enison is so much a member of the red meat group that it is nearly impossible to come upon the deer hunting season without comment — especially when it involves family, who has evolved into students of the trade.

case when a deer hunter wakes up to a brisk cool morning with a spring in his step and a loaded muzzle in his hand. It’s the kind of ’unbridled caution' that will turn the best of times and intentions into a disaster for many.

They, like most others, simply took for granted that every venison processor is qualified and trained in the process of cutting and wrapping venison. This became apparent in my college years at NDSU, and it was really driven home when my two daughters married avid hunters.

With the deer hunting season about to open, it seems appropriate to raise the awareness level of the health risks involved in eating uninspected meat – or that which is processed by a novice. Unfortunately, this describes the processing of most venison— thus the reasons for finding lead in the meat, as well as other adulterations and health issues.

They married brothers, of whom neither had ever been exposed to the fine art of venison cuisine. It was chop/chop without much attention to detail, particularly that of wholesomeness and health related inspection issues. This was a challenge that I couldn’t let pass, so I put on my teaching hat and drifted back in time to that vintage period of University meat labs. I’m proud to point out that the Kinneman brothers turned out to be my finest students of the trade. You probably have it figured out that the Kinneman brothers are my sons-inlaw, and they have now joined their younger brother in the business of Kinneman Bros. Venison Meat Processing. The kinship of the Kinnemans (including four grandchildren) is an inordinate relationship, incomparable to that of any other. They have such a passion for the sport, that to take it to the next level seemed only natural — as natural as natures own unbounded creation of beauty. Is there anything more beautiful then that of deer grazing in lush green fields; protected by the sanctuary of a thickly wooded refuge? However, we also know that when man intercedes, the intent of creation also becomes tainted. Such is the

Deer that is properly dressed and processed will be free of any and all foreign material. Utilization of every cut will be maximized and upgraded for value. Scrutiny for health issues such as Chronic Wasting Disease and other abnormalities will be observed and dealt with in a responsible manner. Tissues directly associated with CWD, inclusive of brain, spine, and other affected areas of the carcass will be completely destroyed. A trained eye and a preciosity for cleanliness and sanitation should be the norm for all venison processors. This is simply a statement of caution to make you aware of taking every precaution to keep it clean, keep it dry, keep it cold, and keep it healthy. The Kinneman Bros. adhere to these processing precautions and would advise others to likewise check out such credentials when comparing venison processors. To turn a prejudiced eye translates into huge risk factors when you consider the average novice has no training in the skills of recognizing potential disease carrying characteristics, nor proper meat processing procedures.

These are disconcerting issues, for which many ignore. But Chronic Wasting Disease may be the wakeup call that will give venison its due-diligence. CWD is a fatal brain disease that is found to be spreading in deer and elk across this entire country. Although experts say there is no scientific evidence the disease can infect humans, the World Health Organization advices people not to eat any part of a deer with evidence of the disease. In spite of this presumptuous evidence, hunters are demanding to know whether the deer they kill this fall will have the disease. Unfortunately, testing is the only way to find out. But, be aware that affected animals will appear sick – thin, weak, emaciated – a fact that doesn’t go unnoticed with the Kinneman Bros. This information is not intended to raise unfounded fear; rather, it is to inform you about the health risks of red meat when due diligence is ignored — and to further embrace and support the Federal Meat Inspection Program. It points out that this program is vital to the welfare of the meat industry, or it would go untamed, suffering the ramifications of venison, which at best, is indisputably unsettling. Not a pretty picture, but it is an issue that I’ve been concerned about for many years. Back in my college years at North Dakota State University, I can remember venison being processed that was genuinely unfit for human consumption. I worked my way through college working for the Meat and Animal Science Department in various capacities. But, the most profitable venue was that of processing deer. In a good long evening I could process four deer at the income rate of $25.00 per head. An income

