THE general election result is generally regarded as meaning that the British people have had enough of austerity - and yet it is now that the cuts are really beginning to bite. There seems little doubt that as public services are reduced it will be up to local people to take on more for themselves. Fortunately in Fishponds there are many people who are willing to stand up and be counted. This edition of the Voice provides many examples of individuals and groups willing to go the extra mile for their beliefs and for their community.

Kerry wins third term as our MP

Campaigners 'appalled' as McDonald's gets go-ahead MCDONALD’S has won permission to open a drivethrough restaurant and takeaway on Fishponds Road following a planning inquiry. Martin Whitehead, the planning inspector, ruled in favour of the fast-food giant after the seven-day hearing in spite of opposition from campaigners and Bristol City Council. He said the development of a two-storey restaurant at the former tile depot at 541-551 Fishponds Road would improve the area and any concerns could be controlled by planning conditions. The Say No to MacDonald’s in Fishponds group said it was appalled and astounded by the decision, announced on June 15. It has six weeks in which to appeal to the High Court and is considering its options, but the cost of taking the protest further

is likely to be prohibitive. Mike Jempson, chairman of NoMacinF, said it was disgraceful that the 495 written objections, the 1,667 signatories to the group's petition, and 617 local residents who signed another petition had been dismissed. “A careful reading of his [the inspector’s] decision shows that he has swallowed whole McDonald’s arguments, giving them the go-ahead with scant regard to the wishes and concerns of local residents. There was never clearer evidence of the way planning law has been skewed to favour developers over against the common people. “From his report it is clear that he expected local volunteers to match the technical evidence produced by contractors handsomely rewarded by McDonald’s to reproduce similar documents every time the fast

food giant is challenged by local residents. The campaigners objected to the development because of the impact on traffic on Fishponds Road and on people living nearby. They also raised concerns about air pollution, smells and health risks of fast food, especially for children. Takeaways are discouraged within 400 metres of a school. The McDonald's site is just outside that limit but still close to Bristol Metropolitan Academy and Fishponds CE Academy. Mr Jempson said: "While some of our concerns are expected to be addressed in conditions which will be applied to the development under the supervision of Bristol City Council, we remain convinced that the McDonald’s footprint will be to the detriment of Greater Fishponds. "

KERRY McCarthy retained her Bristol East seat for Labour at the 2017 general election with an increased majority. She polled 30,847 votes while her Conservative opponent Theodora Clarke, who also contested the seat in 2015, received 17,453. Liberal Democrat Chris Lucas was in third placd with 1,389 votes and the Green Party's Lorraine Francis received 1,100 votes. The constituency had been targeted by the Tories but Labour increased its hold here and in Bristol South and West, as well as taking Bristol North West from the Conservatives. Ms McCarthy, who has been MP for Bristol East since 2005, pledged to continue to work hard for all constituents. Turnout was 70.35 per cent, up from 64.9 in 2015.

n NEWS At a glance These are the cuts being consulted on between now and September 5: • Day services for adults with learning disabilities and other needs to save £1.2m by 2020; • Libraries £1.4m by 2020; • Public toilets (except those in parks) £440,000 per year;

Service set to be reduced THE council’s plans are for closure of more than half of Bristol’s 27 libraries. It has come up with three options based on different priorities – deprivation and community need, the state of the building, its location, and how well it is used. In each case, the plan is for the Junction 3 Library in St Paul’s to be the main Area Library for the east of the city. Fishponds Library, in Robinson House, pictured, would become a Local Library, staffed three days a week for a total of 22.5 hours, rather than the current 36 hours over six days. Swipe-card access, which has recently been trialled at St George Library, would be available at other times. Hillfields Library, which was refurbished last year so that

This is a fraction of the £33m savings agreed for 2017-18, or the total £104m cuts identified between 2017 and 2022.

the building could be shared with Little Hayes Nursery, is earmarked for closure in all three options. However, the council is keen to hear from anyone interested in taking on part of the library service, which could lead to community groups keeping branch libraries open with volunteers. The Little Hayes Hub and the project at The Old Library at Eastville - which was shut in a previous round of cuts and transferred to a local group to run as a community centre - are being hailed as creative models of how to keep facilities open.

Cabinet councillor Asher Craig said: “Our existing public library service was built decades ago and since then there have been major changes in population, transport, technology and patterns of use. Our proposals are based on robust evidence and an assessment of local needs. The proposals offer the opportunity to explore a range of possibilities which will transform the service, including where and how it is provided. We are open to suggestions such as integrating and possibly co-locating libraries with other services or community facilities.”

Libraries, lollipop patrols, and toilets all facing axe FISHPONDS is set to see library hours cut, public toilets shut and lollipop patrols axed as Bristol City Council aims to save another £4.7 million over the next three years. All the changes will be subject to public consultation, which runs until September 5. But mayor Marvin Rees made it clear, as he launched the consultation on June 13, that the savings had to be made. “We still have to balance our budget, and we are working under a national government that is committed to austerity,” he said. Adult social care is also being cut and neighbourhood partnerships – the local meetings which brought residents together with the police, the council and other bodies - are being wound up. Mr Rees held out little immediate hope for Bristol to escape the cuts, despite the hung parliament delivered by June 8’s General Election – a result widely seen as a vote against austerity. Mr Rees said that despite the need for savings, he still wanted a genuine consultation. He hit out at national politicians who pass the blame for cuts on to local councils. “We make the difficult decisions at a local level,” he said. “National government says it makes the difficult decisions,

but it doesn’t. It makes decisions in the abstract. When we pass our budget we look people in the eye, and we know the impact that some of the savings we have to make have on real people’s lives, because we live in the communities.” Councillor Asher Craig, cabinet member for communities and deputy mayor, said local government is being run according to an antiquated model. “This is an opportunity to talk to the people of Bristol about how we can do things differently, much more efficiently, and which meets the needs of people today and not how we did things 40-50 years ago. “There are some harsh prospects here but in many cases we’re supporting outdated, expensive ways of doing things which aren’t really suitable any more. So while there’s definitely a big challenge and many hard choices, there is also a chance to work together on new ways of doing things. “We are also looking at whether there are ways that the council can support community groups, volunteers and partners to play bigger roles in the delivery of some services. We want to help others to get things done, rather than supplying all the same services ourselves. Getting more involved in your community can help make you happier and healthier, whilst

reducing the impact of these savings, so I’d encourage people to keep that in mind as they take part.” Opposition groups are urging people across the city to join in the consultation and help find ways to stop some of the cuts. Lib Dem Leader Councillor Gary Hopkins said: "We have consistently put forward more positive proposals but I am afraid that so far the Mayor has ignored our views. We will be encouraging the public to have their say and in particular to write in comments where the sensible option has been excluded from the ‘choices’". Green Party leader Councillor Eleanor Combley said: “The changes proposed are huge, and will affect many people across the city, and it is important that you let the administration know if you are one of them. ”

How we might be hit TOILETS in Fishponds Park, Eastville Park and St George park are among 18 facilities the council plans to close. The toilets at Snuff Mills and at Oldbury Court would remain open. The aim is to save £40,000 this year and a further £400,000 a year from 2018-19. Crossing patrols at Minerva Primary Academy, Frome Vale Academy and Begbrook Primary Academy would go, as would those at Chester Park Infant and Chester Park Junior Schools. Lollipop patrols at Glemfrome and May Park would be saved. Community Links services to people with severe dementia and complex learning difficulties would be ended and transport costs cut.

Have your say on the cuts ANYONE can comment on any part of the plans at www.bristol. gov.uk/yourneighbourhood. The consultation runs until Tuesday September 5. People with a disability or access needs can request alternative formats by emailing consultation@bristol.gov.uk or by calling 0117 922 2848. Paper copies are available from libraries and the council’s Citizen Service Point at 100 Temple Street. A series of information meetings has been organised, including two at the Vassall Centre in Fishponds. These are on July 11 from 12.30-2pm and on July 19 from 6.30-8pm. They are open to all, but space is limited, so you will need to book. Find the online details at www.bristol.gov.uk/yourneighbourhood or call 0117 922 2848. Mayor Marvin Rees said: “We will be gathering views across the board and considering them carefully before any final prposals are developed or decisions are made.”

