equipment standouts» Little Beaver Offers Simple, Efficient Soil Sampling Tools Little Beaver Inc., the leading manufacturer of torquefree, one-man earth drills, provides convenient, fast and economical soil sampling tools and equipment that give owners control over when and where they sample. The combination of the company’s Big Beaver Auger Drill Rig with the optional SSK-1 kit is ideal for standard penetration testing (SPT) as it easily lifts the 140-pound hammer to drive the sampler into the soil. Little Beaver also offers hand-sampling tools that can be used with its mechanical and hydraulic-powered earth drills for quick and easy environmental soil sampling. The SSK-1 kit includes an additional hydraulic valve, Cathead and tower kit with stabilizer legs that extend out in front of the drill for additional stability. It can be used with Little Beaver’s AWJ drilling rod and 24-inch split spoon sampler, which allows a user to obtain a core soil sample for geotechnical or environmental testing.
Turbo Filtration’s Turbo® Precleaner PowerRam is the right choice for large machines operating in severeduty environments. With its innovative directional scoop and its wide-angled air intake, the PowerRam improves engine performance by reducing air-intake restriction and delivering more air to the engine at highway speeds, boosting fuel efficiency.
The Big Beaver is portable and is designed for limited access with a width of only 26 inches and a height of 80 inches. Because it is compact, one person can easily maneuver the two-wheeled unit through gates, doorways and even basements. The drill’s hydraulic power source is available with a 20-horsepower gasoline engine and can be used with other hydraulic tools like concrete saws, breakers, tampers and chain saws. Like all Little Beaver earth drills, the Big Beaver features the company’s patented torque tube that enhances safety by allowing the operator to remain a safe distance from the power source and absorbing dangerous kickback when hitting tough soils or obstructions. In addition to the Big Beaver and SSK-1 kit, Little Beaver also offers standard hand-sampling tools for environmental soil sampling. The samplers are available in 1.5-inch and 2-inch diameters, and can be used with any of the company’s mechanical or hydraulic earth drills. The hydraulic earth drills are available with 11- or 20-horsepower gasoline engines or other diesel engine options, which makes them ideal for drilling in rocky or heavy clay soils. They also feature a three-wheeled chassis for enhanced stability and maneuverability. Little Beaver’s mechanical earth drills are available in 5.5 or 8 horsepower and offer fast operating speeds of up to 360 rpm for increased productivity and cleaner holes. The drills’ four-wheeled chassis increase stability when transporting over rough terrain. For sandy or loose soils, Little Beaver also offers hollowstem augers that allow the driller to collect samples without the risk of contamination from the surrounding unstable soil. Available in 6- and 8-inch diameters, the augers feature a 2¾-inch or 3¾-inch internal diameter, and work great for monitoring wells. The center rod and center plug can be removed to create a clear path for inserting the soil sampler while keeping adjacent soil from falling into the testing area to give operators an undisturbed sample. Once the hole is drilled, the Big Beaver also features a swing-away drive head that makes adding extensions and using a soil sampler quick and simple.
The Big Beaver and SSK-1 kit are ideal for standard penetration testing.

In addition, the PowerRam features a louvered screen, which prevents plugging from snow and ice build-up at high speeds, extending filter life by removing dirt and dirt particles along with debris in rain and snow from intake air. It also protects against the re-entry of sooty exhaust air into air-intake “Designed with rugged yet light-weight metal construction, the PowerRam is tough enough to weather the elements, and is designed with an durable powder coat finish to guard against rust, chemical attack and corrosion,” said Tracy Long, turbo Filtration’s director of business development. “The PowerRam also offers a number of reducers to enable configuration to your specific application.” Turbo Filtration’s PowerRam is designed to meet the performance needs of machines requiring airflow between the 400 and 1500 cfm. This makes it well-suited for the heavy demands of the logging, agriculture, mining, steel and construction industries, and excels in coal pushing dozers, articulated dump trucks, concrete mixers, chippers, tub-grinders, mulch machines and older cab-over-trucks still in service.
The hollow stem auger keeps adjacent sandy or loose soils out of the testing area for uncontaminated soil samples.
The turbo Precleaner line is uniquely designed for high quality and efficiency. Unlike other precleaners that typically use “reverse axial” designs, the turbo brand employs a straight-through air flow path. This means dirty incoming air enters the top of the unit and flows directly into guide vanes. The air is directed into a high-velocity airpowered rotor chamber, which is powered by the machine’s engine and is rotating at about 5,000 rpm. There, engineered blades create centrifugal force, spinning out of the unit through special discharge ports more than 85 percent of contaminants, some as small as 1 micron, including dust, dirt, insects and moisture, ultimately allowing only purified air into the machinery.
Little Beaver offers a 24-inch split spoon sampler for geotechnical and environmental testing.
With reverse axial designs, dirty air enters the bottom of the Precleaner where it must make a U-turn, restricting the air flow and robbing the engine of power. Higher restriction means filters don’t last as long, engines don’t work as efficiently and equipment generally requires more maintenance.
For drilling to shallow depths of 15-30 feet, Little Beaver offers a tripod kit for use with its 11-horsepower, PS11 Hydraulic Earth Drill. The kit allows operators to add and remove auger extensions without hand lifting. It also stabilizes the drill during operation for precise positioning and controlled drilling. For more information call 800-227-7515 or visit the website at www.littlebeaver.com.
Turbo Filtration’s PowerRam Turbo® Precleaner protects engines while boosting fuel efficiency
With the ability to be configured directionally, as well as its distinctive features and appearance, the PowerRam fills a need with design engineers searching for innovative solutions handling various types of debris in a plethora of applications and equipment.
The swing away drive head on the Big Beaver makes adding extensions and using soil sampling tools fast and easy.

