Agri-Inject Introduces Automatic Injection Control For Changing Conditions Center pivot corner systems become a valuable asset for their ability to irrigate more acres for a little more investment. Unfortunately, they haven’t worked out as well when it comes to applying fertilizer with a corner system. Too often, fertilizer injection systems cannot respond proportionally to the changing flow conditions as the corner section extends and retracts. However, producers now have a solution in the form of reflex™, an intelligent injection control system from Agri-Inject. When coupled with an Agri-Inject injection pump, reflex provides automatic, responsive control of fertilizer or chemical flow into the system to match changing irrigation conditions. “With reflex technology, the changing water flow rates are sensed automatically and adjustment is immediately made to the rate of the injection pump to ensure consistent, fertilizer dosing,” explains Erik Tribelhorn, CEO of Agri-Inject. “Better yet, it doesn’t matter whether those variable flow rates are the result of a corner span extending, a change in pivot speed, changing flow rate from the pump, a variable-rate pivot or mixed-size zone drip irrigation. The reflex system allows the injection pump to be precisely proportional to the flow of the water.” Tribelhorn says it only takes an aerial photo to see how crop color is affected by a reduction in fertilizer in the areas where a corner system has extended. Those areas later produce weaker, lower yielding crops. Meanwhile, setting up the reflex panel to work properly with virtually any type of irrigation system is a quick and simple process. The touchscreen panel allows the user to configure the system for flow settings, sensor

information, injection pump settings and more. “In less than five minutes, reflex is programmed and ready to work,” Tribelhorn concludes. “Fertigation is still one of the best management practices on an irrigated farm today. The reflex unit simply ensures proportional injection.” For more information call 970-848-5336 or 800-4-INJECT, or visit www.agri-inject.com. ____________________________________

Trimble Irrigate-IQ Solution Now Available in North America Trimble announced recently the availability of the Trimble® Irrigate-IQ™ precision irrigation solution in North America. Along with the North American launch, Trimble also introduced the Connected Farm™ Irrigate app, which provides farmers with real-time status and control of their pivot irrigation systems using a smartphone or tablet.

New EDGE Heavy-Duty High Reach Clipper with Wireless Remote Control The new This EDGE Heavy-Duty High-Reach Clipper is a more rugged-built clipper than the Standard-Duty model also offered. Designed for commercial and rental use with it’s wireless remote, this High-Reach Clipper is made of 5/8-inch high strength steel for maximum durability in the toughest conditions. The powerful rotator is hard-wearing and built stronger with several extra gussets, and features 110 degree rotation for greater maneuverability and clipping at various angles. The mount is also more robust featuring two extra stabilizer bars for a total of five, rendering more stability and control during operation.

The Irrigate-IQ GPS-controlled solution, which is installed on the pivot, enables farmers to remotely control their irrigators via the Internet, including performing variable rate irrigation, and receive reports about where water or fertilizer has been applied. With the solution, farmers can apply the optimal amount of water, fertigation or effluent where needed, which can improve crop quality and yield, while minimizing nutrient and chemical runoff. The solution enables farmers to conserve water use and improve efficiency, reduce energy costs for fuel and electricity, minimize input costs, comply with environmental regulations, and safely dispose of effluent. In addition, Trimble’s brand-agnostic strategy allows farmers to use the solution with most irrigator makes and models. In addition, Trimble introduced the Connected Farm Irrigate app for use on an iPhone, iPad, Android smartphone or tablet. The app allows farmers to see the status of their pivots, including whether they are operating or not operating, in which direction they are traveling, the heading, pump pressure, pivot voltage and type of material being dispersed (water, fertigation, or effluent). It also gives farmers the ability to remotely start or stop their pivots, choose the direction (forward or reverse), turn the pump on or off or switch the type of material being dispersed. This new functionality comes in addition to farmers’ ability to remotely control their irrigators by accessing the Irrigate-IQ software on a desktop or laptop computer, rugged mobile computer or tablet. Although the app is free, farmers will need to purchase

All new Club Car compact XRT™800 and XRT™850 utility transport vehicles (UTVs) manufactured after April will feature powerful new Subaru 14-hp rated, 404-cc, single-cylinder overhead cam engines with electronic fuel injection (EFI). “EFI technology replaced carburetors on automobiles during the 1980s and 1990s, and is not uncommon on larger, more expensive UTVS. But it’s far from industry standard on compact UTVs, largely because of high development and production cost,” says Ross Lyons, product manager of the company’s utility platform. “Yet EFI makes a tremendous difference in performance.” What is EFI? Unlike carburetors, which suction fuel, EFI systems atomize fuel by forcibly pumping it through a small nozzle under high pressure. The engine starts right up, because its engine control unit automatically adjusts the fuel-to-air ratio based on operating conditions. The EFI engines also improve horsepower by 30 percent over the previous engines and deliver best-in-class acceleration, hill-climbing ability, fuel economy, range and peace of mind. from water-based coolants. The coolant can be used for the life of the engine and will never need to be flushed and replaced. This means it lowers the cost of routine maintenance for the machine or vehicle.