Safety checks at all BRISTOL Mayor Marvin Rees has been to a tower block in east Bristol to reassure residents about the safety of their homes. He was accompanied by fire service and council officials and Bristol East’s MP Kerry McCarthy for the visit to Butler House in Summerhill Road, which came in the wake of the Grenfell Tower tragedy in London. Mr Rees said:“We have all been extremely saddened by the Grenfell fire, and the shock continues to resonate. Our thoughts and sympathies are with the friends and families of those who have lost their lives or been affected by this awful tragedy. “We do not believe there is cause for concern about our tower blocks, but we are monitoring events very closely and will take on board any recommendations that come out as a result of the investigation.

Butler House in St George

This would include any necessary changes to our policies and procedures. “We will decide our next steps once we know more about the causes of the fire and the initial results of the investigation. “I want to reassure our tenants that we are doing all that can possibly be done to protect them, and make sure that Bristol never experiences a similar tragedy.” Councillor Paul Smith, cabinet member for housing, explained to residents in St George that the cladding added to Butler House for insulation and weather production was, unlike Grenfell Tower, fixed directly to the building. Bristol City Council has been spending £2million per year for the last five years on improving fire safety in high rise blocks of flats. It plans to spend at least £1million per year for the next ten years.

city tower blocks All council tower blocks have annual fire risk assessments. Other safety measures in place, include smoke detectors in every home, and sprinklers in the majority of bin rooms – all blocks will have these by the end of the year. Station Manager Steve Quinton, technical fire safety manager at Avon Fire & Rescue, said: “The Grenfell Tower fire was an absolute tragedy and as a service we will take a particular interest in the investigation to make sure we do everything we can to ensure the safety of residents of high rise properties in our area.” Council policy is that if tenants have a fire or smell smoke in their own flat, they should get out, close the door behind them and call 999. If tenants are aware of a fire in another flat they should call 999 and stay put until the fire and rescue service organise an

evacuation. Station Officer Quinton said the visits, which will be taking place at all council tower blocks, provided an opportunity to explain why ‘stay put’ was still the best advice and to address other concerns. Following the difficulty of emergency service access at Grenfell Tower, the Voice asked the fire service officers whether homes built in the grounds of some Bristol tower blocks, including Butler House, posed a problem for crews. We were told that emergency services were considered before new housing was built and access was maintained. Avon Fire & Rescue offer free home fire safety visits for all (not just those who live in tower blocks). Further information is available at www.avonfire. gov.uk/our-services/home-firesafety-visits or call 0117 926 2061.

Glenfrome children on CBBC quiz show

FIVE Year 6 children from Glenfrome Primary School in Eastville had an exciting end to last term - they were selected to take part in the CBBC quiz show Top Class. Headteacher Inger O'Callaghan said: "The children had to complete application forms, answer general knowledge questions, and get through the final hurdle of a Skype interview in order to be chosen. "They were then flown to Glasgow with their parents for four days of excitement! The children had to go to hair and

makeup, which they found highly amusing. "Although the end result is supposed to be a secret until the programme is screened, we can tell you that they did extremely well and we are very proud of them!" The show, hosted by Susan Calman, involves teams of

children answering questions from the National Curriculum. Team captain Jenkin said: "Once we got into the quiz, we were confident." Pupils Tomos and Sumey had not flown before but loved the flight to Glasgow and, along with their fellow team mates, were able to explore the sights of the

city, visiting a science museum and an all-you-can-eat Indian buffet, as well as sampling the delights of deep-fried chocolate bars. The team were entered by Gareth Grimwood, Year 6 learning support assistant, and were accompanied by their teacher Jess Rosser.

HIS family and friends think he's a knock-out and it's no wonder for school boy Jude Moore is certainly packing the punches in the world of boxing. First, the 14-year-old from Fishponds was crowned National Schools Champion in Manchester at the end of May. Then, just weeks later, he represented England in the Three Nations, taking gold in his 5052kg category. And, to top it all, Jude's just been given the news he had been anxiously waiting for - he's made it through to the European Schoolboy Championships in Romania this month following a recent trial. Jude, a student at Mangotsfield School, has been boxing for three years and has compiled an impressive record of 22 contests, winning an impressive 19. He has been honing his skills at Downend Amateur Boxing Club, which is based at the Harry Crook Centre in Fishponds. Under the watchful eye of coach Craig Turner, Jude is proving a force to be reckoned with. Craig said: "We are all delighted and so proud. "Jude works so hard in the gym and is totally obsessed with boxing outside. We cannot think of a more deserving person."

Jude made it to the quarter finals of the National Championships last year but this year won his way to the finals with a win in Milton Keynes against the tough Frank Watson of Danson Boxing Club. After vowing to do well, determined Jude got the result he wanted, winning after a split decision in the under 52k class B final against Isaac Price from Hunslet Boxing Club in Leeds. During the same weekend he was presented with the news that he had been chosen to box for England in the Three Nations Championships from June 3-4 at the Ravenscraig regional sports facility in Motherwell. Jude's first contest saw him beat Scot John Hendry on a split decision, to be followed by further Scottish opposition in Shahzman Parnez who Jude also beat on a split decision to become GB champion. Jude said: "My head is in a spin! Within ten days I'd won the national title, represented my country and became GB Champion. "To then be told I've won a place in the European Championships is just amazing. I can't believe it! I will now be stepping up my training programme and I am determined to give it all I've got."

Vacancies for volunteer drivers A FISHPONDS organisation is looking for drivers to help expand services providing accessible transport for disabled people. Typical trips include hospital and dental appointments, shopping, respite/holiday breaks, sporting activities and social events, including transport to and from the popular Begbrook Club. Martyn Hancock, volunteer director, said: "We started in January 2013 and find our service is always in demand. "We have vacancies for volunteer drivers alongside paid drivers and full training will be given." If you would like to find out more, please call Accessible Transport 4 U on 0117 965 7449.

Oliver's ride in memory of his dad HE might be only eight-years-old but that hasn't stopped Oliver Dewhirst from raising more than £1,800 in support of mental health charity Mind. The schoolboy, who lives in Fishponds, will embark on a sponsored bike ride from Bristol to Bath and back in memory of his dad Mark. Oliver, a pupil at Begbrook Primary Academy, has been taking his training seriously, getting out on his bike as often as possible, determined to complete the 30-mile trek. He will be joined on July 9 by more than 30 others, including his school chums and many of Mark's friends from Leeds and Manchester. Mum Lisa said her husband had suffered from severe depression so the charity Mind was an obvious choice. "The bike ride is a way of raising awareness of mental health which is such a huge topic at the moment," she said. "Oliver's dad was really into cycling which is why Oliver chose to do a bike ride. He is really proud about how much money he's raised and is excited about all the people that will be joining him. We've been out training Oliver with Mark

for the last three or four weeks and he's really focused. Oliver speaks so highly of his dad and that is giving him the motivation." Lisa said Mark, who died in 2013, had been devoted to his family and would have been so proud of his son. She said: "Mark always strived to do everyone proud, with his career as a design engineer at GKN, a keen rugby player at BAC RFC and an avid cyclist. "He was an intelligent, loving and sensitive man who valued his family above everything else.

Village green victory CAMPAIGNERS have won their battle to stop development on a site in the Frome Valley. The plot off Welsford Avenue in Stapleton has officially been designated a village green, meaning it cannot be built on. The Save Frome Valley @ Stapleton group sought the additional protection for Colston's Field, on the edge of the 30-acre grounds of Colston's School, after successfully lobbying against plans for a dozen houses on the site. Bristol City Council turned down the proposal from Woodstock Homes in 2015 after councillors agreed it was incompatible with the Stapleton and Frome Valley Conservation Area and with the local historic park and garden and its setting.