equipment innovations: remote controlled demolition robots

The Strength of 20 Men: a Challenge of Dangerous Proximities Meets a
Little Giant A 2,000 pound wrecking ball crashes into the concrete walls of an aged silo, sending jagged chunks of concrete, dust and debris to the ground. Explosives detonate, reducing once solid structures to rubble. When most people think of demolition, these are the scenes that come to mind. But on one Port of Tampa project, they were exactly what two demolition companies had to avoid.
The Brokk 180 was hoisted by a crane to the top of the silo to begin demolition of the roof.
The Port of Tampa Authority hired Kimmins Contracting to demolish three 150-foot silos and a 180-foot grain elevator that sat just five feet away from the nearest of several tanks that store thousands of gallons of highly combustible fuel. Any damage to the nearby tanks could release dangerous fumes or fuel and create serious health and environmental hazards. Kimmins needed to get the job done cleanly, precisely and safely. To do it, the company turned to True-Line Coring and Cutting and its small yet powerful Brokk machines.
No Margin for Error
The three silos and one grain elevator sat within five feet of several combustible fuel tanks.
The compact Brokk 180 was light enough to sit on the roof of the structures yet powerful enough to break up the tough concrete.
The Port of Tampa sits near the west coast of Florida just 25 miles from the open waters of the Gulf of Mexico. The port, which handles a vast array of cargo, is one of the top eight cruise ports in the nation and the largest port in the state. The four structures slated for demolition were located along the east side of the port and had been empty for years. Not only had they become a nuisance, but they also were hindering access to the neighboring fuel tanks. They had to come down. Kimmins, one of the largest civil engineering and demolition contractors on Florida’s west coast, knew safety was paramount, and meticulous, precise demolition in limited space was the key. Explosives were clearly not an option, and using a wrecking ball could send debris onto the tanks, cause damage and potentially release dangerous fumes. It also could allow fuel to escape and leach into the ocean, which would harm fragile ocean life.
True-Line Coring and Cutting used the Brokk to break up the concrete roof of each structure, dropping debris to the inside and away from the delicate nearby fuel tanks.
August 2013
Kimmins decided demolishing the buildings with large concrete shears was the safest option. Typically, this process begins by crushing the walls, but this wasn’t a typical job. Demolishing the walls first would cause the concrete above to topple toward the tanks. Instead, the company developed a plan to demolish the ceilings first so debris could be pushed safely inside the structures.
The remote-controlled Brokk allowed the operator to remain a safe distance from the work, while maintaining a clear view of the demolition.

Kimmins knew what needed to be done, but its equipment wasn’t capable of such a precision project; it was an unusual challenge that required an unusual solution. The company called in True-Line out of Tampa.