Lower Maintenance Costs and Downtime with Evans Waterless Coolant One of the problems with modern engine coolant is the water content, which allows it to boil too easily. Evans Waterless Heavy Duty Coolant fixes this problem. With no water content, it provides a large separation between the operating temperature of the engine and the coolant's high boiling point.

Of course once the trees are down, something needs to be done with them, and the MoreThanAWoodSplitter offers an option. This new design from M&M Engineered Products processes firewood and includes a maintenance-free trimmer. M&M Engineered Products also carries an extensive line of grapple rakes, allowing construction professionals and land owners to remove large amounts of debris easily. All attachments have standard skid steer mounts and can be fully adapted to front-end loaders as needed. Visit www.treeshear.com or call 877-301-1700.

Evans Waterless Heavy Duty Coolant has a boiling point of an incredible 375 degrees Fahrenheit. This means that machines and vehicles can be used at a much higher temperature while the coolant continues to protect the engine. In addition, Evans Waterless Heavy Duty Coolant does not create hotspots or water vapor. This means that there is no unwanted pressure in the engine. Ultimately, this limits downtime, even in hot environments. This also limits the need to stop work and clean the radiator to prevent problems from overboiling with water-based coolants. The radiator can simply be cleaned at the end of the work day, helping productivity to increase. Finally, Evans coolant offers protection from cavitation erosion, corrosion and electrolysis, all of which are risks

Stop Fires Quickly and Effectively with Small, Effective Extinguisher Fires can quickly create problems for the modern agricultural enterprise, but STOP-FYRE provides an effective solution for occasional fires. The small, 12-by-3 inch fire extinguisher uses technology to provide a powerful fire extinguishing product in a small package. What makes STOP-FYRE so effective is the proprietary blend of liquefied gases it contains. The liquefied gases are more effective than dry fire extinguishers commonly used in various industries. The formula is unique to AKE Safety Equipment and utilizes the 25 years of technology and firefighting experience the company has. No one thinks a fire will happen at their facility, yet over 1.3 million American homes and businesses, including agricultural businesses, faced fires in 2012 alone. This lead to $12.4 billion in property damage. Those numbers are staggering and are a rate of one fire every 24 seconds. Many agricultural businesses are still relying on dry chemical fire extinguishers, which need to be regularly shaken, serviced annually and stored upright. Often this does not happen, and the result is a faulty fire extinguisher. Also, these dry chemical extinguishers leave behind a mess and can corrode electronics and other metals. STOP-FYRE eliminates these problems with its proprietary blend. It is easy to use and ready when needed, with no maintenance or service required, so you always have protection when you need it. It also will expand when you spray it to reach flames you cannot see. STOP-FYRE is manufactured by AKE, the only firefighter owned, operated and endorsed fire extinguisher manufacturer in the country. The Better Business Bureau has given AKE their coveted A+ rating, and the National Tractor Pullers Association and Illini State Pullers use STOP-FYRE as their official extinguishers. STOP-FYRE is also the official extinguisher of the NTPA and is often called "The World's Best Fire Extinguisher."

Precise Excavation with Less Man Hours Through Excavating Solutions Up until now excavation has been a two man job. To get the work done, a heavy equipment operator and a site shooter was needed. The shooter would spend the majority of the work day standing holding a grade pole. Unfortunately, even the best operator was dependent on correct work by the site shooter. Excavating Solutions, LLC has a solution for wasted man hours and less than precise excavation and trenching. I Dig Best offers valuable benefits for both construction and agricultural operations. The system offers more than just labor savings. An excavation at the wrong depth, too much or too little is costly. The wrong slope can result in failures. Septic tanks and drainage ditches must be set correctly for proper operation. Excavating Solutions has the answer in an easy-to-use system. Users will achieve the right grade depth, slope and flatness with no grade pole or laser level required. The touch screen is clear and programming the settings is easy. Up to 10 profiles can be stored in the memory and used on different machines. Simply move the system to the equipment in use, including tractors, graders or loaders. I Dig Best Degrees, or machine controls, offer hydraulic controls that provide perfect finishes with the flat bottom of a bucket. The patented valves allow the boom to work in a safe semifloat state. The operator feels the control and motion of the boom while the bucket makes adjustments for precision results.

ing. Equipment operators can dig foundations, footers and ditches with accuracy without ever leaving the cab. Measurement conversion and auto plumb bob are included features. I Dig Best also works with long reach attachments and 4” to 12” trenching buckets. The system is compatible with existing GPS equipment. The equipment is designed to stand up to the harsh temperatures, moisture and vibration of dig sites.

Operators can avoid underground dangers while still trenching and excavating around them. Simply set the “safety zone” and use the optional hydraulic kill feature. I Dig Best works with all backhoes and excavators. To learn more about I Dig Best visit www.excavatingsolutions.com or call 317-210-0220.

Excavating operations are made safer with the ability to sense underground utilities. This x-ray vision feature makes even blind or underwater digging an easier process.

