Feature-loaded, and innovative, the Nitro spreads manure evenly and efficiently. The variable speed, hydraulically driven apron chain feeds fast-moving vertical beaters that 'bite' the load and throw it into the field with remarkable consistency, ensuring a finely spread application every time. The Nitro Spreader comes in three optimal sizes for your farm operation. With heaped cubic foot capacities of 392, 524, and 693,

Nitro Spreaders ensure that you can move and spread manure both efficiently and effectively. Standard Nitro features ensure a premium spreader in all models. The 450, 600, and 750 all feature the same, effective vertical beater configuration, the same guillotine end gate and the same front stone guard to protect the driver.

Standard Features that "Set the Standard" The brute strength of the Nitro's apron chain system sets it apart. Truly heavy-duty, the chain and sprocket are designed to move

Repurposing for Green:

From Dilapidated Corn Silo to Hyper Energy Efficient and Resilient Office TF Forming Systems latest project is the construction of an environmentally green, highly energy efficient and structurally resilient home/office out of a dilapidated old corn silo. Located in Mount City, MO, local grain farmer JW Trimmer is taking a former corn silo and transforming it into the ultimate home/office. The new building will be constructed out of Vertical Insulated Concrete Forms from TF Forming Systems. “We were looking for an energy efficient material and concept,” Trimmer explained. “We compared ICF to double stud to highly insulated wall to a sip type panel…what we actually wanted to do with the radius of the corn silo is why we chose TF. TF’s vertical design looked the best option for doing the radius." Steve Graham with Graham Construction was the installer on the project. This was the first building he had completed where an existing structure was repurposed and four radius walls were part of the design. “We were impressed with the ease of being able to create the perfect radius,” said Graham. “Additionally, with this system, the homeowner should experience a lower utility bill and the structural integrity of the home, being that the walls are 8-inches and the helix added, will offer them safety for years to come.” “The corn silo was a well-built structure and unique, not too many of them were built this way,” Trimmer says. “However, it no longer served a useful purpose as a corn elevator. We were looking for something that it could be repurposed into. The farm had grown so we needed an office space.”

Hyper Energy Efficiency JW Trimmer owns more than 200 acres of farmland in the small Northeastern town of Mound City. Located near Nebraska where winter temperatures can be extreme, Trimmer intends to use geothermal energy to heat the structure. He will also tie in the excess heat from the wood-fired boiler to heat the water in the radiant A 2

floor system to heat the lower level. Because of the usage of natural energy, coupled with the concrete walls and insulation on both sides of his walls, he will reduce his energy bills by well over 50 percent.

The ear corn elevator silo before construction.

“Our house is smaller than this structure, but we are hoping with the energy efficient walls and the design aspects of the building, the bills will be comparable to a space half its size,” Trimmer says.

Resilient and Disaster Resistant The new building, a hybrid of the existing structure and the new structure, will result in a state-of-the-art building with walls engineered to withstand 250 mph winds thanks to the slow curing process accomplished with a TF concrete wall and addition of Helix fibers to the concrete mix. “We get intense storms and high winds. We get tornadoes that go through the area,” Trimmer says. “I was looking at a long-term structure; something that would withstand extreme weather conditions and stand for a considerable period of time.”

Inside wall of one of the radius corners.

“This is a testament to the unique capabilities our wall systems offer,” says Kirk Brown, TF Forming Systems’ CEO. “Not only do we offer solid and affordable ways to be resilient and energy efficient, but we give building owner’s the opportunity to incorporate our wall systems into existingstructures. Once again the vertical design of our system proves that we are architecturally-friendly for every application.” The new structure will offer 4900 square feet of space that will be used for offices, a conference room, full kitchen and guest bedrooms and living quarters. Trimmer hopes to have the building complete by April 2013. For more information, visit www. tfsystem.com.

Kinze Advises Planter Prep During Winter Months The people at Kinze® Manufacturing, Inc. understand the urgency to get seed in the ground shortly after the planting window opens. Because many Kinze employees also farm, they know how critical proper planter maintenance is to ensuring maximum productivity and efficiency during this short time.

While it’s very important for farmers to make sure their planter is mechanically sound, it’s also important to check the electronics and technology on today’s planters. “The electronics on your planter affect productivity and bottom line, just like the nuts and bolts,” says Phil Jennings, Kinze Manufacturing service manager. After farmers check their planter’s mechanics, there is a separate checklist of items they should check regarding their monitors and technology. For farmers to ensure their planter monitor is running properly, Jennings recommends three basic areas to check: display operation, display data/software and the planter components.

Mechanics and electronics both affect productivity and the bottom line.

Checking Electronics When checking planter electronics, start in the cab. Plug in the display and turn it on. Farmers should take their time inspecting things like the main power connections and relays, harness routings through doors and windows, and GPS connections. Scroll through the different operation screens to make sure that all of the sensors and modules register on the display as they should. Next, farmers should check to be certain they are running the latest version of the software in their display. Updates often become available more than once a year. Staying up-to-date gives the operator solutions that may apply to more than just the planting season. What about the information or applied data that is still in the display’s memory from last season? Make a copy and purge unnecessary files from the display. Doing the same for old products and out of date field information can help avoid confusion when navigating through the display later. Now is the time to enter new data; farmers can start plugging in the new seed variety numbers, field changes or implement information.

Last, farmers need to inspect the planter components. Carefully follow the wiring harness routing from hitch pin to seed tube. Stay focused on any areas that move when the machine is folded and around the row unit chains and parallel arms. Be sure to add new tie straps or guarding where necessary. The culmination of this process should be a full function system check. Planters equipped with a hydraulic drive should be run in the shop allowing farmers to verify that the row unit clutches and sectional controls are working as they should. No matter how much technology is added to the planter, it is still the operator’s responsibility to verify that seed monitor and control systems are working properly. Jennings always suggests a true field check after farmers make any adjustments to the planter. “I recommend a full 1/1000th acre field check when any settings or adjustments change,” says Jennings. “The extra 15 minutes it takes to dig up those seeds is an inexpensive insurance policy.” If these tasks are performed before planting, it ensures that farmers will be ready to plant when weather permits.

ÂŤInnovations in Equipment

by Renae B. Vander Schaaf

No post holes needed! CLAREMORE, OK – The classic saying that necessity is the mother of invention has been proven true once again. Just what is the most onerous task when putting in fence? Most folks would agree that digging postholes wins hands-down. But you can't have a fence without posts, or can you? Dennis Arden of Claremore, Oklahoma, took it upon himself to answer that challenge. He had spent many years digging postholes around his own ranch and for others. If fencing needed to be done, friends would call him. If he had a dime for every posthole he dug, he would be a wealthy man. According to Arden, fencing was a hobby, something he liked doing. Except for one thing, digging post holes was, well, definitely not something he enjoyed. The more he dug, the more he knew there had to be a better way. Then one day, he had a heart attack while digging a post hole. He now had his mandate, he needed to design a fence that did not require digging postholes. It became his passion to build a reliable fence, capable of working in many different situations, and easy to maintain. Recollecting different fencing systems, he kept coming back to the Colorado Split Rail fence. Made of wood, old timers would piece the fence together, stacking the ends, zig-zagging the log fence so that it stood. Arden took that idea, modernized the design utilizing today's material A 6

he has revolutionized how fencing can be done. He spent six years perfecting it and getting the patent. ArdenX has been on the market for two and half years. Arden X's freestanding fencing is completely USA designed, made in the USA of USA 3/16 inch square carbon steel tube. Designed to be maintenance free with an estimated life of forty plus years. The rugged, steel X post, has a solid horizontal bar in the X that gives the fence stability. Any type of wire, mesh or fencing panel material works in the framework-barbed wire, electric wire, netting, wood, vinyl, panels, any fencing material. Baird Lobree, President of ArdenX said Mr. Arden's passion to get it right has put a common-sense fence on the market that has limitless possibilities and will work in the most challenging terrain. "ArdenX has adjustable feet," said Lobree. "The fact that is self-leveling is a huge benefit. It works on hilly, sloped, and ungraded land, in river beds." Vertical and swivel horizontal adjustments can be made at each side of X-post. "ArdenX's strength is due to physics. Remember how in school they taught you that gravity was the strongest force on earth, said Lobree. A bull can run into it, the fence does not give." The combination of gravity plus the ArdenX legs, the self-leveling and articulating section design, weight and physical properties of the car-

bon steel make it strong. It is not possible to pick-up any single section of the fence once the bolts and wires are strung and tightened as it becomes one super-strong, un-movable unit. Adjustable it works for any livestock. Agricultural heights adjust from four to eight feet, simply by adjusting the feet. ArdenX also manufactures fencing for the military and industrial industries. The fact no postholes are needed saves first on initial labor cost. Installation goes fairly quickly. Two men can put it up, but three men make a better team. Lobree likens it to the Erector sets or Legos everyone had when a child, just snap it together. "All is prewelded, set feet in, tighten up torque screws, bolt it together," said Lobree. "And just keep going." The no post hole concept eliminates issues with underground water, electric, gas utilities, easements and right-of-ways. Because it sits on top of the ground it is not considered permanent property but chattel, or movable property. It is one thing you can take with you if you relocate to a new farm or ranch. ArdenX fence is completely portable. If traveling with horses, it is ideal for setting up a safe, secure temporary corral. Overall design gives a visual perception that it is deeper and wider which deters deer. The fencing works for long, continuous fencing but also in small area situations such as around a well, or garden.

