What’s in Store By Mark Miller, m.miller@FitnessDigest.us

Volume 4.2, what can I say? The FitnessDigest.us brand is speaking for itself these days. That is one thing I am grateful of, I never wanted the magazine to be about me. From my first day working for a magazine publisher in Cedar Falls, IA I learned it is not personal. It‘s always been about the content. Content is king. I’ll do my best to give some insight into the most incredible issue to date.

I often take time to think about what the magazine can offer people like Gary Hall Jr. Many times I find that it is about building on their legacy and getting their story in the hands of more people. FitnessDigest.us wants to help amazing athletes with incredible stories leave a lasting legacy. The popularity of hosted-websites has made legacies difficult, in this sense.

“it’s about building the legacy they are creating” First off the blocks. We received a story from the most well known contributor yet. Gary Hall, Jr. is recognized in many households worldwide for his Olympic swimming accomplishments. His story is so much more than swimming – it has many elements. It’s fun, inspiring, heartfelt and it draws attention to a good cause - diabetes research. It is a story diabetics will want to read, but everyone will gain great insight into what inspires the greatest sprintswimmer in history.

I recently read about a government agency that was archiving information on a website and lost funding. No one had thought to make external copies of it. Much of the information was lost. It really illustrates why digital reproductions are so important. FitnessDigest.us is a good vehicle for delivering stories in a way that helps preserve them. We found it important to use standard formats like ISO 32000, better known as PDF. Issues in this format will not go out-of-date when technology is upgraded. Continued on next page.

This issue also features a North Iowa writer, Greg Nicholas. His story takes us on a journey around Clear Lake, Iowa. Pedal on the same roads that are used for the annual Bike, Blues and BBQ event. Sixty-six precent of the magazine’s readers are not from Iowa, so I made sure some scenic photos accompany his story. Continued on next page.

Continued.

A weekend of riding in North Iowa can be a very pleasant experience. You can spend hours biking on hundreds of miles of low traffic roads - paved and gravel. The gravel roads are especially nice for long scenic mountain bike rides, but there is more than riding to do. Within a 20 mile radius we have the historic Surf Ballroom, Music Man Square (Meredith Wilson’s boy hood home) and the last remaining Frank Lloyd Wright hotel. The Park Inn hotel is operational, so you can stay there for a surprisingly reasonable rate. If you appreciate prairie school architecture it is a short walk to the historic Rock Glenn neighborhood. North Iowa is also home to the Diamond Joe Casino. There are many fine restaurants, but I suggest riders stop in at The Hungry Mind for lunch and Chop for dinner. Greg’s story describes some of North Iowa’s features in more detail. Many people handed down short stories to me in the past three months. Take a few minutes to read the short stories, they are the some of the most humorous and antidotal. I’m still laughing about a few. The short 50-100 word stories are unique in how we receive many of them. Often times someone will tell me a

story, then I write it trying to make them entertaining and accurate. The stories we got are so good, it makes writing them easier. In this issue we are introducing two new features. LiveMedia and LiveAdditions. A surprising number of people indicated they wanted more social features along with more multimedia. We think we found a fun solution that balances socialmedia and content-quality. LiveMedia is a way to get a comment published without writing a letter to the editor. LiveAdditions is an online directory of multimedia links that pertain to stories and advertisers. We hope readers can have fun using both of these new products. All-in-all, this is the best issue we have put together so far. Thanks to all the contributors, proofreaders and businesses that are part of Volume 4.2 Spring Summer 2012.

Honor The topic of using competition to honor people who have recently passed away came to my attention. Publishing a story like that is a difficult subject. Below is an excerpt from an email I wrote.

Dear John, It is very sad to hear your friend passed away. It is nice you want to honor him. Obviously there is a story that needs to be told. I've noticed that the athlete and their actions are always a messenger of a bigger story. You wouldn't be going through with the races if it wasn't important to honor your friend. Your friend needs to be remembered in the way you intend. You know how to do that better than anyone. As for my part. It isn't something that should be glorified to increase advertising revenue. If there is a related organization that helps the family we can put that next to the story. I’m also careful about what goes on the cover. The magazine’s readers are the type of readers that would appreciate the story and would have a serious mind while reading it. Do you know what I mean by all that? Thanks for your email, I'm truly sorry to hear about the loss of your friend. Sincerely, Mark Miller

SAYING IT TO MY FACE! Sent from Iowa

YMCA basketball teams can be fun for the kids. It can confusing for everyone. At the first practice everything is new. People are just getting to know each other. The kids can be distracted easily. Frustration can mount.

