Warning : gridlock ahead COMMUTERS to Bristol’s north fringe are facing long detours and delays following a sudden change to the work on a major new transport scheme. While everyone expected hold-ups during the programme to create the £200m MetroBus network, an announcement that Stoke Lane would close to northbound traffic for a year took residents by surprise. People in the area were given less than two weeks’ notice that the closure was due to begin on April 24 – and they quickly launched a protest campaign. Stoke Lane Action Group said residents were fed up that no one was listening to them. Bristol City Council and South Gloucestershire Council, the authorities responsible for MetroBus, and their contractors agreed to a four-week delay, meaning the road will become one-way on May 22. They are talking to the campaigners about the potential impact of their proposals, which they say are necessary to get the work done as quickly and cheaply as possible while keeping traffic flowing.

Dialogue is so important BRISTOL is going to the polls on May 5 to choose the city’s second Mayor and all 70 councillors. Our hope is that whoever is elected will listen to the voice of the people in the Fishponds area. As our pages show, residents here are not reticent in putting forward their views! Well done to Neil Collard, Amanda Vinall, Fiona Gleed and others for leading a rapid and detailed campaign on the Stoke Lane closure proposals, which has resulted in a month’s delay. If nothing else, this at least serves to make sure more people are aware of what is happening – something the authorities failed to do in a proper manner when they changed their plans. The campaigners have succeeded in getting

n NEWS A FISHPONDS businessman has come up with a plan to turn the former tile depot in Fishponds Road into an indoor market. Mark Hughes envisages it being “a mix of St Nicholas Market and St Philip's fruit and veg market” with fresh produce stalls, artists' stalls and general market stalls. “It would be a little bit of everything,” he said. “I'd like to see wooden sheds, a bit like at the Christmas market in Broadmead, and a real community feel. There would be room for about 30-40 stalls and we would be quite strict about what goes in so we get a good mix. “It would be very affordable for stallholders and would be a fantastic place to shop. We want to create a place where people can sell their products with very low overheads that can pass on to the customer, creating a sustainable, viable place for people to shop locally.” Mr Hughes, who runs Osbornes stationery shop in Fishponds, said he had been amazed at the overwhelmingly positive response in the first few days after making his idea public. “I can't believe how well it has gone. Several people have already said they would take stalls and many have said they would use it,” he said.

Community indoor market plan for tile warehouse

“I have been thinking about this for quite a while. I think it fits the building and it fits Fishponds.” Mr Hughes has been talking to councillors, business people and Fishponds Planning Group about developing a detailed proposal. The intention is that 25 per cent of the

Voice of the people achieves delay in shock road closure WE’VE won the battle – now let’s win the war. That’s the response of campaigners who swung into action last month when they heard that Stoke Lane was to be shut to northbound traffic for a year. They have persuaded the team behind the £200m MetroBus network to delay the proposed closure for a month and they are hoping to convince them to keep the road open for two-way traffic from Frenchay Park Road to UWE throughout the work, or at least to keep the one-way restriction to a much shorter time. People living in the area were horrified when they heard of the one-way proposals, which were not part of the original scheme. Traffic is due to be diverted via the Avon Ring Road, forcing some people to make a three-mile detour. Residents pointed out that banning traffic going up the hill would severely affect the time it would take thousands of people

from Fishponds, Frenchay, and Downend to get to school, college or work in Bristol’s north fringe. They were also angry that the proposal to bring in the one-

way restriction on April 24 was announced at less than two weeks’ notice. After more than 1,000 people signed Stoke Lane Action group’s

petition against the closure, Bristol Mayor George Ferguson stepped in and suggested delaying the closure for a month. This was agreed by Bristol and South Gloucestershire

“What made us angry was the lack of consultation – the fact that it was a given and we could do nothing about it. We said ‘enough is enough’,” said Mrs Vinall. The meeting heard that the closure was to enable the contractors to build a retaining wall alongside the new bus lane. If the road remained two-way, with traffic lights, it was estimated that the work would take 37 weeks Councils and their contractors Alun Griffiths. They said this would make it easier for students at the University of the West of England to ensure they arrived on time to sit their exams. The closure is still set to go ahead from May 22, but the action group has met the MetroBus team and talks are continuing over whether closing the route to northbound traffic is the least bad option. It is also hoped that the impact of the closure can be reviewed after a period of time.

The MetroBus team has also agreed to review bus provision urgently and look at possible solutions around allotment access, mud on the road and provision for cyclists. All these and other related issues were raised at an open meeting organised by the Stoke Lane Action group at Begbrook Social Club on April 19, which was attended by about 200 people. MetroBus was not represented, but Duncan Venison, from Bristol City Council highways department, answered some queries.

5

follow us on Twitter @fishpondsvoice

Neil Collard, Amanda Vinall and Fiona Gleed explained how they had set up the group, organised the petition, a Facebook group and a website in a matter of days because they were fed up that residents were not being listened to over the MetroBus works.

longer and cost £1million more to complete. Mr Venison said he had originally been against a one-way system but had been persuaded after seeing modelling of the impact on traffic patterns. However, the action group intends to challenge some of the models, which members think are based on out of date information. Residents say that the Avon Ring Road is already gridlocked, even before Stoke Lane is closed northbound. More than 2,500 people have now signed the petition, which means that both South Gloucestershire and Bristol councils will be obliged to consider it.

WHAT IS METROBUS? MetroBus is a new bus rapid transport system for the West of England, designed to better connect areas of the city and reduce journey times. It is estimated that travelling from UWE to the city centre will take 15 minutes instead of the current 27 minutes. The work to create a bus lane at Stoke Lane is part of the North Fringe to Hengrove route, which extends from Emersons Green and Cribbs Patchway to south Bristol. It includes bus lanes, a bus-only junction at the M32 andr other infrastructure measures. It is due to be opened in autumn 2017.

Crowds enjoy St George’s Day CROWDS turned out in force for the seventh annual St George’s Day celebration in Fishponds Park. The event was organised by Activate, a group that aims to bring the people of Fishponds together. Free cakes and tea were served by the Methodist Guides. The children were entertained by the Punch and Judy man and the adults by the lively dancing from the Bristol Morris Men. In between all enjoyed the music of Canon Fodder, a local folk band. Mary Barrington, of Activate, said: “Even Specsavers joined in with their balloons and fun bags. It was so good to see such a large number gathering together in the park.” The group also holds monthly lunchtime concerts in Fishponds Methodist Church and in August it will stage its 10th Horticultural and Craft Show.

Fundraising appeal launched for former library CAMPAIGNERS have launched a £20,000 fundraising appeal to help them transform the former Eastville Library, Bristol into a community hub. The building closed as a library in March after 66 years because of budget cuts. A group of residents formed South Lockleaze & Purdown Neighbourhood Group, a community interest company, and successfully persuaded Bristol City Council to let them develop the space. They plan to provide activities and workshops, a community cafe, play area, edible and sensory garden, along with a community-run book swap, computers and lounge space. The facility will be entirely run by volunteers and the intention is for it to be self sufficient, but the group needs money to launch its project, which will serve an area that is among the most deprived in the country. It has started a crowdfunding bid to help it turn its vision into a reality. The aim is to create a hire space, separate from the community space, to provide income. The facilities need to be upgraded, equipped and made accessible. A spokesman for the group said: “People from all walks of life, ages, and backgrounds have used this library space in the past 66 years, and the closure of this space has been devastating for children, adults, families and the elderly alike. “We truly believe that keeping this space for the community is vital to improving the wellbeing and happiness of thousands of residents and visitors to the beautiful green space of Purdown and Stoke Park.” You can find the appeal at www.crowdfunder.co.uk. More than £1,ooo was pledged within 72 hours of the launch. To find out more, email southlockleaze@gmail.com

AN EASTVILLE primary school has written to Bristol City Council to ask why nothing has been done to help pupil safety despite first complaining about traffic problems two years ago. Pupil numbers at May Park Primary have increased considerably in recent years, leading to extra traffic along the narrow roads which surround the school. Staff were so concerned about a child getting seriously hurt that they carried out a risk assessment which identified a ‘serious risk’ of accident. The main problem is the width of Coombe Road, which is too narrow for two vehicles to pass safely. This causes severe congestion as well as frayed tempers. Despite a petition signed by more than 150 staff and parents and a five-point action plan put forward by the school, nothing has been done. Deputy headteacher Stuart Albery said near misses occur on a daily basis: “We’ve begged the council for action and have been asking them for two years to do something.

