Editor’s Note

For a long time I have had the idea to produce an event containing the elements fashion, art, music and entertainment. It stayed that way until my friends Gauthier Mulala and Marvin Foe Aman convinced me to make it become reality. These two guys as well as my family and a few close friends have supported during the whole process and all my life I will be grateful for that. Because of them I have showed the guts to take this step and do what I want, to fulfill a dream and to break out of my comfort zone. Although the hard times I have had along the way and probably will have in future, doing what I do with HOLY M.O.M. Productions makes me happy, because this is what I want to do. In the last year I have met so many people in my search for participants for the first edition of Five Hours of F.A.M.E. All these people have taken the same steps I have. And they are all down to earth, working hard towards the top and always with a strong focus. I am blessed with the positive people I have surrounded myself with, like the members of the Five Hours of F.A.M.E. production crew who all share the same vision, the same goals. Armando Kitoko, Sharon Alberg, Björk Gunnarsdóttir, Carlotta Minderhout, Zoë Doest, Latifa Zian, Dennis Mainassy, thank you all for having my back! Now you know a bit of my story you can read the stories of all the participants and collaboration partners. Where they come from, what thrives them and what their goals are. Let them inspire you like they were inspired themselves to do what they love doing the most, being creative and letting their talents speak for themselves. ANNET SABANDAR

TJAJA TILAKDHARIE

Tjaja “TJAAJ” Tilakdharie was born and raised in Amsterdam. As she grew up she started developing herself more and more as a creative person and became a graphic designer. But since that wasn’t enough for her she educated herself to be a brand engineer. Now she can be even more creative and be able to adapt, create and transform. C R E AT I V I T Y Besides playing outside, watching “The Fabeltjeskrant” (a well-know Dutch children’s program with animal puppets), dancing in front of the television in her MC Hammer pants or playing Nintendo, little Tjaja was also busy drawing. After years of drawing she exchanged her little sketchbooks for bigger ones and her pencils came in all kinds of colours until the moment she was ready to switch to digital art. She wasn’t the only creative person in the family. Her brother as well was creative as a young boy. He was inspired by their aunt who was an upcoming fashion designer, but unfortunately has passed away at a young age. “My brother was inspired by my aunt, and he inspired me to be creative. My father, who is a technical engineer, inspired the raw side of me. But the simplicity, crafted, quality and clean taste I have developed myself over the years. It is more of my own and for what I stand for.” 5 H O U R S O F F. A . M . E . 0 8

S W E E T M E M O RY “I remember when I was a little girl I just went to my room after school and grabbed my pencils and a stack of sketch paper. I loved to be carried away by my fantasy and just draw. From little monsters to a graffiti piece. Even at school I always wanted to draw or create things. I guess this is where the passion for graphic design started. SUCCESS “To me success means to be able to do what you love and share this with others. It’s not about making money (but at the same time, we need money in order to do what we want), for me it’s about sharing, like telling stories. If I wasn’t a graphic designer, I would find something else to express my creativity. Perhaps I would be a painter, sculptor, tattoo-artist or a fashion designer. Something that includes drawing or creating. I just can’t get enough of it. It’s like I’m hungry to create and creating is my food.”

Posthoorn Church

Po st h o or n C hu rc h Located right in the middle of the city, on the lively Haarlemmerstraat, is one of the most important remaining 19th century neo-gothic churches of Amsterdam. The Posthoorn (Posthorn) Church is the first church built by architect P.J.H. Cuypers in Amsterdam. The same architect who would later go on to design the Central Station and the Rijksmuseum. The church is a cross basilica with three-aisled nave and clover leave shaped chorus, that had to be realised on a small plot of land and for that reason it has two galleries on top of each other.) The building started in 1861 and the towers were erected between 1887 and 1889. During the 70’s the disused church was in danger of being dismantled, but which was prevented thanks to a plan of The Posthoorn Foundation. In 1989 the restored Posthoorn Church recommissioned. The mid-section could from that moment on be booked for special occasions for the business and private market. The church features

all modern comforts such as central heating, dressing areas and catering facilities. The heated mid-section with its atmospheric ambience can be split into two areas, which makes the location perfectly suitable for congresses, cultural presentations, lectures, formal dinners, marriages and concerts. Po st h o or n C hu rc h c el l ar The Posthoorn church also contains a cellar supremely suited for parties, workshops and presentations. Combined with the upper area it can be used for formal dinners and the downstairs vaults are suited for dance parties.

Steven Sikkens With great velocity he comes riding on his bike, searching for a spot on the sidewalk to park his bicycle and apologises with a big smile for the few minutes he is late. Steven Sikkens was born on Curacao and when still a baby adopted by a Dutch couple. He was raised in Groningen and for many years now he lives in Amsterdam-East. Next to being an artist Steven is also a psychotherapist. E XC I T E D Steven is looking forward to the shoot, even though he is not quite sure what to expect. He also thinks it will take hours. After he has been told he won’t need makeup, neither has to change outfits three times and thus will make it to his next appointment on time, he seems relieved. T H E C YC L I N G L A N E N E X T T O T H E W E E S P E R T R E K VA A R T Behind the Amstel trainstation there is a cycling lane. The spot that Steven chose to have his picture taken. He explains this is his day to day cycling route. A long straight route that as of the fall shows the verges covered in colourful wild flowers and boats passing by. A route where he lets his days pass by and where often new ideas for new pieces are created. It is also a road that takes him past his former workspace, the Penitentair Psychiatrisch Centrum Amsterdam, that till 2009 was called the FOBA (forensische observatie en begeleidingsafdeling). This is where crisis intervention takes place for mentally disturbed detainees from all over the country and is located in one of the towers of the Bijlmerbajes. Steven tells about his experiences as a doctor in this institution and how these still inspire him. But these aren’t the