of $100.00 per day was unthinkable back in those days, so I always enjoyed the false sense of being rich for at least a few weeks out of the year. After being married for 50-plus years, I now realize that it conjured up other false feelings. Living in a trailer house located on campus, just a few blocks from the meat lab, gave my wife an accessible view to see when the lab lights were turned off. She always made mention of the fact that this was how she knew when to expect me home. I thought she was just anxious to see me, little did I know it was all about the money. Making the money was a bonus, but seeing the deteriorated condition of deer carcasses was enough to turn me away from venison for a good long time. Many would be brought in on the hood of a hot car, warm temperatures, and with the appearance of being eviscerated with pinking shears. As apparently audacious as this now seems, I have since come to realize this presented a potentially hazardous health risk. Hope this has raised your awareness level of properly handling and processing venison — and may all of your hunting experiences be approached with a cautious sense of health risk, and a renewed appreciation for those involved in the sport, like that of the Kinneman Bros, who take venison processing to a higher level of integrity. These relationships started long before they were married to my daughters, Deb and Pam. They were courting Ron and Randy (brothers), and instead of whispering sweet nothings in their ear, they must have whispered a secret about their Dad’s knowledge about meat processing. That was about 30 years ago, and the brothers have done nothing but get bigger and more sophisticated in their meat processing skills. It intrigued their younger brother so much that

he went on to study at a certified meat processing school, and is now the boss of the operation — Kinneman Bros. Deer Processing. I thought our good father/son relationship was all about me, but it didn’t take long to find out it was more about what I could teach them about deer processing. The boys are serious, passionate deer hunters, so any skills I could bring to the table were welcomed with open arms. Again, I thought it was just a warm embrace, little did I know they were grabbing for a knife with their other hand, not just any knife, for they were soon to learn the value of sharp and presentation.

Once you experience the difference yourself you’ll never go back to the hackers. There is so little known about how to properly process venison that most of it ends up being a total waste. If you aren’t willing to pay a little extra to make your hunt worth the time and expense, then it must just be about the hunting experience. But it could be about so much more. Most Americans take food for granted If you’ve ever tossed leftovers or overripe fruit without considering tomorrow’s lunch or creative baking, you’re part of the problem. “We throw away 242 pounds of food per person per year,” said Brad Morgan, senior food safety and production efficiency specialist with Pfizer Animal Health. That’s about 1,400 calories per person per day, and roughly 1.3 billion tons of food per year. Morgan shared these facts at this year’s Feeding Quality Forum in Grand Island, Neb., and Amarillo, Texas. “We spend about 7% of our disposable income to feed our families,” he said. “In Europe they spend anywhere from 13% to 28% of their income. What am I getting at? One, we take food for granted. Two, it’s cheap. And three, we always expect it to be there.” But many have heard the stats pointing to the need to feed 9 to 10 billion people by 2050. That’ll take more technology for

Reducing waste is one part of the global food supply equation. “It’s just the right thing to do,” Morgan said. The other variable is increasing production, which requires new innovations. But Morgan cautioned that it can’t be at the expense of consumer satisfaction.

“In World War I, they talked about food as a weapon. Don’t waste it. Buy it wisely,” he said, “World War II they said it again. Rationing, grow your victory gardens, do your part.” As prices escalate, the conversation turns in that direction again. “Whenever we have times like this, I think it forces us to do things we never would have done before,” Morgan said. Other countries provide examples. In South Korea, they charge citizens for food waste disposal. During the first year of implementation they cut food waste by 20%, or $4.3 billion worth. A Universal Skid Steer Adapter for standard pin-on loaders is now available from Worksaver, Inc., to increase pin-on loader productivity by converting to the skid steer attachment. The unit is 54” wide and 21.5” high and can be paired with standard pin-on brackets or interfacing brackets from Worksaver.

Hiniker recently introduced a new VOD Variable Orifice Distributor for anhydrous ammonia application rate control. The 17 port VOD controls anhydrous flow by simultaneously varying the orifice opening at all 17 distribution ports, maintaining pressure all the way to the distribution point. A typical NH3 rate control system uses a ball valve or butterfly valve to regulate flow prior to the point of distribution. The pressure drop created at the outlet of the pressure valve can allow anhydrous ammonia to flash into a vapor, creating an erratic mix of liquid and vapor. This varying mixture then flows to a manifold for distribution to each knife. The Hiniker VOD system eliminates the pressure reducing ball or butterfly valve from the process. The result is near tank pressure with a liquid state maintained all the way to the point of distribution, allowing more consistent distribution and superior knife-to-knife accuracy, all without the need for a pressure pump.