“He must not be very good”

At our first practice this year a few boys on our team started paling around at the end of practice. The group wondered away and started to play around on the court next door. It took more than a few parents to get back on track. One of the boy’s parents entered the gym just as we were getting them corralled. After our team meeting she walked up to me and said, “I can’t believe the coach was letting those boys play around like that.” She continued, “He must not be a very good coach. I wouldn’t want him to know, but I‘m going to say something to the YMCA director.” I quickly informed her, “I appreciate the honesty, but I am the coach.”

The Most Precious Gift Written by William L. Klahn, Cedar Rapids, IA

“I’m afraid we found cancer, Mr. Klahn. Three tumors located in both lobes of your liver. As we discussed before, your best option is transplant, and now your name will be moved to the top of the list.” I cried for about five minutes. My older brother, Marv, asked the necessary questions since I was unable to speak at that moment. I had been staying with him for the last year and a half and he saved my life with his kindness, and by putting up with me for so long. He asked all of the questions I wanted to ask, like he could read my mind. After all the questions, we left the office. We had a quiet night, both deep in our own thoughts. I went to bed early, and did not sleep well. The next morning I got up, ate breakfast, and went to the gym. I had been a member of the North Dodge Athletic Club in Iowa City for months, lifting weights, swimming, and taking various classes. I was using physical activity to recover from almost total liver failure and had gained back a lot of strength and endurance. I was used to going to the gym everyday. Going to the gym kept me sane by providing me with an outlet for my frustrations. I pounded out the yards, attacking the water as if it were the cancer that was attacking my body. The Most Precious Gift Continued.

I didn’t really know what else to do. In my mind I knew that the best thing I could do was to stay as physically fit as possible, no matter how difficult it was to even walk up a flight of stairs. I found peace of mind in lifting weights, swimming laps and trying to eat right. Sometimes I was ravenous, devouring everything in sight. Sometimes I was so nauseous that I could hardly eat for days, just little bites that I could keep down. Through it all I could still swim from one end of the pool to the other, easier than I could walk. My buoyancy made my movements effortless. Not confined by gravity, I found energy in the water, and I felt as though I were flying. My wait was short, as far as Bill Klahn finishing the 100 breaststroke. Photo by Mark Miller transplants go. The surgeons told my parents after 14 hours of surgery, everything had gone perfectly. I hardly bled and did not even need whole blood. Later my doctors told me that my good conditioning was the primary reason for my success and fast recovery. I give most of the credit to the dedicated staff at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Continued on next page.

The Most Precious Gift Continued.

Now came the hard part. I woke up with almost a dozen tubes going in or coming out of my body and surprisingly, what hurt the most was my back. I think they must have contorted me into some kind of unnatural position during the surgery. I wish I would have added more stretching to my exercise routine to better prepare me for the ordeal.

“your name will be moved to the top of the list.”

One day after waking up, two days after the surgery, the physical therapist came in to my room to help me walk. He gave me a walker and 30 minutes later he took it away from me, saying I didn’t needed it, and on the third day my doctors told me to go home. If you think you are scared before the 200 breaststroke, just think how I felt, leaving the hospital on my third day awake after an organ transplant. As it turned out I was tougher than I thought. Seven days after my transplant I was so bored I went to the baseball game and ate hot dogs and ice cream. My back still hurt, I needed to keep moving around so it wouldn’t hurt so much. Three months later I was in the pool, and in the gym. I had a minor stet back a short time later. It was acute rejection, which can happen time to time. Chronic rejection does happen often, as the medications administered can usually counter the rejection by reducing your immune system, so your body’s defenses do not reject your liver. The Most Precious Gift Continued.

After I recovered, I hit the pool again. Three months later I won a gold medal in the US Transplant Games, which is an Olympic style event featuring athletes who have all had organ transplants. It is sponsored by the National Kidney Foundation. I won the 50 meter breaststroke. I also won silver in the 100 breast and silver in the 50 butterfly. I ran (slowly) in the 5K and was on Team Iowa’s gold metal winning basketball team. All this just 11 months after my transplant. The Transplant Games is an event that is hard to describe. Just imagine 1500 athletes, some with families, donors and donor families, all getting together to celebrate life. With togetherness and love abound, everyone seemed to be in awe of the fact that they had been given a second chance at life. It has now been a little over two years since my transplant. I realize every day how fortunate I am to be alive. I recently competed in the Breadbasket Zone Swimming Championships at Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Continued on next page.