ArdenX is also ideal for mounting crop monitoring stations. Lobree recommends MEMSIC. A leading provider of MEMS sensor components for diverse world applications, ranging from agriculture, automotive, consumer, industrial and aerospace. For agriculture, Lobree says the complete mesh network wireless system is ideal for precision agriculture, smart water grids, and microlimate weather conditions. Solar powered the eKo Pro Series will work in the remotest of locations, without cellular or satellite fee charges. Essentially it is the farm's very own weather station, described Lobree. Sensors record wind direction, ambient temperature and humidity, evapotranspiration, moisture levels in the soil and rainfall at the particular site. Alarms will sound and messages are delivered when certain triggers are reached. "With farmers owning land spread out in several locations, this system is right for them," said Lobree. "He no longer needs to get in the pickup truck to have a look at crop conditions. He can check current conditions and historical data from his computer or cellular phone anywhere, anytime. Even while on a Caribbean cruise. Farmers finally ought to be able to get some sleep." Managing crops in real time, using ArdenX and MEMSIC eKo Pro Series systems will allow farmers to be more efficient, more attuned to current conditions, and be able to swiftly relocate when and where needed. Ventilation Benefits from High Volume, Low Speed Fans –by Eddie Boyd, president of MacroAir | www.macroairfans.com Indoor air quality is important whether you work in a warehouse or a barn. Indoor air, when it isn’t continuously mixed with fresh air, becomes stuffy and smelly. This is especially true in a barn where you’re subject to smells from working equipment, livestock or hay and other substances. High summer temperatures can also lower indoor air quality by increasing humidity and discomfort. Poor indoor air quality in the barn not only affects animals, but also people and productivity.

Many barn and stable owners and managers use natural ventilation systems to maintain good air quality. These systems include orientating the stable or barn to take advantage of natural airflow, opening barn doors and windows to allow the free flow of fresh air, and incorporating a roof ridge and eaves into the building design to draw in fresh air. Barn owners and managers also use high-speed box fans to keep fresh air circulating. The problem with natural ventilation systems is that they present numerous natural challenges – namely, it’s difficult to maintain a uniform air temperature. And, while box fans can help with improving air quality and lowering temperatures, they consume vast amounts of energy, are expensive to run, and you need lots of them to cool down a barn. They also kick up a lot of dust – further adding to discomfort. To maintain indoor air quality and increase the comfort level and productivity of both humans and animals, supplementing natural ventilation with high volume, low speed (HVLS) large-size commercial ceiling fans should be looked to as an efficient and cost-effective solution.

Challenges of natural ventilation systems Natural ventilation is ideal; however, these systems come with their own inherent challenges.

Maintaining uniform temperatures is difficult With a natural ventilation system, you must constantly monitor humidity and temperature. In the summer, it can be difficult to cool down the interior of a barn if a breeze isn’t blowing. If you live in areas of high humidity, opening doors and windows is simply not an option. In the winter, it may be too cold to open barn doors and windows, yet keeping them closed causes heat build up. This humidity, combined with warm temperatures, can cause respiratory issues in livestock and A 10

problems that could interfere with animal performance.

Building must be oriented correctly To take advantage of prevailing natural conditions, a barn must be oriented correctly. However, this is not always possible, given individual terrain considerations. In addition, the area around the barn must be free of obstructions to allow for the free flow of air; again, this could be problematic if your barn backs up to a hillside or is fronted by trees.

HVLS cooling fans in a farm building.

Build up of condensation On high humidity days, water vapor is released into a building. Water vapor moves independently of air and always flows to the coldest point, such as concrete floors, which cool down at night. Once the concrete slab reaches dew point as temperatures increase, condensation is formed on the floor, which poses real safety hazards to people, livestock and machinery. Condensation on roof beams also drips to the floor and surfaces, causing discomfort for animals and people, and damage to materials.

How HVLS Fans Supplement Natural Ventilation Systems To solve these problems, and to help lower interior temperatures in the summer, barn owners and managers use high-speed box fans. The problem with these fans, however, is that to effectively cool a barn, you need quite a few of them, which drives up costs as box fans consume vast amounts of energy. They also kick up dust. HVLS fans work in tandem with natural barn ventilation systems, and also reduce or eliminate many of the challenges associated with these systems while offering significant energy efficiencies and significantly lowering HVAC costs.

How HVLS fans work For some people, the slow movement of an HVLS fan is deceptive — how can such

Dairy barn with HVLS ceiling fans. a slow moving fan cool down animals in a hot barn? You don’t need a physics degree to know that a breeze moving across your skin on a hot day feels good, especially in humid environments. While a cool breeze brushing over hot skin feels good, high volume air movement can be both unpleasant and disruptive. And, air speed beyond four or five mph usually offers little, if any, additional cooling benefits. The reason why a large, slow moving fan actually cools better and more efficiently

800- 622- 8836 | The Easte rn Fa rm a n d L i v e s t o ck D i re ct o ry |

than a small, high-speed fan is due to the large column of air, “traveling” farther than a small one. Through HVLS technology, when the down column of air from an HVLS fan reaches the floor, the air turns in the horizontal direction away from the column in all directions. The air flowing outward is called the “horizontal floor jet.” Since the height of the floor jet is determined by the diameter of the column of air, a larger diameter fan naturally produces a larger air column and thus a higher floor jet.

Ventilation Benefits from High Volume, Low Speed Fans

«Equipment Innovations: Farmboy

Smaller high-speed fans are incapable of producing the same effect. Airspeed, combined with fan “effectiveness,” means that when the objective is to cool animals or people, very large, low-speed commercial fans are enormously more efficient and effective than small high-speed fans.

Benefits of Using HVLS Fans in Barn Applications HVLS fans impart a number of benefits to barn owners and managers including lower energy costs. In addition to supplementing natural ventilation systems, HVLS fans also reduce or eliminate the challenges inherent in these systems.

Equipment Budget Short? Expand On What You Already Have!

Improved ventilation and indoor air quality Although a building, including a barn, may have an air exhaust system in place, these systems often fail to thoroughly mix all of the air inside the barn. This type of system gets short circuited as doors or windows are opened and closed. Air pressure created in the suction of the exhaust looks to the path of least resistance and circumvents the intake devices. HVLS fans eliminate this problem as they continuously mix incoming fresh air, vastly improving indoor air quality.

Eliminate condensation buildup Because HVLS fans constantly mix air from roof to floor, a constant state of thermal equilibrium exists inside the building – and hence, condensation doesn’t form on the roof beams or floor, eliminating condensation dripping on livestock and building surfaces as well as helping to ensure the floor stays dry and safe. In the winter months, when “warm air rises” the effect can cost an additional 25 percent or more since more heat is required to maintain floor level temperatures. Why so much? The rate of heat loss or transmission through the roof accounts for roughly 70 percent of the transmission losses inherent in all structures. The objective, then, is to even out the temperature gradient from floor to ceiling in order to reduce heat loss. The unique feature of HVLS fans is that they can run in reverse, which pushes the warm air at the top of the structure down to the floor effectively and efficiently evening out temperature throughout the building. The result is that one HVLS fan applied to 20,000 square feet of indoor space can easily return 30 percent of heating energy dollars.

How to Choose the Right HVLS Fan Natural ventilation systems are ideal for animals, as like people, they need a continuous supply of fresh air. HVLS fans are incredibly energy efficient — one HVLS fan can replace up to 50 highspeed box fans while covering up to 20,000 square feet of barn space. Which size HVLS fan should you choose? This depends on the size of your barn and its height. To maintain continuous air exchange, add one HVLS fan per 20,000 square feet of space. The bigger the HVLS fan, the more air it can move over a larger space. MacroAir, originator of the HVLS technology in 1998 as a solution for cooling dairy cows and increasing milk production, today remains a leading manufacturer of HVLS fans in 8’ to 24’ in diameter. The company provides a number of calculator applications on its website that, upon entering specific building specifications, help determine the right MacroAir fan (or fans) to achieve optimal air movement and results: macroairfans.com/fan-calculators/.

Mark Altemeier was in need of new equipment for his produce farm and market, but, financially, a new tractor just did not fit into the business’s limited budget. Altemeier began looking for a solution by taking stock of his existing equipment. The RTV he owned had the potential to lift the same weight as a small compact tractor - all that was needed was a way to retrofit a standard Category 1, 3-point hitch to fit his RTV, and there weren’t any viable solutions on the market at that time. Ironically, this became a fortunate problem for Altemeier.

