Doris, 100, Skypes her twin on their birthday DORIS Hazell knew she was not the only one to receive 100th birthday congratulations from the Queen on the 12th of the 12th 2017 - her brother Harry Hall made it to the milestone date too! Doris, who lives with her daughter Pauline in Stapleton, is originally from the Midlands, where Harry still lives, and the pair were in touch via Skype on the big day to exchange greetings. The twins were the youngest of seven children and were split up because their mother could not cope. Harry and his brother Arthur went to a boys' school, while Doris went into a church-run children's home until she was 16, when she went into service. She met her husband Ern and they moved to his home town of Bristol after the war and went on to have two sons, Stephen and Andrew, as well as Pauline. Doris worked as a cleaner at hospitals including Manor Farm and Frenchay. She celebrated with a big family party, which included her two grandsons Scott and Jordan and great grandson Lennie and a party on the day with friends at Greenfinch Lodge.

Cabinet role What can we do to help? Inspiring way to start 2018 for Anna AFTER the indulgences of Christmas, many people want to do something useful in the new year and for those living in Fishponds, it's no exception. People from the area are getting together with leading initiatives across Bristol as well as MP Kerry McCarthy to find out how to help those in need in Bristol, whether it’s volunteering at a foodbank, helping out at children’s clubs in the holidays, gardening or fundraising. Organised by the People’s University of Fishponds (PUF), people can find out about what’s going on and how they can help at an event on Sunday January 28, at the Old Library, Fishponds Road, from 7-9pm. The ‘University’, which used to meet at the Kingfisher Cafe, has invited Bristol East MP Kerry to speak along with Andy Street,
CEO of Fareshare and chair of Feeding Bristol; Darren Gillett from Fit & Fed, which helps school children at risk of hunger in the holidays; Sara Venn from Incredible Edible; Anna Keen, Hillfields councillor and cabinet member for education; Richard Pollard, Fishponds Foodbank co-ordinator, and Alison Findlay, co-founder of Poverty is Pants. PUF organiser Kate Brooks said: "The idea of the event is for us to find out a bit more about these initiatives. "We all read shocking statistics in the papers, like the recent newspaper article that the number of homeless families in Bristol is now twice the national average, but we don’t always know what to do, who to contact or how best to help. So the idea behind this event is to hear from inspiring various groups and
projects, and maybe share some ideas - lets start 2018 by making a difference if we can." Organisers plan to have live music and fresh food at the event, so people can gather and chat. Visitors can even bring any left over non-perishable food items from the festive season and donate them to the foodbank. There is pressure to sign up to any initiatives, guests are welcome to just come along to find out more. HILLFIELDS Councillor Anna Keen has been made Bristol's cabinet councillor for education. It follows Mayor Marvin Rees's decision to end crossparty rule by dropping the two non-Labour members, Tory Claire Hiscott and the Green Party's Fi Hance. Councillor Keen, a teacher, joins two other Fishponds cabinet members, Craig Cheney, who is deputy mayor with responsibility for finance, and Mhairi Threlfall, who recently took on the transport brief. She said: "I want to work with schools so that the children of Bristol can flourish in an environment of equality and inclusion. I can promise parents, children, teachers, and all others in the education and skills sector that I will listen." Cllr Keen will continue to lead on the Feeding Bristol project.

Santa on the Lake proves a splash hit
THE inaugural Santa's Grotto in the Lake has proved a huge success, attracting visitors old and young alike. The magical setting - by the side of the lake at Eastville Park - proved irresistible and more than 500 children came along for a glimpse of Santa. Visitors were entertained by music, story-telling, jugglers, poets and mime acts and kept warm by helpings of delicious hot soup. The event was a joint venture between the Friends of Eastville Park and Frome Fairies to raise funds to improve and update the children's playground in the park. It was also used to gauge what support there would be for regular events in the park to encourage more families to make use of the open space. Andrew Gee, one of the organisers, said the sheer
number of visitors in spite of the wet weather made it clear there was support for more events in the park. "We know now, that with a little imagination, we will be able to attract visitors throughout the year with regular events that appeal to and benefit young and old - and everyone in between. "At this time of the year people’s time is precious, which makes the contributions of our volunteers that much more special. "Bringing smiles to the faces of over five hundred children on a day when the weather wasn’t that kind is a remarkable achievement and we would like to thank each and every helper for the part they played in making it into the amazing experience it turned out to be. "This day was not just about

Get ready for the longer days RESIDENTS are being reminded to act now in order to arrange Playing Out sessions on their street in time for spring 2018. The scheme, which started in Bristol, aims to improve children's well being and build friendlier and stronger communities by organising road closures that allow children to play in the street. Bristol City Council requires at least six weeks' notice in order to process a Temporary Play Street Order and so residents are being asked to think two months ahead. Bristol Playing Out activator Jo Chesterman said: "Lots of streets start thinking about Playing Out as the weather starts to pick up, but then get frustrated by the wait. "Using the dark nights of winter to meet with neighbours and get decisions made - when, how often and who will steward - is a great use of this time of year. It also gives people something to look forward to once the festive season has passed." Playing Out has been growing around Bristol since 2011 and has gone nationwide, even attracting interest from around the world. Jo said: "There is an obesity crisis amongchildren and lots of social isolation - Playing Out sessions can benefit all the residents in a street, not just the children. It's free to apply and highway approved cones/signs are provided by Playing Out. A few hours of effort can bring lasting change to the street and community." She was joined by guests
including Debbie Coker, principal of Fishponds Church of England Academy, Bristol Poet Laureate Miles Chambers, and Ujima presenter Lana Mareno. Life Universecity 2017 Prestigious Outstanding Leadership Award went to John Hirst, executive director of Destination Bristol, in recognition of his excellent service in Bristol since 1997.

Unique 'Buy a Brick' offer in Hillfields STAFF at Minerva Primary Academy have launched a unique fundraising drive where locals are being given the chance to get their hands on their own piece of Hillfields history. The school, in The Greenway, is being demolished and replaced by a modern building. Although its buildings are now outdated, the school, which was formerly Hillfields Primary School, has earned a special place in the hearts of many local residents who went there themselves and now their children attend. Jess Crossley, the academy's parent support worker, said the demolition work presented an ideal opportunity to help support pupils. "As the old building is slowly demolished, we have kept some of the original bricks as mementos of the old school, which I'm sure holds many memories for a lot of the community. "We are selling these bricks, polished and decorated with a plaque, for £5 each. Local residents who have a current connection with the school have been eager to buy themselves
one of these keepsakes, but we are aware that there may be other neighbours who do not know about this project." The new two-storey development will feature a nursery, reception classrooms, infant classrooms, junior classrooms, offices, staff facilities, a main hall, studio and kitchen as well as new landscaping. The project is to be completed using modern methods of off-site construction which will enable building work to be finished in a much quicker time-scale. The new building is scheduled for completion in November 2018 and the official opening is programmed for July 2019. Once completed, the current capacity of 300 pupils will increase to 420. During demolition and construction, pupils have been located in part of the school, with additional learning space provided using a temporary Elliott classroom. Such a stylish production of Hairspray! STUDENTS at Bristol Metropolitan Academy presented their version of the American hit musical Hairspray to great acclaim. The show is set in 1960s Baltimore, where the danceloving teen Tracy Turnblad becomes an overnight celebrity, a trendsetter in dance, fun and fashion. Her new status as a teen sensation helps bring racial integration to “The Corny Collins Show”. Bristol Met students and staff spent a year preparing for the production, with weekly rehearsals, including giving up time in the holidays. There were 60 students in the cast and more than 25 supporting crew members from Years 7 to 11. The show involved the music department, external artists, staff, parents and volunteers from the community, who helped create costumes and build sets.

