Residents set for new battle over Oldbury Court parking PEOPLE living around Oldbury Court Estate are preparing for battle as plans to bring in car parking charges are being explored again. Cash-strapped Bristol City Council is considering introducing charges at the car

park to the beauty spot and play area to raise revenue from parks in the city to counter the authority's well-publicised budget shortfalls. But residents are concerned that visitors will park along the narrow roads surrounding the

estate rather than fork out for parking charges. They also argue that they will find it difficult to park near their homes as visitors flock to the green space in their droves, particularly in the summer. Turn to Page 2

n NEWS From Page 1 A further fear is that the council will introduce double yellow lines in neighbouring roads to encourage drivers to use the car park, which would mean people living locally could no longer park outside their homes. The council has toyed with the idea previously but proposals have not been followed through. This time, however, the authority is under increasing pressure to balance the books. Resident Stuart Main said even on cold winter weekdays more than 80 cars come and go from the car park, with numbers

Oldbury Court parking charges threat rising to more than 250 in summer. "Imposing charges at Oldbury Court Estate will simply move parked cars from the existing car park into local streets, including Perrymans Close, Oldbury Court Drive, Oldbury Court Road, St Matthias Road and parts of Gill Avenue. As a result, already narrow roads will be reduced to single lanes from dawn to dusk, seven days a week, all year round. "This excessive parking will

greatly increase the likelihood of roads and driveways being obstructed and make access by car to the park itself more difficult. Some residents will find that they can no longer park anywhere near their properties." Mr Main said ambulances, delivery lorries and support vehicles such as carers' cars will find access more difficult and, at busy times, impossible. "It’s a very serious issue when you, a delivery or an ambulance cannot get anywhere near your

"Since plenty of free parking is available within one minute's walk of Oldbury Court Estate, it is obvious that the current proposal for charging for parking is unrealistic and highly problematic. If the council is intent on charging then this proposal needs to be completely rethought to take into account the genuine concerns of local residents and park users. n NEWS consultation before any final decisions are taken." Chris Rowbury, who also lives nearby, said the council may introduce double yellow lines to 'persuade' visitors to park in the chargeable car park. "The inevitable result will be unhappy residents, gridlock at weekends and holidays and mere congestion at all other times," he said."I know that in the past an ambulance has been unable to get through carelessly parked cars and a suite of furniture was carried the length of my road - and it can only get worse. The area barely copes now but with parking restrictions and proposals for large events it will be un-liveable. "Will Bristol City Council not consider that Oldbury Court is unsuitable for their money raising plans? It is radically different from other parks in that it is accessed through narrow residential streets, has inadequate and often closed car parks, and no handy bus links. "There is no simple solution without significant cost which renders the present plan

unworkable." A council spokeswoman said: "We will shortly be undertaking public engagement on the proposals for a new Traffic Regulation Order (TRO), which will incorporate the planned car parking charges as well as new waiting restrictions outside of the estate on the surrounding road network. "Local residents will receive a letter drop with the proposals, we hope that this will take place in the next few weeks. These proposals will also be hosted on the council’s Consultation Hub for residents and stakeholders to view. "This public engagement will be aimed at those immediately affected by the new TRO and will last approximately two weeks. "The feedback from this engagement will be considered and any necessary amendments that will enable the scheme to be implemented will be – this will then be communicated to all residents. We t ook the decision to introduce parking charges to help us protect frontline services across the city."

4.99% increase in council tax BRISTOL City Council, like most around the country, has set a budget for the coming year in which residents will pay more for fewer services. The council has agreed a 4.99 per cent increase in council tax for 2018/19, which includes a 2 per cent levy for essential adult social care services. It means people living in a Band D property will pay an extra £7.61 a month from April 1, once additional levies for police and fire services are added. The increase will bring in an additional £9.7m to the council next year, but this will not be enough to offset wage increases and other costs and reductions in government funding. The budget therefore includes a total of £34.5m annual savings. Having already made more than £200m of savings since 2010, the council needs to save a further £108m by April 2023. Deputy Mayor and Hillfields Councillor Craig Cheney said the Labour-run authority had worked extremely hard to limit the impact on council tax payers and had not brought in the maximum permitted rise. "I am pleased full council has approved a budget that focuses on minimising the impact on essential frontline services," he said. Councillors also agreed a refreshed Corporate Strategy, which sets out how the vision for Bristol as a city of hope and ambition and outlines how the council’s role will change from being the main provider of services to collaborating with partners across the city.

Police give brave Stuart a day to remember PC PAUL Fortune put smiles on the faces of five-year-old twins Stuart and Jamie Harding when he gave them a tour of Staple Hill police station and a look inside a police car. PC Paul met Stuart, who is being treated for leukaemia, at a coffee morning at Mangotsfield CofE primary school in January. Mum Alison said: “Stuart was so chuffed to to meet PC Paul and to try on his hat.” The neighbourhood constable arranged the police station visit for February half term, when both boys were delighted to receive personal epaulettes made especially for them. “This was one of the many items on Stuart’s ‘to do list’, and we are so appreciative to PC Paul and his team for making it happen”, Alison said. PC Fortune said: “It was a pleasure to meet Stuart, who is one of the bravest people I have ever met.” Stuart was taken ill in October

Chris, who also have a three-yearold daughter Eilidh, are raising money for three blood cancer charities – Bloodwise, DKMS and Anthony Nolan. Alison said: “It’s been a really hard time for us as a family, so we took up running in July 2017 in order to try and find something positive that we could aim for together. We wanted to raise funds, as well as raise awareness of childhood cancer and what these kids have to go through.

“Anything that we can do to help will be an amazing thing, not just for Stuart but for all the other families in the same situation too.” The family, who moved to Emersons Green in January last year, are doing a virtual run from their former home in Elgin, Scotland, to Royal Aberdeen Hospital, and finally to Bristol Children’s Hospital, covering 570 miles. Jamie, Eilidh and Stuart (when he is well enough) take part in junior parkruns while their parents do their miles with Emersons Green Running Club. The family have been recording their runs on Map My Run and have recently crossed the border into England at the halfway point, with just over £12,000 raised so far. n NEWS Lace for the lady Lord Mayor

BRISTOL’S Lord Mayor Lesley Alexander is looking even more spendid these days thanks to a new lace jabot made in her home patch. Councillor Alexander, who represents represents the Frome Vale ward on Bristol City Council, visited the Bristol Lace Group at the Vassall Centre to receive the addition to her regalia.

The jabot has been made by seven members of the group after one of its members, Evelyn Smith, discovered that our city’s Lord Mayors have only had a machine jabot to wear for their year in office. As an experienced lace maker and lace teacher, Evelyn thought that this would be an ideal opportunity for the BLG to promote lace and provide a lasting gift to the city of

Bristol. With the support of members she designed a Torchon style lace jabot that could be made and presented while Councillor Alexander was still in office. Excluding the design, preparation and making up, the lace itself took over 400 hours to make. The group’s chairwoman Marion Dumbell handed over the jabot at the group’s monthly meeting.

Diversity at People's Uni ... Reading aloud brings benefits THE People’s University brought a bit of glitter to a grey February Fishponds, in a collaboration with Drag Queen Story Time. Drag Queen ‘Sally Savage’ - complete with sequinned heels, dress, tiara and a glittery beard - read Dr Seuss and other popular tales to a packed Old Library of families, including more than a few children in similar fancy dress. Drag Queen Story time was set up in Bristol by student Tom Canham, and has become a national phenomenon since taking Bristol Pride by storm in 2017. ‘Sally’ was a big hit with children and parents alike. Organiser Kate Brooks said: “It might not be everybody’s cup of tea, but we were very pleased DQST could come to Fishponds. Children love dressing up, before they start to get self conscious about what are ‘boys’ clothes and ‘girls’ clothes so this was a fun way of celebrating how such restrictions can be playfully challenged. Children aren’t born prejudiced - in fact one little girl was adamant that next time, Sally should ‘look more like Elsa from Frozen! It was a lovely, inclusive and positive event and we were honoured be part of DQST’s campaign.” • The People’s University is planning another diverse series of events, including talks on owls, unusual musical instruments, a poetry slam and a visit from the UK hub for animation and puppetry: The Puppet Place, as well as a talk from Voice horticultural expert Tim The City Gardener Barton! For info see: www.peoplesuniversityoffishponds.

