The New Year begins in a buoyant mood January tends to be commercially quiet in Cyprus in the aftermath of Christmas; the Cypriots start their festivities early on December 6th, St Nicholas Day – and continue for a month until the Feast of Epiphany on January 6th. It’s traditionally a solemn, religious holiday period; beautiful carols called “kalanda” have been handed down from Byzantine times and add to the reverent quality of the celebration. After Midnight Mass, families gather together to share a meal, marking the end of the Christmas fasting period. While other cultures have Christmas elves, the Cypriot equivalent is not so benign. According to myth, mischievous and sometimes even dangerous sprites called “Kalikantzari” prey upon people, but only during the 12 days of Christmas, from Christmas Eve to Epiphany Day, on January, 6th. In the olden days, the children used to get their presents on New Year's Day and not on Christmas Day, as their “Santa” is Ayios Vasilis, whom they celebrate on January 1st. Ayios Vasilis is every Cypriot child’s favourite saint as he ALWAYS arrives with presents. Days later, the older generation used to “ploumizoun” (give money) to their grandchildren on the morning of Epiphany Day, on 6th January. The children, would go early in the morning to their grandparents, chanting the following verse: “Kalimera ke ta phota ke tin ploumistira prota” (Good morning on this day of light and let us have our gift first). Needless to say, the grandparents were delighted to see them and handed over their festive pocket money. This year Epiphany – a public holiday falls on a Monday, so it may be as late as the following week before businesses get fully back in gear and the month starts to gain momentum with the number of listings coming on the market. Now is the time

to expect house prices to be competitive as owners of properties that have been on the market throughout the winter are settling their plans for 2014 and wanting to release their equity. And then, before you know it, Chinese New Year will be upon us at the end of the month! The regulations governing Chinese buyers in Cyprus are changing by the month, but we expect to welcome some buyers from the east ‘Gong Xi Fa Cai!’ after their important holiday. Property continues to consolidate at low openmarket values. Pricing is more confident though as more keen buyers enter the market and, if the Halifax Housing Survey in UK is to be believed, the British property market shows no sign of slowing down. There’s no doubt that the British are still the largest group of prospective buyers and that our climate is one of the reasons they consider Cyprus. At Fitzgeralds we are looking forward to a bright and busy 2014 concentrating, as we always do, on 'Quality Property at Realistic Prices with Title Deeds'. After the financial mayhem of 2013, we hope that 2014 will improve because the banking situation appears to be stabilised, buyers from overseas (particularly Britain) are doing better and want to buy in Cyprus. And we guarantee we’ll have some excellent properties to choose from! From another perspective the prospects of the Cyprus Gas Fields now being explored by America’s Noble Oil, are enormous. This development will bring a different type of buyer to the marketplace and there will be a scramble for excellent properties of all types and prices. To this end, Fitzgeralds are starting to take on properties in the Limassol area, to add to those we already have in Pissouri and Prastio, east of Paphos. This element of our business will be managed by Lisa Sofocleous who operates for us out of Pissouri The Fitzgerald offices will be closed on January 1st and January 6th 2014 With the exception of the Christmas holiday period, www.fitzgeraldcyprus.com achieves results all year round. So if you have a quality property with Title Deeds and you are happy to sell at the open market value, the site to advertise is www.fitzgeraldcyprus.com

What traditions to expect in Cyprus this January 01 January, New Year. Welcome to the New Year: 'Protochronia'. As the clock strikes midnight, the arrival of the New Year is marked with fireworks filling the night sky. As well as celebrating the arrival of a new year, traditionally it is Ayios Vasilis (Saint Basil) who brings everyone’s gifts when he arrives on the night of New Year’s Eve in time for his Name Day on 1 January. Soon after midnight, families gather together to share their Vasilopitta: ‘Basil’s Pie’, is a delicious sponge cake flavoured with local oranges and brandy, with the New Year written in almonds on the top. There’s great ceremony as the head of the family 'crosses' the cake to bless it and then cuts into it, putting the first two slices aside to be given to the church and Christ and the poor. He then serves himself the third slice, his wife the next and all the family and friends are given their slice served in descending age order. One person will find a silver or sometimes gold coin hidden in their slice and this ensures good luck for the whole year ahead. 06 January, Epiphany: The 12th day of Christmas. The festival of Epiphany is known in Cyprus as ‘Ta Fota’ which means ‘the light’. It’s is a big festival that celebrates the baptism of Christ and revelry takes place at all the harbours.

In Paphos, the Bishop leads a procession of school children and members of youth organisations along to the harbour accompanied by the local band. During this service, the Bishop dramatically tosses his processional cross into the sea to bless the waters and scores of local lads dive in quickly to retrieve it: he who does is ensured of good luck for the year. Everyone spends time around the harbour area and everyone wanders around dressed in their best clothes and enjoying lokoumades tiny honey soaked doughnuts – often bought from specialist roadside stalls. Away from the bustle of the festivities, some of our older Cypriots may quietly wash their fruit and vegetables in the blessed seawater to ensure that they have a bountiful harvest in the autumn.

"The Office" Being a family business we have one office centrally situated in Paphos close to and in walking distance of both the Paphos Harbour and the Tomb of the kings Road. From the harbour walk up towards the Begonia Garden centre at the traffic lights and we are on the left just before the “Wishing Tree”. Coming from the Tomb of the kings turn right at the traffic lights (or cut through by the Roman Hotel) and we are a short way down on the right just after the “Wishing Tree”. Office hours are 9am to 5.30pm 6 days a week with no break for lunch. So if you are working and only have your lunch break to come and see us, you are welcome!

Years of the Horse 02/11/191801/31/1919 01/30/193002/16/1931 02/15/194202/04/1943 02/03/195401/23/1955 01/21/196602/08/1967 02/07/197801/27/1979 01/27/199002/14/1991 02/12/200201/31/2003 01/31/201402/18/2015 02/17/202602/05/2027 02/04/203801/23/2039 01/23/205002/10/2051 The spirit of the horse is recognized to be the Chinese people's ethos – making unremitting efforts to improve themselves. It is energetic, bright, warmhearted, intelligent and able. Ancient people liked to designate an able person as 'Qianli Ma', a horse that covers a thousand li a day (one li equals 500 meters). Strengths People born in the year of the horse have ingenious communicating techniques and in their community they always want to be in the limelight. They are clever, kind to others, and like to join in a venture career. Although they sometimes talk too much, they are cheerful, perceptive, talented, earthy but stubborn. They like entertainment and large crowds. They are popular among friends, active at work and refuse to be reconciled to failure, although their endeavor cannot last indefinitely. Weaknesses They cannot bear too much constraint. However their interest may be only superficial and lacking real substance. They are usually impatient and hot blooded about everything other than their daily work. They are independent and rarely listen to advice. Failure may result in pessimism. They usually have strong endurance but with bad temper. Flamboyant by nature, they are wasteful since they are not good with matters of finance due to a lack of budgetary efficiency. Some of those who are born in the horse like to move in glamorous circles while pursuing high profile careers. They tend to interfere in many things and frequently fail to finish projects of their own.