American Carrier Equipment Delivers Industry’s Lightest, Strongest and Most Advanced All-Steel Bottom Dump Trailer At 9,680 lbs., new super-steel belly dump is 30 percent lighter, handles better, discharges cleaner and pays for itself with extra load capacity. American Carrier Equipment announced that its new, ultra-high-tensile-strength steel bottom dump trailer is now delivering to customers in the western United States. The all-steel, tandem-axle, semi-bottom-dump trailer is the culmination of a two-year research, development and field-testing program aimed at producing a tough, lightweight, super breed of trailer for severe-duty applications. The new trailer is 30 percent lighter, has 300 percent greater structural integrity and accommodates 12.5 percent greater load capacity than competitive offerings. “My new trailer virtually pays for itself and then some,” Don Reeve, president of Reeve Trucking in Stockton, Calif., said. “Its lightweight design saves me fuel, and its 24-cubic-yard, 28-ton load capacity allows me to haul three extra cubic yards of material with each load, or the equivalent of a ‘free’ load over the course of an average seven-load day.” Careful attention has also been paid to the new trailer’s off-road performance and handling characteristics. American Carrier Equipment (ACE) employed advanced design techniques, including
Dual-Trip Design THE BOSS’ dual-trip design of the DXT delivers enhanced plow protection when striking hidden obstacles. «what’s new finite element analysis (FEA) testing, allowing its engineers to simulate a wide variety of dynamic stresses, from extreme heavy-haul loads to punishing off-road conditions and accelerated aging. In fact, the company was the first to taper its steel trailer’s front and rear structural members, because FEA showed that tapering alleviates stress points throughout the trailer, creating a stronger framework and a lighter vehicle in the process. Towing properties have also been enhanced through the addition of a unique, fully oscillating kingpin. Unlike the sleeve-type designs used in some trailer kingpins, the ACE bottom dump kingpin functions as a solid, finished bearing, helping to absorb and disperse the lateral stresses exerted on the trailer through pull and brake torque. Working as a technically advanced hauling system, the design of the new ACE bottom dump trailer makes it easier to load, tow and discharge on harsh and severely challenging terrains. “Our new ACE bottom dump trailers haul more, handle better, unload cleaner and cost us much less in fuel and maintenance to operate,” Reeve said. “We stay abreast of emerging trailer technology, and we’re convinced that American Carrier Equipment deserves best-of-breed status when it comes to bottom dump trailers." The new ACE bottom dump trailer has also been designed to provide superior discharge characteristics. The interior bed slope has been engineered to promote optimum load release flow when the gate is opened. The design promotes complete emptying and reduces the potential for load material, such as asphalt, to “bridge” or form into non-flowing masses that remain in the trailer bed. “Our ACE belly dumps empty clean, and in our business, that saves us lots of time and money,” Reeve said.
founding in 1934, ACE has built a reputation for intelligent design and quality construction, and I think the founders would be proud to see the brand name applied to this new trailer.” For more information call 800-344-2174 or visit www. americancarrierequipment.com. _______________________________________________

The F-Class features an advanced eccentric shaft design, supported by four high-performance, double spherical roller bearings. The double eccentric shaft creates a constant positive stroke that handles material volume spikes without losing momentum. As the eccentric shaft turns, the screen body is forced to follow the shaft movement. While it travels upward, the counterbalance weights move in the opposite direction and create an equal force. As a result, the forces cancel each other, and the result is a dynamically balanced system that transmits minimal to no vibrations into the structure. This allows operations to place multiple screens side by side while minimizing their investments into heavy structures. Furthermore, the design keeps noise to a minimum. The continual circular screening action provided by the eccentric design of the F-Class also produces a constant, optimized G-Force. Not only does this further maximize screening efficiency, it allows the equipment to be an effective in both wet and dry applications. “The double eccentric technology incorporated in our F-Class has been used extensively in mining and aggregate applications,” said Duncan High, assistant division manager of machinery at W.S. Tyler. “With production of the 4-foot-wide F-Class, even producers processing lower tonnages can benefit from the solutions the F-Class design offers.” Designed for operations that require a smaller footprint and capacity, the 4-foot F-Class can process up to 300 tons per hour while providing efficient, accurate sizing. It precisely screens virtually any material from 3 inches down to 20 mesh.
10-foot wide platforms. Within each platform, parameters such as screen length and the number of decks the application requires are selected. W.S. Tyler’s screening experts consult with every customer to personalize the machine and optimally adapt to each operation, multiple variables such as deck setup, wear lining and speed and stroke combinations are available to meet application requirements. W.S. Tyler’s substantial engineering experience goes into every F-Class vibrating machine. Prior to shipping and after commissioning, all screens undergo extensive testing, inspections and vibration analysis. This process ensures each customer achieves optimal performance within the their specific operation and performance targets. The F-Class is backed by a standard 18-month warranty from date of shipment, 12 months from the installation date, or 6,000 operation hours – whichever comes first. This warranty can be increased with optional customer-specific warranty upgrade packages. For more information visit www.wstyler.ca. _______________________________________________