CHILDREN in Fishponds schools have joined in a national initiative to read aloud with celebrities and dignitaries. Sports stars, authors and others have been involved, including the Lord Mayor of Bristol Lesley Alexander, who dropped in to Begbrook Primary Academy. The children partipating in Read Aloud have taken part in the Reading Recovery programme, which involves a series of one-to-one, tailored daily 30-minute lesson with a specially trained teacher. The programme has enjoyed great success in Bristol with thousands of local children already having benefited. Eight out of ten children who take part in Reading Recovery catch up with their classmates within

six months. Councillor Anna Keen, cabinet member for education and skills, said: “Not being able to read at a certain level means children can fall behind at an early stage. Reading aloud with children is a tried and tested method for improving children’s abilities and motivating them to learn the basic skills needed.” Research has shown that more than 80 per cent of six year olds who completed Reading Recovery progressed from being the lowest achievers in their class to catching up with their peers. Key Stage Two reading tests for 11 year olds showed that Reading Recovery children had maintained progress and achieved average reading test results for their age.

n LETTER I take my hat off to Jacob Rees-Mogg

Principal Laurie Munro and Vice Principal Becca Hine with pupils at Begbrook Primary Academy

Begbrook is a Good school - Ofsted STAFF, children, governors and parents at Begbrook Primary Academy are celebrating another Good Ofsted report. Inspectors visited the school in Stapleton in February and said the leadership team had maintained the good quality of education in the school since their last visit. They praised the principal Laurie Munro and his team for being “ambitious for pupils and committed to developing excellence” and noted that achievement overall was good across the school. “Pupils enjoy school; attendance is above the national average and continues to improve. The majority of parents and carers are very pleased with the continuing good-quality

education,” their report said. “Parents of children in the Reception classes were pleased that their children are expected to talk to each other and try to sort problems out before asking a teacher. Older pupils are increasingly able to discuss their learning and therefore identify what they need to develop next. A typical comment was, ‘I know that I must work hard and not give up if I want to do well.’” The inspectors went on to say that the school was well governed and the Cabot Learning Federation supported the improvements being made. Mr Munro said, “We are extremely proud and pleased with this Ofsted report and feel it is a fair reflection of everything we have implemented. The

report recognises that we have introduced a number of new initiatives, which are still in an early stage of development and that the impact of these is yet to be felt. However, the inspection feedback clearly validates that we have developed the right strategies to move the academy forward for the benefit of our pupils and the local community that we serve.” Steve Taylor, chief executive of the CLF, said: “I would like to congratulate and thank all of the staff at Begbrook for the positive outcome, and for the work that has gone into creating, sustaining and improving the excellent learning environment for children at Begbrook Academy.”

A TIP of the top hat to Jacob Rees Mogg, MP, for confronting hooded hecklers at a recent talk he gave at University of the West of England (UWE), part of which campus is located in the Fishponds/Stapleton area. As a parliamentarian he is entirely at home dealing with the cut and thrust of vigorous debate. Heckling from opposition benches and sometimes even from his own party is a commonplace for him. The UWE experience was, therefore, water off a duck's back; a point that he himself made clear in a later interview with local television. Most importantly we must applaud him as a champion for freedom of speech. It was a hard fought for freedom which too many minority interests in this country today seek to erode and stifle, law makers and law enforcers among them. For myself I am generally in accord with his views on most issues. His recent condemnation of unsalted butter and his call for Brexit cash to be given to the NHS were merely uncharacteristic lapses of good sense on his part. Dr Stephen Buston Stapleton

WHEN dad Nik Whiteside decided to embark on one of the toughest challenges in the world he wanted to keep it quiet. But sons, Jacob, aged eight, and Joe, aged six, had other ideas. The duo took to social media to contact Downend Voice to let us know exactly what their intrepid dad was up to to raise money for Christchurch infant and junior schools where they go to school. For Nik, 46, will take on the Marathon des Sables (MdS), a gruelling six-day race through the Sahara Desert, running 156 miles in temperatures as high as 50 centigrade. Jacob and Joe, who have been training with their dad, are so proud of what he is doing for their schools they wanted to spread the word. Via Downend Voice's Facebook page, they told us: "Our Daddy is running in the desert in April to raise money for cool playground things for us to play on. The playgrounds are very muddy and a bit sad at the moment. We have been chatting to the headteachers about Wigwams balance beams, monkey bars, hopscotch and lots of fun things. We love playtime with our friends." Their message went on to say: "Maybe you could put a picture in your magazine and help us raise our target?? We would sooooooo like to be in Downend Voice." The lads went on to spill the beans good and proper, telling us their dad has a toy camel called Carlos who will be running with him. Nik said: "I must admit, I wanted to quietly do the MdS and that would be it. My wife however quite rightly pointed out it was a great opportunity to try to raise funds for Christchurch schools. They are in much need of new outdoor equipment and at a time when government grants and funds seem to be cut, it seemed a great idea." Mum Ruthie Carstairs said: "They said to me 'Mum, we should contact the paper!' The boys are just really proud of their daddy." The "Marathon of the Sands" first started in 1986 with just

Email: sales@fishpondsvoice.co.uk

186 competitors: 32 years later the race now attracts more than 1,000 runners, 200 members of the media and a support team of at least 400. The race starts on April 8 just outside Morocco and runs a course of more than 150 miles through the Sahara Desert over tough terrain. Each day, competitors will run a set amount of kilometres, averaging one to two marathons per day and carrying their water and everything they need on their back. Nik has been in training for 18 months, both in the UK and the Canary Islands to get used to running in high temperatures and on rough ground and sand. "You have to carry everything you need for the week except a tent and water which you get at checkpoints each day," Nik said. Nik's chosen fundraising activity seems all the more surprising because he is not a keen runner, and is neither a fan of sand or the heat. "I wouldn’t class myself as a runner at all; it’s not my favourite activity. I think of myself as more like the fat rhino at the back of the animal stampede in the film Jumanji. "So I started out short distances, looked at completing 10kms at first then slowly increased the distances until I managed to complete the Bristol to Bath marathon a couple of years back. I found the actual event hard and struggled, the last 10k were just painful but it was my first challenge so I was happy with a 4 hour 35 minute finish. I couldn’t walk properly for a week."