How to Make Your UTV More Versatile Altemeier got to work and with the assistance of his young son, Dylan, created a Category 1, 3-point hitch system designed for Utility Vehicles. The first Farm¬boy (or, as Dylan called it, “the Contraption”) was created. Versatile in lift limits, the hitches range from 400 to 1200 lb. lift limits. The Farmboy has been widely accepted by manufacturers. "We kept hearing from various vehicle manufacturers and customers about how UTVs could be made better. The top answer was to increase the number of attachments for them,” Altemeier said. "We are doing exactly that with our 3-point hitches - providing UTVs a link to the thousands of implements already out there. These vehicles are more than just golf carts on steroids – they are meant to do work. Our products are designed to give them this opportunity." A little more than three years later, Altemeier has designed hydraulic 3-point hitch systems for some of the top equipment manufacturers: Kubota, Kioti, Cushman, Bad Boy Buggies, Toro, John Deere ProGator and Gator 825i, Bobcats, and the Polaris Ranger 800 and 900. They are also now a part of the Orange Aftermarket Program, an alliance between Kubota Corp. and Wiedmann Bros., making them available in Kubota dealerships across the country. Another selling point for UTV Hitchworks? All products of UTV Hitchworks are manu¬factured in the United States – a position on which Mr. Altemeier will not budge. More information on the 3-point hitches manufactured by UTV Hitchworks can be found at utvhitchworks.com, or by calling 513-260-3705.

“Can my RTV pick up my 3-row planter?” (Yes, it can!) RTV 1100 with both the dump bed and the 3-row planter raised fully.

MacroAir fans have proved to lower heating and cooling costs by as much as 20 percent in a variety of building settings.

Since developing the first HVLS prototype in 1998, MacroAir continues to serve as an HVLS industry leader through its commitment to innovation and design of the most durable and cost-effective commercial ceiling fans on the market. As the “engineers of air,™” MacroAir produces energy-efficient, long-lasting HVLS fans that can be found in barns, warehouses, manufacturing plants, airplane hangars and retail establishments across the U.S. and around the world, and are used by companies such as Coca-Cola, CSX Transportation and NAPA Auto Parts. The company is the exclusive HVLS fan supplier for independent auto dealerships of BMW, Chrysler, Ford, General Motors, Lexus, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan and Toyota under their Dealer Equipment Programs. 2012 – 2013 Estate Thoughts

HOURS: Monday thru Friday, 8:00 to 5:00 Saturday 8:00 to 12:00

Dear Michael: Since the election, we've been wondering what things we might be doing to get ahead of the news coming down from Washington. What things would you suggest in light of the 'fiscal cliff', the end of tax laws at the end of the year, and four more years of the same administration? - Outvoted Dear Outvoted: I gather the election didn't go the way you wanted it to. Well, first and foremost, we do know that the Health Law passed in 2010 has stood up to the Supreme Court tests. We now know a possible ouster via the election process is no longer possible, so the Affordable Health Care Act is the law of the land and we will see states rush to get ready for the impending laws the AHCA will bring about. One little side note that many people forgot about the AHCA - which isn't going to make your day, either - is that on any income from capital gains, unearned incomes, stock and/or bonds interest, etc. over and above $250,000 per married couple ($125,000/single?) will have an additional four percent tax charged against it starting in 2013. This effectively raises capital gains and other unearned income sources tax rates for those over $250,000 (including the income) another four percent. For example, capital gains - if they go to twenty percent in 2013 and if your income is over $250,000 - will now be taxed at twenty-four percent. The additional four percent taxes are to pay for AHCA. If you're thinking of selling, 2012 may be your year. This will affect people with a lot of capital gains on sales of land, livestock, etc. etc. and it's a little forgotten piece about how we're going to pay for Affordable Health Care. The second bit of 'good' news is there is a push to lower the Unified Credit from $5,000,000 per person to $3,500,000 per person. This will put close to twenty percent of all farmers and ranchers back into estate tax situations. Up until year's end, you can gift property of up to $5,000,000 per spouse. However, if you were to gift, say, $2,500,000 in value today and the Unified Credit drops to $3,500,000 in 2013, you will only leave yourself with $1,000,000 of Unified Credit to use on the remainder of your estate at death. If you are gifting property that is either depreciating or is likely to stay flat in value for years to come, you don't accomplish anything by doing such a gift. You'll just paint yourself into a corner in the future as to what you can and cannot do! However, if you are gifting property that you feel fairly confident will rise in value for years to come (land, being the only example I can think of), why not move land out of your estate at it's current value today? If I give five million dollars worth of land today and credits

Phone 717-776-7542 Fax 717-776-7327

lower to $3,500,000, I've immediately shielded $1,500,000 from 35%-55% tax rates. I've also shielded any future growth on this asset, as well. So, if it grows to ten million by the time I die, it's out of my estate for estate tax purposes. The really, really bad thing about this whole situation is the election just occurred, it's already the middle of November and with Thanksgiving and Christmas coming up, there are really only about three to three and a half 'business weeks' to make this life altering decision. I know a lot of people are going to push the panic button and make some stupid, crazy gifts before year's end for these reasons. The only issue with a gift is this. Any gift you make should be considered like you would consider gambling money. In the same way you would never bet more than you can afford to lose, never, ever gift anything away that you might - and might in any sense of the word - need someday, Don't do it - you'll likely live to regret it. If it's assets whereby you can be assured - and not just because you want to believe it's so, but because it IS so - will never, ever come back to bite you for having given it up then by all means gift the assets away - as long as they meet the other criteria of future growth and not dropping in value later on. A gift is a gift is a gift - and once given, you cannot get it back. If you can live with that, then make the gift. If not, don't. We have a bit of a financial tsunami coming our way right now. We may find that for all the good intentions of the current program, it might bring our country to an economic standstill or even a recession. We won't know the result of these changes for six months to a year. Until we jump into the deep end and tread water for a period of time, we won't know if we're in over our heads or not. Secondly, in the war of taxes and estate planning, the planners of today and tomorrow don't yet know what they will be fighting and, therefore, don't have the tools yet to carry into the melee. But, rest assured; every time these issues have arisen in the past, new tools have been developed to give respite to those affected. We just haven't had enough time to see what we're facing nor how we will combat it - yet! We will. _________________________________________ Do you have questions about estate planning? Happy cows are likely to have happy handlers. In spite of the commercial that says happy cows live in California, how their caretakers feel and treat their cows are more important. It is probably also the case that healthy animals make their caretakers feel better too.

FARM and RANCH LIFE

The health of farm animals and the condition of farm buildings, machinery and fences may be indicators of the stress level of the persons who work on the farm. A veterinarian friend mentioned to me that the somatic cell count in milk samples from dairy cows and the body condition scores of beef cattle often reflect how stressed their owners are.

By Dr. Michael R. Rosmann

Farmers’ Behavioral Health Impacts Herd Health Farmers’ behavioral health affects the animals they raise. Dog owners are well aware their pets sense how they feel. Practitioners of artificial insemination of livestock have long known their stress levels affect the conception rate of the animals they are breeding. Animals detect the tension of the people working with them. Reproductive success diminishes when the AI technician is stressed out. Animals can sense when their handler is upset or relaxed and calm. I know from my own experiences when I raised cattle that if I felt the need to hurry as I artificially inseminated a cow, she usually didn’t cooperate. If I took my time, the cow relaxed and the job usually went faster. Stress increases the risk of farming-related injuries. An analysis of injuries to North Dakota farmers during the Farm Crisis of the 1980s by Jack Geller, Richard Ludtke and Terry Stratton, published in 1990 in the Journal of Rural Health, indicated that stress, especially financial difficulties, increased their chances of injury. Using data from the Iowa Farm Family Health and Hazard Survey (1994) and the Iowa Farm Poll (1989), Kendall Thu, Paul Lasley and other colleagues determined that stress was a risk factor for agricultural injuries. Their research was reported in the Journal of Agromedicine in 1997. Farmers’ stress levels also can affect the health of their

animals. Christina Lunner Kolstrup and Jan Hultgren examined the relationship of symptoms reported by 41 owners or managers and 20 employed workers on Swedish dairy farms to the physical health of their cows. Their study was published in the Journal of Agricultural Safety and Health in 2011. The study confirmed that stressful working conditions and behavioral health symptoms “are not uncommon” among owners/managers and employed workers. The owners/managers and dairy farm workers reported their perceived stressors and symptoms on questionnaires. Generally, the workers reported more symptoms than the owners/managers. Reported stressors included these: having to work very fast, having little influence over decisions and workloads, low sense of meaningfulness of the work and low sense of staff coherence. These stressors were associated with the following symptoms: feelings of irritation, fatigue, insomnia, headaches, nervousness and abdominal pain. Workers who felt their contributions to the dairy farm operation were valued by the owners/ managers reported fewer symptoms and greater pleasure from their work. The study found that the incidence of behavioral health symptoms of the owners/managers and employed workers was positively correlated with the incidence of mastitis in cows and the total number of cow diseases that were reported in the dairy veterinary records. Fatigue is a common problem of farm workers. We accumulate sleep debt whenever we obtain less than our bodies need. Most persons require about eight hours of sleep daily but the normal range varies from six to ten hours. If we accumulate ten hours of sleep debt, we behave similarly to when we have .08 percent alcohol in our blood, which is the legal minimum for inebriation in most states and provinces. Ten hours of sleep debt slows our reaction time, reduces the accuracy of motor movements and memory, makes us more emotionally impulsive and compromises judgment. In short, insufficient sleep increases the risk of injuries. When we are tired we are more likely to incur injuries when working with animals. Livestock can detect when “we aren’t our usual selves.” The annual reports by the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health, entitled Injuries among Farm Workers in the United States, routinely indicate animals are the leading cause of nonfatal farming-related injuries. It is important that farmers who work with livestock recognize healthy working conditions and good behavioral health of the workers increase productivity.