“We’ve had people from the council come here and scratch their heads and say something could be done but they just go away and nothing gets done. “Meanwhile the traffic is getting worse and worse. It’s dangerous out there but we’ve got no flashing signs, no zebra crossing and no road calming measures in place. We’re a big school but the infrastructure can’t cope.” The school currently has 700 pupils and has the capacity to take on a further 90 which would bring the school up to the size of many secondary schools. The school’s action plan requested: • The introduction of a one-way system, possibly up Coombe Road and down Freeland Buildings • A pelican crossing outside the school across East Park Road • Replacing the white zig-zag road markings with enforceable yellow ones • Extending the zig-zags significantly further along East Park Road • Increasing the height of the raised speed table outside the school

n NEWS as the current low level one is ineffective The council has dismissed some of the suggestions, saying the site “would not meet the strict criteria needed for the installation of a pelican crossing” and that the speed table in front of the school “meets regulations” and cannot be raised any further. The authority also told Mr Albery that it would be very unusual for the authority to change the flow of traffic to create a one way system and if they did, it would take a long time for it to happen. But Mr Albery said it hasn’t been fully explained why these traffic calming measures can’t be implemented. “The council says they can’t raise the speed table but it makes no sense to me. It’s barely a hump at all. Likewise they haven’t explained why a pelican crossing wouldn’t meet the criteria. Just put one in!” Problems have been exasperated because the council has yet to replace the school’s crossing patrol person who left several months ago, although it is believed the post has been advertised. Mr Albery said he feels the school, pupils and parents have done everything in their power to help the situation.

“We’ve done everything we can. We did an online petition and created a travel plan to engage our parents and encourage them to walk to school. We used to have people who lived nearby driving to school but now wherever possible parents and pupils are doing their bit and walking or cycling or parking further away. We provide our children with hi-vis bands and jackets and have really good bike sheds, which are being used. We’ve also been working with Sustrans to teach children about safety and road awareness. “We’re doing our bit but it’s very frustrating because nothing has been done on the council’s part. Every day our parents say to us ‘What’s going on? When will something get done?’ Near misses happen daily and it really is just a matter of time before there is an accident.” Mr Albery said May Park feels like the poor relation when compared with other schools. “We look at other local schools and they seems to have all sorts of flashing lights and zebra crossings but we feel really overlooked and ignored. We contact Bristol City Council all the time but find it so hard to get responses from them. When they came out recently there was talk of limited funds and limited budgets but this is essential - we are

talking road safety for children so that’s not much of an excuse. We’re trying not to be melodramatic but it’s scary out there and we are really worried.” A Bristol City Council spokesperson said: “We are working with May Park Primary School on a number of practical road safety educational activities, including speed awareness and pedestrian training. Following a visit to the school last September, our road

A MUM who says her hair is her pride and joy is preparing to shave her head to raise money for the charity which cared for her daughter who suffered from a rare life-limiting illness. Adele Hamilton, 42, is organising a family community event in Fishponds on June 25 during which she will have her brunette locks shaved off. Money raised will go to Jessie May, the charity which supported her daughter Shannon who died last year at the age of 18. Adele said: “When Shannon was born she had epilepsy, cerebral palsy and was quadriplegic but it wasn’t until she was eight that we had the diagnosis of Rett’s Syndrome. It affected her with severe epilepsy and lots of motor, physical and mental disabilities. “Shannon was four and a half when we were first referred to Jessie May because her seizures were so bad that she was classed as life-limited. “The Jessie May nurses would come to our house four times a month and provide respite for three hours which gave me chance to take my other two daughters, Amber and Taylor, out.” Because her daughter needed 24-hour care, the breaks from

Mum to lose crowning glory in memory of daughter

looking after Shannon were crucial to Adele and her family. “Three hours to some people might not seem like a long time but it was fantastic for us to have that break and be able to do something normal that we couldn’t have done with Shannon.”

After Shannon passed away last February the support from the charity continued. “Jessie May has been with us throughout most of Shannon’s life and when she passed away, they were there for us and will continue supporting us for five years. The

charity gives bereavement support and have a ‘purple group’ for bereaved mums which I attend.” Adele, who lives in St George, said: “Jessie May are absolutely brilliant. I don’t know what I would have done without them and that’s why I do a lot of charity work to support them. I normally run marathons but thought this time I would do something a bit more extreme and have my hair shaved off. “I love my hair and have always had it long. It’s my pride and joy. I had it cut short once and I cried! I have thought it through and I probably will cry again but the charity means a lot to me. I want to raise as much money as I can so they can continue giving support to other families who need help and other children who are very poorly. That means more to me than my hair. My hair can grow back but there are families out there who are desperate for help.”

How you can help Adele help Jessie May BRING your family and friends along to the fundraising event being organised by Adele and her friend Elaine Seretny, who lives in Fishponds. It takes place in the grounds of All Saints Church, Fishponds on Saturday June 25 and will run from 3-7pm. The main event - Adele’s headshave - will take place at around 5.30pm. Entertainment includes a band, children’s games, magician, children’s talent show and dance troop. There will also be a raffle with impressive prizes including a child’s one-hour driving lesson at Cribbs Causeway, boiler service and vouchers for the Kingfisher Cafe. Entry is free but visitors will be asked for donations on the gate. If you can’t make it, you can still donate to Jessie May by visiting Adele’s Just Giving page, www.justgiving.com/adele-hamilton2

Winning awards for their standard of work and customer service

Cycle track clean-up THANKS to a hard-working group of people the cycle track running through Fishponds is looking much tidier now. Men, women and youths from the East Bristol Partnership of local churches chose St George’s Day to pick up rubbish and litter from the cycle track. The volunteers met at The Fish in Fishponds ready to roll up their sleeves and get stuck in. Amy Donaldson, East Bristol Partnership co-ordinator, said: “The group covered the area from the tunnel at Acacia Road to the bridge at the bottom of Ridgeway Road and filled about six black sacks in just over an hour from the rubbish that we could reach. “It was good to be given thanks by many of the cyclists who passed us and it was great to spend this time together doing something for the community. “Perhaps at a later date we can attempt more, especially where rubbish is behind fences. A productive day was had by all!”

Protect your dogs against tick bites THE spread of Babesiosis from Europe has been raised in media recently, causing some concern amongst dog owners. Babesia is a parasite which lives within the red blood cells of dogs and is spread via tick bites. It has previously only been diagnosed in this country in dogs that have been abroad, but cases have now been confirmed in Essex in dogs that have never left the country. It is important to remember that this is a rare disease. Symptoms of Babesiosis are vague and can include lethargy, pale gums, fever and poor appetite. We recommend you phone your vet promptly for advice or get your pet checked if you are worried. Ticks are commonly found in woodland areas, areas with long grass, or where there are numerous sheep or deer. It is unusual to find them in the city, but not impossible. Prevention is key to this disease. We recommend the use of a good quality flea and tick treatment, but it also important to check your dog after they have been for a walk so that any ticks can be removed. Using heat or petroleum jelly stresses ticks, causing them to release their stomach contents back

Parents join in with Sport Relief effort into the pet, increasing the risk of disease transmission. Ticks are best removed with specialist tick removers, which we stock, or if you would rather, make an appointment to see our friendly nurse who can remove it for you. Here at Kingswood Vets4Pets we have recently made changes to our Complete Care plan so that protection with a tick repelling treatment is available – please give us a call on 0117 961 6417 to get more information. We hope this is of some help, please let us know if you have any questions on tick prevention and removal.

IT’S been a busy time for staff and pupils at Chester Park Infant School in Fishponds. First they raised a whopping £372 for Sports Relief after inviting parents to come into school for a dancercise session. Pupils also came to school in non-uniform, many of them wearing sports clothes, and took part in activities to raise money for children around the world. They also took part in an art and recycling week, learning about how to improve the environment. They learned what it means to reduce, reuse and recycle and put it into practice around the school. Everyone created their own unique pieces of handmade paper and contributed to making a large, multi-coloured mosaic using recycled bottle tops, now on display in the playground.