Carlos the camel, of course! Boys backing Nik all the way on desert run to help school Nik heard about the MdS from friends and remembered seeing it on the Discovery Channel many years ago. "It was so far out of my reach though. I thought only proper athletes and elite runners took part." It wasn't until two friends signed up and successfully completed it that Nik became interested: "I was hooked. I wanted in but I felt very out of my depth given that I struggled at the marathon. I don’t like sand, I’m not very good in heat, and I don’t much like running!" Not being one to give up easily Nik set about increasing the length of his training runs and even went over to Club La Santa in Lanzarote to a specific training camp run by an expert team of coaches where he covered 186km in six days. "I was pretty fried by the end but had achieved my aims, tested my kit and given myself a massive confidence boost. I’m now up to 2,500 kms in training runs since signing up to MdS." Nik, who has already raised more than half of his £4,000 target, said he was confident he would complete it. "There are things that are out of my control but I’m very positive. I looked at the MdS because of what it is, for me it’s the hardest thing I can attempt. I want see how I react and deal with the harsh conditions and the challenge. I believe I can do it. I’m under no illusion,

it’s going to be hard and I’m probably going to come home with a pair of ruined feet but to me it’s worth it. "The Just Giving page is doing really well and I’m overwhelmed by the response. There have been so many donations by people I don’t even know so a huge thank you to everyone." Funds have been boosted by a quiz night organised by Ruthie and pupils at the Christchurch schools will be taking part in sponsored assault courses. Ruthie said she understood why Nik wanted to take on such a tough challenge. "It's crazy but cool! He's 46 and wanted a big challenge for himself. "He wanted to do the MdS a few years ago but thought the children were too little. He was upset he didn't do it but this year thought 'Yes - let's go for it!' He really doesn't like the sun or the sand or even running that much so it really is a big challenge." Nik said he is also motivated because he wants to show Jacob and Joe that all things are possible if you put the work in. He said: "Maybe my two young sons don’t fully comprehend the scale of the event at the moment, but I hope one day they will take something from it and understand that nothing is impossible if you work hard and keep plugging away, even when it’s a struggle." Hats, Undies, Gloves, Socks (HUGS) for homeless PUPILS from Gracefield School collected HUGS for the homeless in a campaign to provide Hats, Underwear, Gloves and Socks which were distributed via the Salvation Army. The children from the Overndale Road school handed over their bag of HUGS at a special assembly attended by Captain Michael Allen from the Salvation Army. Captain Allen told the children all about the work of the Logos House Salvation Army Lifehouse, a hostel in central Bristol, where the bags were distributed. He explained the plight of the homeless people that they help at Logos House and about one man who cried when he received a hat given to the hostel, saying "Somebody remembered me". Headteacher Elizabeth Morgan said: "We were delighted to be able to help such a worthy cause.

Taking part in the Chalk Challenge PUPILS at May Park Primary School are using their artistic skills to highlight the benefits of a scheme which encourages children to play outside. The youngsters are taking part in a Chalk Challenge and have been asked to take a photo of a chalk drawing they have created on the path or pavement of the street they live in. The competition is being run by Playing Out, an initiative which started in Bristol but has spread nationwide. It aims to improve children's well being and build friendlier and stronger communities by organising road closures that allow children to play in the street. The school is already heavily involved in encouraging children to make healthy choices and has an Active Travel Scheme to promote travelling to school by foot and scooter. Jo Chesterman, Playing Out

activator, said: "I approached the school and met with Alex Moore, the Active Travel Champion, and we agreed that running a Chalk Challenge would be a great event, as chalking in the street is one of the favourite activities which happen in streets that have Playing Out sessions. "Pupils have been invited, over a 10 day period, to take a piece of pavement chalk home, draw a picture in their street and email it to me. Six winners will be chosen at the end and will get a prize of a big tub of chalk." Jo added that the chalk drawings will quickly be washed away as soon as it rains. Winning photos will be put on Playing Out’s website, Facebook page and published in Fishponds Voice. The Chalk Challenge runs until March 9. Playing Out is also teaming up with Chester Park Junior School to co-host an event called ‘Stay and Play, the CPJ Way’

- an after-school outdoor play event which has the backing of headteacher Mike McNama. Families are being encouraged to bring snacks, a picnic blanket and lots of energy to enjoy chalking, skipping, giant bubbles and a giant Connect 4 game. The entrance to the school

and connecting playground will be enjoyed as one big play area during the event, which takes place for one hour after school on March 15. To find out more about Playing Out call 07811 816620 or email Jo@playingout.net or visit www.playingout.net

n NEWS FROM THE MAYOR

Start at last on campus site EXCITING news now that work has started on the demolition of the former Royal Mail sorting office next to Temple Meads, which has long been an eyesore at the gateway of our city. Contractors will spend the next three or four months making the site ready for demolition in early summer. This is to make way for the new University of Bristol Enterprise Campus, which will be one of the landmark developments in the regeneration of the Temple Quarter district I also welcomed the announcement in February that we had been successful in two bids for funding for housing delivery in Southmead and Lockleaze, as part of the Government’s housing infrastructure fund. Bristol faces a huge demand for homes, so I am delighted that the Government has recognised this. The funding will play a part in helping us meet our ambitious target to deliver 2,000 new homes, including 800 affordable homes, per year by 2020. This £9.686 million investment will facilitate more than 1,000 new homes. We’ve managed to secure funding of £6.686m for the Unlocking Lockleaze Development project. This investment in sustainable transport infrastructure will support the delivery of

more than 800 new homes, helping us to create communities and not just houses. A further £3m will go to proposed Arnside and Glencoyne Square Regeneration. This funding will help build 300 new homes and provide improvements to the shopping area, green spaces and drainage systems. Bristol is benefiting from significant investment in its landscape and infrastructure. Even though in the long run this will have a positive impact on our communities, these ambitious plans can cause short term inconvenience. Unfortunately it is inevitable we will need roadworks to make these changes, so we have launched a new campaign to help ease the frustrations across the city. The Active Roadworks scheme will give people access to up-to-date information about roadworks. This new campaign is all about working together with utility companies to minimise disruption and frustration where we can. We want to make it easier to find more information about closures or roadworks on social media and elsewhere, so you know why you are diverted from your usual journeys. Our annual Homelessness Awareness Week from February 24-March 3 helps to raise

Cath's on a mission - to help us IT'S one of the hottest topics in the country today. In fact, it's so emotive that the Church of England has waded in to have its say. Even the BBC are getting involved. And it's said the Queen is taking an interest. It's not Brexit, equal pay or the UK's economy but the issue of singleuse plastics. Single-use plastics are products that are used once and then discarded, such as water bottles, plastic cups, straws, take-away coffee cups, stirrers and most food packaging. Whether our plastic waste ends up in landfill, our countryside, our streets, our beaches or the sea, it can have a catastrophic effect on our wildlife, birds and marine life. After the BBC's Blue Plant II highlighted the scale of sea pollution caused by single-use plastics, the public outcry caused the organisation to announce it would ban their use by 2020.

The Queen is supporting efforts to reduce single-use plastics on royal estates and the Church of England has urged Christians to give them up during Lent. But, as individuals, can we really do our bit to tackle such a massive environmental threat? One Fishponds woman believes we can. Cath Moore felt so strongly about what we are doing to our planet that she made it her mission to replace single-use plastics in her home. Inspired by many of the products she discovered, Cath has just launched a website www.theplasticfreeshop.co.uk - after spending the past year sourcing ethical and sustainable alternatives to everyday singleuse plastic items, such as toothbrushes, utensils and lunch boxes. "The products at The Plastic Free Shop are a result of my own journey and quest to have a life

with less plastic," Cath said. "People can be assured that I've done my research and tested the products. I try to be as open as possible and give a good description of each product." The 54-year-old operates the business from her home in Brook Road, even offering local people the chance to collect items from her at pre-arranged times to cut down on packaging costs and waste. Clearly, single-use plastics is a subject Cath feels passionate about. "My brother is a conservation photographer and does a lot of work with the Oceanic Society and the Plastic Pollution Coalition and went off on a think tank with scientists and conservationists. He came back with a film and when I watched it, I felt really emotional. I then went to the premier of the Plastic Ocean in Bristol and it blew me away. It was a real shock to my system and I thought I need to do something." Cath started by making small changes: "As a family, we've always been environmentally friendly and aware of wildlife but there was so much more I could do as an individual. I'd never felt this fired up about anything before. "I just started looking around me and started to make simple changes. One of the first things I replaced was my toothbrush.

