consumption by improving the efficiency of the excavator. Second, it creates a smooth, spoil free ditch using just the excavator. This, in turn, lowers operating costs by requiring less labor. The semi-float position the valves is what accomplishes this flat bucketing process. The valves place equal pressure on the bucket through the booms on the top and bottom of the cylinder. This softens the boom, gives the operator greater control over motions and allows the bucket to make corrections necessary to maintain the right grade without the need to fight the weight of the machine. Yet the flat bucketing process is not the only benefit of the IDigBest system. This non-GPS digging system has an accurate measurement system that alerts the operator to the depth and position of the bucket and teeth with a simple LED light strip directly on the bucket. This streamlines operation and makes it easy for the operator to see what is happening, without the need to follow complicated on-screen controls. The flat boom and measurement of the IDigBest main system is just the first offering from Excavation Solutions, LLC. The IDigBest family also offers an innovative X-RAY VISION system. This system targets dangerous underground utilities and allows the operator to outline a safety zone around those utilities. Then, when the digging process reaches that safety zone, it sounds a tone to alert the operator. It also has a kill switch that will prevent contact by shutting down the joysticks if the safety zone is breached. When measuring is not important, IDigBest offers the IDigBest Degrees system, which gives the operator much control through a foot pedal, without the need for measuring. This system can stand alone or be incorporated to an existing dig system to allow greater control. When used with the IDigBest system, it allows for greater control over the flat bucketing process.

Greater control for excavators with IDigBest Excavation Solutions, LLC, recently announced the release of IDigBest family of dig systems. This release will greatly improve the operation, function and performance of excavators, advancing the contraction industry. The system, which was created by excavators for excavators, streamlines the digging process and makes it more effective and efficient. The IDigBest system is compatible with any GPS enabled excavator machine. The system gives the operator greater machine control, so flat bucketing is now possible. This is achieved through a patented valve system that allows the main boom to enter a semi-float state. This allows the bucket to sit flat on grade, putting the teeth in the optimal position to cut the earth without undue fuel use.
The savings with the IDigBest systems are the primary benefit. Operators can achieve accurate measurements, smooth grades and spoil-free ditches with one simple system. This efficiency saves those who implement the system substantial amounts of money, and makes IDigBest a solid investment.
The system offers users several benefits. First, it cuts fuel

nwhat’s new JCB’S new optional automatic heater system warms backhoe cabs and engines before operators arrive for work New system helps operators start their daily shifts faster for greater productivity.
The heater system is much more than simply a comfort option, however. It also removes the requirement for an engine block heater in colder climates and extends engine life by reducing engine cold starts. As the heater runs off the machine’s own fuel supply, there is no need for additional tanks or storage. There is also no need for an external power supply as with an electric block heating system, so the machine can be left in remote areas overnight. For more information, visit www.jcb.com.
JCB backhoe operators are in for some heart-warming news: The company has made a new heater system available on its iconic backhoe loaders that automatically heats the cab and engine before the operator arrives for work in the morning. The device means the machine now takes much less time to reach operating temperature in cold weather and is ready to start its daily shift much faster, boosting productivity for owners and operators. “This is another fantastic innovation on JCB’s backhoe loaders that will allow operators to simply get in and drive without having to defrost windshields or warm up the engine,” said Tim Burnhope, JCB’s chief innovation and growth officer. “As well as providing greater operator comfort, the new system will cut downtime and boost productivity.” Available as an option on JCB’s 3CX and 4CX backhoe loaders, the system can be activated using a 24-hour timer with up to three pre-set start times or manually through a switch in the cab. The heater can also be used manually throughout the day when the machine is not in use, maintaining a comfortable working environment. It works by using a water heater that is integrated into the engine’s coolant circuit. The water heater unit automatically runs a safety check before heating, prior to starting an integrated diesel-fueled burner. Atomized fuel is sprayed into the combustion chamber and ignited with a high-tension spark. The hot combustion gases flow through a heat exchanger, which transfers the heat to the engine coolant system. This thermal energy is forwarded to the cab through the machine’s ventilation outlets, with residual warmth remaining in the engine.