“PROFITS GROW WITH KNIGHTRO”

– Ken E. Knight

The County Fair Is Still the Biggest Show On Earth For farmers and ranchers, the county fair is the biggest show on earth. Nearly 3,000 fairs occupy more than a quarter million acres every year. Maybe the county fair in your county has shrunk in size, but when combined with others across the country, it’s still quite a show. No other industrialized country compares, and no industry is even close to being showcased like that of agriculture. With 4-H being the centerpiece, it embodies the spirit of farming and ranching like none other. Having participated in most of the major livestock shows around the country as either a judge or coach, I can assure you that nothing makes the adrenaline pump like that of competing with your peers at the county level; those that you grew up with, listening to folk-lore of the one that woulda, could-a, should-a won. This is unlike that of the professionals, where strangers meet and compete for perhaps the first time. Here there is that element of money and prestige that flows like honey — a reminder of the county fair in the home economics exhibit building. But under the big top it seems more tarnished and tainted; like that of a “mutual admiration society”. The animal often becomes nothing more then that of a prop for a Stetson and Lizards. There isn’t a Thanksgiving that goes by that I don’t think about the International Livestock Exposition in Chicago. It became tradition for several years to travel the first icy, wintry roads of the season, only to be disappointed with a livestock show so totally out of character for the dirty, windy city. Take this boy back to the country— only to be off to the Fort Worth and Denver stock shows. Then it was on to the Ameri-

can Royal in Kansas City, the home of my ancestors and a taste of limited success. The most unusual of all the shows was the Pacific International in Portland, where flight connections found me paired with a chartered plane of undertakers headed to a funeral directors convention. Thoughts of frightening headline images were racing through my mind: “Ninety-Nine Undertakers And One Bull Shipper Aboard”. The one show of big-time caliber that brought me back home and closer to my roots of the county fair was the North Dakota Winter Show. With visions of grandeur, the headline could have read: “Grand Champion Steer Owned By North Dakota State University And Judged By Ex-Student Of North Dakota State University”. There were such innuendos done in jest; much like that of neighborly county fair jocosity. Yes, the atmosphere between the big shows and the county fairs was quite different. Where there were congenial acquaintances and the fun filled spirit of competition, there was now more emphasis and pressure of fame and name. Where it was once the biggest neighborly event of the year, the big shows took competition to the level of corporate power brokers — where winning at any cost is the price of success! There is probably a place for both — but for me, give me the county fair where I can still wake up to the crowing of a rooster down

at the poultry barn, walk down to the 4-H food booth for breakfast, and help catch a runaway calf after being sprayed with cold water for the first time. All the time, knowing everyone I met along the way. How could you not like your neighbor, as you strolled down the midway holding your sweethearts hand, and feeling the magic of the lights, music and festivities? Over the years 4-H has come to dominate most activities at the county fair. Without a doubt, this has been the biggest win and greatest achievement of the history of the county fair. It has provided a platform for which the youth of America can still compete and learn from both their achievements and mistakes. 4-H was built on the spirit of competitiveness, for which the county fair has been its greatest contributor. It is on this very principle that 4-H and county fairs can point with pride to an unending parade of champions. And, perhaps, even more importantly — the stepping-stone for moving onto the national scene. But before making that big step, realizing that the real champions are those kids hanging on to the end of those lead ropes, knowing that the way to the winners circle comes by the way of experience.

I can assure you that I speak from experience when I express the accolades of 4-H and association with county fairs. It is with the greatest sense of humility that I credit them both with any and all of the successes I’ve enjoyed in life. Though I’ve known my share of failure, it is the experience of those days that gave me direction in life, became the foundation of my vocation, and taught me to always be competitive and to strive to be the best, and to win without always being the winner. May 4-H continue to grow and strengthen the county fairs in the tradition for which it has lasted all these years. The 4-H (HeadHeart-Hands-Health) organization began in rural America in the early 1900’s, about the same time as many of the county fairs began. This was done in conjunction with congress to have youngsters learn about agriculture, forestry, conservation and home economics by participating in these various activities. All have benefited from the association of 4-H and county fairs, but none more then that of livestock. Today, most county fairs have become primarily 4-H livestock shows, for which all of 4-H has benefited from the positive development of individual lives. Leadership and livestock have become the primary benefactors of the biggest show on earth.

Kubota: Power, Versatility and Value

Pony Tales by PONTY The Road Most Traveled To the County Fair Ours was the road most traveled to the county fair, as it was a direct shot from our driveway to the gateway to the fairgrounds. Many a horse knew its way down that two mile stretch of unbridled travel. Likewise there was always that touch of personal involvement that seemed unending.

Spring Is In the Air… And So Are the Pathogens

By Kelly and Leah Daniels Kelly and Leah live on an acreage in north central Iowa and work with farmers and clients across the country.

We’ve had the pleasure of working with farmers – mostly livestock producers – for many years and we recently began to notice something interesting: Farmers like to ask a lot of

Not to be a “Debbie Downer” but it’s time to clear the air. The air in your barns, that is. When it comes to confined animal production, air quality is a top priority. Without a constant exchange of fresh air, the animals are breathing in dust particles and, with them, any bacteria or virus lucky enough to hitch a ride. That puts stress

Health – If air quality is bad, the health status of your herd or flock is compromised. Even if you’re not seeing acute clinical symptoms of disease, low-level respiratory stress impacts the animal’s ability to grow and thrive.