It’s a truly frightening reality that every toothbrush ever made still exists somewhere on our planet. Just think of all those toothbrushes you have ever used and disposed of – they are still there!" Cath switched to a bamboo toothbrush, a natural product which is easy to grow without pesticides and as an added bonus the plant needs hardly any water to grow. "Even a scourer which has a sponge bottom and a green top doesn't biodegrade. It's full of plastic. I looked around and found products which are brilliant. They're so old school and simple but they work better and are compostable." Cath, a former cartographer, went on to replace her plastic water bottle with a stainless steel one and has now discovered there are free refilling stations cropping up everywhere and even several cafes in Fishponds are offering this service. Her shampoo bottle has been replaced by a shampoo bar: "It takes your hair a while to get used to but after a while it becomes really soft and shiny because you're not stripping it of any oils. I wouldn't go back now. I love it. "It's easier than you may think to make simple changes to daily habits and around the home which will reduce the amount of plastic and waste."

How you can do your bit IT can be overwhelming to take on board this monumental issue and wonder how on earth, as an individual, you can make a difference. The truth is that making small changes over time really does add up, especially when you consider there are lots of other like-minded people making changes too. Most single-use plastic items are simply not essential and are just there to serve our need for convenience in this modern world. One of the biggest impacts we can have as an individual is to refuse single-use plastics. These are all products we use

ourselves as a family. It is difficult to pick my favourites but my top five easy changes to start with would be: • Stainless steel reusable water bottle - will last forever and doesn’t taint flavours. Easier to find places to refill now too with the fantastic refill scheme rolled out in Bristol and now nationwide https://www.refill. org.uk/ • Cotton, gauze and net produce bags – ditch the need for those plastic pull off bags in the supermarket. These are perfect to take to the local farmers market too, or for many uses

all cut back on use of plastics It hasn't however been easy to source products for her website that Cath feels are the real deal. Anything which arrived at Brook Road bathed in unnecessary packaging was immediately rejected. "It's taken quite a time to find good suppliers with the same ethos as I have. It's been a bit of a learning curve. Everything that I sell has been sourced very carefully and I have a zero plastic pledge on my postage and packing. "I'm not telling everyone to go around their house and get rid of every single-use plastic item but when things run out or need replacing, like a lunch box, then consider alternatives like a stainless steel lunch box, which is much more robust and doesn't leak." Cath, who has a 24-year-old daughter, believes her online shop has come at the right time and senses there is a mood for change in the UK. "Consumers have cut down on plastic shopping bags since the 5p charge was introduced and I think that's started a ripple effect. My message is that as individuals we can make a difference because, as consumers, we drive demand. As people start shopping a bit more consciously and become a bit more demanding about what they want, manufacturers have to

n FROM OUR MP

Gig economy employees deserve the same rights as the rest of us DURING the Industrial Revolution many factory owners sought to maximise their profits without regard for the welfare of their workers. It was common for people, including children, to work between 14-16 hours a day in deeply unsafe conditions. Despite the Factory Acts of the 1800s and the activities of the fledgling trade union movement, it took many years to achieve change. George Orwell’s ‘The Road to Wigan Pier’, published in 1937, detailed the plight of working class people in Industrial England, describing the awful working conditions of coal miners, who were poorly paid and lacked access to safe housing. Since then, much progress has been made on health and safety at work, the right to paid holidays, sick leave, redundancy pay, parental leave, a minimum wage, and protection from unfair dismissal.

One of the biggest challenges to these hard-won working rights is the emergence of the so called ‘gig’ economy, a labour market characterised by the prevalence of short-term, often zero hours, contracts or freelance work, as opposed to permanent jobs. There are now around 1.1 million people in self-employment, with many working for companies like Uber or Deliveroo. This has many worrying implications. For instance, if you’re a Deliveroo rider and you have an accident, your employer doesn’t have to insure you or your bike, and nor can you claim sick pay. This erosion of our rights can have potentially lethal consequences. Don Lane was a 53-year-old self-employed DPD courier who missed medical appointments to treat his diabetes after being threatened by a £150 daily charge for missed work, and died as a consequence of his

condition. He was deeply failed by his employer and by the state in its duty to safeguard workers. Workers who represent companies, have to meet their conditions and sign a contract with them, are clearly not “independent contractors”. The Government now needs to bring employment law into line with the judgements of several employment tribunals that have ruled in favour of those working for the likes of Uber and City Sprint, and declared they should receive the rights afforded to employees. Today 4.6 million people in the UK are living in persistent poverty. What is striking is how many of them are working, but in insecure low-paid jobs. If we are to truly tackle poverty in this country we need all workers to be treated with respect, get a fair wage for a day’s work, and their rights at work upheld.

n THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH

Loving one’s neighbour as oneself I MOVED to Fishponds five years ago and compared to the people I meet who have lived here all their lives I am a “newbie”. Yet for me, it feels as if this is now home and has been for a while (and some time to come I hope). I find Fishponds to be incredible place to live, and as a new comer I don’t think that I am alone in that. Each day brings something new, or different or unexpected. I spend a lot of my time walking up and down the Fishponds Road, between St Mary’s Church at one end and All Saints Church at the other often via the school gate. And it is on those mini journeys that I am witness all kinds of acts of kindness. So many people stop to chat, or lift their heads to raise a smile at another person. There are times when that peaceful picture is broken when the fire engines or police cars flash their lights and

sound their alarms, or when the murmurings of an argument spills onto the street. Fishponds isn’t immune to the reality of life. And all life has its noisy and messy bits. But nevertheless it adds a depth to this place that we live in that makes it feel “real”. The chip shop sitting in the crook of the coffee establishments, the betting venues nestled between the pubs and supermarkets. Fishponds is for me a place that has everything. Literally. So as I approach Lent and look to Easter I am often caught thinking about life on the Fishponds Road and what that says about this time of year. Lent is seen as a time of giving stuff up – normally chocolate or booze. Yet that isn’t done for the purpose of removing myself from nice things in order to feel somehow spiritually better or superior – it is not an act of self-improvement

which is more often just another ruse in order to try and shed a few pounds. But giving stuff up is about trying to appreciate how amazing those things are in the everyday of life. To go without them for a while can make me value them more. In fact for me this Lent it’s about taking that time to stop and value the things that happen all around and in the everyday. To absorb and wonder and delight in everything that happens up and down that high street we live on. To see the glimpses of God in the everyday stuff of life, be them acts of kindness, or be them noisy or messy. The story of the final week of Jesus’s life has bits of peace and harmony and also moments of violence. It has times of stillness and silence alongside a lot of angry shouting. It has mess and suffering in abundance on Good Friday and

Revd Lizzie Kesteven All Saints and St Mary's, Fishponds

yet also within that the hope of Easter Day, when life triumphs in all its glory and goodness. I would suggest that it is not that different to life on the Fishponds Road. Revd Lizzie

Action in Hillfields

20 mph speed limit review A REVIEW of 20mph speed limits in Bristol is set to be carried out to look at how well the scheme is working. The review, which takes place this spring, will involve consulting with residents and councillors to see what is and isn't working and if there is anything that can be done better. A new report, carried out by the University of the West of England (UWE) for Bristol City Council to assess the impact of 20mph so far, has recently been released and will be used in the review process. UWE’s Bristol Twenty Miles Per Hour Limit Evaluation (BRITE) study found that, on average, speeds on more than 100 surveyed roads have reduced since the 20mph speed limits were implemented, with average speeds of between 19mph and 26mph on 20mph roads shown in the report. On 30mph streets, average

speeds on the roads surveyed were below 30mph in every area. The lower speeds were also found during night and summer times, when there is typically less traffic to slow motorists. Cllr Mhairi Threlfall, Bristol City Council’s cabinet member for Transport and Connectivity, said: "It is still early days in terms of assessing the impact of 20mph, but the results from this report are a positive indication that lower speeds are making it safer to get around in Bristol.

"What we need to establish is where 20mph appears to be working and where it may not be as effective, and the statistics from this report give us a good indication of that. "However, it is important that we have a clear idea of how 20mph is affecting individual areas and I look forward to working closely with local councillors and residents as we undertake a review in the spring." The review is expected to take place over an eight week consultation period. Any resulting changes that are agreed will take several months to implement. No decisions have yet been made on which roads will be included within the review. The 20mph speed limits were introduced in 2014 and 2015, following a pilot scheme in 2010 and full council approval for a city-wide roll out in 2012.