JUST six months after opening Carpe Diem Therapy Centre in Staple Hill, Amanda Staples was diagnosed with ME, or, to give it its proper name, Chronic Fatigue shSyndrome. “I wasn’t feeling particularly well, got a virus and just couldn’t shift it,” she said. “I could hardly get myself out of bed and couldn’t walk without feeling giddy and sick. I was unsteady on my feet and had a fever. As the virus progressed I got lots of leg and foot pain and became hyper sensitive to touch. Even the duvet on my legs would hurt. I walked with a stick because I kept falling over.” Amanda, who lives in Staple Hill with husband Danny, underwent lots of blood tests and through a process of elimination, she was told she had ME. As a busy hypnotherapist, massage therapist and Pilates teacher, the condition couldn’t have come at a worse time. “I panicked thinking I’ve just gone fully self-employed and won’t get paid sick days or holidays. What happens now?!” In the hope of relieving her symptoms, Amanda worked her way through every therapy on offer at Carpe Diem, which she runs with business partner Liz Phillips.

May, 2016

Why me? Amanda’s health woe shows her power of a good diet When Staple Hill complementary therapist Amanda Staples was diagnosed with ME her world fell apart. In a desperate bid to find a cure, she was forced to look at her diet. Much to her surprise, her crippling symptoms improved within just weeks of changing what she ate. Now she has written a book, Eating For Energy, and tells Jayne Taylor it will help not only people suffering from ME but people with food intolerances and even those who feel they just need more get up and go But it was talking to a nutritional therapist at the centre which inspired her to look at her diet, especially as she had developed food intolerances as a result of the condition. “I was fairly healthy but as a means of trying to manage the fatigue I was eating chocolate and carbohydrates to give me energy but I just ended up feeling worse,” she said. “A lot of people who eat carbs get a high and then a slump but I just went straight to the slump. I didn’t recognise that though, so to give myself energy I just kept eating more of the same carbs.” The turning point for Amanda

was when she attended a conscious eating retreat at Littleton Mill, Wiltshire in 2011 which focused on ‘clean’ foods. “I’d changed part of my diet but hadn’t taken all the advice of the nutritional therapist. The retreat confirmed what I’d been fighting against, which was that I needed to change everything I was eating completely. “I learnt very, very quickly that what I ate had a massive effect on what I could and couldn’t do and discovered what foods were better to create energy and what foods took less digestion because you waste energy by digesting. Previously when I had prepared meals I was too tired to eat them but the conscious eating retreat showed me how to make meals which were quick but nutritious.” Miraculously, it took Amanda just weeks to see a change. “I kept tweaking my diet and experimenting for years but throughout that time I kept seeing more and more improvements in my symptoms,” she said. Several years later Amanda is a changed woman, although it would be unfair to claim she is symptomfree. She can now take her two dogs, Oscar and Charlie, on hour-long walks and is able to teach six Pilates classes a week, something she is passionate about. “At one point I thought I would

have to be pushed around in a wheelchair but now I can walk my dogs for up to an hour, play tennis for a short while, swim and do aqua-fit. “Most people look at me now and say there’s nothing wrong with me because I used to look very pale and quite dreadful. However there is still a lot of weakness in my legs and I can’t cycle, run or participate in an hour-long cardio-vascular fitness class. If I over do it my leg and foot pain and flu-like symptoms come back. I now class myself as a ‘recovering fatiguer’.” It was through her therapy work

n NEWS at Carpe Diem that Amanda had the idea to write a book. “Even though I don’t practice nutrition, I seem to come across lots of people who see me with lots of random conditions. I was then getting into a conversation about food and would offer to email them recipes or give them ideas about what to get in for their food cupboard. “I thought why don’t I put everything in a book and then I can tell them to read it.” And this is exactly what Amanda did. Eating for Energy, which came out on April 13, is packed full of recipes which are tasty, quick and nutritious. There are no plates of boiled kale (although Kale Crisps are featured, which Amanda says are delicious) but amongst the offerings are Cheesy Sweet Potato Mash, Upbeet Roasties, Coconutty Choc Granola and Smoking Hotpot. The first 16 pages are devoted to interesting advice about nutrition and diet including a revealing section on ‘proper’ chocolate. The book can help a wide range of people, not just those with ME or food intolerances. In fact, one of Amanda’s relatives came to her for help when her daughter decided to become a vegetarian.

“When I go to friends’ houses or get invited to parties I notice people ask me to bring my courgette bread or my wheat-free tart or chocolate and orange tart. They all love it and can’t believe it’s wheat and sugarfree. People love the fact that these are simple recipes which will keep for a few days, are easy to make and contain ingredients you can buy at a supermarket or health food shop.” Amanda loves the new lease of lease her diet has given her, finding time to write short stories (she has won two competitions) and her first novel. “With ME you can get very depressed and focus on what you can’t do and I spent several years being angry and saying ‘Why me?’ Now I’m much more positive. I have so much more energy and use it correctly. I feel tons better!” Eating for Energy is available from Amazon at the price of £10.99 but can be purchased for £9.99 directly from Carpe Diem and Health Scents, both in Broad Street, Staple Hill.

THE Big Lunch attracted thousands of people into Page Park last year but next month’s event could be even bigger and better. Buoyed by the success of the recent £1.6million lottery grant to improve the park, it is anticipated that many more people will come along to find out more about how the cash will transform the historic green space. The event will take place on Sunday June 12 and will open with music on the bandstand from 10.45am right through until 5pm. Among the acts will be a Flamenco guitarist and dancer, 1940s-style singers The Marionettes and the Westerleigh Showband. Families and friends are encouraged to come along with

Friends of Page Park will have a stand where people can come and find out about how the recent lottery grant will be spent and visitors will be able to talk to project managers from South Gloucestershire Council about the ambitious scheme. VIP guests include Gloucestershire’s Lord Lieutenant, Dame Janet Trotter, and members of the Page family whose ancestor, Alderman Arthur William Page, gave up some of his garden to create the 19-acre park for the local community in 1910. Steph Purser, vice chair of the Friends of Page Park, said: “The Big Lunch is part of the Eden Project and aims to bring people together at various events throughout the country. “Families, friends, neighbours and communities are encouraged to come together for a lunch and to have a really good time.” Steph said last year’s event at Page Park was a huge success,. “It was fantastic,” she said. “The weather was beautiful and we had 6-8,000 people join us.” Meanwhile work on the toddler play area is under way. moved on to the site behind the bandstand on April 18 and started by cutting some trees to make the area lighter. It will feature swings, slides and bespoke wooden equipment made by a Bristol-based company called TouchWood. It is hoped the play area will be open in time for the Big Lunch. Page Park Community Trust has now been set up to manage the community building and look for people to manage the cafe. It is hoped work on the community building/cafe will get underway in September, with a finish date of around Easter 2017. The new path was recently completed and is now open. “Things are moving swiftly and we are all very pleased. It’s very exciting,” said Steph. “We still need more money to help with all of the plans for the park. Slope off and try some Nordic walking THIS group of people, accompanied by Bristol mayor George Ferguson, may look like they’re looking for the nearest ski slope but in fact they are taking part in the latest craze Nordic walking. Nordic walking takes normal walking to the next level, burning nearly double the calories and giving your whole body a workout. And if you fancy giving it a try, there’s never been a better time as a series of taster sessions are on offer during May, National Walking Month. The sessions form part of the city’s month-long walking festival this month called Bristol Walk Fest. Vicky Welsh, instructor at Bristol Nordic Walking, said: “Walking is one of the best exercises you can do. It improves your health and boosts your mood. A brisk 30-minute walk five days a week is also more effective than any other form of exercise for keeping weight down according to recent research. “Nordic walking is just like ordinary walking except that you use two poles angled behind you to propel you forwards. It comes from cross country skiing and takes

walking to another level, turning it into a total body workout by using 90 per cent of your muscles. Once you get into the swing of it you can also burn 46 per cent more calories than ordinary walking.” As well as the free taster sessions, Bristol Nordic Walking holds hour-long fitness walks in Oldbury Court on Tuesday and

