Curb Shapers,Inc. Curb Shaper Improves Ease of Laying Curb and Gutter When laying a sidewalk or driveway, contractors often struggle to lay a professional-looking curb and gutter formations. Laying it by hand is time consuming, and curb rolling tools are often cumbersome to use. Curb Shaper has made it simple to form curbs and gutters quickly and professionally. With the ability to allow for variations in form work, the Curb Shaper is a flexible piece of machinery that makes laying the curb simple. The machine is designed to create a 24-inch curb and gutter, but can be adjusted up to 2-1/2 inches on either side. The Curb Shaper can also be adjusted to work on a 18-inch curb and gutter with ease. It can also be adjusted during use to accommodate the variations in form work that are common with this type of project. When asked about the product and the best way to use it, Doug Weber said, “We’ve found the best way to use the tool is
to pour around a three inch slump, stack the concrete about 10 to 12-inches wide, flatten and edge the top so you are level or even slightly downhill to the gutter side.” Flattening out the concrete beforehand prevents it from building up on the machine. Further features on the Curb Shaper that are designed to make it easy to use include its handle grips on each side of the machine. These allow the operator to easily turn corners. It also has an adjustable handle, so operations that have multiple users can easily adjust for their varying heights. nwhat’s new Get Finer Mulch for Ground Cover with St. George Company's New Much Head St. George Company has introduced a new mulch head series that delivers a finer mulch for excellent ground cover. As part of the Seven E Series mulchers, the new mulch head has a close ratio carbine hammer configuration to deliver Class 1 mulch without excessive wear on the internal beater bars. The mulchers are designed to attach to hydraulic excavators. When asked about the benefits of the new mulcher head design, a company spokesperson said, "Class 1 mulch is excellent for ground cover because it returns to nature more quickly than other mulch classes."
Express end-caps and fittings. Custom options are also available. According to Gene Schellhorn, Pentair Product Manager, “The Express Boom Assembly is as turn-key as it gets for wet booms. We ship a plumbed, performance-tested assembly that can be mounted in about an hour. It’s essentially a ‘boom-in-a-box’, specified for a customer’s precise needs.” Schellhorn says the benefits to OEMs and Distributors are obvious, “No drilling, no cutting, no threading. No custom tools or fixtures needed. No need to stock component parts such as pipes, fittings, or nozzle bodies. The Express Boom Assembly is a significant time and labor saver – saving our customers valuable time and money.” The Hypro Express Boom Assembly utilizes the awardwinning Hypro Express Nozzle Body End Cap, which eliminates trapped air from the boom by allowing air to escape through the nozzle body. This reduces nozzle turnoff time by 85%, eliminates dead-ends from each pipe, and eliminates potential chemical contamination. The Express Boom also utilizes O-ring sealed joints for all wet boom fittings, eliminating the need for leak-prone threaded joints and welded fittings. This also allows for lighter schedule 5 stainless steel pipe in place of heavy schedule 40 pipe. In addition to the standard configurations offered, the Hypro Express Boom can be ordered from the factory with custom tips, piping, gaskets, nozzle bodies and spacing.
The Seven E Series mulchers have external load main bearings and a fully enclosed steel body with hydraulic operated gate. The 20 mm thick Hardox steel skid pads improve the productive life of the mulcher, even when conditions are rugged. The fact that the mulcher uses a close ratio carbide hammer with replaceable internal beater bars means the hammers last a long time and require less horse power to operate than other mulchers that create Class 1 mulch. The Seven E Series mulchers come in four different models to fit hydraulic excavators from 5 to 40 tons. Mulcher widths are available in three to six feet and the mulcher can handle wood materials up to 10 inches in diameter. New EDGE Backhoes and Buckets
Thunder Creek Equipment is unveiling a new, portable solution for handling DEF. Just like all of Thunder Creek’s DEF delivery solutions, this system maintains the purity of the easily-contaminated fluid. The difference: this will fit in a standard truck bed. The new solution, the DEF Transport Tote, houses a 50 gallon DEF tank and Thunder Creek’s patent-pending 2-in-1 DEF pumping system under a lockable, weather sealed door.
The new line of vibrators is designed and engineered in the USA and will be manufactured in most Martin Engineering facilities worldwide to facilitate short lead times and service response. Nogaj said that the designs are likely to find utility in high frequency vibratory screens, sizing equipment, dewatering operations and other vibratory equipment for the oil and gas industries, as well as processing of coal, iron ore, gold and other elements, silica sand, pharmaceuticals and even food applications.
Three new EDGE Backhoe models feature a new mono-block style valve with higher rated spool seals to prevent valve leakage from high back pressure. These new models also now feature Grouser-style stabilizer pads as standard equipment for added stability and control. These new models are the EDGE BH509B, BH511B, and BH611B and join the BH485 model with the 180 degree boom pivot rotation. The digging depths of the new Backhoes range from 9’8” to 11’1”, and digging forces from 5676 to 6200 lb. Five new EDGE excavator-style Buckets are also available for these new Backhoes, and more easily accept a quick coupler for trouble-free hookup. The new EDGE Buckets come in 12”, 16”, 18”, 24” and 36” sizes with capacities ranging from 1.25 cubic foot to 4.05 cubic foot capacities for any size excavating job.
