We Listen To You August is by far the most challenging of times. As the whole of the Mediterranean heads for the beach for a wellearned holiday, the rest of us cope with the ‘inbetween’ state, battling not only heat and humidity but the general business slowdown in town. Coincidently, our northern European neighbours have the same idea too, and flock to Cyprus to soak up the sun and the sea… and just about dinner time, with the spectacular sunsets and cooling sea breezes, there comes a validation that it makes a lot of sense to have a house in this sunny island paradise. Where better, you may ask? Certainly Cyprus has a lot to offer anthropologists, archaeologists, botanists, business entrepreneurs or just to escapees from the big city yearning for a more relaxing retirement scene. Obviously, they have not reckoned on the August ‘inbetween’ rule, where half of businesses close their doors and the other half seem to take holidays whilst at work! In the true Cypriot style however, you can have things done, though it takes some effort calling on business colleagues, partners, friends, aunts and uncles but it can be done. For Fitzgerald’s August was a busy time. We’ve been wide awake (it was not easy when siesta time beckoned) and we sold no fewer than five properties. Surprisingly, the buyers come well prepared, well researched and market savvy and most importantly, are very optimistic in their investment and Cyprus. Most found us through our website www.fitzgeraldcyprus.com and are avid observers of the property market. In this most difficult of times and major market uncertainties, the appeal of Fitzgerald’s is our range of quality properties at realistic prices with Title Deeds. The Brits and Russians continue to be our foremost buyers as well as other buyers who come to us from around the globe; a recent request came from a Scottish lady currently living in Bangkok, to arrange to view our properties when she arrives later this September, and a Russian from Canada on a ‘flying 2 day visit’ to view his selection of our properties in mid September. The feedback is indeed positive and many clients view our website as an excellent introduction to the property market and to Paphos in general. Our high level of expertise in the Cyprus property market, pricing trends and judgment of demand has earned us a reputation for correctly judging the market supplydemand without the need for heavy discounting or ‘hope values’. We have the balance right and we are delivering what our buyers want, no matter what season of the year. September promises to be busy as well with a promising number of bookings taken already.
Many prefer the ‘quieter’ (and cooler) September to combine a holiday with a property search, and of course, Cyprus holiday fever will settle down by then so we can get back to ‘business as usual’ till next August. Elena and Bella, will be onhand to help (Bella just returned from maternity leave) and once Anna (MandziakFitzgerald) finishes her dissertation for her MSc Real Estate (due end this month) we will all be on deck focusing hard on continuing to improve our customer service and range of properties for our customers. Fitzgerald’s continues to be active in the local community and charity work. We were delighted to sponsor the ‘Help for Heroes’ concert in Pissouri amphitheater held at the end of August. As a former RAF officer and tactical coordinator on P3 Orions, help for servicemen is something I get excited about. Fitzgerald’s have offered to make a standing donation of €100 to the ‘H4H’ charity for each sale made, and for any introduction of property with Title Deeds received, in September. In the meantime, some outstanding examples of the sales this month are:

Big On Ideas Our new office addition – a big map. After nearly 5 months of trying we have finally achieved our aim to secure permission to reproduce the Cyprus map on the office wall. A big thank you goes to the Lands and Survey Department and to Paphos 2020 printing works who were a tremendous help. Getting your bearings has never been easier! The 5m by 6 m map shows entire west end of Cyprus and includes Limassol where we aim to expand next. Even though it was a challenge to find the appropriate file, we see the map as a key selling tool which complements our primary activity and that is to sell real estate. Most of our clients are overseas visitors and many have major difficulties putting locations into perspective. For new visitors, Pachna, Pissouri, Coral Bay or Polis, for example, mean very little. The map makes it so easy to connect the location dots. The map shows villages and towns as well as sandy beaches, forests, historical monuments, elevations and, of course, roads systems. When buying property all of these are very important considerations whether you are looking for a holiday home or your permanent residence. Our clients are over the noon about it and so are we. Apostolos Pavos Avenue is a busy tourist thoroughfare and we are very happy with the location, but we did not take into account an additional very pleasant benefit of the map... a regular flow of tourist who just call in just to get their bearings and put locations into perspective. All are welcome!