RESIDENTS were given tips at the latest meeting of the new Hillfields Community Network to tackle a recent spate of car and van crime. These included: - Take valuables out of your car/ van wherever possible. - Park in public, well lit places close to CCTV if possible. - Try to park with the back of your van up against a wall so the doors can't be opened. The idea of setting up a Neighbourhood Watch was discussed. Residents were also urged to report every incident via 101 (or 999 if urgent). Next meeting is Wednesday March 7 at 7.30pm at St John's Church, Lodge Causeway when community projects will be discussed. Safety fears over fallen tree at footpath WARNING notices which have been put up to stop people using a dangerous footpath at a Downend beauty spot are being ignored. Members of Friends of Lincombe Barn Park and Woods were dismayed to see a large oak tree had fallen and blocked Jubilee Walkway alongside the River Frome, in between Lincombe Barn Park and Frenchay Bridge. The tree fell after two nights of very strong winds in early January and took large sections of path with it. Official notices were put up either end of the path along with tape to stop people using the walkway but are being ignored. The tree cannot be removed until it has been inspected by the Environment Agency but meanwhile people are being advised to stay away for their own safety. Diane Paddon, secretary of the Friends group, said: "A

this is dealt with as a matter of urgency." A South Gloucestershire Council spokesman said: "We are aware of the fallen tree located on a footpath alongside the River Frome in Downend, on our border with Bristol. The matter is currently with the Environment Agency, who are currently assessing the fallen tree and will decide if any action is necessary. "Our officers have assessed the damaged footpath and are arranging for its repair and this will be completed as soon as possible. "We have put up notices to advise footpath users of the closure. The weir remains accessible from Frenchay Bridge." The Friends group had recently secured funding to improve signage and accessibility around the woods but this will be put on hold as the safety issue of the path takes priority.

Look out for the wildflower meadow THE Friends of Lincombe Barn Park and Woods are looking forward to seeing the new wildflower meadow begin to burst into bloom this year, though it will take a few years to fully mature. Upcoming events include Star Gazing with a local astronomer (limited places) on Friday February 23 from 7.30-9pm. There will also be a Spring Clean/Litter Pick from 10am-1pm Saturday March 17; a Dawn Chorus at 5am Saturday April 21; and a Bat Talk on Friday May 18 from 7-8pm. A Tree Talk takes place on Saturday June 2 from 10.30am-noon. "We were informed that the safety issue caused by damage to the path will be investigated by South Gloucestershire Council and that the oak would have

to remain where it is until the Environment Agency have inspected it. "Our warning notices were replaced by official notices and the path was taped off; however the tape has been broken and people are still using Jubilee Walkway. Silver Fox Pilates

MY name is Rachel I have been attending Pilates for myself for the last 15 years and decided to train as an instructor following back injuries, during two pregnancies and after a couple of tumbles off of my bicycle, this was exacerbated by general lifting and carrying of my two young children. I found that pilates really helped reduce my back ache and strengthend my whole back and core. Within one year of injuring my back I noticed massive improvements from regular pilates. Now I can honestly say that my back is tip top from doing this type of exercise. Pilates for me is all about improving flexibility, reducing aches and pain strengthening and toning the whole body through

exercises and stretches. Before training as an instructor I worked for 20 years in healthcare mainly as an Occupational Therapist in muscular skeletal and mental health. I found that I was increasingly recommending Pilates to service users for recovery from back injuries and for general relaxation and to reduce anxiety and improve mood. I now work between Bristol and Devon and I have a wide range of customers from an 83 year old with osteoporosis, busy working people, parents, a 30 year old climber and dancers. All sorts of people come to my classes with varied levels of fitness and abilities and I love the challenge of adjusting the exercises for the customers to suit everyone’s needs in the classes.

n SPOTLIGHT on

Eastville Neighbourhood Network

SOME readers may remember as far back as March 2017 when Bristol City Council disbanded the Greater Neighbourhood Partnerships (GNPs) as part of cost cutting measures. Within Bristol there were 14 GNPs each representing three or four wards. Greater Fishponds GNP covered Fishponds, Frome Vale, Eastville and Hillfields. Their purpose was to devolve some decision making to local communities and encourage discussions on how best to spend an allocation of funds from the Council to improve facilities in the area. Meetings were held three to four times a year with representatives from local community groups alongside council officers and councillors. A year on, and there’s a new kid on the block. In place of the old GNPs, six area committees now cover Bristol. Area 3 - Eastville Neighbourhood Network - is made up of Eastville, Frome Vale, Hillfields and Lockleaze wards. Eastville Neighbourhood Network has been formed to bring together our local community groups as a forum to discuss how best to develop ideas for improvements in the ward. The group is community led with support from local councillors. Group meetings are a great opportunity to influence the way money from various council funds are spent and to put forward project proposals that enhance the quality of life for residents. There is lively and constructive discussion around improving facilities and amenities for parks, streets, environmental issues and transport. Our next meeting is being held on Thursday March 1, at 7pm at The New Place, 119-121 Fishponds Road and we extend a warm invitation to all interested groups to help us on our journey towards a brighter and better Eastville! n FRIENDS OF EASTVILLE PARK

Visit at dawn to enjoy magic of birdsong THERE can be little doubt that Eastville Park is home to the eighth wonder of the world! Strolling along the river paths or picking your way through park woodland at this time of the year, you simply cannot miss the orchestral quality and magic of birdsong. Not unlike enjoying the purity of music on a good quality hi-fi system, the wonderful dawn or sunset chorus is best heard without the droning hum of traffic on the M32. Try

an early morning visit for the perfect start to your day. It may take a couple of minutes to ‘tune in’ to the singing of the blackbird and the thrushes mixed in with chatter from sparrows, tits and the occasional interruptions from crows, ducks and geese. But, after a while, you’ll be able to listen in on the conversations about who’s doing what today, what’s for breakfast and who’s seeing who. All this followed by the early morning sing-a-long celebrating the joy of life! It’s not all fun and games in the bird world though - there’s work being done by crows and magpies, collecting twigs to help build the nests for the breeding season just around the corner. Talking of corvids, a pair of raven has just been spotted in the area which means that the Fishponds area is home to almost the full range of birds in this group: crow, raven, rook, jackdaw, jay, magpie, treepie and nutcracker! During the last few weeks Friends of Eastville Park have launched a project to encourage park visitors to feed the ducks and swans a wider variety of treats. In the good old British tradition, we’re coming to the lake on a weekend with bags full of white bread, which really isn’t doing the birds much good at all. Seed, grape, corn, pea, lettuce and rice all provide a balanced natural diet and you’ll be so much more popular with the birds! We’ve had a great response

from local artists who are helping by designing signs that will be displayed in the park so if you would like to contribute, we’d love to hear from you. The Friends have also just circulated a survey asking all park users for their thoughts on what brings them to the park and how they would like to see the facilities and experience improved. Please help us to understand what you’d like to see for our park by completing the survey which can be found on our Facebook page. Friends of Eastville Park have joined a new forum of community groups which come together as Eastville Neighbourhood Network (a new but cheaper version of the old Neighbourhood Partnerships) to put forward proposals to Bristol City Council for area improvements. Our proposals for the park will to a great extent be reflective of the results from the survey and we’ll keep you updated of progress going forward. Some visitors may have noticed a small group of people carrying out various maintenance tasks around the park. ParkWork is an initiative which offers training and skills development for people who need additional support to secure permanent employment. Led by Joe McKenna, they're a cheerful bunch who work very hard (try planting crocus bulbs on a sloping bank without sliding down!) and are always happy to down tools to chat to passers-by. They’ll soon be

EASTVILLE PARK starting on a spring clean of the old swimming pool and improving woodland pathways above the lake. We really appreciate the work they do so thanks for your efforts. This month’s moan is directed at the council's plan to consider introducing commercial advertising in the parks setting. Surely someone, somewhere in City Hall, understands that parks and green spaces are where people purposefully go to get away from the bling bling, the blah blah and the buy buy that follows us wherever we go in our daily lives. Wake up and smell the grass, council! And finally, come down and enjoy the bluebells in March. Where you see carpets of blue, you’re also invariably looking at old - sometimes hundreds of years old - woodland! The Parkie

Fitness classes for older people STAYING Steady is the title of fitness classes being run in leisure centres in Bristol this spring. The classes are aimed at helping older people improve their independence, stay mobile and healthy whilst also offering a fun way to stay active and socialise. There are estimated to be around 58,800 people living within the city council boundary who are aged 65 or over and 55,000 (95 per cent) are believed to be living independently. Of this 16,000 (around 30 per cent) fall at least once a year, rising to 50 per cent of those aged 80 or over.