“What operators will like best about this solution is how well it will function for them,” says Luke Van Wyk, General Manager. “We’ve spent a lot of time designing this so you end up with a compact, convenient solution that maintains the contaminant-free nature of DEF.” The tote can be loaded and secured using the same lift points. Everything is then easily accessible from the driver side of the truck bed. Thunder Creek’s patent-pending 2-in-1 DEF pumping system allows you to fill and dispense DEF using just one pump. This exclusive system eliminates the need to purchase a separate DEF transfer pump (a savings of up to $2,000.) And unlike other portable DEF units on the market, you do not need to move the pump between filling and dispensing. It’s as simple as grabbing the hose, attaching either the Micro-Matic® coupler or dispensing nozzle, setting the flow direction and turning the pump on. Most importantly, the Thunder Creek system maintains a completely closed path, so exposure to contamination is minimized.
These new EDGE Backhoes and Buckets will give you the power to handle excavation jobs such as digging utility trenches or septic tanks without the necessity of bringing another large piece of equipment to a job site. “With a traditional screen vibrator, the drive functions as the energy source,” explained Robert Nogaj, Martin Engineering Vice President of Operations and Product Management. “The energy is transferred via structural bridge to the vibratory box which is isolated by the springs. With our new design, the energy source is an integral part of the structural tube that can be mounted to the sides or top of a vibratory box, making it much easier for designers to engineer and manufacture new kinds of vibratory screens.”

“The new Martin® Screen Vibrator is our own design,” Nogaj continued. “We started with several models, some of them direct retrofits for the Derrick® Shaker. But our drives are fully adjustable, so the customer has more flexibility and creativity in how the vibrators are used. We’re now in the process of expanding the product line beyond the models engineered to retrofit OEM equipment, including a line of much larger drives,” he added. The new vibrators can be used with Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) in ordinary and hazardous atmospheres. Explosion-proof models are ETL/cETL/ATEX/IECex certified for hazardous duty. The versatile dual-voltage product line can be used anywhere in the world, and the eccentric weights can be adjusted with hand tools to match “High G” or standard performance screens. No adaptors are needed to fit Derrick Vibrating Screens, as these direct-replacement units can be bolted and wired to existing connections. Designed for low maintenance, the only service required is lubrication with a standard grease gun every 2,000 hours, and the long-life bearings produce less noise than OEM oil bath bearings. nwhat’s new Lake Erie Portable Screeners Launches New Ground, Stacking and Radial Stacking Roller Bed Conveyors Lake Erie Portable Screeners has added three roller bed conveyors to its line of screening equipment. The company designed the new ground, stacking and radial stacking conveyors to withstand the harsh demands of processing materials in construction, landscaping and aggregate applications. They can be used with Lake Erie’s Pitbull™ 2300 screening plant to produce three grades of material at once. Roller bed conveyors excel in tough applications that require consistent and continuous transfer of materials. They move heavier loads faster and with less power than slider bed conveyors, which typically have smaller drive pulleys that require more torque to operate. And because the belts move across rollers instead of the entire surface of a slider bed, they operate with less friction, which is easier on the belts and translates to longer belt life.
BOMAG Introduces New Generation of Powerful and Durable Vibratory Tampers BOMAG’s new line of vibratory tampers includes a wider range of models that allows users to select a machine that best suits the requirements of a given job. The tampers combine low operating weights with superior compaction performance to optimize both productivity and ease of operation in applications such as trench construction, utility and cable backfill compaction, landscaping, and small repair jobs. Boasting the highest power in their respective weight classes, the BT60 weighs 128 pounds and delivers up to 3,372 pounds of impact force, while the BT65 weighs 150 pounds and produces 3,822 pounds of impact force. The BVT65 weighs 143 pounds and delivers 3,597 pounds of impact force. The BT60 is ideal for time-intensive use in confined spaces, the BT65 for jobs with the highest compaction demands, and the BVT65 for occasional use in typical applications. Each model is powered by an efficient 4-cycle Honda engine with recoil starter and offers a maximum travel speed of 66 feet per minute.
Stuart Foradora, factory representative at Lake Erie Portable Screeners, said overall the conveyors are uncomplicated, easy to service and very portable. They also provide easy belt tracking and last longer. “These conveyors complement our Pitbull 2300 screeners both in terms of utility and reliability,” he said. “We are serious about building heavy-duty products that our customers can rely on to take a beating and keep producing. These conveyors fit that description.”
The radial stacking conveyor features tire and wheel assemblies that can be positioned to allow the stacker to move on a radius instead of being limited to a fixed point. This allows users to pivot the conveyor left or right in a radial arch versus moving the entire unit when creating very large stockpiles.
Ruggedly built for demanding customer needs and long service life, the tampers include a cover and guards for allaround engine protection, dual air and fuel filter systems (single air filter for the BVT65), and an hour meter and tachometer with integrated service indicator (optional on BVT65). The units also feature a low oil alert system, easy access fuel and engine shutdown switch, and splash oil lubrication. A high-strength polyethylene tamping shoe with steel wear plate and a corrosion-free plastic fuel tank further contribute to enhanced durability. For operator safety and comfort, each tamper is equipped with a vibration-isolated steering handle that minimizes the vibration levels transferred to the operator, thereby increasing the number of hours an operator can safely use the machine. For added ergonomics, the handle is also height adjustable.
