A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT OF FIU FIU is the place of big ideas and close connections. Our university is unique in our broad reach, through research and community engagement, and our meaningful relationships, driven by faculty and staff who care deeply about every student. As the FIU community moves forward with a strategic plan designed for the 21st century, we are poised and ready to take the university to its Next Horizon of student success and research excellence. This vision of FIU’s Next Horizon is driven by bold thinking. It is fueled by building on the cuttingedge research, world-class programs, innovation, and future-forward teaching that has made FIU a leading public research institution. It will be realized through the power of philanthropy.

"EVERYONE AT FIU CARES ABOUT EVERY STUDENT, EVERY DAY." 4

FIU serves a diverse student population that represents the future of American public universities. We challenge our students to reach their full potential in an academic environment that is both rigorous and supportive, through innovative approaches to student success and learning, generous scholarships, and a remarkable ethos of care. Indeed, everyone at FIU cares about every student, every day, and in so many different ways. FIU has a deep impact on the lives of people – as an anchor in our community and a driver of economic prosperity. The Next Horizon offers unprecedented opportunities and obligations to impact our community more deeply and to lead more boldly in areas of teaching, research, entrepreneurship, and public policy.

The future of FIU is full of promise, hope, and opportunity. We invite you to join us and be a part of the Next Horizon, as we bring solutions to our community, our state, our nation, and the world. Sincerely, Mark B. Rosenberg 5

OUR NATION IS BECOMING MORE GLOBAL, MORE DIVERSE, AND MORE URBAN... MORE LIKE FIU. 6

7

As one of America’s most diverse universities, we are educating a student body that represents one of the fastest-growing populations in the U.S. We are irrepressible in our pursuit of knowledge-based solutions: As a top-tier research university, we are on the leading edge of knowledge creation. At FIU, research is the spark that ignites new industries, businesses, and new economy workforce development. As other universities attempt to keep up with the latest trends, we set them. As others ponder their future, we create ours.

ONE STUDENT, ONE COMMUNITY, ONE BOLD STEP AT A TIME. THIS VISION WILL BE DRIVEN BY OUR $750 MILLION NEXT HORIZON CAMPAIGN. WE WILL GET THERE. IT’S THE FIU WAY. 8

9

FIU IS OF MIAMI, NOT JUST IN MIAMI. HIGHER EDUCATION IS THE ENGINE THAT POWERS GREAT CITIES. FIU IS MIAMI’S POWERHOUSE. Since our founding, FIU has been deeply invested in our community. FIU has risen to national prominence, and we are the destination for students from the region and are increasingly the top choice for students from around the world. More high-achieving students from South Florida are choosing FIU over other colleges in the nation. To these students, FIU is a place near home where they can expand their horizons, working alongside gifted faculty and students from around the world. FIU is a driver of the cultural vibrancy of this city, from the cutting-edge Wolfsonian–FIU in the Art Deco District to the Jewish Museum of Florida–FIU and the Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum–FIU.

10

We created an innovative, interdisciplinary medical education curriculum that equally advances the training of our students and the health of our society. FIU’s Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine has set the standard for patient-focused education and has emerged as a program being replicated by others. By partnering with the Robert Stempel College of Public Health & Social Work, the Nicole Wertheim College of Nursing & Health Sciences, and the College of Law, FIU’s Green Family Foundation NeighborhoodHELP program ensures that our students understand the relationship between health, culture, and ethics through intensive work in our community.

11

12

Our Miami location and our long-standing research relationships in Central America, South America, and the Caribbean position FIU as the gateway to understanding and engaging with the Americas. No institution is better poised to advance our understanding of the health, economics, politics, 13 and culture of this region.

AN INVESTMENT IN FIU IS AN INVESTMENT IN THE FUTURE.

14

15

HEAD FOOTBALL COACH BUTCH DAVIS

FIU OFFERS AN UNMATCHED BREADTH OF POSSIBILITIES as only a university of 56,000+ students can. From coursework to clubs, from Division I Athletics to Model UN, our students can find communities large and small to test their ideas, work creatively, and expand their horizons.

16

17

HOW CAN A PLACE SO BIG FEEL SO PERSONALIZED? We have never grown beyond our ability to support our students, feed their entrepreneurial spirit, and challenge them to reach their potential.

FIU students come from every facet of society, representing the rich diversity of our nation and our world. They share a common sense of purpose, determination, and understanding of the work that lies ahead as they pursue their dreams, no matter what those dreams are or where those dreams take them.

FIU’s focus on student success is earning attention and investment. The Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU) selected FIU as one of only seven institutions to join the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation-funded “Frontier Set” of institutions committed to significantly increasing student access and success, and eliminating racial/ethnic and socioeconomic disparities in college attainment.

There is only one FIU, but the path to a degree is unique to every FIU student. And those paths take them to amazing places. We prepare students to succeed anywhere, now and into the future.

56,000+ PATHS. ONE DEGREE. 18

19

ACCESS TO EXCELLENCE IS OUR GREATEST RESPONSIBILITY. At FIU, every scholarship dollar is transformational. FIU students rely on generous scholarship support not only to begin their studies at FIU but also to complete them. Financial aid is often the tipping point in choosing FIU and, in some cases, whether one can afford to go to college at all.

20

21

ABOUT 2/3 OF FIU STUDENTS RECEIVE FINANCIAL AID‌ ‌a number limited only by our resources. Many more students have financial aid needs that go unmet, and even those who receive aid would benefit from additional support. Our current aid budget must grow for FIU to provide students with the ability to come to FIU and succeed here without the burden of significant financial barriers.

