going strong half a century later. So too are two of the people

who helped move the huts. Paul Churchill and Chris Scott joined the 197th Bristol (1st Stapleton) scouts from a troop in Eastville as 15-year-olds – and have been there ever since. Group scout leader Paul and group chairman Chris have seen generations of boys and, more recently, girls, go through the Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorer Scouts. And now they are inviting them back to a reunion to mark the

Stapleton Scout Hut at Stonechat Gardens golden jubilee of the headquarters. They are particularly keen to see anyone who was involved during those early days and shares their memories of the epic move. “The 1930s huts were donated by some solicitors called Gleed in Guthrie Road and we brought them from Clifton on the back of a plumbers’ lorry,” recalled Chris. “At the time it was surrouned by prefabs, before houses were build in the Seventies.” The group’s records include

Scout veterans Paul Churchill and Chris Scott

a press cutting from 1965 and a typed history, which reveals that scout troop was formed in 1942 by Mr Walter Gross, who became scoutmaster in 1946. Early meetings were held in a stable and later in the schoolroom, before the move to a hut on the present site in 1952. The headquarters was damaged by fire in the 1970s when hay for a horse grazing in the field was set alight. Arsonists struck again four years ago, but leaders, scouts and parents rallied round to raise funds

to help rebuild it. Many people have fond memories of weekly activities at the hut, as well as special events such as barbecues and Bonfire Night. One mystery donor gave £5,000 to the group, while another, who attended even before Paul and Chris, visited and handed over £1,000. The anniversary special event is planned for Saturday October 10, from 5-9pm. For further information, please contact Chris Scott on 07783 468208

STAPLE Hill Women’s Institute is expanding - its numbers not members’ waistlines … “although we do like our cakes”. As a result, from this month meetings will take place at a new venue. Spokeswoman Val Todd said: “Our meeting room at Staple Hill Methodist Church was getting a bit cramped, so we have taken a deep breath, looked at other local venues and are moving to Christchurch Parish Hall in North Street, Downend.” Meetings are held at 7.30pm on the third Tuesday of each month. The WI will, however, retain its links with Staple Hill Methodist Church, using it for coffee mornings. The next one is on Saturday November 28. To find out more, visit the website (www.staplehillwi.weebly.com) or email staplehillwi@outlook.com for details of the programme. a

The press article from 1965

D-day on Colston’s homes bid CAMPAIGNERS were hopeful of victory in their battle to stop a housing development in part of the grounds of Colston’s School at Stapleton. Bristol City Council’s planning committee was due to make its decision on Wednesday September 2. The developers, Woodstock Homes, had submitted revised plans for nine luxury houses, rather than ten luxury and two affordable homes. But planning officers were recommending refusal. Their report concluded: “Residential development on this site is considered unacceptable in principle as it will result in the loss of an Important Open Space. The proposed development would also fail to preserve known heritage assets. The submitted scheme is also considered unacceptable in terms of poor design and layout, inadequate access, potential impact on flood risk.” More than 260 letters opposing the original scheme were submitted to the council and objections were still going in on the revised plans as Voice went to print.

Students notch up A-level successes YOUNG people from Fishponds and the surrounding area are off to universities across the country this month after achieving some spectacular A-level results. Three of the top performers at City of Bristol College were Danielle Futcher, Josh Keeling and Kieran Kaur. Danielle, 18, from Fishponds, will study law at Cardiff University after achieving A grades in sociology, law and psychology; Josh, 18, from Soundwell, gained an A* in Art and As in both film studies and English language and Kieran, 18, from Frenchay, sealed a place to study psychology at the University of Birmingham with an A* in psychology and A grades in English language and media studies. Students from state-run and independent schools across Bristol saw some strong individual successes, with a number of students winning places at Oxford or Cambridge. Katie Woods, from Downend, head girl at Redland High School last year, is going to Queens’ College, Cambridge, having achieved A*/A grades in history, English and psychology. Ben Hubbert, from Emersons Green, will read maths at Balliol

College in Oxford after gaining A*s in maths, further maths and chemistry A-levels at Downend School. He said: “I was predicted to do well but I wasn’t quite expecting to get the top grade in all three. It is overwhelming. I can’t quite believe it has happened.” David Baker, from Downend, is going to study natural sciences at Cambridge after achiving an amazing five A*s at Mangotsfield School in physics, chemistry, maths, further maths and an Extended Project Qualification. David hopes to eventually complete a PhD and go on to a career in physics research. Fergus Higgins, of Mangotsfield, gained two A*s and an A at Bristol Cathedral Choir School, comfortably meeting the requirements of Oriel College, Oxford, for a place to read theology. He also gained an A* grade on his Extended Project Qualification dissertation, which looked at the ordination of women. Other high achievers include Jasmine Lalli, from Downend, who gained three A* grades at Colston’s Girls’ School and will study law at Birmingham, and Kate Taylor, from Downend, who secured a place at

Danielle Futcher Southampton University to study physics after achieving A grades in maths and physics and a B in

chemistry at St Brendan’s Sixth Form College.

