Paphos is Growing Again The latest government statistics of all home sales show marked improvements across the island. In Limassol, where traditionally the property prices are much higher than in Paphos, a total of 130 property sales were registered in October. Paphos come second, with 90 sales. To break down the October figures still further, Paphos District registered 50 sales (55% of sales) to overseas buyers whilst Limassol only managed 27, or 21%. Fitzgerald’s had 7 buyers in October and 9 in November with 7 villa sales for the two months. The heightened interest in Paphos properties by the overseas investors is particularly positive. There is now a major shift in property preferences with villas as the main buyer focus, when only a few months ago, most properties sold were apartments. The greater willingness to make a more substantial property investmernt in Paphos carries with it, we believe, a broader market sentiment that Cyprus is performing admirably well given the national circumstances. The Cyprus is about to reach another historic milestone in creating a centralised databankof all property transactions. The Cyprus Economic Intelligence (the CEI) has been in development for the past three years and it promises to deliver information of all transactions by municipality, price bands, property types, produce thermal maps, etc. The new database promises total transparency in the Cyprus property market. It will also go a long way to eliminate market distortions of the past, and at Fitzgerald's this event has been eagerly awaited. New German flights for Paphos (CyprusMail) By Bejay Browne
SEVEN NEW flights a week operated by airline Germania will connect Paphos with five German airports from next year. The Paphos regional board of tourism confirmed that the flights would commence in March 2015. A spokesman noted that the development was an important move for Paphos and had come about through the cooperation and efforts of the tourism board, the Cyprus Tourism Organisation (CTO), airport operator Hermes, and airline Germania. He added that the airline currently has a fleet of 23 aircraft and flies to 150 destinations. The new flight schedule which will connect Paphos International airport with Germany is expected to begin in March 2015 and includes seven flights a week from five airports, Dusseldorf, Berlin, Hamburg, Bremen and Erfurt. He said: “We welcome this development which is very important and very promising since it greatly enhances the accessibility of Cyprus and Germany. It also contributes to the efforts to extend the tourist season, penetrates into a key market and aids the development of special interest tourism.� The spokesman noted that relevant promotions, public relations initiatives, advertising and other campaigns in Cyprus and abroad, are a coordinated effort with the airline to ensure success of the venture and possible expansion in the future.
Dozens of items uncovered at Paphos Agora site (CyprusMail) Pottery of different categories, terracotta figurines, coins and metal objects, were found in a well excavated during the Paphos Agora Project, as part of archaeological investigations into what was once the ancient city of Nea Paphos, the capital of Cyprus in the Hellenistic and Roman periods. According to the department of antiquities, during the fourth season the aim was not only to excavate and provisionally study the uncovered material, but also to conduct preservation work and to implement new, non足invasive research techniques already partly tested during the 2013 season. The non足invasive research was conducted by specialists from the AGH University of Science and Technology in Krakow, Poland with the laser scanning of trenches, and the J. Kochanowski University in Kielce, Poland with georadar prospection. The excavated well was filled足in with rich movable material and earth. Pottery of different categories, such as fine wares, plain wares, cooking ware and transport amphorae, some of which bore stamps, were found. The team also found terracotta figurines, coins and metal objects. Amongst the metal objects were three sling bullets, two of which were decorated with a relief depicting scorpions and the third with a representation of thunderbolt.