For comfortable operation, the brooms offer intuitive controls and seven-position handle height. The handlebars also fold for easy storage.
3M researchers developed Pressure Diffusion Temple Technology after completing a comprehensive study that examined different face shapes and sizes from around the world. The study identified approximately 600 different touch points on the human face that then guided the design and fit of protective eyewear lines. The key benefits of pressure diffusion temple technology are: a secure, comfortable fit; its ability to self-adjust to a wide array of head sizes which may ultimately reduce the need to stock multiple frame sizes; and reduced frame slippage during head movement. ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
As the heater is electronically and thermostatically controlled, it works intermittently, only burning for the amount of time required to reach the desired temperature. Furthermore it only consumes a 0.071-0.163 gallons of fuel per hour, making it a low-cost option. A self-diagnostic function ensures trouble-free operation.

nwhat’s new Rubber Supply Company adds undercarriage components to product lineup
When asked about this change, a company spokesperson said, "We are always looking for ways to lower the amount of time spent on a job while improving the accuracy of our machines. The front track on the CF 3000 does just that. Because many of our customers have poor subgrades to deal with, we felt that the upgrade to the CF 3000 was necessary to improve the user experience."
Rubber Supply Company specializes in tracks for compact loaders and mini-excavators of all types, but recently announced the addition of undercarriage components for rubber-tracked machines to their product lineup as part of an ongoing effort to add new products. When tracks and other parts on rubber tracked machines need to be replaced, today's companies turn to Rubber Supply Company. Rubber tracks are the primary product offered by Rubber Supply Company, which has been in business for over 18 years. They stock standard black, non-marking white, turffriendly tread and non-metal core tracks. The widths range from 180mm to 500mm, with new sizes and types added regularly. The company stocks many different styles and tracks to fit crawler machines of most types, which helps cut down on shipping times. When asked abut what sets Rubber Supply Company apart from other companies offering similar products, a company spokesperson said, "First, it is our commitment to provide quality products to our customers at reasonable prices. Then, we go above and beyond offering excellent service, and each customer gets personal, prompt attention." To better serve their customers, Rubber Supply Company has recently added undercarriage components for rubber-tracked machines to their product lineup. to be quicker than ever before, allowing commercial highway and street projects to now utilize the imprinting option. By adding Noble Coat Products to its offerings, Quick Imprints has created an all-in-one system. The Noble Coat Products offer a solvent borne translucent sealer that cures, seals, colors and marbleizes all in the same day that the concrete is poured. This creates a protective membrane over the new floor that prevents problems from foot traffic, dust and equipment. Noble Coat is resoluble, so the application of additional coats is simple. When asked about Noble Coat, a Quick Imprint spokesperson indicated the strategy behind the company's pricing of the material. "We are pricing Noble Coat at a cost comparison to receive a minimum of three coats for each project. This creates lasting protection for both interior and exterior concrete. The final coat can be applied at project completion to fill any crevices or cracks that occur throughout the construction process, creating a flawless final finish." "This," he continued, "means the project can be done in half the time and with half the cost of most floorings. Many of our customers find that the cost for a noble coat stained floor is a full third of the cost of standard stained projects because of the lower cost and the timely installation."