Dr. Michael R. Rosmann brings the perspective of a farmer in “Farm And Ranch Life”. Dr. Rosmann grew up on a mixed grain and livestock farm in Western Iowa where he experienced enjoyable hard work and 4-H, and witnessed the stresses that accompany farming and farm life. Dr. Rosmann developed the first mental health response in Iowa to the Farm Crisis of the 1980s. In 2001, Dr. Rosmann, along with partners in seven states, founded the nonprofit network, AgriWellness Inc. AgriWellness conducted research and provided counseling services to farm people. It became clearer that a specialized field – agricultural behavioral health – was needed to respond to the unique problems experienced by farmers, ranchers and others involved in agriculture. Email Dr. Rosmann at mike@agriwellness.org, or visit his website at www.agbehavioralhealth.com. You can call him at his office in Harlan, Iowa at 712-235-6100.

Some supervisors reward valuable suggestions of employees with bonuses. Another beneficial management practice is to make sure all employees, including the owners, have sufficient time to sleep, recreate, exercise, and associate with family and friends. These are investments in employees that improve production and safety.

Ag PhD Releases Population Apps for Devices Ag PhD recently announced the availability of its Harvest Loss Calculator and Planting Population Calculator on Apple® iOS and Google Android smartphone and tablet devices. These new apps, sponsored by Case IH, provide tools to help farmers make quick in-field calculations to improve their operations. Producers can download these tools for free from links on the Ag PhD website at www.agphd.com. “Our Harvest Loss and Planting Population calculator apps provide concise and valuable information to help farmers make decisions to increase their overall return on investment,” says Brian Hefty, co-host of Ag PhD TV. “I’m using both of these apps already on my farm, and we feel many other farmers will benefit from them, too." Case IH sponsors Ag PhD’s Iron Talk segment, and this year extended its support to make the Harvest Loss Calculator and Planting Population Calculator apps available to producers. “We value the insights and expertise Ag PhD brings to agriculture – helping producers be ready to address in-field challenges and take advantage of opportunities," says Julie Rudnick, Product Launch Strategy Senior Project Manager. "We are proud to be part of those efforts and provide new tools to support producers in the field during both planting and harvest seasons.”

Harvest Loss App The Ag PhD Harvest Loss Calculator allows farmers to estimate yield loss before and during harvest by recording the number of individual corn, soybean, wheat, sorghum, barley or oat seeds found on the ground in a square foot. With this information, the app can calculate the number of bushels farmers have lost per acre.

“With commodity prices for many crops at record levels, even the loss of a single bushel per acre over an entire farm can translate to thousands of dollars of lost revenue," Hefty says.

Planting Population App The Ag PhD Planting Population Calculator has two functions. First, during planting season, the app can determine optimum in-row spacing between seeds based upon row width and the desired planting population per acre. Second, after crop emergence, the app allows farmers to determine a stand count by helping them count the number of plants that have emerged in a specific row length.

Download Today The Ag PhD Harvest Loss and Planting Population Calculator apps are available now. Versions for iPhone®, iPad® and iPod touch devices can be downloaded from the Apple iTunes Store. Android apps can be downloaded from the Google Play Store.

K I O T I Tr a c t o r H e l p s M a i n e F a m i l y Blueberry Farmers Prosper Every August millions of people make their way to the state of Maine to enjoy its beauty during the last few weeks of summer. While tourists soak up the sun on Maine’s beautiful beaches, hike one of its many trails, climb one of its mountains or simply relax and take in its picturesque shoreline, locals remain hard at work. With blueberries being one of the states staple agricultural products and August being the month when they are harvested, the last bit of summer is marked by long, hard days for those who call the area home. Ivan Hanscom, a native of Machais, Maine, has been harvesting blueberry fields for more than 40 years. There are few people who understand the hard work and dedication it takes to be a successful blueberry farmer more than Hanscom. “Long before we used machinery to harvest blueberries, we hand raked the fields, yielding about 20 boxes of berries per person, per day,” states Hanscom. “About 15 years ago, we decided to invest in equipment that would make our blueberry operation more productive and profitable, eliminating the need to hand rake and the labor cost associated with that, while exponentially increasing our daily yield.” To justify his initial investment in the harvesting equipment, Hanscom formed Hanscom Industries and began harvesting far more than the 50 acres of blueberry fields owned by his family. By offering his harvesting services to others, he was able to successfully offset the cost of the equipment, while establishing a business that continues to thrive and grow today. While the original equipment is no longer in use, Hanscom Indsutries continues to rely on heavy equipment to harvest. After significant research in early 2012, Hanscom purchased the newest of his harvesting equipment, a KIOTI DK90 tractor from Profile Tractor and Equipment, his local Authorized KIOTI Tractor Dealer. He then outfitted the tractor with a heavy-duty harvester implement from Doug Bragg Enterprises of Canada that would immediately test the rugged durability, hydraulic capacity and PTO of his new KIOTI.

need to handle, including uneven terrain, long hours of non-stop use and the heavy-weight and demanding hydraulics of the blueberry harvester implement it would need to support. We work our tractors hard day in and day out,” states Grant Hanscom, who frequently operates the KIOTI DK90 tractor. While some may say that heavier weight leads to inefficient use of fuel, Hanscom Industries has experienced just the opposite. “The DK90 has been extremely fuelefficient and its large, 33 gallon fuel tank allows us to refuel less often, so we can harvest more berries each day.” In August 2012, Hanscom Industries, now run by Ivan, his son Grant and grandson Jacob, harvested over 100 acres yielding more than a ½ million pounds of blueberries. As important to blueberry farming as weight is speed. A tractor with too much speed or the inability to operate at a very slow speed doesn’t allow the operator to adjust operation as needed to maximize the number of blueberries harvested. As such, many tractor owners who use their machine to pick berries purchase it with an optional creeper gear so that they are able to reduce the speed of the tractor to a near crawl without it stalling. “KIOTI’s DK90 tractor comes with a creeper gear as standard equipment at no added cost to the customer. And its 4 speeds allow it to speed up for low yields or slow down for high yields. Most competitive model tractors offer only 3 speeds,” states Wayne Rose, General Manager of Profile Tractor and Equipment, “And the creeper gear when added to a tractor as an option can cost a customer anywhere from $4,000 - $8,000 dollars. This was a major selling feature for Hanscom when considering the purchase of the DK90.”

“Since we’ve been in the blueberry harvesting business so long, we knew the daily rigors that a tractor would

Pump It, Store It, or Haul It

WOULD YOU LIKE TO HAVE LESS EQUIPMENT TO MAINTAIN? SAVE INPUT COST OF SEED?

We have found that planting wheat with a KINZE planter in 15” rows gives you, the producer, more control of seed spacing and seed depth than with a drill. Plants will emerge faster and have less competition between sunlight and moisture.

On the left is a wheat plate and on the right is the wheat plate fitted on a bean unit.

By planting in 15” rows approximately 3/4 of the seeds per acre are needed to produce comparable yields as a drill giving you, the producer, more profit per acre at harvest. Yes, weeds and disease are a concern in wheat, but with 15” spacing between rows less damage is done during chemical and fertilizer applications. Less disease pressure occurs by allowing more air to flow between rows making mildew less of a factor.

Pennywise

Another Tool in the Fine Art of Money Management By Paula Vogelgesang

Email: Pennywise at pennywise@gwtc.net.