Salvation Army on Police arrest two course to distribute over car-key raid 500 festive treats
STAPLE Hill Salvation Army is on course to hit a new record for the distribution of food hampers and toys for families who are in difficult circumstances this Christmas. Working in partnership with South Gloucestershire social services and other agencies, the Salvation Army looks set to help more than 500 children with gifts of food hampers and toys this year. Major Colin Hylton-Jones who, with his wife Nicola, is in charge of Staple Hill Church, said that public support this year has been overwhelming "People have really got behind the appeal and we have received some fantastic support from rugby clubs, corporate organisations, slimming clubs, other churches, students on university courses, and of course, members of the public who quietly drop in to our church laden with bags full of new toys. "The Salvation Army Band has been carol playing at various centres including Tesco Yate and the Mall Cribbs Causeway, and the generosity of the listeners has enabled us to purchase a significant amount of food which will make a real difference to the enjoyment of Christmas for many families and older people in need." The Salvation Army at Staple Hill will be open on Christmas Day and will entertain about 65 people who would otherwise be alone. Major Hylton-Jones said: "I would like to thank everyone who has helped us this year. Because of the kindness of so many, it has been possible for us to improve the Christmas for hundreds of people in need in South Gloucestershire during this festive season."

TWO men were arrested in connection with a burglary in Speedwell in which a car, laptop and games console were stolen. It happened between midnight and 11am on Sunday December 10 at a house near the City of Bristol College Soundwell Centre. Thieves forced the back door while the householders slept, stealing the car keys in order to take the vehicle. Officers have carried out house to house enquiries and Neighbourhood Watch members have been alerted. The suspects were arrested in Staple Hill at about 10pm on Tuesday December 12. One was arrested on suspicion of the burglary and the other on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle. Officers recovered the stolen car from Staple Hill. Temporary Neighbourhood Inspector Steve Davey said: "Neighbourhood PC Wayne Hick and I recently attended a community meeting to discuss residents’ concerns about burglary. We answered people’s questions and offered crime prevention advice. At the meeting I said we were carrying out patrols of burglary hotspots and gathering intelligence in order to target suspects. The Volunteer Police Cadets have also been patrolling the area knocking on doors to raise awareness of the issue. I hope the community is reassured by the action we’re taking." If you see anyone acting suspiciously around a neighbour’s property, call the police straight away. It’s 999 if a crime is in progress, otherwise ring 101.

New Year appeal for charity shop A CHARITY that helps children with cancer is launching a New Year appeal for donations after arsonists struck at its Fishponds branch. CLIC Sargent, in Straits Parade, has lost nearly £40,000 of income following the arson attack and burglary on November 12. The shop, which has been open since November 1989, was forced to close following the blaze, leading to the huge loss of income. Although the branch will reopen, charity bosses say as yet they are unable to give a date. The appeal - which asks people to donate £5 - coincides with police releasing CCTV footage of a man they believe can help with their enquiries. The fire has proved a major blow for the charity which last year supported 619 families in the South West. The money equates to nearly half of the money the charity gave out in grants last year. Jason Webster, head of trading at CLIC Sargent, said: "We rely entirely on donations to fund our vital work and so it’s been devastating for us and our amazing volunteers to see this happen right before Christmas.

Stoke Lane reopens but traffic woes are not over TRAFFIC flows are set to improve in the Fishponds area this month now that Stoke Lane is once again open in both directions. The road between Stapleton and UWE Bristol was made one-way last year for work on the £216 million MetroBus rapid transport route. It was initially shut to northbound drivers but because of the jams - which had been predicted by local people - this was eventually reversed. It's now two-way again, although there will be "occasional short length, short term traffic lights for specific pieces of work". MetroBus, which is intended to reduce congestion and cut journey times into central Bristol, is due to start in the autumn. But first there is the little matter of repairs to the viaduct on the ring road at Bromley Heath, which are likely to take up to a year and are forecast to cause delays and jams of up to three miles.

Affordable homes victory DEVELOPERS have been given a year to get started on the long-awaited redevelopment of the Blackberry Hill Hospital site in Fishponds with hundreds of homes. And campaigners have warned that they will be keeping a close eye on the project to make sure the promised 100
"affordable" homes are delivered to help tackle the housing crisis. The developers, Galliford Try, sparked controversy last year when they said it was not viable to include homes for rent and shared ownership. But after talks brokered by Councillor Nicola Bowden-Jones and MP Kerry McCarthy a deal
was struck in which the council would fund 80 affordable homes and the developer 20. This was followed by the council granting planning permission for 346 homes, with the old hospital buildings converted into 129 flats and another 217 houses and flats built in the grounds.

THE hundreds of Fishponds students who picked up their A-level and GCSE results in recent weeks were the first to sit new, more demanding exams. A-levels are now judged by an exam at the end of two years, with AS-levels no longer counting towards the final mark. GCSEs in English language, English literature and maths have been reformed and are now graded from 9 (highest) to 1 and the curriculum is tougher. All other subjects are still graded A*G in 2017. Across the city, 58 per cent of young people achieved a pass in both English and maths GCSEs. At Bristol Metropolitan Academy it was a record 56 per cent. Marvin Rees, Mayor of Bristol, said: “Well done to all of our young people who took their GCSEs this year, as well as the families, carers, teachers and governors who have been instrumental in these results. A huge amount of hard work goes into these exams and with tougher curriculum and number grades introduced this year our pupils have had to overcome many new challenges to succeed." Getting there ... slowly DRIVERS heading into Bristol on the M32 will need to watch their speed from this month. The new bus lane from Eastville to Newfoundland Street opened on October 30 as part of the £230m MetroBus project. It will mean narrower lanes on that stretch of road, so for safety reasons police, local authorities and Highways England have agreed that 40mph speed limits will be enforced. Avon & Somerset criminal justice road safety manager Sharon Kostanjsek said: “Speeding can have fatal consequences. It endangers the lives of other road users. “We don’t want to catch people speeding - we want people to obey the speed limits. The new bus lane will form part of the MetroBus routes between Cribbs Causeway and Hengrove; and between Emersons Green and the city centre. Both are due to start next year and to improve journey times.The bus lane can be used by buses, coaches, taxis, motorcycles and emergency vehicles, freeing up more space on the two lanes for general traffic.

