Onwards and Upwards The latest instalment of the bailout has been approved for release amid positive signs that Cyprus has been achieving restructuring objectives and, in some areas, these objectives have been realized ahead of schedule, according to the Troika’s inspectors. Much is still needed to be achieved though. Pruning of the bloated public service and the privatisation of the semigovernment organisations such as the electricity, port authorities, and the telecom giant CYTA is still in limbo, however many objections from the unions against privatisation have been rigorously deflected by the government who are adamant that the privatisations are strictly on the agenda. The World Bank will be presenting a report to the Cyprus Finance Ministry outlining guidelines and recommendations on the restructuring of the public service In Cyprus, giving the government extra support to commit to privatisation. The matter of the bank’s ability to reinin ballooning nonperforming loans (NPLs) is also a hot topic. Dr Mountis, professor and the director of business development at Emergo Wealth, Nicosia states "Thankfully, Cypriot bankers are well aware of the challenges and have lost no time in turning to experts who have the experience and technical knowhow to help build a comprehensive system for dealing with NPLs". (Cyprus Mail, Feb.23) As a highly respected and notable authority on banking and finance, Dr Mountis sees the present national woes as catalyst for change, calling for fundamental change in business ethics and corporate mentality in Cyprus. According to the European Commission’s winter forecast, Cyprus’ economic recovery will steadily improve and will level out by winter 2014. The report indicates that Cyprus will show the improvements in line with the continued recovery in most
member states and the EU as a whole. In an effort to boost winter tourism Finance Minister, Harris Georgiades, spoke of the continuing resilience of our tourist industry and pledged additional tax incentives to hoteliers to expand the winter tourism segment. The government is also considering possible reduction in airport landing charges in an effort to increase tourist arrivals from 2.4 million to 3.5 million over the next 5 years. In summer 2013 tourist arrivals increased 6.7%. There was an increase in arrivals from Russia but their numbers are far below British travellers. The winter tourism is less buoyant and overall arrivals fell by 3.8% year –on – year in January 2014. There is also a healthy interest in Cyprus properties. In January 2014 we had 61 viewings and February was also busy with inquiries and viewings.