Unmissable H4H concert at Pissouri amphitheatre Fitzgerald’s was immensely proud to be approached as one of the first sponsors for the August Help For Heroes (H4H) charity concert. There was a fantastic turnout last month on Saturday 24th August and the amazing Pissouri Amphitheatre – a modern recreation of the old theatre at Curium – was almost full to capacity. Supported by some of the islands best vocal performers, the programme under the musical direction of Andrew Oliver included many well loved songs from pop anthems through to classical arias. This was a completely oneoff concert, probably never to be repeated. It was also an awesome environment to stand and share a message about the Fitzgerald business in front of the VIP guests – including Station Commander Akrotiri, Group Captain J Linter OBE & his wife Anne; Bob Humphries (Major retired), the events coordinator for Episkopi Garrison, Sir Michael Beavis KCB, CBE, AFC and the Mukhtar of Pissouri, Christos Foutas and members of his family. Daryl Fitzgerald had a clear stage when he announced that A.Mandziak Estate Agency Ltd would give €100 to the charity for each introduction of property with title deeds for a month after the Concert for Heroes. Thereafter the Fitzgerald presence was maintained by Lisa Sofokleous of the Hill View restaurant team, who is the company’s representative in Pissouri; she reports an excellent response. The offer stands for the month. The concert proper opened with Martin Rhodes whose Sinatra favourites are perhaps the most loved swing tunes of half a generation: My Way and more. He was then joined by acclaimed ‘Fusion’ soprano Tina Chester for the romantic duet: If Tomorrow Never Comes. Tina continued in a classical vein, finishing with Un Giorno Per Noi with young dancer Ella Simmonds providing a charming visual diversion. The superlative programme then continued with three moving numbers from Judith Evans Davies, whose wonderful Welsh voice inspired the audience; the applause was rapturous as Judith is rarely seen in such venues. Judith also donated her appearance fee to the charity. Martin then introduced surprise performer Peter
Hindmarch; only two weeks earlier, Peter had volunteered his services to MD Andrew Oliver, who cleverly made space to include a poignant song – entitled Afghanistan (We live for them) for which Peter had written the lyrics. After a stunning moment of silence, more thunderous applause! A change of tempo was introduced as dynamic Paphosbased singer, Kaela Santosh immediately moved the audience into action with a giant Mexican wave around the theatre. Soon, with pop classics like Dancing in the Street; everyone was on their feet and, before the first half came to a close, Kaela had a massive conga line snaking round the stage. She was then joined by Tina Chester and Martin Rhodes for Going Home a touching lyric set to Dvorak's Largo from the 9th symphony: From The New World In the interval, the Blevins Franks Champagne Draw for a magnum of fizz was well received; also the paintings auction and the Prize Draw. For the second set, the newlook Abba Dabba Do – also based in Paphos entertained with songs from their new show; original partners Bonnie, John and Andrew have been joined by Jo Allsop who brings a real allround ability to the role of Frida . The audience showed their appreciation by flocking onto the stage to dance and join in the final Abba classic: Thank you for the Music. ‘It was a truly inspiring and enjoyable evening’ commented one member of the audience after the last strains of the final number – Land of Hope and Glory, a hugely difficult song delivered impeccably by Tina Chester – had resounded through the amphitheatre. This was a wonderful finale to the dream which organiser June Ainsworth has long held – a successful fundraiser for the charity nearest to her heart: Help for Heroes. The event made over €6000 for the charity. Later Daryl confirmed in an interview with the national paper Cyprus Daily: ‘We are new to sponsorship of this kind but, as a former Australian Airforce officer – I was tactical coordinator on P3 Orions I have empathy with the military service personnel whom this charity supports. We are proud to be involved.’

Cyprus: more than sun. sea and great social life When people come to Cyprus to buy a holiday home or to live here full time, there are always a number of things that bring them to the island – those in the title being amongst the foremost reasons expressed. There’s also another ‘S; for families with young children, Schooling. The Paphos area has many good schools at all levels. Something that occasionally gets lost in the marketing facts is that Cyprus is also an island full of history with a patchwork past of conquerors and kings – Richard the Lionheart was married to Queen Berengaria here; in fact he spent more time in Cyprus than he did in Britain. Who can blame him? If history interests you and if knowing more about Cyprus of old would influence your decision to buy in what is frequently seen as a modern island with all ‘mod cons’, then look out for ‘My Old Acquaintance: Yesterday in Cyprus’; a book written by Barbara Cornwall Lyssarides; an American who came to Cyprus and wrote for many years for Cyprus national newspapers. Her prose is lyrical as she describes how things were in her time (1999) and earlier. You can find the book on Amazon. For an earlier view – and lots to amuse – check out a 1965 Tourism video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lHKPy2KTdC0 One of our ‘Digest’ contributors was here at that time and says that much of what’s depicted is quite accurate and, of course, the north was not split from the south till 1974. In fact much is still the same nowadays; one of the delightful things about exploring the island’s countryside when you have decided upon your house, is that you can still find villages, for instance, where they beat the olive trees on ladders to dislodge the crop – although a modern slant has popped up in some places, where they stand on the back of a flatbed truck! It’s not just sea, sun and a truly terrific social life (if you want it) – Cyprus is also an island of history and mystery, which can still be discovered if you take the time.
