Exhibitions and events

This Summer and Autumn, the Fitzwilliam Museum offers a host of unusual exhibitions, events and happenings, so we hope that gives you an excuse to return to this extraordinary treasure-house again and again, and enjoy its varied programmes.

For instance, later this month we celebrate our new acquisition, Nicolas Poussin’s magisterial picture Extreme Unction, from his series of The Seven Sacraments painted between 1638 and 1640. This special display reunites the picture with three more paintings from the same, now sadly scattered, series – Eucharist, Confirmation and Marriage – which are being lent to us by His Grace the Duke of Rutland. Also on show is the Fitzwilliam’s other, late, work by Poussin, Rebeccca and Eliezer, together with another version of the same subject, painted earlier in the artist’s career, represented here by an

interesting early copy by a follower of Poussin, recently cleaned by the Museum’s Hamilton Kerr Institute and revealed to be a work of the highest quality. Moreover, the former Director of The Louvre, Professor Pierre Rosenberg, will be in Cambridge to give three lectures on the theme of Poussin in England as guest of the Centre for Research in the Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities (CRASSH). For more details visit: www.crassh.cam.ac.uk. The Museum is also participating in a series of regular themed events: Open Cambridge, between 13-15 September, aims to share the city’s secrets with residents and visitors

alike. The Fitzwilliam is always open, but look out for the special tours of the Museum’s less familiar treasures. We are also pleased to be part of the Big Draw - the largest drawing festival in the world - with special events at the Museum and all over Cambridge. The Cambridge Festival of Ideas celebrates research across the arts and the sciences and fully involves all eight of the University of Cambridge Museums. This provides an ideal opportunity to showcase the work of the Fitzwilliam’s MINIARE project – a partnership between the Department of Manuscripts at the Fitzwilliam, the

Hamilton Kerr Institute, and the Departments of Chemistry, Physics, History of Art and the History and Philosophy of Science – which delves into how manuscripts were made, and where their pigments came from.

The night of longing: Love and desire in Japanese prints 1 October 2013 to 12 January 2014 Shiba Gallery (14) An exhibition of Japanese woodcuts and books of the Edo and Meiji periods (18th and 19th centuries) depicting lovers from literature and life. Images range from lovers yearning for absent partners and expressing their longing in letters and poems; dramatic scenes of thwarted or desperate lovers, sometimes on the verge of suicide; ‘risqué prints’ (abuna-e), with suggestions of eroticism or hints that sex is near at hand, through to more explicit images of sexual partners (shunga or ‘spring pictures’) and their context in erotic books; assignations in and around Edo (Tokyo) and the route to the pleasure quarter at night. Artists include Harunobu, Utamaro, Hiroshige, Kunisada, Kuniyoshi and Yoshitoshi. The exhibition is based on the collection of the Fitzwilliam Museum and is designed to complement the exhibition at the British Museum Shunga: Sex and pleasure in Japanese Art (3 October 2013 - 5 January 2014). Edmund de Waal On White - Porcelain stories from the Fitzwilliam 29 November 2013 – 23 February 2014 Galleries 33, 26 & 28 This exceptional exhibition sees three galleries of the Fitzwilliam Museum taken over with installations by renowned potter, and Cambridge graduate, Edmund de Waal. The re-curated spaces feature objects from de Waal’s residency in China last summer, pieces from the Museum’s permanent collection, poetry, photographs and letters. Highlights include two major installations. The first of these, a thousand hours, is one of de Waal’s most ambitious to date and was the centrepiece of a major exhibition at the Alan Cristea Gallery in London. The work comprises 1,000 pots encased in two large walk-through vitrines. A second featured work has been specially commissioned for this show.

Exhibitions Origins of the Afro Comb: 6,000 years of culture, politics and identity To 3 November Mellon (13) & Octagon (8) Material culture on display includes hundreds of remarkable combs – from pre-dynastic Egypt to modern-day black fist combs referencing the Black Power Movement – as well as associated images and sculpture showing the wide variety of hair styles found in Africa and around the world. There will be a special area for digital interaction, personal stories about hair combs and African type hair, plus live demonstrations of contemporary styling practices. Origins of the Afro Comb is part of Black History Matters – the Fitzwilliam Museum’s programme of events promoting the importance of Black history. It also complements celebrations for Black History Month every October and forms part of the University of Cambridge Museums Connecting Collections programme, funded by Arts Council England. A world of private mystery: John Craxton, RA (1922 - 2009) 2 December 2013 – 21 April 2014 Mellon (13) An exhibition to celebrate the life and work of John Craxton (the first since a Whitechapel Gallery survey of 1967). Craxton was a person with strong connections with Cambridge, spending key war-time periods in and around the city. The exhibition will trace his development as an artist, both through his travels and the influence of other major artists during his lifetime.

Poussin Re-display of Poussin’s Extreme Unction From 20 August 2013 French Art 17th-19th centuries (Gallery 4) Thanks to the generosity of His Grace, the Duke of Rutland, the Museum will from August have the opportunity to display the three remaining paintings from Nicolas Poussin’s first series of The Seven Sacraments, painted between 1637 and 1642 for his friend and patron, Cassiano dal Pozzo. The three paintings, representing Marriage, Confirmation and Eucharist, will be displayed in the French Gallery along with another from the series, Extreme Unction, which the Museum acquired in 2012 (made possible by the support of the Heritage Lottery Fund, the Art Fund, many charitable trusts and thousands of individuals). In proximity with nearby Gallery 7, the series can be considered in the context of paintings and sculpture by artists whom Poussin knew in Rome, or whose works he would have seen there.