To help reduce the risk and rate of falls, the council is encouraging older people to sign up to Staying Steady classes, which teach exercises that can help to improve mobility and increase confidence. The trained staff can adapt the exercises to suit the needs of the people in the class. All abilities can be catered for including exercises which can be done standing or seated. Equipment like resistance bands, balls and hoops are provided as part of the class. East Bristol classes are taking place at Brunel Fitness Centre and Easton Leisure Centre. Full details can be found online.

n CULTURAL FIX WITH ANNA BLIGHTMAN

Curiouser and curiouser MAD as a March hare is a phrase which has long been quoted in English literature…as way back as the 1500s and then popularised by Lewis Carroll in Alice in Wonderland. There is definitely something in it, and whilst it may not be breeding season for us humans, there is an overwhelming sense of optimism and spring fever that creeps up through your body. A playfulness that returns once the long, dark, winter months start to ebb away. Literature has long been a love of mine, a place to escape to, revel in and enjoy. One of the first things I did when I moved to Fishponds was to seek out a book club, which has had me reading all sorts of books I wouldn’t have necessarily picked up of my own accord. The group originated in the old incarnation of the Kingfisher, which has now re-opened with a facelift.

If you haven’t been back yet, do go and say hi to Maya. Independent cafes in the community are hugely important; places to meet, discuss and create. It is now open slightly later in the evenings too, closing at 6pm. I certainly intend to make use of a post school stop-off every now and again! Since that original book club over two years ago, we have met (almost) monthly to discuss what we’ve read. The discussions are always stimulating, and leave me feel refreshed and alive, so I wanted to look into the power of reading and how it not only make us more literate, but has hidden health benefits for body and mind! There is research to suggest that, similar to physical exercise, reading for 30 minutes can increase health and wellbeing. According to a BBC report I read, studies show that reading

can help increase our emotional intelligence as we follow characters through a range of perspectives and motivations. There is evidence that suggests mental stimulation is one of the factors that can delay the onset of dementia. When we read we create mental simulations of the activities, sights and sounds of scenes in a story, blending these with our own memories and experiences, all of which stimulates our neural pathways. Not only is it good for us adults, but reading to young children is said to be where they learn a love of reading, where their imaginations grow and where they develop ideas and fantasies. Not to mention the bond it can create despite being able to read herself, my eight-year-old and I still ritually have story time…long may it last! So, I say, stave off the madness

of March and pick up a book. Alice in Wonderland is a great place to start… For more info about the book club or to get in touch please contact me. Anna Blightman anna@thedistantfuture alwayssoundslovely.com

n GARDENING AT the end of this month we are already a quarter of the way through the year, it seems that life is speeding past quicker and quicker each year. The spring flowers are all coming into full bloom now and the parks and gardens are looking incredible, hopefully there will be some provision in the council budget to maintain the swathes of gorgeous daffodils. The weather has been fairly dreary recently too which is a usual mantra at this time of year, but the days are starting to warm up as they get a little longer, I’m no longer waking in the dark anymore. A protected environment such as a greenhouse or at least a cold frame is essential at this time of year if you’re wanting to get your seedlings off to a decent start. It’s possible to germinate in the warmth of a window sill but light soon becomes a problem. I was recently told of a homemade window propagator design that used a foil reflector on the inside, this gave a more even spread of the reflected light apparently with great success. Another slightly more expensive option is LED grow lights, they vary in quality but will do an excellent job of preventing etiolation, the long leggy stems caused by a lack of light.

Ferns

This month we’re looking the last of the plants that come before the most common ones that you’ll be propagating and buying at nurseries. Ferns are the first plants to show real cell differentiation such as a vascular system and stems to support themselves. They all come into a group called pteridophytes which includes club mosses, true ferns and many gardeners favourite, horsetails. They too display a clear alternation of generations but the major difference and advancement from lower order plants is that they spend most of their life in the sporophyte stage, this is stage where the cells contain all of the information to grow their fronds or vertical branches. These then produce

swellings that burst releasing the spores that go on to germinate into the gametophyte generation where each cell only contains half of the genetic information. You could be mistaken for thinking that spores are simply seeds and although there are similarities they are not the same. Spores are considerably smaller and don’t rely on fertilisation. If left on damp seed compost and given the right conditions the spores will start to grow, they don’t however grow into new ferns, yet. They start off growing into what are called prothalli, these are odd little structures that are actually the gametophyte stage of the fern. These little things then handle the fertilisation that produces the sporophyte stage and that is when you get what you see in a pot in the nursery, simple eh? There are about 10000 different species of fern on the planet which vary hugely from the giant Osmunda ferns and their 5 feet or more fronds to the tiny Asplenium trichomanes measured in only a few inches. The ones however that we are most likely to come across in the UK are Bracken (Pteridium aquilinum) which is an abundant and invasive fern that has the widest distribution worldwide and Horsetail (Equisetum arvense). These latter are considered living fossils due to the fact that Equisetum is the only genus is its class that remains unchanged since it was dominating the understory of forests 400 million years ago. Unfortunately all too many of us know that this is one plant that you really would rather have nothing to do with, invasive could be an understatement when you consider trying to eradicate it from your land. You’ll probably not be dealing with Bracken or Horsetail just now so occupy yourself with some of these other March tasks. Things will certainly be starting to grow again to take the opportunity to divide overgrown perennials Lawns will probably be needing a first cut around now but make sure you start on a long cut

Then give the edges a trim to neaten them up Prune rose bushes before the end of the month Any weeds will be putting on growth now so keep on top of them to make life easier as the year progresses If you’ve Cornus (dogwood) or Salix (willow) then cut them now so that you have fresh growth for a good winter display later on Propagation both with seeds and tuber cuttings from dahlias should be in full swing now. Thingwall Park allotment shop has a large selection of annual flower and vegetable seed at the moment. Slugs and snails are going to be on the hunt for food so keep an eye on fresh young seedlings.

Keep and eye on diseases and fungal rot in greenhouses now the temperature in them will be rising but the environment still damp. http://www.aimlessgardening. co.uk

n ON THE BEAT WITH PCSO ANITA PERKS

Don't park on the pavements MARCH is upon us and your local beat team have been exceptionally busy over the past month. Firstly I must make an appeal in relation to an incident that occurred in Hawkesbury Road on February 12. Avon Fire and Rescue were called at 01.39 in the morning. An investigation has begun into a suspected arson attack which destroyed six cars. Thankfully no one was injured in the blaze, but residents where left distressed and scared. Windows were cracked, bins melted with the heat and the road surface has been damaged. I have been out offering support to residents and working with the council to get things restored and repaired as quickly as possible. If anyone has any information in relation to this incident no matter how small,

then please ring 101 and quote 5218032068. Staying on the vehicle theme, we’ve had lots of calls in relation to bad parking. The rule is that pavements are for pedestrians. I have spoken to and issued tickets to drivers who park on the pavement alongside Barclays Bank on Fishponds Road. It is not acceptable to force pedestrians onto the highway, many of whom are parents with prams or elderly residents, while you run errands or nip to the bank. So please park legally and considerately and think of other people’s safety. This applies to residential streets as well and especially outside local schools. A crackdown on bad parking has begun and tickets are being issued, you have been warned!