Friday mornings which are dog friendly. Another walking option is to take part in the local Saturday morning parkruns such as those in Pomphrey Hill and Ashton Court. Vicky said: “These 5k events are great fun and you can walk, jog, or run the course at your own pace followed by a well earned cuppa in

the café at the end if you want. “There’s never been a better time to get out and get active.” Further information about the Bristol Walk Fest can be found at http://www.bristolwalkingfestival. co.uk. The history that’s lying underneath our feet WHERE might you find the best preserved Victorian coal mine in the UK? Not, it seems, in South Wales or Yorkshire but on our doorstep in South Gloucestershire. The buildings at Brandy Bottom, a stone’s throw from the new estate being built at Lyde Green, might be ruined but they still provide a rare example of the surface layout of a 19th century steam-driven colliery. You’ve probably seen the chimney from the Avon Ring Road but you can be forgiven for not realising what lies around and beneath it. Less than a decade ago, even those walkers, cyclists and riders on the cycle path nearby could not see what was there - it was all covered in vegetation up to 10ft high. Now volunteers have uncovered the remains and are determined not only to preserve them but to make sure more people in the area can get involved in learning what they represent about our area’s heritage. Avon Industrial Buildings Trust is leading the work. It leases the site from Ibstock Brick and has been successful in securing grants to enable professional masons to carry

n The Cornish Engine House out restoration. “Our short term objective is to stabilise the buildings,” explained

Hamish Orr-Ewing, of AIBT. “We need to stop further decay. Our biggest enemy is the weather; the buildings are susceptible to rain and frost damage.” This spring, contractors CWS Landscaping – funded by a grant from Historic England - are using salvaged stone from Pucklechurch and replica bricks specially made by Ibstock to rebuild, patch, repoint or cap various walls to stop the rain getting in. Over time, the trust hopes to recreate some of the buildings and perhaps even rebuild a working steam engine at the site. Its volunteers work closely with others, such as the South Gloucestershire Mines Research Group and Kingswood Museum to piece together the story of the mine and the part it played in the development of east Bristol. “We have a range of talents

and experience and we have built up our skills while working on the conservation project so far,” said Hamish, a retired civil engineer. “The work has revealed lots of finds that give us clues to what was happening here in the 19th century.” The discoveries emerging from under coal dust and spoil include everything from bottles and boots to structural relics. While a lot of scrap metal was removed from the site in the 1960s, there are some tantalising glimpses of its heyday. Detective work using old Ordnance Survey maps and photographs has helped the volunteers understand more about the colliery, while members of the mines research group with caving experience have carried out further investigations. Members give illustrated talks to local groups and are keen to involve local schools in the industrial

archaeology and history that is literally under their feet. The first shaft at Brandy Bottom was sunk 180 years ago, when it was known as Lord Radnor’s Pit. In the early days, much of the work was done by young children, whose small size enabled them to get along the narrow passages, where they would pull heavy tubs of coal along using chains. The practice was outlawed, said Hamish, not because of concern about youngsters working 14 hours a day in the dark and the wet but because of prurient Victorian worries about what might be going on down in the mines. Coal hauled up at Brandy Bottom was loaded on to wagons, initially on the Dramway, a horse and gravity railway that delivered it to barges on the river Avon for industrial use in Bristol and other cities. By the middle of the century, this had been replaced by steam driven trains on the new broad gauge railway. The buildings on the southern part of the site date from this period, and include the chimney, heapstead, Cornish engine house, vertical engine house and old boiler house. Those on the northern side - the horizontal engine house, heapstead and remains of the fan structure - were built after businessman Handel Cossham, who sunk Parkfield colliery in 1851, took on the lease of Brandy Bottom 20 years later, sinking a second shaft. By connecting the two pits underground, he was able to use Brandy Bottom – which he renamed Parkfield South - for both coal

hoisting and pumping from the combined workings. Brandy Bottom is known to have worked four seams of coal: the Hard Seam 512 ft below the surface; the Top Seam at 608 ft; the Hollybush at 638 ft 6 in; and the Great Seam at 674 ft 6 in. It was one of a series of mines from Cromhall in the north to Radstock in the south. But the opening of the Severn Tunnel in 1886 spelled the beginning of the end for the colliery, and others in the Bristol and Somerset coal field. They could not compete with the cheaper fuel that was now available from South Wales, and Cossham’s mining interests were put up for sale in 1900. Coal hoisting at Brandy Bottom appears to have ceased some time between 1903 and 1915. The site was sold in 1937. At some point it became the property of the brick company, but lay unused for most of the 20th century, mainly because there was no road access and most of the surrounding land was in agricultural use. It was this “accident of history’ that meant the colliery footprint at Brandy Bottom remained intact, whereas mines in more populous areas were modernised and later rased and turned into industrial sites. The mine was declared a scheduled Ancient Monument in 2001. You can visit the site, off the Mangotsfield to Coxgrove cycle track, when the working parties are taking place, or you can find out more by visiting the Avon Industrial Buildings Trust website, www.aibt. org

UWE climbs 24 places after student opinion poll UWE has climbed 24 places in the 2016 Whatuni Student Choice Awards, rising above the universities of Cambridge (46) and Oxford (50) to rank 44th out of 125 of the UK’s top universities, the only league table to be based solely on student opinion. A yearly award from the university and degree comparison site, Whatuni.com, the Student Choice Awards rank universities according to student reviews posted on the search site. This year’s league table was based on more than 25,000 student reviews, collated over the last six months covering ten categories, including best students’ union, best courses and lecturers, and most international. All reviews collected are validated by Whatuni’s staff before going live on the website to help future students make informed choices about their higher education options. In the 2015 ratings UWE Bristol was placed 68th, up from 72nd in the 2014 league.

UWE Bristol vice-chancellor professor Steve West said: “We’re very proud of all our students and graduates at UWE Bristol, so it’s great that this excellent result is based solely on the positive experiences they’ve taken the time to share on Whatuni.com. “Feedback from our students is crucial and our year-on-year improvement in these rankings is an important indicator that we’re on the right track. There are exciting times ahead for the university - we’re investing in the future of our students with our ambitious campus masterplan which will include a flagship Business and Law School opening in 2017

and significant investment in state-of-the-art simulated learning opportunities. Through our practiceoriented teaching, established links with hundreds of business and community partners in the West and overseas, we’re securing excellent placement, internship and employment opportunities for our students, creating a workforce fit for the future needs of our society.” UWE Bristol was recently named one of the best young universities in the world by Times Higher Education. The university was included in the 150 under 50 for the first time since the annual rankings were established five years ago.

n NEWS STUDENTS from all year groups at King’s Oak Academy gathered on the 30th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster to hear first hand of the devastation caused by the world's worst nuclear accident. Marina Harodnaya, who is from Belarus and lived through the disaster, spoke to the 160 students, describing how a failed experiment caused a nuclear power plant to blow up on April 26, 1986. During the accident, 31 people died but the long-term effects, including cancer, weakened immune system and deformities, exist to this day. Marina told students how everyday life is affected by what happened 30 years ago and explained how her links to Bristol were forged when she visited the city for a respite holiday in 1998. Marina, who is married with a daughter, is visiting the area to work with the Bristol link of the charity Chernobyl Children’s Life Line, which was formed with the aim of helping the children affected by offering them some relief from the relentless bombardment of radiation. The charity organises visits to Bristol as a month’s respite holiday here helps to boost their immune system by providing plenty of