Technology is a wonderful thing and today’s livestock producers have some awesome tools to help manage what happens in the barn. However, while we’d all like to be able to set the electronic controllers at the ideal levels and walk away, even the best systems are not a substitute for human observation. Your eyes, ears and nose can tell you whether the air in a barn is right. If it doesn’t smell or look healthy to you or if you’re hearing animals coughing or wheezing, chances are something’s off.

from one brand or another. If it’s right for the farmer, it’s right for Hedgewood.

Q

I’ve seen pictures of poultry barns that are really dusty, but I don’t see a lot of dust in the air in my hog barn. I shouldn’t have to worry about dust then, right?

The work that U.S. farmers do helps people around the world live healthier and safer lives than ever before. We feel blessed to be able to work in agriculture every day and to be able to use our skills in keeping agriculture strong. – Kelly and Leah

Q

That sounds interesting, but I hate to invest in new technology.

A

Actually, EPI has been used for many years now in restaurants, bars and other establishments to clean the air of smoke, dust and airborne vapors created by cooking. EPI is now in use by some of the biggest pork and poultry producers because it has been proven to work, is based on sound science and has a great return-on-investment. There’s a lot to know about how improving air quality can make your operation run better. If you have questions, please call us at 515-851-9194 or email kelly@hedgewoodequipment.com. dust in a hog barn, it’s there… along with vaporized moisture which can also carry germs. One company we work with uses electrostatic particle ionization (EPI) to remove airborne particulates and it’s showing great results. This is especially important when you consider that the University of Minnesota recently determined that the porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDv) now plaguing the pork industry can be transmitted in the air as well as through direct contact. No one knows yet how to stop the spread of PEDv, but air quality could be part of the puzzle.

How to Get Barn-Quality Hay Without the Barn

Wrap your bales with John Deere B-Wrap*. It’s the alternative to indoor storage. B-Wrap works in your John Deere baler much like net wrap. Yet it protects bales almost like they were stored indoors — shedding rain, snow, and helping resist ground moisture. Storage losses are dramatically reduced, especially when compared to net wrap bales stored outdoors over winter. Learn more at AMBRACO. com, or visit your John Deere dealer.

t Keeping the Family Farm in the Family Michael Baron is the owner of Great Plains Diversified Services, Inc. and is a regular contributor to the "Farm And Livestock Directory". Involved in farm estate planning for more than thirty years, Michael Baron is well-versed in farm income taxation, estate taxation, retirement planning, transition planning, oil and gas estate issues, and all other issues facing the family farm, including family dynamics. Presented in a comprehensive, down-to-earth 'question and answer" format, the topics addressed in this column talk about the many aspects of estate planning – and how to 'Keep the Family Farm in the Family'.

Contact Michael Baron at 800-373-4078 or email keepthefamilyfarm@gmail.com, or visit www.keepthefamilyfarm.com. View past columns Michael has written in the 'Country Lifestyle' section at www.farmandlivestockdirectory.com.

Who Should Be In Charge of Your Assets After You Die? Dear Michael:

Oil income is another slippery slope – pardon the pun. Here you have an asset that does nothing but push out cash and this cash gets deposited in a main account until it is distributed to who you want to receive this money. Right now this is your account and you make the decisions.

We are getting up in years and we have a large farm – rented out – and none of our children are interested in farming. We are old enough now to have married grandchildren and realize how far and wide our estate might be spread someday with children, grandchildren and spouses, and now great grandchildren. We were also fortunate enough to have income from oil and we have been sharing this with our children, who in turn, have been sharing with their children. Right now, we are in charge of the farm income and the oil income. But who do we pass this torch onto when we are gone? It keeps me up at night thinking about all the possible issues after we die.

What happens when this cash account passes on to the next generation? Who will be in charge of making these decisions? Who can I trust to handle this much money without being tempted?

~ Up All Night

Dear Up All Night:

Obviously, you two have lived a long and interesting life. How wonderful to see your union leading to children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. I'm sure you have stories to tell of times where you could barely make ends meet, and you had to do extraordinary things in order to keep family and farm together. Most success stories, like yours, have many instances where the 'average' person would have given up, but you persevered and it's all led to this. For many people who have crossed the threshold of security with assets such as yours, this has led to new worries. Who do we leave in charge of this? Who do we trust will make objective decisions? How can we make certain our wishes are followed after our deaths? The other thing to consider here are the class of assets. You have basically two types – land and oil income.

JULY 2014

Most people are realizing farmland has been one of the finest investments to acquire and own over the last thirty years. It's an asset that produces six to seven percent income and lately has had capital growth of fifteen to twenty percent per year. Ultimately, in our paper world, people have finally realized paper profits and gains can disappear, while land survives. As such, people would like to make certain this land doesn't get mishandled in the future. It's awfully hard to explain to a thirty-five year old heir that 'Yes, you can sell the quarter for four hundred thousand, but the twenty thousand a year in income you are receiving is far, far better than anything you can do with the money'. This heir is thinking 'I can buy this, and buy that, and have this, and I can't have all those things unless I get the whole four hundred thousand'. That's true, but ten years from now, my guess is all of the things he buys today will be gone and he'll have lost everything – not to mention the capital gains and income he lost on the land itself.