You may have heard in recent media coverage about the problem of motorbike theft in Bristol and its associated anti-social behaviour (ASB), with the thieves joy riding the stolen bikes in local streets at all times of the day and night, usually in areas of north Bristol. Operation Buell is our response to the problem, which has been running for two years now. We are starting to see real results with eight arrests in the past week in connection with motorbike thefts and illegal riding of motorcycles and two people charged. Please remember to properly secure your motorbike – we would far prefer for the bikes not to be stolen in the first place. Top security advice can be found on the Avon and Somerset Police website.

On a brighter note PCSO Emily Headley who has been with us at Fishponds for four years is currently starting her training to become a fully-fledged police officer. Emily will be missed by both local residents and all of her colleagues. PCSO recruitment is on-going and I am more than happy to help anyone who thinks this maybe the career for them, so please get in touch if you are interested. You can contact me via the force website. Until next time, stay safe out there. PCSO Anita Perks

n VET BLOG

Health care plans and Insurance - what is the difference? WHEN keeping your pet happy and healthy, it is inevitable that they may pay a visit to the surgery for vaccinations, neutering or if they are unwell. It is sensible to budget for these trips in advance. Care plans, such as our Complete Care, help with preventative health care while pet insurance helps cover bills when things go wrong e.g. broken leg or diabetes. You may find they are best run side-by-side to help cover all of your vet bills. Complete care is a monthly direct debit plan which offers a more affordable way to cover the important aspects of healthcare such as vaccinations, flea and worm treatment plus much more. Complete care is also available for rabbits and now includes a yearly VHD2 vaccine alongside the standard myxomatosis/VHD1

vaccine, plus a collection of perks such as nurse nail clipping and more. Insurance is offered by many independent companies, and it is worth researching well to ensure you get the most suitable cover your pet. Here are some of the things to look out for when researching insurance: • Exclusions. Some companies may exclude certain illnesses, typically pre-existing conditions or breed specific problems. Be sure to check the small print. • Policy limits/cover. Check the amount the company will cover per illness/injury. Go for the best you can afford. • Lifelong cover is preferable as the ‘money pot’ tops up for each claim year. This is ideal for ongoing illnesses such as diabetes

or arthritis. •A ccident vs illness cover. We would always recommend accident AND illness cover. If you would like more information on Complete Care, or would like to pick up a voucher for 4 weeks free insurance, please give our friendly team at Kingswood Vets4Pets a call on 0117 961 6417.

n PLANNING

Time to allow terrace bin stores? TIMES change, there is no denying it. New streets can be designed to cope with all the modern requirements: Pavements, street trees (if only...) parking, front gardens and bin storage. Established streets cannot always be engineered to provide for those modern expectations. An extreme local case in point is Ernestville Road. Tucked away between Lodge Causeway and the cycle path, the street is not only a dead end road, where drivers have no capacity for turning, but it was clearly originally designed to meet bygone requirements, before the private car became a fact of life. In this narrow street there is just about sufficient width for cramped on-street parking on one side only. Although this may be how streets will be designed again in a distant, post-car future, it struggles to meet current demands. To an extent these are problem that affect every street. A few

years ago, when all the rubbish generated by a household went from house to dustbin to bin lorry to landfill site, bin storage was not an issue. Nowadays, waste and recycling are a major talking point and they also intersect with planning. There is a radical difference between the front of any house and the rear, in both functional and planning terms. The back garden or yard is private, whereas the front is not only connected to the street, but is regarded as part of it. Therefore, in the back garden there are limited extensions and outbuildings that do not require planning permission. On the front of the house, the same latitude only extends to a small porch and not to any extensions or outbuildings. For servicing purposes, that connection between house and street is vital. It is usually the only location from which the bins can be collected. If you want a

bin store to keep your recycling tidied away and out of the house, it will almost certainly require permission and be assessed against the appearance of the street as a whole. Of course with recycling bin sizes changing over time, such a solution may only prove temporary, even if planning permission can be obtained. This burden is at its greatest in terraced properties, where the occupants are condemned to move their bins and bikes from back to front, through the house, or have to store both within the house. Perhaps it is time to allow permitted development rights to extend to bin and bike stores at the front of houses, using similar parameters as for porches and stipulating matching building materials to the house or wall to which it would be attached. If and until this happens at a national level, the local solution could be provided by a Local Development

Planning matters

Chris Gosling Order, which could allow such measures locally, by removing them from planning control. It would be a late, but would have to potential to be an effective legacy of Bristol’s former Cycle City status. chrisgoslingplanning@gmail.com

10k runners urged to support BUST A DOWNEND woman is urging runners to support breast cancer charity BUST by joining its team of runners in the Bristol 10K on Sunday May 13. BUST - Breast Cancer Unit Support Trust - was formed in 1991 by patients and is now the major funding partner for the Bristol Breast Care Centre at Southmead Hospital. Its chairwoman, Jenny Wookey, hopes to enlist as many recruits as possible to boost funds to buy advanced

equipment before it is available through NHS funding. The race is its biggest annual fundraising initiative, and the charity is seeking participants who are willing to run or walk the route for the charity. Jenny, who was diagnosed with breast cancer 15 years ago, said: "The advances in treatment over the past decade have been tremendous. However, we still need to do more. So, if you have ever thought about entering Bristol’s 10K why not make 2018 the year? ." Those running in the charity’s team will get a reduced entrance fee of £27 in return for committing to raise money. Contact Jenny Wookey on 0117 956 6522 or email bust@ bustbristol.co.uk More information about BUST can be found at www. bustbristol.co.uk

Thanks a million! Baby Bank Network marks 1000 referrals BRISTOL’S Baby Bank Network has celebrated its 1,000th referral. The charity was set up three years ago to collect pre-loved baby essentials and give them to families in need. The volunteers say they are now helping the equivalent of 10 families a week. The charity works with dozens of referral partners including NextLink, Shelter and Home Start as well as midwives and health visitors across the city. Volunteers put in hundreds of hours a month at the Fishponds warehouse to check, clean and prepare packages which include cots, prams, baby clothes, toiletries and books ready for collection by referral partners. Co-founder and trustee Becky Gilbert said: "It’s a humbling moment to step back and realise that what started as an idea has very quickly evolved into tangible support for families in need. “We live in a wealthy city in and it breaks my heart to think that there are babies that go without the basics - but with statistics showing that one in four children in Bristol are living in poverty we’ve seen demand increasing year-on-year for our service. Our main challenge now is keeping up with that demand.” Baby Bank Network currently helps babies under the age of one but has ambitions to extend this to all under 5s. It is also exploring options

Email: sales@fishpondsvoice.co.uk

to get its own van and volunteer driver so it can deliver the items to referral partners and help even more families. Dr Gilbert added: “If there’s anyone out there who can help us with a van or delivery service, we’d love to hear from you. We’ve got plenty of families needing our help, plenty of items

in the warehouse to give them but what we don’t always have is the means of getting these items out.” If you can help with a van/ delivery service, please drop Baby Bank Network a line at: becky@babybanknetwork.com More information at: www. babybanknetwork.com

n PROPS COLUMN

We're loving our healthy lifestyle! PROPS students and staff had a great time learning and experiencing new things in our first ever Healthy Eating Week in February. We started out the week learning all about sugar, and the Community Learning Disabilities Team delivered a Sugar Smart workshop for us. We looked at how much sugar is in common foods and drink that we might eat, and a lot of the results were quite shocking! We learned that we should have no more than seven teaspoons of sugar a day, and that drinking just one can of cola is over your daily allowance, and a Milkshake from a typical fast food restaurant is more than twice the daily allowance! As the week progressed, we kept active with a MoveAbility session, yoga class, spin class, and rugby training. The spin class in particular got everyone’s blood pumping, and the yoga provided some much needed stretching and relaxation. Many thanks to