Sheyenne Tooling and Manufacturing has introduced its new 600CT snowblower for compact tractors. It features the industry’s first concentric-axis design, meaning the impeller and auger rotate on the same shaft to improve performance and reduce maintenance concerns. Additionally, the standard quick-attach, front-mount design of the blower allows full articulation of the loader’s arms during operation.

Hydronic Radiant Floor Heat 101

The popularity of radiant floor heat and sales are rising each year, and more and more consumers are adding radiant floor heating systems to their projects and improvements. Radiant floor heat creates some questions when first starting. In this article series, I will explain the key points of radiant floor heat, and give you the confidence to start including radiant floor heat in your projects. –by LES GRAHAM

What information is needed to get a project started? The design needs to be done by someone who has a background in the business. I won’t bore you with the details of design, but listed below is an theoretic example of what information a designer would need to get you started. • Dimensions of building; width, length and height

• What is the purpose of the building (example: farm shop, body shop, etc.) • Any obstructions, such as division walls, trench drains, hoist, mechanics pit, etc. • How many concrete pours? • Type of fasteners (zip ties, staples, screw clips) • Heat Loss; R-values, door sizes, window sizes, inside temperature, etc. With the above information, a designer can suggest loop layout, on center spacing, loop lengths, pump sizing, boiler sizing, etc.

What kinds of problems have occurred with radiant floor heat? Over the years, I’ve mainly ran into design type problems. Very rarely have I seen an installation problem. Some of the design problems I’ve encountered are: • Too long of loop lengths. • Too small of pumps or heat source. • Incorrect on center spacing of the loops. • Layout patterns not matching the building.

• Pour quality products. (I find it ironic that when an expensive building is being built, and someone wants to save $300.00 on floor tubing that is encased in concrete.) • A few people have cut or drilled into their loops. Most of those have carefully chiseled concrete away and fixed the tubing with a coupler. One installation problem that I was told about was when an installer did not use enough fasteners with a Pex tubing. The Pex tubing was springing up to the surface as the power trowel was going over the pour. The trowel cut the tubing in several places – not a pretty picture!

Final thoughts/ Summary Hydronic radiant floor heat is here to stay, and has many benefits when compared to conventional heating systems. It is pretty simple when starting a project. You need to consider insulation under and around the perimeter, weather you want to use Pex-Al-Pex or regular Pex, and you need to have a design person involved. Heating and cooling costs account for about $1,000 – nearly half of a home's total annual energy bill. Maintaining the efficiency of your home's heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system can have a big effect on your utility bills. Dirt and neglect can impact the efficiency of your HVAC system and are some of the top causes of heating system failure. Energy Star-qualified light strings use about 65 percent less electricity than incandescent light strings and are available in a variety of colors, shapes and lengths. They save energy and are more durable, shockresistant and cooler to the touch. If every decorative light string sold in the U.S. this year were Energy Star qualified, Americans would save $80 million in utility bills and one billion pounds of greenhouse gas emissions would be prevented. 4. Lower the temperature in your home to increase savings up to 12 percent. Control your home’s temperature while away or asleep by using one of the pre-programmed settings. Programming the thermostat to turn the temperature down 8 degrees for 7 hours each night and an additional 7 hours each weekday could result in a seasonal heating savings of approximately 12 percent. For the average home, this could result in savings of about $180. 5. Check for water leaks and install WaterSense products to save approximately $170 per year. The average household spends as much as $500 per year on their water and sewer bill, but approximately $170 per year can be saved by installing water-efficient fixtures and appliances.