New faces join the Hillfields beat team

I AM pleased to introduce three new faces to the Hillfields beat team. PCSOs Lisa Stevens, Jenny Rogers and Abi Battersby are now working alongside beat managers PC Richard Glanville and PC Hugh Williams. Please say hello to them when you see them out and about and talk to them about any concerns or issues you have. Last month saw us take part in a range of activities in support of National Rogue Trader Week, which raises awareness of doorstep crime

and the slogan ‘Not sure? Don’t open the door.’ As part of this we ran a vehicle stop checking operation with a range of partners including Trading Standards, council waste management officers, the Environment Agency and the Department for Work and Pensions. All vans on main routes were stopped and had their vehicles inspected and traders were spoken to. Most reputable traders support out action against unscrupulous

rogue traders who bring down the profession’s reputation. Of the vehicles we stopped in our area, three drivers were reported for not having the correct waste licences for carrying scrap and rubbish, one vehicle was seized for having no insurance, two drivers were reported for having no driving licence, and three drivers were issued tickets as their vehicles had dangerous defects. There have been a number of car break-ins recently, what we call

Please remember to remove all belongings from your car when you leave it and of course, to lock it. It’s not enough to put sat navs in the glove box as they can leave a tell-tale tide mark on the windscreen – take them out of the car and leave the glove box open. Pop Saturday 4th June in your diary – it’s our annual 999 Community Fun Day on Barton Fields from 12-4pm. This popular event has loads for all the family including face painting, a BBQ, fairground rides and a fun dog show. Hope to see you there! Sergeant Anthony Westwell

Kerry McCarthy MP for Bristol East

writes for Fishponds Voice

I

HAVE been out talking to voters across Fishponds about the EU referendum in recent weeks, and the thing I hear time and time again is that people feel overwhelmed by the amount of

fishpondsvoice

information being put out by both sides of the debate. Press releases go out every day from the opposing campaigns, saying completely opposite things about key issues: whether it’s security, immigration or the economy. I can understand why people feel daunted by this, so wanted to take this opportunity to set out why I believe Britain – and indeed Bristol – will be stronger by remaining in the EU. While arguments about the referendum can often seem abstract, there are concrete ways in which we have benefited from EU membership. This is particularly true for skills and education: the Vice Chancellor of UWE last month spoke out in support of the EU, noting that Bristol universities have undertaken more than 300 EU-funded research projects since 2009, with a total value of £150 million. University students also benefit greatly from the freedom to study abroad, as do the millions of British expats who currently live and work across Europe. About 3 million jobs in the UK are linked to the EU, and the economic importance of our membership is reflected in the Bristol area. Rolls-Royce and Airbus – companies which employ thousands of people locally and support many more jobs in the

follow us on Twitter @fishpondsvoice

supply chain - have both come out strongly in favour of our membership. And workers at those companies benefit from health and safety law and labour rights agreed at EU level. We have some fantastic green spaces and wildlife which benefit from EU protection. The wetlands at Slimbridge, for example, are protected by the EU Birds and Habitats Directives. The EU has banned pesticides harmful to bees, forced action to clean up our beaches and waterways, and introduced measures to improve air

quality in places of high pollution, including our own city. Nobody could claim that the EU is perfect, but I strongly believe we are better off staying a member and fighting for reform. Whatever your view on Britain’s membership of the EU, the most important thing is that as many people as possible turn out to vote on 23rd June. This referendum will have an immense impact on the future of our country, whether we remain or leave, and it is vital that everyone’s voice is heard.

Making music at BBA YEAR 7 students at Bristol Brunel Academy hit the right note when were involved in a two day project building digital musical instruments from cardboard, plastic cups and tin foil. The project, which involved 20 students, put a plethora of skills to the test including science, ICT, instrument making, computer programming, musical composition and performance. The project was delivered by Dr Jack White from music education charity Conductive Music. One student made a guitar out of tin foil and cardboard and others made instruments that were indefinable and very unique. Once created, the instruments work by connecting them to an interface box and then connecting them to PCs. Using specialist software, the signals can then be turned into any musical sound and

edited. The science angle of the project is introduced when students have to use the process of conductivity to make their instruments work. The aim of the lessons is to bring various subjects together

FishFest set to return Eye Blog . . . in October this year with Jonathan Best of Marian Blake Opticians FISHFEST will return later in 2016 with a series of mini events across Fishponds. Organisers took a break last year while they evaluated the festival, asking for feedback on how it should continue. They have decided FishFest will run as a week-long festival from October 8-15 and will involve various events organised by local groups. FishFest started off in 2009 with just a few community events but snowballed into a festival attracting more than 1,000 visitors. Originally held in the grounds of All Saints Church, FishFest moved to Fishponds Academy where the grounds were bigger. In 2013, FishFest won the Thriving Bristol award as part of the ‘Voscurs’, Bristol’s voluntary and community sector awards. But in 2014 with funding getting more difficult to secure and health and safety procedures to follow, organisers diversified with a series of smaller events held around Fishponds. The aim was to allow people to hold their own events across the area and included a scarecrow trail and family fun days. FestFest stalwart Kate Brooks said: “The idea is - as before - that rather than one big event, we’ll open it up so that anybody can put on their own event anywhere in the greater Fishponds area - that way, everyone and anyone can get involved in whatever way they choose. “It’s also hoped more schools can get involved as schools have told us October is a better time for them. “Expect the usual mix of arts, cakes, community action, music, quirkiness and fun and please be a part of it if you can. We’ll also be looking for volunteers to deliver resources, leaflets, put up posters and other activities.” FishFest 8 will be promoted via social media and with a programme delivered to houses in the area. Groups will be put in touch with each other so they can offer support to others with ideas, volunteers and resources like gazebos and decorations. They will also be able to offer advice on applying for funds, setting up a big event, or sharing a space, a van or volunteer skills. FishFest 8 will kick off with a fundraising alternative 80s disco at the Kingfisher Cafe on Saturday September 17. It is being organised by the people who put on the very popular Thingwalls niteclub events. Any expressions of interest from groups or individuals can be sent to fishfestbristol@gmail.com or via 53 Grove Road, Fishponds, BS16 2BW. Kate said: “It doesn’t have to be sorted and funded at this stage - just an idea and we’ll get back to you in July!”

Two free events at Staple Hill Royal British Legion On June 5, the Legion is running a free event for the Queen’s Birthday. Everyone will get a sandwich and a cup of tea free. Other food and drink will be available. On July 11,the second free event is to commemorate the Somme . Tickets will be required and can be picked up from the Legion or Sheen Studio. Entertainment will be based around the First World War with a variety of acts with an Old Time Music Hall theme.

Colour vision deficiency A TRADITIONAL May day dance is known as Maypole dancing. On May day, villagers used to cut down young trees and stick them in the ground in the village to mark the arrival of summer. The traditional Maypole dance involved skipping around the pole with lots of colourful ribbons – the results were a wonderfully coloured plaited pattern of ribbons around the pole. What’s that got to do with eyes? I think that we sometimes forget the importance of good colour vision in our everyday lives! People with colour vision deficiency are unable to see some colours clearly and accurately. They may find it difficult to distinguish between different colours and it can vary in severity. Some people are unaware they have a colour deficiency until they have a colour vision test at our Opticians! There are three main colour vision deficiencies: red-green colour deficiencies (two separate conditions) blue-yellow colour deficiency (one condition) Red-green colour deficiencies Red-green colour deficiencies are the most common types of colour deficiency, affecting significantly more men (1 in 12) than women (1 in 200). This deficiency means you’ll have difficulty distinguishing between different shades of red, yellow and green, so that: reds, oranges, yellows, browns and greens may all appear to be a similar colour reds, oranges, yellows, browns and greens may appear much duller than they would to someone with normal vision reds, oranges, yellows, browns and greens may only be distinguishable by their slightly different brightness and intensity shades of purple, such as lavender and violet, may be difficult to distinguish and may both look blue because you can’t see the red component in them Blue-yellow colour deficiency Blue-yellow colour deficiency is very rare, and usually associated with a deficit in one of the cone receptors that interpret light when it hits the back of the eye. If you have a blue-yellow colour deficiency: you’ll find it difficult to distinguish

between blue and green green may appear as a shade of blue yellow may appear as a pale shade of grey or purple It’s also known as tritanomaly or tritanopia. Blue-yellow colour deficiency isn’t linked to the sex chromosomes and occurs equally in men and women. Recognising colour vision deficiency Many people first become aware they have a colour vision deficiency when they have a problem identifying colours correctly. For example, a child may have difficulty naming colours or may struggle to read a coloured map or document. It’s important to identify a colour vision problem early.Your child’s learning experience can be adapted if they are diagnosed at an early age and their teachers are made aware that they have the deficiency. Treating colour vision deficiency There’s currently no cure for inherited colour vision deficiency because it’s not possible to repair or replace the cone cells in the retina. However, studies being carried out in America may lead to a cure of some types of colour vision deficiency through gene therapy. Colour vision deficiency doesn’t cause any longterm health problems, so treatment isn’t essential for you to be able to lead a normal, healthy life. If your colour vision deficiency is caused by a pre-existing health condition or from taking a certain type of medication, it may be possible to improve your symptoms by treating the underlying condition or by using an alternative medication. Most people with colour vision deficiency learn to adapt to the condition, and it’s usually possible to find ways to compensate for your difficulty with colours. For example, it’s possible to learn to recognise the position of the lights on a traffic light, rather than the different colours. At Marian Blake Opticians we can screen for colour vision deficiencies as part of our eye examination. If you feel you need to check your colour vision or know a family member or friend that does, please get in touch with us on 0117 9651861.