n product & equipment spotlight Portable Pitbull™ 2300 Screening Plant features redesigned conveyor, increased output, electric option
is reduced. Upon arrival, users can quickly and easily lower the unit to operating position with the hydraulic system, which eliminates pressure on the axle, tires or wheels during screening. The hydraulic system raises the machine back to towing position with the flip of a lever. The machine also features heavy-duty suspension, electric breaks and trailer lights for safe and legal travel.
The rugged Pitbull 2300 Screening Plant manufactured by Lake Erie Portable Screeners gives landscapers, contractors and municipalities a compact and portable machine that delivers maximum efficiency and high outputs with a wide range of materials such as topsoil, mulch, gravel and asphalt. It is available in both diesel and electric-powered models. Lake Erie Portable Screeners developed the Pitbull 2300 with simple operation, maintenance and transport in mind. The machine incorporates several unique features, such as full hydraulic operation, tubular frame construction, a Torflex axle and a reversible shaker, that set it apart for mid-size screening projects. The company manufactures Pitbull 2300 frames with highquality, structural tube steel. The tubular construction reduces noise and vibration, which in turn minimizes the risk of cracks and structural failures that are common in machines with C-channel construction. The screening plant incorporates heavy-duty materials throughout, all the stress points are fully gusseted, and both attachment points and stress points are 100 percent welded with high-strength steel. The result is a machine with a curb weight of 13,440 pounds. The Pitbull 2300’s 20-foot-long stacking conveyor adjusts hydraulically from heights of 6 feet, 8 inches up to 13 feet to feed material directly into a tri-axle or dump truck. This allows users to create larger stockpiles, which increases efficiency by reducing the number of times equipment needs to be moved. These attributes, combined with the ability to place the machine at the point of excavation, minimize spillage and dramatically reduce cycle times and haulage costs typically associated with loading and unloading material when using stationary plants. With the machine’s legal width of 8 feet, 4½ inches and either a standard pintle hitch or optional gooseneck towing package, the Pitbull 2300 is easy to move from site to site, as well. A 10K Torflex axle with oil bath hubs provides a cushioning effect so the unit tows smoothly and stress to the tow vehicle
The screening plant is equipped with a loading apron that accepts up to three yards of material at a time and up to five yards at a time with a slower dump speed. With its low dump height of 8 feet, 4½ inches, users do not need loading ramps; they can fill the hopper using typical construction equipment like skid steers, backhoes, loaders or excavators. The portable screening plant also includes an upper and lower screening deck, each with more than 41 square feet of screening area. The upper and lower decks are equipped with two sections of screening media on each deck. The company offers optional punch plate or finger decks for the top deck in addition to a wide range of screen sizes for processing all types of materials. Operators can quickly and easily change screens by loosening tension bolts that hold each one in place. The screeners also can be equipped with optional upper and lower discharge chutes to allow for up to three different sizes of screened materials.
Blastcrete Gunite attachment adds convenience, maneuverability for range of projects Blastcrete Equipment Company’s H-020 gunite attachment gives shotcrete contractors a powerful rotary gunite machine that attaches easily to any skid steer, requires less compressed air, and saves space on jobsites. The easy-to-operate machine delivers precise material control for projects including concrete repair, soil stabilization and refractory lining applications. The hydraulically powered H-020 is equipped with Blastcrete’s “Genuine Piccola” single point, self-leveling clamping system that ensures simple operation and minimal maintenance. The unit is equipped with a universal mounting plate for attachment to skid steers. It also features pockets so users can transport it with a forklift. While other dry-process, shotcrete gunning systems typically require three to four adjustment bolts to seal the rotor section, the H-020 requires just one. The simplified design makes it quick and easy to adjust, clean, and ensures safe, trouble-free operation.