only things that move him to making his paintings. FROM MICHEL ANGELO AND H U G O P R AT T T O L I F E “As a self-taught man I am always open for various influences. I once started illustrating my own paper on the Renaissance in high school. I drew paintings and sculptures of Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci after models in books. I was suprised how well these drawings looked. At the same time comics such as Kuifje and Guust Flater were of great influence. Just like cartoonist Hugo Pratt with his minimalistic black lines and Moebius with his unlimited versatility and fantasy. Furthermore I feel connected to Hieronimus Bosch with his apocalyptic scenes and the painters of the low lands such as Rembrandt and Vermeer. Nowadays many of the modern painters, such as Picasso, Basquiat, etc. also inspire me. I let myself get inspired by many things. Music in many aspects is the first muse due to the direct affect on the emotion, without the interference of images and words. Often I have music on when I paint. Many titles of my work come from song lyrics. But the biggest source of inspiration is life itself.”

Hélène Terlien Hélène Terlien was adopted as a baby by Dutch parents and grew up in t Gooi. She would like to have attended Rietvelt Art Academy, but her parents had other ideas. The self-taught Hélène creates most wonderful oil paintings in which freedom takes central stage. YO U T H F U L M E M O R I E S “My earliest memories of drawing are me, as a young girl standing in the middle of a room, drawing on a blackboard, with kids standing behind me. I later checked with my parents. The image was correct; it was the day we collected my little sister from the orphanage, to be precise. I also remember going to the heath with my dog and my sketchbook. I just sat there sketching anything that entered my mind. Sometimes these were strange images. By going there, I could escape reality and it worked a treat. I have not had an easy youth but it did stimulate my creativity.“ TA L E N T “Although I had always had a talent for drawing, this was not stimulated by my parents. I would dearly loved to have attended Rietvelt Arts Academy, but they had rather had me choose a training with a job guarantee. So I trained as a secretary at a school for economic and administration. (M.e.a.o). I myself now as a parent, pay close attention to my children’s abilities and what they want to do. My eldest son expressed his desire to join the army at the age of 10. I thought it a horrific idea, but I relented, since that was what he wanted. What I wanted was irrelevant.” RECURRENT THEME “It seems as if that freedom is a recurrent them in my paintings, such as birds. 5 H O U R S O F F. A . M . E . 1 4

Birds can fly away. Flying away stands for breaking free. Free from reality, fly away outside society. My paintings touch on reality but always only get to the edge. Apparently freedom springs from my subconscious. I have essentially brought my kids up on my own and consequently knew little freedom. But I was always there for them and in fact I still am. Only my youngest lives at home, but in a while he too will be living on his own. I am curious as to whether freedom in my paintings will take another form. Perhaps by that time I will be living on Ibiza for a part of the year by then, since I adore the bohemian lifestyle. It too acknowledges freedom. Yes, it keeps coming back.” LOVE “My partner was the love of my life. A true bohemian, he could teach me a thing or two. Others clearly saw the love we had for each other. It was remarkable, since you do not often meet someone who is meant for you. The loss had an enormous impact on me and I buried my head in my paintings. He died at age of only 36, much too young. I buried my head into my painting only seven day after his death. Because painting feels like safe place, a place I can flee to. Where I can pour my thoughts on the canvas. It has always been like that and it will always stay that way.”

Hélène’s work can be seen at Gallery Très Arts in Breda.

Frank van Meurs Although he finished a study in graphic design, he followed his father’s footsteps being a tactical police detective. After several experiences in his life, which negatively affected him, Frank started painting 4 years ago and he never stopped doing that. MUSIC Frank works at home, in a 8 m2 space, where the walls are decorated with album covers wrapped in plastic of mainly artists from the eighties and in the corner a guitar. Every now and then Frank performes with the band he’s part of. “But I don’t play that well”, he says in a slightly apologizing way and with a friendly smile on his face. Music is important to him, a source of inspiration for his artwork. “Especially artists which songs contain a certain message inspire me. I am always trying to get the atmosphere of a song into the painting.” N E W YO R K His first work is a mixed media artwork of New York, a collage of the many places of interest this city has. Frank is fond of big cities. “Every time I visit one I feel like it’s home. I do experience it in another way, not like my wife. When we were in New York and drove along The Bronx, we saw a shabby neighbourhood or walls sprayed with graffitti and I still can see the beauty of it, but my wife doesn’t even pay attention. ” He has already participated twice in a digital exhibition in New York. One of his paintings was exhibited on a skyscraper in Brooklyn and five of his artworks was to be seen on the videoscreens at Times Square. And that is absolutely something to be proud of. U LT I M AT E G OA L With pride he thinks back at these moments. For Frank it’s just the beginning. All he wants is to be a fulltime artist. His ultimate goal is an exhibition in the Guggenheim Museum in New York. “Because one can have dreams…” he says, again with that friendly smile.

Davor Smoljan Davor ‘Deesaster’ Smoljan, contemporary artist, muralist and designer is originally from originally from Sarajevo -capitol city of Bosnia & Herzegovina- former Yugoslavia. As the civil war broke out in his country and hometown, his family fled the country, seeking refuge and a safe, non life-threatening environment elsewhere. Their roads have taken them to The Netherlands, 21 years ago.