6. Reduce your food waste. Feed people, not landfills. Food is the single largest type of waste going to landfills and incinerators. Americans disposed of approximately 33 million tons of food waste in 2010. When excess food, leftover food, and food scraps are disposed of in a landfill, they decompose and become a significant source of methane – a potent greenhouse gas. Much of the food that is discarded in landfills is actually safe, wholesome food that could have been used to feed people. So when you are thinking about making your family dinner, think about how you can reduce your food waste to save money, help communities, and protect the environment. 7. Look for the Design for the Environment label on more than 2,800 products during winter cleaning. EPA's Designed for the Environment (DfE) logo differentiates products that use only the safest ingredients to protect people, our pets, and the environment. In 2011, Americans using DfE products cut the use of harmful chemicals by more than 756 million pounds. 8. Test your home for radon gas, 1 in 15 homes may have elevated levels. Radon, a colorless odorless gas, is the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers and levels can increase during colder months. Purchase an affordable Do-It-Yourself test kit online or at a local hardware store to determine the level in your home. Addressing high levels often costs the same as other minor home repairs. (www.epa.gov/radon) 9. Learn before you burn and cut firewood use by more than 30 percent. The Burn Wise program has best burn practices to help better protect your home and your health. Never burn garbage, cardboard, ocean driftwood or wet wood. If you replace an old wood stove with a more efficient one, efficiency can increase by 50 percent, 1/3 less wood can be used for the same heat and 70 percent less particle pollution indoors and out are produced. 10. Prevent Pests. Now is the time when pests such as insects and rodents may try to move indoors. Eliminate sources of food, water, and shelter to reduce pest problems. Prevent pests by using caulk to eliminate cracks, repair water leaks, remove clutter, and clean up crumbs and other food sources. If you decide to use a pesticide, read the label first. The pesticide label is your guide to using pesticides safely and effectively. It contains pertinent information that you should read and understand before you use a pesticide product.

Competent, Brave Widows Who Farm Recently a widow whose husband passed earlier this year asked me to address the topic of how to keep on farming. She said “I’m finding out it isn’t going to be easy but I want to try.” “Linda” and her husband farmed together since they married in their teens almost 40 years ago. Linda wants to continue the farm operation with her son-in-law, who has helped for the past several years. Linda also found support from her brother-in-law, who helped her find a lawyer who charged by the hour, instead of their farm business lawyer who asked a fee of two percent of the value of the estate. She also found that several of the landlords from whom they leased farmland wanted a one-year lease. “I think they believe I won’t want to continue,” Linda said. After expressing my sympathy to Linda I also expressed my admiration for her bravery. I remembered an article I had reviewed and recommended for publication in a 2001 issue of the Journal of Agricultural Safety and Health by University of Kentucky researchers, Amy Scheerer and Victoria Brandt. Scheerer and Brandt reported that the seven farm widows they interviewed “had little time for bereavement when much of their time and attention was directed toward necessary chores and making decisions about economic issues of the farm.” Linda also found what Scheerer and Brandt further reported: “support from family, friends and neighbors went beyond emotional comforting to providing help with farm chores and guidance on financial decisions.” Linda has many female cohorts in the farming industry. According to a 2011 United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization report, women make up 43 percent of the agricultural labor force in developing nations around the world. More often, these females are agricultural laborers than farm operators. In the U.S. women comprise 14 percent of the main operators of some 2.2M farms, which is up from previous years, as reported in the most recent (i.e., 2007) U.S. Census of Agriculture. The 2007 Census December 2012

of Agriculture indicates that the average U.S. farm headed by women is smaller (i.e., 210 acres) than the average of all U.S. farms (i.e., 418 acres), and more likely devoted to vegetable or specialized animal (e.g., dairy, long-haired goat) production. But women comprise 67 percent of second operators of U.S. farms that have more than a single operator. These women are doing far more than “keeping the books” and handling the paperwork at the Farm Service Agency. Like Linda--who says she is running the combine this fall, almost half of women who operate U.S. farms are managing the livestock (e.g., swine, dairy) unit and field cropping. Women are also more likely than their husbands to be working off the farm, when both spouses are alive. When faced with the loss of their spouses, farm women have tough decisions to make: “Will there be enough income if I quit my job to take over the farm? Will I be able to afford the health insurance that came with my job? Am I up to the task of running the farm?”

In Linda’s case, she likes farming and she has the help of a son-in-law and daughter who desire to farm. It can be said of Linda and her surviving family: “Farming— it’s in their blood.” In Linda’s situation, like other farm families, reminders of the lost loved one are constantly present on the farm because work roles and family life are blurred together in the same place. From time to time Linda may need breaks away from the farm to obtain new perspective. I am grateful to Linda for her willingness to share her situation with me and with readers of the Farm and Ranch Life column. She reviewed and approved this article. She deserves our highest respect.