The standard size of the three conveyors is 30 inches wide by 20 feet long, and Lake Erie will customize designs to provide alternate sizes based on customer needs and applications. In addition to working well with the Pitbull 2300 screening plant, they can be paired with other machines for applications that require independent, heavy-duty conveyors.
The BT60 offers a standard operating width of 9 inches, while the BT65 and BVT65 each have a width of 11 inches. Four interchangeable shoe sizes (6, 9, 11 and 13 inches) are available as optional equipment. Additionally, optional 15-inch-tall tamper shoe extensions with 4- and 6-inch working widths are available.

Azuga customers have reported reducing their fleet’s CO2 emissions by at least 600 lbs. per vehicle annually by using this capability. “Using the Azuga solution, we are doing our bit to make this planet a greener place,” said Chris Parisis, president of CG Appliances. “We operate in the San Francisco Bay Area where environmental stewardship is regarded highly by our customers and community. In addition, Azuga is helping our vehicles run more efficiently and more economically.” According to World Resources Institute, fuel consumption from vehicle use generates 75 percent of a vehicle’s CO2 emissions over its lifecycle. Furthermore, The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says that most vehicles run at maximum efficiency at 60 miles per hour, and every 5 mph over 60 decreases efficiency by 6 percent. These factors, coupled with excessive idling, delayed maintenance and inefficient routing can contribute to increasing a fleet’s total CO2 emissions. [continued on next page]

nwhat’s new “Azuga G2™ technology actually ‘talks’ to the engine every second versus traditional GPS systems that infer idling based on infrequent GPS signals and less accurate GPS speed and ignition sensing,” said Azuga’s vice president, Ananth Rani. “We’re giving fleet managers the most accurate and up-todate information, which will reduce idling times, increase driver performance and ultimately reduce emissions.” The GPS fleet tracking solution’s technology reads vehicles’ engine and delivers emissions and idling reporting 60 times more often than traditional GPS systems. The information is sent to the cloud, giving fleet administrators real-time snapshots of vehicle health, fuel usage, carbon footprint and driver behavior. “With EPA fines ranging from approximately $52 to $32,000 in some states, fleet managers are scrambling to find solutions. Some of these solutions are costing up to three times more than our technology and delivering less-thanaccurate reports, said Rani. “If idling is wrong, fleet manager’s carbon footprint calculations are wrong and drivers may be penalized unfairly.” Companies across the country are experiencing Azuga’s ability to address the unique needs of emission reduction for fleets with breakthrough pricing ($0.70 per day/per vehicle), lifetime hardware warranties and no contracts – all industry firsts.
maintenance schedules, and beyond. Related information such as machine inspection data and photographs of machine damage can be imported into the system for further data consolidation. Other value-added features include the ability to sort reports by OEM, analyze data by machine category, and click to access real-time weather reporting from each jobsite to help fleet managers and equipment rental companies quickly ascertain the reason for low real-time utilization rates. Future enhancements such as idling data will be added as new versions of the AEMP standard dictate which data elements may be available from OEMs in a common format.
Using manual entry and/or wireless fuel and hour meters from OEM Data Delivery, customers are able to capture extensive data for analysis and decision making through EQUIPCHAT, which can be easily accessed online or on mobile devices. EQUIPCHAT provides easy-to-use data manipulation and reports that enable customers to easily deal with issues related to equipment availability, utilization, fuel accountability, and PM services, thus saving money and improving team and fleet effectiveness. The company’s equipment also ensures superior accuracy, which is crucial when dealing with costly machinery and large-scale projects.
“For the past decade, contractors with mixed fleets have been increasingly handicapped in their use of telematics by the fractured nature of the reporting. Only the largest fleets with exceptional budgets and large IT teams have been able to afford to consolidate the data from each OEM website,” said Steve Blackburn, VP North America, Navman Wireless. “Our new portal offers a single view of all telematics data
“We’ve been very successful implementing solutions for companies that are frustrated with their remote equipment monitoring, lost tax rebates, or expensive, untrustworthy data,” Simons added. “EQUIPCHAT substantially improves our customers’ ability to track, capture and deliver key equipment data, while slashing time spent on paperwork.”