Exceptional progress again at Bristol Met

BRISTOL Metropolitan Academy has again notched up impressive exam results, with many students making exceptional progress. Ninety nine per cent of students at the inclusive academy gained a GCSE pass, with 37 per cent of the cohort claiming at least one A* or A grade. Boys and girls performed equally well on the very highest grades, bucking the national trend of male underachievement; similarly students from a range of ethnicities and starting points shared the top results. The school’s Head Boy and Head Girl led the way in academic study, and were among the highest achievers. Principal Sally Apps said: “We are delighted for our students who have yet again proved that with hard work you can achieve excellence, no matter what your starting point. We have seen some exceptional individual performances from students and their teachers, and must congratulate them on their successes. GCSEs truly are a 0105 SBL Open day Advert team effort and we are grateful to our community and our families

Bristol Brunel and John Cabot success

for the support they have offered throughout their children’s school careers”. Since opening in 2009, Bristol Met has improved year on year, with students at all levels of ability performing better than their peers across the country. In 2014 the school saw progress ranked as the highest in Bristol and the third highest in the country. At Post 16 level, Bristol Met students have continued to add value in both vocational and academic courses, with the average grade being higher than a Merit for vocational courses. Ninety six per cent of students gained passes, with 42 per cent of students achieving grades at B or higher in academic courses. As in previous years, a number of students secured their first-choice university places. Mrs Apps said: “I’m delighted for our students who have worked so hard to achieve so highly. As our school continues to develop and improve our curriculum offer, our students are matching our efforts in their own studies. They 120hx180w Keynsham Voice AW.pdf should be extremely proud of their achievements.”

JOHN Cabot Academy was one of the best performers in the area at GCSE in 2015, with 71 per cent gaining at least five A*-C passes including English and maths. This provisional figure is four percentage points up on last year and wasa underpinned by excellent results in the core subjects. Eighty two per cent of students achieved a C or above in English and 78 per cent a C or above in maths, while the average pass rate across all science courses was 94 per cent. At John Cabot, as at other schools in the Cabot Learning Federation, including Bristol Brunel Academy and Bristol Metropolitan Academy, there were some tremendous individual successes for students at all levels. James Gibson, one of Bristol's youth mayors, achieved nine A* and one A; Kajetan Champlewski notched up 11 A & A* grades and Michalis Fragopulos and Anisha Kochar each scored 10 A & A*s. Interim Principal Kate Willis said, “We are delighted for all our students. They thoroughly deserve these excellent results as they have worked hard throughout their time at John Cabot. However they could not do it without the support of their parents, carers and staff ." At Bristol Brunel, 46 per cent of students achieved five or more A*-Cs including English and maths. The academy also performed exceptionally well in the best 8 value added measure, where its score of 1012 places it well above the national average. Principal Jon Jones said:“The students should feel proud of what they have achieved with us. These results are testament to their hard work and dedication. The national picture is showing that many schools have seen a decrease in performance measures due to the recent changes to the examination system. In the face of these challenges we are pleased to have held firm in all measures and improved considerably in others. “ Brunel is now consistently oversubscribed; this means that parents 21/08/2015 14:43 are selecting us as their educator of choice in the city and these results again reinforce parents' confidence in the academy.”

This Eastgate roundabout desperately needs looking at; it must be one of the worst traffic lane systems in Bristol. issues arising from the previous changes. I was surprised firstly to find that the issue of the curtailed 5, now terminating at Oldbury Court rather than continuing on to Downend had been ignored as I recall the residents of Downend were not at all happy about this. I also am very disappointed that Lodge Causeway has been overlooked, in fact the service instead of being improved has worsened so it is practically nonexistent. I myself live in Fishponds and know people who live off Lodge Causeway who for some time have found the service very poor, only the 6 to Bristol and the 81 to Kingswood and Fishponds. At one time they were served by the 587 and 584 which meant there was a half hourly service from Fishponds going to Kingswood via Lodge Causeway, also the 581 went up Lodge Causeway from Parkway station to Hanham. All these services no longer run and now the 81 is to be axed there is no replacement. The nearest bus stop it appears would be the 17 stop in Hillfields Avenue but as many of these people I know are elderly with mobility issues they would not be able to walk from there to their homes off Lodge Causeway. This is not acceptable as it means Fishponds would be out of bounds for these

people who may need to access essential services. The new 48A route to UWE Frenchay Campus is welcome but it duplicates the existing Wessex 13 route while if I want to get to Lodge Causeway there is no bus at all. Rosemary Doggett Fishponds