Motorcyclist cut free after being trapped under van
A CRASH in Fishponds Road close to the site of the planned McDonald's drive-through has provoked new safety concerns. It happened on August 31, when a motorcyclist became trapped under a van after a collision and had to be cut free by firefighters. The rider, a man in his 20s, was taken to hospital with leg and shoulder injuries. Members of the campaign group, Say No to McDonald's in Fishponds, have always argued that the road is busy and dangerous and that the development of the fast-food restaurant - approved at a public inquiry earlier this year - will add to the risks. Some members have asked for additional conditions to be placed on demolition of the old tile warehouse at the site to ensure that debris does not add to the road dangers. McDonald's concerns: Page 3

Tackling homelessness in 2018 MERRY Christmas and a Happy New Year to you all! I’d like to wish everyone in the city the best of luck for the year ahead and hope you are looking forward to the challenges and accomplishments that it might hold as much as I am. Whilst many people will be out celebrating this festive season it’s important we spare some time to remember those who are less fortunate than ourselves. This year we are seeing a rise in homelessness rates across the country and whilst we are working towards our long term goal of being able to deliver 800 affordable homes a year by 2020, we also have to consider a range of solutions to solve the immediate problems vulnerable people are facing during these cold winter months. I am proud to say that Bristol will again be ensuring that 100 extra beds are available for people sleeping rough in the city when the cold weather hits Bristol the city as part of the Severe Weather Emergency Protocol. The Bristol Churches Winter Night Shelter project, which was started as part of the work carried out by the City Office, is back again for an extended run and is due to open for three months from Friday 5 January.
I am really grateful to the 12 churches that have once again answered the call from the City Office and will be opening their doors in people’s time of need. When I visited the project last year I was overwhelmed by the positivity and dedication of everyone involved and it is great to see it continued and expanded this year. We are also continuing to work with other organisations across the city to make sure we can address our severe homelessness problem as quickly as possible and get help out to those who need it most. Our city’s night shelters are run by some great organisations who work throughout the year to make sure the homeless in our city have a support network to rely on. These groups have now come together to make one appeal called Safer Off the Streets (#SOSBristol) which can help people to fund the great work that our night shelters do. For just £17, you could fund a new bed for the night for someone who really needs it. However, it is important to remember that these night shelters are free for the people who use them. n LETTERS Lycra Lads and Lassies on loose I HAVE been a cyclist for 60 years, half of them spent using the Bristol to Bath Railway Path, but that has become an increasingly dangerous route over recent years. Indeed I know cyclists who have stopped using it for that reason. And it’s all because of a certain type of cyclist, whom I dub the Lycra Lads and Lassies. They know who they are. They seem to think it is their own personal speedway. They show little concern for others who use what is, after all, a space shared with pedestrians - hence the term 'path’. Few have ever thought of using a bell or horn to warn people they are about to overtake. Many see no danger in overtaking another cyclist who is passing pedestrian. Or being plugged into phones or playlists as they zoom along, oblivious to those around them. During the morning rush hours
there are children going school, shoppers, pensioners, joggers and dog-walkers using it too. Oh but they do love their flashy lights. Some even have two intense beams on handlebars and helmets, pointing straight ahead. Cycle lamps are supposed to light up the road ahead not dazzle anyone travelling in the opposite direction. You can be seen just as well with a dipped headlight, and you are less of a menace. It is crazy that there have had to be police patrols to warn people about speeding on the cycle track. If people, are rushing because they are late for work - get up ten minutes earlier and take it easy. My hope for 2018 is that the Lycra Lads and Lassies will show a bit of consideration, and make the cycle path a pleasanter and safer place for all of us. Little Boy Blue is ready for action WITH the halls decked and the turkey basting, the last thing you might want to think of is a visit from the most Wickedest Witch of the West, Halloweena. But the panto character is gearing up to appear in the next offering from St Stephen's Drama Group in Soundwell and promises to bring with her plenty of New Year fun and frolics. Little Boy Blue begins at Merrydales’ Grand Fete where Willard 'Wiggles' Wigglesworth has brought his hot air balloon along to give rides to the townsfolk. Johnnie Blue has fallen head over heels for Susie Sidebottom, who happens to be the Mayor’s daughter and during one of their meeting, they unfortunately offend the evil witch, Halloweena who comes up with a humorous revenge. Halloweena will be portrayed by the drama group’s Kate Kendell who has featured in many previous productions. The panto's dame, Johnnie’s mother Bessie, will be played by Joe Hicks, whose last pantomime part was Prince Charming in Cinderella. "This is the first time I’ve played the dame and I’m loving every minute of it. I’m lucky to be playing most of my scenes with my good friend, George Jefferies, who plays Willard 'Wiggles' Wigglesworth. We really work well together and can bounce ideas off each other to bring out the best in our characters." Getting back to nature A FOOD-GROWING community project in Stapleton is looking for people to take part in its next volunteer scheme. Based on Frenchay Park Road, Avon Wildlife Trust’s Feed Bristol project was set up in March 2012 on a piece of overgrown land that had been previously used by a farmer as a nursery. The trust decided to use it as a space to inspire and educate people about how food-growing land can support wildlife, as well as create social impact in an urban setting. The aim is to champion conservation and ecology to inspire people to take action to create a nature-
rich city. Vegetables such as potatoes, kale, onions, salad leaves and garlic are grown on the site’s six acres, with produce split among volunteers in return for their involvement in the project. In addition, a range of diverse habitats such as ponds have been created alongside the food spaces in order to attract wildlife including frogs and hedgehogs. As part of the project’s commitment to engaging residents in nature, Feed Bristol

runs a volunteer Grow Leader programme to help people develop skills for a career in conservation or horticulture. As part of the placement, full training is provided alongside practical work experience of food growing and delivering activities with community groups. To take part, volunteers are required to give a commitment of two days a week for nine months, and since it started three years ago Feed Bristol has been able to support 40 people into employment by teaching them a range of new skills that they can add to their CVs. Successful applicants for the next volunteer placement programme - which is due to start on February 12 - will also be given the opportunity to take part in Feed Bristol’s next Grow Leader course for free, instead of a cost of £450 or £600 depending on income. This 12week course starts on March 22 and covers three modules (food growing, community engagement and ecology and conservation). After completion of the course, which takes place every Thursday, students will receive an official Avon Wildlife Trust Certificate as proof of their newly developed skills in ecological land management. As well as running educational placements and courses, Feed Bristol’s wildflower nursery homes to more than 200 native species - is also open to the public on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9am – 3.30pm during the winter, as well as the first Saturday of the month.Plants bought from the nursery cost £10 for six, with