In addition to the adjustable stacking conveyor, the Pitbull 2300 features a hydraulically driven transfer conveyor that moves screened material from the hopper to the stacking conveyor. Hydraulic motors on the conveyors provide continuous flow of power to achieve production rates up to 100 yards per hour of clean, saleable material. Because the conveyors are hydraulic rather than chain- or belt-driven like many competing models, the Pitbull 2300 eliminates the risk of power loss and downtime due to broken chains or belts. The unit’s power plant is equipped with a reliable 47-horsepower Yanmar diesel engine that complies with 2008 EPA Tier 4 and EU Stage IIIA emissions standards. The engine compartment features large doors at the top and bottom that open wide for easy maintenance and repair access. The company also offers a 60 horsepower, 480-volt AC electrical package for applications in confined or enclosed spaces like tunnels, mines and indoor projects. The H-020 requires a skid steer or other hydraulic power supply to deliver 10 GPM at 1,500 psi to operate at maximum speed. Since the system uses hydraulics to rotate the rotor section, the H-020 requires just 225 CFM of compressed air, which is 50 percent less than comparable, fully pneumatic gunite machines. It operates with variable speeds from 0-5 cubic yards per hour and can be used with delivery systems that exceed 500 feet. The H-020 is 34 inches wide, 34 inches long and 50 inches tall. The unit’s size makes it easy to move, and it takes up less space on the jobsite. The machine also can be loaded into the back of a pickup truck for easy transport. n product & equipment spotlight Helix eliminates the need for rebar in concrete applications
of filling sand bags. A company spokesperson indicated the need for this product, "Within 24 hours, the SandMaster can deploy up to 18,000 sandbags directly to the area of need. The brutal job and logistical nightmare of sandbagging operations is finally over."
Helix Micro Rebar has revolutionized the construction industry. This product replaces standard rebar rods and welded wire mesh. Helix Micro Rebar consists of wire filaments created out of recycled American steel. These filaments are electroplated with zinc, making them rust resistant, and then they are twisted and cut to the required length. The result is multi-directional reinforcement, which means no more need to create a continuous grid.
With the SandMaster, sandbags can be filled at a different location and then transported to the area of need. They can also be filled at the area of need because of the mobile design of he SandMaster. This helps eliminate much of the cost of transportation during sandbagging operations. While sandbags are the most common use of the SandMaster, it can also be used for bagging rock, dirt, gravel and other similar materials. Also, it can use both wet and dry materials.
Helix Micro Rebar was created for the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers to work in blast resistant applications. Rebar did not work for these because it was not strong enough and was too cumbersome. Today, Helix has been used to build everything from roads to airports around the world. One of the ways Helix helps construction companies save is by lowering labor costs. Rather than laying a grid and setting up rebar, simply add the Helix to the concrete and pour for a strong, corrosion-resistant material. Because the material is mixed throughout the concrete, Helix will not create random cracks because of rebar running through control joints. It also eliminates failures caused by placement error or corrosion and limits the safety hazards associated with WWF and rebar replacement. Helix is also beneficial because it is eco-friendly. The product is made of 56 percent recycled content, which means using Helix contributes to a company's LEED certification. When asked about the product, a company spokesperson said, "Helix Micro Rebar, which has been approved for most concrete applications, can save up to 50 percent on the cost of pouring concrete. It makes the job safer, more efficient and more eco-friendly. That is a winning combination for today's construction firms." Helix has been approved for use in nearly all concrete construction applications, including bridges, pavements, walls, slabs, precast structures and foundations. It is tornado, hurricane and blast resistant. Eliminate radiant flooring hassles with Creatherm S20 Radiant Installation Panels Heated floor panels are popular with homeowner who no longer want to suffer from cold feet in the morning, yet the process of installing radiant floor panels is time consuming and not cost effective. Creatherm S20 Radiant Installation Panels have changed this by allowing for a simple to install radiant floor system that eliminates the need to tie, staple, clip or screw hydronic tubing to the substrate. When asked about the system, a Creatherm spokesperson said, "Our S20 Contractor floor panel features eight radial