Demand drives Sunday trading WITH regard to Stephen Buston’s letter (Fishponds Voice, August 2015) - there are a number of factual errors in his piece. Firstly, it’s not refreshing to to see US sports personalities - or indeed politicians - praising God for their success. Given the plain and obvious lack of existence of any higher power, it’s just really weird and creepy. As Tim Minchin memorably puts it: “If anyone can show me one example in the entire history of the world of a single spiritual or religious person who has been able to show either empirically or logically the existence of a higher power with any consciousness or interest in the human race or ability to punish or reward humans for their moral choices or that there is any reason - other than fear - to believe in any version of an afterlife, I will give you my piano, one of my legs, and my wife”.

follow us on Twitter @fishpondsvoice

I would hold to this with the exception that I do not own a piano or consider my wife a possession. I think the thrust of his letter was to protest about the possible extension of Sunday trading. Of course the welfare of people working on Sundays needs to be taken into account - when Sunday trading was first allowed in England, legislation was put in place to ensure this was not compulsory; choosing to observe Sunday as a sabbath can not affect your employment. Different religions have different Sabbath days so enforcing Sunday as a ‘day of rest’ for the whole country - whatever religion (or not) they choose to follow is plainly unfair. The NYC photography shop he mentions does not show ‘just a blank screen with a clock’ on Saturdays - it allows you to search and query the entire site, but not check out. Consumer demand for opening on Sundays and even Christmas is what drives shops to open. If Britain was the observant Christian hegemony he’d like it to be, the populace would not shop on Sundays, and shops would not open. Robbie Allen

Food and ethics — a final word DEAR “A believing Muslim”, re your

29

letter to FV in June “Halal meat is important to all”. As much as I don’t want to start an argument or engage in theological debate about this, I don’t feel that your letter should be the last word on the topic of halal food in our community. Firstly, the title; “Halal is important to all”.. To all?? I don’t even need to state how incorrect this statement is, so I won’t. Secondly; there is a reason that the halal practice has been deemed cruel by the RSPCA; it IS cruel, animals should not be subject to this torture prior to entering the food-chain, just to pacify the few. Your religion is a choice - animal welfare is not a choice; it’s basic human ethics. You choose to be Muslim, you know that this then restricts your food choices (and many, many other free choices that secularists enjoy every day), and you have the audacity to imply that you have a RIGHT to inhumane animal slaughter?! It’s absurd. Stick to veg, or deal with humanely procured meat like the rest of us.You say we can’t expect Muslims to eat only veg - why not? Vegetarians do it ... Every day. Finally; I do love the irony of your parting shot; “Times have moved on”. clearly not if your life is being dictated by a 1,400 year old book... Modern atheist, Fishponds

S an MP I deal with all kinds of problems, from pensions to parks. One subject which I am contacted about practically more than any other though, is housing. Typically, I receive complaints from council tenants in overcrowded accommodation, who have been waiting months on end to be offered a new property. The council has a huge waiting list, making it impossible to meet demand. Those who aspire to own their own homes are also finding it hard. Recent figures show that east Bristol saw the sharpest increase in house prices between 2013 and 2014 in the whole city, with prices jumping up 12 per cent. Though this may be good news for settled home-owners, it makes it even more difficult for those who are trying to get onto the housing ladder. Rents in the private sector have also continued to soar. You may remember the petition launched earlier this year against the Bristol letting agent CJ Hole, after the company sent out a letter encouraging its landlords to raise their rents, despite the fact that many tenants were already struggling to pay. Lower Fishponds has some of the highest levels of private renting in Bristol, but over a quarter of these properties fail the Decent

Homes Standard. I welcome the council’s recent decision to extend its tougher regulatory scheme to Eastville, to drive up standards, but this will only be temporarily effective. Ultimately, the only way to resolve problems in the privaterented, social housing, and homeowning sectors is to dramatically increase the number of properties being built. I do, however, recognise problems with finding places to build these new homes. Some of you will have been involved with the Protect Frome Valley @ Stapleton campaign, which opposes plans to build homes near Eastville Park. Given the importance of this site to local residents, I have been a supporter of this campaign, and have recent lodged a formal objection to the planning application. This case is just one example of a wider tension between the wish to protect our green spaces and meet local housing need. There are not necessarily any easy answers to this problem, and in the future we may see more building on the green belts around cities. More immediately, though, brownfield land needs to be utilised, with proper action taken against landowners who are frustrating attempts for such building to take place. This must be the priority in providing for homes for the many people who need them.