I really didn’t swim as well as I had hoped, but at the meet I met a wonderful woman by the name of JoLeah, whose 25 year old daughter, Sarah, had died and was an organ donor. Sarah’s liver is still alive inside of me. JoLeah and I had been in contact with each other by mail for several months and she came to watch her first Masters Swim meet. There to meet me and see me swim. JoLeah sent me a card the other day, promising to attend more Masters swimming events and she wrote, “Thank you so much for For more information on the Transplant Games visit http://LiveAds.FitnessDigest.us the gift you gave me the day we met. Seeing you, visiting with you, and watching you swim was truly an honor and a blessing.” She thanked me for the gift of simply meeting with her and sharing with her a part of my life. I am saddened that I can’t thank Sarah for the gift she gave me. Sarah gave me the gift of life. There is not a more precious gift to give.

Sharing the Gift of Life What do you tell the people who turn to you for advice? Life—it is the greatest gift of all. And today, it is also a gift that can be shared. Through organ and tissue donation, people have the potential to reach out and do good in this world. They can save the lives of those who would die without help. They can give new hope to their families. They can transform and improve lives, by restoring sight, health, and wholeness. Kelly Olmo Liver Recipient Pleasanton, CA When Kelly Olmo was 2 years old, she became seriously ill and needed a life-saving liver transplant. Kelly’s Japanese-American mother Cathy explains, “It has been 21 years since Kelly received her gift of life through a perfect stranger … a hero in our eyes. This family said ‘yes’ to donation when their own child died. They were able to look beyond their own grief and help someone else.” According to Cathy, “It’s important to sign up to be a donor and discuss your wishes with your family. You never know whose life you might be saving—it might be another child like Kelly!” Kelly’s story is courtesy of California Transplant Donor Network, Oakland, CA

It is one of the greatest opportunities today for those who seek to do good, pass along life, and help their fellow human beings. Choosing to become an organ donor reflects one’s deepest beliefs about the sanctity and importance of life. Some find it an easy decision; others want to be assured they’re doing the right thing by their faith. And so they look to you for counsel.

Members of your community may have already sought your advice as a faith leader for inspiration, y guidance, and even approval in this decision. They may be unsure about how their faith views donation. Others may need your support and W counsel in making the decision to donate the organs of a loved one who did not make a donation designation while alive. Others may enlist your help with spreading the word about sharing the gift of life.

The Need Is Urgent More than 108,000* men, women, and children in the United States are waiting for life-saving transplants. The help they need can come only from individuals who make the commitment to donate. A single organ donor has the potential to save the lives of up to eight people. And through tissue donation, a donor can improve the lives of many more. Donors of all ages and ethnicities are needed—and the need is great. Four Mile Throw Down Sent from Iowa

“Inside I was laughing because it NEVER happens like that”

While warming up for a local four mile fun run last summer I noticed two old high school friends, Todd and Sam. I had not seen either of them for a long time. After greeting them we talked about the race being a fun way to catch up with each other. I’ve been to many races and have seen the competitive and fun attitudes that sometimes show up. Neither Todd or Sam were competitive in high school. I was not expecting them to run hard, but I’m always watching for the killer race attitude. This four mile fun run was no exception. During the first mile, of the four miler, the conversation came up that we would all run together. Inside I was laughing because it NEVER happens like that. Three miles ina-row we reminded ourselves we would just finish together. No one was going to try to beat the other guy. “Ha!” Continued on next page.

4 Mile Throw Down Continued

During the final mile there was one last reminder, "Just finish together!"

I had to smile every time it came up. I know from experience that it was not going to happen. During the final mile there was one last reminder, "Just finish together!" I almost burst into laughter when Todd took a few steps on Sam with Sam quickly responding – both of them leaving me a few yards behind. I guess testosterone got the best of them that day, because THE RACE WAS ON! I now refer to it as Four Mile Throw Down. I had the best seat in the house!!!!! It was seriously a mad dash to the finish line, full-on, full-throttle, whatever you want to call it. Two fun-runners, up on their toes, giving it everything they got – just like a good-old-fashion junior-high foot race. It was thrill of victory and the agony of defeat finding it’s place on the sweet streets of our home town. After the race I congratulated both of them on their performances. Of course I was speaking as a spectator. We all laughed about it afterwards. I'll never forget it...

Entertainment & Inspiration

This spring’s weather has been amazing here in North Iowa. I increased my workouts earlier than normal and notice my times getting slower. About a two weeks ago my son’s after school schedule changed. It allowed us to get his work done sooner and we all got to bed earlier. I saw my times improve with the increase in sleep!