COMIC BOOKS “As a kid, I always wanted to be an artist. A comic book artist in particular. the very first visual influences in my life come from stuff like horror comic books and the endless list of cartoons. As far as I can remember, I loved the high contrast black and white ink style comic books from Bonelli Comics from Italy and in particular, the Dylan Dog series, as written by Tiziano Sclavi and drawn by Angelo Stani. These books were a fantastic homage to the true thriller and mystery genre. All black and white and incredibly well written. The drawing style is much like Frank Miller’s -who is also a great contributor to my earliest influences- although Miller writes different type of fantasy stories and often depicts his characters in a stereotypical manner whose worlds are bound by sex and violence. Later on, during my teenage years, I fell in love with everything Michael Turner ever created -who had sadly passed away from cancer in the late 90s- and from there on, I was introduced to a whole new world of graphic art. Buying David Mack’s ‘KABUKI’ graphic novel was probably the most memorable moment in my late teens as to what later became an introduction and -very much so- an education as to what art truly can be. I highly recommend ‘KABUKI’ to pretty much anyone. Obviously throughout these years and art classes in high school -as well as further self-education in art- I was introduced to all of art history and was specifically drawn to modern art and post-modern art. Most of the books in my studio are either comic books, graphic novels or stuff on modern art and the new contemporary movement. “

I N S P I R AT I O N “Anything can work as an inspiration. I particularly like to explore the abandoned area’s wherever I go. There’s much in these spaces or buildings that once was, yet now lives a completely different still life of its own. a wide range of free material is often at hand, so I’ll end up taking salvaged wood, paper, posters or even steel back home to my studio. Color, texture, music, moments in life, all of these can work differently depending on what exactly about them speaks to me, but yes, pretty much any of these can hit a trigger in my mind to process into any of my works. C O L L A B O R AT I O N “I’d love to work someday with 1xRUN from Detroit. This is a separate branch from the Inner State Gallery (also in Detroit) who focus on releasing limited edition prints with established and up and coming artists and do this at an extremely reasonable rate. There’s many galleries in the United States I’d be completely delighted to work with, like Thinkspace Gallery from LA or White Walls in San Francisco. These galleries really put on serious shows and do so from the perspective of really focussing on promoting as much talent as possible from both established and upcoming artists.” U LT I M AT E G OA L “Drawing was something that I always used to do, as early as a very young kid. Throughout the years this has developed into what I do today. I usually spend my time now painting, collaging and designing. My ultimated goal in life is Peace, Love & Happiness. At all times. If I get to paint in the meantime, that’s a bonus. 5 H O U R S O F F. A . M . E . 1 9

Saleh Mosavipour Artist Saleh “Mossa” Mosavipour wanted to be a construction worker when he was little because he had no imagination. But then he got more interested in art and gained knowledge about it and things turned out the other way. Nowadays he is absolutely not working on a construction site but at home, in his own living room, working on the most beautiful paintings. Can anyone tell us where that little boy with lack of imagination is? FA M I LY Saleh is born in Teheran. He was 10 years old when he and his family moved to The Netherlands and they have a very strong bond. He is a typical family guy and spends a lot of time with his family. Their very supportive in his career as an artist. “They love it, I am frequently being asked to draw a painting fort hem. “ Back in Teheran he surprised his father with his talent. “I was about 8 years old and I drawed a well-known soccer player and showed it to my father. That suprised look on his face… haha.. if I close my eyes I can still see it very clearly.“ But still that was not the moment he wanted to be an artist.”It were the soccer players in the streets of Teheran I adored. Those soccer players were construction workers. So that could mean only one thing: being a construction worker means you can play soccer in the streets!” P E R S I A N P O E T RY A N D A R T There are a lot of bright colours to see in the old Persian poetry and art. Saleh also uses these colours in his paintings. But it’s not just poetry and art which influence him, but also contemporary artists such as Françoise Nielly, Peter Terrin en Voka are huge inspiration and a drive to do what he does. “Even after a vacation I haved noticed I got inspired by things. By painting Buddha after visiting Thailand for example or sketching an African woman I saw at the airport.” W O R K S PA C E Saleh works at home, in his living room. “I really love that, it is my own little spot. I paint when I want, I can start any moment if I want to. I often paint at night with everything I need in one room and there isn’t anyone or anything that can disturb me.” TO K YO “I love travelling, meeting new people, gain knowledge, get to know myself. My goal is to exhibit my works in many different places and show my work to the world. But Tokyo would really be the top of the bill. Painting and showing my works there would be absolutely a dream come true.”

Marlot van Laren In an apartment in Amsterdam-West the livingroom of the fond of laughing and spontaneous handbagdesigner Marlot has been magically transformed into a studio. Furthermore she studies at the Amsterdam Fashion Insitute (AMFI) and has a parttime job as a receptionist. A true entrepreneur, with a passion for bags.

IN THE GENES Her liking for beautiful fashion items doesn’t come from a stranger. Where Marlot adores bags and even bought her first bag at the age of fifteen from her first salary, her mother has a true shoe addiction. The same mother who herself made clothes for her children on her sewing machine, making its noise a familiar one to Marlot. Her technical skills and spatial understanding she has inherited from her grandfather. But also the practical solving of day to day problems. Like the problem of not having enough money to buy more bags and thus using her mother’s old sewing machine to create her own. “What I didn’t know back then was that that was the moment I found my true passion and I am able to now enjoy that everyday!” Unaware that she was taking her first steps to becoming a promising handbagdesigner. D OI NG T H E WOR K “When I’m working, I usually work on several different bags at the same time, which takes up a lot of space. You’ll find pieces of leather, unfinished bags and tools everywhere. But as I don’t want my flatmates to have to eat in the midst of leather remains, I always make sure I clean up. Luckily I can count on their support and often they turn a blind eye on the mess.” Even though Marlot prefers to work whilst having her flatmates or other people around her, this is not always the case. Instead she finds good company in

her iPad and Netflix. Whilst watching tvshows such as Dexter or Breaking Bad or a live show by stand up comedian Ronald Goedemond, she works assiduously. IDEAL A big old shed in the middle of the forrest designed as a studio would be the ideal work place for Marlot. A studio with all the required machinery and an enormous work-bench. “Every now and then I take a break to walk my dog through the forrest. Making purses is considerably labourintensive and requires much focus. When a patern hasn’t been cut on the millimeter precisely, you will always notice. Or if you accidentely stitch crooked, you will have to start all over again, as a hole in the fabric is something you will always see. Therefore that break walking my dog is very important to me.” SPE C IA L AS SIG N M E N T S One of the directors of the company Marlot works for, wanted a leather laptopbag. Especially for this assignment Marlot bought a industrial leathermachine and was able to create a beautiful bag for him. “It cost me blood, sweat and tears, but he never knew.” But it was that precious acquisition that turned out to be the beginning of her own company: BY MC. “I always feel flattered when a new assignment comes in. The fact that somebody trusts me to create their ideal purse means the world to me. As long as I keep on receiving this trust, I am a fortunate person.”