Final bid to save Eastville library

When I grow up... pilot, fire fighter, train driver, police officer?

S EASTVILLE library is a lifeline for many people living between the M32 and Lockleaze, councillors were told this month. More than 50 people of all ages and backgrounds attended a “Save Our Library” demo on August 22 and more than 450 have signed a petition calling for it to stay open. But, as Fishponds Voice went to print, it was looking likely that Bristol City Council’s cabinet would agree a “rescue” plan to keep all 27 other libraries open but shut Eastville. The proposal was put forward by officers at the request of the Mayor, George Ferguson, after initial proposals to close a quarter of libraries to save £1.1 million caused an outcry. The alternative scheme involves reduced opening hours and is estimated to save £465,000. Lockleaze Councillor Gill Kirk said she found it hard to believe that the Mayor was on the point of saving all the other threatened libraries and closing the one in Eastville, one of the most deprived parts of the city. The library was the last remaining publicly accessible building in the neighbourhood, she said. “How can we be a thriving community if we have nowhere to meet?” she said. Councillor Kirk was due to make a statement to the cabinet

meeting calling for a rethink, and saying that residents felt “bereft and betrayed”. “This is a momentous thing to do and absolutely irreversible for the residents of Eastville,” it said. “If the library closes, that’s it, an end to a facility that has been used by this community for decades, where generations of children have learnt to love reading, where older people have come to choose their books, students have studied, people come to learn to use the computer, and access the internet when they have no computer of their own. “Hearing residents’ feelings about the potential loss of their library has helped me understand better what ‘community’ means: having a safe welcoming place nearby you can walk to, where you know people and they know you, somewhere that has been part of your life for decades, somewhere to rely on in a changing world.” Councillor Kirk said the proposal for an alternative provision on the Lockleaze estate would not help many of the current Eastville library users. She pointed out that it was not the least well-used of Bristol’s libraries. “I feel Eastville residents are being unfairly singled out and ours will be the only community without a library within walking distance, and without a community hub,” she said.

O the summer holidays are drawing to a close and a new school year starts! For lots of us parents they involved whisking our children around to various activities. Or for others, it might have meant going to watch the new film Inside Out In it a young girl Riley is uprooted from her Midwest life and moved to San Francisco. And she encounters various emotions - joy, fear, anger, disgust and Sadness - conflict on how best to navigate a new city, house, and school. The film was fantastic, but it got me thinking. We use our eyes to get around. We use our eyes to do our jobs, go to school, play sport, watch tv the list goes on! Maybe your child has said they want to be a pilot, fire fighter, train driver, police officer? Every child dreams of what they’ll do one day. But up to one in five children may have an eye condition they do not know about which could stop them achieving those dreams. Street party will mark church’s 125th anniversary THE COUNTDOWN has begun to a special street party which will mark the 120th anniversary of Crofts End Church. This Saturday (September 5) will see Crofts End Road transformed when friends and families come together to enjoy an afternoon and evening of entertainment and fun. The free event will include a bouncy castle, games, face-painting, children’s entertainer and a big screen showing of family movie Shaun the Sheep. And for the older folks, the Crofts End Mission band will perform at 4pm. Festivities will continue until 10pm with live music from Downend-based Canon Fodder, a barn dance and hog roast. There will also be an exhibition running from 2-8pm which will chronicle the history of the church which has been put together by historian Alan Freake, whose grandfather George Brown started the church in 1895. Lynn Davies, member of the church leadership team, said the road would be closed for the occasion: “Crofts End has been at the heart of this community in St George for 120 years and we want

to celebrate that. “We had a celebration of the church in June on the actual anniversary but now, in September, we want to share that celebration with the community. “We’re hoping for a good response from the community. Leaflets have gone out to local houses and we have new residents from the new development across the road who want to get involved so we’re hoping for a good turn out on the day.” Pastor Andrew Yelland said: “The street party is really important to us because it goes back to celebrate how the church was founded on the streets of St George. We want to celebrate and share all the good things with the community because this church has been a part of it for so long.” The street party will also give residents the chance to find out about the church’s plans to create a community hub. Church leaders say the local population is expanding rapidly yet there are no community facilities. The plans include a building which will incorporate a new church on the first floor and coffee house and community space on the ground