8 0 0 - 6 2 2 - 8 8 3 6 | The E A STE R N FA R M a n d LI VE STO C K DI R E CTO RY |

If I name a child as a successor and put them in charge of all of this income, there is no oversight body who watches over this child or children to make certain they are making the proper decisions with this cash. There are no 'will' police who run around checking to make sure your successors are doing what they are supposed to be doing. When you put this much cash into the hands of a select few and charge them with the responsibility of doling out this money over years and years, without any oversight on the operation, one of three things is going to happen. Either the child or children does everything perfectly, but someone is disappointed they are not in charge and feel things could be done 'better' – and the fight is on. Two, the child who is in charge starts noticing all of this cash floating in and out with no checks and balances or people looking over their shoulder, and gives into temptation. Three, the child or children you leave in charge either decide to quit, become unable to perform these duties or die – leaving these duties to someone else – someone else you may not like handling these duties. Whether or not you have farm and oil income or just valuable farmland you don't want sold, you may want to consider a Legacy trust to handle your assets. In the next column, I'll cover some of the in's and out's of such a trust and some ideas of who should be left in charge of this trust after your death.

Irma Harding Recipe Book Brings New Life To Food Preservation Irma Harding® is back in the kitchen with the new recipe book Canning, Pickling & Freezing with Irma Harding. In this recipe book, Irma Harding leads readers through more than 250 pages of step-by-step instructions on preserving fresh foods. The recipe book explains the basics of canning, pickling and freezing, in addition to smoking and curing fresh fruits, vegetables and meats. “This recipe book captures the spirit of what Irma Harding was created to do – educate people on freezing and preserving foods for future use,” says Sarah Pickett, Case IH Licensing & Merchandising Manager. “In the past, canning, pickling and freezing were used out of necessity. Today, there’s a renewed interest in these “old-fashioned” food preservation techniques. This recipe book has something to offer everyone, from the experienced canner to a beginner.”

Published by Octane Press, the recipe book features more than 100 color images and drawings that bring food preservation into the modern era. Authored by Marilyn McCray, the recipe book also features a foreword by The New York Times best-selling author Michael Perry. An Irma Harding calendar will follow the recipe book.

◆ Irma Harding brings new life to food preservation in her very own recipe book. In 1947, International Harvester developed refrigerator and freezer lines and created Irma Harding as the character spokeswoman. Irma promoted the products to U.S. farm women. International Harvester hired five home economists to answer inquiries and conduct cooking experiments in company kitchens on Irma’s behalf. In addition, 70 home economists and saleswomen were hired throughout the U.S. to travel regionally and educate homemakers of the day about freezing and preserving food.

FARM and RANCH LIFE By Dr. Michael R. Rosmann Dr. Michael R. Rosmann brings the perspective of a farmer in “Farm And Ranch Life”. Dr. Rosmann grew up on a mixed grain and livestock farm in Western Iowa where he experienced enjoyable hard work and 4-H, and witnessed the stresses that accompany farming and farm life. Dr. Rosmann developed the first mental health response in Iowa to the Farm Crisis of the 1980s. In 2001, Dr. Rosmann, along with partners in seven states, founded the nonprofit network, AgriWellness Inc. AgriWellness conducted research and provided counseling services to farm people. It became clearer that a specialized field – agricultural behavioral health – was needed to respond to the unique problems experienced by farmers, ranchers and others involved in agriculture.

Email Dr. Rosmann at mike@agriwellness.org, or visit his website at www.agbehavioralhealth.com. You can call him at his office in Harlan, Iowa at 712-235-6100.

Stress Leads To Brain And Genetic Changes All of us are subjected to stress. Adaptations to stress that contribute to survival can become part of our heritable genetic material, as well as adaptations that detract from survival over multiple generations.

A small but growing body of research literature indicates that stress can produce changes not only in brain functioning, but also in genetic proclivities passed along to future generations. These scientific findings hold important implications for our physical and behavioral health, and that of our descendants. A process called methylation changes the expression of DNA. Chemical structures called methyl enzymes increase in response to stressful events and can silence genes from working properly. Evidence suggests early life stresses may have more impact on heritability than later life stresses. DNA, which is the abbreviation for deoxyribonucleic acid, is the hereditary material in humans and nearly all organisms. The findings are in the early stages of reaching conclusive scientific certainty. Duke University biochemists Dr. Robert Lefkowitz and Makoto Hara demonstrated that increasing amounts of stress can progressively damage DNA expression and increase the risk for developing cancer and turning hair gray. In a December 27, 2013 article for the website, www.ClearYourStress.com, Karl McDonald cited additional evidence that chronic stress is the culprit, causing psychological and physiological distress that triggers a drop in a key tumor suppression antigen, called p53. A more recent study was reported last month by the New York Association of Psychiatric Rehabilitation Services. The research was conducted by a team of scientists at Johns Hopkins University, led by Richard Lee, Ph.D. They found that high levels of corticosteroids, which are released into the blood by severe stress, are associated with changes in brain functions which influence our behaviors, and changes in the DNA methylation of the human genome site, Fkbp5. In other words, stress can change brain chemistry and behavior, and the genetic information passed along to offspring. Corticosteroid levels are a good indication of exposure to stress: the higher the cortisol, the greater the stress. See the Farm and Ranch Life column in the Country Lifestyle section at www. farmandlivestock.com released on June 16, 2012 JULY 2014