Thousands fight to save ancient oak from new Burger King plans THOUSANDS of people have joined the battle to save a 200-year-old oak tree in Eastville. It is at risk because of plans to demolish the Burger King at Eastgate Retail Park and replace it with a smaller drive-through and a two-storey rank of shops with a gym above. The new Burger King would be closer to the entrance to the park and would mean the tree and other mature trees would go, although the developers would replace them with landscaping and a “green wall”. The council's arboricultura; officer Matthew Bennett said the mature trees are a historic remnant of the gasworks garden and are subject to tree protection orders. He described the oak as "a key amenity feature located in an elevated position over the roundabout."

Lockleaze ward councillors Gill Kirk and Estella Tincknell have pledged support for the scheme because it will provide jobs for local people. The planning application can be viewed on Bristol City

Council’s planning portal with the reference 17/01580/P. More than 100 people have lodged objections on the site, and nearly 5,000 have signed an online petition at https:// you.38degrees.org.uk/petitions/ save-200-year-old-oak-tree-ateatsgate The petition states: “It is an Oak Tree. Britain's has oh so few left, it should be given a protected status. It contributes to the wellbeing of the environment around a very busy junction at Eastgate. “Alternative plans can be prepared and approved to conserve what is after all a very important part of Bristol's natural history. “If the tree comes down it'll prove that the councillors of this great city care more about money than the wellbeing of Bristolians. It's a bad bad idea.”

Warning to families

Steiner Academy is still shaping its identity - Ofsted FISHPONDS’ newest school, Steiner Academy Bristol, has has its first Ofsted inspection and has been found to require improvement. However, the team of three inspectors, who visited in May, acknowledged that the leaders’ efforts were hampered by the 268-pupil academy’s “unusual context and circumstances”. “The school is still in its infancy, growing at a rapid rate and still in the process of defining its identity. Leaders are having to reshape the school so that it fulfils the Steiner ethos while meeting the needs of the pupils who attend the school,” their report said. Frequent changes of staff in some areas of the school had also made it hard to establish consistency of expectation and practice across subjects, it noted.

Attendance said to be was too low and exclusions too high. Lead inspector Steve Smith said the right action was being taken to improve aspects of the school’s work, such as teaching, assessment and behaviour. He also said that the Steiner ethos and curriculum developed pupils’ craft skills, imagination and creativity, and he praised the positive relationships between staff and students. Principal Angie Browne said: "Our school is working hard to create an approach to learning that is genuinely different. Because of this we've had very high demand for school places and we are lucky to have a really active and supportive parent community. "We're really pleased that Ofsted has recognised our difference, and that they have

judged us against our own standards and ethos rather than expecting us to be something that we're not. Ofsted's report identifies our good practice, with our Kindergarten rated as 'Good' and specific mention in the report of good teaching and good relationships between staff and children. "Creating a new kind of school with a different curriculum, new assessment methods and new teacher training programmes at a time when funding is so tight was always going to be a huge task and we would agree with Ofsted that there are areas that still require improvement. However, the school is making progress in the areas that require improvement and Ofsted has also recognised this in their report."

PARENTS and carers have been warned to be on the alert after "a potentially serious safeguarding concern" at Chester Park Junior School. Head teacher Mike McNama told families in a letter that a pupil walking to school was followed by a large silver car. He said the pupil was safe and the family had been kept informed. "Class teachers have spoken to their classes about the importance of ‘stranger danger’. "It is very rare for incidents like this to occur in our locality but I feel it is important to share this information with all of you so that as a community we can remain vigilant over potential dangers to our children." He asked parents to reinforce the important message of staying safe by walking in groups, staying on major routes and being aware of traffic and surroundings.

Why triangular sandwiches were on the menu CHILDREN at Chester Park Infant School have a taste for mathematics. They took part in a Maths Week based around planning a picnic for their families Year 1 and 2 children went shopping on a budget and enjoyed walking to Aldi to buy food. Every child compared prices, looked at weights of items and amounts before paying for their ingredients and checking their change. A Year 2 child said this helped his maths because “We had to know how much

PEOPLE in Fishponds are being urged to keep up the pressure on the city council to continue to maintain the area’s parks. The council’s stated aim is to reduce the citywide parks budget to zero by 2019. It wants volunteers to take on responsibility for the parks - but local groups say this is unrealistic. The volunteers say they will do what they can but have not got the resources or expertise to take on all services. There are fears that without council staff to do basic maintenance such as mowing, and regular safety checks on play equipment, many parks could close. A petition set up by Bristol Parks Forum on June 17 calling on the council to drop the ‘costneutral’ proposal attracted more than 1,000 signatures in its first week. Forum members were meeting the council’s deputy mayor Councillor Asher Craig on June 24, after the Voice went to print, to seek a way forward. Councillor Craig told the Voice that other options were being considered in order

we had to buy and check we had enough money to buy it”. Across the school pupils made bunting using mathematical patterns. Reception children weighed amounts using scales to make pizzas, Year 1 looked at quantities and measures to make cakes and Year 2 calculated amounts of ingredients to make sandwiches. The children hosted the picnic in the playground for their families, where they played bingo and completed a maths quiz.

Rethink demand over plans to cut parks budget to zero to make the £4.4m savings required. The plans could see the parks passed to a charitable trust, set up with the help of the National Trust (NT). “We have have had some early but successful discussions with the National Trust looking at a new model for delivering parks,” said Cllr Craig. Bristol has 28 large parks, including Eastville and Vassalls, but the council also looks after more than 350 open spaces of varying sizes. Another option is to raise more money from staging events, such as Love Saves the Day and Tokyo World at Eastville Park. It has also been suggested that events at Ashton Court might be supplemented by higher parking charges, paid-for facilities such as a Go Ape assault course, and perhaps an admission fee for the Balloon Fiesta. of the larger parks “will help us invest in some of the smaller ones,” said Councillor Craig. A range of other sources of funds are being discussed. The council wants people to come forward with ideas, she said. She praised the work of Bristol’s many local parks groups: “They are doing a lot already – they are absolutely fantastic,” she said. “We don’t necessarily want them to take on the management. If people want to look after shrubs that’s fine, but we aren’t going to ask them to go out and mow the lawns. “I think it will be a case of negotiating with the Bristol Parks Forum and local groups about what they are willing to do.” Rob Acton-Campbell, secretary of Bristol Parks Forum, which brings together voluntary groups from most of Bristol’s parks, said it was a big step up from the £1m a year in parks income at the moment to the

£4.4m needed. “It seem very ambitious to get to that sort of figure in two years – 10 years down the line we could believe,” he said. The money would have to be raised every year – what if there was a wet summer and events were cancelled, asked Mr ActonCampbell? There are also doubts about how many more events parks can take, and whether the council has the staff able to organise them. There is a limit to what residents will do for their parks, he added. “People will volunteer if they think they are adding to what the council is already doing – extra habitat management for wildlife, work on flower beds,” he said, “but if we get to the stage where you are asking volunteers to do the day-to-day stuff, that’s more difficult.” http://epetitions.bristol.gov. uk/epetition_core/view/ ProtectParks

The power of learning PARENTS from Begbrook Primary Academy have created a storytelling map to go with a popular book. The textile creation helps children aged six and seven to retell the story of The Snail and the Whale, by Julia Donaldson. It enables them to rehearse language before starting to write. But the mat does not only support the learning for Year 2 pupils; the work of making it has helped some of the adults involved to move on to gain further skills and qualifications. Clare Morton, parent learning leader at the academy, said the parents had originally been on an art and craft course and had enjoyed it so much they had decided to continue it under their own direction. Clare explained that the aim was for Begbrook Academy to become a learning community for people of all ages.During the past year, at least 24 parents have taken part in parent learning activities and many have gone on to join further Bristol Learning communities team courses at Begbrook or Little Hayes Family Centre. She said: “I have seen the impact of parent learning upon our school community. Our philosophy is that as parents are learning new skills at Begbrook and developing their confidence in learning, they are able to transfer those skills and attitudes to their children. So we feel projects like this are having a hugely positive impact.”