Coach Miller’s Quarterly Challenge Get some rest

By Mark Miller, m.miller@FitnessDigest.us

You don’t need to sleep to get additional rest. Let’s say your routine allows you 60 minutes to workout everyday. That is a great schedule for training, but as you get closer to race day you will want your times to improve. Take the first 30 minutes of your 60 minutes to lay down and close your eyes. Work on deep breathing. Set a timer, you may fall asleep! 30 minute workout: 2 minute run at medium effort, followed by 30 seconds of light skipping and 90 seconds of walking. I have swum in cooler water but never with the air temp that low, it was savage but exhilarating too! To recap, I am training for an English Channel solo swim this August. I am attempting to swim the 21 miles using just breaststroke, which will be only the 10th breaststroke crossing since Mathew Webb in 1875. I am raising money for Parkinson's UK the charity for support of Parkinson's sufferers that provides funds for research too.

Cambridgeshire, UK – Water temperature 1.5C (34.5F) In 2009 I set the fastest time for the BLDSA Champion-of-Champions 9 mile race in breaststroke. I’ve swam 12 miles in 12 hours, on the hour, breaststroke. I’ve also completed two 6-hour breaststroke swims in open last year. Continued on next page.

I am preparing for an English Channel solo swim with the intention of becoming only the 11th and the oldest person to breaststroke across the Channel. The first crossing was made by Capt Matthew Webb in August 1875; he swam from Dover Harbour and 21 hours and 45 minutes later reached Calais. I will be leaving from Shakespeare beach, near Dover and hope that my pilot, Eddie Spelling, will get me to Cap Gris Nez, the closest French soil to Dover. By the end of 2011 a total of 1,245 people had made a total of 1,688 crossings of the English Channel. I am fundraising on behalf of both the Parkinson's UK National research fund and the Parkinson's Huntingdonshire group. Every hour, someone in the UK is told they have Parkinson's. Parkinson's UK is there to ensure that no-one has to face Parkinson's alone. Parkinson's is a progressive neurological condition for which there is currently no cure. Caused by a lack of the chemical 'dopamine' in the brain which helps to transmit the messages that control our movements. The three main symptoms of Parkinson's are tremor, muscle rigidity or stiffness and slowness of movement. On average people develop Parkinson's over the age of 50, but 1 in 20 of those diagnosed are under 40. There are 136,000 people in the Uk with Parkinson's. Continued on next page.

MVP

UN-SPORTSMAN LIKE MVP Written by anonymous contributor

I play on a nine-man football team. After each game the coaches decide on an MVP for the game. Our team had a winning record, largely because of our running back. He is talented and usually consistent. During one of our regular season games he had a bad first-half. During the fourth quarter he had one outstanding play then got ejected for aggressive celebrations while taunting a member of the other team.

His actions drew much interest from the crowd. I could not believe it when, at our team meeting, the coach announced he was the Most VALUABLE Player for the game.

LOCK & KEY Sent from Iowa

My husband and I live near a golf course. Rarely do we lock the golf cart up at the course and walk home. We usually drive it home. My husband and a friend were taking a road trip to a course in a nearby town. Right about the time they were leaving he asked me where his golf bag was. He hurriedly said, “We need the key to the shed, it’s in my golf bag.” and then asked me to grab his golf bag from the den. I informed him his golf bag was in the golf cart not the den. With a deep breath he said, “I’ll just grab it from the garage when we leave.” I reluctantly replied, “The golf cart is in the shed at the golf course.”

The local hardware store had basil seeds on sale for 10¢ last summer. The lady that helped me with my shopping pointed them out to me. She suggested I try planting a few rows. We had never thought to plant herbs before. We took her advice, thinking we have nothing to loss, well 10¢ – if they didn’t grow. I cleared a few feet of garden and dropped the seeds in according to the instructions. It was not hard. The plants grew and before long we were out there with scissors clipping our first crop. WOW! It was nothing like I had imagined. Even fresh basil from the refrigerator aisle doesn’t compare. The herb garden has made a big difference in my cooking too. The food I prepare is fresher and basil lends itself to healthy cooking – think lemons and tomatoes.

Is “Fitspiration” Really Any Better Than “Thinspiration”? Written by Charlotte Hilton Andersen, The Great Fitness Experiment

FITSPO

I’m not against ALL “fitspo” pictures. Like this one. Nothing motivates me more to workout hard than the thought of getting dropped into a gladiator arena with a bunch of teenagers on a reality show. The other day as I sat happily pinning away on Pinterest, a taut, perfectly chiseled six-pack caught my eye. No I wasn’t admiring the latest David Beckham ad for H&M. It was a fabulously fit woman, one whom I would love to look like. But when I clicked to enlarge the picture I saw that the text written across her stomach was not inspirational words but a recipe for purging. The site the picture came from? Ana4Ever. It was thinspo. For those of you uninitiated in the world of eating disorders, “thinspo” (short for thinspiration) are images of very skinny models/actresses/cartoons that one then uses to self-flagellate with the hope that all the shame will make you stop eating and thereby help you lose weight. Because if we’ve learned nothing from The Scarlet Letter it’s that shame is clearly the best motivator to do anything. Continued on next page.