Navman Wireless Debuts AEMP-Compliant Consolidated Telematics Portal Fleet tracking provider Navman Wireless USA recently announced a new web-based telematics portal designed to streamline management of mixed heavy equipment fleets by consolidating machine data from all OEM and Navman Wireless-tracked assets into a single interface. The new solution complies with the AEMP Telematics Data Standard, provides one-stop fleetwide visibility without adding thirdparty hardware to machines that already have factoryinstalled OEM telematics, and supports integration of data into the enterprise office system for broader business use. Fleet operators can request data access credentials from each OEM represented in their fleet. Data from each reporting source will be securely transmitted to operators’ servers and then aggregated for use in the portal’s widgets, dashboards, maps and reports. Information available from the portal ranges from machine location, fleet utilization, fuel burn, and geofence and curfew violations to equipment use by jobsite, preventive

nwhat’s new Jobsites Get ‘Greener’ with Recently Developed Propane-Fueled Mobile Generators and Lighting Kohler, PERC Bring Propane-Fueled Mobile Generators to Market. A new line of Kohler mobile generators recently will feature four propane-fueled models developed in cooperation with the Propane Education and Research Council (PERC), including one with an innovative, on-board LP tank. Kohler’s propane-fueled mobile generator, model 125REZGT, can operate on fuel from its on-board tank for approximately 24 hours. The 125REZGT also features an external LP gas connection that allows for extended usage when a dedicated, on-site propane fuel source is available. Today, more homes, businesses, and roadways are being built to stringent environmental standards, and propanefueled equipment can help construction professionals meet their sustainability goals, according to Bridget Kidd, PERC’s director of residential and commercial programs. “Developers, builders, and contractors can use propane technology to demonstrate their commitment to sustainability throughout the construction process and beyond,” Kidd said. “Simply by integrating propanefueled equipment like Kohler’s new mobile generators into their daily operations, construction professionals can help ensure a cleaner environment without sacrificing power or performance.” Because propane burns cleaner than other fuels, Kohler’s propane-fueled mobile generators produce fewer emissions, resulting in fewer toxins and less smog. As a result, construction crew members can enjoy improved air quality on the job site. Fuel spills that can happen when refueling jobsite equipment can potentially contaminate the surrounding soil. In fact, as little as one gallon of spilled gasoline can quickly contaminate groundwater above drinking water health advisory levels. However, that’s not a problem when fueling Kohler’s propane-powered generators. At atmospheric pressure, the non-toxic propane used to fuel these generators vaporizes, virtually eliminating the risk of spillage.
Magnum, PERC Bring Solar/ Propane Jobsite Lighting The greener, more efficient way to illuminate construction jobsites, is with a solar-powered and propane-fueled light tower from Magnum Power Products, developed in cooperation with PERC. The Magnum MLT4000S Solar Hybrid Light Tower’s LPfueled back-up generator keeps its batteries charged in all conditions, ensuring a safe, well-lit jobsite. Because the light tower does not consume diesel fuel, it’s less expensive to operate and produces significantly fewer greenhouse gas emissions.
May 2014
“Through PERC support, Magnum has created a truly green and fuel-efficient alternative to diesel-fueled light towers on the jobsite,” Bridget Kidd, PERC’s director of residential and commercial programs, said. “Because the MLT4000S combines solar power with a backup system using clean-burning, American-made propane, it’s also a more a cost-effective way for contractors to integrate sustainable practices into their operations.” Unlike diesel, propane does not degrade over time, reducing fuel-related performance problems. Propane also emits fewer carbon dioxide emissions and toxic pollutants than diesel, improving air quality and worker safety on the jobsite. Finally, propane fuel costs less than diesel, improving contractor profit margins.
Kohler’s propane-fueled mobile generator and Magnum Power Product's solar-powered and propane-fueled light tower ensure a cleaner environment without sacrificing power or performance.
During the day, a solar-panel array charges the light tower’s batteries for nighttime operation. If cloudy or inclement weather prevents the batteries from fully charging, a propane-fueled, air-cooled Generac generator turns on automatically and recharges the batteries until the solar panels can take over. The MLT4000S is durable, reliable, easy to use, and requires only minimal maintenance — making it ideal for both the construction business and the rental market, according to Dave McAllister, vice president of business development at Magnum. “Whether diesel fuel is difficult to come by at a particular jobsite, or users simply require a light tower that can automatically operate for several weeks, the MLT4000S is now an option,” McAllister said. “It’s a tough, reliable workhorse on the jobsite, which makes it a smart purchase for construction professionals, and its durability also makes it a great choice for the rental market.” A dependable light source is crucial to nighttime operations, ensuring worker safety and helping builders, road construction crews, and other contractors complete projects on time and on budget, McAllister noted. And, because the light tower runs on solar and propane energy, it produces fewer emissions and less noise — very important when rental customers use the unit at nighttime concerts or sporting events, for example. Adding to its reliability, the MLT4000S’s rugged LED light fixtures boast a lifespan five times that of traditional metal halide bulbs, providing more than 50,000 hours of illumination. The bulbs are serviceable with readily available components and an industry-standard LED-chip platform. Learn more at buildwithpropane.com.