Bristol Community Rugby and Kingswood Leisure Centre for providing us with free spaces/ training. We kept our energy levels topped up with healthy sugars in a smoothie making session, and by making energy balls out of fruit and nuts. Before the rugby, students prepared a slow-releasing energy brunch of either porridge or scrambled egg. Vegan, glutenfree and dairy free diets were all catered for! We also managed to fit in a sponsored walk over the Severn Bridge which raised ÂŁ75 towards PROPS students going on the Bristol to Bordeaux bike ride. A fantastic effort by everyone on a cold and windy day, and many thanks for all the donations. From February 19, PROPS students are using their Boccia skills to deliver open session for anyone who would like to take part. Would you like to learn how to play a new sport, meet new people and have some fun? Then come along to our accessible sessions at

The Park Centre in Knowle, every Monday at 11am-noon. Contact Lauren Walker on the number below for more information or to book a place! PROPS will be holding a big exhibition of student artwork at the Fishponds Old Library on May 15-16 - save the date in your

diaries! To find out more about PROPS, or to get in touch, visit www. propsbristol.org, email info@ propsbristol.co.uk or call 0117 965 3514. Helen Brittain Programme and development manager

n PROPERTY WITH HUNTERS ESTATE AGENTS

Fishponds — a great place to live HAVING become a local landmark himself for more than 20 years, Branch Manager - Mark Symonds is a perfect advocate of the area and his knowledge of Fishponds is second to none. In many ways Mark has grown up with Fishponds and acknowledged and welcomed many changes, not least the takeover of the old Besley Hill Estate Agents which changed to Hunters. Mark takes us on a guided tour of the 7 best things about his area: Fishponds has always been that hidden gem. Whilst other locations have often been more ‘fashionable’ or ‘trendy’, Fishponds has never wanted to be a ‘flash in the pan’. A wide choice of local schools to include some high profile established private schools and the recent addition of a Steiner school in the area justifiably encourage many families to target Fishponds as a perfect location for the future. Prices in the area over the years have also remained within the reach of most buyers, making it an affordable choice surrounded by an ocean of highly priced neighbourhoods surrounding. Fishponds is no more than 5 miles from Bristol City centre and perfectly placed for the regular commuter by bus, bike or car. A connection with the M32 motorway is even nearer together with a Tesco Superstore and Ikea. Public transport and the hugely popular Bristol to Bath cycle path provide commuters with plenty of options. One of the biggest surprises to Mark and many established local residents is the wealth of open green space surrounding us. Considering how close we are to the City, Mark is always surprised by the easy access to public open spaces in many of our parks to include Oldbury Court Estate, Eastville Park, Snuff Mills, the River Frome and valley walks – the perfect tonic for an active lifestyle. But it’s not all peace and quiet – Eastville Park plays host to some mighty festivals Love Saves the Day, Bristol Islamic Cultural Fayre or Tokyo World – there always seems to be something happening. Our High Street is also a great success story. Fishponds has always been lucky to attract a broad range of shops and services. In recent years the big food and grocery chains including Morrisons, Aldi,

Lidl, Co-operative and Sainsbury’s have all set up home in the area. The High Street is one of the longest in the area and if you get fed up with shopping Fishponds’ now supports a growing number of coffee shops, traditional local pubs, independent restaurants, takeaways, other eating places and

even a Micro Brewery. One of the great qualities of area for an Estate Agent is a varied and eye catching selection of properties to own or rent. Mark loves the area for its truly diverse mix of purpose built flats and modern houses alongside amazing period 200 year old stone cottages.

And finally for Mark its people that make a place special. Fishponds has a diverse population of younger buyers new to the area, professionals needing that easy commute, families after the park for the kids and those seeking retirement and a level walk of the shops – Fishponds has it all!

Besley Hill Estate Agents just got better!

n ON THE TREATMENT TABLE

My part in Dom's success

Blog 49: An Olympic Medal WHEN I started January, I knew it was going to be a busy one, one way or the other but I had no idea that the story would end with a medal in the 2018 Winter Olympics. First some background: for five years I worked down at the track at Bath University with the Paralympic sprinters. As many people know, the GB skeleton and bobsled teams train down there as well, so our paths crossed. That is where I met the quiet, intelligent and unassuming man Dom Parsons. We struck up a friendship and I have worked to help keep him fit and firing on all cylinders. For many years we discussed how great it would be if I could go out and help him and his friends at an official world cup race. It is always so much easier and - dare I say it - more effective, when you are working at that level to be able work at the event and between races. So this year we agreed that I would come out to help in St Moritz, Switzerland, in mid-January … it helps that the skiing in St Moritz is superb and Swiss hospitality isn’t bad either. By going out and watching Dom, his partner Jackie (Team Australia) and

friend John (also Team Australia) race it gave me real insight into the stresses put on the body during skeleton and subsequently refine my treatment to help potentially increase the athlete’s performance on the track. The sport is incredibly technical and it is comparable to Formula One, not just in the sense that it is really, really fast but the technology in the sled is fundamentally important. Dom uses a sled made and designed by Kristan Bromley, former three times Olympic athlete and legend in the sport. Both Dom and Kristan share an education in high-level engineering, which I’m sure helps with the relationship. I believe that by Kristan adjusting the sled to the course and Dom, and then me adjusting Dom to the sled and trying to give him maximum launch from the start, we are aiming to get slider, sled and track as one for optimum speed and the lowest course times. This was the second to last race before the season ends at the Winter Olympics in Pyeong Chang. Up until now Dom had a season that was below his normal standards. Last season Dom medalled regularly on the circuit and was GB number 1. This year Dom had not yet medalled

and was frustrated with his performance. I am super happy to say that for the race in Switzerland everything came together and Dom got his first medal of the season, confirming his spot as GB number 1 and followed that up the week later with another medal, cementing his place in the GB Olympic Team. (Jackie got a best in two seasons position on the leader board and John got a track record push start, just saying). Just before Dom left for Korea, he popped into Cleve Chiropractic for one last treatment before the 2018 Winter Olympics for a ‘top up’ and humblingly gave me his race vest AND his medal from the race in St Moritz. For the first time in my life I was speechless. Nobody deserves somebody else’s medal and I can’t help but see how much that medal would mean to him, but Dom insisted that I had it and thanked me for helping get his season back on track. Even as I write this I find it hard to express just what that kindness means to me, but that is Dom, he is kind, modest and, beneath it all, fiercely determined. He has held off a bright career in engineering as he trains full time and works on his PhD. Enter Dom on the Olympic stage. After some impressive

warm-up runs in Pyeong Chang, Dom was well placed to put down a good time and after his two runs on the first day he was in fourth place. Even fourth place would be an exceptional result if he could keep it going for the final two runs the next day. However, Dom laid down his fastest run of the competition for his third run, putting him in third place and a genuine medal contender if he could just hang on. The fourth and final slide saw him make a tiny error that left him in second place with two of the best sliders in the world to go. You could see that he knew that it could have cost him as he sunk his head into his hands but down came the normally perfect and current world champion, Latvian Martins Dukurs, who made a slightly bigger mistake and eventually finished behind Dom! Then the ΩKorean came down to seal his huge lead with a Gold. So after four runs Dom finished third by 0.11 seconds with a Bronze in the 2018 winter Olympic Games.| Everybody who knows Dom ‘the wizard’ Parsons would agree that there is no better guy in the world that could win that medal. He has the best attitude in an athlete that I have ever seen and talent, pure talent. Thank you Dom for letting me go on a small part of that journey with you. All the best to you and Jackie, from all the team at Cleve Chiropractic and congratulations, you medalwinning Olympian!