t best practices: power | by Mike Hale, Sales Manager, Little Beaver Inc. best practices» power earthearth augerauger safety safety – by Mike Hale, Sales Manager, LITTLE BEAVER, INC.
Don’t Dig Dangerously: Safety First When Working With Power Earth Augers With a strong commitment to safety, everyone can go home at the end of the day with all fingers, toes and backs intact. A power earth auger accomplishes its work beneath the ground, but the most important aspect of any project – making sure everything is safe for the operator and other crew members – starts before the machine’s point ever pierces the surface. It sounds like common sense, but keeping safety top of mind before starting any job is crucial to avoiding injuries, some of which can be serious. There are potential hazards for any digging job, and while most machines are designed with safety in mind, it’s always a good idea to review best practices and stay up to date with industry guidelines to protect everyone on the jobsite.
It’s All In The Call Knowing the worksite and preparing accordingly is a crucial first step before beginning any digging project. Hazards may lurk just a few feet below the surface, where anything from utility lines to underground sprinklers, sewer pipes to transmission cables can be hiding. Inadvertently hitting any of them can cause a big mess, create a costly problem and, in the worst cases, cause serious injuries. Buried gas lines or power lines are the most dangerous, with the potential for electrocution, fire, severe burns or even fatalities. Always call the national one-call line at 811 at least 48 hours prior to digging to have underground utilities marked. No exceptions, no excuses. When there are underground obstacles, allow an adequate amount of space around them. The general rule of thumb is a radius of two to three feet around a marked area. After the site has been prepped, with the underground lines marked, it’s time to ready yourself and the machine for safe and effective digging.
Check Yourself, Check Your Machine Operators need to wear appropriate personal protective gear and follow basic dress code practices when operating a power earth auger. Instead of sandals, opt for work boots or quality athletic shoes. Avoid loose clothing and hanging shoelaces that could get caught in the auger. To protect against flying dirt and debris, wear safety goggles and work gloves whenever the unit is running. Operators also should be familiar with the owner’s manual prior to operating a power earth auger. Even if you’re accustomed to operating one, different brands have different safety features, and practices and procedures can vary from model to model. Once you’ve read the owner’s manual, thoroughly inspect the auger for repairs or maintenance needs and to ensure all the necessary parts and pieces are intact. First, identify all instruction and warning labels and be sure they’re properly affixed to the unit. Anyone operating the machine must understand and be able to easily recognize these labels, which should be outlined and explained in the owner’s manual. Be sure all kill switches and wires are undamaged, properly connected and functioning. To ensure the throttle is working properly, start the engine and let it run for a few seconds before releasing the throttle. If the engine is functioning correctly, it will return to idle. Next, check gearboxes and tighten loose bolts. Inspect both the leg pad and handle grips for tears and replace them if necessary. Be sure there are no cracks or other damage to handles or the gearbox housing. Misalignment of the point and blades might cause the auger to vibrate excessively or
Operators need to wear appropriate personal protective gear and follow basic dress code practices when operating a power earth auger.
A torque tube connecting the auger to the chassis-mounted engine prevents injury to the operator by absorbing dangerous kickback.
Carefully ensure points and blades are tight and secure. Misalignment could cause the auger to vibrate excessively during use.

A Challenge of Dangerous Proximities |
A Top-Down Strategy Kimmins hired True-Line specifically because of its capabilities and experience with compact, remotecontrolled Brokk machines. “We often work with Kimmins on concrete cutting projects,” said Matt Alexander, president of True-Line’s Tampa office, “but this job was a little different.” True-Line started by using its saws to cut openings in the sides of the structures. This allowed debris to fall safely inside of each structure as demolition progressed rather than toppling toward the fuel tanks. With parts of the lower walls removed, crews would be able to access the interior and remove debris. The company’s Brokk 180 remote-controlled demolition machine handled the rest of the delicate operation. “The Brokk was powerful enough to break up the tough concrete, yet light and compact enough to rest on each surface and perform the demolition in tight quarters,” Alexander said. “It was the ideal solution.” True-Line equipped the Brokk 180 with a breaker and hoisted it to the top of the first silo with a crane. It sat on top of the structure during much of the roof demolition but remained harnessed to the crane. Once the roof began to drop, the crane suspended the Brokk over the building to complete the demolition of the ceilings below. The Brokk made the job safe by removing all workers from the demolition site, with only one operator needed to control the machine from a safe distance away. Without it, crews with jackhammers would have been hoisted to the roof, where there was significant risk of falling. And, because of Florida’s extreme September temperatures, heat exhaustion or heat stroke were real possibilities.
continued
Once True-Line knocked down the ceilings of all four structures, Kimmins was able to crush what remained of the sides of the structures, again pushing the debris safely into the interior where it could then be removed from the site. The entire project took approximately two months to complete.
from a distance, away from potentially dangerous situations. Since he made that first purchase, Brokks have boosted jobsite safety and efficiency and diversified the company’s workload. Alexander has since added a Brokk 90 and a second Brokk 180 to his fleet, and he says the company often gets work specifically because of their capabilities.
True-Line Meets Brokk
“We would do some demolition work prior to getting the Brokk machine, but that was all done by handheld tools such as jack hammers,” he said. “It wasn’t efficient, and because it put operators in the line of the work, it left the door open for injuries.”
True-Line Coring and Cutting has been using Brokks on a weekly basis for the past 11 years for a variety of projects, from knocking out warehouse walls to allow for additions to removing interior stairwells to demolishing entire buildings from the inside out. But Alexander was a latecomer. Ron Dailey, who runs the True-Line Coring and Cutting office in Nashville, was the first within the company to buy a Brokk. “Ron was calling me constantly, telling me about the Brokk machines, saying that I needed to get one,” Alexander said. He was skeptical, but flew from Tampa to Nashville to watch the Brokk in action. He was impressed, but still hesitant. Then an ad headline caught his eye.
In the majority of its projects, True-Line uses its Brokks in conjunction with its concrete cutting operations.
The Brokk 160 is a powerful, lighter-weight replacement of the Brokk 180.
“Brokk Does The Work of 20 Men With No Workers’ Comp Claims.” “What really appealed to me were the capabilities of the machines without the risk of injuries,” Alexander said. He purchased a Brokk 180, and the machine opened avenues of business that True-Line wasn’t able to safely pursue before. Brokks are ideal for work in confined spaces; they’re small enough to fit into tight spots, and since they’re electric powered there is no potentially harmful exhaust. In addition, operators can run the machines