(PTSD: A Survival Mechanism Gone Awry) for additional information about how the human body responds to stress. Many environmental toxins are known to produce changes in behavior and DNA expression. For example, habitual heavy alcohol ingestion, which is toxic, not only creates a craving for more of the substance and eventually dulls brain functions, but it also increases the likelihood that offspring of the alcohol abuser will develop alcohol addiction.

“I write the Farm and Ranch Life articles to help us manage ourselves positively to survive and thrive. It is important for agricultural producers to understand available scientific research that helps us figure out how we work and what we can do to enhance our survival. “ – Dr. Michael Rosmann While exposures to environmental toxins are widely suspected as an increasing cause of death, the new information accumulating about stress opens a further area for scientific exploration: how stress changes brain chemistry and our genetic material. A new field, behavioral epigenetics, examines how our experiences affect our genetic expression. It is not fully known how DNA changes, even though the research about methylation offers promising direction. It is clear that almost all organic life forms have adaptive capacities and that these capacities can contribute to survival or extinction.

If we didn’t have the capacity to incorporate beneficial DNA changes that contribute to survival, humans would have disappeared as a species long ago. Since stress is a normal part of life, and we can adapt, why worry about managing stress? The answer is that chronic stress and severe acute stress, such as a nonfatal but life-threatening event, lessen our capacity to survive. I write the Farm and Ranch Life articles to help us manage ourselves positively to survive and thrive. It is important for agricultural producers to understand available scientific research that helps us figure out how we work and what we can do to enhance our survival. We need to know what steps to take to reduce exposures to environmental toxins. We can improve our knowledge about beneficial methods of reducing the body chemicals associated with fright and stress—adrenalin and cortisol. Okay, I know this article is pretty technical, but it is foundational to knowing why I try to make behavioral health more understandable to those who engage in the wonderfully lifeenhancing activities of growing food and fiber, some of our most basic necessities for life. Over the next few months I will say more about what we can do to manage ourselves and our choices. This column is about improving our lives as agricultural producers. I will tackle difficult topics, such as what is known about various threats to agriculturalists’ behavioral health and physical well-being. I will draw on research findings and personal observations. I have several bright behavioral health and epigenetics scientists who have promised to help me with topics that push the borders of my expertise. Stay tuned and let me know how you feel about what I am trying to accomplish. I always appreciate feedback.

Humans are one of the most complex life forms. We have accrued enormous adaptations over time.

Pennywise

Another Tool in the Fine Art of Money Management

By Paula Vogelgesang Email: Pennywise at pennywise@gwtc.net.

Cutting Cooling Costs The full brunt of summer is once more upon us. Out here in the ‘hinterlands’ where I live, the heat in the Badlands is scorching for days on end. There aren’t many places to escape from the heat so the cattle seek the coolness of the cedar breaks and creeks whenever possible along with the other wild critters such as deer, turkeys, rabbits, etc. The old timer’s used to call it ‘shading up’ during the heat of the day and then every moving thing comes out towards evening to feed, munching on gardens and yards if possible! For us humans, it’s a different story. Thankfully, we have many advantages over those who homesteaded here in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. No electricity, running water, insulated houses, etc. As a child I lived in a home with no air conditioning–not even a fan for many years and we learned how to cope. Work was done early in the mornings and late in the afternoons when it cooled down some. We had a basement and the kids in the family plus a lot of neighbor kids spent the hot afternoons resting on old blankets on the cool cement floor. Some took naps, some read or played a game and when it cooled off outside, we went back to work mowing weeds, working in gardens and flowerbeds. Some did their house painting or other repairs early and late. It was called ‘adjusting’. We’ve gotten so spoiled over the last 40 years or so with all of the ‘doodads’ and gadgets that we all take pretty much for granted. Running water in the house along with the indoor plumbing, air conditioning, big box fans, instant hot water, electric stoves and microwaves, automatic washers and dryers, computers, ‘smart’ cell phones, iPads, GPS in the vehicles–luxuries not to be thought of just a little over 100 years ago. My biggest concern is that all of this is going to come to a screeching halt when the electric bills go through the roof, become impossible to keep paid up. Folks won’t really know how to cope; conservation will be the ‘name of the game’. The production of cool air for our homes takes a good chunk of the yearly utility bill, and for some, cooling costs more than heating for the winter so it only makes ‘cents’ to get the maximum use from every bit of energy we use. One can save a good bit of money by taking advantage of natural cooling in the evenings by opening windows and doors, shutting things up before bedtime and then pulling shades or draperies early in the morning to keep the cool air in and the heat out as long as possible.