Hate crime: Don't suffer in silence FOLLOWING the incident in Finsbury Park, we want to reassure all our communities we are doing everything we can to keep them safe. Everyone has the right to live and worship peacefully without fear of being targeted for their ethnicity or religion. Our neighbourhood teams have been in contact with faith leaders to provide reassurance and address any concerns. We’ve also been carrying out additional high visibility patrols late into the evening, including areas around mosques. There can never be any excuse for hate crime in any shape or form. If you are a witness or a victim of hate crime or feel vulnerable please contact someone to report it. Someone recently made an anonymous report that two men carrying knives were seen entering a house on Stoke View Road after making racist comments. We attended and both men were

arrested. More people are reporting hate crime than ever before but it is still significantly underreported. Don’t suffer in silence; there are people who can help you. Call us on 101, Crimestoppers on 0800 555111 or via their website at www.crimestoppers-uk.org, or visit the True Vision website (www. report-it.org.uk) for information, advice and to report online. In an emergency, always dial 999. The recent terror attacks have left all of us in shock. These were tragic events and our hearts go out to the loved ones of those who were killed and injured. While the threat level remains at severe, we have no specific intelligence to suggest any cause for alarm in our force area. We’re here to keep you safe. Please be alert but not alarmed and if you do see anything suspicious at any time call us on 101 or the Anti-Terrorist Hotline on 0800 789 321. Again, in an emergency, always call 999.

This month, we’re looking to spread the word about our Nominated Neighbour Scheme, which is designed to help protect elderly and vulnerable people from bogus callers or rogue trading scams. The idea is simple: a vulnerable person nominates a neighbour that they know and trust as someone they can call on when they have suspicious people on their doorstep that they do not recognise. They can show a card to the caller at their door or window, which explains they do not accept unknown callers and asks them to contact their nominated neighbour. If you know someone that could benefit from the scheme, or would like to find out more yourself, please get in touch through the ‘your area’ page of the website, or call 101. Finally, thanks to everyone who came to the annual 999 fun day at Barton Fields. The sun shone and

the community spirit was fantastic. Children were queuing up to get locked up like prisoners in the back of our police van and our beautiful police horses proved popular with all ages. It was great to see some familiar faces as well as get to say hello to some new families. If you didn’t make it this year, be sure to pop down next time! Until next time, Sergeant Anthony Westwell

Could you be a Community Champion? A PROJECT has been launched in Fishponds to help combat isolation and boost social and cultural activities. The Community Champions project is a joint initiative between Bristol Ageing Better and The Care Forum covering Greater Fishponds, including Hillfields, Frome Vale and Eastville. It involves supporting volunteers to create connections with groups and other local people with the aim of making service and activities more agefriendly. Over the next two years they will be recruiting, training and supporting volunteers across the area to be Community Champions and Considerate Friends. Both roles are aimed at ensuring neighbourhoods across Fishponds are vibrant places with a wide range of social and cultural activities and

opportunities for engagement. Community Champions will contribute by finding out about all the different local activities and services available in the area, identifying any gaps and developing projects to fill those gaps. Considerate Friends will involve volunteers visiting services and activities to give help and advice, helping ensure they do not present any barriers against age. Terry Black, Oldbury Court resident, said: “I’m really excited

to be supporting this project in Fishponds with The Care Forum because it will give older people an opportunity to get involved in where they live, meet their neighbours and build stronger communities. "I live in Oldbury Court where there are a lot of elders but very few community activities going on for them to come to and be part of the neighbourhood. This project has the potential to make a real difference to people's lives.” Claire Littlejohn, BAB project

officer, said: “The Care Forum is delighted to launch this project. Being based at the Vassall Centre we have been part of the Fishponds community for a long time. We are so pleased to be developing work that we hope will be a lasting benefit for older people and I am looking forward to working with volunteers and local organisations to make that happen.” The Greater Fishponds Community Champions project will be overseen by a steering group of local people. Local businesses and services also have an important part to play in signposting people to the project, by displaying posters and distributing leaflets. Food Assembly set for first birthday A COMMUNITY initiative in Fishponds that enables people to buy fresh food directly from farmers and producers celebrates its first birthday this month. The Fishponds Food Assembly turns one on July 25 and will look back on an action packed and successful first year. Run by Kola Adetu, Fishponds Food Assembly is a pre-ordered farmers' market providing fresh and organic produce including vegetable boxes, meat, dairy products, bread, wine and food from many Bristol-based food makers. People need to join before they can buy produce but there is no commitment to buy. If you want to purchase items, you place an online order between Wednesday and Sunday evening. Customers can then pop along to Bristol Steiner Academy at the Oldbury Court Road entrance every Tuesday from 5.30-7pm to pick up their order and meet the people who make the food as well as fellow customers. There are 189 local products from 11 producers to choose from, with the average distance the food travels just 16 miles. Because the food is preordered, it means producers aren't having to take away unsold food, which means zero waste. An added bonus is that it encourages like-minded people to meet up when they pick up their weekly shop, adding to the growing sense of community in Fishponds. Kola, 37, who lives in Thingwall Park with his partner Rosie and baby son Tayl, set up a Food Assembly in Fishponds after having to travel to St

Werburgh's and Gloucester Road to buy the products he wanted. He thought that Fishponds would benefit from a scheme where residents could easily get their hands on local produce. Kola said: "The Fishponds Food Assembly is about supporting local food growers and producers, reassuring them that their journey to Fishponds is worth their while and eliminating food wastage and food miles. "It's also about connecting producers to local people and thereby restoring our primal connection to our food and the land. It's a modern twist on the traditional farmers market. "The first year has been a lot of fun. We have had a lot of support. What keeps me going is that people from Fishponds really love what they get from the Assembly and they show their love and appreciation every week. It's very inspiring that people can come together over their love of good food and this has helped build upon the sense of community." The Food Assembly is a social enterprise and is operated as a franchise with local organisers responsible for sourcing producers, building membership and coordinating a weekly 'market'. It started in France in 2011 and now there are now 700 Food Assemblies across Europe. You can read reviews and find out more by visiting www.facebook.com/ FishpondsFoodAssembly or, to sign up to the initiative, go to www.foodassembly.com/en/ assemblies/8506

Frome Vale councillor Nicola BowdenJones, pictured below right , said The Great Get Together in Fishponds Park was a fitting tribute to murdered MP Jo Cox

Picnic in memory of MP Jo "WE have far more in common than that which divide us" are the famous words of Jo Cox, the Batley and Spen Labour MP who was brutally murdered last June. A year on from her death, people in Fishponds gathered at an event in celebration of her memory. In a display of unity on Father's Day, families came together in Fishponds Park to picnic and join in games. Frome Vale Labour councillor Nicola Bowden-Jones said the decision to hold the event had been made by the Friends of Fishponds Park after members listened to an inspiring speech given by Mrs Cox's husband Brendan. She said: "We all talked about how incredibly moved we were by Brendan and what an inspiration he has been to fathers across the UK. We wanted to recognise the contribution both Jo and Brendan made in their commitment towards building community cohesion by focusing on Jo's famous maiden speech she made in

parliament when she said 'We have more in common than that which divides us'. "I was thrilled that so many people were able to attend the event and that people were able to enjoy and appreciate the park. The lovely weather played its part too in the event's success." The picnic in the park was part of a series of celebrations of unity across the UK called The Great Get Together, all held on or around the first anniversary of Mrs Cox's death. The initiative was devised by Mrs Cox's husband Brendan as a legacy to his wife's life and work. Jo Cox died on June 16 2016 after she was shot and stabbed multiple times by Thomas Mair who was associated with far-right organisations. Mair was found guilty of her murder last November and sentenced to life. • Cllr Bowden-Jones is one of three women in Bristol to have been chosen to take part in the Jo Cox Women in Leadership Programme which supports women to take on greater roles within their community.

