Coat of paint is just the start

McDonald’s tries a new approach FAST FOOD giant McDonald’s has renewed its battle to open in Fishponds by putting forward new plans that include changes to the layout of Fishponds Road. It wants to see back-to-back ‘right turn’ lanes to service its proposed drive-though at the former tile factory and Drummond Road, which is opposite. Its scheme would also include a new pedestrian crossing island near the entrance to the site at 541 Fishponds Road. Opponents say the revised proposals, which will be considered at the public inquiry into McDonald’s appeal against the refusal of planning permission, would create further traffic dangers. Both sides have submitted evidence to the Planning Inspectorate for the inquiry, which is likely to take place in the new year. Full story, Page 3

fishpondsvoice Shedding light on our neighbourhood

November, 2015

NOVEMBER can be a gloomy month – but there’s plenty to cheer you in this edition of Fishponds Voice. Young and old members of our community bring a smile; from 99-year-old bowler Reg Buston in action to the children at Gracefield School with their Zulu dancing and those at Minerva Academy with their Halloween bikes. And we must mention the lovely members of The Hive, who gave us a very warm welcome on our recent visit. We look forward, too, to a sparkling run-up to Christmas thanks to the hard work of Fishponds Business Forum and the widespread support they have gathered from local businesses and organisations for their “retail mile” of decorations.

Bowls hotshots roll back the years IS there something in the water at Begbrook Green Bowling Club? After bringing you news last month of the club’s president Reg Buston, 99 years young and still playing, we now hear that another of the club’s hotshots is John King, who bowls regularly at the age of 95. The three other members of the club’s team are mere spring chickens: Mike Hazell, at number 2 is 77, Maurice Batson at number 3 is 74, as is skipper Alan Dawes, number 4. They reckon this makes the average age of the rink 80 – and are wondering if this is a record. A hotshot is where a maximum score of eight shots is achieved at one end in pairs or fours. It is rare – akin to a hole in one in golf. Reg, who was a founder member of the club in 1994, captain in the 1998-99 season and president since 2000, already has the hotshot certificate, awarded in recognition of the achievement. He presented the certificates to the team, including John, who is also a founder member and is proud of the fact that he holds the unofficial ‘toucher’ record in the club with a total of 14 in a match. Begbrook Green is a thriving mixed club, which welcomes

hockey player, maintains a healthy lifestyle, swearing by meat and two veg daily and a nightly tot of whisky. Alan Dawes told us: “I personally

can vouch for how fast he could run when he caught me playing knockout ginger and gave me a clip around my ear - circa 1952-53!”

Suited and booted for Zulu dance PUPILS from Gracefield School in Fishponds donned wellies to take part in a special Zulu dance with youngsters from South Africa. The visitors were from the Project Zulu choir who are touring the UK as part of the 2015 World Cup to raise money to build new classrooms in KwaZulu-Natal. They taught Gracefield pupils traditional songs and dances culminating in a special joint presentation to parents of The Gumboot Dance, a dance performed in wellington boots. Gracefield School has previously supported Project Zulu through various fundraising activities. Year 6 teacher, Mr Gunter, a trustee of the project, has close links to the children following his experience teaching in the Madadeni township in 2012. Headteacher, Mrs Morgan, said: “Our children had a wonderful time learning vibrant dance routines with the Zulu children. It is an excellent way for our school to link with a worthwhile project that helps the development of educational facilities in another country.”

Traffic fears over McDonald’s plans

A SHOWDOWN between McDonald’s and its opponents over the tile factory site in Fishponds will take place at a public inquiry. The fast food chain’s plans for a drive-through in Fishponds Road were turned down by Bristol City Council in February following a campaign by residents. But McDonald’s lodged an appeal, which will be heard by the Planning Inspectorate at a date yet to be announced. Both the burger giant and the Say No to McDonald’s in Fishponds group have been preparing their evidence for the independent inspector. McDonald’s has come up with

revised plans for the site at 541 Fishponds Road, which include back-to-back ‘right turn’ lanes and a new pedestrian crossing island. But the objectors say the new proposals will create traffic conflicts and will be a danger to drivers, cyclists and pedestrians. Joseph Hassell, chairman of Fishponds Planning, which has been collecting the views of local people, said: “The highway alterations will be not only unpopular but also unfeasible.” He said many residents had been in touch to express concerns about the many traffic permutations that would be created by adding turn lanes and a pedestrian island to the

area alongside parked cars and a showcase bus stop. The impact of cars going to and from McDonald’s on existing – and already heavy – also had to be taken into consideration, he added.

5

Both Fishponds Planning and Say No to McDonald’s in Fishponds expect to make statements at the public inquiry, as will McDonald’s and the council.

Open letter from a mum Dear All, I AM absolutely dreading the day that McDonald’s get the go ahead to open a restaurant in Fishponds. (I hope it never happens).Yes, my children eat takeaway food but we usually do this as a treat; they very rarely eat much of the food anyway as they are more interested in the toy that comes with the meal. If we drive past a McDs or Burger King the kids go on and on for us to stop. Sometimes we do but more often than not we don’t, but we still have to endure the begging and whinging that goes with it. If Fishponds got this restaurant then I think I would have to change my route to avoid it so as not to go through the nagging from the kids for a Happy Meal. My other worry is for my 14-year-old son who attends Bristol Metropolitan Academy. I give him money each day for lunch but I have already overheard his friends discussing going to McDs before or after school to get food. Once a week I would probably allow but I can imagine this would be a daily occurrence which would have such a detrimental eaffect on their health. My son is not supposed to have fizzy drinks because of his teeth and brace but I bet given half the chance would get one if I wasn’t around. I really hope they don’t win this appeal, we could have something much better in its place. Parent and grandparent of children aged 0 - 22

Keeping fit and healthy is really not that scary, say pupils

Your input needed for project A LOTTERY-funded project aimed at developing community services for lonely and isolated people wants to hear your voice. The Bristol Ageing Better programme wants to find out what people, places and attitudes make your neighbourhood a good place for older people to live. If you work, live or take part in leisure activities in Frome Vale, Hillfields or Eastville, you can share your views at a meeting. You are welcome to speak about anything you wish such as transport, leisure activities and things to do. The meeting takes place on Thursday November 26 from 10.15-11.45am at the Beechwood Centre, Beechwood Road, Fishponds, BS16 3TR. All ages are welcome. Free refreshments, including mince pies, provided. For more information contact Dean French on 0117 956 6895 or email deanmfrench@gmail.com

Pupils show off their bikes and scooters which have been transformed with a spooky Halloween make-over years in conjunction with Sustrans, a UK charity which encourages people to travel by foot, bike or public transport. Cath Archer, lead learning mentor, organised the event. She said: “Although this is a great fun activity for the children to take part in, we are hoping this will encourage children to get to school by bike or scooter as part of our healthy living programme. This event is part of a range of activities that take place throughout the year to encourage healthy eating and exercise.

PUPILS from a Fishponds school spooked their neighbours when they rocked up to class on the last day of term. Children from Minerva Primary Academy decorated their bikes and scooters Halloween-style and rode them into school. Two hundred pupils from Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 then took their bikes and scooters into a special assembly where their artistic skills were judged by staff. The school, which is part of the Cabot Learning Federation, has staged this event for the past four

Cool! Blue hue for old library gets warm welcome

A LANDMARK building is breathing new life into the Fishponds' street scene after undergoing a dramatic transformation. The derelict old library on Fishponds Road had been known for its salmon pink colour, which some say was an eyesore. But now new owners Fishponds Church of England Academy have repainted it a smart pale blue colour which matches their school colours. The paint job is part of the revamp of the library by the school following its purchase from Bristol City Council at the end of last year. Builders are now continuing to concentrate their efforts on the inside so the building can start to be put to use by pupils around Easter time. Academy business manager Helen Godfrey said many passers-by had already remarked on how much better the building looks. "We have painted it in our school colours and have kept the old signage saying Fishponds Library

which looks quite smart. "It now looks clean, tidy and new from the outside because it was an absolute mess before. When it was being painted we had lots of comments from people walking by who said they are really pleased the school is keeping the building as opposed to it being knocked down. They also said it had really smartened up the corner." The library closed in December 2011 when library facilities moved to Robinson House, a council customer service point in nearby Hockey's Lane. The school had been in negotiations with the city council to buy the building for two years. Talks were successfully completed at the end of last year when the school took ownership of the historic building. However, when workmen moved in earlier this year they discovered more work than previously thought will have to be carried out before it is in a fit state to use. Ms Godfrey said: "We're getting there. The outside is all done, the windows have been replaced and now we're working on the inside. "It's a building site from the inside, but it looks nice from the outside!" A mezzanine floor has been

put in place to make the most of the space inside, however the stairs are still to be installed. All the lighting and electrics have to be replaced and then the walls can be plastered. Ms Godfrey said the end was in sight: "We're putting it back together again rather than ripping it all out so that's quite exciting." The building will be used for pupils during the day but the school is looking to rent the space out at other times. "We still haven't decided for definite to who or when but we haven't ruled anything out as we

need to make it pay," Ms Godfrey said. There are numerous ideas floating around for how best to use it for pupils but among the ideas is a breakfast club, Esol classes (English as a second language), cookery and music lessons and a sensory corner. The building used to be Fishponds Picture House, a cinema which opened in 1911 and closed in the 1920s when plans to build the nearby modern Vandyck were touted. The council bought it from the owner and opened it as a public library in December 1927.

