We continue to advertise our world class website on the famous British property website ‘Rightmove’, the Cyprus Mail, Essential Paphos magazine and the Russian magazine ‘My Island’ (Moi Ostrov) attracting sellers as well as buyers.
We are seeing consolidation of prices at current realistic levels. As more people wake up to the fact that this is a wonderful opportunity to buy villas, prices will increase however prices for apartments will continue to be soft because there is a big oversupply of these types of properties.
Price Stability at Fitzgeralds
Fitzgeralds have concentrated on offering quality property at realistic prices for many years. The issue/presence of Title Deeds is of particular importance and we go ‘that extra mile’ to support sellers in seeking the Title Deeds. This service extends to buyers also, as clear Title Deeds to their 'new' property are of paramount importance to everyone, local or foreign, buying property in Cyprus. Daryl Fitzgerald This enhanced information policy has been very successful during these trying times. Buyers from Brazil to Japan, and everywhere between, have appreciated the ‘added value’ of secured property ownership and quiet enjoyment of their homes facilitated by Fitzgeralds.
Buyers are asking pertinent questions and demand a level of security that has been largely ‘veiled’ hereto. The spread of freedom of information via the internet is a major contributor to buyers being particularly informed about the problems that many other buyers are facing with property ownership. The issue is no longer the province of the legal profession or sales people.
For Fitzgeralds the information ‘openness’ goes handinhand with our operational and marketing motto “Quality Property at Realistic Prices with Title Deeds’’ and we try our very best to deliver superior service to our clients. This is highlighted by presenting ‘pick of the bunch’ quality properties in the market, professionally displayed on two websites www.fitzgeraldcyprus.com and www.fitzgeraldprestige.com Both worldclass websites are widely read because of their outstanding detail, quality photographs and our deep commitment to supporting and promoting web optimization which positions our websites on most first page search engines about Paphos/Cyprus properties.
Demand for Paphos property continues to be steady and during the last months we have seen several properties being sold for the asking price. All the other properties being sold were within 10% of the asking price. This means that Fitzgeralds pricing is market 'correct' and is meeting the open market value of the properties being sold, and of course this also points out to buyers and sellers that the property market has stabilised.
Noting the stability factor, we are proud to announce that Fitzgeralds, after 10 years
of application, have finally gained Real Estate Licence No 637.
Having weathered the situation for so long with hard work and determination we are delighted with this certification and wish to thank all our friends, and professional associates for this wonderful achievement as well as our customers, past and present.
Cyprus Revealed in France
Two major cultural events are taking place in Paris and Avignon and both of them firmly focus on Cyprus. President Christofias will inaugurate the exhibition at the Louvre titled ‘Cyprus between Byzantium and the West from the 4th to the 16th Century,’ which will be ongoing until 28th January, 2013. The exhibition will feature 176 artefacts which recount the island’s rich and colourful history with religious icons, manuscripts, architectural fragments, silverware and ceramics on display.
Many of the exhibits are regularly displayed across Cyprus and European museums, but having them all in one exhibition is a rarity and of major significance to the visitors to the Louvre.
The Avignon rsevent focuses on the history of the ancient city of Nea Paphos covering the period from antiquity to the present time. The conference will attract historians and archaeologists interested in the Nea Paphos excavations. Paphos Mayor, Mr Vergas, will address the opening ceremony which will also include topics on the bid of Paphos as the European Capital of Culture in 2017. The archaeologists report that the site of Paphos has been inhabited since the Neolithic period. Interestingly, the founding myth of Nea Paphos (New Paphos) recounts the story of Agapenor, the Arcadian of Troy’s fame who, on his journey home, was driven by storm onto the shores of Cyprus. Paphos is also mentioned in the Acts of the
Apostles (xiii. 6) as having been visited by Paul of Tarsus (St Paul), and in the meeting with the Roman Governor, Sergius Paulus, and his conversion to Christianity. The remains of villas, palaces, theatres, fortresses and tombs of the Classical, Hellenistic and Roman periods mean that the site is of exceptional architectural and historic value. The mosaics of Nea Paphos are among the most beautiful in the world.
The port of Paphos was rebuilt by Nicocles, the last king of Paphos, at the time of Alexander III of Macedonia. Paphos became the capital of the island replacing Salamis during the Hellenistic era.
The conference is fully supported by the Cyprus Antiquities Department and it promises to be especially fascinating.