Kenley Chittick Denim lover Kenley has turned his hobby into his work and now owns Dumluck, Handcrafted Garments. He produces handcrafted products for male Dutch denim fans. Inside his Amsterdam studio he is working hard fulfilling his dream. In five years he hopes his brand would be among the top denim brands of The Netherlands. YO U T U B E “Everything I do now, I taught myself by studying films on YouTube and denim producers, among other things. I researched which machines the pros use and which techniques they employ to get the jeans looking just as awesome as I wanted them. This led to a quest through The Netherlands, Belgium and even Germany, in search of right vintage industrial sewing machines. I also went in search of the best raw selvage denim fabrics (unprocessed denim textile), which I eventually found at suppliers in Japan and the US.” He shared his denim journey (i.e. the process of personalizing raw denim, by simply wearing them intensively and in the process creating your own pattern into the fabric) via social media with his friends and other denim enthusiasts. Soon he was receiving orders from friends, family and later on even complete strangers both national and international. His first mini-collection made up of only two different pants, one denim jack and leather key ring, and went brilliantly and Dumluck was picked up by leading denim websites such as Denimhunters, Long John and RawR Denim. NAKED & FAMOUS “I am inspired by a combination of things such as place I visit, various styles I see in the streets, magazines and blogs. It is difficult to explain exactly why I am inspired by something but if I am touch emotionally by something, I can still be inspired by it during the process of designing and I will try to translate that into the products I make. Cooperation with NAKED & FAMOUS, a Canadian jeans designer, to me would seem fantastic. They use the weirdest and most creative denim fabrics. I think together we could bring out a cool collection.” DREAM, DARE, DO “If I had not broken out of my comfort zone, I would never have the courage to quit my job, only to fully commit to Dumluck. I want to keep improving and continue to putting Dumluck on the map. In addition I want to keep developing personally by learning new skills such as photography and who know what might cross my path.

“Life begins at the end of your comfort zone

Joska van Oosten Joska van Oosten, arts teacher and illustrator, has creativity running through her veins. Both her parents are fond of painting and have encouraged her to draw and she turned out a truly creative millipede. This is for a little girl who wanted to become a miller.

N AT U R A L TA L E N T Joska grew up in a wooden house in a small village along the river Amstel, and lived there with her parents and little brother. “As a kid I used to be – and still am - fond of small huts, lovely little houses and snug spots. I like drawing them too. A mill seemed to me undoubtedly, one of the coziest places to live“.Since Joska was able to sit and hold a pencil she was drawing and creating. She was only eight when she started taking drawing lessons and by the time she was 15 years old she was approached by her French teacher, who needed illustrations for a children’s book. She wanted to become an illustrator but chose to apply for the Academy of Fine Art in Education, because she also liked to teach and work with children. Joska rapidly developed and one year later, at the age of 16, she was invited for an application interview at this Academy. “I was extremely nervous, but I was admitted. I graduated after four year and my real life could start.” I L L U S T R AT I N G A N D (MUCH) MORE After her studies Joska travelled extensively and worked in childcare. After a while she realized what she wanted to combine her two skills. She wanted to become an illustrator, draw and combine both and work as an arts teacher. That lead to her becoming an freelance illustrator and arts teacher. She illustrates in commission and makes her own work. “Ever since my graduation I’ve been making a drawing every day and I’ve kept it up to this day, haha.” Joska posts her ‘ daily drawings’ on Facebook. Besides this, she is also a “ Feesttante”. The

“Feesttantes” is an unusual face painting agency, that turns adults and children at all kinds of events into walkin art pieces by painting their faces. She also teaches new “feesttantes” face painting skills. POST OP POOTJES “Because I like drawing so much but I don’t like to be at my desk the whole day all on my own, I thought: “I have to think of something that will allow me to keep drawing, while meeting people at the same time. How can I share my art with them and use my art to bring people together. That’s how” Post op Pootjes” came into being. On a festival or any other event I go looking for interesting and funny stories that I translate into live drawn post card, since there is hardly anyone left who has the time to send a post card nowadays. I draw while you write down a beautiful message for the fortunate receiver, the correct or incorrect address and post it straight away in my letterbox. I will see to it that your postcard gets stamped and the postcard will be posted the next day for real.” D R AW I N G I S M A G I C “Through drawing you can create anything you want. Create new worlds. Drawing is universal, a language everyone understands and through which you can reach out anyone. It would be cool if eventually make a living out of illustrating, on the other hand I would then miss kids. I am now in a position which allows me to pick and choose commissions that suit and appeal to me. That makes me happy!”

Justin Grootkerk New dad and owner of streetwear label Me Merde Justin Grootkerk one day concluded the city was full of creative people. “I then saw an opportunity to cooperate with some really good artists and that’s how Me Merde became a fact.” MY OWN BOSS “Making your own decisions and taking responsibility for your own success and happiness” He already knew, as a child that he wanted to run his own business. His father had always been a role model to him. He was always well organized and was there for his family.” FA M I LY Family life is also important to Justin, since he now is a father too and realizes that eventually life centers around the moments one has with one’s nearest and dearest. “Let’s enjoy life as much as we can.” FUTURE “Since I am a starting entrepreneur, I work from home. I like that because I feel comfortable working in my own atmosphere. My future workspace will be modern equipped with as many of the latest gadgets and novelties as possible. He would like to, at some point, cooperate with L.A.Ink. “In Europe we have a substantial supply of tattoo artists, of a very high level, with whom we are already collaborating. This would be a nice expansion of the business. Stability is his goal though. “You can wish for money and success but that does not necessarily means that you’re stable.”

