The village neighborhood of Five Points originated 100 years ago in 1915, when the city of Columbia cleared Rocky Branch Creek due to an outbreak of malaria. At the time, Five Points was merely taking shape, with just a few streets and intersections. Now, in 2015 – 100 years later – Five Points is home to nearly 150 retail, hospitality and service businesses, and the Five Points Association hosts twelve annual community events in the neighborhood. As part of its Centennial festivities, Five Points is celebrating our vibrant arts culture with the Paint 5 Points local art initiative, featuring ten of the Midlands most established visual artists. Each artist has created a piece or collection of pieces that represent Columbia’s original village neighborhood.

In 2005 during the inaugural Paint 5 Points exhibition, Dr. Bradford R. Collins noted, “A successful arts scene requires three factors: artists, collectors and arts facilitators. The absence of any of these ingredients is fatal.” It is our mission to ensure that Five Points continues to flourish and support a successful arts scene, and we thank you – as collectors – for helping us to do so.

1978 marked my arrival in Columbia, and the name ‘Five Points’ resonated as a crossroads of rail, commerce, and culture. It still does.

STATEMENT ON FIVE POINTS
Some decades ago, pre-glorification, I lived in the Five Points area on Blossom St. – close by the railway bridge – when I was a student. I still have a lot of nostalgia for the Five Points of that era. My painting is based on seeing a view over Five Points as I walked up Greene St. on a fall day with the low sun casting beautiful shadows on an otherwise unspectacular side of a building.

Dodd also enjoys doing reproductions of damaged works and sharing the owners’ appreciation of the reborn work on canvas. The main sources of inspiration for her artwork come from traveling, sightseeing and photographs. Dodd is a commissioned artist creating oil, acrylic, pastel, charcoal and pencil portraits, caricatures and landscapes.  BIO

The twilight moment is the start of daily excitement and the continuance of the dining, shopping and entertaining experiences that Five Points offers. My painting is based on a large-scale acrylic painting done by my husband, Colin, with some added details. It illustrates my favorite wide-angle view of Five Points.

STATEMENT ON FIVE POINTS
For more than 30 of the 37 years I have resided in Columbia, I have lived within a mile of the Five Points area. In my restless youth, I was a frequent attendee of shows at Rockafellas and Greenstreets. I find when I walk down the streets of Five Points, as elsewhere, I tend to notice the architectural details that have to do with the mechanical functioning of things; the exposed plumbing and electrical apparatuses. These elements stand in for a part of what businesses everywhere call overhead, which is what I have chosen as the title for the piece.

STATEMENT ON FIVE POINTS
The Five Points neighborhood is where I spent the earliest years of my childhood, so it literally is home. I lived on Congaree Ave., less than a block away from where my studio is now at 2065 Blossom. I’ve moved away from the neighborhood several times but have always come back. I’ve been back living and working here for 25 years now.

STATEMENT ON FIVE POINTS
Most of us do silly, crazy things in our youth, but usually we are lucky – maybe that’s because of organizations like the Five Points Association working hard to keep a fun neighborhood safe and beautiful. When I think of Five Points, I think of the pavement, the five streets coming together and keeping the area safe for even more fun.

Laurie McIntosh BORN
Greenville, SC
BFA, University of South Carolina; Studied at Penland School of Crafts and Center for Creative Imaging EDUCATED
Laurie McIntosh took several months in 2009-10 to explore the process of batiks. In many of these batiks, she revisited subject matter from previous work, finding new ways to express old ideas through varied line and color saturation. McIntosh then moved on to a new series in oil pastel, dealing with unspoken communication and the expressive relationships of single iconic figures by using layers of color, texture and minimal line. In September, 2012, she completed “All the In Between; My Story of Agnes,” a work that combines 74 panels telling the cradle-to-grave story of one life well lived. After finishing this hugely subjective undertaking, McIntosh chose to explore some of the techniques of layering and mark making that she discovered during the execution of “All the In Between; My Story of Agnes.” BIO

The small village atmosphere and its multigenerational makeup are what have always drawn me to the Five Points area. For 15 years, I ran my business and studio from above the corner of Harden and Blossom. The people I met during this time still remain lifelong friends. My painting, “Saluda Brunch,” depicts a typical, warm day on Saluda Avenue with people of all walks and ages working and gathering for shopping and dining.

STATEMENT ON FIVE POINTS
My connection to Five Points is one that continues to unfold for me as a painter. One of the most important aspects for me in my artistic practice is the emphasis on process over product. I think Five Points is like that. There seems to be an emphasis on people and relationships, rather than what they consume. In a sense, it is its own community. I have been painting, and getting my coffee in the Five Points area now a number of years, and still I am greeted by the familiar faces that help make this place become a place of belonging. I like to think that works its way into the paintings.

Blue Sky BORN
Columbia, SC
BA, Art and Education, University of South Carolina; MA, Art and Education, University of South Carolina EDUCATED
It is easy to discern the immense influence Blue Sky has had on the direction of art in the South, and – with the continuous publication of his murals – the world. Sky spent his life making heroic scale trompe l’oeil art for the public to enjoy, gathering a widespread appreciation and recognition of art in general when most had abandoned this premise. 2015 marks the 40th anniversary of Blue Sky’s renowned fine art mural “Tunnelvision” on Columbia’s Taylor Street; over the years, it has garnered a tremendous amount of worldwide attention. Sky lived in NY for a year in the mid 1960s but found the steamy South to be his true muse, where he creates his lush, atmospheric easel paintings. In 1978, GSA commissioned him for a federal building mural and the rendition is in the Smithsonian. Since the 60s, countless have purchased his works to include the Mississippi Museum, S.C. State Museum, Florence Museum, Two Federal Reserve Banks, IBM, Price Waterhouse, & Bank of America. His work is in art history books in Germany, Sweden, Italy, Amsterdam, Belgium and Greece. BIO
STATEMENT ON FIVE POINTS
I was born on Harden St. near Five Points. We roamed freely back then and usually ended up in Five Points. You see, Five Points used to be a swampy marsh, which bordered the stream we now call Maxcy Gregg Creek. Back then, you could eat lunch at the Econo Drug Store on Harden St. for seventy-nine cents. Sometimes we would go there after going to the Five Points Theatre; it was there in the 60s that I saw the Russian version of “War and Peace.” It was over seven hours in length, all with subtitles. I could tell you more stories, but I’m stopping here.

Edward Wimberly BORN
St. Matthews, SC
EDUCATED
BFA, Atlanta School of Art; MFA, Clemson University
Edward Wimberly lives in St. Matthews SC, the town where he was born. He used to live in the house where his father was born, but, like his grandfather, he gave it up when the children began to pile up. It surprises no one that a man so stuck in the mud should paint portraits. Unfortunately, for he paints excellent portraits, he does not paint many of them, but fritters away most of his time painting pictures of overstuffed chairs enduring hallucinations, or refrigerators in ecstasy or the fraught relationships of Raggedy Ann and Mickey Mouse. Before becoming embroiled in the pity and majesty of art, Edward was, for a time, a principal in what was once a Five Points institution – the Joyful Alternative. It once stood where Starbucks is now, and was before that (in the days when he was involved), across Greene Street. He painted the sign for the store in both locations. BIO
STATEMENT ON FIVE POINTS
You could say that if there was any one place I became an artist, it was in Five Points. Certainly, that’s where I learned that there is more to movies than action; and that there is more to food than eating. It was in Five Points that it first occurred to me that life could be more interesting than the path that seemed to stretch on from school. I remember how beautiful the weather was in 1969.