Linda grew up on a farm and helped her husband with farm work during all their years together, so she was familiar with the complex demands of running a farming operation. But as she lamented, “I’m finding that everyday there are many challenging issues and I am trying to hold it together and keep building what my husband and I had worked so hard for in the last 39 years.” Linda’s comment brings up a matter that Scheerer and Brandt also observed: “Three [of seven] women felt an initial need to maintain the farm in honor of their husbands, and were hesitant to make changes after the death. The farm was a connection of home, family, work and income, which provided livelihood, purpose, common goals, and sense of self.” Key questions that must eventually be decided are these: “Am I taking over the farm operation to preserve my husband’s wishes and his memory? Are there children or others whose farming methods I approve and who will benefit and perhaps take over or help me?”

Shop Smart For those of us on really limited budgets, this time of year can be totally frustrating. The kids want ‘such and such’ and there is n0 way said item is in the cards. We went to the re-sale shops when our children were in school and needed nice clothing for the Christmas program at school and church. My boys were the blue jeans and t-shirt kind of kids, and to pay $30 for a white shirt to be worn just once? Not a chance! I would pay $2 for a nearly-new one at the thrift store and they looked just as nice as any of the other children. Little Tree for Cheap I have a little friend that wants a ‘pink’ Christmas tree for her bedroom. The one at the store cost $20, plus the decorations that you need to add. I had a small tree (green) that I got at a yard sale for 50 cents a few years ago. It came with a string of 10 lights and one little silver garland. I bought a can of pink spray paint on sale for $2 and sprayed several coats of ‘pink’ paint on the green tree to make it pink. I put the lights back on the tree, wrapped the silver garland around it, cut some ‘christmas ornaments’ from old Christmas cards, used thread for the hangers and put them on the pink tree. She will have her tree to enjoy for a couple of years until she grows tired of it, and then the branches will be recycled into a wreath for the door – all for $2.50! –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

A 50-cent bottle of rubbing alcohol is a great cleaner for kitchen appliances. It takes off smudges, fingerprints, and smeared chocolate frosting. It dries nice and fast, and doesn’t streak.

Wire a hanger on the back of the wreath with part of the wire, then thread lengths of wire through the sunflower head in about four places so you can anchor it to the middle of the straw wreath.

Baking Hints (shared by my old neighbor, Laura)

When you bake bread, take it out of the pan as soon as it comes out of the oven and let it cool completely on a wire rack. If you want a soft crust, brush the loaves with softened butter as soon as they come out of the oven Remove muffins from the tins as soon as they come out of the oven. I use a pair of needle nosed pliers to get mine out...otherwise, they get soggy on the bottom. When making ‘butter cakes’ such as pound cakes, or any layer cakes – white, chocolate or any other flavor, soften the butter/shortening so it blends in easily with the sugar before you add the flour mixture. If you have no toothpicks to use for cake testers, a piece of uncooked spaghetti will do nicely instead. Let any butter cake stand for 10 minutes in the pan after removing it from the oven. Run a kitchen knife around the edge of the pan, put a cake rack on top of the cake and flip it. The cake will come out of the pan onto the rack upside down. Use a second rack to reposition (flip) the cake right side up to finish cooling. Laura would offer a cake for any occasion and used this ‘double flip’ method to get her cakes right side up. She also took cardboard boxes and cut cake trays from the bottoms, covered them with aluminum foil and placed the cake on the ‘tray’. She never had to worry about finding the cake pan before she went home, and the remaining cake could be given to anyone who needed a little ‘extra sweetness’. ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

Christmas Ornaments A neighbor of mine uses gingerbread cookies to decorate her Christmas tree. They are iced with a white icing and a few sprinkles. She hangs them with grocery twine and after Christmas, the tree, cookies and all, goes outdoors for the ‘feathered friends’ among us to feast on. (submitted by DP, IA)