Demy Roelofs Only 19 years of age, hand bag designer Demy Roelofs established Taurú six months ago, after she designed a hand bag for her best friend’s birthday. Her future is very clear to her and she’s now working to realize her dreams. S U C C E S S F U L C O M B I NAT I O N “My grandmother taught me how to operate the sewing machine. I was young and was making dolls and clothes.” Her grandmother taught her everything there is to know about the sewing machine. That was an early sign of her creativity. Demy inherited business talent from her father. All and all a good combination for starting a successful creative business. Demy is doing that part time, aside from her marketing and communication studies, which she hopes to graduate this year. She looks forward to this. “When I finish my studies, I would be able to focus completely on expanding my business.” SUPPORT “I am getting positive reactions from people I know and even from people I don’t know. My brand always gets a mention whenever I talk to someone. I am often complimented on enthusiasm. My parents proudly tell their relatives and friends what I am doing.” A M S T E R DA M Demy likes to be in Amsterdam. “ I have often moved in my life. From province to province. In Amsterdam however, I feel quite comfortable and it is the only place I find rest.”

That is also where the atelier Demy works for is located. I love working in the atelier. “When I am in there I completely forget about the world and can focus exclusively on my creation.” FA S H I O N - I C O N “Winonah de Jong, is the fashion icon of the moment. She has a style of her own, that appeals to me. I would love to design a handbag for her. The handbag, that will be released around Christmas will suit her to a tee. It is a design which incorporates various materials such as leather , synthetic materials and metal. AMSTERDAM:

Haarlemmerdijk Annet’s favourites

The Haarlemmerdijk is the street situated between the Haarlemmerplein and the Korte Prinsengracht. It is one of my favourite shopping streets especially for the daily groceries. Great stores, nice people, that is all I need to avoid the busy shopping streets downtown. F l o r a i n e ’s B l o e m e n – Haarlemmerplein Across the entrance of supermarket Albert Heijn there is this small flower shop. The owner is always willing to help the customer make the right choice. Many regular customers live in the neighbourhood. Besides buying fresh flowers they often visit the shop for some small talk.

Louis Maximilian – Haarlemmerdijk 156 The very stylish clothing store opened its doors in 2011. All brands are selected with care and are not too much outspoken, but differentiate themselves in a sophisticated way. With fashion labels such as Roberto Collina, Closed, Zoe Karssen, Folk and Daniele Alessandrini the collections are always timeless and of good quality. A must visit when you are in Amsterdam.

M a d B a k e r ’s S h o p – Haarlemmerdijk 97 Here you can literally buy everything you need to bake and decorate the most delicious and beautiful cakes, pies, muffins and other pastries. If you are not into baking, you will be after visiting this store. So many things to choose from, so many colourful ingredients and so many books that will inspire you becoming a princess in the kitchen. The Movies – Haarlemmerdijk 161 Everybody in Amsterdam knows The Movies, the oldest cinema in the city with a wonderful art déco interior. Have dinner in their restaurant and see a movie in one of the four rooms afterwards and experience a lovely night out in a cosy atmosphere.

Elisabeth Tuythof Already within a year after her starting as an artist Elisabeth got an opportunity to exhibit her work in Gallery Donkersloot in Amsterdam. And she was the only female artist participating in The Night Watch Project in 2009. In this project several artists could give their own interpretation of Rembrandt’s Night Watch. It became her most special project so far. C R E AT I V I T Y Born in Lebanon, as a daughter of a Dutch father and a Lebanes mother Elisabeth grew up in Iran, Lebanon and The Netherlands. She was never in some kind of art academy. With her grandmother being a hat designer and and and uncle who was a writer and poet, creativity was always nearby en was to be seen in all kinds of ways in the surroundings Elisabeth grew up in. “ When I was young I took Drama classes and performed at home in front of family and friends. I was 16 years old when I was offered a scholarship for the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, but I was far too young to live in London on my own. So I made a decision and went to the fashion academy, but after 10 years working in the fashion industry I found that wasn’t the way I could express my creativity. I went travelling, working and living in several countries throughout the world.” Her three children are creative as well. They have all find their own way now. One is working hard being a master chef, the other one is into drawing and painting after he comes home from work and my youngest child is still searching, but we all know ze is born an actress.”

young Elisabeth was already familiar with different cultures and different people which has had influenced her later works. All this had an important influence on her later work. But the work of the Dutch master Vermeer has been a great inspiration as well. “In my opinion Vermeer the master of light. I cannot mention any other artist who can show me the light in a painting like he can.” But also Frida Khalo inspires her. “Especially where it comes to women surviving in a men’s world and achieve great successes, whatever misery crosses your path in life.” MO ST WON DE R F U L COMPLIMENT “That I can express the soul, that my work brings emotion to life, that I bring death to life. That is the definitely the best compliment ever I have received.” SPE C IA L P ORT R A I T Elisabeth paints a lot of portraits, of men as well as women. But the portraits that mean the most to her are the ones she made of her mother. “Those four portraits are so dear to me, I will never ever sell them.”