This is an edited extract of an article written by historian and curator of Frenchay Village Museum, Alan Freke, the grandson of George Brown, a young miner who established Crofts End Church 120 years ago. GEORGE Alfred Brown had a remarkable life – he came from a poor family, becoming a pit boy in a coal mine at the age of 11, but when he died he was described as “one of Bristol’s best loved citizens”. He was born on April 2, 1875 in Tunley, near Radstock. His father was a coal miner in the nearby Camerton Colliery, and when George was 11 years old he joined his father in the mine as a pit boy. When he was 14 there was a lockout at Camerton Colliery, so George with his father and brother walked to Bristol to find work. They found it at Deep Pit Colliery in Speedwell. The family were practising Christians, attending Withyditch Baptist when they lived in Tunley, but when they came to Bristol and settled in Mayfield Park South they attended Morley Congregational Church in Lodge Causeway. It was at a service in Morley on March 16, 1893 that he was moved to commit his life to Christian ministry – he was just 17. He and his friends began

skills with an accordion. But his life was changed forever one Sunday when he met a group of barefooted children, who were playing in the street at the top of Whitehall Road. He asked them why they weren’t at Sunday school, and they said they weren’t allowed in, as they had no shoes! He told them if they came to the same place next Sunday he would provide a Sunday school for children with or without shoes! The following Sunday, June 16, 1895, he and his friends rented a room for a shilling (5p) in Freestone Rank, Whitehall Road, for the Sunday School – and more than 70 children turned up! It wasn’t long before there were so many that five rooms were needed. By 1906 there was a falling off in attendance of the older boys, and George thought that something needed to be done to keep their interest, and he suggested starting a brass band. The band was to play a pivotal role in the life of the Mission. As Sunday school numbers grew it was obvious that proper premises were needed. In 1908 Fussell’s brickworks in Crofts End Road gave some land and materials, and the miners built their Mission hall in just three months – all in their spare time. The local MP Charles

35

Hobhouse opened the Mission on July 11,1908. The Mission kept many miners and their families alive during the long miners’ strike of 1911, the band raising nearly £2,000 for the relief fund. Later it was a source of help for locals hit by the unemployment crisis of the 1930s. In 1929 it was decided to ask the Bristol City Mission Society to take over long-term responsibility for the Mission, which they did in October of that year. George was then appointed their missionary. George died in February 1949 at the age of 73. The Lord Mayor of Bristol, Alderman Charles Gill, wrote in a letter of sympathy to Blanche his widow. The Lord Mayor also gave the eulogy at his funeral, which was held at Crofts End on February 26, before he was laid to rest in Avon View Cemetery. You can find out more about George Brown in a new book by Alan Freake called From Miner to Missionary, which is being sold for £5 by Crofts End Church in aid of the new building fund. For details ring 0117 951 3520 or email office@croftsend.org. Alternatively call into George’s Coffee House at the church Wednesday-Friday from 11am-2pm.

St John’s Guides and Scouts celebrate centenary GUIDES and Scouts from St John’s Church in Lodge Causeway have celebrated a very special anniversary. The 18th St John’s Guides and the 66th St John’s Scouts have been meeting in the church hall since 1915. To mark the occasion they held a weekend of festivities which kicked off with a barbecue for current members of the Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Guides and their

families. On the evening a reunion event took place for former Guides and Scouts. The atmosphere of the old days was captured by a slide presentation of nostalgic photographs. A buffet and wine helped the evening go with a swing. Guide leader Carrie Britton oversaw the planning of the celebrations with group Scout leader Carol Gollop. Carrie, 36, who was a Brownie

We had 20 to 30 families turn up to the barbecue and lots of people who were Guides and Scouts in the late 80s and early 90s were at the reunion. We also had lots of people who had attended back in the 1950s and many of them hadn’t set foot in the hall since their Guiding and Scouting days. “It was really nice to have a good catch up. “I’d like to say a huge thank you

to all the leaders past and present and everyone who supported to these events.” The events were paid for by fundraising initiatives earlier in the year including a car wash and a St George’s Day bangers and mash lunch for members of the community. The unit is hoping to start a Rainbow unit for girls aged five to seven on Monday evenings from 6-7pm during term time. To register interest please email carrie.l.price@ googlemail.com

Jelf cyclists raise over £20,000 for St Peter’s Hospice in memory of Emma MORE than £20,000 has been raised for St Peter’s Hospice in memory of a Fishponds woman. Emma Wygladala, who worked as a business support manager at the Jelf Group, died last year, 10 months after being diagnosed with a rare sarcoma of the womb. Some of her colleagues at the Chipping Sodbury headquarters of Jelf, a financial services company, took part in a two-day, 150-mile bike ride and other fundraising initiatives for the hospice charity,

which cared for Emma in her final weeks. Jelf’s chief executive, Alex Alway, said: “The event was an excellent opportunity to bring everyone together in memory of our colleague Emma and raise essential funds for the hospice. “Each year the Jelf staff rise to a challenge, and this was by no means an easy one, but one that was immensely rewarding, in being able to support such a deserving local charity.”