Artist’s Statement
There is a familiar quality to Miriam Mc Connon Papageorgiou‘s recent work, like they communicate something that is personal to us. Her paintings are dependent on patient observational skills and an attention to detail. The work is hugely atmospheric and exudes a nostalgia that is both beautiful and sad.
Simple and quiet domestic scenes are the subject of Miriam’s recent work. Each scene has been carefully chosen by the artist. Miriam Mc Connon
individual story.
Everyday household objects occupy each scene. These objects have been well worn and bear the evidence of time passing. Each carries its own
The absence of the human presence is felt in these paintings. It is this absence that allows the viewer to focus solely on the objects and the space they occupy. It is the simplicity of these domestic scenes that touch us and hint at the complex emotions that are evoked through the memory of simple and mundane everyday life. One cannot ignore the preoccupation with pattern in Miriam’s recent paintings. She highlights the pattern of objects, in some cases extending the pattern across the canvas, until the pattern becomes the dominant part of the painting. It is as if the artist wishes to give these simple scenes a sacred status, by taking the everyday and mundane and bringing it into the realm of the precious and adored.
Miriam’s recent paintings make us question the power that nostalgia has over us and its necessity in our lives.
Miriam Mc Connon graduated from the National College of Art and Design, Dublin, Ireland in 1999, with a BA in Fine Art Painting. In 2000 she completed a postgraduate diploma at the Cyprus College of art. She has exhibited extensively in Ireland, London and Cyprus. She has been selected as one of the artists to participate at the 5th Beijing Biennale and the VIII Biennale of drawing Pilsen this coming autumn. Her work has been recently purchased by the Cypriot Municipal galleries in Nicosia and in Limassol. Miriam lives and works in Cyprus

Troika Package and Cyprus Proposals
For the last few months the population of Cyprus has been preoccupied by consideration of the economic measures outlined by the Troika, publicised weeks ago. What is most important in trying to reach a solution is that the political parties and government have finally realised the difficulties of the economic situation and that the position of the Troika on many issues, namely wage cuts, taxes, etc. are politically unacceptable.
Белла Валиева
The Governor of the Central Bank made a statement that the Central Bank was ready to discuss with the Troika its proposals and added that the branches of Cyprus banks in Greece should become separate entities, thus reducing the implications of Greek developments on the Cyprus banking system.
On 22 October the government completed its proposals to international lenders the Troika who will now be invited to Cyprus for negotiations with a view to coming to an agreement on a bailout package by November 12. On the structural changes proposed by the Troika the government agrees on the following:
• Reform of the civil service pension scheme. It has set up a committee of experts to examine how the changes can be made, with the social insurance scheme being adapted for the civil service as well • The introduction of the national health scheme as soon as possible.
• Establishment by law, of a three year, medium term, budget plan with which annual budgets have to comply. • Introduction of an appropriate structure for managing government debt. • Encouragement of public/private cooperation. • Improvement of tax collection.
• Reform of the way the civil service operates, by introducing personnel mobility between departments and improved procedures. • Reduction of overtime in the civil service.
The major disagreements with the troika will be on privatisation (notably CyTA), the recapitalisation of the banks, the placing of cooperatives under central bank supervision, CoLA, the minimum wage, and proposals for enabling banks to take over immovable property mortgaged on non performing loans.
Government spokesman Stefanos Stefanou said that the government had worked intensively so that Cyprus can achieve a support package that safeguards workers’ rights, protects vulnerable groups and provides good economic prospects.
“The package will have a cost,” Stefanou warned, “but our focus was to draft a workable package of measures that would make it bearable, so that we will be able, with everyone’s contribution, to overcome the difficulties we face at this time.” The trade unions were offered some assurances in their meeting with President Demetris Christofias such as the government’s intention not to scrap COLA (cost of living allowance) but were warned there was little margin for changes in the Troika’s demand for scaled wage cuts in the public sector. Christofias promised unionists he would create a special committee to handle the pensions matter, together with the unions, over the next two months and assured public workers that the cost of living allowance (COLA) would not be scrapped, but reformed. Meanwhile, a proposal by SEK Union for the government to supply €30 million to support employment, especially among youths, was viewed positively by the president, who said there should be no problem in releasing the funds, once the bailout has been agreed.
The proposals provide a basis for negotiation and convergence of views, but the time schedule is too tight to meet the November 12 deadline. It is possible, however, that, since the cases of Spain and Portugal are highly complex and will be considered concurrently by the Euro Group, these issues may not be resolved and more time will be given. It all depends on how the recapitalisation of the banks will be dealt with. If that is resolved, there is scope for agreement on time.