Celebrate the New Year by Shedding the 'Stuff' Several years ago, I wrote an article entitled 'Shared Blessings' and in light of the state of our economy today, I think some of that article needs repeating. As a nation, we have been greatly blessed over the years of our lives to accumulate lots of stuff – and there comes a point when we need to get rid of some of that said 'stuff'. After helping several elderly folks clear out their homes as they prepare to move into senior apartments, assisted living and nursing homes, I realized I just have too much! I have made it my goal for this new year to spend just 20 minutes a day cleaning out something in my house. Now a lot of you might say, "What the heck can you get done in just 20 minutes? I can't get anything done in just 20 minutes!" Do you talk on the phone? Text? Watch a mindless television program? Flip though a magazine? Read a chapter in that new

book you just bought? Of course you do. And it all takes just about 20 minutes. I have found I can do quite a lot in a short length of time if I just focus on the task at hand. (I tend to get distracted a lot.) I can type out several articles for this paper, I can answer a couple of e-mails, and I can do some of the prepwork required to get this paper ready for the printer. And, I can clean something in 20 minutes. A sink full of dishes, a kitchen towel drawer, a shelf in the bathroom, empty a small tote, or clean one shelf in a kitchen cupboard. I really can get a lot accomplished in just 20 minutes. I've started to set the kitchen timer to keep myself on task.

The next item of business is, "Now what do I do with the stuff I don't want it or need it any more?" I sort as I go, pitching anything that is broken, stained or badly worn. Dump time! My goal this year is to donate what I don't need. I'm sick of being a procrastinator. I don't usually have garage sales, although I love going to them. I've only been involved in a couple of them over the years and I had to haul everything about 30 miles, set it up, and haul home what didn't sell. It's just a whole lot easier for me to just donate thing I don't need or want any more. I now have a blue plastic tote sitting in a closet to hold the donations. As I find things I don't need any more, I put them in

the tote, whether it be it an item of clothing, a set of bowls, pots, pans, whatever it happens to be. And when the tote is full, off it goes! My 'blessings' will be shared with someone else. And best of all, my kids won't have to deal with the excess on down the road. Years ago, when I wrote the original piece, a friend of a friend had shared that she was gifting her excess blessings to a battered women's shelter. They help women and children start over again in an apartment or home, and sadly, too many times, they left with just the clothes on their backs. They have nothing and need everything! This little here gal packed bedding, kitchen items, toys and clothing in plastic totes and donated the tote and the contents. It's a wonderful way to start off the New Year and share your blessings at the same time. Give it a try and enjoy the results! Till next month, Paula

New Use for Bread Tabs, Zipper Help For The Kids, Grease Free Baking Idea and More! New Use for Bread Tabs Use those white plastic bread tabs to mark cords for computer set ups: monitor, printer, etc. The hole in the end is open and slips over the cord. You just write on the tab with a permanent marker what the cord is used for. And they are free, sort of. You've already paid for them when you bought the bread!

Zipper Help For The Kids One of those big notebook rings that are used in offices to corral papers with holes punched in the corners can be very useful to help small children zip up their own coats. By putting the ring through the little hole in the zipper tab, it gives the child something large enough to hang on to so they can zip up and unzip their own coat as a step to independence.

Alka Seltzer To The Rescue! Have a stinky thermos or one with a 'deposit' of water lime and gunk around the edges? A simple solution is to fill the thermos full of water and drop in four Alka Seltzer tablets. Let them fizz and soak for at least an hour or overnight and the sludge and smell will wash right out.

Grease Free Baking Idea If you prefer using solid shortening or butter to grease cookie sheets and pan instead of the

A 16

spray, keep your hands clean by putting one hand into a cheap plastic sandwich bag and using that for a glove. You don't need a paper towel or a napkin this way – just the plastic bag. Spread the fat with your hand. The warmth softens it a bit and makes it spread easier. One bag can serve for a whole batch of cookies and even the casserole dish for the meal. I turn mine wrong side out between each use.

The 'Thing'

in the bags, I cut up into chunks to stuff the body and legs.

used it for years. And then it sat in the basement, just waiting...

It's floppier and not nearly as cute as the commercial one, but my son and his sisters love it anyway. They use it as a pillow when watching the television – all 3 of them at once. They jump on it, sit on it, use it to 'bop on' (hit it) when they are mad at a sibling, etc.

Now, they have grandchildren and that same old cardboard box is once again a haven for the small fry – and they love it! She said one of her boys wanted to throw that thing out until he saw how much fun his own children were having.

And all it cost me was a little time and imagination.

A free playhouse – why not ask a furniture or appliance dealer if they ever have such a box that they would give it to you just for hauling it away? They can only say no, but most of the time, the answer is yes!

My son really wanted a huge purple critter he saw at a flea market last summer, and even though it was marked down, it was still too much for my budget. (They wanted $75 for the thing!) Late in the fall, I was given a huge piece of purple fuzzy fabric from a friend who was moving. So, I drew out my own pattern of a "critter" on newspapers I'd taped together, cut the "critter" out and sewed it up. So far, so good! Then came time to get the stuffing. Holy Cow! When I figured up the cost of filling the insides, it almost made me pass out and I sure didn't have that kind of money. I had a couple of garbage bags of old rags; tshirts that were stretched out, holey towels, etc. and a couple of old pillows in the corner of the closet, so I used the pillow stuffing for the head of the "critter", and the rest of the stuff

Laura would offer a cake for any occasion and used this 'double flip' method to get her cakes right side up. She also took cardboard boxes and cut cake trays from the bottoms, covered them with aluminum foil and placed the cake on the 'tray'. She never had to worry about finding the cake pan before she went home, and the remaining cake could be given to anyone who needed a little 'extra sweetness'

Ritual of ‘Giving Thanks’ Goes Back 6,000 Years Since I am writing this on Thanksgiving, I feel it is proper to talk about our history of this Holiday. Surprisingly enough, I am going way back into history, before Abraham Lincoln made it a National Holiday in 1863, and even before what was considered the First Thanksgiving by the pilgrims and Native Americans in 1621. How about we go back around 6,000 years ago, to a reference in the Book of 1 Chronicles 16:7; That day David first committed to Asaph and his associates this psalm of thanks to the Lord: Give thanks to the Lord, call on his name; make known among the nations what He has done. Sing to him, sing praise to him; tell of all his wonderful acts. Glory in his holy name; let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice. David continues thanks in the Psalms 7:17; I will give thanks to the Lord because of his righteousness, and will sing praise to the name of the Lord Most High. 28:7, The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in him, and I am helped. My heart leaps for joy and I will give thanks to him in song. 107:1 Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; His love endures forever. 136:1, Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good. His love endures forever. Give thanks to the God of gods; His love endures forever. Give thanks to the Lord of lords; His love endures forever. Luke 2:38... (Anna in the Temple) Coming up to them at that very moment, she gave thanks to God and spoke about the child to all who were looking forward to the redemption of Jerusalem. It wasn’t just Jerusalem but our whole world. Luke 17:12... Now on his way to Jerusalem, Jesus traveled along the border between Samaria and Galilee. As He was going into a village, ten men who had leprosy met him. They stood at a distance and called out in a loud voice, “Jesus, Master, have pity on us!” When He saw them, he said, “Go, show yourselves to the priests.” And as they went, they were cleansed. One of them, when he saw he was healed, came back praising God in a loud voice. He threw himself at Jesus feet and thanked him, and he was a Samaritan. Jesus asked, “Were not all ten cleansed? Where are the other nine? Was no one found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner?” Then He said to him, “Rise and go, your faith has made you well.” A little more understanding is needed here to garner even more out of it. Jesus was a Jew, and the thankful healed man was a Samaritan; usually these two did not associate and hated each other. Jesus came to seek and to save that which is lost. Luke 19:10 Color, race, ethnicity, etc., has no bearing. Paul says in EpheA 18

sians 5:20 to always give thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Paul in Philippians 4:4... Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. 1 Thessalonians 5:16... Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. James 1:16,17, Don’t be deceived, my dear brothers. Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. Revelation 4:9 Whenever the living creatures give glory, honor and thanks to him who sits on the throne and who lives forever and ever. There are many more places in the Bible where ‘giving thanks’ events happened, but I think you get the picture and idea. Thankfulness came from us appreciating the gifts that God has given us. Fast forward to the “First Thanksgiving” in 1621, where the Pilgrims celebrated with Native Americans after a good harvest. Fast forward to 1863 where Abraham Lincoln proclaimed “Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelt in the Heavens,” making Thanksgiving a national Holiday. The ultimate thanksgiving has to be for the greatest gift ever given: Jesus Christ, to pay for our sins, so that if we believe in Him we will someday join our beneficent Father in the Heavens. Have a great Holiday Season. Don’t forget to take the time to think about how good we have had it for 6000 years. –Steve Huneke

3 Steps to Prepare for the Next Disaster As a "sudden wealth" financial planner, I take great pride in helping others determine where they are going and how to get there. I consider myself an eternal optimist. In my mind, the glass is not half empty or half full – it is well on its way to becoming full. People are generally good and do what is right. On the other hand, I'm also a realist, looking not only at the destination but rather at all of the things that can go wrong along the way. Bad things happen to good people all the time. Some things we simply can't prevent. Superstorm Sandy is a reminder that we all need to plan for the unexpected and that you need to protect your family in the event of a natural disaster. September was National Preparedness Month, which is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. When I hear "homeland security," I think of terrorism, but this agency also assumes primary responsibility for ensuring that emergency response professionals are prepared for any situation. There are a few things you and I can do today to help protect our families and loved ones. The three steps Homeland Security recommends are 1. Get a kit; 2. Make a plan; 3. Be informed.