How to Handle Embezzlement in the Family Business –by Lois Lang
R SERIES SKID LOADERS R 1 9 0 Lift Height 120.5” Rated Capacity 1,900 lbs.
Hearing about embezzlement in a public company rarely shocks anyone, but when it happens in a family business, people are often stunned. “How could he steal from his

own family?” “Doesn’t she know she’s hurting her siblings/ cousins/parents?” As tough and painful as embezzlement is, it’s not as uncommon as many of us would like to think. Sure, the kind of embezzlement that results in jail time is rare, but other levels of it happen daily.

THE NEXT EVOLUTION IN GEHL SKID LOADERS HAS ARRIVED! Building its first skid loader in 1973, Gehl has spent the last four decades enhancing their design. The all-new R Series Skid Loaders combine the reliability and features the industry has come to expect from Gehl with an all-new cab-forward design, emissions certified Tier IV engines and increased auxiliary hydraulic performance.

How could this happen? Many factors lead to embezzlement, including chronic financial strain, a general sense of family entitlement, lack of internal company controls, and the reality or perception of being overworked and underpaid. To make matters worse, often the embezzler doesn’t even know that what he or she is doing is wrong. Here’s an example of how embezzlement can start small and quickly grow: Jim (the business owner’s son) fills up his gas tank once on a Friday and pays for it with the business account, knowing that the miles he drives will be primarily for personal, not business use. He tells himself it’s okay because he has filled the tank on his own some weekends and used “his gas” for business use on Monday and Tuesday. Then he takes a few vacation days and doesn’t record it as paid time off. He picks up gift cards for employee recognition and pockets a few for himself. He knows that Dad pays him less than local competitors, and this is the way he evens it out. He notices other family members treating the business the same way, so it simply becomes the “way we do things around here”—it is their company culture, not embezzlement. The misuse of company assets, time, and money escalates. Soon, Jim adds a non-working family member to payroll, petty cash disappears, one out of ten customer checks are rerouted to Jim’s personal account, and personal items are consistently charged to the business credit card. Eventually, an employee in accounting notices and agonizes about who and when to tell. So while embezzlement starts small and often innocently in a family

business, it can quickly escalate to something big that damages the business, hurts non-family employee morale, and breaks family trust.
Take Action What do you do when you realize a family member is embezzling from the business? Action is obviously required, and taking a cautious, thoughtful, respectful approach is wise. To begin, have a pre-meeting of key leaders, without the suspect family member present, to address the following questions:
1.
Do we have clear, hard, verifiable facts before we assume fault and intent?
2.
Who will be at the meeting to lay the facts out?
3.
Are we going to involve the legal system?
4.
If we continue employment with this family member, do we need to change their job position?
5.
How or will we message this to the rest of the family? To other employees? To the Board of Directors?
6.
How or did the company contribute to this problem?
7.
If the company did, what steps will we take to prevent it in the future?
8.
How or did the family contribute to this problem?
9.
If the family did, what steps will we take, as a family, to prevent it in the future?
10. Has this family member had chronic, known problems with finances?