"I have been particularly lucky to have been chosen along with two other women from Bristol among over 1,000 applications," she said. "We are coming to the end of our training, but the course will continue and new cohorts are needed. It would be great for other women from Fishponds to go forward." Applications for the programme are open to members of the Labour Party.

Taking place during the weekend of September 30, the trail promises to be the biggest yet with local nurseries, schools and libraries already signed up to take part. This year's theme is Great Britons and participants can choose any significant British character - from Boudicca to Boris Johnson. Previous themes have included Heroes and Villains, Film Characters and Myths and Legends, which included a scarecrow of Elvis Presley. Last year’s trail supported Fishponds Foodbank and collaborated with Fishfest’s Sunday Cinema. This year sees a collaboration with B-Bees Craft and Farmer’s Market. The event is run entirely by volunteers and depends on donations to cover the costs of expenses such as printing and delivering leaflets. MetroBus decision FIRST has been confirmed as the first operator for Bristol’s new MetroBus services. It will start operating the route from Ashton Vale to Temple Meads in the autumn. First has already ordered the guided buses it will use on the route. These will be tested over the summer and drivers will be trained on how to use the guided busway. Work is continuing on the route of the Cribbs Causeway to Hengrove Park route, which will serve north Bristol. This includes widening Stoke Lane to create a bus lane. MetroBus says that while this work, due to be completed in early autumn, is going on there will be some narrow lanes and short-term traffic lights. The cycleway/ footpath will remain open. The stone cladding of the new retaining wall is almost done.

n THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH

Please don't let fear win WHAT are you afraid of? Spiders? The dark? Change? A while ago I came across a survey which had been carried out to find our common fears. The top ten came out as 1. Public speaking; 2. Heights; 3. Insects; 4. Debt; 5. Deep Water; 6. Illness; 7. Death; 8. Flying; 9. Loneliness 10. Dogs! Maybe this list surprises us ,maybe it doesn’t. But there are lots of things we are afraid of. All of us know what it is to be afraid, even if we are afraid of different things. If you live in a flat you may have fears related to the safety of your home after the awful Grenfell Fire disaster in London. If you travel or go to concerts you may

have fears related to the recent terrorist incidents in London or Manchester. If you are a Muslim you may have fears resulting from the Finsbury Park Mosque attack. Or your fears may be more local like the safety of children or the shortage of homes in our own city. But there is one thing that is not on that list and is not often spoken about and that is the fear of difference – difference in colour or race or religion, difference in ideas or even which team we support. And that fear of difference is at the root of so much of the violence and hatred, bigotry and persecution in this country and across the world. It is a big thing, far too big for me to deal with you may be thinking. How can I stop wars or terrorism happening? How can I possibly do anything that would make a difference? That last question actually

gives us the answer. Deal with the fear of difference by trying to make a difference. Do you know your neighbours? Could you help them with something they are struggling with or perhaps ask for their help? Could you get to know a bit more about their background and beliefs? Don’t look at the differences between you and your neighbour and live in fear but find ways of bridging the gaps and learn to live happily alongside one another. In the Christian faith “Love your neighbour as yourself” is one of the commandments Jesus gave us. And there are no doubt similar instructions in other faiths. If we can live in this way then at least the fear of difference can start to be removed. Don’t let fear win! Rev Jane Ashplant Fishponds Methodist Church

n NEWS FROM THE MAYOR

What can you do for our city? MUCH has happened since I last wrote for the Voice. The city has gone to the polls twice in two months. There has also been sad news with the attacks in Manchester and London, events that showed we must remain united – both against abhorrent acts of terror but also against any badly informed, kneejerk reaction in the form of hate crime or Islamophobia. It’s also been a busy time for the council. There’s been great progress on issues like housing and transport, with my new Congestion Task Group meeting for the first time this month. The election showed that people in the UK’s major cities reject austerity and the continuing failure of the government to properly fund public services or give us the right freedoms to look after ourselves. The effects of central cuts – past and present - are damaging local communities and I am renewing our case to the government. There is no doubt the general election has made it clear that people have had enough of austerity and we will be taking the message to government that cities are at breaking point. I’m also asking other major UK cities to join me in arguing for a fairer deal for cities.

We now have to make savings worth £33m this year and when Full Council set the budget in February we were looking down the barrel of a £104m gap between April 2017 and March 2022, a figure which could easily go up. We have to make incredibly hard decisions about services you might hold dear. And whilst I will take responsibility for that, I want those decisions to be informed by your ideas and views and for everyone to be part of the conversation. We also need to change our city culture. These are city challenges and we cannot consistently look to the city council to run everything, to provide everything, to resolve everything. Communities, voluntary sector organisations and charities all have key roles to play but the council alone cannot sustain them. We have just launched our ‘Your Neighbourhood’ consultations on a number of proposals for the future of libraries, public toilets, Neighbourhood Partnerships, school crossing patrols and services for adults with learning difficulties and dementia. We’re also looking at options for our ‘Supporting People’ services, which funds the work of many organisations which support all sorts of people

to live independently. The ideas put forward have been designed to give you choice and provide space for your ideas. They also ask what you can do to help your city and each other. I remain determined to deliver on our priorities and make this a more equal and inclusive city where no-one is left behind. That’s a challenge we all need to meet.

My fears over student flats

Frome Vale councillor Nicola Bowden-Jones speaks out against the growth of homes being converted to student accommodation, saying action is needed now before Fishponds reaches tipping point FISHPONDS is facing a major challenge. The area is only a walk away from the University of West of England, a university which is growing. While out in the area I am seeing more houses being converted to student accommodation. I am not anti-student, I have been one myself but Bristol has already seen in other parts of the city how the growth in student housing changes the nature of communities. The ABC (Action for Balanced Communities) group set up in Clifton has reported that too much

student housing leads to unsettled areas in the term time and abandoned areas in the vacations. This leads to a loss of family homes at a time when Bristol is suffering from a housing crisis and pressure on retailers unable to cope with the yo-yoing of demand. I feel that we need to act before parts of the area reach a tipping point with communities becoming unbalanced, families start to move out and the move to more HMOs

accelerates. We need planning rules for the area to restrict the conversion of much needed family homes into housing in multiple occupation (HMOs). I don’t want to exclude students, they add to the life and diversity of the area. However I do want to ensure that the nature of Fishponds does not change beyond recognition and that we protect the balanced community we currently have. Work has already started on reviewing the Bristol Local Plan or Core Strategy. I will be pushing for protection from the sub-division of homes within the area to create HMOs and the building of specialist student accommodation in the area. We do need more homes, however the focus of this should be on family housing, housing for older people and a good mix of social and affordable homes. Nicola Bowden-Jones

n MP COLUMN

Kerry McCarthy MP for Bristol East

writes for Fishponds Voice I WANT to start by saying a huge thank you to everyone who turned out to vote in the general election, and those who helped during the campaign. As always, regardless of how, or if, you voted, I am here to

27

We must honour public servants serve you and proud to represent everyone in Bristol East. The election campaign was punctuated by two horrific terror attacks: one at Manchester Arena and one on London Bridge/ Borough Market. Both shocked us, while underlining the bravery of our police and security services. Since then we have also had the attack on Muslims peacefully gathering for prayers at Finsbury Park mosque. Instead of driving us apart, as intended, these attacks have brought communities closer together, united against such hateful acts of terror. We have all been proud of our brave firefighters too, after the terrible fire at Grenfell Tower in west London. I recently attended a service on Firefighter’s Memorial Day at Temple Back station to pay tribute to all those who serve, and have nominated Fleur Lombard, the first female firefighter to die on duty during peace time, aged just 21, as a Great Westerner, which could see one of the trains in GWR’s

Wigs Bristol

new fleet named after her. Too often we don’t appreciate the work of public servants, like the police and firefighters, until their services are called upon in times of crisis. These recent events have shown how important it is to properly resource our frontline emergency services, and I will continue to campaign, locally and nationally, against the cuts to police numbers and our fire and rescue service. Grenfell also highlighted, tragically, the impact of austerity and the so-called ‘war on red tape’, with corners being cut by the council in cladding the building and enforcing fire regulations. I have sought reassurances that our high-rise buildings are better protected from fire risk, and have visited Butler House with Avon Fire and Rescue Service and the Mayor, Marvin Rees, to see for myself. There has also been no shortage of local news in recent weeks. The Planning Inspector has decided to allow McDonalds’

appeal for their plans to build a drive-thru restaurant at 541-551 Fishponds Road. Despite years of staunch, considered opposition by local residents – whom I have supported every step of the way, including by giving evidence at the hearing in April – the concerns around traffic, public health, and pollution have been overruled. I will of course continue to support local people wherever possible on this, and work closely with Marvin, our Mayor, and local councillors to seek a rule change to ban new fast food developments from opening within 800 metres of schools and youth centres.