Neal Manufacturing’s ESSP 550T, 750T Sealcoating Machines Deliver Exceptional Efficiency, Less Maintenance Neal Manufacturing, a division of Blastcrete Equipment Company and the leading manufacturer of sealcoating equipment, gives commercial contractors increased efficiency with its heavy-duty ESSP 550T and 750T trailermounted machines. The machines feature electric super sand pump (ESSP) systems that produce as much as 100 gpm for up to 50 percent faster coverage than diaphragm pumps. They also are equipped with a convenient water tank handwand holder, which eliminates the risk of damage from leaking sealer to cars, the machine or other surfaces. Neal Manufacturing’s ESSP 550T machines have a capacity of up to 550 gallons of material, and the larger 750T machines have a capacity of up to 750 gallons. The high capacities reduce the time associated with refilling the tank on large projects and additional trips to the sealer manufacturer or distributor. In addition to the hydraulically driven, electrically controlled ESSP system, the units come with 75 feet of reinforced hose, a 6-foot hand wand and a six-nozzle spray bar. Users can add an additional hand wand or 87-inch spray bar for faster coverage. The spray bar can apply material in 16-foot passes for even greater efficiency on larger projects. Operators also can choose the optional 50-gpm electrically operated hydraulic piston pump (ESP), which delivers enough volume to operate two hand wands. The ESSP transfers up to 100 gallons of material into the tank per minute, which is the fastest transfer rate on the market. It also can process high sand loads, which is a requirement on some state, federal and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) projects. V-twin, 18-horsepower Kohler Command PRO® gasoline engines power the ESSP system and deliver high torque for strong material mixing in the tank. The pump also provides on-demand action;

since it pumps only when pressure drops during spraying, it consumes less horsepower, reduces fuel consumption and increases engine life. Neal Manufacturing designs its ESP and ESSP pumps for low maintenance and longevity, with 75 percent fewer parts than traditional air pumps. They feature leather cups that tightly seal the plates to prevent material from leaking. Unlike diaphragm pumps that require daily flushing to prevent their rubber seals from degrading, the leather cups in the hydraulic piston pumps will not degrade. Users only need to flush them once per year, which can save up to 30 minutes per day. The seals last up to 200,000 gallons, depending on the sand load. The pumps include 2.5-gallon material filters that capture more debris so the machines can spray longer between filter cleanings. They also feature Neal’s Generation III pump heads. The Generation III controller serves as the brain for the reciprocating cylinder – the unit that drives the material pump – and features a specialized, time-tested and reliable design for uninterrupted pumping power. In addition to more volume, Neal’s pump offers more power, increased suction and the ability to spray larger volumes of materials with heavy sand loads, either through multiple hand wands or a spray bar. Both sealcoating machines feature an in-line surge tank that reduces material surging to ensure continuous flow of material for uniform coverage. The machines’ hydraulic [continued on page A9]

n equipment spotlight agitation system features a unique three-blade design; the blades are offset to ensure two blades are in the material at all times, which produces a more thoroughly mixed product. The shaft of the agitator also is made with solid steel for exceptional strength, durability and longer wear life. The control panels on the sealcoating machines allow users to change the direction and speed of the pump and agitator. They also allow operators to accurately control the water cleanup system. Large indicator lights alert users to the status of the machine from long distances. Users can access the tank through the 21-inch square manway that includes an interior safety lid and sandbag splitter. Neal Manufacturing uses high-gauge structural tube steel to build its trailers. The tubular construction increases strength, which in turn minimizes the risk of cracks and structural failures that are more common in frames with C-channel construction. In addition, they can be towed from job to job with a standard 2 5/16-inch ball hitch or an optional pintle hitch. They also have breakaway safety switches that automatically apply the brakes and prevent the trailers from rolling out of control should the trailer get separated from the tow vehicle. The trailers also are equipped with the appropriate department of transportation lights for safe travel.

Schneider, one of the nation’s largest trucking companies and home to one of the industry’s largest selections of used fleet equipment, announced recently that it will add 5,700 trailers to its offering of used equipment for sale. The truckload carrier plans to invest in more new equipment this year, making now the right time for its used trailers to find new homes. Over 400 used trailers are immediately available, and additional trailers will be added to Schneider’s inventory monthly throughout the year.
“Schneider’s used fleet trailers are versatile and a solid investment for trucking operations, storage units, farm use, construction projects and pallet companies,” said Rob Reich, vice president, Maintenance, at Schneider. “Buyers will be hard pressed to find a better value.”
To ensure its customers know how to properly operate and maintain the machines, Neal Manufacturing also offers free training seminars at its Anniston, Ala. location.

Portable, Modular Conveyor Plays Key Role In Chicago Transit Authority Track Rehabilitation Project When a major contractor needed to rehabilitate several miles of the Chicago Transit Authority’s (CTA’s) rapid transit tracks, a Portable Modular Conveyor helped meet the important requirements of placing ballast along the track bed. The project was part of Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s “Building a New Chicago” initiative. The CTA’s Red Line South Reconstruction Project involved rebuilding the 10.2-mile stretch from just north of Cermak-Chinatown to 95th Street. The 44-year-old line had exceeded its expected life and was plagued by slow zones and delays, according to the CTA. Five months later, the $425 million project—funded by the “Illinois Jobs Now!” program— delivered a brand new railroad to an estimated 80,000 daily riders. The scope of work included improvements to eight stations, as well as elevators to make the entire south Red Line more accessible to customers with disabilities. As noted, the project also included the placement of a new track bed, including new rail ties, tracks, and ballast (the stone material along the tracks). A key to replacing the 1 in. to 3 in. ballast was a Portable Modular Conveyor from E2 Systems, LLC. The versatile equipment helped the contractor meet some unique project needs. One of the challenges is that the tracks are located between the eastbound and westbound lanes of Chicago’s busy Dan Ryan Expressway (Interstate 90/94). The project also involved placing more than 200,000 tons of AREMA (1) No. 3 ballast, as well as 90,000 tons of Illinois DOT CA6 (course aggregate), most of which had to be placed at night, when lane closures would be least disruptive to Chicago commuters. The project called for a minimum of 8 in. of sub-ballast, over which 12 in. of ballast was placed under the railroad ties, and 7 in. of ballast was placed between the ties.