PRELIMINARY work has begun on the conversion of Beacon Tower in Fishponds into flats. But there is still time to comment on the detailed plans, which have caused some concern because of the limited car parking provision. The Fishponds Planning group supports the view of a number of people living in the neighbourhood that 27 spaces is inadequate for a development that will house up to 72 people. A number of residents have lodged objections on Bristol City Council’s planning website, expressing their fears that occupants of the flats will park on neighbouring roads, which are already heavily congested. One opponent said: “It’s bad enough trying to park on Grove Park Terrace and nearby streets as it is, so where do you think these extra cars are going to go?” Another said: “A higher volume of people trying to park in this area will inevitably increase the number of vehicles of all sizes using these roads, severely compromising road safety. The situation is already dangerous, double parking allows the passage of only one vehicle at a time along many of the roads and large numbers of people ignore the 20 limit signs. Also parking right up to corners severely restricts visibility when turning at junctions.”

The Home of Quality Carpets

November, 2015

Where will flats residents park? Other residents expressed fears that emergency services would not be able to get past the parked cars. Objectors are calling for an underground car park or a twostorey car park to be provided as part of the development of 29 twobed and 15 one-bed apartments at the tower, which is at the corner of Fishponds Road and Lodge Causeway. The developers already have permission to create 38 flats in the eight-storey 1970s former office block alongside the Department of Work and Pensions offices at Lodge House. They are now asking to create six more flats on the top of the tower, which would be done without increasing the overall height by using the area where air conditioning units and aerials are sited. Architects dropped a proposal to create an additional storey after representations from Fishponds Planning. Its chairman Joseph Hassell said the group was working with the architects in the hope of continuing to improve the plans. He said the concerns over parking were well founded and pointed out that although the

planned provision of 56 secure cycle parking spaces was welcome, this would not stop occupants of the flats from also owning cars. The developers said that their proposals, which will see the building largely painted “ivory white” plus some cladding with coloured panels, will greatly improve the austere, utilitarian and outdated building. “The design approach will enhance the building’s existing drab appearance and greatly improve local visual amenity by creating a positive character of the landmark building,” they said. The revised plans will be considered by Bristol City Council planners. Residents have until November 9 to comment online. The reference is 15/04378/F. Mr Hassell added that the planning group was negotiating the

introduction of pedestrian safety railings at the junction of Lodge Causeway/Fishponds Road/Beacon Tower service road entrance, which it considers to be potentially hazardous to pedestrians.

Were you born at Southmead?

Fishponds Planning in ‘come and join us’ call WOULD you like to have a voice in determining the future shape of Fishponds? A group of volunteers who have started doing just that are keen to get more residents to join them. Chairman Joseph Hassell explains: “As you’re no doubt aware, Fishponds is going through a period of quite rapid development - from changes to retail outlets at Straits Parade and Fishponds Road to major development plans for St Matthias Campus, Glenside, Blackberry Hill Hospital, Diamonite Business Park, the old Regal Garage site and a new school at Abingdon Road playing fields - some aspects of which you may welcome and others you may not. “Recently a small group of local residents, just like you, formed ‘Fishponds Planning’ with the intention that the community should be given a greater say in the future development of the area. Fishponds Planning communicates directly with developers, architects and planning officers to try and achieve improved planning outcomes for the local community.” The group is obviously keen to have involvement from anyone with planning, legal, architecture or any other relevant expertise but will welcome anyone who is interested in enhancing the area. “We are very keen to become more representative of the whole greater Fishponds community and would love to hear from older men and women and people from ethnic minorities.” The group meets monthly and is already involved in several projects. It is a sub group of Greater Fishponds Neighbourhood Partnership and its long term aim is to create a Neighbourhood Development Plan. Its main focus is on reflecting the widest possible range of opinions from the community – so it says you can expect to see members regularly outside Lidl or Morrisons with questionnaires. THE maternity team at Southmead Hospital is preparing to celebrate three decades of the Central Delivery Suite. It opened in the autumn of 1985 and babies born since then - and their parents - are being asked to come forward and share their stories. Were you born on the same day as a family member or a Royal? Did you give birth to twins, triplets or even quads over the last 30 years? Was your midwife a childhood friend you were reunited with in the delivery room? Southmead Hospital midwifery matron, Cathy Molloy, said: “With thousands of babies born at Southmead every year it is important that some of the people who have started their lives here should be part of these landmark celebrations.” Contact the hospital via the website: http://www.nbt.nhs.uk/maternityservices/maternity-services/help-celebrate-our-30th-birthday

Panels and book to go on display this month ENAMEL panels and a “Domesday-style Book” created in Fishponds for Bristol’s year as European Green Capital will go on display in the area this month. Visual artist Barbara Disney and poet Karen Hayes have worked with residents of all ages to create these pieces of art that reflect the lives of people in the area. Their project, entitled Where Two Roads Meet, aimed to celebrate the identity of Eastville and its links to greater Fishponds. They held talks, workshops and guided walks where local people were encouraged to share their stories.Karen wrote down what they said and turned their thoughts and experiences into “verbatim” poetry while Barbara encouraged people to participate in a range of arts practices including printmaking, collage, illustration, and painting. Some of the events took place in community spaces such as The Haven and Elm Tree Farm, which gave the artists a chance to capture a unique snapshot of life in the area. Other workshops were held at the old bus depot on Lower Fishponds Road, which older participants remembered as a thriving residential area before the M32 was built. Children from May Park and Glenfrome Primaries were encouraged to exchange stories with older residents, focusing on their respective routes to school. The children from May Park created a map, which forms the cover of the A3 book. The enamel panels, incorporating residents’ designs, have been made from recycled materials such as old oven doors. A launch event will be held on November 19, from 1.30 to 3pm, at Fishponds Library. The enamels and book will be laid out for viewing, and Karen will be reading some of the poetry created out of the people’s stories. The book will remain at the library in its own handmade and decorated box. The enamels will be installed in spots near where the material was generated, for instance where workshops were held, where passers-by can see them. Toy exchange at Barnardo’s A FISHPONDS charity shop is helping to promote a national “toy exchange” to raise money for vulnerable children. The Barnardo’s team on Fishponds Road are inviting residents to give a new lease of life to pre-loved teddy bears, dolls, action figures and games. Supporters can take donations to their local Barnardo’s or Argos stores until November 20 in return for a £5 voucher towards the cost of new toys (minimum spend £35) to be redeemed at Argos by December 24. This is the fourth year of the campaign, which last year raised £560,000 for the charity. Barnardo’s shop manager Caroline Gregory (pictured) said: “The Argos Toy Exchange encourages people to think about recycling their unwanted items, and the funds raised will help to make a big difference to the lives of vulnerable children across the UK. “We support some of the most disadvantaged children and young people, such as those growing up in poverty, and those living in care. “Over the last four years the toy exchange has received generous support from the local community and hopefully this year will be the best yet. “Every single donation will help us to give children and young people a better start in life.” Visit www.argos.co.uk/ toyexchange for further details The Barnardo’s Fishponds shop is always happy to receive donations of goodquality clothes, books, toys, games and accessories, as well as offers of help from potential volunteers.  Call 0117 965 8846.