Please don’t park on pavements IF the people of Stonebridge Park are concerned about safety why are they parking on the pavements so disabled people cannot use the pavement? Mobility scooters have to go down the road, don’t need planters double parking it’s one-way traffic. Why don’t we close Ridgeway? Mr D James

Reclaiming roads for the people THE efforts of Stonebridge Park residents to make their road safer is commendable. Several years back our road was closed for a car-free day. Children played there; we made the acquaintance of unknown

neighbours, and other strangers stopped to talk. I sat outside my gate: it was quiet and fume-free. It’s good when roads are reclaimed for people – cars are a menace when driven with a mistaken attitude: ‘roads are for cars and those who drive them!’ Re-read the Highway Code! Pauline Harvey Fishponds

I say Yes to McDonald’s I SAY yes to McDonald’s in Fishponds. The old tile factory is like a scrapyard and it would look better and tidy with a McDonald’s on it. I don’t know who signed the petition – are they all from Fishponds? Keith Barr Fishponds

Drivers’ attitudes need to change HOW did the residents of Stonebridge Park get permission to create the street pockets, and create artwork on the road? Who paid for them? Can we have breakfast at the tables or are they only for the residents? Who gave permission for the two street

Sport Relief mile for pupils

May, 2016

parties and the road to be closed to cause a nuisance to the rest of Fishponds drivers? Someone is pulling strings! Others are unable to get permission for such things as disabled bays, special access for funerals and other reasons without a great deal of difficulty. Does this mean that other roads can follow suit and get the same permission? How pretty our roads will become, much nicer than having dreaded speed bumps etc. Drivers will speed wherever they go especially those with a bad attitude and no thought for others. I would hate to see a catastrophe occur should it be necessary to have vital emergency vehicles access the road from Channons Hill, such as a gas explosion. The street pockets do cause traffic build at times. Commuters need to use StonebridgePark because of the congestion in Fishponds Road, at the traffic lights on Channons Hill entrance which gridlocks the main road, in both ways towards Fishponds towards Eastville and St George also. I think it is great that there is a good community spirit in Stonebridge Park. It’s like VE Day and after. Children should not play on the road unless seriosly supervised, an abduction could occur, what are their back gardens for? I regularly use Stonebridge Park

and am astounded this has been allowed to happen. Speedbumps could alleviate the speed problems as in other parts of the city even though I dislike them as well. It’s drivers’ attitudes that need to change; consideration by all to benefit everyone. Valerie Faulkner Fishponds

Go back to brushes to clean our streets I WISH to add my complaint about the poor standard of street cleaning. Vassall Court is a cul-de-sac just off the Straits Parade in Fishponds and the road has just 13 houses and a turnaround area. The road has its problems as it becomes a car parking area since the Straits Parade has become a short term limited parking zone. This makes it difficult for the infrequent motorised sweepers and in addition in the turnaround area is small and cannot accommodate this motorised road sweeping. The turnaround area has therefore accumulated a lot of rubbish, leaves especially - which now hide the double yellow lines, which motorists are taking advantage of. Changing back to more frequent brush cleaning would be ideal. JH Griffiths Fishponds

Could you offer these pets a new home? MEET Nibbles and Hoppity. Our beautiful new pair of girls are looking for their ‘furever’ home. They are neutered, two-yearsold and are both absolutely beautiful with their smiling cat faces with heart-shaped eyes. Fergus, our little baby boy, is also looking for a furever home and companion. Have you got a lonely girl looking for a friend? He’s just 12 weeks old and such a handsome chap already! Our next fundraising event is on April 30 at Lincombe Barn. Come along with the kids to see Chase from Paw Patrol and lots more.

EVERYONE at Staple Hill Primary School - children and teachers - completed a Sport Relief Mile in fancy dress. The aim was to do something fun and sporty for a good cause. Some children walked, some ran and some even did the conga. On Friday March 18, all the pupils and staff paid £1 to wear red for the day and learned more about why they were raising money for Sport Relief.

Voice helps spread word on coping with epilepsy FISHPONDS Voice publisher Gary Brindle has handed over books to support youngsters from Barley Close Primary School who may have family members with epilepsy. The book, The Epilepsy Book for Kids, was written and illustrated by schoolgirl Layla Reid when she was just seven-years-old. Layla, a pupil at Staple Hill Primary School who is now 11, wrote the book based on her experience of living with a parent who has epilepsy. Her mum, Sarah, developed the condition after a head injury as a child and now raises money for various epilepsy charities as well as highlighting the condition through talks at schools and organisations like the WI. Mr Brindle, the publisher of both

Downend Voice and Fishponds Voice, said: “We featured Sarah’s story in the March edition of The Voice and I was really impressed with how she had used her own experiences to educate others. “She had encouraged our readers to sponsor Layla’s book to give to local schools and I thought I would buy 10 to give to schools in the The Voice distribution area. “I wish both Sarah and Layla all the best with their campaign work and I’m full of admiration for what they are doing.” Jo Williams, headteacher of Barley Close Primary School, said the books would be a valuable resource for young people in Layla’s position. “As a school we could be faced with the scenario of a pupil having a family member or family friend with epilepsy so it’s great to have a book like this. “It’s reassuring to know there is something child-friendly we can use to support them and it can help to know that it’s not just something that is happening to them; it is happening to other children as well.” Barley Close pupil, nine-year-old Angelika Kolk (pictured), said: “It would be good to read the book if you have a friend who has epilepsy.”

Gary Brindle shows the books to Barley Close headteacher Jo Williams and pupils Felix Edgecombe, 10, Riley Walter, 10, and Angelika Kolk, 9.

Medicinal plants in the Frome Valley

F

ROM mid-April this year, the buds of elderflowers have appeared on the elder shrubs and trees dotted along the riverbanks and in nearby parks. Elderflowers are still widely used to make a cordial or wine, but the elder is perhaps less well known for its medicinal properties. There is a great deal of folklore and magic associated with the plant – it was said to offer protection against evil spirits, and it was considered very bad luck to cut it down. Culpeper, the 17th-century herbalist, describes boiling the bark and root to provoke violent purges, a popular form of treatment at the time. His contemporary John Evelyn wrote “If the medicinal properties of its leaves, bark & berries were thoroughly known, I cannot tell what our country-men could ail, for which he might not fetch a remedy’. Nowadays we use the flowers and berries, and the leaves externally in an ointment for bruises. The blossom induces sweating to break a fever, and helps reduce catarrh. It can also be effective against hay fever and

respiratory infections generally. A good remedy for the onset of a cold or flu is a tea made of elderflowers, peppermint and yarrow. The berries have anti-viral properties and can help you get over colds and flu more quickly – they are very useful in the winter months. They can be made into a syrup, or a ‘rob’, which is a thick juice. When cooked, they can also act as a mild laxative, though do not be tempted to eat large quantities raw! Mrs Grieve, in her book ‘A Modern Herbal’, has the following recipe: Take 5 lb of crushed berries. Simmer with 1 lb of sugar until has the thickness of honey. 1-2 tablespoons can be taken with hot water at night as a cordial. There are many variations of recipes for elderflower cordial, but it is important to preserve with enough sugar, otherwise it can go mouldy quite quickly. When you