Comment with LiveMedia / LiveAddition links

I’ve managed to mostly put it out of my mind until this past week when a couple of events brought it right back. First, Tumblr, safe haven to thinspo blogs, announced a policy change banning any site that advocates self harming behaviors in general and eating disorder in particular. While I am under no delusions this will shut down the thinspo sites, I am very happy to see an actual policy acknowledging the damage they do. The other issue was that I got an assignment to write about the problems with thinspo and then show examples of healthy “fitspo.”

FITSPO

YOU WANT RESULTS?

THEN TRAIN LIKE IT.

Obviously the first part came easy (maybe a little too easy, by about 200 words too long… oops) but while I thought the second part would be easy, it ended up being a juggernaut that has consumed my whole weekend. Continued on next page.

FITSPO

FitnessDigest.US volume 4 issue 2 spring summer 2012

If I sound jaded, it’s because I am. I had a serious thinspo addiction when I was at the height of my anorexia. After going through a lot of therapy I can finally see the images for the damage they do and now when I look at thinspo I only see sadness. I only feel the self-hatred that permeated my every waking moment then.

Looking at rock-hard body after rockhard body it occurred to me that fitspo may be thinspo in a sports bra. After all, the problem with thinspo is that the images represent a mostly unattainable ideal that requires great sacrifices (both physical and mental) to achieve and I daresay that most of those “perfect” SOME female bodies, albeit muscular instead of bony, are equally as problematic. Many people will say that while it’s rare to be born with skinny genes but that muscle can be built with hard work in the gym. And I agree. But in most of these pictures, we’re not looking at your average woman who does Bodypump twice a week and can now lift her children with ease. We’re looking at a very exclusive set of dedicated athletes that train very hard and eat a very particular diet to maintain extremely lean figures.

FITSPO HIT THE WALL

SOME CRUSH IT

Continued on next page.

FITSPO

FitnessDigest.US volume 4 issue 2 spring summer 2012

The first thing I did was go to Pinterest and start clicking on all my friends’ boards who posted inspirational fitness stuff. But as I got into it I found myself getting more and more obsessive with the images, then comparing myself to them and consequently feeling really awful about myself. Just like I used to do with thinspo.

FITSPO

The last point – one that I would never argue with – is that some women seem to find fitspo genuinely fitspirational. Seeing those pics does make them want to work harder, eat cleaner and live better. I’ll freely admit that I may be more sensitive than most to this type of influence. Which is why I’m now asking you guys (because that’s my strategy – to ask normal people what they would do and then try and blend in!): Do you find “fitspo” to be inspiring or frustrating? Does it matter to you if a beautiful bod comes from elite genes versus elite training?

FITSPO

FitnessDigest.US volume 4 issue 2 spring summer 2012

A second argument would be that super skinny is unhealthy while exercise is very healthy. Again I agree. Except that for the majority of women to look like the girls in these fitspo pictures they’d have to be young, probably not have had kids and quite possibly have an unhealthy devotion to exercise and eating. And let’s remember that women need body fat not only for spawning but also for our own health. I’m not saying every fitness model has an eating disorder. I Don’t Complain About Being FAT promise! I am saying though that If You’re Not Going To Do compulsive over exercise can be Anything About it. just as deadly as other eating disorders and yet it so socially sanctioned that it’s often promoted as inspiring.

COMPETITION LIVES! Sent from Iowa

I have a long standing rivalry with a local competitor in my field of business. Like professionals we treat each other with respect, although I believe he is a little unethical in his business strategies. He is an avid runner. I like running, but rarely race. We are about the same age. When we both show up at a 5k road-race that is popular with locals, the tension mounts. Before the race, I take an opportunity to let him know I'm there. I lower expectations by telling him I'm not expecting to beat him. Later that morning, after the race but before the awards, we meet up and talk again. My impression of him is that he is very arrogant and likes to show when he is in a position of power. There is no surprise when he mentions, "I ran one of my best times – to bad I didn't see you out on the course. Was it a tough day for you?"  I tried to keep a straight face when I said, "You probably didn't see me because I won our age group."