Get set for great Christmas lights

FISHPONDS is set for the brightest Christmas of the century with lights glowing along the full length of the shopping mile. Support for the first organised display since 2003 has been overwhelming, with more than 40 business and organisations signing up for an illuminated tree. Leigh Cooper, from Fishponds Business Forum, said he was delighted. “With this being the first for 12 years, we had thought we might get about 20 sites but we have achieved far more and others are still signing up. Lights will be displayed along the ‘retail mile’ from the Fire Basket by Elmgrove up to the police station and the Cross Hands,” he said. “We think this will be a tremendous boost to the whole community and we are very grateful for the all the support we have received.” Among those taking part are the four charity shops, Lidl, Sainsbury’s, Coop, Timpsons, Barclays, Café Grounded, Kingfisher Café and both Beverley Watkins and DavisWood legal practices. Sponsors include BAC Fire and Security, Ron Clark Electrical, SM Gauge, EDA Domestic Appliances, Greater Fishponds Neighbourhood Partnership, Activate Fishponds, Fishponds Planning and Fishponds CE Academy. The academy will have a tableau within its grounds and has agreed to have lights around the old library, which is now part of the school. It is also hoped there will be lights in Fishponds Park. The scheme has received a boost from Bristol City Council, which waived the cost of a licence application for the lights this year. The big switch-on event is planned for November 28. Ease your pet’s joints PUB trivia! Arthritis is derived from the Latin for joint inflammation. Arthritis can be age related or triggered by joint disease, with some breeds being more prone to problems. It is a painful condition with signs often creeping up on pets and their owners. Often the main sign is the pet slowing down a bit as they get older, and we find cold weather often makes it worse. Other signs can be withdrawing from human and animal company, chewing over joints, limping or a stiff gait. Cats may sleep more and be less willing to jump. Management is tailored to the animal, often including joint supplements which can slow down further destruction in the joint. In later stages pain relief is required to help make your pet more comfortable. Please remember not to give human medications to your pet, they are often dangerous and can cause serious health problems.

Exercise should also be altered, e.g. short regular walks with the option of hydrotherapy for dogs. Changes to the house are often beneficial such as reducing the amount of slippery flooring by putting rugs down, or using paw wax. For cats, horizontal scratching posts are a great way to keep their claws in check! Warm places with soft bedding should be available to rest which can ease aching joints and offer some minor pain control. Also consider whether your pet can get to food and water bowls easily, and whether stepping into a deep litter tray is causing discomfort. If this is something you are concerned about, be sure to talk to your vet or nurse as we are here to help! Improving our golden oldies’ senior years is important to us, so call us at Kingswood Vets4Pets on 0117 9616417 to discuss what we can do for your pet.

FASHION lovers in Fishponds with an eye for a bargain could do worse than head to the area’s two St Peter’s Hospice shops, which have both recently been refurbished. The Lodge Causeway shop has been spruced up with a paint job and its children’s department has been brightened with a colourful rainbow display while the Fishponds shop has expanded into the shop next door so it can offer a furniture department without having to cut back on clothes and other goods. St Peter’s Hospice has a total of 47 shops across the city, which help generate money towards the £18,000 a day needed to run the hospice at Brentry. The autumn and winter fashion range includes pre-loved items from brands like Topshop, Boden, Ben Sherman, Dune, Zara, Laura Ashley, The White Company, River Island, French Connection and Next. Victoria Canavan, shop area manager for St Peter’s Hospice, said: “The autumn and winterwear we have in stores this year is fabulous! “We regularly see designer items being donated to our Fishponds store and we go on to sell them for less than half the original price so it’s brilliant value for anyone who takes an interest in fashion but doesn’t want to pay full whack. “We’ve got so many hidden gems on our shelves - you never know what you’ll find.” The St Peter’s Hospice winterwear campaign this year includes posters and marketing materials featuring local supporters, staff and volunteers modelling the clothes, shoes and accessories available. Victoria added: “Updating your style for winter of course means making room in your wardrobe and we greatly appreciate any donations we get. Without your wonderful help we would not be able to fill our shops with lovely items and we would not be able to continue supporting those in Bristol who need us.”

Put on your dancing shoes THE 2016 St Peter’s Hospice Strictly Come Dancing competition has been launched by Casualty actress Sunetra Sarker, who took part in the BBC1 dancing show last year. The charity competition will see 12 couples receive nine weeks of professional dance training at Creative Youth Network in Kingswood before putting on their dancing shoes for a live Grand Finale performance on March 6. To sign up, couples must pay a £30 entry fee and raise a minimum of £500 sponsorship between them. Registration closes on Sunday 29 November. Not all applications may be successful. Sunetra said: “I was lucky enough

to visit the hospice earlier this year and I saw first-hand what truly amazing and inspirational work they do as a charity. End-of-life services like this are so important both to the patient and their families and any funds this event raises goes towards supporting people who need it. “I also have first-hand experience of taking part in Strictly so I know the couples who sign up are in for a fabulous time, learning new moves and performing in front of the audience! I wish them all the best of luck.” For more information call 01275 391428 or email maria.moonpark@ stpetershospice.org

Living history lesson as teen sweethearts share their golden memories at school ROGER and Morfydd Saunders found a unique way to mark their golden wedding – they went back to school. It was a fitting way for the couple to celebrate because the school in Mangotsfield was where they met. Roger and Morfydd were among the first pupils to join Rodway Technical School when it opened in 1957 and they returned to tell current Mangotsfield School Year 7 students what the school was like in its early days. The couple explained to the 11 and 12-year-olds that the new school had given them an important second chance after they both missed out on places at grammar school. Morfydd, who was brought up in Wick, started at the secondary school in Oldland that is now The Sir Bernard Lovell Academy after failing her 11-plus while Roger went to a secondary modern in Woodstock, Kingswood. But at the ages of 13 and 14, they passed exams to get in to the new Rodway school, which had excellent facilities for the time in science, engineering and domestic science. “It was a great start in life for my wife and myself,” Roger told the students. The couple described the formal dress of their teachers, who all wore gowns and mortarboards, and their own strict school uniforms, including blazers and berets for the girls and short trousers and caps for the younger boys. They had fond recollections of the school, where both were prefects and participated in many sporting activities, plays, trips and after-school clubs. Morfydd recalled that if she stayed late, there was no bus home; she had to catch the steam train from Mangotsfield

Roger and Morfydd mark 50 golden years station. The Mangotsfield students asked their visitors a number of questions, such as: Did you have tutor groups? What did you play? How much spending money did you have? What were school dinners like? The answers highlighted many changes – Mangotsfield was just a village six decades ago; there was little traffic so children could play in the road: families grew most of their own food; bread, meat, coal and groceries were delivered weekly – but also many similarities with school life today, including moans about the meals! Students were interested to hear about the handwritten reports, unlike today’s computerised versions, and about raps on the knuckles with a ruler and flying blackboard dusters. After the lesson, head teacher David Spence showed Mr and Mrs Saunders around the school. It has expanded since their day but parts of it are little changed. “It’s exactly as it was,” said Morfydd, 71.

words to me were, ‘What a complete and utter waste of time that was. I understand you’re getting married,” she said. Undeterred, Morfydd became a ward sister at 23 and worked at Frenchay, Bath, Bristol Eye, Bristol General and St Michael’s hospitals and the Central Health Clinic in her long career, taking only three years off when her sons were small. Roger and Morfydd wed at the Tabernacle United Reformed Chapel in Wick on September 25, 1965, coincidentally the day the shopping centre opened in Yate, where they made their home. They have two sons, Peter and Neil, and three grandchildren, India, nine, and Harvey, seven, who attend Mangotsfield CE Primary, and Louisa, 18 months. Peter and Neil came up with the idea of the school visit as a way to make the anniversary a day their parents would always remember. Peter, who lives in Siston Hill, said: “I think it is great that the school went out of their way to welcome my parents. I have travelled and worked all over the world but have always based myself in Bristol. This story Roger, second right at back, in the cricket team reminds me of why that might be.” The couple, who now live in Wickwar, went on to have successful careers after leaving Rodway. Roger, 72, who loved art – he still paints – joined Redcliffe Inks, which supplied ink for packaging, and worked for what became AS&A Robinson for 42 years. Morfydd became a nurse and qualified in July 1965, three months before her wedding. “Matron’s