Planning matters

THIS month Chris looks at Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas and the new buzzwords surrounding these hot topics WHAT does planning have in common with the British film industry? I am fairly confident that Daniel Craig and Kate Winslet won’t be seen starring in a summer blockbuster about poring through consultation responses in the process of producing a Local Plan. And if they did, would anyone turn up? The British film industry, if it wants to appeal to a

fishpondsvoice

worldwide market, tends to break out the breeches and bonnets and concentrate on heritage. And the connection with planning? It is just a laboured introduction tying in to the government’s buzzword for Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas, which are now collectively known as ‘heritage assets’. Another change is that English Heritage, the organisation with responsibility for protecting these heritage assets, is now known as Historic England. Listed Buildings enjoy a greater degree of protection than any others. Any works to their fabric require Listed Building Consent, obtainable from the local planning authority. In recognition that these buildings were not Listed until this designation was conferred on them by the state, there were two concessions made: Applying for Listed Building Consent does not require a fee to the council and the materials to be used in the works used not to be subject to VAT. In keeping with the everpopular theme of austerity, the VAT concession was removed a few years ago. If you are looking around for examples of Listed Buildings, you don’t have to look too far. Temple Meads Station and the Severn Bridge are both Grade I listed, the highest designation. Below this is Grade II*, where Historic

Campaign for library HUNDREDS of people have signed a petition in support of Downend Library. They are backing campaigners who want to make sure the library stays open five days a week. There’s still time to make your views known: a threemonth consultation on the future of libraries across South Gloucestershire comes to an end on May 13. The council wants to make savings but has promised no changes will be made before October next year. Its favoured option would involve reducing opening hours at Downend Library from 41.5 a week to 18. Emersons Green and Staple Hill libraries would be subject to similar cuts, meaning each would be open on only a couple of days a week. Another idea would see all but five main libraries – Kingswood,Yate, Patchway, Thornbury and Bradley Stoke – closed altogether. For further details, visit the consultation page on the council website or collect an information pack from the library.

England have a say in any proposed development and Grade II, where decisions are taken locally, taking the impact on the Listed Building and its setting into full account.

37

Fishponds

So where would you find Listed Buildings in Fishponds? Well, the biggest attractions in the listing are St Matt’s and nos 11,13 and 15 Manor Road, with their attached garden walls. These are all rated Grade II*. The rest are all Grade II and include the war memorial, the lower lodge, gate piers and chapel at Glenside Hospital, Cossham Hospital, the Old Tavern and also some more unusual features. It is not just buildings and walls that can end up on the List, as the inclusion of a group of three tombs in the grounds of the church of St Mary proves. Not too far away in Downend, there is even a wooden garden seat in a private garden that has been Listed. This demonstrates that Listing can occur whether the public has any right of access to the site or not.

Setting

It is not just the building or structure itself that can be affected by Listing. Anything that requires planning permission that is to be built nearby needs to recognise the existence and the setting of a heritage asset. This also includes development within the same

Chris Gosling cartilage, or grounds. Outbuildings within the curtailed of the Listed Buildings which are mentioned in the Listing are known as cartilageListed and share the same status the Listed Buildings themselves. The design of a development proposal should take full, demonstrable account of the building’s setting and this requirement can lead to potentially fundamental changes in design, such as the removal of parking spaces, for instance, as they would result in the setting of the Listed Building being affected. n GARDENING

Spring has sprung, the grass is riz I wonder where the birdies is The bird is on the wing Ain’t that absurd I thought the wing was on the bird SO goes the poem and so spring has most definitely sprung. Every year this is recited in our house, something we always attributed to Spike Milligan. It turns out to be far from the quintessentially English verse we thought and in fact a poem called Spring in the Bronx from New York. But as long as you’re the right distance from the equator the seasons will change in much the same way. The May Tree (Crataegus Monogyna) or Hawthorn aptly named after the month that it dramatically bursts into life will now be a cream coloured giant ball of candyfloss. We have a mature tree outside our kitchen window and it is a sight to behold, albeit ephemeral as in a few weeks the flowers will be gone. They will be replaced with the fresh green leaves that are synonymous with spring trees and in the case of the May Tree, delicious when added to salads. For several decades, the Woodland Trust has been recording

steadily rising temperatures and as a consequence spring is creeping slowly towards the beginning of the year. The swifts are returning earlier, birds are laying eggs and many trees are unfurling their leaves but most dramatic are the changes to the May tree. Traditionally seen as the start of summer, is the early blossom that we’ve had for the past years an indication of a more permanent change?

Wild garlic

May is usually the month that we first dust off the tent and venture out into the wild as the temperatures have risen to what feels like summer compared to the dreary chill of winter. A month where we walk in the woods for the pleasure of seeing the spring flowers, smelling the fresh young nettles and justifying a pub lunch alfresco. Looking now not for a roaring log fire but instead for the best view. In the west country,

gardener

we are blessed with a smell that where I originated from in the east was much less common in local woodland. That is the smell of the wild garlic. A herb so prolific in these parts it’s hard to imagine that elsewhere in the country it’s a sought after and prized delicacy. A member of the Allium family (Allium ursinum), all parts of the plant are edible although the bulbs are usually too small to be of great use. The leaves, however, are abundant and if eaten raw have a fiery kick that may suit some but can be subdued by blanching. These can be used as a garlicky spinach alternative or cooked with young new potatoes, just search the internet for a host of recipes.

Tender plants

Now that the frosts are now almost certainly not returning until the latter part of the year it’s a good time to get all of the tender plants in the ground. Canna Lilies and Dahlias that have been residing in the greenhouse will all be moved to their summer positions and I’ll be planting out runner beans and sweetcorn. It never ceases to amaze me where the time goes when I’m working outside but if you are a little tight on time each week here are a few tips on how to fill it.

One hour

•Plant some runner beans, I start them off indoors in toilet rolls that just go straight into the ground but if the frost if over just plant them directly. If you’ve not put up any canes do this now but make sure they are at least 8” as runners will just keep going when the weather really warms up. •Keep mowing the lawn, you

can bring the blades down now as the grass should be growing quite happily. •Do a little weeding for a short while regularly to keep on top of them. •Prune spring flowering shrubs after the flowers have faded. •Open vents in greenhouses during warm spells. •Leave the foliage on spring bulbs to die back naturally. •Pinch out the tips of broad beans to reduce the risk of black fly.

Two hours •Put up hanging baskets with summer bedding and trailing plants. Visit a local nursery as the price is astronomically cheaper than at a garden centre. •Take softwood cuttings from plants that have a decent amount of new growth. •Take cuttings from tubers and rhizomes such as dahlias and bamboo. •Write a garden or allotment journal, it will become useful in future to remember what worked and what didn’t.

Making Some Noise for children’s charity Jessie May CHILDREN’S charity Jessie May has received a donation of £42,000 from a campaign which has been running on a local radio station The Make Some Noise campaign aired on Heart West Country has seen money-can’t-buy prizes being auctioned off, as well as other fundraising activities over the course of a year. It has been supported by presenters across the station including breakfast hosts Bush, Troy and Paulina. Media and entertainment group Global, which runs the station, selected Kingswood-based Jessie May as one of the beneficiaries of Make Some Noise, a national scheme which aims to support small charities and projects across the UK making a difference to the lives of young people. Caring for terminally ill children within their own homes in Bristol, Bath, South Gloucestershire, North Somerset and Wiltshire, Jessie May recorded a 20 per cent rise in referrals last year and currently has its highest caseload since inception. The grant will help to ensure the charity has the capacity to respond

to the growing demand in the future, and continue to improve young lives. Jessie May head of fundraising Julian Withers said: “When we found out last year that we had been chosen by Global for the Make Some Noise campaign we were delighted, but never in our wildest dreams did we imagine it would result in an amazing £42,000 donation! “As a small, local charity this

amount of money is a huge deal for us and we couldn’t be happier. Our caseload grows around 20 per cent year on year which means we need to keep expanding and we need the funds to be able to do that. “This donation means that we can fund a specialist Jessie May nurse for one year. This nurse’s role will involve setting new children up on to our caseload and making sure that both they and their families

have all the support they need. “The children we care for have extremely complex needs and are not expected to make it to adulthood so the work we do in making them comfortable and supporting their families is vital. This work underpins everything we do, so another nurse on the team will mean we can react when new families need our help.” Paul Andrew, Heart West Country managing editor, said: “Being able to help support Jessie May has been one of the highlights of the last 12 months for Heart. Not only have we had a lot of fun at a variety of fundraising events but we have got to know some of the families that Jessie May supports personally and seen just what Jessie May Trust means to these families and the huge support they offer.” Jessie May provides a hospice at home service for terminally ill children. It costs around £1,000,000 for the charity to provide this care yearly and Jessie May is almost entirely dependent on public support. For more information visit www. jessiemay.org.uk