Of Horse & Men Written by Gary Hall Jr. of RaceClub.net For more information & video visit http://LIveAds.FitnessDigest.us

My swim coach at the University of California Berkeley was dating a veterinarian working at the renowned Alamo Pintado Equine Medical Center under one of the most respected veterinarians in the world, Dr. Doug Herthel. Dr. Herthel and his son Mark had recently launched Platinum Performance, a nutritional therapy company. My coach learned of and was impressed with the high level of research that went in to creating the line of advanced nutritional supplements for horses and humans and introduced the nutritional supplements to his elite level swimmers training for the Olympics. That was back at the turn of the century. At that time, I was reeling from a recent diagnosis of type-1, or insulindependent diabetes. Continued on next page.

FitnessDigest.US volume 4 issue 2 spring summer 2012

Of Horse & Men Upon diagnosis it had been explained to me by two doctors that the demands of Olympic level athletics were too strenuous for someone living with this life-threatening autoimmune disorder. I was told quite frankly that my diagnosis meant the end of my swimming career. Having already competed in the 1996 Olympics (winning four medals), and in the midst of training for a second Olympics, I was utterly devastated by the prognosis. Managing diabetes has its challenges, the greatest being the constant tightrope walk of testing and balancing blood sugar levels. Elite level athletes are hypersensitive to changes in health and performance. With type-1 diabetes I am hypersensitive to any food I consume. My life depends on properly balancing food and multiple insulin injections.

When I started taking the Platinum Performance product I noticed two things immediately; the first being that the Platinum nutrition bars did not cause my blood sugar levels to spike like other bars on the market. Secondly, in short time we started to see vast improvements in athletic performance and recovery time (in a sport measured to the hundredth of a second). Continued on next page.

“My life depends on properly balancing food and multiple insulin injections

Of Horse & Men There was absolutely no certainty that I could make the Olympic Games after my diagnosis. Something like that had never been accomplished before. However, these initial results were encouraging. While continuing my training it was brought to my attention that another Platinum Performance client, a horse by the name of Fusaichi Pegasus, was set to compete in the Kentucky Derby in 2000, just a few short months before our Olympic Trials. It is impossible for me to describe the inspiration that I experienced when I watched that horse find an extra gear down the homestretch to win the Kentucky Derby that year. I’m not an emotional man, yet tears ran down my face as I watched that incredible athlete, not without its own obstacles to overcome, break away from the pack in the final stretch for the win. Through Platinum Performance I felt a connection to Fuscaichi Pegasus that transcended species. I suppose that those that own, train or ride horses can relate to that connection. Given the personal circumstances and timing, there isn't a human being that has inspired me more than that horse. Continued on next page.

“a horse by the name of Fusaichi Pegasus

FitnessDigest.US volume 4 issue 2 spring summer 2012

Of Horse & Men I ended up proving those doctors wrong by going on to win six more medals at the Olympic Games after being told that my diagnosis meant the end of my swimming career. I made the Olympic team in 2000. To prove that it wasn’t a fluke I made the team again in 2004. I won the individual 50-meter freestyle gold medal in consecutive Olympics (2000, 2004) with a combined cumulative margin of victory for both races being .01 seconds. This is the race that determines the world’s fastest human being in water.

“Individual 50 meter gold medal in consecutive Olympics (2000, 2004)

It’s always a close race. It’s the attention to detail that makes a champion. It’s the attention to detail that makes one successful in any endeavor, and makes the Herthel family the best at what they do. I am forever appreciative of the instrumental role that Platinum Performance played in my athletic career and my life of managing diabetes. And for introducing me to a horse that changed my life. -Gary Hall, Jr.

Snapshot of Diabetes THE FACTS ABOUT DIABETES: A LEADING CAUSE OF DEATH IN THE U.S. What is diabetes? Diabetes is a group of diseases marked by high levels of blood glucose resulting from defects in insulin production, insulin action, or both. Diabetes can lead to serious complications and premature death, but people with diabetes can take steps to control the disease and lower the risk of complications. How many Americans have diabetes and pre-diabetes?    

25.8 million Americans have diabetes — 8.3 percent of the U.S. population. Of these, 7 million do not know they have the disease. In 2010, about 1.9 million people ages 20 or older were diagnosed with diabetes. The number of people diagnosed with diabetes has risen from 1.5 million in 1958 to 18.8 million in 2010, an increase of epidemic proportions. It is estimated that 79 million adults aged 20 and older have pre-diabetes. Pre-diabetes is a condition where blood glucose levels are higher than normal but not high enough to be called diabetes. Studies have shown that by losing weight and increasing physical activity people can prevent or delay pre-diabetes from progressing to diabetes.