National award for HEFs in Bloom FISHPONDS has won a national award at the first time of entry in the Royal Horticultural Society Britain in Bloom competition. HEFs (Hillfields, Frome Vale and Eastville) in Bloom won a silver award in the urban communities category, putting it among the top six urban communities in the country. Organisers are delighted at the area’s success and say they are already making plans to enlist further support so they can do even better next year. RHS Britain in Bloom is a nationwide gardening campaign that has been helping people to improve their local environment since 1964. More than 1,600 groups participate each year focusing on community action to transform spaces. Mark Logan and Denise James, from HEFs in Bloom, said it was the community aspect of the various gardening projects in Fishponds that was its greatest strength. The judges, Rae Beckworth and Darren Share, told them: “It was very clear to the judges that this quite new community entry is driven by passion. The journey that various groups have taken has seen many interesting changes that are enhancing the three wards invovled

in the HEFs entry. Much work is still ongoing, with plans in place to achieve the desired outcome. There is little doubt that the community groups involved are making a real difference to their community.” Denise said the judges felt that everyone they met when they visited Fishponds was doing their very best to transform the area. Extra help on offer for young adult carers A NEW service has been launched to support young adult carers who find themselves juggling the demands of looking after a loved one alongside the strain of trying to find their own path in life. Whether they are studying for exams, applying for college or seeking work, life can be tough for young people when they are also caring for someone close to them. But now the Fishponds-based Carers Support Centre has launched Time for Change aimed at supporting carers aged 16 -25. The charity, which is based at the Vassall Centre, has received two year funding from Carers Trust to set up the project, which has been developed in consultation with local young adult carers. The funding will allow Carers Support Centre to work with 60 young people and will complement the work that they already do with children under the age of 18, providing transitional support into adulthood. The work will include providing intensive one-to-one support to 20 of the most in need young adult carers as well as delivering training to give young people the skills to communicate with health and social care providers. There will also be support in issues outside their caring

roles such as health, housing and employment. Through links with further education colleges and universities, the project aims to improve education, apprenticeship and work opportunities. Keith Sinclair, chief executive of Carers Support Centre, said: “This vital funding will help us to support young adult carers in Bristol and South Gloucestershire. “These young people are at a

crucial stage in their lives, and can feel alienated and unable to have life goals like their peers because of the demands of their caring role. It is a time when big decisions can affect the rest of their life and their future chances to work or gain new skills. We will be able to help them to make plans for their future and have the same opportunities as other young people.” Carina Andrews is a young adult carer who cares for both her

Carina, who has has been involved in the development of the project, said: “This is a really exciting project aimed at supporting and empowering young adult carers. It’s about recognising them as individuals: working with their hopes and aspirations for themselves.”

November, 2015

E: news@fishpondsvoice.co.uk

A LANDLORD has been fined after failing to make sure his house in Fishponds met fire safety regulations. Yasar Ahmed pleaded guilty to failing to comply with a housing improvement notice at the property in Fishponds Road and was ordered to pay a fine and costs totalling £1,863. Bristol City Council environmental health officers visited the house, which was let to three tenants, in the summer of 2014 after receiving a complaint about the living conditions there. Officers discovered a fire hazard at the property and served a notice requiring Mr Ahmed to carry out works including the installation of a fire alarm system, works to the kitchen door and repairs to the kitchen ceiling and a bedroom door. The work should have been completed by the October 9, 2014, but upon inspection in December 2014 and March 2015 they had still not been done. Mr Ahmed inherited the property and employed an agent to assist with the management of the property but failed to ensure the agent had completed the works requested of them.

Since proceedings began, Mr Ahmed has arranged for the works to be completed and the notice was complied with by July 2015. Councillor Brenda Massey, Assistant Mayor for People, said: “The council will not tolerate landlords or agents failing to meet their legal responsibilities in relation to private sector tenants. “This property is in the proposed new Discretionary Licensing area and is just one example of poor housing conditions found by private housing. “Such cases are part of the reason why the council is currently consulting on the introduction of a licensing scheme in this area.” Bristol City Council is currently consulting on the introduction of two more discretionary licensing areas in Bristol. Discretionary licensing places conditions on the landlord/agent to ensure that minimum property standards are met and that good management practice is delivered. Following the success of a discretionary licensing scheme in the Stapleton Road area, the council is now considering extending this approach to parts of St George and Eastville.

RESIDENTS of Trendlewood in Stapleton enjoyed a Sunday community get together, which included fun for pets as well as people!

The reserves are statutory sites protected by law and each one is a special place for wildlife to thrive and where people can visit to enjoy nature. Bristol City Council is encouraging citizens to get closer to nature by visiting the sites, which are open every day and are free. Four new sites were recently added to the network in recognition of Bristol’s European Green Capital year. The students were joined by Councillor Daniella Radice, assistant mayor for neighbourhoods with responsibility for the environment. Cllr Radice said: “I am delighted that we have four new local nature reserves in Bristol this year. It’s great to see secondary school students

using them as outdoor classrooms and getting to know their local wildlife.” Cllr Radice added she hoped that having new nature reserves will inspire people of all ages to get involved in protecting the planet. Kathryn Tinker, head of geography at Bristol Metropolitan Academy, said: “Our students have come here at the start of their GCSE geography course to practice their map-reading and compass skills. We hope to visit again soon

to find out more about ecosystems, food chains, habitats and their management.” For more information about Troopers Hill and its nine trail activities, go to www.troopers-hill. org.uk

Careers day at Bristol Met THOUGHTS turned to the future when students at Bristol Metropolitan Academy in Fishponds attended a special careers day. Year 11 students took part in more than 25 motivational workshops as they considered their Post 16 career options. For those aiming to be doctors, lawyers, engineers and nurses, there were occupational and academic workshops offering careers advice. There were competitions for the best business dressed girl and boy, a fashion show and one-to-one coaching from civil servants. Tickets for a Bristol City game were also up for grabs for the two most impressive students. The event was supported by international law firm DAC Beachcroft. Tim Holmes, advice and guidance leader, said: “With this subject high on the political agenda, it is vitally important that we discuss with students at this stage in their educational careers their possible next steps. The response from organisations, wanting to take part in this event has been overwhelming and I would like to extend our thanks and gratitude to all those involved.”

Town Green campaign for Colston’s Field A NEW battle is under way to prevent any future development on a corner of Colston’s School playing fields in Stapleton. Bristol City Council planners threw out a scheme for a small housing development on the plot following a successful campaign by residents, who said the beautiful Frome Valley must be protected. Developers Woodstock Homes and the school announced they would not contest the decision over the section of the 30-acre grounds that borders Welsford Avenue.

Now the campaigners are pursuing their attempt to have the land declared a Town Green, which would secure it as an open space. They fear that otherwise the site might be targeted again in the future. Local people say that although the land belongs to the school, it has been used freely for decades by people walking their dogs, having picnics and picking blackberries. The school is objecting to the request, saying it would put at risk the security and welfare of

the pupils and could even hamper Colston’s being able to use its own playing fields. The landowners say signs have been displayed at the site since 1988 warning: “Private No Unauthorised Access to Playing Fields.” The decision by Bristol City Council will hinge on whether the applicants can prove that the land has been used by a significant number of local people as of right for lawful sports or pastimes for the past 20 years.

Hive’s got a great buzz about it

ITS name – The Hive – is very apt, because this drop-in centre in Kingswood is always buzzing. It’s a place where anyone is welcome, whatever their disability. The Hive has been around for a long time; opening in 1968 as Avon North Mencap. Five years ago, it disaffiliated from the charity and assumed its new identity. Chief executive Liz Cooke explained: “When Bristol and South Gloucestershire local authorities began closing their day centres, families of people with learning disabilities wondered where they would go. We have expanded our services to meet that need.” People come from all over the two areas to attend the daytime sessions, which are held on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays and the evening sessions on Mondays and Wednesdays. Some come with carers and some independently, often taking two or three buses to get there. They often catch up with old friends from school or college and they make new friends. “Some are here every time we are open, some once a week and some once a month,” said Liz. “They don’t have to book in, so we never know who’s going to be here. That changes the dynamic and ensures it doesn’t become boring.” Activities include pool, air hockey, pinball and karaoke as

Hive members Josh Rees & Will Lake with some of their paintings well as a coffee bar. There’s also a sensory room and regular discos. Members can take part in the Gateway Award, a Duke of Edinburgh-style programme designed for people with learning

disabilities. A recent innovation is a self-advocacy course. “The Hive is not prescriptive. It is really led by the people who come and what they want to do. For those who live independently, it helps to

prevent them becoming isolated.” The centre has about 200 members, aged from 18 to the two oldest, twins Jack and Pearl, who are 76. Liz said this is “just the tip of the iceberg”. Luke, 19, from Downend, said he loves coming to The Hive. “I like meeting new people. I like spending time with my friends. And I like thinking of ways we can make The Hive even better,” he said. The Hive relies on volunteers to support the members and is keen to hear from anyone who would like to join the team. It urges potential recruits not to be put off by the fact they don’t know anything about learning disabilities. “It is not as scary as people think,” said Liz. “People find it very rewarding. All the volunteers do it because they love it.” Cath Haynes, who started volunteering in January, said every session is a happy one. “I always go home with a smile on my face” she said. Members from The Hive have even taken part in the television series The Undateables to help break down barriers and improve public understanding. The centre has recently opened

Stick sequins on your trainers!