Get a kit. That refers to an emergency kit with a few basic supplies. According to Ready America, here is what such a kit should contain: • One gallon of water per person per day for at least three days (for drinking and sanitation) • At least a three-day supply of non-perishable food • Battery-powered or hand-crank radio and a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration weather radio with tone alert and extra batteries for both (a good option is the American Red Cross Axis NOAA weather radio) • Flashlight and extra batteries • First-aid kit • Whistle to signal for help • Dust mask to help filter contaminated air, along with plastic sheeting and duct tape • Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation • Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities • Can opener for food (if kit contains canned food) • Local maps There are also several additional items that you should consider for your kit, according to Ready America: • Prescription medications and glasses • Infant formula and diapers • Pet food and extra water for your pet (you can't forget about them!) • Important family documents, such as copies of insurance policies, identification and bank account records in a waterproof, portable container • Cash and change • Sleeping bag or warm blanket for each person; consider additional bedding if you live in a cold weather climate • Complete change of clothing, including a long-sleeved shirt, long pants and sturdy shoes; consider additional clothing if you live in a cold weather climate • Household chlorine bleach and medicine dropper (when diluted, with nine parts water to one part bleach, the solution can be used as a disinfectant); in an emergency, you can use it to treat water by using 16 drops of regular household liquid bleach per gallon of water – do not use scented, color safe or bleaches with added cleaners • Fire extinguisher • Matches in a waterproof container • Feminine supplies and personal hygiene items • Mess kits, paper cups, plates and plastic utensils, paper towels • Paper and pencil • Books, games, puzzles or other activities for children

Make a plan If disaster strikes and your family is not together, it's important to have a plan of action -- how you will contact one another, where you will meet and related considerations. Ready America has a form you can download to prepare such as a plan.

Be informed It's important to know what's happening locally in an emergency and if there are special instructions you should follow. An AM/FM radio can keep you informed. Create the emergency kit and review it with your family a couple of times a year so the next time disaster strikes you are prepared.

clear clutter, organize your home, & reclaim your life

Strong black coffee: More American that you may realize Your morning cup of coffee may be a vital daily ritual, but a black caffeinated beverage was once an important element of Native American culture that’s only now being understood by scientists.

Try a Clutter-Free and Guilt-Free Holiday Season Financially, physically, mentally, and emotionally, the holidays can drain us. Ironically, it can be a tough time of year on our spirituality, relationships and family, and even career. Would you like to get off the holiday bandwagon? It may be simpler than you think, and, guess what, you wouldn’t be alone! It happened at my November simple living group meeting one year. Two women, without so much as a twinge of guilt in their voices, "confessed" that they didn't bake Christmas cookies! One said she buys them or simply let others bring them. The other woman said she makes banana bread for gifts instead because it is simpler. How dare they! I was more envious about their obvious lack of guilt than about the fact that they didn't bake cookies. Another woman talked about the last time it was her turn to host the extended family Christmas dinner. She decided to forego the expected traditional Swedish multi-course extravaganza in favor of a make-ahead stuffed shell pasta dish, tossed salad, and garlic bread. The audacity! I had read this idea before, but I had never actually done it! Worse yet, this woman wasn't feeling a bit guilty. She was happy about it. She talked about how everyone had enjoyed the simplicity of the food. She also said that, "After all, the big dinner was only a tradition, and her family could always go back to the tradition another year." Her idea was simple and also brilliant. She could choose to drop, change, or simplify a tradition. Another year, she could simply choose to go back to the tradition if she wanted. These women really got me thinking. When planning and organizing only take you so far, how do you simplify after that? Who would care if I didn't make so many Christmas cookies this year? Who would feel bad if the meal wasn’t as elaborate as last year? Who would notice if the gifts were fewer or less extravagant this time around? I suspect the answer is me, maybe even just me. I let myself make Christmas too busy, complicated, and stressful because of my own expectations. In Christmas' past, I have unintentionally run my family and myself physically and emotionally ragged to meet unimportant expectations that I clung to in my head. I felt like activities and events that were supposed to be fun just turned into more stuff to be gotten through and crossed off the holiday to-do list. I have been relieved when the holidays were over. Whew! We survived another holiday. We are off the hook for another year. I know there have been times during past holidays where I have foolishly exchanged fun and spirit for quantity just to meet my own expectations. I ignored my gut and pressed forward. Have you ever done that? This year we can choose to notice and heed the nagging twist in our hearts that happens when we strain ourselves to achieve overblown holiday goals. We can step back and pause to re-evaluate our choices and the impact those choices have on our family. The first step for me: I will make fewer cookies. That is, I will make cookies with my daughters, and when it stops being fun, we will stop. If I have spare time, I may make more by myself–if I feel like it.

The beverage, brewed with the toasted leaves of the Yaupon holly plant, apparently dominated religious ceremonies in Cahokia, considered North America’s first city. Cahokia was located near the site of modern-day East St. Louis from about the year 1050 to 1350, before abruptly disappearing for no clear reason.

Barbara Tako — Motivational Speaker and Author

will say, " enough," and we will hop into the car, and drive around to look at Christmas lights. When holiday crafting gets frustrating for me or for my kids, I will say, "Hey, this is good enough," and we will stop and do something else. Finally, I will not whip myself or my family into an unhappy frenzy to prepare an elaborate meal or create a perfectly clean house. It just isn't worth it. I don't want my kids to remember their holidays or their mother that way! If it isn't simple enough or joyous enough, don’t do it. Most importantly, don’t let yourself feel guilty for those choices. I will choose to feel peaceful and grateful for having the chance to make better choices. Maybe I am getting closer to the true spirit of Christmas. If so, it has taken years. I don't know. I just know that when I have opportunities to trade guilt and frustration for peace and joy this month, I will take them–-for me and for my family, and you can too!

Researchers analyzing ceramic pottery excavated from the Cahokia site found residues of the black drink in shell-shaped mugs. Because the holly it was brewed from isn’t native to the region, scientists view its presence as evidence that Cahokia was a hub of trading and commerce, suggesting that the drink was important to the early Native American culture. The brew’s presence in the high-quality cups found by archeologists suggests it was highly prized— perhaps more sacred than a double latté.

Will your body’s electricity run electronic gizmos? Your body generates a small alternating-current electrical field that’s unique to you, like your fingerprints or your DNA. Scientists at Dartmouth hope to take advantage of this by designing a wearable electronic device that will respond only to commands from its designated user—or wearer. The device, called an “amulet,” would resemble a wristwatch and use tiny electrodes to measure the impact of the body’s alternating current and identify the person wearing it. The amulet could be used to monitor health conditions and interact with your other devices. The main hurdle right now is reliably interpreting the data flowing through the amulet’s sensors, but if successful, it could eliminate many concerns about wireless security.

Question: It’s ok to finish using containers of banned pesticides, as long as the label on the container is intact. True or False? Answer: False. It is against federal law to use banned pesticides. In addition, using banned pesticides can endanger your health, your family’s health, your neighbor’s health and the environment. If you have banned pesticides, you must treat them as hazardous waste. Call your county Extension office to find out how to dispose of them. Do not simply pour them out in a secluded area. It’s illegal, unethical and very dangerous. One ounce of pesticide can contaminate up to 7,800 gallons of groundwater to potentially dangerous levels.

Question: As long as you wash clothes in hot water, it is ok to wash pesticide-soiled clothes with your family’s regular wash. True or False? Answer: False. Clothing worn when applying farm or home pesticides can contaminate other items of clothing both before and during washing. Launder these items separately. While proper laundering removes most of the pesticide from clothing, some trace residue can remain. It is unclear how these trace residues affect human health. To learn the added steps needed to properly wash pesticide contaminated clothing, check with your county Extension office.