As Bristol’s only adult hospice, St Peter’s Hospice cares for more than 2,670 patients each year as well as supporting family members. All services are provided free of charge but this care costs about £18,000 a day, most of which has to come from gifts in wills, donations and funds generated by the hospice shops. Edd Smith, corporate fundraiser at St Peter’s Hospice said: “It is great that Jelf have been supporting the hospice again this year in memory of Emma. “The support shown by the team has been fantastic and will allow us to continue caring for those with life-limiting illnesses and their families in Bristol.” For more information about St Peter’s Hospice visit www. stpetershospice.org.uk Emma pictured right

around the field.” A man called Augustine made a comment 1,500 years ago which offers an insightful answer into why Jonny (and all of us) live with a constant vague feeling of unfulfilment. He wrote, “Oh God, you have made us for yourself and our hearts are restless until they find their rest in you.” What he meant was that, whether we know it or not, we all have a God-shaped hole inside of us that nothing else fits or satisfies perfectly. The church I’m part of, Grace Church, is a diverse group of very ordinary people who have been transformed by one extraordinary, life-changing discovery. We don’t propose to have it all together, but we do believe we’ve found something that makes sense of the world we live in, something that is true, something that provides solid answers to life’s big questions, something that truly satisfies, something that is real, something that brings genuine hope. That something is a someone. Jesus Christ. Each year there are new people coming to see if what we enjoy is real. This September, as you contemplate new beginnings, a new school year, a new season, and perhaps ponder life and the future, why not come and check out the good news about Jesus for yourself? What have you got to lose?

life would be ruined. This is why we go looking for a buzz elsewhere. But in a world where there is so much that is good, there always seems to be something bad that messes everything up: good relationships turn sour, holidays comes to an end and you’ve got to go back to work, the company makes you redundant, the new car gets a scratch, they turn your old local pub into a fancy new wine/tapas bar! Way back in 2003, with the Rugby World Cup Final deep into extra time, Jonny Wilkinson kicked a drop goal in the final minute to seal England’s win against Australia. Reflecting on that victory he later wrote, “Where do you go when you are 24 years old and you have already got what you wanted from life? That night in Sydney I was searching for the Hollywood film ending to my story and, in a way, I got it.You probably know what happened: the close game, extra time, my dropped goal and a 20-17 England victory. I remember how I would have done almost anything for the right result before the game. I recall making imaginary pacts inside my head in the changing room before the kick-off. The answer to all my dreams was a mere 80 minutes away and, at the time, it meant more than life itself for me to secure it. The problem was that, in the real world, life goes on after the credits roll. The buzz doesn’t last for ever… before I knew it, I was back in the mundane. I sat in the same changing room in Sydney after the epic battle until pretty much everyone had left. I didn’t want to wave goodbye because I didn’t want to let go of the moment and give in to its inevitable passing. I had already begun to feel the elation slipping away during the lap of honour

Thinking about life and the future IT’S September. New school year. New football season. The Great British Bake Off is back on TV! It’s a time for new beginnings. A time to think about life and the future. Have you got questions? Everyone has questions. Why are we here on earth? Are we alone in the universe? What’s the meaning of life? What happens when we die? But where do we go for answers? Are you searching for something? Everyone is searching for something. Happiness? Security? Assurance? Love? But what this world offers seems so fragile and shallow. So where do we find something that truly satisfies? Are you looking for something? Everyone is looking for something. Some are looking for a sale bargain or a new job. Some are looking for “Mr or Mrs Right”. Others are looking at the world around us — looking for truth, reality, hope. But are we looking in the right place? There was this carpenter from Nazareth who turned out to be something of a worldwide megastar who spoke some shocking words that many people found utterly scandalous. He said, “I have come that you might have life and that you might have it to the full!” That sounds great, but let’s be honest, for most of us that’s the exact opposite of what we would expect if we were to have anything to do with Jesus. To most of us the words “Jesus” and “life” don’t go together. We have the idea that Jesus (and his followers) seem to be against anything and everything that is fun, enjoyable, exciting, sidesplitting and fattening! Many have come to the conclusion that if they were really to get into “church” and “Jesus”, far from living life to the full,