What is the prevalence of diabetes by type?   

Type 1 (previously called insulin-dependent or juvenile-onset) diabetes accounts for approximately 5 percent of all diagnosed cases of diabetes in adults. Type 2 (previously called non-insulin-dependent or adult-onset) diabetes accounts for 90 to 95 percent of all diagnosed cases of diabetes in adults. Type 2 diabetes is increasingly being diagnosed in children and adolescents. Gestational diabetes occurs in 2 to 10 percent of pregnancies. Women who have had gestational diabetes have a 35 to 60 percent chance of developing diabetes, mostly type 2, in the next 10 to 20 years.

What is the prevalence of diabetes by gender?  

13.0 million men have diabetes (11.8 percent of all men ages 20 years and older). 12.6 million women have diabetes (10.8 percent of all women ages 20 years and older).

What is the prevalence of diagnosed and undiagnosed diabetes by age?  

25.6 million Americans ages 20 or older have diabetes —11.3 percent of this age group. 10.9 million Americans ages 65 and older have diabetes —26.9 percent of this age group.

What is the prevalence of diagnosed diabetes in youth? 

215,000 Americans younger than age 20 have diabetes. Most cases of diabetes among children and adolescents are type 1.

A North Iowa Spin By Greg Nicholas, Clear Lake, IA

Historic Surf Ballroom, Clear Lake, IA

“So where do you want to ride tonight?” I asked Pete, my longtime cycling buddy. It had been a long day and we both needed some road therapy. His answer confirmed that he only had a short window of time—“Let’s just go around.” That could only mean one thing: a 14 mile ride around Clear Lake, a combination of city streets, dedicated trails and county roads that lead around the lake that forms the centerpiece of an idyllic north Iowa location. Although I often tell people I meet that I live in the middle of a corn field—a notion confirmed by the 1959 crash of an airplane carrying Buddy Holly, The Big Bopper, and Richie Valens in a field owned by my family after a concert at the Surf Ballroom—that is only partly true since we are blessed with a beautiful body of water on which I regularly sail, kayak, ski, iceboat and skate, depending on the season. Continued on next page.

A North Iowa Spin continued

That night however, the lake was only an obstacle around which we road in an effort to raise our heart rates above the sedentary level and as a bonus we caught a beautiful sunset in the process. I have ridden this same route for over 50 years—literally thousands of times—and I never tire of another trip around.

Clear Lake Wind Farms

I first went around on a homemade Schwinn stingray knock off back in the early ‘60’s and have made the trip on many different bicycles through the years. North Iowa is mostly flat although there is one small hill on the northwest side of the lake that my older brother’s friend calls “Heartbreak Hill—but keep in mind that Swifty (his nickname has nothing to do with the way he rides a bike) is a 62 year old ex-smoker and his bike may be older than he is. The trip can take a leisurely hour with my wife on our tandem—which I bought 10 years ago at her insistence since we had two vastly different ideas of a reasonable pace on our separate bikes. Now we usually arrive back home at roughly the same time although there have been a few exceptions to that rule—use your own imagination. My personal record is 32 minutes and change done 25 years ago in a race where I successfully drafted in a small group and was introduced to the term ”wheel sucker” for the first time.

North Iowa Roads

I still have the ribbon I received for placing second in my age group and display it proudly in my basement storeroom right behind the storm window screens. Now, at age 57, I am satisfied with anything under 40 minutes which isn’t too bad for a 15 year old, 24 pound bike (like it’s the bike’s fault I add a couple of seconds every year). Since perspective is important when you hit your 50’s I often say the remedy isn’t more time in the saddle as much as it is lower expectations. Continued on next page.

A North Iowa Spin continued

I am seriously considering changing my definition of exercise from an uncomfortable activity that I cause to happen intentionally at the Y to something that just happens accidentally when I am doing North Shore, Clear Lake something I enjoy. I have to admit I still get a little frustrated when I get dropped on the local cycling club rides (the group with the young bucks, not the one with the old ladies) on Wednesday evenings in the summer but not enough to shell out five grand for a new Trek. Chances are a few more training rides would do more for my output than that new bike anyway. I have ridden my fair share of miles. In my 20’s and 30’s I had 20, 30, 40, and 50 mile coursed mapped out from home that I road regularly and I have done dozens of centuries, ridden across Poland three times and ridden several 250 mile days but I always come back to my favorite course—around the lake. Pete and I road around the lake 20 times one day some years ago as a fundraiser for his employer, a non-profit residential facility serving folks with physical and mental challenges. I have ridden around in the rain, snow, scorching sun, 40 mph winds and during every month of the year—which is no big deal for those who live in warmer climates—but try maintaining a 95 cadence in February with 5 layers on the top, 2 on the bottom, gloves, a face mask, and a water bottle that freezes before you get to Ventura. That’s the one on the west end of the lake, not the one in California. Not that easy but remember the part about lower expectations. Continued on next page.