“PROFITS GROW WITH KNIGHTRO” –Ken E. Knight Knightro Sessions | Mending Fences and Tending Senses

YOUR VOICE IN THE MARKETING PLACE OF YOUR CHOICE

THE STABLE The Centerpiece of Christmas Thank God for livestock at the time of the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ! With the stench of the election still blowing in the wind, Christmas comes as a breath of fresh air. Like that of cleaning the barn and refurbishing it with the amenities of golden flurry straw and freshly mown alfalfa hay — the comparison is heartwarming and reassuring. So much so, that I want to continue to share with you, the most popular of all my columns. There has been more response to the Christmas message than any other "story" I've told, a clear sign of the times. This is especially true in rural America, where Christian values are still the cornerstone of family lives. As we celebrate the season of Christmas, we are reminded of the role that livestock played in the life of Jesus. His very survival at the time of his birth was dependent upon the heat and warmth of a barn full of livestock. To have laid him in a manger, protected from harm's way, where the radiant body heat of the animals would keep him warm was as much a part of the miracle as the miracle itself. The miracle that continues to sustain the world in these difficult times of war and terror will continue to give us hope for all eternity. To have been born of the Virgin Mary was miraculous, but to have survived is perhaps the greatest role that livestock has ever played in our lives. We like to think of livestock as our primary source of protein, nourishment, and satiety value— like that of no other food. For those reasons alone we will always be grateful for God's creation; especially meat for the table. But how much thought have we ever given to the fact that Jesus may never have survived that first night on earth if it hadn't been for he comfort provided by that lowly barn full of God's creatures. The message is as clear and relevant today as it was then. The only difference is we've had Jesus since that point in time to sustain our lives and give us hope for all eternity. •As real as the message is to our lives, one would have

to concede that those of us that grew up with livestock, perhaps have an easier time relating than those that are generations removed from the ardors of the stable. *Remember when the barn was the focal point of the farm; when the barn up-staged the house and every other building on the farmstead. More time was spent in the barn then in the house, and certainly a lot more maintenance, upkeep, and money was spent in this arena. It was a lifestyle that left little doubt about believing in the Christmas miracle. The stable was the focal point of our very existence. It was our source of income, food for the table, and often housed our only source of enabling power. Horsepower, for many, was the only means of transportation in the cold of the winter months. I remember riding to school in a horse driven sleigh, buying groceries, and attending church, as there was no other means of transportation. The roads were drifted shut with high banks of snow, and temperatures were so cold that most vehicles wouldn't start. Impassable roads were improvised in open fields and wind swept prairies. Cars were housed under snow banks until the warmth of spring would thaw them out. The Christmas miracle seemed so real. Milking the cows and selling the beef and pork were our primary sources of income. Without the barn, none of this would have been possible. Relating to the barn was as second nature as that of visualizing Jesus lying in a manger in the comfort of all those livestock. The sights, sounds, and smells of the barn instilled memories that will linger with me forever. There was nothing more welcoming than walking into a warm barn, the smell of freshly mowed alfalfa hay, the clean golden comfort of fluffed-up straw, and the baaing of a new born lamb. There may not have been room in the Inn for Jesus, but I'm convinced that this was part of the "plan", as the stable has become symbolic for all of mankind to remember.

Unfortunately man has become so far removed from the rigors of reality, that he can no longer connect with the miracle of Christmas. The Christmas story seems so far removed from today's world, that it almost seems unbelievable. The bright lights and tinsel of modern day Christmas has driven Christ further and further away; until the real gift of life has become over-shadowed by the gifts of materialism. If the young people of today could only experience the feeling of waking up with frost on the end of your nose, or walking through a blinding snow storm to get to the barn, perhaps the miracle of Christmas would become more real to them. I remember tying a string, several hundred feet long, between the barn and the house to keep from losing our way. And when the weather forecast predicted snow, cold, and wind it was time to — "Hook up the team, heat up the oven and let's get neighborly."

It's Christmas Time In America! As the association of time and circumstances continue to drift away from the reality of the miracle of Christmas it is easy to understand that believing was easier when times were simpler. The reality of the world which man has made is causing many to lose their way. Am I suggesting that we turn back in time, or things were better when we didn't have electricity, television, e-mail, etc? Though I do wonder about that, there are no definitive answers—- implied or otherwise. Progress is wonderful, but progress at the expense of condemnation, peace, and the void of the Christmas miracle is too high a price to pay! Jesus paid the ultimate price of dying that we might live and be reborn into the glory of eternity. We can't cash in on that price if we don't believe. If it takes acquiring a donkey and building a little stable to get grounded — then

do it! A "kick in the ass" wouldn't hurt most of us. Just believe — it's the best insurance policy you'll ever own, and it's free. So, all of you livestock producers, listen up! You've got an easier row to hoe than those less fortunate than you. The stable and the manger make up the centerpiece of your labors, as well as the centerpiece of Christmas. Be more understanding of those less fortunate and show more leadership in spreading the good word of the miracle of Christmas. For those of us that know the difference, there comes an obligation of helping to save those that have not heard. Livestock producers are known to be pretty good at spreading it pretty thick. My favorite spot to gather with my friends and neighbors is still my barn. My stable is the centerpiece of my folk lore and a constant reminder of the centerpiece of my life. Thank you for allowing me to share these sentiments during this special season of Christmas. I was asked to do this at one of our local churches during Christmas, and it has become a favorite message among senior citizen groups. It was in the sharing of these stories that Pony Tales by Ponty was contrived. They are a collection of writings inspired by personal life experiences that are farm and livestock related. Within each story is a message of inspiration and hope from which one can draw empirical strength or empathy. You've either been there or seen it happen.

MERRY CHRISTMAS

–by Ken E. Knight (author of the KNIGHTRO Report

Pony Tales by PONTY:

A Ride Down Memory Lane The Christmas Greeting It was magical — like that of a voice coming from the heavens! "Merry Christmas Kenny!" We had just pulled into the Kansas City Railroad Depot. There were Christmas lights everywhere, and Christmas carols filled the air waves, like that of permeating the whole world with the spirit of Christmas. And all at once, there was this hush of total silence. The silence was deafening as I heard my name being spoken. A little boy, only 5 yrs. old, never before away from home, it was just too much to take it all in. I realize now that the whole stint had been orchestrated by my Uncle Edgar, but hearing your name being announced over the PA system, for all to hear, seemed bigger than life. Our parents had been planning this trip from North Dakota for more than a year, and my younger sister, Ardell and I were getting more excited as each passing day drew us closer to Christmas. Mom & Dad weren't really any better, as they planned with so much detail to make this a trip of a lifetime. After all, this was my Dad's brother, a prominent Christian minister in Kansas City. How much more pressure could there be to make a favorable impression? It was such a memorable experience that it will be etched in my mind forever. But I'm forever saddened that our families never stayed close, as lost in the shadows of paths seldom crossed can be a life time of unfurled treasures. The treasurers were always there, right out in the open for all to enjoy. But for reasons not fully understood, some of the glitter of life has seemed to blind the inner soul.

Like that of never getting to really know my Dads other brother, Virgil, a civil engineer in Alaska. Just vaguely, on two different occasions did I ever experience any kind of a relationship — once when I was about 3 years old, and another brief visit about fifteen years later. And his beautiful sister, Eula, is but a faded memory of postcards exchanged at Christmas. They have all passed on, but I'll be forever grateful for their inspiration and example of life, for which I've tried to follow. There are visions of Christmas that were conjured up by a recent visit from my cousin, Carol, also from Alaska. She and her husband, Darrell, were a reminder of all these many years, barley knowing that either of our families existed. Not that my Dad wasn't proud to be kin of a minister, engineer, and a beauty, for these are the manna of dreams. But the road of life was traveled intuitively by each, as though the other didn't exist. (So much for genetics.) Though I didn't know my Dad's family very well, they had to have been driven by fame and fortune, unlike my Father who was driven by the independence of a free spirit. He was actually gregariously famous for his community philanthropy — maybe this makes them equal, each in their own way. But this family has been a gift to me, each in its own way, most noticeably remembered those 70 plus years ago at Christmas time at an railroad depot!

Isaish 9:6 "For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given."

Automobile accessories that didn’t make the cut James Bond’s cars come equipped with ejector seats and machine guns. Real-life automakers have been similarly creative with accessories, though not all of them have stood the test of time. The Allstate website notes three of the more unusual variations that autos have sported at one time or another: • The record player. The 1956 Chrysler, DeSoto, Dodge, and Plymouth models offered an optional turntable that slid out from beneath the dashboard to play drivers’ vinyl records as the touch of a button. • The third headlight. The 1948 Tucker Sedan sported an additional headlight in the center of its hood, capable of swiveling along with the car’s steering wheel for improved visibility when turning corners. Only 51 of the sedans were ever built, and the extra headlight had to be hidden behind a cover because of laws in 17 states prohibiting more than two headlights on cars. • The invisible gas cap. For a more streamlined look, some carmakers tried hiding fuel caps behind taillights and rear license plates; the 1956 Chevy Bel Air featured a rear headlight that would flip down to reveal the gas cap. The practice was discontinued when safety experts pointed out that in a rear-end collision, even a small bump could create a dangerous gasoline leak. JA NU ARY 20 13

Hoover Diesel Service LLC has the expertise and sources to provide complete power unit packages for the stationary non-road market Gehman Bros. of Terre Hill, Pa, was a lawnmower shop as well as a Petter Diesel dealer. Melvin Hoover joined Gehman Bros in 1973 to work in their diesel division and in 1974 bought the Petter Diesel aspect of the company and renamed the company Hoover Diesel Service. Two years later, in 1976, the business was moved to a larger facility for a higher parts stock and more engine storage space. Distributorship of the Lombardini Diesels was taken on at the same time.