Red’s all the rage as George joins Riff Raff

BRISTOL’S Mayor George Ferguson joined in when singers from Fishponds performed in Bristol’s Old City. Members of the Riff Raff choir earned an encore from the crowds on Corn Street after singing a range of tunes including Somebody to Love by Queen and La Isla Bonita by Madonna. The Mayor, who always wears red trousers, fitted in well with the choir, whose signature colour is red. Riff Raff’s performance raised money for the Nepali Children’s Trust to support those affected by the recent earthquake. The choir will next be appearing during the song raids as part of October’s Festival of Song in Bristol and is putting together an exciting programme for its concert at the Colston Hall in July next year.

because of the influence those people exert. “ One highlight was acquiring a large number of children at the end of a walk along the cycle track who all drew bicycles for us and were very clear why green issues were important. “It is so that the penguins have somewhere to live.” they explained. Another memorable moment was at a Sunday afternoon workshop at The Haven at Clay Bottom allotments where participants were making monoprints inside the yurt that is set up there for creative purposes. Most of the stencils being made were of plants which grow on the land there but one lady produced a beautiful little palm tree, saying: “This tent makes me think how much I miss the desert.” . During a thunderstorm at

Fishponds park, one would-be workshop participant invited the artists back to his house for coffee and narrated his experiences of family life in Fishponds. “The landlord of the Queen’s Head used to have bee hives on the roof and sell his honey in the bar.” Karen said: “That sort of generosity, both with time and personal memories, is what makes a project like this so valuable. The snippets and stories which we are gathering are personal and specific to the area and the affection for and loyalty to this area are inspiring. “At the beginning of the project people were very anxious to make us understand that this was one of the most well-appointed green space areas in the city; now we believe them.” An open workshop will take place at Elm Tree Farm

FASCINATING stories and creative artwork showing people’s affection for Greater Fishponds have emerged from the area’s Green Capital Arts Programme – and it’s not over yet. Visual artist Barbara Disney and poet Karen Hayes have been exploring the neighbourhood with local people and holding a series of workshops More are planned for this month with aim of making sure as many community members as possible can contribute to the creation of a large “Domesday-style Book” mapping the area and to making a series of enamel artworks to be installed at key points. The project is entitled Where Two Roads Meet and one of its aims is to help Eastville ward become better linked to the rest of the neighbourhood. There’s also a strong theme of re-use and recycling, which has been enthusiastically embraced by local school children. Karen and Barbara have held organised walks in various parts of the area – several of them on some of the wettest days of the summer. “The walks have been rather underpopulated due to weather but the workshops themselves have

Swimming sensation has sights set firmly on 2020 Olympics HE started off in the learner pool at Soundwell pool but just look at Will Cole now. The 16-year-old swimming sensation has his sights firmly set on the 2020 Olympics after a string of successes in the pool. Will has just finished racing in this year’s British Summer Nationals where he won two bronze medals and a silver medal. But it was the coveted gold he won in the 100m freestyle category which has given him a British

Champion title and the taste of future stardom. Will, who sat his GCSEs this year, started his swimming career as a pre-school tot when he took lessons at Soundwell pool, now known as Kingswood Leisure Centre. Will’s potential was spotted by his teacher, World Masters’ swimmer Carol Fellows, who asked a coach at the leisure centre-based Soundwell Swimming Club to take a look at him. The coach, John Britton, immediately saw Will had something special and suggested to Will’s mum that the club could bring out his true potential. After joining the club at the age of eight, Will has worked his way steadily through the club’s squad structure, competing and becoming a formidable swimmer in the South West region. His achievements include becoming a South

Gloucestershire primary schools event winner and record holder, a Gloucester County champion and record holder and a Western County champion and junior record holder. Will first qualified for the National Swimming Championships in 2013, picking up a bronze and a silver medal. He was selected to represent England Youth in Italy earlier this year and came home with two bronze medals and a silver.