recommended. Sometimes, you can wash the big filters really well with a garden hose and get another year’s use from each filter. If you have a window unit or are planning to purchase one, try to situate it on the north side of the house so it doesn’t have to work so hard. It is recommended that you only set the thermostat to just 20 degrees cooler than the outside temperature, and then use a box fan to move the air around the rooms. We have an attic fan and it really helps keep the hot air out of the upper part of the house. It comes on at 98 degrees and keeps that super-heated air out of the attic. We’ve also installed ceiling fans in the bedrooms to move the cooler air around during the night. To save even more money, I do my laundry at night. The electric rates are usually cheaper during the ‘off hours’ when the peak demand is not so severe. I hang my clothes out at night and they are always dry by early morning (and I avoid the bird droppings because the birds are sleeping at night and don’t ‘bomb’ the clothes if I get out early enough!) Teach the children to turn off the lights when they leave a room or even install timers on closet switches, storage shed and garage lights to save a few dollars. It does add up over time and the savings you have achieved at the end of the summer will more than surprise you. Cutting your energy bills isn’t all that difficult if a bit of common sense is used. If the kids don’t do their part, you can do what one subscriber did: Her son was continually leaving lights on, doors open with the air conditioner running so she made him pay the light bill for just one month from his summer’s wages. It took most of the paycheck to pay just one light bill and she said, “Once was enough. He has become the king of energy savings!”

Money & Time-Saving Tips from Pennywise:

Home Made Bug Traps, Free Tomato Stakes, What to do With All Those Cucumbers and More! TREE BUG TRAPS In some garden centers there are these little gadgets called ‘sticky traps’. They are specific to certain kinds of bug that feed on fruit trees and certain garden plants, especially the blossoms. A reader wrote to cut some yellow plastic into strips, coat them with plain petroleum jelly and then hang the strips in the fruit trees to attract the critters. I was pretty skeptical so I cut some strips from an old yellow oil jug, spread on the petroleum jelly and hung them from the branches with some pieces of twine I ran through holes punched in one end. It worked! There is some kind of moth that lays eggs on the developing fruit and the worms eat holes in the apples. Not any more–those yellow chunks of plastic work wonders and are almost free.

STINKY SNEAKERS Smelly sneakers (tennis shoes) can be deodorized by simply inserting a used dryer sheet in each shoe overnight. (Tip submitted by BT, MT)

PET HAIR REMOVER If the household cat or dog leaves hair on your good furniture, simply rub over the area with a used dryer sheet. It will attract the hair so it can be more easily removed. (Tip submitted by LW, SD)

WEED FREE GARDEN PATHS If you lay down a few sheets of thick cardboard where your garden paths need to be and then cover that with some old hay or compost, the weeds can’t grow through the cardboard and the paths are fairly weed-free all summer. Sometimes it takes a couple of years for the cardboard to completely decompose back into the soil. (Tip submitted by MN, WY) (Pennywise says: I have used old newspapers with

TOMATO STAKES

OIL DRIBBLE CATCHER

I use old dead branches off of my trees for my tomato stakes/cages. I just push the big end of the branches into the soil around the tomato plants and then tie around them with some narrow strips of polyester fabric. Some of it I’ve used for several years and it seems to be in pretty good shape yet! I will put one or two stakes by each plant and then add more if needed. I don’t see much sense in buying something when I already have something FREE that works just as well (it may not look quite as good as those fancy metal cages, but free is good!) (Tip submitted by AS, OR)

If you have a vehicle with a small oil leak and don’t want

CUCUMBER CHIPS

EMERGENCY HAND CLEANER

If the cucumber patch is producing overtime and you want to preserve them without pickling, try drying them. Just slice the cucumbers and dry the slices in your dehydrator at a fairly low temperature, about 110 – 118º until nice and crisp. They make a good snack for the kids and don’t need any additional salt as the natural salt in the vegetable comes out in the drying process. (Tip submitted by AC, WY)

If you don’t have any hand cleaner in the shop, try using

HANDY SCRUBBER

way down in the pores of your hands and staining them.

To make a steel wool scrubber for woodworking or metal sanding, stuff some steel wool in a chunk of old radiator hose or something on that order. The rubber keeps your hands from getting beat up and the steel wool can do its work. To replace it, just poke a drill bit or a piece of doweling in the end of the hose to clear out the old piece and then insert a new wad. (Tip submitted by MB, VA)

a mess on the garage floor, just line a flat cardboard box with some aluminum foil, put in some cheap cat litter and slid the box under the drip for overnight or until you can get the leak stopped. It should absorb the most of the oil, and it’s cheap too!)