INFLUENCES Her father’s job made the family move from one country to another. Therefore 5 H O U R S O F F. A . M . E . 3 5

Dennis Buist Dennis Buist is half Israeli, half Palestinian and originally born in Jerusalem. After being adopted by a Dutch couple, he moved to live in Apeldoorn on the Dutch “Veluwe”. Now living in Amsterdam for nine years, he has become a top model, owner of a company that is specialized in personal development and communication, and co-owner of the Modelmakers. BUSY In my daily life I am a model and I’m founder of a business that is specialized in personal development and communication. I basically train and coach people on personal and corporate level. The people I train on personal level, I guide them how “to choose”. We are living in era where so many things are possible that people sometimes have the tendency to loose track on what they really want and who they really are. I guide and coach these people to discover that hidden part of them so they can start doing what they choose for. Another area I’m focusing on is productivity. I coach and guide people to recognize their routines that stops them of doing the work they really would like to do, or to boost their current productivity. We teach them how to change these unwanted routines into a productive process. On corporate level I coach creative entrepreneurs. From a sideline I watch them executing their passion and teach them how they can use the commercial side of business and how to use their authenticity instead of loosing it. With this background he founded The Modelmakers: a company specialized in workshops for young, aspiring models. During these workshops they focus on personal development; 5 H O U R S O F F. A . M . creating self-confidence and how to present yourself. S TA N D U P C O M E D Y Even though his agenda is often overloaded Dennis always knows how to create time for a very special hobby. “In my spare time I love to perform as a stand-up comedian. Besides the fact that it’s very funny, it is also a challenge for me. It is always the question if people like the jokes I make.” For a control freak like Dennis this indeed is a challenge. Luckily this has never stopped him from being on stage. I N S P I R AT I O N “People that statistically should end as a “loser”, or people with minor chances that eventually managed, despite their situation, to do what they want. It has inspired me to be like this myself.” U LT I M AT E G OA L As a small boy he always wanted to create his own city with his own rules so that people could live in peace with each other. “I still want the world to become a better place. That’s why I want to start an international company specialized in trainings. By inventing and executing many different trainings I want to help as much people as possible to increase their quality in live.”

Patrick Chappell Patrick Chappell, singer/songwriter, producer and saxophonist moved from Atlanta to The Netherlands years ago. There is one thing everyone who met Patrick must agree on. And that is his smile which reveals a set of white teeth what easily could make him the anchor man of a toothpaste brand. “If I had to describe myself in a few words it would be fun, happy, stylish, talented and blessed. My friends would probably say the same and with that friendly and approachable. And arrogant…. Just kidding, that’s only my girl saying that! Hahaha!” AT L A N TA V E R S U S U T R E C H T Although Atlanta has changed a lot, I still miss the food and the weather. But I do like living in Utrecht or being in The Netherlands in general because of the easy access to people and to other places, except for the ignorant racism, meaning Dutch people do racist shit not even realizing it is racist. Of many examples, I give you one: Zwarte Pete! It doesn ’t make me angry but I still feel it is a shame. T R AV E L L I N G A R O U N D T H E W O R L D The first time Patrick arrived at Schiphol Airport he was quite young. “I know I still look young but anyway, very young and we will leave at that”, he said with a big smile on his face. “I thought, I know seven Dutch people, I like three, but I do like this airport. For sure one of the better ones in Europe.” Performing throughout the world Patrick has already seen a lot. One trip he will never forget. “Russia… it was the first time I felt like a celebrity and the kind of love I felt from the ladies I would imagine would be in every man’s dream! I will say no more….” The best club he has ever performed was Plush, a club in Durban South Africa. Such love for what I do an how I do it, I had never experienced before. The crowd was great and new and sang every word of the song I’m your friend and pushed to perform it again back to back. That was amazing! If there would be any trip on his bucket list it would be a South European island for a long summer weekend. Just to relax and enjoy life. “Life is what you make it!”

Rachel Steendam Rachel Steendam, founder and owner of online fashion platform Project Style Hunter, is a true entrepreneur but definitely also an enjoyer of life who gets strength out of the beautiful things that life has to offer.

A S A F I S H I N T H E WAT E R Rachel is no newcomer to the fashion industry. During her Retail studies, she worked in little boutiques where she decorated the store and created outfits with a thorough passion. She really got started when she got a sales position. From the selling of collections and working the market to the gaining of customers throughout the whole country, her tasks were very diverse and Rachel felt like a fish in the water. “Being busy with collections, the gaining of new customers, all those different beautiful products and especially the trading of products is what made me truly happy.” During her travels to different cities and countries she came across many beautiful items. “I thought: I have to show this to other people.” And so the idea to take her treasures with her back to the Netherlands and putting them on an online platform was created. “Being able to do my trade from that platform, dealing with the items I come across, the contact with the people from all these different countries.. There is so much beautiful stuff happening, like for example new collaboration that are created with other creatives.” PROJECT STYLE HUNTER Even though Rachel still works as a freelance sales agent, there is noting better than having your own company. “It brings you more energy and strength when you are able to give something your own spin.

It really gives gratification. The website is still at its beginning and can still go many different directions, but the passion will steer it in the right way.” BEACH “The beach gives peace of mind and silence, a break in the midst of all the busy thoughts. The whole setting including the sea, gives a complete feeling of peace. The sounds of the sea have a hypnotizing effect on me. When abroad I love going to Koh Phanang, Thailand. It’s my favorite island. The beach near Srithanu is wonderful. When the boat nears the island, I get a feeling of serene peacefulness, positivity and total discharge.” Rachel discovered the island together with her boyfriend Boye and it gives the both of them a feeling of happyness and peace. “There is nothing better than being at the beach together, watching the beautiful orange-pinkish glow that comes with the sunset. That magical feeling is indescribable.” U LT I M AT E L I F E G OA L “Life happenings make a person go from left to right. I want to take life as it is and be open to all the lessons in life and grow from there. Be an honest person with values and standards and be thankful for everything that comes. And being able to leave life as a proud and righteous person. That is my goal.”