Are You Treating Employees Like They Don’t Matter?
by Christine Comaford Few leaders set out to make their employees feel like they don’t matter. But Christine Comaford says even the most well meaning among us may be doing it accidentally – and the repercussions can be severe. Of course your employees matter. If they didn’t, you wouldn’t hire them, trust them to do important work, or keep paying them week after week. And if you think about it at all (which you probably don’t), you assume they realize that. It’s only logical. But according to Christine Comaford, you may inadvertently do and say things that make them feel otherwise – and it has little to do with logic. “Mattering is one of the three most primal human needs, along with safety and belonging,” asserts Comaford, author of the New York Times best seller SmartTribes: How Teams Become Brilliant Together (Portfolio/Penguin, June 2013, ISBN: 978-1-5918464-8-2, $26.95, www.SmartTribesBook.com). “When employees are made to feel that they don’t matter, it happens on an emotional level, not an intellectual one. And we now know that emotions, not intellect, drive 90 percent of human behavior. “The really bad news for leaders is that when employees feel they don’t matter, they simply cannot function at their highest level of performance,” she adds. When leaders say or do something that makes employees feel insignificant (and/ or frightened or isolated; the three tend to work together), they revert to the fight/flight/freeze part of the brain – falling into what Comaford calls the “Critter State.” Once in this state, all innovation and collaboration skills fall by the wayside, and every decision boils down to a single question: What will keep me safe right now? Comaford trains and coaches leaders at midsized and Fortune 1000 companies in neuroscience techniques that get people out of their Critter State and into their Smart State, where they have full access to their creativity, problem-solving ability,
September 2013
Six Things You Do (Or Don’t Do) That Make Them Feel Unloved collaboration, and emotional engagement. Under her guidance, clients often see their revenues and profits increase by up to 21 percent annually. Furthermore, 33-42 percent of the entire employee base takes on increased levels of responsibility – without asking for more pay. So what might you be doing that makes employees feel they don’t matter? Comaford reveals six of the top offenders: n You don’t respond to their emails. Sure, you’re busy, and sure, your employees know that – but the Critter State doesn’t spring from the rational part of the brain. Instead of thinking, Oh, the boss will get back to me when he has a moment, they think, He doesn’t like my idea. He doesn’t like me. I don’t matter. “When an employee emails the boss, especially when that email asks for your approval or contains confidential content, he’s putting herself out there,” says Comaford. “Always respond – even if it’s just to say, ‘I need a little time to think about that but I’ll get back to you in a day or two.’” n You don’t give them feedback – positive or negative. When people matter to us, we want them to know they’ve done a good job. If they haven’t done a good job, we want them to know that too, so they can improve. To the employee’s Critter Brain, silence means we don’t care enough to let them know either way. “Hopefully you’re giving feedback in performance evaluations, but give it informally as well,” advises Comaford. “A simple ‘Good job writing that contract’ means a lot. And while it’s less fun to hear ‘You need to work on your (fill in the blank) skills,’ when your employee starts getting better results, he’ll know you cared enough to speak up. “It feels un-PC to make this comparison, but consider how well children respond to being consistently held accountable,” she adds. “Rules and boundaries make people feel loved. It’s true for employees and leaders too. In the Critter Brain, we’re all two-year-olds.”
www.contractorsequipmentdirectory.com | The
n You acknowledge people ONLY when they make mistakes. This makes them feel like a faulty cog that must be repaired to keep the company machine running smoothly. To let them know they matter, make a positive personal connection with employees as often as possible. Be specific about what you like and let them know their unique contribution makes a real difference to the company. “Better yet, make a point of praising them publicly,” says Comaford. “Social rewards are extremely powerful – far more powerful than cash rewards, in fact.” n You don’t celebrate victories. No, just getting paid isn’t reward enough for doing a great job. (Again, a paycheck can feel like oil for the cog – necessary, but not meaningful.) When your group completes an exceptionally complex project, make a point to celebrate the team company-wide. “Team victory celebrations foster a sense of belonging and camaraderie – which go hand in hand with mattering,” notes Comaford. n You inadvertently show favoritism. In many companies, there are certain team members who are perceived as “above the law”. These people tend not to be held accountable for their lack of performance, and they often get the lion’s share of raises or perks, even if they don’t deserve them. And yes, says Comaford, other employees notice. “People think lovability isn’t an issue in business, but I’m here to tell you it is,” she says. “Feeling that others are more ‘loved’ triggers safety, belonging, and mattering issues in those on the outside. Absolute equality may not be possible in an imperfect world, but it’s critical to aim for it.” n You burn them out. Do your employees slog away like slaves, working looong hours, day after day after day? Not only will they feel that you don’t care about their well-being, they’ll burn out. Yes, we all know working long hours often comes with the territory, but no one can sustain such a pace forever.
Contractors Equipment Directory
Comaford points out that this dynamic starts when leaders “self-sacrifice.” Even if you don’t tell employees they have to work until 8 p.m. every night, they see you do it and feel that they’re expected to do so as well. This isn’t good for you or for them. “Sustainability is about creating win-win agreements with ourselves and others,” she asserts. “We all need a good blend of people, activities, and things that excite and energize us in order to balance out those (inevitable) things that drain us. If your employees matter to you, you’ll help them strike that balance.” To many leaders, paying so much attention to what goes on inside employees’ heads is a foreign notion. But Comaford says that when her clients see the astonishing results, they are more than willing to change the way they lead. About the Author: Bill Gates calls her “super high bandwidth.” Bill Clinton has thanked her for “fostering American entrepreneurship.” Newsweek says, “By reputation, Christine is the person you want to partner with.” Christine Comaford is a global thought leader who helps mid-sized and Fortune 1000 companies navigate growth and change, an expert in human behavior and applied neuroscience, and the bestselling author of Rules for Renegades. Her latest book, New York Times best seller SmartTribes: How Teams Become Brilliant Together, was released in June 2013. She is best known for helping CEOs, boards, and investors create predictable revenue, deeply engaged and passionate teams, and highly profitable growth. Her coaching, consulting, and strategies center on increased accountability, communication, and execution. The results? Hundreds of millions of dollars in new revenue and value for her clients. product spotlight» Premium rubber protection available for construction equipment Age-Master #1® rubber protectant is a surface treatment that has protected military, industrial, aviation and space equipment from rubber “dry rot” since 1969. This protection against cracking, loss of strength and flexibility is now available for construction equipment. When painted onto tires, tracks, hoses, belts, bushings, or other rubber parts, it penetrates and dries in minutes, leaving no slick or oily residue. The strength, flexibility and traction properties of rubber are not affected, and this penetrating protection will not peel or wash off.
Construction and Landscape Contractors Live Onsite with Webcast Auction Sept. 10 Capital Recovery Group will be liquidating all of the construction and landscape equipment of Niro Landscape Contractors, Inc. in an Onsite with Webcast Auction on Tuesday, September 10th in Enfield, CT.