Eye Blog . . . with Jonathan Best of Marian Blake Opticians

How are contact lenses made? A FEW weeks ago I had the privilege of attending Alcon’s Contact Lens Facility in Großwallstadt, just outside Frankfurt, Germany. Contact lenses have made life easier for millions of people worldwide ever since they've been able to be mass produced for public use. With such a widespread adoption of contact lenses, I wondered how manufacturers are able to make such a large quantity of precision contact lenses in such an efficient manner. I wasn’t disappointed. The facility is huge! It's important to remember that there are two primary varieties of contact lenses. The most popular variety of contact lens is the soft contact lens, traditionally made in disposable varieties. The other type of lens is the Rigid Gas Permeable lens, which uses a harder material for long-term use. The facility that I visited produces the soft contact lenses called DAILIES TOTAL1®, you may have started seeing their advert on tv! The Manufacturing Process for Contact Lenses The most popular and most cost efficient method to manufacture soft contact lenses in large quantities is through the use of injection molding. Injection molding is a very common and popular way to manufacture a wide variety of objects, and is used to create anything from action figures to medical devices such as contact lenses. Injection molding is particularly popular with plasticbased products. Injection molding for contact lenses is performed by heating the lens material to the point of melting, then injecting the liquid lens material into a pre-cut mold. Once the lens material dries, it will solidify in the form of the mold, giving precise shape to the lens. After the lens is removed, extra material may be removed, and the lens will be polished prior to being inspected for quality.

Injection molding is used only for soft contact lenses, as the process lacks the precision detail required to produce hard gas-permeable contact lenses. Materials Used For Soft Contacts These days, most soft lenses are made out of a material known as Hydrogel, a water absorbing polymer that uses the water content to transmit oxygen to the eye through the lens. Hydrogel lenses are usually graded on how much water they hold, with some lenses holding as high as 70% water. While water does increase oxygen permeability, it also increases the size of the lens, which may in turn cause increased discomfort. Less water typically results in a thinner lens. Silicone Hydrogel is an even newer type of lens material that has been developed for greater oxygen permeability while avoiding added bulk of larger lenses. Adding silicone to the hydrogel lens has shown to increase oxygen permeability by a significant amount, which many major lenses now make use of for added comfort. These were the lenses that I was viewing. DAILIES TOTAL1® contact lenses combine superior breathability and lasting lubricity and provide exceptional end-of-day comfort. They are The First Water Gradient Contact Lens featuring an increase from 33% to over 80% water content from core to surface. They provide the benefit of a silicone hydrogel in the core whilst giving you the comfort of a hydrogel at the surface! (Unfortunately I wasn’t allowed to take photos of the process for these lenses as it is patented!) If you have any questions contact lenses this summer, make an appointment with me. At Marian Blake Opticians we pride ourselves on giving a thorough personalised service and expert advice. Book now on 0117 9651861 today or book online at www. marianblake.co.uk

In response, it has committed to supporting the school formally from September 2017. It will provide leadership and specialist support both from within its own capacity and in collaboration with other partners, such as the Bristol Primary Teaching School Alliance. said: “We are very much looking forward to working with colleagues at Millpond. The work that has been ongoing at the school since January, under the interim leadership of Margaret Gwynne has clearly been having a large positive impact, setting the school up well for the new year. We’re really keen to support learners and work closely with the local community to secure Millpond Primary School as their school of choice.” The east Bristol primary academies of Begbrook, Minerva, Frome Vale and Summerhill are all part of Cabot Learning Federation along with two other primaries in South Gloucestershire and another in North Somerset.

n VET BLOG EVERY year the PDSA Animal Wellbeing report is produced to monitor pet welfare issues across the UK. The latest report contains worrying figures showing a steep decline in the number of owners vaccinating their pets. So why does this matter? Vaccination schemes rely on the majority of animals being protected, reducing the number of infected animals around, and providing a degree of herd immunity so that even unvaccinated animals are less likely to get ill. This can give a false sense that the diseases are no longer a

Protecting your pet problem. The latest report shows that a quarter of dogs, more than a third of cats, and half of rabbits have not had their first vaccination courses. The current vaccination levels in cats and rabbits are far below what is needed to provide this herd immunity, meaning the risk of catching infectious diseases will increase. Those who have owned dogs for a longer time may well remember the horrors of distemper in dogs, and vets still see too many cases of parvovirus infection and leptospirosis in our canine patients. When I first qualified, feline leukaemia virus was more widespread, because no vaccine was available, and it was heart breaking to see previously healthy young cats come to see us with incurable cancers caused by this

horrible virus. We can vaccinate against all these diseases and more. Please call us at Kingswood Vets4pets on 0117 9616417 if you would like to talk about getting your pet of any age vaccinated. We currently have a very good offer on our Best Start in Life package for kittens and puppies, which includes vaccinations, so please don’t let your pet be the one at risk.

n PLANNING Chris Gosling explains why the McDonald's verdict was no surprise THERE was no doubt what the planning topic would be this month, only doubts about whether the planning inspector could deliver a verdict in adequate time to meet the Fishponds Voice print deadline. The decision letter was duly published on June 15 and I wonder how many readers were surprised by its contents. For those who have had an ongoing interest in the McDonald's appeal at the tile warehouse on Fishponds Road, for instance the No Mac In F campaign group, the appeal decision at No. 668 Fishponds Road in January this year would have been foremost in their minds. This site, not that far from the McDonald's appeal site, was the subject of a planning application for change of use from a shop to a restaurant and hot food takeaway. While this is smaller in scale than a large drive-through facility, it was adequate to test the principle of such a change of use in a secondary shopping frontage. The tile warehouse is also in a secondary frontage, after all. Due to the high turnover of uses at No. 668, it was decided that a use would be better than a series of failed or struggling businesses and that appeal was allowed. The city council had refused the tile warehouse application not on the change of use per se, but on highway safety and the impact on nearby living conditions, both largely matters of judgement. I have no doubt that objecting to the proposed use in itself would have been a waste of effort, given that local policies do not go against it. I should stress that I did not attend the Inquiry and

these comments are based on the decision letter alone. When it comes to the roads, everybody tends to think that the ones in their area are over-used. The number of times that I have despaired waiting for a gap in the traffic to cross Fishponds Road brings me to the same conclusion. However, the Inspector noted that the traffic flow allowed gaps when vehicles could make a right turn and vehicle speeds were slow. This was shown in the traffic modelling evidence put forward by the appellants. Having effectively established that Fishponds Road is no better or worse than an arterial route in any city, the die was cast. Traffic generation figures were accepted from an equivalent facility in Bedminster. This meant that peak flows could be identified. When it was demonstrated that the junction would be improved as a result of the proposal, although delivery vehicles would trap customers' cars in their spaces occasionally, there was no head of steam left in this argument. This left the impact on living conditions and the Inspector found that there were intervening land uses; that noise had been taken account of in a survey and so this issue could appropriately be controlled through the use of conditions. Conditions are better than a refusal and therefore this argument also ran out of steam. The remaining matter was the health impact. The nearest school is over 400 metres away from the site, where the local policy set 400m as the exclusion zone for hot foot takeaways. McDonald's would have been well aware of this policy when purchasing the site. The link between fast food and obesity was always a long shot in planning terms and the inspector found that there was insufficient evidence