snap-tight staggered grids. These create optimal tube spacing that allows the installer to run tubing at 45-degree angles with ease."
Sandbags are commonly used for flood control. They can also be helpful in pipeline construction, ballast, and erosion control and spill containment. Anywhere that the bagging of materials is required, the Sand Master is ready to help.
The patented design of the S20 Contractor floor panel can support both 1/2 and 5/8 inch PEX tubing. The panels are made from BASF Styropor and Neopor EPS to provide strength and excellent insulating properties. The overall design of the floor panels saves time and labor during installation. This, in turn, reduces costs. The preslotted channels allow uniform tube placement, which creates equal heat dispersion. It also increases safety by eliminating on-site trip hazards. "Creatherm's S20 Radiant Installation Panels have truly revolutionized the radiant flooring installation process," stated the spokesperson. "It benefits both the contractor and the property owner, making it the ideal choice for this project."

Make sandbagging easier with the SandMaster Filling sandbags is a grueling, labor-intensive task, but with the SandMaster, that task is made much simpler. The SandMaster is the only machine in the construction industry that handles the task of filling, closing, transporting and placing sandbags. With the SandMaster, flood prevention becomes much easier and far less tedious. The SandMaster only needs three people and a skid steer. The machine has the capability of creating 4,800 to 6,200 filled sandbags in an eight-hour period. This drastically reduces response time for flood protection, while also limiting the amount of manpower necessary to fill the bags. This saves both time and money at a crucial time. The SandMaster, which is a product of Barrier Systems, LLC, attaches to skid steers and excavators, making quick work out

J D Neuhaus Hoists Help Build the Largest Observation Wheel in the World Three J D Neuhaus air operated hoists, each providing a 50 metric ton lifting capacity have been utilized in the construction of the world’s largest observation wheel located at The Linq, Caesars Entertainment’s $550 million outdoor retail, dining and entertainment district located in the heart of the Las Vegas Strip. The wheel, which tops out at a height of 550 feet, provides an impressive view for both daytime and nighttime skylines of this unique resort destination. The structure, known as the Las Vegas High Roller, comprises 28 viewing cabins with a total 1,120 passenger capacity. The impressive height exceeds other Great Wheels of the world such as the Singapore Flyer at 541 feet (28 cabins with 784 passenger capacity) and the UK’s London Eye at 443 feet (32 cabins with 800 passenger capacity). The air operated hoists were located at a temporary chain fall platform suspended below the wheel central hub, and utilized their 280 feet of cable fall to lift equipment from the ground level. These lifts included 18 temporary radial struts, each being 40 tons in weight, together with transfer trusses of similar weights and all the individual outer rim segments of the completed wheel, together with a total of 112 cable locking assemblies initially assembled at 50 percent tension loads. The temporary radial struts were installed to provide the accurate spacing of the individual wheel rim segments from the central hub unit during initial build assembly. These were then sequentially replaced by the cable locking assemblies, which when fully tensioned provided the radial spokes of the completed wheel assembly. The JDN hoists were selected from their rugged and compact Profi TI range which have a long established reputation for reliability, performance and durability. They operate from a six bar compressed air supply, with a total of 19 separate models in the range offering lift capacities from 0.25 metric ton up to an impressive 100 ton. They incorporate a patented vane motor-brake system for lowmaintenance operation with little wear. One hundred percent duty ratings with unlimited duty cycles are provided, with insensitivity to outdoor operations involving dust, humidity and temperatures ranging from -20°C to +70°C. Although a normal lift height of 10 feet is available with standard models, special lift requirements such as the 280 feet specified for the Las Vegas Observation Wheel was no problem. The impressive lifting and lowering speeds of these hoists, even under full load capacities, are coupled to sensitive, infinitely variable speed controls for the precise positioning of loads.
ABOVE: Construction of the rim of the Las Vegas High Roller observation wheel as it approached the half-way mark.
LEFT: The Las Vegas High Roller observation wheel under construction, showing the outer rim completed with final radial spokes to be added before removal of the temporary radial struts.
The wheel structure incorporates 3.5 million pounds of steel, with the 112 cables forming the tensioned spokes of the structure having a combined total length of 25,256 feet, with each cable having a breaking force of 550 tons. The individual viewing cabins incorporate dynamic video and music while their 300 square feet of glass will provide exciting, unparalleled views of the Las Vegas Strip, with an approximate 30 minutes undertaken for each revolution of the wheel structure, traveling at one foot per second.