all proceeds reinvested back into the project. Feed Bristol also has spaces available to hire for weddings, team building days and other events. Speaking about Feed Bristol and the work that it does, project manager Matt Cracknell said: “We want to inspire residents, schools, community groups, local businesses and people from disadvantaged backgrounds to spend longer in the natural world, by teaching them and giving them the confidence to take action and create a nature-
rich city. “When you come here, you feel like you can just leave the city and your worries behind and embed yourself in nature instead, something which we think is so important for the health and wellbeing of the people of Bristol.” Applications for the next programme close on January 29. Rev up for People's Grand Prix KINGSWOOD-based charity Jessie May, which provides hospice and respite care for terminally ill children and their families within their own homes, is celebrating after raising more than £2,600 at one of its newest fundraising events. The People’s Grand Prix was held for the second time in September with more than 70 participants jogging, walking or pushing their way around the 3km wheelchair-friendly track at Odd Down Sports Ground. The amount raised through sponsorship and donations on the day means that the event will definitely go ahead again in 2018. Julian Withers, head of fundraising at Jessie May, said: "We already have plans in place for the 2018 event! "We will be bringing it forward to July and will be officially launching in January when people will be able to sign up." Jessie May specialist nurses provide medical, emotional and bereavement support and offer respite time for parents and siblings. It costs £1,400,000 to provide this care yearly. Stomp in memory of Theo MORE than 70 people took part in an annual charity walk in memory of baby boy Theo Cameron. The annual Stomp event organised by Theo’s parents Sarah Harttrup and Scott Cameron, from Winterbourne, saw participants walk a 20km route from the Water Tower near the Downs to the Cross Hands in Winterbourne, stopping at pubs, cafes and restaurants along the way with collection buckets. Thirty children joined the walk at the Willy Wicket in Downend for the final leg. About £4000 was raised through sponsorship and donations on the route. All funds will go to the charity Jessie May, which cared for Theo. The sum will be added to the £30,000 raised by Theo’s family over the last five years through the Stomp fundraiser and ‘Theo’s Day’, a summer event. Theo’s mum Sarah said: “This year’s Stomp was another great success with lots of support from the people of Bristol who saw us along the way.
It’s always fun to get our supporters together and remember Theo while fundraising for the cause so close to our hearts.” Theo and his twin brother Ollie were born in 2010. Soon after he was born Theo was diagnosed with a rare, terminal condition called ARC Syndrome and he died at nine months old. Throughout his life his family were supported by Jessie May nurses. Sarah continued: “Jessie May did so much for Theo and our family when we really needed it. While Theo was alive our lives were busy with appointments, calls and hospital visits. “Theo was an inspiration to all that were lucky enough to meet him. As Ollie and his younger sister Phoebe grow up, we want them to know and understand that Theo is, and always will be, their brother. These fundraisers are vitally important to keeping Theo’s memory alive.”
Extra nurse joins team
Jazz event raises £600 MUSIC lovers raised £600 for Jessie May at a jazz concert at Longwell Green Community Centre in November. It was organised by Jack and Molly Cox who have been running this style of entertainment in the area to raise money for local charities for nearly 20 years. The music was provided by the Roger Wells Hotshots. Another concert is planned for March 9, 2018 at the same venue, when the band will be Jeremy Huggett’s Dart Valley Stompers.
£23,000 boost from Morrisons A CHEQUE for nearly £23,000 has been handed to Jessie May. The cheque presentation took place at the Morrisons store in Fishponds. The grant comes after an application was made by the Jessie May fundraising team to the Morrisons Foundation, which offers grants to charities making a difference to people’s lives. Jessie May will use the grant to fund its ‘Making Fun Possible’ programme, which aims to provide free, fun respite days.

JESSIE May has received a grant of £30,000 from the Matchroom Sport Charitable Foundation, set up by its patron, World Snooker chairman Barry Hearn. It will enable the charity to recruit an additional senior nurse to its team to meet its growing caseload. Jessie May supports 129 terminally ill children in Bristol, Bath, North Somerset, South Gloucestershire and Wiltshire. Julian Withers, head of fundraising, said: “The impact that this new senior nurse will have on the families we care is astonishing and we are very grateful for the donation."

Shocking toll of fuel poverty TOO many people will be struggling to keep warm in their homes this winter. In Bristol, this problem is severe, affecting over 25,000 people - 13.2 per cent of the city - against a national average of just under 10 per cent. As with other poverty-related issues in Bristol, variations from ward to ward are particularly stark. Some neighbourhoods have more than 23 per cent of households in fuel poverty, sitting within a mile of ones with only 5 per cent. Over the years, I’ve heard some shocking stories from constituents, some facing impossible choices between heating their homes and eating. Last year there were 30 excess winter deaths in my constituency of Bristol East, of which a third are said to have been caused by cold homes. Fuel poverty is caused by a complicated mix of low income and high energy prices, along with poorly insulated housing. I was very pleased the Government finally relented and agreed to a price cap on energy bills. The Government’s record on
home insulation – which fell by 80% in 2010-15 – is woeful, and led to job losses in the insulation industry here in Bristol and elsewhere. However, its new energy efficiency target, that all homes should reach a minimum efficiency rating of band C by 2035 is welcome, and I’ve been pressing the Government for a plan of action to implement this so we can see real increases in the number of homes insulated each year. If you are struggling with your fuel bills, here’s how to get some help: • You could get £140 off your electricity bill for winter 2017 to 2018 under the Warm Home Discount Scheme. Contact your supplier to find out. • Bristol’s Centre for Sustainable Energy (CSE) can provide advice on switching energy supplier to get a cheaper deal and home energy efficiency, www.cse.org.uk. • The WHAM project - a joint initiative by CSE, Talking Money and WE Care & Repair - gives debt
advice and help with installing energy measures in the home, http://www.wecr.org.uk; https:// www.talkingmoney.org.uk. • Warm Up Bristol offers a wide range of home insulation measures, with affordable finance options, www.warmupbristol.co.uk • Bristol Energy is also committed to tackling fuel poverty in the city. Its Bristol Tariff, could save people around £260 a year, and the Bristol Energy Hub can help people having trouble paying their bills, www.bristol-energy.co.uk/fightagainst-fuel-poverty. There are some great community-led initiatives, such as the Energy Ambassador Court run by Des Brown of Growing Futures in Hillfields, which also covers accessing off-grid energy. Appeal for St Patrick's Day event volunteers VOLUNTEERS are being sought to help support a fundraiser for St Joseph's Church in Fishponds. The church, in Forest Road, is hoping to raise £14,000 for new toilets. It is planning a St Patrick’s Day Ceilidh on Saturday March 17 with live band, Irish strew, bar and raffle.
Before and on the night the church will need volunteers to do a variety of roles, which include placing posters in supermarkets, libraries, churches and businesses; visiting various businesses to obtain raffle prizes; promoting the event through local media and preparing and cooking food. Also wanted is a volunteer

n THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH
Where will you find rest? HAD a busy Christmas? 2017 been manic? Maybe you can relate to this: ‘because so many people were coming and going… they did not even have a chance to eat.’ Sometimes the needs of people around us and the demands of life and can be overwhelming. The good news is, Jesus knows what that’s like and is compassionate towards those who follow and seek him. He said to his disciples, and now says to you, “Come with me by yourself to a quiet place and get some rest.” The New Year is a good opportunity to do just that. Calls upon our emotionally and physical energy will always be with us, but it is important to step away occasionally from it all – away from people, away from TV, away from phones – to be quiet and get some rest. But let’s
not leave out a very important element. You see Jesus says, “Come with me by yourself…”. At another point Jesus said, “Come to me, all who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” Jesus wants us to find in him true rest from all our struggles. The funny thing is that as soon as Jesus took his disciples off in the boat for some R&R, 5,000 people from surrounding towns, like swarming paparazzi, ran around the large lake and got to the other side ahead of them. How would you have responded? You’ve headed out of town to your favourite beauty spot for some peace and quiet, to discover a mass of people wanting even more from you! Jesus does not say “Clear off!”, no, ‘he had compassion on them, because
they were like sheep without a shepherd.’ Jesus saw the needs of those closest to him but not at the exclusion of being concerned for many others too. What these wandering sheep needed was care and direction – and so he ‘began teaching them many things.’ Receiving rest from Jesus is like a sheep listening to the voice of a loving, caring, wise shepherd who knows his sheep by name and what is needed for them to thrive. Rather than frantically seeking here and there for what might help or satisfy (and getting hurt and lost in the process), Jesus says come to me and listen to me. Jesus loves his sheep so much that he gave his life to rescue them. He is the sacrificial shepherd. Why would we not trust and find rest in a person

New drive for electric vehicles BRISTOL’S cabinet has approved two proposals designed to encourage drivers to switch to electric vehicles. Both have been made possible thanks to £7 million funding from the Department for Transport’s Office for Electric Vehicles (OLEV) and are designed to help improve air quality in the city whilst also delivering on the Mayor’s commitment to ensure that the whole city is powered by clean energy by 2050. New electric vehicle charging points will be installed across Bristol and the West of England region as part of the Go Ultra Low West project. The council will aim to manage and operate a network of 400 charging points across the area. As part of the project the cabinet also approved a proposal to update any council vehicles which are over 10 years old to reduce air pollution and save money on running and maintenance costs. Fifty of these will be electric vehicles, funded by OLEV. Marvin Rees, Mayor of Bristol, said: “This is a great opportunity for the council to lead the way in improving air quality in the short term and make progress towards our long term aim to make Bristol a city that is run on clean energy. “Not only do these proposals improve our environment they also make good economic sense. Updating our own fleet, for example, is saving us money with maintenance and running costs."

Council set to act on single-use plastics A CALL to address the environmental impact of ‘single use’ drinking cups in Bristol has passed at full council with cross-party support. The motion came from Lib Dem Councillor Clare Campion-Smith with input from Green councillors Fi Hance and Martin Fodor. It calls on Bristol’s Labour Mayor to introduce a small charge on non-recyclable drinking cups provided at City Hall and other venues controlled by the council, as well as lobbying central government for a charge at the national level which could be similar to the successful charge on plastic bags introduced in October 2015. ‘Single-use’ plastics are so-called because they either cannot or are not designed to be recycled. These are things like plastic film wraps, straws, coffee stirrers, soda and water bottles and most food packaging. Green councillors contributed some changes to the Lib Dem motion which were agreed the day before the full council meeting. These included calling on the mayor to ensure all outlets on council land offer reusable coffee cups for sale, to request all council contractors to switch to fully recyclable drinks cups, and to ensure cups are only sold with recyclable lids. Councillor Fi Hance said: “Thanks are due to the Lib Dem councillors who allowed us to contribute to writing this motion without having to go through the lengthy amendment process in full council – it is an excellent, common sense green idea. Following this motion passing with cross-xparty support I hope to see action from the Mayor on this soon.”

We loved our snowball fight!
A HAPPY New Year from everyone at PROPS. We had a busy and festive time in the run up to Christmas with lots of events to keep us busy. We had two meals out with our students which were lots of fun for everyone. Many thanks to the Beaufort Arms in Hawkesbury Upton for putting on such a fantastic meal. Students had a game of skittles and a snow ball fight after! Groups also went to carol concerts at Colston Hall and Briarwood Special School. We had several fairs throughout December, where we sold lots of PROPS crafts and produce. We are always looking for new outlets and events for the PROPS pop-up stall. Please get in touch with Lauren Walker if you have any opportunities for us. Before Christmas, PROPS staff undertook Signalong training with the Bristol Central Learning Disabilities Team. We are looking forward to practising signing with our students, and improving our communication all round. Also coming up is our Healthy
Eating week. After all the Christmas indulgences, we thought it would be a great time to talk about nutrition, portion size and keeping active. At PROPS, we already have sports sessions and try to promote healthy food choices. We hope that our students will be able to learn something to apply to their home lives as well. We would like to say a huge thank you to Kier Construction for providing us with a fantastic
new kitchen. They donated new units and their time to fit it. We are looking forward to this space being much more user-friendly from now on. We have masses more storage space, and everything looks clean and fresh! Our independent living skills group will be able to benefit from a working kitchen straight away. n CULTURAL FIX WITH ANNA BLIGHTMAN
A time for nourishment ... THE January chill. Party season is over, and everyone looks to set goals, ambitions and challenges for themselves in the coming year. Some will succeed, others fail, but we are an insistent bunch and set them anyway. In particular we tend to think it is a good time to detoxify the body following the purge of Christmas, driven by a desire for a clean sheet, internally and externally. However January and the cold winter months are actually a time for the body to rest, and a need to nourish both the body and the soul is never more apparent. (Nourishment doesn’t mean twenty mince pies and a box of Quality Street washed down with three bottles of fizzy wine by the way!) We should be looking at ways to replenish our stores with warm cooked foods in order to be ready for the busyness of spring. Traditional Chinese medicine is based on the theory that the body’s vital energy “Qi” flows
through channels called meridians that have branches connecting to our bodily organs and functions. Qi can get blocked, become stagnant or deficient causing the body to become weak or “ill” and then begin to malfunction. This can be caused both by external and internal factors which include the foods we do (or don’t eat), as well as our lifestyle and emotions. I spoke with Roland Lewis who runs The Healing Space, an acupuncture clinic on a Thursday evening at the Steiner Academy. He set up the clinic in order to make acupuncture more affordable and accessible to those who may not have experienced it before. An acupuncturist uses specific points on the body which will help to move and clear blocked or stagnant Qi, thus restoring the body to optimal health. Whilst the common myth is that acupuncture is for treating pain, it can be helpful with all sorts of functions and conditions within the