WOMEN will have chance to shine this month at a free glitter run being held in Stoke Park Estate. The event, on November 15, is part of the ‘Bristol Girls Can’ campaign, and is encouraging all women to take part, regardless of their age, ability, shape or size. Those attending can walk, jog or run any distance between one and six miles – but sequins and glitter are a must! The course, which will cover Lockleaze Open Space, will be marked out as a one and two-mile loop. Competitors can sign in from 9am onward, where they will receive a limited edition t-shirt. There will also be opportunities to have faces painted in glitter and photographs taken. A warm-up will start at 10.45am, with the race commencing at 11am. For more information, and to sign up, search ‘Bristol Girls Can Glitter Run’ at: www.eventbrite.co.uk Hive member Sean Twomey with the Lord Mayor of Bristol Clare Campion-Smith a new art studio, offering art and pottery classes, and last month members held an art exhibition where they were honoured to welcome the Lord Mayor of Bristol, Clare Campion-Smith and the chairwoman of South Gloucestershire Council, Erica Williams. “The idea of this art exhibition was to make more people aware of the abilities of our members rather than focusing on their disabilities,” said Liz. “We have found that art is a great way for people - especially those with communication difficulties- to express themselves and we also recognise the

therapeutic benefits this provides.” International cricketer and local professional artist Jack Russell endorsed the exhibition too. “For an artist there is nothing more satisfying than creating your own piece of artwork. For others to enjoy it as well is extremely rewarding. This particular art exhibition at The Hive is a big positive for the whole community,” he said. • If you would like to help out at The Hive, please email volunteers@ thehiveavon.org.uk or call 0117 961 4372. The centre is also always in need of fundraising support.

Riff Raff Fishponds celebrates first birthday THE FISHPONDS arm of Bristol’s Riff Raff choir has celebrated its first birthday. The group, which meets on Thursday evenings at the Cross Hands pub, marked the occasion with chocolate cup cakes. It was part of a double celebration as the choir’s Southville group celebrated its fifth birthday at the same time. Following the choir’s sell-out concerts and an appearance at Bristol’s Make Sunday Special this summer, Riff Raff also appeared at the city’s popular Festival of Song in October. Members took part in ‘Song Raids’, appearing in a series of singing flash mobs at various

current UK chart songs. Originally co-founded by Elaine Wilson and Joe Blench in 2010, the choir has grown in popularity, soaring from 50 original members

Ingredients

4 medium sweet potatoes* 1 15-ounce can chickpeas, rinsed and drained 1/2 Tbsp olive oil 1/2 tsp each cumin, coriander, cinnamon, smoked (or regular) paprika Optional: Pinch of sea salt or lemon juice GARLIC HERB SAUCE: 1/4 cup hummus (or tahini) juice of 1/2 lemon (~1 Tbsp) 3/4 - 1 tsp dried dill (or sub 2-3 tsp fresh) 3 cloves garlic, minced Water or unsweetened almond milk to thin Optional: Sea salt to taste (I didn’t need any)

Instructions

1. P reheat oven to 200c or gas 5 and line a large baking sheet with foil. 2. R inse and scrub potatoes and cut in half length wise. This will speed cooking time. Otherwise

November, 2015

Roasted Mediterranean Sweet Potatoes From The Kingfisher Cafe leave whole and bake longer (approximately double the time (45 min - 1 hour). 3. Toss rinsed and drained chickpeas with olive oil and spices and place on a foil-lined baking sheet. 4. R ub the sweet potatoes with a bit of olive oil and place face down on the same baking sheet (or another baking sheet depending on size). 5. While the sweet potatoes and chickpeas are roasting, prepare your sauce by adding all ingredients to a mixing bowl and whisking to combine, only adding enough water to almond milk to thin so it’s pourable. Taste and adjust seasonings as needed. Add more garlic for more zing, salt for savouriness, lemon juice for freshness, and dill for a more intense herb flavour. I found mine didn’t need anything else. 6. N OTE: If you don’t have hummus, tahini (which you can DIY!) will make a great base substitution for the sauce - just adjust the seasonings to accommodate the lack of flavour tahini provides. 7. Also prepare the parsley-tomato topping by tossing tomato and

parsley with lemon juice and setting aside to marinate. 8. O nce sweet potatoes are fork tender and the chickpeas are golden brown - roughly 25 minutes - remove from oven.

9. F or serving, flip potatoes flesh-side up and smash down the insides a little bit. Then top with chickpeas, sauce and parsley-tomato garnish. Serve immediately.

Red faces for organisers after Colour Fun Run A CHARITY has issued an apology following an event at a Fishponds beauty spot to raise money for people recovering from addiction. Julian House organised the successful Colour Fun Run at Oldbury Court Estate at the end of September with more than 600 people taking part in support of the charity. Part of the fun involved participants being showered with powder paint adding to the colourful spectacle. Due to an unexpected dry spell after the event some of the powder paint which would normally have been washed away was left behind, prompting some dog walkers to complain. But there was confusion over the charity’s name, leading some to take their concerns to the Julian Trust, a completely different charity. Cecil Weir, Julian House fundraising and PR director, said he wanted to apologise to everyone affected, including the Julian Trust, a Bristol-based charity supporting the city’s homeless. He said: “Although the event was very successful it had two unintended consequences a) a significant amount of harmless powder paint was left behind on

paths and grass and b) another completely different charity (the Julian Trust) has received criticism for this. In view of the similarity of names between the organisations it is understandable that local people who use the park, might be confused. “Julian House wishes to make it clear that it alone is responsible for staging the event and for the residue of powder paint which temporarily blighted certain areas of the park. It was an error in our planning to rely on rainfall to wash the paint away – for which we apologise profusely to local residents. Much work has been done since the event to remove all of the remaining paint. Be assured that although the paint is vivid in colour it is a cornflower based product which is completely safe. “Julian House would also like to apologise to the Julian Trust for any criticism which was mistakenly directed towards them. Such criticism should have been laid at the door of Julian House. The Julian Trust supports some of the most marginalised members of society and has done since 1986. The last thing that we would wish to happen is for this fine charity’s work to be tarnished in any way.” Mr Weir added he would like to

thank everyone who supported the event and contributed to its success. The fun run will raise thousands of pounds for St Vincent’s, which is part of Julian House and relies on donations and community support to fund its life saving work. Whilst sponsorship is still

25

coming in, the charity is hoping this will be a big fundraiser in its yearly calendar of events. • If you’d like to take part next year check back to www. thecolourfunrun.co.uk soon for details on the 2016 event.

Book Review from Fishponds Library Marlon James – A Brief History of Seven Killings

EACH year I attempt to read the six nominees for the Man Booker Prize. This hopefully keeps me in contact with some contemporary literature and prior to the winner been announced I had started reading Marlon James novel, ‘A Brief History of Seven Killings.’ I had a feeling it would win and should have placed some money on it. The novel is set in Jamaica and the main focus is the attempted murder of Bob Marley in the 1970s and the political tension that existed in Jamaica at the time. Marlon James list a number of pages of characters and I think this is one of the weaknesses of the novel. You have characters like Bam-Bam a young killer and Josey Wales a major gangster in one of the ghetto areas of Kingston but because the reader has to take in so many characters you do not a real sense of who these people are. They are more like character sketches. Another weakness is the language used. I do not think using the f word on most pages creates realism. It could be seen as a lack of creative imagination. Also using patois does not lead to a greater understanding of some of the characters and also it becomes very repetitive with the same phrases recurring throughout the novel. Another criticism is that the plot is very slow moving and I feel could have been edited a lot more and reduced drastically. The 688 pages in my opinion is too long. Marlon James does bring some aspects of Jamaica to life but Jamaica is more than drugs, gangs and violence and in some ways the novel creates a stereotypical Image of how Jamaica is portrayed in mainstream media. I was disappointed with this novel but don’t let me put you off reading it. Rupert Hopkins (Fishponds Library) • Knit and Natter meets at 2pm on November12, , November 26 and December 10.

Don’t forget to have your flu jab

FREE flu vaccinations are available for thousands of people across Bristol. Everybody is at risk from flu, but some people are especially vulnerable and in danger of severe, and even fatal, illness if they catch the virus. Vaccinations are free for people in “at-risk” groups, which includes those aged 65 and over, pregnant women, anyone with a long term health condition and frontline health and social care workers. The vaccine is also being offered free to young children. This year flu jabs can be given at any pharmacy in Bristol, or by booking an appointment at your local GP surgery. Children aged between two and four years old are eligible for a free nasal spray version of the vaccine from their GP, and children in school Years 1 and 2 can get this nasal spray vaccine from a Boots pharmacy and will receive an information pack from their individual schools. Bristol mayor George Ferguson is encouraging people to have the vaccination. He said: “It only takes a few minutes to get your free flu jab and I’d strongly encourage everyone who’s eligible to do so. Staying in

good health should be a priority for us all.” Last year vaccine coverage amongst over-65s was almost 76 per cent and this year it is hoped this figure will be higher still. The vaccination rate amongst other groups at risk of complications from flu was much lower. The coverage for pregnant women was 41 per cent and for two year olds and three years olds was just 38 per cent. The World Health Organisation recommends that at least 75 per cent of people in these groups should be vaccinated to prevent the virus being able to circulate at a harmful level. Dr Joanna Copping, public health consultant at Bristol City Council, said: “For people who are fit and healthy flu can be a miserable experience, but for those in the at-risk groups it can be extremely serious and even life threatening. The vaccine is given to millions of people each year and it is thoroughly tested to ensure it is safe. “Staying well is about more than being vaccinated against flu and we’re also encouraging people to find out how to keep their homes warm and cosy as the weather gets colder.”