Reducing Costly Delays in Mill and Fill Road Repair Innovative road paving technology is eliminating the milling cleaning bottleneck, expediting completion, cutting cost, and improving adhesion. Deadlines for road mill and fill projects have shortened to minimize public inconvenience but traditional technology to clean road millings has failed to keep pace. “On mill and fill jobs, we often can’t close a lane until 7:00 PM and need it open for traffic by 6:00 AM,” says Jack Shannon, Superintendent at Silver Star Construction. “Late penalties for interstate highway work can be as high as $10,000 an hour, so expediting the milling clean up process—our bottleneck— was vital.” Traditionally, after milling, vehicles such as road sweepers or skid steers with broom attachments remove milled debris from the road surface. However, these vehicles are not engineered to be efficient for this type of use.
Innovative road paving technology from Broce Broom is eliminating the milling and cleaning bottleneck, expediting completion, cutting cost, and improving adhesion.
A transfer sweeper can fill a 10 cubic yard truck with milling debris in under 15 minutes, and is up to three times as fast at sweeping up milling debris and loading it into the truck as skid steers and box blades.
In an effort to reduce costly stop-and-go road repair, innovative road paving technology is now eliminating the milling cleaning bottleneck, expediting completion, cutting cost, and improving adhesion for a growing number of pro-active road paving contractors. “We found a transfer sweeper can fill a 10 cubic yard truck with milling debris in under 15 minutes,” says Shannon. “It’s up to three times as fast at sweeping up milling debris and loading it into the truck as our previous skid steers and boxblade.” Previously, Silver Star Construction used two skid loaders with attached brooms and a boxblade front-end loader with a back loader bucket to pick up road milling debris to dump into a 10 cubic yard truck. According to Shannon, the operators of the three vehicles took about 30-45 minutes to fill the truck from the side with milling debris. “The vehicles took over a minute each maneuvering to dump debris in the truck before returning to clean the road surface and got in each other’s way,” explains Shannon. “Some jobsites only have about ten feet of roadway, but a skid steer or boxblade may require at least 14 feet of space to load the truck from the side.” After searching for a faster, more efficient process to clean up milling debris, Shannon turned to an MK-1 Transfer Sweeper by Broce Broom, a Norman, Okla.-based innovator of construction sweeping technology. Unlike typical road sweepers that must travel to dump their milling debris before cleaning again, the transfer sweeper drives behind a dump truck and integrates a large brush that continually sweeps debris to its conveyor, which dumps into the truck bed. According to Shannon, the transfer sweeper can keep up with the milling machine, and the only time it has to stop is to swap out a loaded truck for an empty one. [continued on next page]

and fill jobs early and often pave another 1,500 to 2,000 feet overnight,” says Shannon. “We win incentives for early completion. Compared to our previous cleaning method, we’re able to mill and fill the same mile stretch of highway about two hours faster, while eliminating the cost of two extra operators and pieces of equipment.” Before, due to wear and tear, the company was replacing the skid steers and box blade used to clean milling debris about every three years. So far the transfer sweeper has lasted about six years, and Shannon expects at least another six years of use before replacement is required. All the internal components of the transfer sweeper that come in contact with asphalt, gravel, and rock are heavy-duty steel, designed to withstand continual contact with harsh material. “With the transfer sweeper, we’ve saved several thousand dollars a week in equipment purchase, maintenance, operation, and labor costs, and achieved ROI in under a year,” says Shannon. “It has paid for itself many times since we’ve had it.” Compared to the company’s previous skid steers and boxblade, the transfer sweeper also cleans more thoroughly so tack sticks better to the road surface and not to road millings, according to Shannon.
Superior Industries, Inc., manufacturer of material handling systems and components, takes on big game hunting at ConExpo-Con/Agg 2014. Donning camouflage wear and orange vests, the Superior Industries team heads into the deep woods of Central Hall (Booth # 51838); and will brave the brand new Platinum Lot (Booth #7602) where equipment hunters will meet with sales and engineers atop the show’s largest deer stand. Leading the show’s fearless pack of hunters is North American hunting legend – Bullseye – who has achieved reality star infamy of late in a series of video blogs on the Superior Industries website at www.superior-ind.com. The 8-episode show preview series, featuring Bullseye and his BFF, Norm the Deer, guides equipment hunters as they track innovative material handling solutions behind every tree, while bagging the best value for the buck. Throughout the show, Bullseye and Norm will be greeting fellow equipment and component
hunters at both the indoor and outdoor booths. “And if you’re nice, I may even autograph your idlers,” says Bullseye. While visiting either Superior Industries booth, equipment hunters are invited to take a shot and test their skills at the Big Buck Video Arcade – a contest that will crown the three highest-scoring marksmen by the show’s end. Each winner will receive one of Bullseye’s specially-designed hunting trophies, and one of three grand prizes: First Place – a Weatherby VanGuard Series Rifle; Second Place – Leupold BX-4 McKinley HD Binoculars; and Third Place – a GoPro HERO3 Hunting Camera. Join the Superior Industries Big Game Hunt at ConExpo-Con/Agg in Las Vegas from March 4-8, 2014. For more information, call 800-321-1558 or visit www.superior-ind.com.
The need to maximize mill and fill productivity has even some of the longest established road construction companies looking for a way to keep up with the milling machine, such as Haskell Lemon Construction Co., a third generation family road paving business. “A lot of our mill and fill work needs to be performed in the same shift,” says Jay Lemon, President of Haskell Lemon. “This puts a premium on our ability to cut, clean, and fill the road surface to meet deadlines and avoid late penalties.” To expedite the company’s mill and fill roadwork, Lemon had sought to improve the efficiency of the company’s traditional road milling clean up process. “The minimal storage capacity of street sweepers and skid steers with broom attachments had limited the efficiency of our mill and fill work,” says Lemon. When Haskell Lemon chose a Broce transfer sweeper, it enabled the cleaning process to keep up with the milling machine so it does not need to stop, according to Lemon. The company modified a 14 cubic yard dump truck bed to accept debris, which provided significantly more storage capacity to keep the cleaning process going. “The transfer sweeper has eliminated clean-up from being the bottleneck of our operations, and is about 50 percent faster than our previous clean up process using street sweepers and skid steers,” says Lemon. “It has made sweeping debris from the road and loading it into a dump truck a two-man operation, increased our production, lowered our labor costs, and helped our competitive edge.” For more info, call 866-579-2488 or visit www.brocebroom. com.