Wenda Oudshoorn With her brown “blockbox” she used to go out as a child to photograph practically anything her camera could catch. However, her dream was to become a dancer and this is what she became. The passion for photography eventually never died as after the birth of her, now 11-year-old twins, Wenda Oudshoorn picked up her camera again and since 2010 she is proud owner of Eye-D Photography. CHILDREN Her two children Joshua and Dante share her passion for the camera and love to photograph with the professional camera. “ I am sometimes amazed about the results. It is very funny to see how they manage to put their own creativity in their photos, sometimes in a manner that makes me thing like: ‘wow, you really captured this right ’! But until now they still want to become writer and gamedesigner.” Wenda herself also grew up in a family where there was lots of space for creativity. “Music, dance and art played a major role at home. Despite the fact that my parents never had creative professions themselves, they always supported us in our choices and gave my brother and me the freedom to choose a creative direction.” ANOUK Wendy enjoys the most working with nice, inspiring people that are as enthusiastic as she is in order to create a top result. “I would love to have Anouk in front of my camera one day. She is very photogenic, has a strong personality and a great sense of humor. This combination makes her in my opinion a great person.” N E W- Z E A L A N D “On this planet there are so many beautiful 5 H O U R S O F F. A . M . E . 4 2

places. Cities like Florence bad New York are great cities to photograph. However the most photogenic place for me is New Zealand. If you look at the amazing sceneries and landscapes of this country, I would love to photograph these.” I N S P I R AT I O N Not only beautiful spots are for her a source of inspiration. Also photographers and artists with their own specific styles can be an example for her. “One works with a certain kind of light that inspires me, another has, for example, a special way to use colors, or brings a special feel into a visual. Lately I had the honor to meet the Canadian photographer/image editor during one of her master classes. She not only inspired me with her specific way of working, but also because with her whole story and passion for her profession.” E N JOY L I F E TO T H E F U L L E ST “Keep on growing and learning. To be there for the people around me and to be able to be useful for them. To give as much as love to my children and to give them positive luggage to be able to be strong and respectful when discovering the world. To get the max out of my work. And to enjoy life to the fullest!”

Crabe Design – Different eyes, same vision

Odilon Ngonda Artist and designer Odilon Ngonda and architect and designer Simon Matusiak met at Creapole in Paris, where they both studied Design, back in 2006. Now, eight years later, they launch their first collection in women’s and men’s clothing, called ‘Vision’, at Five Hours of F.A.M.E. Odilon recently visited Amsterdam and there was not a place more perfect for a meeting than French restaurant Nacional Amsterdam. DESIGN SCHOOL “Our studies opened up new horizons and we started to see fashion as a form of art, accessible for all and a signifier of identity. Mixing minimalism, graphic cuts, curves and positive messages.” After graduating they founded Crabe Design, a total concept which contains fashion, art and interior design. Starting with art exhibitions in Paris, London and New York, they released their first t-shirt collection ‘Very Arty’. Now they have taken it to the next level with ‘Vision’. VISION “We once had a vision that we would design a full collection one day. And that time has come now. ‘Vision’ is a mix of architecture and fashion design. It is about the encounter of the complexity of graphic lines and the simplicity of the contemporary. The design reflects the vision of Crabe Design of creativity, in all kinds of ways, like architecture, design, art, fashion, but also ambition. It’s a blend of different fabrics or the mixture of different cultures.” FUTURE “In ten years we want to sell our products worldwide. By that time we have like twenty stores. We will be at every Fashion Week and own several interior design agencies. We have developed more artistic events and collaborate with other artists and designers.” CELEBRITIES “We would really like to see Pharrel Williams, Rihanna, Kate Moss, David Beckham and Neymar dressed in Crabe Design. Each of them is successful in their own field of business. Each of them is popular and passionate as well as defiant since they are able to differentiate themselves through their talents and their own vision of the world.”

Suheyla Sahil Her goal is to conquer Europe and after that the whole world with her fashion label The Orange House. Istanbul-based Fashion designer Suheyla Sahil is driven by dreams and goals and works hard to fullfill all of her wishes. MOTHER “When I was about four years old my mother often brought me to her studio where she designed clothes herself. I was fascinated by the way she combined the fabrics with the accessories in a dress. What I remember most is that her customers were always happy with her designs. At that age I knew that was what I wanted to be: a fashion designer. I have always looked up to my mother. She was and still is my role model, for sure.” P E R F E C T W O R K S PA C E Now at the age of 28 Suheyla has her own studio in Istanbul. “My current studio is filled with mannequins, fabrics, mirrors, a design table and machines. That’s great because everything I need is within a couple of metres, but there is only one big disadvantage: CHAOS! I would love to have a large space with a lot of daylight coming in, a coffee machine that makes delicious coffee and a space where I can relax and prevent myself from working 24 hours a day!” OLIVIER ROUSTEING In her spare time she visits dealers in fabrics and accessories to see what they have in stock. “I love to work with details and play with accessories and fabrics. That’s what I like about the designs of Olivier Rousteing, it has a lot of details. I would love to collaborate with him some 5 H O U R S O F F. A . M . E . 4 6

day, I think we would really complement each other.” FREEDOM “I am not obsessed with money, I am obsessed with freedom”. Her freedom means the world to Suheyla. She admits that money is a very important part of her life, but more than that is freedom. “Free to do what I want, you only live once so get the best out of it!” And that is what she is planning to do, step by step, taking it to the next level until the world knows Suheyla Sahil. “If you don’t have a dream, you don’t have a goal right?”