Cardiac Support shop opens

29

SEVEN-year-old Abigail O’Inn cut the ribbon to formally open a new charity shop in Staple Hill. She was the winner of a painting competition at Staple Hill Primary School, which attracted 43 entries. Her prize included a ride in a RollsRoyce and lunch. The shop is run by Bristol Area Cardiac Support, which has raised more than £510,000 for local hospitals in 24 years. This has come from concerts and other events and from its first shop in Lodge Causeway, which opened 20 years ago. Both shops are staffed entirely by volunteers - and co-ordinator Gill Filer would very much like to hear from anyone who’d like to join the team. The charity began as Frenchay Hospital Cardiac Support Group, formed by grateful patients who wanted to give something back to the NHS. It changed its name following Frenchay’s closure. Members have also raised £25,000 for Great Western Air Ambulance.

I

N Parliament last month, I had the pleasure of meeting with Martin Bisp and Jamie Sanigar from a Bristol organisation, Empire Fighting Chance, who were in Westminster to speak at a meeting of the All-Party Group on Mental Health, about the links between sport, physical activity, and

fishpondsvoice

mental health. We met beforehand, so that I could hear about their inspirational work in Bristol. They run a number of programmes in cooperation with the Avon and Wiltshire Mental Health Partnership, which mix boxing with early intervention support for teenagers who have mental health problems. There is other good work on mental health being done in east Bristol. I was delighted that Riverside Unit at Blackberry Hill Hospital was recently accredited as ‘Excellent’ by the Royal College of Psychiatrists. This facility, which looks after mentally ill young people, serves as a great example of how to provide effective treatment, and I look forward to visiting the Unit in the next few weeks. Generally, though, the picture for mental health treatment in this country is deeply worrying. For too long, mental health has been treated as a poor relation to physical health in our NHS. As a result, there is a huge funding gap between the two, despite the fact that a quarter of people will suffer mental ilness at some point in their lives. I have heard first-hand from doctors about the massive imbalance between mental health funding and the number of people who suffer from such illnesses. Dr Dominique Thompson, who heads Bristol University’s Student Health Service, raised this recently

follow us on Twitter @fishpondsvoice

at a speech in Westminster, with particular reference to eating disorders. Far from saving money, neglect of mental health typically only serves to put strain on public services elsewhere. In January, I raised the specific issue of the police being treated as a service of last resort for people with mental health issues in Parliament. Not only does this put extra strain on already overstretched police officers, but it criminalises people who are ill and need help. This is not only a health and financial issue, but one of equality: children in poverty are at a three times greater risk of having a mental health problem, and sufferers from minority communities are more likely to have their conditions go undiagnosed and untreated. I am glad that Labour has taken the step of creating a dedicated post in the Shadow Cabinet for a Shadow Minister for Mental Health. In this Parliament, we will be pushing the Government to do more to ensure parity of esteem between physical and mental health, and to invest fully in early intervention services. If we can match such action with a serious change in our social attitudes to mental health – so that mental illness is no longer stigmatised – then I believe we can vastly improve outlooks for millions of people in this country.

Pope wishes church a happy birthday

ST Augustine of Canterbury church in Downend has been celebrating its golden jubilee in style. The Rt Rev Declan Lang, Bishop of Clifton, led a Mass of Thanksgiving with 20 other priests and Deacons from the area in front of local dignitaries and a packed congregation of parishioners, old and new. Pupils from St Augustine’s Primary School choir, and head teacher Julian Clements, sang songs and hymns before the Mass and children from the local Brownies, Guides, Cubs and Scouts formed a guard of honour. Parishioners who were part of the church in the beginning half a century ago took up an offertory procession alongside the newest generation who have recently made their Confirmation and 1st Holy Communion. Bishop Declan said they were not just celebrating 50 years of the church building being complete, but more than that, it marked 50 years of building a thriving church community. He presented Parish Priest, Fr Frank Bermingham, with a Blessing from Pope Francis to mark the occasion.

Your dream kitchen – get it the smarter way – with the stone that fits over the top

W

HEN a kitchen is old and worn out, it does not have to be ripped it out! Most kitchen units remain sound for decades so it’s usually just your worktops – and maybe doors – that need replacing to make it good as new again. Refurbishing a kitchen is faster than a new fit-out, it involves a lot less waste and allows you to spend your money on those extra touches that make a kitchen a great place to be. When you don’t have an entire kitchen to rip out and replace, you can fit new worktops and doors faster than you would believe – all the time maintaining the highest standards. Gone are the days when a replacement kitchen meant weeks of takeaways! miniQ quartz is a superior engineered stone made of 93% quartz, set in a special resin polymer with coloured pigmentation. Originally developed in Italy, miniQ quartz engineered stone compliments any interior with is strength and beauty, and sheer luxury. miniQ

is the ultimate in sophistication. Developed with design in mind miniQ has both bold and subtle colours to choose from. The stone is contemporary, and a refreshing alternative to granite or marble but with the advantage of colour. miniQ has a clean, crisp hygienic look. miniQ

sparkles with mirror, or is fresh with pale blues, minky browns or soft creams. The colour does not fade, and the material does not scratch. It is fabricated to your bespoke sizes. QUARTZ is versatile and reliable, but within miniQ quartz is strong, hard and a natural

Computer scheme extended until July 2016 A SCHEME to ensure Bristol’s disadvantaged citizens can access low-cost refurbished computers has been extended until July 2016. In partnership with Byteback IT Solutions - a Bristol-based business specialising in affordable computer sales and servicing - the city council has established a computer recycling and reuse scheme. Hundreds of computers are ready to be distributed to people who meet one or more of the following criteria: • Over 65 years of age • Have a disability • Are full time carers • Receive means tested benefits • Have a child at school receiving free school meals • Live on a low income wage Applications can be made for one computer per household, with computers priced at £50 and £75, and laptops at £99. All computers come with a six month warranty. George Ferguson, Mayor of Bristol, said: “I want Bristol to be a truly inclusive and connected digital city where anyone who would like to have a computer at home can have one. “Society is too often divided between the haves and have-nots, the connected and the unconnected. Providing affordable technology is one simple way of breaking down such barriers. Access to a computer allows people to learn valuable ICT skills, search and apply for jobs, complete online courses and keep connected. “I’m delighted that the council is able to play its part in such a worthwhile scheme, which not only benefits poorer people but also the environment, by refurbishing and recycling redundant ICT equipment at zero cost to the tax payer and, crucially, reducing landfill at the same time.” To date, more than 2,000 households have benefited from the scheme, which has also seen 15 computer systems for IT training suites distributed to Eastville Park Methodist Church and to registered charity Borderlands South West Ltd. Applications can be made online at www.bristolcomputerreuse. org or application forms can be downloaded and printed at http://www. bytebackitrepair.co.uk/Computer-Reuse-App-form.pdf and posted to Bristol Computer Reuse, Byteback IT Solutions Ltd, Unit 1 Brewery Court, North Street, Bristol BS3 1JS. Paper application forms should be available at all Bristol libraries. Over the next few weeks all Bristol Libraries will be receiving a stock of paper application forms. People without a computer can also ring Byteback on 0117 3706375 or write a letter to Bristol Computer Reuse, Unit 1, Brewery Court, North St, Bristol, BS3 1JS. Look after your eyes REMEMBER, remember this 5th November, to look after your eyes. Bonfire night is fast approaching, and it’s also getting colder. I turned the heating on for the first time last week, and put a few more protective layers on when going to the park with my son. It’s also the beginning of the season for flu and the so called infamous man cold. A few of the flyers I get through my door warn me to protect my health and get a flu jab. We’re extremely keen on protecting our health, but how keen or aware are we of protecting our eye health? One of the poems about Guy Fawkes says: ‘poke him in the eye, put him on a bonfire’ I’m sure we don’t want anyone to be poked in the eye or have any other eye injury this bonfire night Every year 10 people in the UK lose their sight and 300 people suffer serious eye injuries as a result of accidents caused by fireworks. And, its not just children larking about that are at risk three quarters (73%) of serious eye injuries are sustained by adults and most (45%) occur at private parties (1,2). Rockets take first place in the danger stakes accounting for more than a third (36%) of all serious eye injuries, but also flying high on the dangerous firework list is the innocent sparkler. Although sparklers are often thought to be one of the safest fireworks, they burn at temperatures up to 2000oC hot enough to melt gold! Here are some tips from the Eyecare Trust: Always follow the SPARKLER firework code! Shield your eyes with protective eyewear when lighting fireworks - if you wear glasses consider purchasing tougher polycarbonate lenses.