Walls and Fences No Barrier to Success Although the track work was completed under the auspices of the CTA, the contractor also worked with the Illinois Department of Transportation (Illinois DOT), whose specifications and standards applied to the adjacent highway.
The DOT provided guidance on lane closures, as well as the use of the highway lanes and shoulders for equipment access. The work on the tracks and the adjacent area needed to be completed without disturbing the walls and fences, which meant the ballast had to be “pitched” over the safety/security structures, required by the Illinois Department of Transportation. The concrete walls and fences are a necessary safety feature, but they also made placing the 1 in. to 3 in. stone during the track reconstruction project more challenging. The contractor was only allowed to close a single lane and the shoulder from 6:00 PM until 6:00 AM, which only provided a 17’ working path. “The Illinois DOT’s wall is 42 in. high, and the fence added another two feet of height, so we had to make adjustments to the equipment to clear the 6’ barrier, which operated 6 to 8 ft. away on the inside shoulders. A standard conveyor would not shoot the ballast that far,” according to the project manager. The contractor used two different approaches to placing the ballast. The first was a series of metal bins, into which dump trucks dropped the ballast. The boxes were then tipped over the walls/fences, after which, the ballast was spread into place. The other option used E2 System’s Portable Modular Conveyor, which was moved along the shoulder on a front-end loader. Moving the 8.5 ft.-wide conveyor into place, as well as assembling it to its base was made easy because of its compatibility with most manufactures’ wheel loaders and other modular equipment. The conveyor also can be rotated 180 degrees to accommodate desired travel direction, another feature that proved helpful in both set-up and operation.
After the short set-up, individual dump trucks backed into place, deposit their loads of ballast into the conveyor’s 2 CY hopper, and then the conveyor moved the ballast into place. Although the hopper was plenty large enough to handle large loads, the extra capacity was not needed for this project, because the conveyor moved the ballast into place within seconds. As the first group of dump trucks headed back to staging areas (a nearby quarry and the contractor’s yard), crews easily and quickly moved the conveyor, which weighs only about 9,800 pounds. This process of “walking” the conveyor along the shoulder was smooth and seamless, and without any apparent effort or time. “The E2 equipment provided a very productive machine that does not require double-handling,” according to the project manager. “The productivity was about the same [as the boxes], but we wanted to have a couple of different ways to get stone over the walls.” “The biggest advantage is the very simple, open design,” the contractor’s project manager said. “There are not a lot of moving parts, which made me comfortable, especially with the large, abrasive materials we were handling. We looked at other equipment with augurs, multiple conveyors, and more. With other systems, we were concerned about the large ballast ripping the belt apart.” [continued on page A12]

9 Things To Know Before Selecting a Four-Wheel Drive Utility Vehicle An industry insider tells you how to get the most for your money.
C
ontractors around the world tightened their fiscal belts during the global recession that began in 2007. As a result, many switched from costly pickup trucks to more nimble, less expensive utility transport vehicles (UTVs). They discovered that UTVs compress job site cycle times, reduce costs and drive top-line revenue. But it takes a heavy duty UTV to replace a pickup truck. As a result, four-wheel drive UTVs are gaining market share. If you’re in the market for a 4x4 UTV, Kurt Meyer, commercial marketing manager at Club Car, offers these tips:
1. Start with a reality check. “A lot of 4x4 sales are driven by perception, not reality,” Meyer says. “Two-wheel drive vehicles are often sufficient for facilities and ground maintenance and other applications. But 4x4s can really earn their keep on construction sites.”
2. Keep it simple. When shopping for a 4x4, consider ease of use first. Look for a vehicle with automatic all-wheel drive. “Otherwise, you’ll have to train employees to pull the right levers, push the right buttons and lock and unlock the differentials. With an automatic 4x4, drivers just select forward or reverse. The system does the rest,” Meyer says.
3. Shop for durability. Look for a vehicle built on a frame that’s made of a rust-proof, corrosionresistant material, such as aluminum. Vehicles built on steel frames tend to rust and lose value over time, especially those subject to water and chemicals. It’s also important to look for a strong bed box that is user friendly and won’t rust.
4. Check the suspension system. Vehicles designed for recreation are often marketed as work vehicles, yet they may reach speeds of 50-60 mph, a risk on work sites. “More importantly, their suspension systems are engineered to accommodate speed, not payloads. When loaded, the rear end tends to sag, reducing ground clearance and unbalancing the vehicle’s weight distribution,” Meyer says. UTVs built for work, on the other hand, are a bit slower, but their suspension systems are designed for payloads. “Shop for a 4x4 with a four-link semi-independent rear suspension system, like those in Jeeps™ and Land Rovers™. These combine the strength of a solid axle with independent suspension
performance, making for excellent ground clearance, even when fully loaded,” Meyer says.
5. Look for fuel compatibility. Since most construction and industrial sites power heavy equipment with diesel, many users prefer diesel utility vehicles. Diesel vehicles also last longer, are more fuel efficient and can do the heavy lifting. “Look for a commercial-grade diesel motor with sealed intake to protect the system from dirt and dust,” Meyer says.