App Developed That Automatically Calls for Help After a Heavy Equipment Rollover Accident Each year more than 400 people die from heavy equipment and agricultural tractor rollover accidents, according to the Bureau of Labor statistics. A researcher at the University of Missouri has finished an app that may save some of those lives. Called VRPETERS (Vehicle Rollover Prevention Education Training Emergency Reporting System), the app is a download to a smart phone or tablet. The app uses the sensors and GPS capability built into these mobile devices to detect a rollover, and then send an automatic emergency e-mail and phone message with accident location coordinates. The app was designed by A. Bulent Koc, assistant professor of Agricultural Systems Management at the College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources, and research assistant Bo Liu. Another version of the app consists of hardware installed onto the machine that detects upsets and sends out an emergency message. Data from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health suggests that one of every 10 equipment operators will overturn a machine in his or her lifetime. Koc said that many rollover accidents usually occur some distance from a road or residence, which means an accident can go undetected for hours. Having the emergency alert go out automatically is important if the operator is unconscious or pinned under the vehicle and can’t reach a cell phone. The automatic call and email for help are an important part of the system’s ability to save lives. Many farmers and heavy equipment operators think they can jump clear of a rollover, but that seldom works,
Koc said. Side over-turns can occur in just three-quarters of a second. Most people need a second or more to react to an event, once there is the realization of a problem. The app is designed to be used with dangerous vehicles including farm equipment, construction and mining vehicles, trucks, snowmobiles, military vehicles, riding lawnmowers and ATVs. The federal Consumer Products Safety Commission’s 2010 Annual Report of AllTerrain Vehicle (ATV)-Related Deaths and Injuries states that there were 726 deaths and an estimated 115,000 emergency room visits related to ATV accidents in 2010. Heavy equipment accidents include those involving bulldozers, backhoes, fork lifts, cranes and excavators. Koc said he and Liu wanted VRPETERS to be as simple and inexpensive as possible. Increasingly, he said, farmers are using their smart devices to monitor weather or calculate production inputs, already putting them in the cabs of farm machines. To minimize the number of false alarms, a VRPETERS-equipped smartphone is attached to the tractor, rather than left in a pocket. The app is designed to calculate the stability characteristics of the vehicle, and can provide a warning to the driver as the vehicles rollover point approaches.