t livestock history

Recalling the story of Paclamar Astronaut, the World-famous Holstein Bull Fifty years ago this year, on a warm, hazy June day in Maryland, nine dairy farmers pooled their limited resources and made international livestock history. Under the leadership of veteran Maryland dairyman, W.I. “Billy” King, a loose “syndicate” of producers agreed to attempt to purchase a homely Holstein bull calf, whose official registered name was Paclamar Astronaut, after the awakening space age. The knowledgeable dairy producers were well aware of the gangling calf’s mother, Harborcrest Rose Milly, a widely noted All-American cow with a sensational dairy record. Her maternal brother had recently sold for $10,000, and she had just been written up in the industry’s Holstein World magazine as one of the breed’s most outstanding cows. She was housed at prestigious 1,200-acre Paclamar Farms in Colorado, owner of one of the nation’s finest dairy herds. The magazine article included a note that she had recently given birth to a son. It just so happened that the national Holstein association convention was meeting that June, 1964 in Washington, D.C. Noted Maryland dairyman, auctioneer, and pedigree expert, Doty Remsburg, was tasked with arranging and managing a national cow sale to coincide with the convention. He chose the fairgrounds at nearby Gaithersburg, MD, home to the Montgomery County Fair, and well situated with excellent sale facilities. Billy King was charged with making selections for the sale. Conferring with fellow dairymen, including Marlin Hoff and Jack King, who had earlier helped judge Milly, he encouraged Paclamar Farms to send her five-month old bull calf to the national sale. He then had an idea

– invite dairy colleagues to form a cooperative “syndicate” to purchase the bull calf for future stud service. It was thought that such an animal from a proven mother could bring up to $30,000. He suggested that potential syndicate members each contribute $3,000 toward such a purchase. That was a significant sum for dairy farmers in 1964. “That was about one month’s milk check for us, so we declined,” one dairy producer said. “I was just out of college, and couldn’t come up with that much money,” another one added. But Billy King persisted, and finally signed up nine dairy producers, all but one from Maryland, plus the Herman Gabbert family of White Plains Farm in South Carolina. Each finally agreed to provide up to $1,500. Hundreds of persons jammed the gaily decorated fairgrounds pavilion that June day. In came Astronaut. Dairy experts in attendance were appalled. The bull calf was frail, almost sickly. One veteran dairyman said that the gangly animal was “not exceptionally strong, which kept him from smoothing up.” Most commercial bull studs were present, as were prominent dairy producers and investors. They literally turned their backs, none offered a bid, including Curtiss Breeding Service, one of the nation’s largest bull studs, that had recently leased Astronaut’s sire. Billy King’s syndicate was in from the beginning, but bidding went slowly. Finally, Washington lawyer A.H. Paul, a fun-loving Holstein breeder, started bidding,

walking around the ring to get the crowd’s attention. “Get the bull!” Billy King’s father, Lawson, finally directed. For some reason, A.H. Paul suddenly stopped bidding, and the auctioneer banged the gavel at $9,000. The Billy King syndicate had its bull calf, and each member was in for $1,000. Astronaut was taken to the Lawson King family’s 1,000-acre farm near Gaithersburg, to be fed and cared-for until his future could be worked out. The syndicate began negotiating with leading bull studs, including Curtiss, who had turned down the opportunity to bid at the sale. Finally, Curtiss agreed to house Astronaut at their Cary, Illinois headquarters, and would collect and distribute the bull’s semen. A contract was signed, whereas Curtiss would determine the price of each ampule of semen to be sold, as well as the percentage of the profits to be sent to each syndicate member. The year-old Astronaut was sent to Illinois after more than six months in Maryland. Paclamar Astronaut in his prime: one and a quarter tons of championship Holstein bull. sification) dairy cow with 1,000 pounds of butterfat in one year. As Milly went on to earn further All-American and All-Time All-American triumphs, more and more dairymen stepped up to buy her bull calf’s semen. They saw a unique genetic trend that combined the best style of his sire, Thonyma Ormsby Senator with the dairyness of his mother, Harborcrest Rose Milly. It wasn’t long before the “Astronaut pattern” began to fully emerge in international dairy breeding circles. Word got around that Astronaut’s daughters “made milk like they invented it.” They exhibited a rare blend of strength and style and udder quality that would make Astronaut famous. By 1969, Astronaut became the youngest bull ever (five years old) to earn a Gold Medal through artificial insemination. Despite Curtiss’ reservations, they had leased probably the most outstanding dairy bull of his era. So famous was this once “ugly duckling,” that he made the front page of the Wall Street Journal, as well as both the AP and UPI wire services during the summer of 1976. He is the only Holstein ever to appear three times on the cover of Holstein World magazine. Back in Maryland and South Carolina, the dairymen members of the Astronaut syndicate regularly stopped by their rural mailboxes to pick up their monthly checks from Curtiss. One member admitted that his wife used a check to install a family swimming pool. Another made a down-payment on a larger farm. Still another put a large framed picture of Astronaut on his farmhouse kitchen wall to pay homage to the bull that became a welcome blessing to a small group of hardpressed dairy producers.

bloodlines of the world’s Holstein dairy herds, and was reported to return an estimated $1,358,000 for each of his nine original investors from more than 108,000 calves produced through the Curtiss breeding program.

By the time of Astronaut’s death in December, 1978, the 2,670-pound bull had produced over $12 million worth of semen, produced more than 50,000 registered daughters (Astromates), greatly improved the