FitnessDigest.US volume 4 issue 2 spring summer 2012

A North Iowa Spin continued

It’s not always a breathless sprint around the lake. There are lots of interesting stops if you don’t mind lowering your average speed a bit. Heading west on North Shore Drive from my house I can divert 200 yards into MacIntosh State Woods which has a beach where I can catch either an early morning sunrise or a gorgeous sunset. A few miles after crossing the grade that separates the lake from Ventura Marsh is Farmer’s Beach (I told you this was Iowa) and just past the Girl Scout Camp there is the outdoor Tiki Bar which draws hundreds of thirsty folks most days in the summer. You can usually find my older brother and Swifty there since their definition of exercise is even more relaxed than mine. If you need a quick tune up (unlike the kind the Tiki Bar offers) Russell, a high school classmate who happens to be the world’s best bike mechanic is just ahead at Lakeside Cyclery. Russ is not only inexpensive but will give credit if you forget your wallet--although unfortunately he still has an excellent memory. Turning north on the east side of the lake a charming downtown appears and if I time it right I can sit in the park with my Mom on a Sunday afternoon in the summer and listen to my Dad who still plays trumpet in the municipal band. Clear Lake Beaches

A North Iowa Spin continued

After the concert I jump back on my bike and head west on North Shore passing the Surf Ballroom and both of my brother’s homes (I have failed to mention my younger brother to this point which was intentional. Two years ago he had Russ build him a custom Moots and now he is way faster than me so I pretty much avoid him). Another 2 miles and, bingo, I am home after completing another ride around the lake. In the summer of 2011 the center of the known universe shifted when our oldest daughter, her husband, and our oldest two grandchildren bought the house next door to us and moved to town. Now I get to ride around the lake with one of my grandkids in the Burley behind me although I confess that I enjoy watching Nick in my rearview mirror

as he air pedals in perfect cadence with me more than Grace who yells constantly, “Faster, Grandpa, Faster.” There may be a handful of people who have gone around more times than me but I doubt if anyone has enjoyed it more than I have through the years. If I have my way I will be promoted out of this world pulling a couple of great-grandkids up Heartbreak Hill when I am 85 years old on my last ride around the lake.

Build Strength & Power! for Any Sport!

Kids will respond to a good challenge, give them time. Parents, don’t be surprised when your son or daughter overcomes a challenge you thought was too big or too ambitious. The key to success is giving them enough time. Remind them of the goal and assist them in improving their skills. Each effort you make to help them, brings them closer to success. It is a long road. Few will accept the silent challenge to test one’s skills against another man of equal or greater strength. Ode to Wrestling

FitnessDigest.US volume 4 issue 2 spring summer 2012

ODE TO WRESTLING

Only one in this duel will hang his head high, the other must surrender in both might and main. There are only as many winners as losers – that is clearly on stage. Both wrestlers understand the meaning of this. A defeat is like being thrown down below the earth's crust to be trampled. Winners will know the great value of having victory lift them and guide them to the next battle. Your team, the warriors you've sweated and bled with will watch as you raise your fist or lower your head. The loser, leaving all but physical being, to be devoured by the victor. A tragic event if you lose, a cause for a feast if you win. A winner in such a battle is honored with the privilege of dragging his opponents sole though the dust and mud without remorse. Tarnishing his name, a banishment of sorts, to a place heavy with burden. Where the names of other men he has defeated lie. This victor is then heralded as a champion, gifts rain down upon him. His mightiness compounds and glory is his forever.

A Fainting Timer The summer after H.S. graduation I lost my thumb in a water skiing accident. During my freshman year in college I finished a backstroke race and smashed my hand on the gutter. Teammate, Ron (Stix), swam next to me and asked what happened as I grimaced in pain holidng my hand. After telling “Stix” what happened the lady timer said, “Son are you all right”? Stix quickly pushed my hand into her face and said, “no he knocked his thumb off ” completely shocking her enough to faint and fall forward into the pool. Age Group Taper In the words of the immortal R. Casey the only way to taper age groupers is to tie them to a tree so they don’t get hurt and get some rest. (Just kidding moms!)