body. Including hyperthyroidism, eczema and asthma. Acupuncture has also been associated with helping infertility with a huge 40 per cent increase in effectiveness when undertaking IVF treatment. Toddlers and children have been known to have very quick reactions to the treatments. I went along The Healing Space (which costs between £20 and £30 for a session) and, following a detailed questionnaire and consultation, found myself on a couch with four needles up and down my left arm (I’ve had a complaint there since May) and a couple in my feet. It wasn’t painful, in fact it was rather meditative to lie still, yet I definitely felt a shifting internally that put me at ease. When the session was finished, we chatted through reactions Roland had noticed, and what further sessions would hope to achieve. Personally, this feels like a much more productive way to move the body’s energy around and begin

n GARDENING IT’S been a productive year with the usual ups and downs that are inevitable, but on the whole a lot more up. It’s not always a struggle to come up with 600 words every month for these articles, but sometimes I’m a little short and find myself filling the space with musings about the weather, it is after all the favourite topic of conversation in this country. I’ve decided to run 12 articles on botany instead this year, from the lower forms of plant life that are the likes of single celled phytoplankton through to what makes complex plants tick. Hopefully this will prove informative and even a little interesting, but will be tailored to real life in the garden so you should be able to take something practical away from it. I recently had a birthday and apart from the giant foam hand with ‘#1 dad’ written on in and a lovely turquoise pendant from my kids, most of my presents were gardening related, including, and in my opinion one of the best items that a gardener can own, a pair of Felco secateurs. I’ve continually struggled in the past with cheap ones thinking that they I could get by with them, and with no other knowledge I guess I have, until now. It feels like swapping out an old Reliant Robin for a brand new Tesla. It’s always been advised to spend a little time over the winter cleaning and sharpening tools, making sure that they’re in pristine condition but there’s never really seemed much point when what you have is on the verge of irreparable and soon as it’s first used. I’ve had an epiphany though and will be making this now an annual task. The fact that within five minutes of using them there was a nice 1.5” gash in my

hand is testimony to the quality and sharpness of the blades, not advised for minor surgery though on anything but your plants. #1: The smallest of the small As plants are made up of cells, each with its own characteristics, you can’t get anything smaller than just the one, an organism comprising of just a single cell. That’s where I’m going to start, right at the bottom with algae. Often for homeowners and gardeners algae are a bit of a pain, if they’re not creating a thick bloom in the pond, they’re creating a slippery matt on your paths or any other area that’s wet. They don’t possess any way of preventing themselves from drying out so will nearly always be found where there is some fairly constant dampness. There are actually a huge variety found in this group of photosynthetic organisms, and they’re not just limited to single cells. Most people will be familiar with seaweed, this is a very common multi celled algae that is far from the slime that we find at home. They also differ from land plants in that they don’t have many of the structures that you would expect to find such as leaves, roots and other organs. They also lack the distinct cell types such a xylem and phloem that you find in these plant too, I’ll talk more about these cell types in a later article as
there are some really fascinating things about them that explain a lot about what we take for granted in the garden. The one feature that they do have with more common plants is that they are phototropic meaning that most are photosynthetic and gain energy from sunlight. Unfortunately, and this will be a common fact, there are always exceptions to the rule. If I state that a plant has a specific characteristic I mean most, but rarely all. This is the briefest of forays into the subject but with limited space I’ll have to leave further study up to you. Again it’s a quiet month so
check that all your overwintering plants are in a good condition and if you have time, start to prepare beds for the coming months with a good dressing of organic matter.

Your vigilance is such a help to us IT has been another extremely busy month over the festive period and your local neighbourhood team have been "up and at em" targeting issues in your area. My theme for this month’s column is how local communities are our eyes and ears on the ground and how your information helps us to catch criminals and protect vulnerable people. We had a successful story of neighbours looking out for each other on the new St Matthias housing development in Fishponds recently. A burglary was reported to us where thieves had targeted the house via the letterbox, using a metal hook similar to a coat hanger to gain access. At the same time a man was reported to us who had been in the area claiming to be a property developer and / or window cleaner. Vigilant residents
suspected that something wasn’t right – he was quite scruffy for a property developer! – and reported their concerns to us. Thanks to them we have been able to identify a suspect who we are seeking to interview in relation to these incidents. Local residents have set up a Facebook group dedicated to their estate where home owners are able to share details of any suspicious people, vehicles and / or incidents very quickly. It's a neighbourhood watch online, a modern day home guard and it puts everyone on alert. It is a fantastic way to communicate and stay in touch with your neighbours. Is this something you could consider for your area? Vigilant neighbours have also reported a vulnerable woman
living alone in Eastville, whom they believed had been targeted by drug dealers, who they suspected were using her home to distribute drugs – a process known as ‘cuckooing’. Their suspicions were correct. Thanks to their reports, we were able to gather intelligence, obtain warrants and disrupt the activity. The woman is being supported by partner agencies as well as by us. If you suspect such activity in your area then please do report it. At Trinity Road Police Station we have a regular drugs operation, known internally as ‘Blueline’, which actively targets drug dealers, arrests them and puts them before the courts. You may have seen some of the BBC’s recent ‘Drugsland’ series which followed our officers on this operation as they worked to disrupt drug
dealing in Stokes Croft and other parts of Bristol. Our work continues and throughout 2018 we will carry on working to reduce the harm caused by drugs in our communities. We have recently set up a new beat surgery beat in the foyer of Morrisons on Fishponds Road. Our next date is January 17 at 11am. Consider neutering your pets IT is important that pet owners consider neutering their pets. It carries many health benefits and also helps with pet population control. Un-neutered female dogs are prone to developing mammary tumours and pyometras - where the uterus fills with infection and which often requires emergency surgery. Seasons can also be an inconvenience to owners who will need to keep their bitch away from entire males whilst she is in season. Male dogs may benefit from neutering if they exhibit excessive sexual behaviour, get picked on, or are aggressive towards other dogs in the park. However, if your dog is nervous we would recommend delaying neutering as this can often make it worse. Female cats are prolific breeders. They can be very determined to escape when in
season and can have 2-3 litters per year which makes it difficult to spay them in between litters Un-neutered adult male cats have an unpleasant aroma and are more likely to roam and get into fights leading to abscesses, diseases and as a worst case scenario, a car accident. Rabbits also benefit from neutering as it makes it easier to litter train them, bond them and also eliminates the high risk of uterine tumours in females. We neuter cats and male rabbits from 5 months of age and female rabbits from 6 months of age. Female dogs can be neutered at 6 months, however certain breeds may benefit from waiting 3 months after their first season. Male dogs can be neutered from 6 months but we would advise waiting until at least 1 year of age for large breed dogs to allow their bones