The rotating end consists of three nozzle arms that create a centrifugal action that blows air uniformly through the filter membrane. The uniform air distribution cleans the filter without damaging the filter membrane. The air pressure should not exceed 130 psi so the output at the arm nozzles will be 30 to 40 psi. The patent pending Diesel Air Filter Cleaner is designed with replaceable arms. Nozzle extensions give you different roating diameters to clean multiple sizes of filters. Diesel Air Filter Cleaner will help you safely clean your filter and prolong the life of your air filter. A clean filter will increase filter life and reduce engine maintenance while saving up to 5 gallons of fuel per hour. Contact us today to purchase your air filter cleaner by calling 605-796-4288 or visit www.dieselairfiltercleaner.com. ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
Age-Master No.1® was developed by a chemical engineer with over twenty years of experience in the rubber industry, including research and development for major U.S. tire manufacturers. Extensive study and testing culminated in development of this long lasting, cost effective way for protecting rubber from the harmful effects of ozone and ultra violet light associated with aging and weathering, often referred to as "dry rot." Initially used for specialized military applications, Age-Master No.1 has proven effective at extending the service life of a variety of rubber components, reducing replacement costs and down time for savings in many industrial and commercial applications.
Put science to work for you. Rubber “dry rot” is caused by UV rays, oxidation, and ozone in the environment. Age-Master #1® works by adding a chemical barrier to rubber that reacts with these harmful elements before rubber can be damaged. This protection is especially effective for equipment exposed to hot, sunny environments. Benefits include: • Longer service life for lower replacement costs. • Less repair downtime. • Improved readiness of equipment in storage. • Meets Military Specifications. For more information call Chem-Pro, Inc. at 804-744-4869 or visit www.chem-pro.net.

Diesel Air Filter Cleaner WePe Industry is introducing a revolutionary method to clean radial seal filters on diesel equipment. Buy this one tool and clean multiple sizes of air filters—starting at 4 inch diameter. Dirty air filters on diesel combines, tractors and trucks cost machine owners thousands of dollars every year. The cleaner consists of a 29—inch long metal tube that slips through the center of a round cover that’s placed on the top of a filter. A standard 3/8—inch air chuck connects to the top end of the tube and blows compressed air out the bottom through a rotary nozzel with three arms. As the tube is pushed up and down inside the filter, the air nozzels rotate and blow dust out of the filter membrane. The round cover lid is designed to fit any diameter filter. The lid design prevents dust from re-entering the filter because the cover seals tightly to the top of the filter being cleaned. The cover also keeps the center pipe from any lateral movement, protecting your filter.