Plunge sparklers into a bucket of cold water as soon as they have burnt out Attend organised displays wherever possible Read the instructions on the fireworks with a torch and follow them carefully (ensure your fireworks comply with the British Safety Standard (BS 7114) Keep all fireworks in a closed metal box and only light one at a time Leave fireworks that fail to go off – never return to a lit firework Ensure everyone stands a safe distance away when the fireworks are going off Remove all debris and flammable objects from your firework display area. Eye damage caused by fireworks is so often avoidable and can lead to permanently reduced vision or even blindness, so this year the Trust is urging people to take extra care of their eyes and follow the SPARKLER safety code. If anyone in your party does suffer a firework eye injury - Seek medical attention immediately, either from myself or another healthcare professional. Quick action can minimise long-term damage. Do not rub or rinse the injured eye, or apply any ointments to the eye area. If you do, it could increase any damage and make it more difficult for a specialist to provide treatment. At Marian Blake Opticians we will ensure that your eye prescription is correct, up-to-date and that you are using the right kind of eyewear to protect you this bonfire night. Capturing the beauty of nature THESE stunning kingfisher photos were taken at Colston Weir on the River Frome near to Eastville Park by Martin Tayler, a former teacher from Colston’s School. He told us he used a Canon 7D mark II with a 10-400 lens, sometimes with a 1.4 teleconverter. The setting used for the kingfishers was generally 1/500 sec at f/6.3 with a high ISO setting as the light was not particularly good. “I have been taking photos of birds in the Frome Valley all summer. The photos supplied were taken at the beginning of October on two successive days,” he said. Martin has been studying photography with The Open College of Arts for the past three years. His main interest has been in sports photography and reportage; as well as being a modern languages teacher he was master in charge of rugby and cricket at the school. “Since retiring in April of this year I have spent more time on wildlife photography, particularly bird photography. I consider myself very much a beginner in this field compared with many of the enthusiasts I meet in Snuff Mills and Eastville Park,” Martin added.

New club breaking down language barriers A CLUB to help people who don’t speak English as a first language has been set up near Fishponds. The Conversation Club is one of four across the city aimed at helping citizens improve their spoken English. Further clubs can be found at Easton, Lawrence Weston and Brentry, with up to 15 people attending weekly sessions. They are being co-ordinated by Bristol City Council but are run by

volunteers and community groups. The setting up of the clubs follows the withdrawal of Government funding for Esol (English for speakers of other languages) courses in a nationwide drive to save £450million. The funding cuts have been criticised by many people who say it has come at a time when the Government has pledged to encourage integration in communities to tackle extremism.

The club, which is held at Little Hayes Nursery in Frenchay Road on Wednesdays from 1-2pm, has so far been a success but more volunteers are needed to get involved. Councillor Brenda Massey, assistant mayor for people with responsibility for education, said the clubs will help break down language barriers which can cause isolation. “Volunteering of any kind can be a hugely rewarding experience and this is especially true with Conversation Clubs. These clubs are aimed at people who have little or no spoken English who want to develop their language skills. “Language barriers can be extremely isolating and it can be hard to meet new people and learn new skills if you can’t communicate easily, so Conversation Club volunteers have a real chance to change the lives of others. The council has an ambition to see Bristol become a Learning City where everyone can access new opportunities and these clubs are very much a part of that.” Bristol resident Penny Kline is a volunteer at the Brentry Conversation Club. She said: “I wasn’t expecting it, but I have learnt so much by helping others with

their language skills. The group I volunteer at is attended by so many interesting people from different cultures and countries – and they all have different viewpoints to share. I want to improve other people’s experience of living in Bristol and it has been rewarding to see people who’ve been quite socially isolated make new friends through the sessions.” The locations of the Conversation Clubs have been carefully selected so they’re easily accessible to communities who might benefit from the service, including refugees and asylum seekers. Free refreshments such as tea and biscuits are also provided, with some crèche places also available. To encourage more people to come along, posters and leaflets designed to promote the clubs are being distributed across the city. Extra clubs are planned to launch later in the year across the city in St Pauls, St Werburghs, Hartcliffe, Horfield and Lawrence Hill. For more information about volunteering at the Conversation Clubs contact Anna Bowie at the Learning Communities team on anna.bowie@bristol.gov.uk.

With Steve Rimell owner of Coping Covers MY name is Steven Rimell. I have lived and worked in Bristol for the vast majority of my life and am the proud proprietor of Copingcovers.com ltd. We are a small local business based in Warmley, Bristol but our business is expanding throughout the U.K. We have completed projects as far wide as London and Sutherland, Scotland. Copingcovers.com has received so many enquiries countrywide that we regularly supply our Do It Yourself ‘Kits’ to clients for easy self installation or for fitting by your local roofer/ builder. The customer always comes first with Copingcovers.com. Once a project is completed, we don’t expect to return to it other than to start new work. Throughout our 25 years of experience within building, roofing and construction, we have never been called back due to poor workmanship and work very hard to keep it this way. We have spent a great deal of time

over the years discussing damp related issues with many of our clients. We therefore decided to investigate damp related problems more thoroughly and came up with the concept of Copingcovers.com. Most of our new clients have previously accepted different solutions to their damp issues. We are fully aware as to how most of these solutions continue to only mask the damp and not resolve it. We continue to feel saddened that they have not come to us first as our product is a guaranteed solution. My business is my passion. Thousands of houses throughout the country are built with Parapet Walls and all suffer with damp related issues due to the original poor design. If you own a Victorian house with Parapet Walls and suffer with damp, we guarantee that Coping Covers will stop water from entering your walls and will allow them to fully dry out, thus resolving all your damp issues. You will be amazed as to how inexpensive and effective Coping Covers are and just how simple they are to fit. We also undertake all types of building work such as loft conversions and extensions etc. These days, due to the very nature of our business,

we specialise in all aspects of roofing/chimney/parapet wall projects. Our clients become our friends as they have full trust in our honest advice, our approach and the quality of our workmanship. We continue to strive to give the best possible service to all our clients along with excellent value for money. Our aim is to become a nationwide business within the next five years. The vast majority of our

Planning matters THE ongoing McDonald’s furore has put the subject of planning permission well and truly on the Fishponds map. Fishponds Voice’s new columnist Chris Gosling will shed some light on the often confusing subject of town planning. Chris is a member of the Royal Town Planning Institute with over 20 years of local experience in planning in the public and private sector. He is currently a planning consultant. TOWN planners, as a profession, tend to have a bad reputation alongside estate agents, social workers and journalists, to name but three other professions. I believe that this perception is false and I like to set the record straight, although it might take some time. The best place to start is perhaps this question: Why do we need a planning system? Up to 1948 there wasn’t a planning system as we would recognise it now. Planning was part of the post-war aim to make the country a better place to live in and a response to the problems caused by uncoordinated development. It followed hard on the heels of the formation of the Welfare State. It is perhaps not the best point of comparison, but you can compare planning to the drink driving law. That too hasn’t always been in place, but it was brought in to solve a problem – drunk drivers causing accidents. It balances the general need for the roads to be safe for all, with the individual desire to have a swift pint and not have to call a

fishpondsvoice

taxi straight after. Introducing the law took away the freedom of the individual to drive after drinking too much alcohol, but it gave the general public the freedom from drunk drivers. In the same way in the planning system, a balance is struck between the principle of an Englishman’s home being his castle and protection against him digging a moat right up to his neighbour’s garden fence. Where the balance between ‘freedom to’ and ‘freedom from’ lies depends initially on the elected government. Decision-making in planning nearly always lies with democratically-elected politicians, even when they decide to defer the power to make some decisions down to planning officers. As such, when decisions are made by the local council, they are made by the representatives of the general public. At a national level, decisions have been made by the previous coalition government, in response to the credit crunch and subsequent recession, to relax some planning controls in order to get the nation building. It was long established under the General Permitted Development Order, last comprehensively updated in 1995, but under constant review more recently, which development required planning permission and which did not. These limits were set, based on an allowable extent of development which the government considered would not to have an undue effect on neighbours. You could compare that threshold with the government-determined amount of alcohol that you can drink and still safely, legally, drive a car. That is also subject to debate and change. It was not always the case, but for instance within the planning system nowadays, all you have to do to convert certain types of offices to residential use is notify the council, rather than have to apply for planning permission. This deregulation is a significant move away from the level of scrutiny that used to be required: A decision on a planning application would take into account for instance whether the building was next to a noisy

