2014 is starting positively on many fronts Fitzgerald's has finished 2013 with five more sales achieved in December and the company has just completed four sales in January with another waiting in the wings for completion before the end of the month. Bank of Cyprus has just announced today (Cyprus Mail 30th January) they are releasing close to €900million that were held in fixedterm deposits, blocked following the lender's recapitalisation last year’. The determining factors were ‘the significant improvement of the bank’s liquidity that has been observed in recent months and the signs of stabilisation displayed by the deposit base,’ according to BOC Chairman, Mr Hassapis”. The biggest borrowers, apparently some 30 of them of which 22 of them are ‘leading’ property developers, have notched up in excess of €6 billion in non performing loans. The Bank of Cyprus is poised to demand loan repayments and the President of Cyprus, Mr Anastasiades, has offered his full support to the Bank of Cyprus CEO, John Hourican, saying that those who owe the financial institution money have no option but to pay. (Cyprus Property news http://www.news.cyprus propertybuyers.com/2014/01/14/payshut/id=0016647 ). The Cyprus property market has lost some more ground but also more buyers are eager to take advantage of the discounts. Constantly analysing the market and trends, level of enquiries etc. Fitzgerald’s sees the prices as ‘healthy’. Some offerings are low but this is an opportunistic trend to test the market; for the properties that are of high quality and deliver that ‘extra’, the prices are remaining stable. Fitzgerald's sell many properties and, according to our research and our experience this last year, the average selling time has also been reduced. This month we had a new listing that was sold two days after launching it on our website! Sellers are happy because not only does our company have the marketing ability to promote each property in their portfolio but also, as a direct result, Fitzgerald’s has been attracting more buyers in the last six months more than ever before. Sellers have been achieving, good realistic prices and the buyers love the quality together with the security of the title deeds. However, from a sales point of view and in today's market, even the standard of furniture is of vital importance and has become a major factor in attracting the buyer. It is important to note that more people are securing their title deeds at this time and the Cyprus government has been making an issue of how many buyers over the last decade are still awaiting their deeds and how much money is tied up in this.

Releasing the deeds will ensure that equity comes back into the economy. Hi Daryl This was our first experience of buying a property in Cyprus and though we have visited a number of agents, none have been as professional as Fitzgerald’s. From first contacting Bella back in September 2013 to arranging to pick up the keys from Daryl next month, they have been there when we have needed them. Overall a 1st rate service from a 1st rate company and I can say with confidence; if and when we decide to move on to bigger and better Fitzgerald’s are the company I would use to market our property. Thank you everyone at Fitzgerald’s

Carnival One of the brightest annual events in Cyprus is definitely the Carnival. Carnival begins 10 days before the Lent, or 50 days before Orthodox Easter, on the Thursday of Kreatini (Meat Week, as it is the last week for eating meat before the Lent). Festivities start with the Carnival King entering the city, decorated for the occasion. On Sunday the youngest participate in the Children’s Parade and then the Serenaders’ shows become the focus of the event. During the 10day Carnival period many hotels and clubs organize fancydress parties. The Sunday of the second week of the festivities known as Tyrini (Cheese Week, when cheese and other dairy products may be consumed) is the climax of the Carnival. This is when the Grand Carnival Parade takes place.

So, What is Carnival? It is an annual celebration of life found in many countries of the world. And in fact, by learning more about carnival we can learn more about ourselves and a lot about accepting and understanding other cultures.

Where did the word “carnival” come from? Hundred and hundreds of years ago, the followers of the Catholic religion in Italy started the tradition of holding a wild costume festival right before the first day of Lent. Because Catholics are not supposed to eat meat during Lent, they called their festival, carnevale — which means “to put away the meat.” As time passed, carnivals in Italy became quite famous; and in fact the practice spread to France, Spain, and all the Catholic countries in Europe. Then as the

French, Spanish, and Portuguese began to take control of the Americas and other parts of the world, they brought with them their tradition of celebrating carnival.

African influences on carnival traditions Festival arts are the ancient African traditions of parading and moving in circles through villages in costumes and masks. Circling villages was believed to bring good fortune, to heal problems, and chill out angry relatives who had died and passed into the next world. Feathers were frequently used by Africans in their motherland on masks and headdresses as a symbol of our ability as humans to rise above problems, pains, heartbreaks, illness — to travel to another world to be reborn and to grow spiritually. Today, we see feathers used in many, many forms in creating carnival costumes. Carnival arts offers all of us a dynamic tool for self expression and exploration, a tool to seek out our roots, a tool to develop new forms of looking at the world and its cultures, and finally, a tool to unite the world, to discover what we all have in common, and to celebrate what makes us different. The power and creativity that underlies these art forms can transform lives.
