GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENT Grant Suderman
Dear Members,
Temperatures have consistently been above 80 in recent weeks as summer has officially welcomed itself to Kansas City This summer heat also brings summer stresses to turfgrass #15 green has historically struggled to provide quality turf during hot, humid and stagnant weather conditions. To combat the decline of #15 green two Turfbreeze fans will be temporarily installed for the summer months.
Limited air movement is one of the major contributing factors to summer bentgrass decline More than 30 years of research and field observations have demonstrated that fans are a successful tool to improve air circulation and sustain turfgrass quality of bentgrass putting greens in summer months. The air movement provided by the fans reduces surface and soil temperatures while aiding in moisture control. When soil temperatures rise above 86°F bentgrass has a net energy loss, this causes a reduction in root and shoot growth On a sunny 90°F day, the surface temperature of a green can be 105° Research shows that air movement (fans) can lower the surface temperatures 10 degrees and soil temperatures 6 degrees. Therefore, it is crucial to KEEP FANS ON during these hot months. Due to the success of the fans seen in the picture on #15 green, we are currently evaluating additional areas to install fans for improved conditions.