neighbouring use. Now, as the Fleece and Firkin issue in the centre of Bristol has illustrated, with the music venue’s future uncertain due to the conversion of nearby offices to flats. National policy always has local impacts. Changing legislation is one effective way for the government of getting things done, but it does make the planning system confusing to understand to outsiders and ever-changing to those of us dealing with it daily. It must be recognised that nothing stays the same in life, but on the other hand, some aspects of life are worth protecting from change. Planners operate at the cutting edge of these types of issues. In the local context, ultimately it is only because there is a planning system that the public have a say on the controversial proposed McDonald’s drive-through in Fishponds Road. Before 1948, that wouldn’t have been the case. The elected government has determined that in all cases to convert a tile warehouse into a hot food takeaway requires planning permission. That means that a decision has to be taken locally by elected politicians based on the advice given to them by planning officers at the council. The planning officers advise the planning committee on the interpretation of local and national policies and weigh up the critical factors of a proposal. When that

39

Chris Gosling decision, earlier this year, turned out to be refusal of the planning application, the law also proscribes that the decision can be challenged at a higher level. Once again, the public is invited to make their case. If you are interested in this matter or feel that the decision concerns you, then you can choose to get involved in the process. That is why I believe that it is necessary to have a planning system. Decisions that affect us can be influenced to some extent by everyone, either through participation in a highly inclusive process or through the ballot box. Ultimately, which development takes place, whether you personally agree with it or not, is partly our own responsibility in a democratic system. Chrisgoslingplanning@gmail.com

Why reliving glory days is good for you REMINISCENCES of past glories on the cricket pitch have been in the air this autumn to mark the centenary of the death of WG Grace. The amazing exploits of the Downend-born bearded giant are not within living memory but his legacy has remained strong down the decades as local heroes have taken wickets and catches and notched up centuries at the ground that bears his name. So it’s fitting that Downend has been chosen as the latest venue for the launch of a Sporting Memories group, where volunteers can share their recollections of favourite matches. Of course, it’s not restricted to England’s traditional summer sport – there’s the opportunity for endless re-telling of the glories (or otherwise) of Bristol Rovers and City, Bristol Rugby, and local sides too. Sporting Memories Network is a social enterprise that promotes wellbeing through the sharing of sports reminiscences. It supports the formation of groups of older people who get together to talk about sport. Founder director Chris Wilkins said the project had proven benefits for mind and body. The groups are dementia friendly, but are by no

means only for people with memory problems or cognitive issues. Mr Wilkins, who was at the recent Downend Connect event to promote the planned group, aims for it to meet weekly at Downend Library and is hoping it can start in the new year. But if it is to get off the ground it needs volunteers. Obviously, the prime qualification is an interest in

sport, but there are other roles too. Anyone with research skills or just an interest in listening to people’s stories would be welcomed. Sporting Memories already has groups in Yate and Easton and has run successful intergenerational projects in Bristol involving school children. Its next training session is at Gloucestershire County Cricket Club on November 5. To

Nimble students are full of good cheer after clinching title YOUNG cheerleaders have even more of a spring in their step after winning their first major competition. Bristol Metropolitan Academy’s Storm Angels cheerleading squad, who have only been established for one year, headed to the Cheer Festival in Exeter. The squad faced many challenges along the way, including last minute injuries and having to alter their routine late into the penultimate evening. Competing against wellestablished teams, the squad entered with no expectations but hit a clean, sharp cheerleading routine and impressed the judges enough to walk away with the regional title. Sian Angell, teacher of PE and Dance, said: “It was a truly heartwarming moment especially since the head of the UK Cheerleading Association gave the team a special mention at the end of the competition to tell the entire audience how well-mannered and polite the Storm Angels are. “They are a credit to the school and we hope that this success continues.”

with Tim Button, Doctor of Chiropractic at Cleve Chiropractic and Next step in Mangotsfield Blog 22 WHAT a month it has been since we made it home safe and sound from our family holiday in France. Iain our chiropractor and James our sports therapist were both selected to work for the mighty All Blacks to treat the players. They were both excited to meet the team but nothing can prepare you for the awe-inspiring feeling of meeting your heroes and current world champions. In the football world it’s the equivalent of treating Brazil at the World Cup finals. So now, after England rugby’s dismal display and subsequent knock out in the group stages, the Cleve Chiropractic and Next Step sports medical team are fully behind New Zealand in their bid to win back-to-back world cups. I felt sorry for both Wales and Scotland to be knocked out in the quarter finals the way that they were but once the dust settles the team and the countries will feel proud of how they played and are a worrying force to be reckoned with in the Six Nations. As I write this we are waiting for the semi finals and looks like anyone’s tournament. I have recently been treating a number of the UK’s top 10 female tennis players in the clinic for various problems. Tennis players have a number of the usual problems but I had a couple of players with long term shoulder injuries after operations for overuse injuries. They had received excellent physio care already and were very strong but they suffered with nagging pains that stopped them from playing and training. Shoulder problems

like this are always complicated but with three or four treatments including manipulation of the spine, ribs, shoulder joint and some Active Release Technique on the rotator cuff we had the girls back out on the court in no time. One such athlete didn’t take her time and has just got back from a three-week tour of California with the last few days in Vegas. Not a bad life for those youngsters who are contemplating following their idols into a career in tennis. September saw the post summer re-launch of our Posture and Pilates classes. Pilates is an excellent way to develop a strong core and support your spine. Our classes have a maximum of six people in and we provide all the mats and equipment that you will need. Large Pilates classes are of very limited benefit as it’s important that the instructor be able to see that you are all doing it properly. Chris, our Pilates instructor, is highly qualified and is also one of our physios so you are in great hands. Courses are booked in blocks of 6 for only £45. Please ring the clinic to see if we have any space available for you to join. Fayme our sports therapist runs our postural class. This is designed for our patients who we regularly find have injuries caused, or aggravated by, their posture. The course is exercise based, six weeks long and includes all of the tools and equipment you will need for just £50. All is well at home, my wife Jenny, has six weeks left until our due date for baby number two. We didn’t find out the sex at the scan but I’m confident that we will have a boy. It makes sense

that if we had a girl last time that surely I will get my rugby player next? If not, I guess she will just have to learn! We went to the new café in Downend called The Beehive Coffee House and I am pleased to say that it is lovely. The staff are friendly, the coffee is good and the place has just the right atmosphere to make you feel welcome on a blustery autumn day. The young lady who manages the place got to the final in X-Factor a few years ago so we even have our own celebrity to talk to! For those who are wondering, toddler Molly is running past me with about 20 metres of toilet roll trailing behind her and is as happy as a lark.

Rugby girls and boys are aiming high

BRISTOL Rugby players Mitch Eadie and Ellis Genge have helped launch a new sporting initiative at Cabot Learning Federation. The former John Cabot Academy students took time out of their schedules to drop into a recent training session with CLF’s boys and girls elite squads. The visit was part of a new rugby programme partnering CLF with Bristol Rugby Academy, giving both male and female students access to good quality coaches, including Kingswood RFC’s Clare Witcombe.

Further support comes from CLF PE teachers Natasha Summerell (Bristol Brunel Academy), Kat Ogden (John Cabot Academy) and Bristol Rugby and England international Katie Mason (John Cabot Academy). Katie said: “The CLF Rugby programme is a great opportunity for aspiring female rugby players. I didn’t begin playing until I was 16 so it is fantastic that the girls within the CLF academies have access to high quality coaching, strength and conditioning and the opportunity to play with and learn from older

players from the age of eleven.” Gary Townsend, player development manager at Bristol Rugby, said: “We have already received a number of boys into Bristol Rugby developing player programme and are keen to lend our support to developing rugby in the federation. “One of our major aims is to strengthen relationships with schools and clubs and assist in increasing the quality of provision in existing rugby programmes. The commitment, enthusiasm and expertise offered by CLF staff offers

a positive and hugely worthwhile rugby experience to young people which can only be of benefit to rugby in the city at all levels.” Matt Sheppard, CLF rugby coach, said, “The players had a fantastic time working with Mitch and Ellis and gained a lot from the training session. I would like to thank Mitch and Ellis for their time and the further strengthening of the partnership between Bristol Rugby Club and the Cabot Learning Federation.”