6. Consider seating. Multi-seating UTVs are growing in popularity because carrying people in the back of a pickup is just no longer safe or viable. Although adding a rear-facing two passenger seat is an option, this can eat up bed space. “If you want to transport two crews and their equipment, look for a vehicle with an extended frame, four forward-facing seats and ample bed space,” Meyer says.
7. Think outside the box. Find a manufacturer with a custom solutions department with decades of problem-solving experience. “Your facility may have jobs that need specific solutions such as trash removal trucks, van boxes to protect high-value equipment, or even on-site ambulances,” Meyer says. [continued on next page]
“Make ease of use a primary concern when buying 4x4s. Look for a vehicle with automatic all-wheel drive. That way, drivers need no training. They just select forward or reverse. The system does the rest.” The Carryall 1700 features automatic all-wheel drive, a 4-link semiindependent rear suspension system, seating for four, and a total vehicle capacity of 1,600 pounds. It’s ideal for construction applications.

Selecting a Four-Wheel Drive | continued
The belt speed of approximately 550 ft/min meant that trucks were emptied in a matter of seconds. The three-ply, 60-in. wide belting also stood up to the large, irregularly shaped ballast with no problems. Also, the conveyor’s 21 ft. length allowed the ballast to be placed over the top of the wall/fence structures.
Accessories can also improve efficiency. “But be careful here. Some UTV manufacturers focus on agricultural or consumer accessories rather than commercial accessories like ladder racks, tools boxes, van boxes and dump kit,” Meyer says. “Check this out up front.”
Control of the conveyor is in the hands of the loader operator, who maintains control from the loader cab. (Crewmembers stationed at key points provide signals to the loader operator as well as the dump trucks.) During operation, the belt speed is controlled by the RPM of the loader engine. As an added measure of performance and safety, a flow control valve will limit flow and speed, if required.
Meyer also suggests you ask about cabs, enclosures, heaters, fans and other equipment that can turn your vehicles into year-round assets.
“The speed was variable by the use of hydraulics and the size gears in the motor. It was a matter of finding a happy medium between torque and speed,” the project manager said. As designed, the system features a low torque, high-speed hydraulic motor. The loader’s pump capacity must match conveyor motor and minimum requirements, 40 g/m @ 3000 psi. Oil supply to the conveyor motor is from loader, and a third valve function control is required. “We got a lot of help from Mike Evangelista and his staff at E2 Systems. We were looking for answers, and they always seemed to have the right answers.” At the end of the shift, the conveyor was dissembled, loaded onto a lowboy trailer, and returned to the yard. The conveyor folded at mid-point to travel in a 10-foot path while attached to the loader. Folding and travel features controlled from the conveyor’s base also helped make short work of loading and unloading the equipment, as well as assembly/ disassembly from the base.
8. Chose a proven partner. Look for an established manufacturer with a network of authorized dealers and distributors. Make sure they staff factory-trained mechanics and offer easy access to parts. “Parts and service can be a major issue with vehicles made abroad,” Meyer says 9. Buy peace of mind. Look for the longest, most inclusive warranty you can find, and be sure to read the fine print and exclusions. “Warranties differ considerably from manufacturer to manufacturer,” Meyer says. “Finally, don’t look at purchase price alone. Consider durability, versatility, fuel efficiency and maintenance costs. These factors make all the difference in the total cost of ownership,” Meyer says.
Cut Fleet Costs With UTVs When compared to pickup trucks, UTVs: 1. Cost less to purchase 2. Cut maintenance and parts costs
About E2 Systems
3. Drastically cut or eliminate fuel use and emissions
The company name, E2 Systems comes from the brothers Evangelista, Mike and Carl, who bring to the business extensive experience as paving contractors. “When we were in the paving business, we thought about buying conventional material placers, but they were always very expensive,” says Mike Evangelista. “We could not justify the purchase because we did not use them often enough.” “The machines were expensive to buy and operate,” he says, adding, “set-up could take a couple of days.” In 2007, while setting up a paving project, Evangelista joked with a company employee, observing that “we stick different attachments to paving equipment, so why not a conveyor?” The concept took a serious turn when Evangelista decided to design and build a prototype of a portable conveyor. “We unloaded concrete from Agitor trucks at about 200 SY/hour,” he said, and by 2008, a second prototype was built that would accommodate trucks backing into the unit.
4. Are designed for start/stop driving and generally last longer 5. Don’t require insurance, tags or drivers’ licenses 6. Prevent off-site use and resulting expenses 7.
Can be driven on trails and right up to worksites
8. Can be accessorized or customized for specific tasks 9. Are easier to get into and out of
“We used it on the Interstate-75 reconstruction project,” Evangelista explained, “On the first day, we poured 4,500 SY of concrete.” In 2010, the company began its sales and marketing efforts in earnest, and today, contractors throughout the United States use the patented system. The simplicity of the design, the portability and modularity of the equipment, also make it an attractive investment for contractors, as the costs is considerably lower than more complex equipment traditionally sold in the marketplace. As for the City of Chicago, the CTA’s Red Line passengers now have a reliable rapid transit system that links riders between the south side and downtown in about 20 minutes. Riders and casual observers may not be aware of how all that stone under and around the tracks got there, but for the contractor and agencies involved, it was no secret that an affordable, portable and modular conveyor was a key component in this successful construction project!