New Screen Vibrators Deliver Efficiency & Design Freedom A world leader in engineered vibration for bulk material handling has introduced a new family of electric screen vibrators for regular duty and hazardous environments. Designed to deliver up to 16,500 pounds of centrifugal force for efficient material separation, Martin® Screen Vibrators are built specifically to withstand the rigors of industrial applications and continuous use, and can run 24/7 as needed. “With a traditional screen vibrator, the drive functions as the energy source,” explained Robert Nogaj, Martin Engineering Vice President of Operations and Product Management. “The energy is transferred via structural bridge to the vibratory box which is isolated by the springs. With our new design, the energy source is an integral part of the structural tube that can be mounted to the sides or top of a vibratory box, making it much easier for designers to engineer and manufacture new kinds of vibratory screens.” The new line of vibrators is designed and engineered in the USA and will be manufactured in most Martin Engineering facilities worldwide to facilitate short lead times and service response. Nogaj said that the designs are likely to find utility in high frequency vibratory screens, sizing equipment, dewatering operations and other vibratory equipment for the oil and gas industries, as well as processing of coal, iron ore, gold and other elements, silica sand, pharmaceuticals and even food applications.
“The new Martin® Screen Vibrator is our own design,” Nogaj continued. “We started with several models, some of them direct retrofits for the Derrick® Shaker. But our drives are fully adjustable, so the customer has more flexibility and creativity in how the vibrators are used. We’re now in the process of expanding the product line beyond the models engineered to retrofit OEM equipment, including a line of much larger drives,” he added. The new vibrators can be used with Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) in ordinary and hazardous atmospheres. Explosion-proof models are ETL / cETL / ATEX / IECex certified for hazardous duty. The versatile dual-voltage product line can be used anywhere in the world, and the eccentric weights can be adjusted with hand tools to match “High G” or standard performance screens. No adaptors are needed to fit Derrick Vibrating Screens, as these direct-replacement units can be bolted and wired to existing connections. Designed for low maintenance, the only service required is lubrication with a standard grease gun every 2,000 hours, and the long-life bearings produce less noise than OEM oil bath bearings. Martin® Screen Vibrators provide the power to sort or separate material efficiently, and the sturdy designs have been proven in demanding lab trials and field applications. The units are manufactured to the highest

Excuse #6: “I’ll get to it eventually.” In his book, Panaggio tells the story of a salesperson who did extensive research on each sales lead she got. Some of her research files contained more than a hundred printed pages of material. Her reasoning? She wanted to know as much as possible about a potential client before she called them. On the surface, this level of dedication sounds admirable. But according to Panaggio, the salesperson in question was really procrastinating in order to put off the moment of truth. She was afraid of being rejected after making

About the Author: Tom has enjoyed a 30-year entrepreneurial career as cofounder of two successful direct marketing companies. As a result, he can give a true perspective on starting and running a small business. His practical approach to business concepts and leadership is grounded in the belief that success is the result of a commitment to embracing risk as a way to ensure opportunity. In 1983 he cofounded Direct Mail Express (DME) in Daytona Beach, Florida, with his siblings Mike and Kathy. DME has always been on

Excuse #7: “I’m playing a defensive game.” The hardest risks for cash-strapped entrepreneurs to take are often financial. Many business owners choose to cut costs and (at least attempt to) do more with less when what they really need is to hire new talent, invest more heavily in marketing, upgrade their machinery, or something else. “Unfortunately for many owners, no business achieves greatness solely by pinching pennies – although financial responsibility is certainly a big part of sustainability and growth,” Panaggio comments. “The truth is, you can save your way to mediocrity, but not success. So don’t tell yourself that you’re playing the game if you never come off defense. Nobody ever wins without

tell yourself that things are fine, that the future is rosy, and that you don’t need to put yourself out there to improve,” observes Panaggio. “However, that kind of thinking is a good way to be left behind or to become irrelevant. Customers don’t always leave because they had a bad experience with your company…the reason is often that they simply had a better one with someone else. Remember, risks need to be taken when business is good and bad if you want to stay cutting-edge and competitive.”