It's not as easy as that, Chancellor HAVING had a bit of time to digest the recent Budget, the focus of it seemed to be the same old refrain of ‘we’re going to build our way out of trouble’: The current version of trouble being the economic doldrums that have been predicted to last for the next few years. This is an easy solution, as building things apparently leads to a ‘multiplier effect’ in the supply chain, which leads to four times as much economic activity being generated as it would appear. I am no economist, but clearly this intended direction of travel, if the train indeed gets out of the station, indicates that there is going to be big pressure, yet again, on the planning system to yield permissions. At the same time, however, any money that is going into achieving this is being focused on delivering the infrastructure to support housebuilding, rather than resourcing planning departments. Those departments will instead have to cope with further cuts in public spending. In effect, another old refrain can be heard ‘get more from less’. You will recognise the tune. It has been top of the charts since around 2008. At the same time, there was some recognition paid to the number of unimplemented planning permissions. This is a source of frustration for all those looking to put a dent in the housing shortage. Effectively, gaining planning permission is the first step towards getting a house built. It does not guarantee that it will be built, as the landowner only has to make a start within three years of the permission being approved. When the permission

has been achieved in a speculative manner, the owner will want to sell the land with permission to build. This establishes the site’s increase in value. But the value is determined by how much a buyer is willing to pay for it. The next delay becomes taking the site to market - often an auction. Next the seller's expectation needs to be satisfied. There is normally a reserve price that has to be met. This process exposes the gap between expectations. If the sellers are not seeing the return that they were expecting, then the seller will re-assess and maybe delay the sale. Timing makes a big difference to the buyer as well. Land is expensive and to get the best price, all the buyers need to have the cash to spend at the time of the sale. Another delaying element, once it has been established who will undertake the building, is the time that it can take to clear the conditions on the planning permission. Once again, this is a resource issue. Planning departments are more concerned with new applications than clearing conditions, even though both actions generate fees. Often conditions cover elements that are technical and require assessment from outside agencies, such as the Coal Authority and it can again can take time for such organisations to be prepared to sign off on a condition. Often this can require further information to be provided. Perhaps the most pernicious delaying factor is land banking. This occurs when a developer has enough planning permissions in the ‘bank’ to pick and choose which

one to make a start on. The one that gets the green light is usually the one that will yield the biggest profit or has the fewest problems attached. That judgement is not tied to housing need but market factors such as where the houses will sell most readily. This is where I suspect the Chancellor was focusing his real effort talking up the economy and the government’s desire to see more housing. This could be an attempt to generate the confidence that the infrastructure will be provided to encourage people sitting on unimplemented planning permissions to get started. To my ears, it all sounded somewhat hollow, but time will tell. Just don’t expect a building boom to make houses any more affordable. There is a widening gap between the bottom of the housing ladder and the ground that the Budget conveniently ignored. According to all the forecasts, wages are not going to provide those missing rungs. I don’t believe that a

n FISHPONDS MUM PEOPLE say that parenting in the first year of life is about learning to feed, the second year is about physical development and the third year focuses on the brain’s ability to process and develop language. Parenting a two year old, this certainly feels accurate. Physical jumping, dancing, reaching and climbing are all everyday challenges for my little one so when I heard that there was a local children’s yoga class, it seemed a good fit so I went to try it out. Pippa Yarworth-Cleeton is an expert yoga specialist who has turned her attention to

Having spent a considerable career honing her craft, she is now someone who makes yoga look effortless and shares her ability to involve children in a fun and relaxing class. Although my daughter is only two, she joined the aged four

to eight class. First of all Pippa warmed the children up, shared names and helped them to feel connected through toys and objects. Then she read them a We’re Going on a Bear Hunt with repetitive yoga poses: we became caves, we were downward dogs, we were the sun, stretching high up in the sky. My child loved every second. Each child had their own mat and space and was given their own blanket at the end to curl up in and rest. Yes, yes, yes, but how on earth does she do this with toddlers? My answer is: she just does, and they do the moves. She helps them breathe, stretch and test out their limbs, wiggle their toes, reach into space. It just works. At the end, to my child’s delight, the children have juice and biscuits. At first, I didn’t understand why the classes were at 4pm, but suddenly by the end of the class I realised that this is the perfect post-school activity to wind down. I’m going to side step the part where I assumed it was a class for parents as well and came in my ‘yoga outfit,’ (which, in fairness, isn’t much different to the outfit I would have been wearing come 5pm in the evening anyway.) She was more than happy for me to get some exercise alongside my child. When talking to Pippa, it is clear that she is an inspirational woman. She is doing these classes after a career in the practice of yoga and to make a difference to the way children feel and respond to the world. From supporting teenagers locally to be mindful in the build
up to exams to helping a four year old to stop, breathe, be present in their bodies, just for a minute… is just what we could do with locally. She is in high demand. Running her own business called ‘Press Pause’, Pippa has been a Fishponds’ native for some time and this is her way of investing and giving something back to her community. I felt so relaxed having just been in her company. I love that she is so committed and so highly skilled at yoga that she shares it with tiny people who learn how to stretch and imagine what it’s like to be a tree. What a great gift to offer a child and to shake off what’s happened at school or nursery at the same time. Younger children are welcome. Pippa runs children’s yoga classes on Tuesdays at St Johns Hall, Lodge Causeway, Fishponds at 4pm –5.45pm for children aged 4–8 and 5pm - 5.45pm for children aged 8 - 11. These classes are dropin classes at £4 per session. Pippa has a mindfulness and yoga club at the Bean Tree café in Page Park on Wednesdays at 4pm and these classes are £30 per term as the children have a different theme each week (e.g., selfconfidence, stress, resilience) and work towards a termly craft project. Pippa also teaches grownup yoga at the Bean Tree café (Wednesday at 12pm) and Chester Park Junior School (Tuesday at 6.30pm). Four classes are £20 or £7 each. n FEATURE Splits between parents can have devastating effects on children. For Jake Britton, it could have destroyed his life. But with the support of mum Hayley Cook and a sporting charity, Jake has carved out a great future for himself. Jake and his mum speak to Jayne Taylor to show how, with the right guidance, young people can turn their lives around JAKE Britton was in the first year of sixth-form at Mangotsfield School when his parents split up. It was a difficult time for all involved, not least for the 16-year-old who knew he had to knuckle down at school if he was to achieve good grades. "Jake was really close to his dad and it really knocked him when we split," Hayley said, describing the separation as 'nasty'. "I had been working 16 hours a week which meant I was around a lot but after we split I had to get a full-time job. Jake felt all alone because I was working and so was his older brother. He lost all interest in school and we couldn't get him motivated. He put on about three stone in about 10 weeks. I just didn't know what to do." Hayley, 43, who lives with Jake and other son, 20-year-old Charlie, in Mangotsfield, knew continuing at school wasn't the right thing for Jake but it was now law that children stayed on in education until the age of 18. "I signed the release papers for Jake and said to the head 'What happens now? He's got no apprenticeship or college placement. What do I do?'" The school put Jake in touch with social services whose careers advisers mentioned Bath Rugby Foundation, the charitable arm of Bath Rugby Club which runs courses under its HITZ programme aimed at unlocking the potential of 'nontraditional' learners through