In the fall, it can be used to lightly till the soil and incorporate and size residue, setting the stage for the spring planting season. It is also a practical way to dry out wet soils. The Vertical Tillage Coulter Kit Attachment works well in no-till conservation tillage, as well as conventional tillage operations, extending the growing season and creating better planting conditions. Vertical tillage prepares the soil to warm more quickly in early spring, energizing the seedbed for maximum growth and yield potential. In addition the Vertical Tillage Coulter Kit Attachment allows for shallow seedbed preparation which decreases the risk of excess soil density below the root zone.

Stop filter fuel gelling in cold weather

Cold conditions often affect fuel flow during start-up and in daily operations. When it is cold enough to cause fuel gelling, over-the-road trucks, heavy machinery, automobiles, generators and other equipment that must operate in low temperatures can become disabled. The gelling plugs the filter, preventing fuel passage. The only solutions are to replace the filter or warm up the fuel until it flows again, requiring towing the equipment to an inside location or bringing a heater to the equipment site.

In 1985, the Lister company and the Petter Diesel company merged, giving us access to the Lister-Petter line of diesels. With the added capacity of selling both Lombardini and Lister-Petter engines, and after several additional employees, it was decided to build a 9,000 square foot structure in 1986. It included a dedicated engine rebuilding department, larger parts department, and a road service bay. In 1992 we were introduced to the Iveco Industrial dealership, which gave us access to an excellent line of diesels. 2005 brought on two more dealerships, as we added John Deere and Yanmar to our collection. With our ever increasing stock of parts, along with the generator sales, our facility gradually filled up. In 2011 we opened our brand new 31,000 square foot building.

Turning reclaimed materials into longlasting cow comfort Gabel Belting has perfected a method to reclaim used rubber conveyor belts from the mining industry.

Gabel Belting Rubber Flooring

This rubber belting is made by using the highest quality rubber and bonding it to steel cables which run laterally through the belt. This process produces a very unique product which provides rubber flooring for dairy and horse operations that greatly reduces concrete stress-related problems occurring in the legs and feet of cows confined to free-stall dairy facilities. The steel cables keep the rubber from stretching and buckling caused by constant livestock traffic and skid steer scraper machines. The belt stays in place and will last indefinitely compared to some newer manufactured rubber products available today. Unlike these newer products, the steel cabled rubber belting has a much greater toughness, providing a solid rubber floor that is a safe, popular alternative to concrete in the industry. The competition: Diaphragms 1 to 3 cfm–maximum.

Unique heart formula saves countless lives

#3. American Eagle: High volume is more important than high pressure. American Eagle puts out only 8 to 9 psi but can supply up to six diffusers. The competition: Diaphragm more pressure, but can only supply a maximum of two diffusers.

Over 20 years ago Jim Strauss suffered a major heart attack and was told he would need bypass surgery or he would die. Jim was born into a family of herbalists stretching back to the 17th century. He learned these crafts during childhood, gathering medicinal herbs in the Austrian countryside with his grandmother.

#7. American Eagle: Pump action is a huge 1 and 3/4” stroke some call intermittent. Most pumps are. The Eagles huge volume of air creates the most effective method of water circulation. More air, more circulation. The competition: Only 1/2” stroke, also intermittent. Less volume of air results in much less water circulation. To read fourteen more reasons to choose American Eagle, go to our website at www. pondaeration.com/before.html.

He was taught that tasting herbs could detect their medicinal value, but balance and proportion were the keys to producing formulas that were effective and immediate. Jim’s heart attack was not a fluke. He admits to having lived in the fast lane, ignoring the healthier lifestyle of his parents. He considers himself fortunate as nearly half of first time heart attacks end in death. Relying on knowledge acquired over the years, he refused the recommended surgery and instead put together an herbal formula which he immediately applied to himself with outstanding results. In 3 months, his 2” arterial blockage was cleared. Since that time, Jim has shared his formula with thousands around the world who are living testimonials to its curative powers. One of many clients recently wrote: “I would like to tell you that after three months of using Strauss Heart Drops, I am a new man. I am 86 years old, no more the tired feeling I had, my swollen feet are normal again, and my bowel is working normally. Two specialists had told me ‘we can’t help you’.” — Sincerely, Peter A. Wiebe.

See our “Compare” video on our web site (www.pondaeration.com) to see why 100% of who compare ‘hands on’ buy the American Eagle.

#4. American Eagle: 8 to 9 psi will supply one diffuser 14 to 16 feet. The competition: Diaphragms will pump deeper but with very little volume of air. The deeper you pump, the less volume. #5. American Eagle: Bellow warranty, five years. The competition: Diaphragm warranty–ZERO!

Irrigation engines can be more affordable with a fuel mixer Realize saving of up to $3.00 per hour, per engine using a Dual Fuel Mixer

cost savings has been very substantial. Hardy said producers have told him they have savings of over $3.00 per hour by using the mixer over straight diesel, and have had gains of 100-150 rpm from their engines.

eliminating the need to sub-contract. In order to quote and design a building for you, we need to ask several questions about your building, such as use, elevation above sea level and more.

Another benefit they have reported is oil change intervals could be longer with the fuel mix versus the straight diesel.

- Manufactures pre-engineered metal buildings - Mini Storage facilities - Post-framed buildings - Metal roofs and wall panels - Designs and manufactures buildings for agricultural, commercial, industrial, manufacturing, governmental and service industries - Designs for easy erection - Meets or exceeds local and state codes - Works with local and general contractors - Energy efficient buildings - Offers technical assistance - Employs annually certified welders

Just ten years ago, diesel fuel was the fuel of choice for irrigation engines. At that time, is was much cheaper than natural gas. Producers started purchasing diesel engines and abandoning natural gas.

The Hardy Duel Fuel Mixer comes in a kit, and the cost is $1,595. For more information visit www.donhardyengines.com; or call 806-983-3774.

Today, things are different. Diesel fuel has tripled in price since 2000. Producers had to do something to make operating irrigation engines more affordable. They started mixing natural gas with diesel, and discovered they saved $80-100 on average per day, per engine.

Stoney Creek stocks EasyPro “Sizable” Pond Netting

Don Hardy, owner of Don Hardy Fuel Efficient Engine Services in Floydada, Texas, developed a dual fuel mixer for diesel engines to combine natural gas and diesel. The fuel mixing process could then be done economically, by all producers. In the spring of 2007, Hardy and Leon New, an engineer with the Texas Cooperative Extension Service in Amarillo, tested this mixer on three engines in Floyd County. Two engines were Case IH engines–one waas a turbo-charged, and the other engine, a 4-cylinder non-turbo. The third engine was a John Deere 4T100. During the testing, straight diesel was used, followed by a diesel and natural gas mix. The dual fuel outperformed the diesel on all three engines.

Don’t be limited by a small variety of prepackaged pond netting that does not fit the needs of many pond and stream applications. EasyPro bulk netting is available in 3 widths and 100’ lengths, it can be custom cut to the exact length you desire for a perfect fit every time. This strong black pond netting will last for years keeping ponds clean and fish safe. Netting also prevents poor water quality problems by keeping leaves and other debris from falling into your pond. It can also be used in a variety of settings to protect items in your landscape or farm. This netting features polyethylene strands woven together in a mesh making it very strong.

The Case 4-cylinder had a savings of $1.06 per hour; the John Deere saved $2.40 per hour, and the Case turbo saved a whopping $3.55 per hour.

Hardy says the mixture of natural gas and diesel is “the way to go”, and his mixer is designed to reduce the high costs of running irrigation engines. In the past few years, several producers using the mixer have reported their fuel

What FRE-FLO™ is not: With FRE-FLO™ there are: no chemicals in daily operation, no magnets, no electricity needed, no salts required, nothing added to the water. FRE-FLO™ is not a water softener (water softeners remove minerals from the water, while FRE-FLO™ water conditioning has the big advantage of minerals remaining in water). What FRE-FLO™ does: Simply stated, FRE-FLO™ is green technology engineered to work with nature. FRE-FLO™ works with the ability of calcium carbonate (a very versatile mineral) to have different forms and functions. Its remarkably different forms are seen in nature – such as in marble, limestone, sea shells, and egg shells. From cement to health food supplements, manufacturers use calcium carbonate, further demonstrating its versatility. Water conditioning prevents minerals that cause hardness in water from clumping together into hard deposit build- ups. Catalytic FRE-FLO™ systems change existing hard calcium carbonate deposits, so water can flow freely, while also preventing new deposits from forming. Thus, bottomline, FRE-FLO™ is a water conditioning technology that unclogs soil pores and water-using equipment of hard calcium carbonate deposits.

From a fuel savings standpoint, mixing propane and diesel might have been yet an even cheaper mix–but propane proved to be more cost prohibitive, and made the engines run hotter.