Gourmand Foods

put forward on these grounds. In the end, while fast food may be tempting, those selling it don't force you to part with your money. There is always a choice, even in a context of price-cutting. The decision letter was wellreasoned and as disappointing as you find it, this was the most likely result. The council did not have the strongest of refusal reasons (although they were not unreasonable ones to use) and the third parties had to hope for a miracle to set the agenda in a public inquiry. The one thing that McDonald's may not be counting on is the bad feeling that this process has left. It was a commercial decision to buy the site and attempt to obtain permission for a drive-through hot food takeaway. Similarly, customers make their own commercial decision every time they visit the site or not. I would imagine that there are at least 1600 petition signatories who have no intention of becoming the clientele of this establishment. McDonald's may have won the battle, but I suspect for many the war will go on. There was a similar battle over the Tesco

Planning matters

Chris Gosling convenience store in Stokes Croft a few years ago. It is still operating, but I doubt that the company would consider it any kind of 'flagship' store. People Power may not have convinced the inspector, it seldom does, but that does not diminish its potential.

Grand re-opening of The Old Tavern Blackberry Hill with Paul and Emma Myself and Emma from The New Moon have recently taken over The Old Tavern located on Blackberry Hill. Us and others have been putting in a lot of effort and hard work redecorating the place to make it our own and to give it a newer, improved look but to also give it our own touch. Our aim is to make people feel welcome and comfortable and for this to be a place to have fun. The main pub will be opening on the 1st of July 2017. We welcome everyone and are keen to meet new friends and happy faces. We will be embracing the live music scene although we are unsure on what days to select, we are hoping that

this will be a locals pub where they can enjoy the large beer garden, where we are sure we will have many BBQ’s and catch lots of sun. We also hope that it will be somewhere that people can go to enjoy a night out and become known and feel comfortable with the friendly bar staff. Our initial idea for the pub is to give it a fresh-faced style and re-open it for people to create many more lovely memories there and become a place where people can be happy and feel welcomed. We will be installing a new pool table along with quiz machines, fruit machines and a jukebox so that customers can choose the music of their era. We hope that anyone who has been here

before likes our improvements, but we are also keen to hear the locals requests. In the not too distant future we will be re-opening the cafe where you will be able to get a good old full English breakfast, including a bit of bubble and squeak. This will be open for lunch also which can be ordered from the bar. We would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to everyone that has helped us in the redecoration process and also in the general support and good comments that we are getting regarding the reopening of The Old Tavern. We are extremely grateful for all of the help you have given us. Myself, Emma and the rest

of the team look forward to sharing a cold beer with you and hearing any history or stories from previous nights in The Old Tavern!

THE first few weeks of being a parent to a newly born baby is a significant life-changing experience. The rhythms of life with a baby is a shock when people have been used to working in employment. We have numerous experts who practise locally in Fishponds who work with parents to support this transition through our highly skilled NHS postnatal services but also through organisations such as The Gentle Touch. Run by mothers Anna Mapson and Emma Haverson, The Gentle Touch runs everything from massage classes for babies and parents to nutritional support with weaning. They advertise themselves as pregnancy and postnatal experts and there have been hundreds of babies and parents who have benefited already from their wealth of experience. Based here in Fishponds, they can run classes in your home or in locally organised courses with groups of parents and carers. Anna and Emma started The Gentle Touch when their children were young and have gathered many positive experiences of supporting parents to develop their attachment through baby massage. Touch is the first sense to develop in babies and as such it is an important first experience to bond parent and baby. Popular all over the world, baby massage dates back centuries and has now become very popular in the UK. When we partook in their baby massage course, our daughter was twelve weeks old and the group of four babies being massaged ran in my home (a great relief to me at the time because I couldn’t seem to arrive on time to any appointment earlier than 11.00.) Our baby was very wriggly as Anna talked us through how to stroke and use oil to calm and touch our baby so it relaxed her. She used song and techniques to focus some quality time on touch. I had thought that we had had lots of focused time together as new mother and baby, but actually much of the initial time we spent together was taken up with me trying to diagnose my baby’s needs – wind, hunger, sleep or nappy? Baby massage allowed us some fixed time to just look at each other and use touch to make a sustained

Email: sales@fishpondsvoice.co.uk

connection. I was able to then use the techniques after bath time, before bedtime outside of the classes. This certainly enhanced and added to our attachment and connected us strongly early on. In fact, I still feel confident using these techniques to relax her now she is older. She is still very affectionate and we still enjoy this time being close. It sounds so simple but the massage practitioners are really experts at focusing you on quality time with your child. My group brought different of worries about their babies and Anna shared her experience and wisdom of how to overcome them or just accept them as a ‘normal’ and expected part of being a parent. She uses massage intuitively to help reduce anxiety both in parents but also in babies’ wind, colic or sleep issues. As a new parent I had many anxieties about doing things the ‘right way’ or trying to do things I was ‘supposed’ to do, as well as sifting through the barrage of ‘advice’ from family and friends about what I was ‘meant’ to do. Baby massage was helpful in gradually relaxing into parenthood or creating quality time for a new child into a busy family. Unlike cranial osteopathy or other treatments that might help your child, massage works on the connection between the two or three of you and creates intimacy very quickly. Between Anna and Emma they deliver courses across Bristol in Southville, Bishopston, Clifton and Fishponds including Baby Massage & Baby Yoga courses, Weaning Classes and 1-1 Nutrition consultations (Fertility, Pregnancy, Postnatal or Family) consultations. They offer private courses in your home for Baby Massage and Baby Weaning, and their nutrition consultations can be in your home too. nCULTURAL FIX with Anna Blightman

Are you ready for six impossible things before breakfast?

OOH, it’s hot at the moment. I only hope that by the time this column is read it is still sunny and warm. Although things can change (as they often do) and the anticipation of change always feels a little bit magical. Without getting too political, the landscape has been left rather uncertain, unclear and, to be honest, a little bewildering. But this can be exciting too as we look around at what we have that inspires us, moves us to do things, helps us to create the spark, even when it’s too sticky to sleep! We have a new show opening at the Kingfisher. Zoe Gibbons, a mixed media artist, is showing a collection of artwork inspired by Alice in Wonderland. Her work evokes feelings of nostalgia, childhood and magic, being able to escape into a fantasy world from

which it is hard to leave! Her show, entitled “Six Impossible Things Before Breakfast - Would you like an adventure now, or shall we have tea first?” features rabbits, caterpillars and magic vials in textile and embroidered artwork. Set in some local landscapes using a range of materials, including old billboard posters from an advertising board on the cycle path. Zoe lives locally and works from a studio in central Bristol. This is her first exhibition this year. She sells a range or artwork, cards and gifts through local independent shops and online through her own website and notonthehighstreet. com Zoe’s show opens on Thursday July 13 and will run for two months. • THE summer event that happened in September last year, you know,

the big one in Fishponds Park with music, food, fun stuff for the whole family - IT’S BACK! Entitled Party In The Ponds, the same team are on board to create another amazing day on September 9. Organisers are currently looking for volunteers, stall holders, bands, entertainers and anyone who’d like to generally help out. Please get in touch with the team if you would like to be involved in anyway. We have our own beautiful world of magic here in Fishponds. If you want nature, we have it; a micro pub trading (mostly) local brews, we have it; book clubs, yoga classes, farmers market, tick, tick, tick. It’s all here for the taking, you just need to look. After all, “those who don’t believe in magic will never find it”. Party In The Ponds