rugby. Through sessions which are 50/50 practical and theory, the award winning programme gives young people the skills to get back into education, vocational training, apprenticeships and employment. Jake, who had always loved sport, was immediately interested. He said: "I played rugby before and thought if it was a rugby-based course then I was up for going to look around. When heard it was based at The Rec where Bath Rugby Club play, I thought that would be an experience in itself." Curious, Jake went to look around in January 2017 on his 17th birthday.
n WE'RE incredibly proud of Jake and the progress he has made. When he came to us in January he had dropped out of sixth form and had lost focus. Since then Jake has become a massive character in the group and a natural leader that all members respect and look up to. He shows commitment to the course travelling over an hour and a half each morning and night just to get to HITZ and back. He is always the first to volunteer and ask to help lead activities at other clubs run by Bath Rugby Foundation. He is very keen to get into coaching and therefore tries to gain as much coaching experience as possible. Jake's first-day nerves about being the newbie soon vanished and to his surprised he discovered it was an environment he could thrive in. "Knowing I was the new boy and had to travel in was a bit intimidating but on my first day everyone was really friendly and that made me feel a lot more confident about going back the next day." Within months, Jake flourished, standing out as a natural leader, particularly with his work visiting schools telling young people about sport and fitness and championing the HITZ programme. Jake's diligence and natural rapport with youngsters even earned him a national HITZ Young Ambassador of the Year award, which goes to an individual who has done the

most to represent the HITZ programme to their peers and communities. When he was handed the gong by Bath prop Kane PalmaNewport at a glittering ceremony at the BT Tower in London, Jake knew he had he chosen the right path. Jake said: "Being nominated was an achievement but when I won it, it came as a bit of a shock. It was a stand-out moment for me and really meant something. HITZ has really changed my life." Now Jake, who has bagged a part-time job in a sports shop in Bath, is looking forward to a very bright future as a rugby coach. "I plan to finish my Level 2 course and from there go on to get my RFU coaching badge which could ultimately get me a job in rugby coaching. "Sixth-form wasn't for me. I had a lot on my mind because of my mum and dad splitting up and I just couldn't concentrate. Now I feel much more settled, positive and confident. I'm much more active too. "I now have a better understanding of what I want to do for a career. The staff here want the best for me and will try to the best of their ability to help me get a job in rugby coaching." Hayley, a confectioner, said: "Jake went from being in a family that would take him everywhere to having to do things for himself because I had to work. He never knew anyone on the course and had to catch two buses to get there but he still did it. "By the April, I really noticed the difference in him. He'd lost weight and was much more sociable. He's doing really well. He's got himself a part-time job and has just passed his driving test. I'm so proud of him. "HITZ has been a life-line not just for Jake but for the both of us. I can't champion the staff enough. n NOSTALGIA AN EXHIBITION chronicling the dramatic changes at the former Fry’s factory at Somerdale since chocolate production ended in March 2011 is the latest to feature at Frenchay Village Museum. Somerdale - Then and Now has been put together by a number of ex-Somerdale employees and will run at the museum until just before Easter. Cecil Fry, of the Grove, Frenchay, became chairman of Fry’s in 1924 when his father Roderick retired. Work on moving the Bristol factories to Keynsham had already begun when Cecil took over, and he laid the foundation stone of the office block at Somerdale in 1932. The ceremonial mason’s tools that Cecil used are now housed in Frenchay Village Museum. Following the closure of the Somerdale chocolate factory in 2011, the three original

Cecil Fry became the chairman of Fry's in 1924 factory blocks were acquired by St Monica Trust to create a retirement living community called The Chocolate Quarter. In January 2106 Cecil’s
grandson Cosmo Fry used the same ceremonial mason’s tools to lay the foundation stone of the new St Monica’s facility. The £60 million pound
development by St Monica Trust will eventually provide 140 assisted living apartments and a 90-bed care home, as well as providing office space, retail outlets, and leisure facilities. Although the exhibition will run for several months, a special event is planned for Sunday January 28 when there’s a chance to meet some former Fry’s staff who promise to have a sweet surprise in store for visitors. Frenchay Village Museum re-opens after the winter shutdown on January 6, and is open Saturday and Sunday from 2-5pm and Wednesday from 1-4pm. Entry is free.

There's no stopping these judo girls MEET the Whitfields. The judo-crazy sisters might only be primary school age but they are already proving a force to reckon with. Charlie, 11, and Ashlie, eight, have just returned from the IRJT Championships in Holland where they both returned with medals. The girls, who are both pupils at Begbrook Primary Academy, were given the chance to compete in a new state-of-theart stadium in the The Hague called Sportcampus Zuider Park and rose magnificently to the occasion. This was the third time Charlie had fought in the competition. In her first year she came fourth, in her second she took silver but this year managed to bag a gold medal after winning all her five fights. Despite being Ashlie's first international and having to fight older and more experienced girls, she lost two fights but won her third fight, taking a bronze medal. Wonderful day of shockwave training Blog 47: Shockwaves and Super Heroes I HAVE a duty to tell those of you who read my last blog that I have managed to keep my gallbladder inside my body so far. It’s been just over a month since my gallbladder attack and impromptu trip to A&E. I have cut out all alcohol and fatty foods in an attempt to let it settle down, and so far, it’s working. The pain in my stomach has pretty much gone and I am back to work. It’s a tough time of year to have such a strict change of diet. So far, I have been on three Christmas nights out without drinking and it’s a very odd experience. I’m going to try and keep it up for three months at least, which will be the first time that I haven’t drunk alcohol for that long since I was 18, so I guess its time to get on with it! This month we had a day of shockwave training at the clinic for all the staff and even some guests from our friends at ACE feet in motion who we work with at Bristol Rovers. It was great to get some more training on this wonderful new machine that has been included in the NHS’s own A BRISTOL Rovers fan says he is honoured to win this year's Gashead Hero award for his charity work. Downend's Mark Brimson has raised more than £20,000 for Bristol-based charity Headway following the death of his wife Gloria in 2007. Mark's relentless charity work has now been recognised by his favourite football club when he was given the Gashead Hero award 2017 at the club's home game against Southend United on December 9. Mark described the experience of receiving the accolade in front of the cheering crowd as "surreal".