Clear Your Home Entryway of Fall & Winter Clutter As fall turns to winter, tiny rocks that stick to the bottoms of shoes and socks, damp leaves that plaster themselves to the floor, mud smears, and sometimes road salt and snow track their way through our doorways. What are we to do? The entryway of a home makes the first impression on guests and family members alike, but it can be hard to keep this high-traffic spot as attractive, clean and tidy as we want it. Here are a few suggestions to control clutter, organize, and beautify this busy location. Incoming! My entryway could quickly turn into a jumble of shopping bags, footwear, mittens, gloves, newspapers, mail, backpacks, and anything else anyone in my family decides to bring home. I fight back by using the “h” word. The “h” word again is habit. I try to instill in my family the importance of immediately putting what is brought home in its final location rather than leaving piles in the entryway. Contents of shopping bags get dispersed where they belong in the house. Grocery bags go straight to the kitchen. Coats get hung up in the closet, and backpacks go upstairs to the bedrooms. The next problem is stuff we don’t mean to bring in with us—the dirt, sand, and sludge that comes in on our feet. All shoes must come off at the door. Every time. No cheating. Shoes can be kept off the floor in a boot tray to catch the dirt and water. Cleaning experts tell us that over ninety percent of the dirt we vacuum, dust, and wipe up in our homes comes in through the door, so let’s stop dirt before it enters our home. Keep some slip-on shoes by the door to make it easier not to cheat, even when you just need to run back into the house to grab something you forgot or you want to step out for the mail or newspaper, and keep slippers by the door so your feet are warm and comfortable in your home. Outgoing! Just as stuff constantly flows into a home, it is also going out. Library books, packages, mail, and DVDs to be returned must be remembered. It helps to have a designated spot by the door to grab these things as you leave. A shelf or a basket is a nice spot to put them to keep them organized and off the floor. Both! Transition stuff is the stuff that constantly goes in and out of the house—keys, footwear, sunglasses, mittens and gloves are examples. Again, it helps to have homes for these items in the entryway. Keys could go on hooks or small shelves or in hanging baskets. Footwear could be stored under a bench or in a boot tray, and mittens or gloves could go in a basket or bin. I am very happy with my boot bench. It combines a boot tray with a bench with a lidded storage seat that holds mittens, A12

gloves, scarves, and dog leashes. Entryway décor can be attractive and functional. Baskets, hooks, and shelving can decorate and help keep things organized. Mirrors can beautify small or dark entries by reflecting more light, and they are nice for a quick appearance check as people head in or out of the home. Brass coat hooks or wooden hat trees are attractive and functional. Lighting and ceiling fans can be used to decorate and brighten an entryway. I like my fan and light for circulating air, creating visual movement, and providing light right where we need it when we are trying to tie our shoes. Entryway maintenance, especially in a cold climate, is a challenge. Replace worn weather stripping and door sweeps to keep dirt and cold air out. Repaint the scuffed up doorsill and keep it clean. I am lazy. I admit it. I would rather keep the mess outside in the first place than have to deal with it in my house. Use commercial grade outdoor mats to knock dirt off feet at each entrance before it can get into your home. Place a washable rug, like a bathroom or kitchen rug, inside of entryways. The hard flat decorative mats that say “Welcome” may be cute, but after they are saturated with dirt, they don’t work. They no longer stop dirt from getting past the entryway and tracked down your hallway, stairs, or living room. A soft-backed rug can be washed when it gets saturated with dirt and starts to smell. Confession: Sometimes I have walked into my house and thought it smelled stale, only to discover it was just time to wash my entryway rugs. Oops. All this being said, it is still important to regularly sweep or vacuum entryways, hallways, and other high traffic spots at home. Make sure whatever method you choose is safe for your flooring surface and won’t scratch it! Sweeping scratchy materials like sand or vacuuming with a sharp edge on the underside of the vacuum or leaving the beater bar running on the vacuum can harm some surfaces. Carefully clean up entryway grime before it cuts up linoleum flooring, dulls grout between tiles, scratches wood flooring, or wears down carpet fibers. It is worth the effort. Who knows? The Blame Game: Knowing where to place it makes all the difference It’s your fault. It’s all your fault. Everything wrong in your life is entirely your fault. Thank goodness for that! If it wasn’t your fault, then what control could you possibly have over making it better? But it’s not politically correct to write these things. If you are unemployed, it’s because of a lousy boss, the bad economy or terrible political leadership. If you have diabetes, it’s because of genes you inherited or the lack of money or time to eat properly. We are conditioned to believe that it is decidedly NOT our fault. We’re told it’s never our fault. Our weight problem is not because we drink too much soda, it’s because the evil convenience stores provide cups that are too large. We watch presidential debates where both candidates clamor over each other to tell the American public either how government is to blame or how government will fix everything, but we hear nothing about the individual’s role. Few are willing to accept that they are responsible for their life, but for those who do, it changes everything. Everywhere you look, you will find an escape hatch from personal responsibility. But what’s the harm, really? If you can sleep a little better thinking you’re not to blame, is that such a bad thing? Isn’t it better to feel good about yourself rather than blame yourself for your problems? No. Not even a little. Because every time you abdicate responsibility by blaming someone or something else, you weaken your ability to do the one thing that can improve your life – to take action to change it.