Sharon Alberg Sharon Alberg was always busy doing her own make up and soon everybody started asking her to do their make up or give them a beauty treatment. And the results were stunning. Nowadays her portfolio is filled with great assignments such as make up and hairstyling for fashion shows, videoclips, concerts and brides. She is the make up artist of 2011 Holland Got Talent’s winner Aliyah (who happens to be her niece) and collaboration partner of Five Hours of F.A.M.E. B E AU T Y But it was only till a couple of years ago Sharon definitley started a training to become a make up artist and hairstylist. Last year she graduated as a beautician as well. “I’m specialized in make up for dark skin. There are still too many light skinned and dark skinned women who need make up advice. As a beautician I can do even more for this target group and work with my hands. Working as a make up artist at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Amsterdam was a really great experience! And it’s always nice to bump into models I have worked with before.” B E YO N C É “If I could work with a celebrity it would be Beyoncé. It would be such a challenge doing her make up. She is so talented in many ways en she always looks gorgeous on stage and in videoclips. And even without make up she still looks beautiful!” S AT I S FA C T I O N “My passion is to make people even more pretty with my make up on and let them shine! Nothing gives me more satisfaction when I see a customer looking and feeling great after I have done my job. That really shows what you can achieve with make up.” FUTURE “In 10 years I will still work in the beauty business and hopefully I will have an international career as a make up artist. By then I will give workshops in make up styling and will train adults as well as teenagers in how to treat dark skin. I believe everyone has a specific talent and you should always get the most out of yourself, especially when you find out you have passion. Magic is believing in yourself. If you can do that, you can make anything happen.”

Jennifer van Tuyl is a woman on a mission. Her passion lies in doing things that sets off her energy in an environment devoid of resistance and insecurity. “Achieving your goal with power, commitment and vulnerability without damaging others.” She is the owner of art agency Urban Art House and hosted the Five Hour of F.A.M.E kickoff party on Sunday November 19th. I N DE PE N DE N T WOM A N Jennifer was born in Paramaribo, daughter of Dutch father and a British Guyanese mother. In order to translate her emotional live and expression, she wanted to attend a professional dance school. But it was not meant to be that way. She left school at 18 and find employment in variety of areas. “That allowed me to gather experience, got to know different business cultures and observe different management styles.” In the meantime as an independent entrepreneur she has set up several businesses such as Urban Art House and AdMingle, a Social Media Advertising Network. THE ESSENCE OF LIFE “I like discovering new worlds in travel, books, art, music and people. In search of the essence of my existence. In addition I find that conviviality an true interest know no bounds.” Her parents have taught her to treat others as you would like to be treated yourself. She is not the type who looks up to people but she can be inspired by others.”Not one person specifically but more the road they will have covered on the way to success.” W I SE WOR D S “Steve Jobs once said: ”your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life”. You choose your own path an life motto, wherever you come from. You can do more than you think – surrounded by the right people. But it all starts with you. The power of thinking and doing.” L I F E G OA L “Earn your living by doing what makes you happy is the ultimate goal. Other than that, simply be happy with what I have and cherish. Melvin Dorn Melvin Dorn, also known as Melcrun, MDORN or AkaMella , received a record player from his mother when he was a two year-old toddler and every Sunday he played soul records on their third floor attic apartment in The Pijp. Now he is working with mentally challenged youths who have been exposed to criminal justice, while he is in transition to becoming a music teacher. In addition, he is the founder and music producer of “Beat the Odds”. Music is his passion and his life, and that is a clear thing. I N F LU E N T IA L I D OL S As an adolescent he had no particular examples of idols. Although he was impressed by rapper Rakim and soccerplayer Gerald van Vanenburg, both lost their mysticism when he met them in person as they turned out to be regular people as well. “Maybe this is because I am not a person that is star struck, more likely the opposite” he claims. My mother has always been, and still is, the example of a driving force for him in her role of father and mother, raising him and his little sister by herself. He has a lot of respect for her. THE LOVES OF MY LIFE Besides the love for his music and his mother, Melvin thrives on the love of his wife. “She is the love of my life, she inspires me and keeps me well grounded, he says. They have two wonderful kids together and this represents his tower of strength. He likes to spend most of his leisure time with his family, but also with Krav Maga, playing soccer with a group of friends and his most favorite activity, which is making popcorn! My ideal work environment is even better organized and precise. I like to be surrounded by the right equipment, visuals and talented people who are essential to realizing my future plans. THE FUTURE One of the plans can surely be achieved without this ideal working space. Specifically, I would like to have a cooperation between people that represent Rapucation ( a new educational method within elementary and secondary education setting) whereby we can coordinate our strengths in creating a product and/or craft based on combining of education and music) T H E U LT I M AT E G OA L Independence. That is the ultimate goal. Independence in the widest sense of the word, with a combination of Luck and Health. This, while enjoying some popcorn of course!

Robin Feenstra I’m in an emotional roller coaster, therefore I express myself - Typhoon As a young girl upcoming singing talent Robin Feenstra was already fascinated by soul and jazz and it always remained. She was convinced that she would have a career in the music business. Being a student at the Art and Entertainment College in Amsterdam while working hard on her singing and performance skills, she proves she has chosen the right path towards the musical career she has ever wanted. Recently I decided to take the next step to performing live on stage and making live music. “ Robin would like to work with people who have reached their goals in music and people who are busy trying. It is all about lessons in life and my personal development concerning the music business. OPEN MINDED She gets inspiration from the most weird angles. “Sometimes I see an image and or I hear a jingle what brings me to ideas. I am very open minded so almost everything can inspire me. “ In her spare time she wants to give her 5 H O U R S O F F. A . M . E . 5 6

musical spirit peace and she encourages it as little as possible. “So I can recharge and absorb new inspiration. What I do then? Just chilling and watching a lot of movies and series. “ S E L F - A C C E P TA N C E “I am a Scorpio and I experience almost everything in a very intense way. I’ve always been an introvert person and the point is that I do need to express myself. As a creative person, it is important to accept yourself and the way you express yourself, otherwise you will never be able stand behind yourself. I don’t really have that “work hard play hard” attitude.” THINKING BIG “How big I’m going to become will depend on the choices I will make in the future. As long as I’m happy in what I do and I will do everything to get the best out of myself. But I can assure you one thing, I don’t think small...... “