Potential Because of his potential as a future Olympian, Will now trains at the high performance pool at Hengrove Leisure Centre where his skills are being honed for future glory. Will, who lives in Oldland Common with mum Laura, dad Ron and his 19-year-old sister Jennie, said it has been a wrench leaving the only pool and club he’s ever known. “I’ve only ever been at one pool and it’s quite sad that I’ve had to

leave but it’s a sacrifice I have to make to move ahead. Swimming becomes your social life and I’ve had eight years to get to know everyone at Soundwell and I’m really close to them. You go through all the pain and hard work together.” His latest medal haul at the summer nationals has provided the boost Will needed after a difficult period juggling training with GCSE revision at Sir Bernard Lovell School in Oldland Common. “I’ve had a tough last couple of seasons due to school work but having British Champion at the end of all of my GCSEs lifted me quite a

bit and has given me confidence. “I’m on the England Talent Programme and for the past year they have been monitoring me. If I’m selected for the squad for the 2020 Olympics it wouldn’t be until the April of 2020. They pick you really close to the Games in case you lose your fitness. “I want it really badly but it can be quite daunting to think ahead to five years in the future and how many hours a week you have to train to get there. I try to take each day as it comes and try to put the best I can into the day.” This month Will will start at St Brendan’s Sixth Form College where he will study A-levels in law, maths, accounting and psychology.

“He’s got the potential to go all the way - he’s just got to want it enough. It’s a lot of commitment not just from Will but also from his family and coaches. We’re all behind him and support him and hope he will go as far as he can.” Club chairman Julian Lewis said: “Will has proved himself to be an exceptional swimmer, talented on all four strokes. “He continues to pursue his dreams to become an Olympian with tremendous support and encouragement from everyone in the swimming community at Soundwell. “Will has now outgrown the training hours and size of pool on offer at Kingswood and has moved to train at Hengrove Leisure Centre with the City of Bristol Performance Pathway. The coaches and committee at Soundwell Swimming Club have encouraged and fully supported his move to this high performance centre. “Will still remains a valued member of Soundwell Swimming Club. He is a fantastic role model and inspiration for all the budding young swimmers who aim to follow in his footsteps. “We are extremely proud of Will and all his achievements and know he has the ability to go all the way.”

Talented At the moment he trains eight times a week but when his new season starts he will be upping the ante to 10 two-hour sessions, including four early morning ones. Due to training commitments Will has limited spare time but manages to fit in working on a casual basis as a lifeguard at Kingswood Leisure Centre and playing computer games. Laura said: “We’re just really proud of him and hope he can keep it up.

Book Review from Fishponds Library

Flood of Fire by Amitav Ghosh

T

HIS is the last book in a trilogy by Amitav Ghosh and chronicles the build up to the Chinese Opium Wars in the 1840s and the actual fighting which took place on the Chinese mainland, caused by the Chinese authorities attempting to stop the import of opium from India into China. The story is told through four characters, the first is Shireen, a Parsi widow of an Indian opium merchant who died in China, who leaves her Bombay home to sail to China in an attempt to retrieve the moneys confiscated by China and to meet her husband’s son who is an opium addict and is an escaped convict. Kesri is a high ranking sepoy with the East India Company army who was born into a poor rural community in India but has risen through the Sepoy ranks, however, is still looked down upon by the English soldiers. He describes the sea journey to China and some of the fierce fighting that followed. Another important character in Flood of Fire is Neel, an Indian nobleman who has fallen upon hard times. Unknown to him, his son has come over to China to find him and is a fife player in the invasion force. Lastly, Zacheray is an American sailor who is seeking money and love is an integral part of the plot and during the story makes a lot of money selling opium during the conflict. It is an excellent read and brings to life that historical period. The reader is made aware of the tensions which existed in the East Indian Company army during that period. Flood of Fire is a difficult novel to put down and although it is the final part of a trilogy one hopes that the author, Amitav Ghosh has a follow up novel detailing what happens afterwards. Cook up a storm

PEOPLE in Fishponds are being urged to cook up a storm in October and raise money to support unpaid carers in Bristol and South Gloucestershire. Carers Support Centre. based at the Vassall Centre, is encouraging locals to take part in the Britain’s Best Breakfast event, a national fundraising campaign hosted by Carers Trust. There are around 67,000 unpaid carers in Bristol and South Gloucestershire alone. Three in five of us will become a carer at some point in our lives. Most of us will know a carer. This year all funds raised for Carers Support Centre will be used to help provide services for our young adult carers. Jo Holborn,Young Carers Services Manager said: “Young adult carers often slip through the net of services. We have recently been successful in securing a grant through Carers Trust’s Time for Change programme to fund a dedicated support and development worker for Young Adult Carers. Any money raised for Carers Support Centre through Britain’s Best Breakfast will help us reach even more young adults who often miss out on educational, work and social opportunities because of their caring role.” People who are interested in hosting a breakfast can contact Carers Support Centre for a pack email breakfast@carerssupportcentre.org.uk, call 0117 958 9988 or visit our website www.carerssupportcentre.org.uk