Each year, prospective students earn admission to FIU but cannot afford to attend. Each year, current students leave the university to take jobs to keep their finances afloat. Each year, students miss opportunities to study abroad, take an internship, or participate in research because they are balancing their coursework with a job and family.

We are grateful for the scholarship funds we have, and our record of achievement in preparing students for success is proof that those funds are well spent. We must increase the number of scholarships at FIU and the amount of aid we are able to offer our outstanding students.

23

WE ARE PERSONALIZING THE LEARNING EXPERIENCE. A modern approach to teaching meets students where they are, flexing to their individual needs, pushing them to work harder than ever while respecting the demands on their time. FIU is ready to lead this movement. FIU is equal parts high tech and high touch. We are a pioneer in online learning, having launched web-based classes before most of today’s students were born. Now it is time to flip the classroom on its head, blending traditional lectures with an active, collaborative model that is integrated across the whole FIU experience. We believe that students deserve evidence-based, learning-centered, and culturally responsive teaching, and we are blending an outstanding faculty, remarkable technology, professional staff, and student peers in a dynamic learning environment to deliver on this promise. No university has more students engaged as mentors and peer learning assistants than FIU. The Learning Assistants program, which can make the difference between passing and excelling for many students, has been recognized and praised by the White House as a “Bright Spot” in education.

SINCE ITS FOUNDING IN 1965, FIU HAS ALWAYS THOUGHT BIG. 26

FIU started with the largest first class in the history of American higher education. Today, FIU is one of the 10 largest public universities in the country and boasts more than 235,000 Panther alumni around the world. More than 12,000 dedicated students earn an FIU degree every year. The quality of our programs attracts talented students from across the nation and beyond, but make no mistake — Florida is our home. Eighty-five percent of our students come from Florida, and the majority of them stay here after graduation, as entrepreneurs, policymakers, doctors, artists, and scientists, contributing to Miami’s future. We award more bachelor’s and master’s degrees to Hispanic students than any other university in the country. 27

BETTER, BOLDER IS IN OUR DNA. Every year, we generate nearly $9 billion in economic impact through patents, startups, and university business activity. We are home to the world’s only underwater ocean research laboratory and the largest and most powerful university-based hurricane simulator. Our law graduates consistently pass the bar at among the highest rates in the state, and we produce more than 20 percent of the teachers in the MiamiDade County Public School System, one of the largest in the nation. From our founding, our forward-facing plans have been called “impossible.” Today, we find reaching our aspirations to be inevitable. We think globally because we are global. We have the facts to prove it.

TODAY’S WORLD DEMANDS MORE THAN GOOD IDEAS. WE NEED SOLUTIONS.

At FIU we translate big ideas into real-world applications. Fast. We plan to improve the capacity for our students to not just take good jobs, but to create great jobs. Building on our culture of philanthropy, fueled by StartUP FIU, we will multiply the number of patents registered by our faculty and the number of new businesses we create, bringing ideas – and jobs – to the marketplace in Miami and around the world. We will increase the number of Ph.D. degrees we award and the number of postdoctoral fellows we recruit, significantly increasing our impact on knowledge creation and innovation,

today and into the future. Our research profile has been rising at a remarkable rate, elevating FIU to the highestpossible research designation – Carnegie Research 1: Very High Research Activity – which only 3 percent of our nation’s universities can claim. Our achievements in research are attracting the best minds and emerging industries to FIU. Knowledge moves fast, and we must stay ahead of the curve to remain relevant, for our students and for the world in which we live.

reach across the world through our teaching and research.

The Next Horizon campaign will put FIU at the forefront of discovery and innovation; health and society; environment and resilience; influence and enterprise; and community, arts, and culture. This will be achieved by focusing on two pillars – student success and research excellence – and attracting investments in the following campaign objectives: • Increase scholarships and student support • Optimize 21st-century teaching • Advance a vibrant, healthy Miami • Accelerate research and discoveries • Escalate discovery to enterprise

A CALL TO ACTION FROM ALUMNUS CHAD MOSS ’94 I believe in the power of giving. I have seen the impact it has in the lives of courageous children, the futures of hardworking students, and the excellence of a young institution. Philanthropy is a force for the greater good. When President Rosenberg gave $1 million in scholarship support for first-generation college students at FIU, it was because he identifies with their experience – he was the first in his family to go to college. President Rosenberg said he also wanted to accelerate support for FIU, and to do that, “I have to do my part.” I agree with him wholeheartedly, and it is why as an FIU alumnus I continue to serve as a donor volunteer, leading others to do their part for FIU. FIU opened in 1965 and has grown to become one of the largest public universities in our nation, a trailblazer in student success

and top-ranked for research activity. FIU is about changing lives and tackling big ideas. What greater good can it do in 30 or 50 more years? That depends on what you and I are doing now for FIU. Our bold dreamers and big ideas need passionate advocates and farsighted investors who share our vision for FIU’s future. Whether you are an alumnus coming back to see us, a close friend of the family, or a new acquaintance just getting to know us, I encourage you to learn about FIU. Explore what it is doing in research and entrepreneurship, how it is innovating in teaching and learning, and where it is creating opportunities for better health and shared prosperity in our communities. Find something you care about, that you believe in. Find something at FIU that emboldens you to do your part – and get involved and give.

Sincerely,

Chad Moss Executive Vice President, Moss & Associates President, Moss Foundation, Inc. Co-Chair, Campaign Committee