Church appeal is tall order

Free parking for carers at Southmead Hospital CARERS of patients at Southmead Hospital will benefit from free parking after the relaunch of a support scheme. As part of the Carers Support Scheme from North Bristol NHS Trust, unpaid carers can now apply for free parking when they visit their their loved one in hospital. They can also apply for an access card that will enable them to get onto the ward and use the staff restaurant. Previously carers could park at a discounted rate on the Southmead Hospital site, but in response to carers feedback, the scheme has been amended to enable carers to apply for free parking. Hospital carers liaison worker, Kate Sykes, said: “These concessions for carers acknowledge the invaluable work that carers do in supporting the person they care for in the ward environment. “They come in and can spend all day with someone if that is what they and the patient want to happen. That is of great benefit to the patients and also for the ward

staff as this helps them more readily meet the patient’s needs in partnership with the carer. “There were concessions for carers previously, but this takes it a step further and has a huge impact all round.” She added: “Providing access to the staff restaurant also makes a huge difference to carers, who are spending hours on the ward every

FUNDRAISERS in Stapleton will find out next month if their application for a £100,000 grant from the Listed Places of Worship Roof Repair Fund has been successful. The team at Holy Trinity Church have managed to raise £38,000 towards fixing the landmark building but their target is a tall order - £240,000. The Grade ll starred listed building is recognised as a fine example of Victorian Gothic architecture. It was built in the mid 19th century from pennant stone quarried at Broom Hill and was dedicated in 1857. Its most notable feature is its 170ft spire, which can be seen from the M32 and from many parts of the city. The congregation is determined to preserve it for future generations. Its next fundraising effort is a concert on Saturday May 7 by the Easton Corp of the Salvation Army. Tickets are £8, available from 0117 9585556 or office@holytrinitystapleton.org.uk

Carers can access free parking and an access pass by speaking to a member of staff on the ward. For more information visit: https://www.nbt.nhs.uk/patientscarers/carers/carers-supportscheme.

Anna takes on challenging ride to raise money for Samaritans charity

New members sought for playgroup

STUDENT Anna Skinner, from Fishponds, is preparing for a cycle ride from Leeds to Prague next month to raise money for the Samaritans. Anna, a student at the University of Leeds, said the journey of more than 700 miles would take her through England, Holland, Germany and the Czech Republic, camping along the way. “I love cycling, but this is not going to be easy - to say the least! I have spent the last few months training around Yorkshire, Somerset and Devon - often in the rain, wind or snow,” she said. Anna will join 35 other students on the challenging ride for the charity, which provides valuable services for anyone struggling to cope. To sponsor Anna, go to her fundraising page: www.mydonate. bt.com/fundraisers/annaskinner1 To find out more about the work of Samaritans visit: www. samaritans.org

with Tim Button, Doctor of Chiropractic at Cleve Chiropractic and Next step in Mangotsfield Blog 28 – Sunshine HAT a difference a month W makes! Here I sit in my garden at 9am enjoying a cup of

tea in the sunshine. I can finally enjoy my garden after I employed a professional to put some artificial grass down for me. We have abided in our lovely little 3 bed home in Downend for 3 years now and whilst all is well in the house, outside the house the lawn has killed me. After 3 winters of back breaking work to try and make grass grow I finally admitted defeat. Each autumn I can hear the Starks from from the North in Game of Thrones whispering

n MARTIAL ARTS A MARTIAL arts club in Staple Hill has proved it is one of the top clubs in the country by winning 25 medals at the UK Chung Do Kwan 2016 British Taekwondo Championship. Competitors from Elite Martial Arts Gym faced competition from hundreds of rivals across the UK in semi-contact sparring, full-contact sparring, patterns and oriental weapons demonstration forms. But it was the Staple Hill club

‘Winter is Coming’. Technically I can make the grass grow each spring but each winter the weather and the poor drainage literally devastates my perfect little back garden haven. This year I counted at least 8 blades of grass left. So enough is enough and now I have my perfect green (with speckles of brown) plastic grass making me feel all warm and fuzzy with happiness, as we have now created a fabulous play area for Molly and Harry. The winter is over and it’s never coming back. Toddler Molly had her 2nd Birthday this month and she can run around and play, helping daddy water the plants. The only danger to my back now is lifting those oversized plant pots and moving them. In the clinic we are already seeing a number of patients coming in with low back pain after gardening in its many various guises. Gardening is a good calorie burner and gets you lots of healthy fresh air but please everybody bend at the knees and use a straight back when you lift a heavy plant pot and try and get some help, things are always easier when there are two of you. If you want to spend some time re-landscaping your little piece of England then please be realistic with what you can accomplish and in what timeframe. So often I here stories from nearly crippled patients from what they tried to

do in a weekend - what a team of professionals landscapers would do in a fortnight. Regular breaks aren’t a bad idea (For me it’s more like work is a break from my breaks in the garden…I particularly like it when Jenny brings me a cool glass of cloudy lemonade giving me an excuse to sit down again. We had a great time this month working in our new oversized pop up gazebo at YOSC (Yate Outdoor Sports Club). We set up a mobile clinic supplying Chiropractic, Physiotherapy, Sports Therapy & Massage for a great day of athletics with over 300 athletes in attendance. As expected we were inundated with Athletes from all over the region and soon enough we started to treat their coaches, friends and family members making for an extremely varied day. The weather held off and the day was a fabulous success so we are now looking forward to the next time. On a family note, our 4 month old baby Harry is now 18 lbs, the same weight as some ‘one year olds’ and is busting out of his 6-9 months clothes. I have made it down to 12 stone and 1 pound and I can now say that I can’t be bothered to keep going any lower. It’s tempting to get down to 12 stone but I also want to eat Molly’s birthday cake (that we purchased from ‘Piece of Cake’ on

45

Downend high street and was so amazing that even 3 days later my staff were happy to demolish the leftovers!) and drink wine on the weekends and not feel bad about it. Here’s hoping that I don’t reach the dizzy heights of 13 stone 6 pounds by Christmas again but no promises. I won’t talk about my wife Jenny’s weight due to wishing to stay in the marital bed but suffice to say she is doing very well losing the baby weight and looks lovely, beautiful and as perfect as ever…please can I go to Vegas on my friend’s stag do in the summer? Oh and anybody else see the exciting new upgrades to the kid’s playground in the King George V park in Downend? That last sentence was my last this month but instead I’ll sign off with this. Molly has just used her new little watering can to top up my cup of tea, then watered her little chair and then promptly sat on it saying ‘wet bottom’ as she looks at me like it’s my fault. Jenny is laughing at me. Oh my life.

Taekwondo team’s triumph which largely dominated the day’s event after twelve club members were crowned British Champion. Although taking a majority of medals, Elite were pipped by just one point for the prestigious National Chung Do Kwan Cup by Manchester Olympians in the final bout of the day. Chief Instructor Andy Davies said: “Unlike a lot of modern martial arts clubs, many of whom operate at a purely recreational level, we take a different and perhaps more professional attitude toward training and in what we expect from our members. “As well as having a strong traditional foundation through the World Chung Do Kwan headquarters in Korea, we also have a strong competitive ethos where we challenge ourselves against many of this country’s, and for that matter, other countries, exponents. It can often be a tough and demanding regime but those who work hard and progress have the chance to attain a very high level of achievement.” The club is offering a month free trial for those who are serious about learning.