Chelsea - the greatest show on earth A MONTH after everyone else has pontificated about the great horticultural circus that rolls into the Royal Chelsea Hospital each year, I finally get to pen some words about my own visit. I’m not sure where to begin as the whole affair was quite overwhelming, from the exquisitely presented show gardens to the two acres of the Great Pavilion. As usual there were a series of main gardens that are designed and curated by some of the country's leading garden designers, these have a huge amount of time and money given to them as they are all vying for a gold medal and the crown that is ‘best in show’. This is very apparent when you get to see them in person as there is not a leaf out of place and the ability to recreate a Maltese quarry in Central London is incredible. There is the joke about not leaving an inch of bare soil visible in a Chelsea

show garden but you can see the dramatic effect this has, albeit in ephemeral gardens, maybe something that's less achievable in a domestic setting. To my surprise there were not only the main show gardens but over a dozen others in the Artisan Gardens, the Fresh Gardens and this year a series celebrating 50 years of Radio 2, this is where I started my tour. The first thing that I came across, was a phalanx of camera crews and presenters filming the proprietors of the aforementioned gardens and it gave me a real insight into the kudos that anything Chelsea related can offer. It is awe inspiring to see what it is possible to produce by the 22nd of May and to present it in such exquisite fashion as these plots had done. If

you’ve ever thought of harvesting a tomato or having peas and cauliflower on the same menu that month then you may want to take a lesson from there. It’s a magnet for the invited celebrities and I’m sure many more are invited than come, but apart from the journalists there were many faces that I recognised, and from conversations I have at work, I know relatively few. I have to admit to being slightly star struck when having my lunch sat next to Judi Dench. Among the growers there were many that caught my eye, some for the sheer abundance and some for the skill in creating environments that just drew you into a small fantasy world, and one because they had 150 different varieties of potato. interest in growing vegetables you would have been in awe as this was just a small sample of the 500 that they grow in Scotland. There is a certain pleasure that is derived from collecting and I can see over the years how a collection like this could be amassed, but the sheer dedication that it must take to maintain all of the plants is incredible. Unfortunately I was told that due to the complexities of getting them certified for sale as seed potatoes you’ll be unable to buy a Pentland Crown or a Vales Emerald anywhere soon. This year there were many fewer main gardens than there have been in the past, 10 in total compared to 17 last year. This is I’m sure to do with a change in sponsorship priorities but one thing I know is that we won’t be hearing Joe Swift saying ‘sponsored by M&G investments’ next year. I don’t know if there is a change in attitude towards this type of affair or whether there is an air of austerity among the usual sponsors but I do hope that it doesn’t detract from the spectacle in any way, as when it comes to garden design and horticulture in general, this really is the greatest show on earth.

n PROPS COLUMN

Singing, growing, cycling

WE have had a busy month. Our growing spaces have been exploding with herbs and vegetables, as well as plenty of weeds! We have been working hard to keep on top of the unwanted weeds and maintaining our plots. Our accessible allotment has been jazzed up with our colourful bunting, and we have plans to spruce up the shed and do a spot of painting too. Making it vibrant and enticing really helps us to enjoy our time there. In this hot weather, we have all had to make sure we keep ourselves, and our plants well hydrated. Back at the PROPS polytunnel, we have an abundance of lettuces and tomatoes, and a wide variety of other plants. Our pop-up stall has done a great job of selling our plants and produce to the local community. On election day, the Vassall Centre (where we are based) was a polling station, and many people came to buy plants from us. PROPS will be holding three stalls and a

games room at the Vassall Centre Summer Fayre on Wednesday July 26 from 11-2pm, along with many other stalls and activities. Everybody is welcome, we look forward to seeing you there! Training is stepping up for our four students who are taking part in the Bristol2Bordeaux cycle challenge. They are going out on training rides twice a week, as well as using our static bikes back at the centre. The PROPS print workshop has also been kept busier than usual preparing everything for the bike ride. They have been heat-pressing logos on to bags and t-shirts, printing out maps and signs

and much more. In next month’s column, we will be able to tell you all about their adventures. Some of our students are members of the Bristol Umbrella Singers – a choir for people with learning difficulties, which rehearse weekly in Eastville. The choir had its first ever public performance at the Learning Difficulties Celebration Day which was held at the Trinity Centre in Old Market. The event was really well-attended, and had a lovely, positive atmosphere. The choir performed five rehearsed songs, and one unexpected encore! Thank you to all our supporters who came along to celebrate this achievement. A group of students has been taking part in a raking and

baking course at St Werburgh’s Community Centre, where they have been learning to cook lots of exciting new recipes, some using ingredients from the community garden that they have helped to maintain. From curries to courgette cake, this has been an enjoyable experience for everyone. We have enjoyed meeting new people and preparing the meals, as well as eating them of course! To find out more about PROPS, or to get in touch, visit www. propsbristol.org, email info@ propsbristol.co.uk or call 0117 965 3514.

n ON THE TREATMENT TABLE

with Tim Button, Doctor of Chiropractic at Cleve Chiropractic and Next Step in Mangotsfield

Blog 40 – ART and the IAAF World Championships! IT’S 6.34am on a sunny Saturday and I’m sitting on a desolate train, on my way to London to attend a training event for the IAAF World Championships that are being held this summer in London. It reminds me of the training and build-up to the London 2012 Olympics. There will be lots of people and excitement and a group of people, most of whom don’t know each other, all getting together for a common goal, to help at and enjoy this massive world event. I will be joined by the other chiropractors that have be selected for the honour of working at such a prestigious event. Selection for the Championships was tough and only seven or eight chiropractors made it to cover both the World Paraathletic Championships and the IAAF World Champs. I’ve been selected to do the IAAF Championships in August after the Paras. I’m pleased that the Paras are on first this time, before the IAAFs. The UK supports its Para athletes

as well as anywhere in the world and putting on the event first before the able-bodied event is a testament to the UK’s commitment to disability sport. As many of you who have read my previous blogs know, I have done a lot of work in disability sports and worked with the GB Paralympic teams for both London and Rio. I wish all my friends and patients in the Paras luck this summer. I also work for athletes that will be competing in the IAAFs so I am looking forward to being involved and working behind the scenes as a chiropractor in this one-off UK event. I am sure in a couple of months’ time I will be writing all about it! It’s now 7am exactly and we have just stopped at the beautiful city of roundabouts, Swindon, and the train is getting a little bit busier including a very interesting looking couple carrying their folded bicycles down the train still wearing their helmets, hi-vis and looking far too hot and bothered for this time of the morning. Earlier in the month, before I found myself on this journey to London, I managed a few quiet nights away in Dubai to help

to treat achilles, knees and ankle sprains! Anyway, I still passed with flying colours and am now proud to be the only ART practioner in the south west of England and the whole of Wales. I plan on helping my new chiropractic Associates become qualified in ART as well helping us maintain our status as world class sports injury clinic. After stopping in Reading at 7:24am the train is finally beginning to fill up as we approach London Paddington. I can almost feel the great City waking up ready to welcome more guests of all varieties and I wonder what the day has in store for me as I head towards the Olympic Stadium for our training day. I am sure I will meet some fun people with interesting stories of their own. I’ve said it before but I can’t help saying it again…I love my job.

celebrate my friend and Bristol Rovers player, Lee Brown, marry his childhood sweetheart, Sophie. It was a lovely time, if not a little hot, hitting 42 degrees Celsius at times. The locals say that it’s on its way to 55! Only a week after I arrived home from Dubai, I went on a four-day course held in Bristol to increase my skillset. The course was excitingly called “Active Release Techniques (ART) of the Lower Limb” and is the final of three courses (Upper Limb and Spine) that has taken me round the world and four years to complete making me full bodied certified. ART is the gold standard of soft tissue techniques and adds so much to any practioners skillset. You cannot work on the PGA pro tour without being ART qualified. The standards to pass are formidable as you need to re-qualify every year and I had the joy of taking an exam on the final day. This exam made slightly tougher by, instead of studying for the exam all Saturday night like everybody else was, I went to my wife’s best friend’s wedding at the Bristol Lido, which was lovely but I couldn’t help thinking about how