Other standard MVP 3 V-plow features include the WESTERN FLEET FLEX electrical system for true f leet interchangeability with programmable features like “soft-stop”, “one-touch float” and the SECURITY GUARD™ anti-theft system. The MVP 3 also incorporates the enhanced UltraMount® 2 mounting system with its new one-piece frame design for added strength and durability – providing simple mechanical hook-up with an exclusive rotating pivot bar for accurate drive-in alignment on uneven terrain. out of sight and the Schweiss gate lifts in less than a minute. Schweiss Doors designed it to lift straight up to the high ceiling, up and out of the way when not in use. Five popular patented Schweiss Bifold liftstraps and a 2 h.p. topmounted Schweiss quality electric motor easily and quietly lift the Schweiss Moving Gate.
Government Liquidation (or GL) is the exclusive partner of the U.S. Department of Defense for the sale of their government and military surplus. We are the world’s largest marketplace for authentic surplus, once the property of the U.S. armed forces. Government Liquidation offers surplus items in over 500 categories including: trucks and other vehicles, boats, scrap metal, uniforms and field gear, medical and dental equipment, computer equipment, electronics, machinery and more. Over 10,000 items are added weekly to our inventory, and Goverment Liquidation’s inventory is located in over 200 warehouses across the United States. New, innovative Schweiss Moving Gate gives versatility Schweiss one-piece hydraulic and patented lift strap bifold doors have been on the market for years. Schweiss now has a newcomer on the scene — the Schweiss Moving Gate. The Schweiss Moving Gate still utilizes the patented liftstraps, but instead of folding like a bifold door or outward like a hydraulic door, it lifts straight upward. The gate is a perfect solution for a room divider and cladding materials can come in multiple applications or combined with metal, glass or other materials to your liking.
The owner was absolutely needing a safe gate that would not cause harm to humans or animals in the public facility. He also noted that it was reasonably priced and comparative in price to a pocket door, but much easier to use. He enjoyed working with the professional Schweiss design team to get this designer gate done. The Schweiss gate now virtually gives the animal resort two rooms to work in, or when in the up position, a larger room. The Paw, an exclusive dog and cat resort in Minnesota had Schweiss Doors install a 46 ft. liftstrap moving gate. The gate lifts to the ceiling when open and divides a 96 ft. room in half when down.
A perfect example of this was a first-ofits-kind Schweiss “Gate” built by Schweiss Doors for “The Paw,” an upscale dog and cat resort. The owner of the 27,000 sq. ft. luxury pet resort needed a room divider gate – wall if you wish – to separate a 96 ft. room in half for dog training and handling purposes. Who you gonna call? Schweiss Doors. What made this Schweiss 46 ft. wide, 1,500 lb. multiple-function designer gate different was how Schweiss Doors built it to his personal gate design. He wanted a quiet and smooth operating Schweiss gate that stood about head high with the top half of see through polycarbonate panels and below that utilized steel paneling. This particular Schweiss gate allows humans and animals to see across to the other side of the room without having to raise the Schweiss gate. A push button control on the side wall lifts the Schweiss gate conveniently

VMAC releases the ultimate utility belt: The RAPTAIR-MF Multifunction Diesel Drive VMAC has released a new show-stopper in their RAPTAIR product line: the RAPTAIRMF Multifunction Diesel Drive. This totally self-contained unit combines compressed air, an AC generator, welder, battery charger, booster and hydraulic capability with VMAC’s trademarked Advanced Digital Controls to produce a one-of-a-kind work solution that will save money and time! In addition, this new system maintains the compact dimensions and lighter weight that is unequaled in the multifunction industry. Years of product development, industry experience and feedback from VMAC
customers culminated in the design of the RAPTAIR-MF. Created specifically for the mobile market, the system delivers 45CFM and up to 175 PSI and was designed to address concerns about fuel consumption and emissions while providing the ultimate in job site versatility. Utilizing VMAC’s state-of-the-art Intelligent Digital Controls, the 100% duty cycle RAPTAIR-MF air compressor turns itself on and off in response to air tool demand, contributing significantly to reduced idling and fuel costs as well as a greener environmental profile while still packing enough muscle to power up to a 60 lb. pavement breaker or a 1-1/4” impact wrench. The system’s hydraulic capabilities include a SAE ‘A’ PTO port, 2800RPM output, 35FtLb continuous torque max. The system is powered by a KUBOTA Diesel D902 3-cylinder, naturally aspirated 3600 rpm Tier 4 Final compliant engine. At a mere 570 lbs., the system provides power and versatility in a compact, lightweight package. The compact footprint allows the system to be installed on the top of a service body side pack while still allowing clearance for a sliding roof. Portable Generator Safety According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC): • From 1999 to 2010, nearly 600
generator-related carbon monoxide (CO) deaths have been reported to the CPSC.
VEGETABLES
Try crunchy vegetables as a school snack.
• In recent years, an annual
average of 81 deaths have been caused by CO poisoning from generator use. The
majority of the deaths occurred as a result of using a generator inside a home’s living space, in the basement or in the garage. • One generator produces as
much CO as hundreds of cars.
WHOLE GRAINS Snack on ready-to-eat, whole grain cereals or whole grain crackers.
CO from a generator is deadly and can incapacitate and kill you within minutes.
Safety tips when using portable generators: • Use portable generators outdoors in well-ventilated areas away from all doors, windows, vents, and other building openings to prevent exhaust fumes from entering the home.
FRUITS Vary your fruit choices. Fruits differ in nutrient content.
• Install battery-operated or plug-in (with battery backup) carbon monoxide alarms in your home, following the manufacturer’s instructions.