But some things really aren’t your fault. Bad things happen to good people all the time. Trust me; I’ve had my share of crises just like everyone else. The moment calamity strikes, you always have two possible reactions: You can immediately look outward to find fault with someone or something else, or you can look inward and figure out what you need to do to get whole again. Is it your fault the company you worked so hard for went out of business? No. But it is entirely your responsibility that you are unemployed and entirely your responsibility to secure another job. I write this not to rub salt in the wounds of the millions who are unemployed and struggling, but to offer it as a gift – the gift of accepting personal responsibility for whatever happens. It’s nearly impossible to find a new job when you are stuck blaming your old employer. It’s hard to improve your marriage when all you can do is blame your spouse for what’s not working. It’s hard to lose weight when you exert more effort blaming others instead of working out at the gym. You cannot achieve success and happiness by giving anyone or anything control. And that’s exactly what you are doing when you point the finger – you are giving something outside of yourself the control and the power. Blame has never got anyone a job, a closer marriage or better health. Historic Irma Harding Brand Revitalized To Promote New Product Line

etty Crocker ®, Aunt Jemima® and Quaker Oats© are common household names. In the 1950s, there was another popular name among rural families: Irma Harding ®.

Irma served as the spokeswoman for International Harvester refrigerators and freezers and promoted the products to U.S. farm women. “Irma Harding is a wonderful part of our International Harvester history,” says Sarah Pickett, Case IH Licensing and Merchandising Manager. “We are proud to introduce the Irma Harding name under our heritage International Harvester brand as well as a new line of products that evoke the American heritage Irma represents.” The first product available will be Irma Harding peanuts, which will be sold at select retailers, including Tractor Supply Company. These peanuts are the first new licensed item in the food and food-related product category under the heritage International Harvester brand. Case IH is partnering with Whitley’s Peanut Company, a traditional nut and snack food company, to bring Irma Harding Peanuts to store shelves. The peanuts are high-quality and slow-roasted, packaged with a unique look that connects with rural Americana. “We are excited to be partnering with Whitley’s Peanut Factory to provide the finest nuts, chosen to meet strict size, quality and freshness criteria for our Irma Harding peanuts,” explains Pickett. In 1947, International Harvester developed refrigerator and freezer lines and created Irma Harding as the character spokeswoman. Her authentic and rural “personality” appealed to U.S. farm women when these new products were introduced to them. International Harvester hired five home economists to answer inquiries and conduct cooking and testing experiments in company kitchens on Irma’s behalf. In addition, 70 home economists and sales women were hired throughout the U.S. to travel regionally and educate homemakers of the day about freezing and preserving food. Through various sales tools, including advertisements and recipe booklets, Irma Harding also helped educate housewives about the health and financial benefits of using cooling and freezing techniques and food storage systems. Irma also appeared on packaging and “authored” many cookbooks. With a persona that is deeply rooted in America’s rural history, the products Irma now represents invoke memories of all that was and still is good in American households and homemaking. Just ten years ago, diesel fuel was the fuel of choice for irrigation engines. At that time, is was much cheaper than natural gas. Producers started purchasing diesel engines and abandoning natural gas. Today, things are different. Diesel fuel has tripled in price since 2000. Producers had to do something to make operating irrigation engines more affordable. They started mixing natural gas with diesel, and discovered they saved $80-100 on average per day, per engine.

