Sales Boom in Paphos Prices have come down massively to really low levels this month and it seems that more people are recognising these golden opportunities. One classic example is Peyia Prestige Paradise Villa, which has just been reduced from €1.38 million to only €980,000 last Friday. http://www.fitzgeraldprestige.com/properties/1507peyiaparadise/ Not surprisingly it’s attracting offers from all over the world and will soon be snapped up by some enterprising buyer. And who are the biggest buyers? Not the Russians, not the Chinese … but the British! Irreverently called ‘Whingeing Poms’ by the Australians, the Brits have bad press over the years for their pessimistic mindset, but right now they’re the biggest buyers and definitely not the biggest whingers. Perhaps spurred on by their latest sporting successes and the improved economic outlook of Britain, there are many more British cash buyers than ever before. Smart buyers from all over the world, including Cypriots, are coming to Paphos in droves to buy our quality property even in the heights of this hot summer; we believe it’s the Fitzgerald’s credo of quality at realistic prices with Title Deeds that brings them here.

PISC does Paphos proud Since becoming a sponsor of the Ladies’ race in the recent Paphos International Sailing Club (PISC) Regatta this year, Fitzgerald’s has become a little more involved in the island’s sailing scene. We felt a flicker of pride to hear our Paphos sailors had been asked to train and send teams to assist at the first ISAF World Youth Championships in Limassol from 11th to 19th July. This was a massive event of worldwide importance as well over 300 young sailors (aged up to 17) from 61 countries assembled at the eastern end of the town to race several different international class dinghies.

PISC Commodore Chas Kimber reported back: ‘The craft selected for the youngsters were different from those we sail at the Club and included 420 dinghies, SL16 Catamarans for open/mixed crews, some RSX windsurfers open to both boys and girls and finally the 29er which is made in North Shields, Tyne & Wear. These were a delight to see with colourful gennakers; we were all thrilled with the spectacle and we had good wind/weather all week.’ That’s not to say it was all ‘plain sailing’ to get to that stage! First the registration team, headed by PISC Hon Sec Jaqui Biggs, was tasked with pulling together the competitors’ photographs to produce

were needed! Safety Sinka performed faultlessly and was lead "Rescue" boat for Area Alfa racing (Lasers and 29ers).’ For pictures, competitors and winners, do check out www.isafyouthworlds.com Apart from the obvious pride and pleasure in providing two different and very important functions for the international youngsters, a different highlight for Chas was the opening ceremony and team flag parade in the old town. He related: ‘It was lovely and initimate; all teams brought water from their home countries to mix in a large pithari which was then emptied into the sea. The whole thing was very relaxed with singing and laughter; it all had a great atmosphere. We at PISC were very proud to represent Paphos at this world class event.’ passes for each team … even those that turned up without photos. Chas emphasised: ‘What could have been an amazing mess was resolved by approximately 7.30pm on the first day! Day 2 had only two small teams left to register!’ Kimber was also part of the safety crews which accompanied the PISC rescue boat ‘Safety Sinka’ throughout the racing day, sometimes not finishing till after dark. PISC RIB teams were impressive in both turnout and skills he confirmed: ‘Every member was grateful for the extensive winter training we undertook this year as all our RIB driving skills

PAFOS APHRODITE FESTIVAL 2013: Presents G. Donizetti's “L’Elisir D’Amore” in a coproduction with Opera Futura Verona and the participation of the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra on 6, 7, 8 September at the Pafos Medieval Castle With the popular, romantic, comic opera L’Elisir d’Amore (The Elixir of Love) by Italian composer Gaetano Donizetti Pafos Aphrodite Festival 2013 opens its curtain. L’Elisir d’Amore constitutes one of the most charming and melodic operas of the international repertoire but also one of the old time favourites of opera lovers worldwide. The choice of this work of opera brings innovation to the Festival since a comic opera will be presented instead of lyric drama. Donizetti’s comic masterpiece L’Elisir d’Amore will be presented in a coproduction between the Company Pafos Aphrodite Festival Cyprus and the lyric organization Opera Futura Verona with the participation of the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra. The opera consists of two acts and the Italian libretto was written by Felice Romani based on Eugène Scribe’s Le Philtre (1831). It premiered at Teatro della Canobbiana, in Milan on 12 May 1832.

This opera has established Donizetti as composer of comic opera since he managed to introduce the emotional element into this genre of opera. In this work of opera Donizetti created a pleasant atmosphere where the dominant features are bright colours and pure emotions which to this day allows audiences to leave with a smile since comic elements are followed by emotional scenes. For additional information please contact the offices of Pafos Aphrodite Festival Cyprus in Pafos at 26822218 or visit the company’s website www.pafc.com.cy. Ticket prices are as following: €35, €50, €60 and €80.

Water Divination in Peyia When buying a large plot and planning a thriving garden the first concern would be water supply. Although we are lucky enough to have ample water in our dams this year, it is also true that some years are decidedly dry. To a keen gardener, a ready water supply is imperative and many go to extreme lengths to drill bore holes looking for water locked away in underground pools in the porous Cyprus limestone. Each municipality manages the underground water diligently. Procedures are complex and permits are also required. Back in 1998, Jessops built a luxurious home situated on a spectacular hillside plot of 3230 sq mtrs which boasts wonderful views over Peyia to the Mediterranean. This property features a beautiful five bedroom villa, with maid’s quarters, a luscious garden, a swimming pool and a fullsized tennis court: visit http://www.fitzgeraldcyprus.com/properties/1507 to see what we mean. The only thing that was missing was the necessary abundance of water to keep the lush gardens at their colourful, luxuriant best. The answer? A bore hole, if you are lucky enough to a) find water on your plot, and b) obtain the necessary licensed to operate a bore hole. There are many pros and cons of sinking a bore hole but it is not an easy undertaking when your ‘bright idea’ come after the tennis court, the villa, garden and terraces have all been completed!

However, don’t despair. The beauty of living in a traditional village is the abundance of ‘local area expertise’ whether you want to know how to pickle local capers, start a vineyard, keep mosquitoes away or find out if you have a healthy flow of subterranean water! After mentioning something of the idea in the village, soon a mild mannered chap turns up with an empty plastic water bottle! Needless to say something more like a willow branch or at least a metal coat hanger was the very least that was expected! However, rules of hospitality had to be observed, albeit begrudgingly under the circumstances! Anyway, formalities over and following an aperitif or two, the chap gently perched the water bottle on the open palm of his hand and carefully and meticulously crisscrossed the hilly terrain of the plot. Of course, and as you would expect, the bottle took a tumble every now and them but this was expected you may say. Imagine the surprise when the chap comes informs you that the spots where the bottle tumbled indicated the presence of underground water! You are literally floating on water, he says and proceeds to tell you where to drill and gives you an idea how deep the well needs to be. Needles to say, all of this turned out to be true! Luckily, with the help of this super talented Cypriot, the family now has a constant – nonpotable water supply, an increasingly lovely garden, a new friend and has a Cypriot tale to tell. Welcome to Cyprus!

"The Office" Being a family business we have one office centrally situated in Paphos close to and in walking distance of both the Paphos Harbour and the Tomb of the kings Road. From the harbour walk up towards the Begonia Garden centre at the traffic lights and we are on the left just before the “Wishing Tree”. Coming from the Tomb of the kings turn right at the traffic lights (or cut through by the Roman Hotel) and we are a short way down on the right just after the “Wishing Tree”. Office hours are 9am

to 5.30pm 6 days a week with no break for lunch.

So if you are working and only have your lunch break to come and see us, you are welcome!