The Club Car Carryall 1500 with the IntelliTach hydraulic attachment system with three attachments also features automatic all wheel drive. It’s great for plowing snow, moving pallets and dispersing truckloads of gravel, mulch or sand around a site using its standard front bucket.

Are You Talkin’ To Me?
Understand and Adapt to Different Communication Styles By Ted Gorski
I
n today’s business world, leaders need excellent communication skills. Many are being asked to do more with fewer resources while also dealing with the stresses of a corporation that is downsizing and/or tightening budgets. To remain effective, leaders need near perfect communication skills regardless of their own communication type. Understanding the style of the person you are communicating with can make the difference between getting your message across and getting it across well. Consider these four communication styles and how you can effectively communicate with each one:
THE AGGRESSOR-ASSERTER These are your CEOs in attitude. They are very competitive, goaloriented, demanding, task-oriented and fast-paced. To these people, time is money and money is time. You know where you stand since they are blunt and direct in their communication. Their biggest fear is losing control and they ask the “What” questions. The Aggressor-Asserter has key strengths that include providing momentum, providing focus and making quick decisions. Their “on top of it” approach to projects can keep the rest of the team on target or even get it done early. However, this must be balanced as their weaknesses include overstepping their assignments, taking over tasks that have been assigned to others (and not necessarily because they can do them better, they just want to get them done).
To effectively connect with the Aggressor-Asserter, you must: Be brief, direct and concise. Provide options. Use a fast, quick pace. Focus on results and return-on-investment. Avoid providing lots of details. Provide short answers. Look them straight in their eyes. Be truthful.
THE SOCIALIZER These individuals are charismatic, enthusiastic, persuasive, lively, loud, talkative, friendly, people-oriented and very social. They are also visual and creative. Their biggest fear is social rejection and they ask the “who” questions. The Socializer is a great motivator. In the most organizations, these are on sales team. They are very creative and enjoy brainstorming. They do not keep track of time well and sometimes work tight to deadlines. They enjoy being the center of attention.
To effectively communicate with a Socializer, you must: Allow time for social interaction. Put details in writing or email. Have a fast pace, positive approach. Use a whiteboard in your discussions (Socializers are quite visual). Use phrases like “Picture this” or “Do You See.” Avoid a harsh, aggressive tone.

THE MEDIATOR These individuals are calm, level-headed, great listeners, team-oriented, introverted and loyal. They make decisions in a consensus manner. Mediators like to marinate on questions—you will not get an answer immediately. They dislike conflict so they will internalize and tolerate it. As a result, this internalization builds until they explode. Their biggest fear is loss of stability and they ask the “How” questions. Team and project managers are typically fall into this style. Weaknesses include being hesitant in their approach slowing decision-making—they are going to try to keep everyone happy at the expense of their happinesss. Mediators are hard-working who are humble and do not pat themselves on the back. They make great teachers/trainers and mentors due to their calming and supportive nature
To effectively connect with a Mediator, you must: Be patient and logical. Use a steady, low-keyed approach. Involve Mediators in the planning process. Praise them privately. Allow time for “marination of ideas”. You will not get a quick answer. Start conversation with a warm and friendly greeting. Keep your tone of voice at discussion level.
THE ANALYZER These individuals are meticulous, detail-oriented, introverted and taskoriented. These individuals can be considered perfectionists and they are suspicious of others. They may answer a question with a question. Their biggest fear is criticism of work and they ask the “why” questions. Key strengths of the Analyzer include being detailed-oriented, superb problem solvers and providing the team’s reality check. Weaknesses include having tunnel vision on projects and looking for the perfect solution.
To effectively communicate with the Analyzer, you must: Be organized and logical. Support your position using facts. Make sure that each point is understood before moving to the next point. Not use the phrase—“Let me give you some constructive advice.” Use words such as process, data and procedure. Realize that Analyzers are motivated by quality and data. Communicating effectively with the various types is an art. Understanding a person’s style allows you to create harmony and avoid confusion. Developing your “adaptitude” – your ability to adapt your communication style to the listener – is a critical element of being an effective team member. When you are able to recognize the various styles and adjust your approach, your life will be easier and void of the common communication “ills.” ABOUT THE AUTHOR Ted Gorski is a Professional Certified Coach (PCC) and President of Get Your Edge, LLC. 10 Reasons Cargo Container-Based Construction
Will Revolutionize the Building Industry In the wake of economic challenges, concerns over the environment, and significant natural disasters, many industries are seeking alternative building approaches. One of these approaches has been to consider the revolutionary advances that cargo contained-based construction has made. Here are ten reasons that illustrate why this type of construction is so compelling.
Strength and Durability. Strength and durability of shipping container -based construction far exceeds the traditional stick built and most modular construction. Compared to traditional construction that uses wood, which can rot over time, the containers will experience no rot because the containers are made of steel. In addition, the frame can withstand severe damage in natural disasters such as earthquakes and hurricanes. Creativity and Flexibility.