Don Hardy, owner of Don Hardy Fuel Efficient Engine Services in Floydada, Texas, developed a dual fuel mixer for diesel engines to combine natural gas and diesel. The fuel mixing process could then be done economically, by all producers.

Stop filter fuel gelling in cold weather To help prevent diesel/biodiesel fuel gelling in cold weather, E-Tip, Inc. introduces the Universal Fuel Filter Preheater™ that mounts easily to the engine fuel filter. It is just one in an extensive line of products for cold weather starting, security, safety and maintenance. Cold conditions often affect fuel flow during start-up and in daily operations. When it is cold enough to cause fuel gelling, over-theroad trucks, heavy machinery, automobiles, generators and other equipment that must operate in low temperatures can become disabled. The gelling plugs the filter, preventing fuel passage. The only solutions are to replace the filter or warm up the fuel until it flows again, requiring towing the equipment to an inside location or bringing a heater to the equipment site. The Universal Fuel Filter Preheater™ offers a simple solution. It is a thin, flexible, silicone/ fiberglass heating pad that easily wraps around the metal filterhousing to maintain full contact and evenly transmit heat quickly. It converts the metal filterhousing into the heating element, acting an electric blanket for the fuel filterhousing.

In the spring of 2007, Hardy and Leon New, an engineer with the Texas Cooperative Extension Service in Amarillo, tested this mixer on three engines in Floyd County. Two engines were Case IH engines–one waas a turbo-charged, and the other engine, a 4-cylinder non-turbo. The third engine was a John Deere 4T100. During the testing, straight diesel was used, followed by a diesel and natural gas mix. The dual fuel outperformed the diesel on all three engines. The Case 4-cylinder had a savings of $1.06 per hour; the John Deere saved $2.40 per hour, and the Case turbo saved a whopping $3.55 per hour.

Put a Plan in Place for Winter Feeding of Your Herd One nutritionist shares insights on feeding through the coming cold. To be successful this winter, producers must maintain adequate body condition scores (BCS) within their herds. Ted Perry, beef nutritionist with Purina Animal Nutrition, says healthy body condition through the cold hinges on quality nutrition. “Winter months can be a challenging time to feed cattle as you never know how wet or cold the weather is going to be,” says Perry. But one thing is certain: as the red line on the thermometer decreases, the energy needs of the cow herd will increase. If these extra energy needs aren’t accounted for in the diet, cows will begin to lose weight and the herd could be susceptible to problems that spread beyond the winter season and producers could see complications through spring calving and summer breeding. “Some producers may be headed into winter with already under-conditioned cows,” he says. “With the tight supply of forages, many producers have been limit-feeding cows to hold onto their feed. These cows will need extra nutrients to move back to ideal body condition.” The winter is no time to scrimp on calories. “Cow’s need extra energy,” notes Perry, who advises producers consider supplementing forages. “In addition to higher requirements for maintenance, the cows are supporting a growing calf. The calf requires significant nutrients in the second and third trimester.”

Many choices for supplementation on the market can help the cow herd best utilize nutrients provided and remain in adequate body condition through all seasons. Supplement options include hand-feeding cubes, self-feeding rations and molasses-based tubs. Self-fed, intake-modifying feed technologies can be an excellent way to provide feed which, in turn, helps cows to manage forage utilization. Research from the University of Nebraska shows long-term benefits to supplementing the diet. In one study conducted during the late fall, cows that were supplemented with protein were compared to cows that received no supplement. The supplemented cows fared much better. Cows that had no supplement lost 64 pounds and dropped an average of 0.6 BCS points with an average body condition score of 4.6 on a 9-point scale. Animals that received the protein supplement maintained body weight and condition and had an average BCS of 5.2. [1] Researchers further examined the impact the protein supplementation had on the offspring of these animals. Heifers from protein-supplemented dams had higher pre-breeding body weights and higher body weights at pregnancy diagnosis than heifers from non-supplemented dams. When it came time to calve, heifers from protein-supplemented dams continued to outperform their counterparts. In the initial 21 days of the

calving season, 77 percent of the heifers from proteinsupplemented dams calved in compared to 49 percent for heifers born to nonsupplemented cows. [2] “The data from Nebraska provides the impetus for producers to seriously look at forage supplements this year if they haven’t already,” says Perry.
