Spring is in the Air Cyprus is simply irresistible in any springtime yet this spring is very special to all in Cyprus. All in Cyrus can stand proud that the nation has weathered the ‘storm’ that descended upon it, and managed it rather admirably. With a lot of soul searching and sheer determination, Cyprus has turned a very important corner of its history and in full confidence positioned itself on the right path for all its citizens. So today and this spring we can be proud of what we have achieved. The tourism industry is ambitiously aiming to attract 2.5 million visitors to the island and is boldly forging into specific, aggressive marketing to develop a special interest tourist product on one hand, and on the other, the CTO is looking to tap into EU development funds to upgrade/renovate local hotels to boost local capacity. The banks have just announced the start of lending again and have lifted all the restrictions on deposit transfers to overseas to one million Euros per person per month. With the average property price at around 300,000 Euros this was not a pressing requirement yet it will go a long way to help liquidity of the top end prestige home sales. Arrival of the Energy Performance Certificater, EPC, in Cyprus is a long waited milestone and It should go a long way to demystify the energy performance characteristics of many a property in Cyprus. The law was passed in 2010, yet only now have the authorities realized that it is time for the EPC to be done. Whilst the energy certification is an important issue to the owner, buyer or tenant, it is also an issue that is very important to all agents. The lack of the EPC is the missing link to market property. Paphos , for example, has the most properties for sale in Cyprus and only 27 certified local ‘professionals’ valuers/assessors to do the job. But, the spring is in the air, the outlook is much brighter, and the prospects are excellent. With our quality property at realistic prices and Title Deeds; all we need now are EPC certificates. Have a happy Easter.
Cyprus reclaiming traditional markets in 2015 Tourism arrivals were up 7.7 per cent in January and February this year compared to the same period last year, according to CTO chairman Angelos Loizou. In the first two months of the year, tourist arrivals totaled 92,508 compared with 85,903 in the same period of 2014. Loizou told the Cyprus News Agency that arrivals were due to increase from the UK, Germany, France, Holland, Belgium and the Scandinavian countries. There was also increased interest from France as a lot of French tourists were avoiding traditional destinations such as Egypt and Morocco “and they see Cyprus as a safe destination”. Cyprus was also working to increase arrivals from Israel and the Arab countries, the CTO boss said, and the signs were encouraging. In terms of numbers, Loizou said arrivals from the UK had increased 7.2 per cent in February this year and by 20 per cent from Greece while the Russian decline was evident last month with a 10.4 per cent decrease. CYPRUS has been listed as one of the top five value destinations for Britons this Easter, according to a new survey by the UK Post Office. In the Post Office survey, the island came in third behind the Algarve and the Costa del Sol, and was trailed by Tenerife and Orlando in Florida on the cost of a basket of holiday items with comparative prices for the same time last year. Earlier this week, the Cyprus Tourism Organisation indicated that numbers were up from traditional markets such as the UK, Germany and Scandinavian countries as arrivals from Russia were on the decline.
February property sales 5% up boosted by weaker euro The number of property transactions rose 5 per cent in February to 325 compared to the respective month of 2014, A real estate expert said the increase may be related to the weak euro visàvis the British pound which makes purchases in Cyprus, mainly in coastal areas, more attractive. Cyprus Mail, March 2015
Finance ministry raises money transfer cap to €1m The finance ministry said it further relaxed capital controls introduced following the March 2013 banking crisis. The cap for money transfers abroad was raised to €1m from €50,000 per person per credit institution, the finance ministry said in an emailed statement today. “The order will remain in place for 21 days”. Central Bank governor Chrystalla Georghadji said March 5, that all capital restrictions will be lifted by the end of the first quarter of the year. Cyprus Mail, March 2015
EU convinced over halloumi’s traditional Cypriot character, Minister says The process of designating halloumi cheese as a Cypriot traditional product is at an advanced level, Minister of Agriculture Nicos Kouyialis has stated on Wednesday. The Cypriot government has filed an application to the EU for designating halloumi as a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) and according to the Minister, the relevant file is now at the stage of translation, after it has passed all checks by the competent European Commission Directorate General. In the next few days, the application file will be published in the Official Journal of the EU, Kouyialis went on to say. He added that this signifies that the EU is convinced that halloumi is a Cypriot traditional product, opening thus the way for assigning it PDO status. The designation of halloumi will open new horizons, benefiting the wider economy, Kouyialis concluded.
