he first time you meet Donald Zolan, you have the feeling of meeting an old friend whom you just haven’t seen for awhile. His warmth, candor and interest in others can disguise the fact that he’s one of our nation’s most talented and popular artists. A very positive and forward looking man, he’s at peace with himself and his world. The love and joy you see in his paintings are a sincere expression of himself. A fifth generation artist, Zolan began drawing at age three, and, by age five, was working in watercolors and winning local competitions. He won his first major art competition at age thirteen and was awarded a scholarship to the prestigious Art Institute of Chicago. By sixteen, he won a scholarship to Chicago’s American Academy of Art. Full-time formal training began after high school with a full scholarship to the American Academy of Fine Art. Upon graduation, he was selected to apprentice with Haddon Sundblom, a famous Chicago illustrator most known for his Coca-Cola Santa Claus. Zolan moved into the field of commercial art, where he was a great success over the next twelve years. His true love, however, was his fine art paintings which were shown in leading galleries and museums around the world. By the 1970’s, he finally established his own gallery on Nantucket Island. In 1977, the President of the Bradford Exchange visited a Chicago gallery and was so impressed with Zolan’s paintings of children that he decided to commission a new work for a collector plate. One April afternoon, Zolan was watching his son blowing a dandelion in the backyard. Inspired by the wonder and fascination of his young son blowing a dandelion, he created his famous painting – Erik and Dandelion - which launched his thirty year collectible career. This new work immediately became Plate of the Year, the first of countless awards Zolan won as a limited edition collectible artist. Zolan’s work soared in popularity with collectors and his

images were soon licensed on a wide range of products by more than 25 national and international companies, spanning the globe from the Americas, to Europe, and to Australia. In 2008, Zolan introduced a new collection of Santa Claus paintings inspired by his apprenticeship with Haddon Sundblom. Introduced at the New York Licensing Show, Zolan’s new collection captivated and excited collectors with his amazing portrayals of the traditional jolly Americana Santa. As Sundblom created his Santas for the Coke corporation, Zolan too has introduced a new collection of John Deere Santa’s. Zolan is continually inspired by his happy childhood in Brookfield, IL. His parents fully supported and nurtured their son’s talent, and, by his own admission, Zolan had an idyllic childhood. In his own words, Zolan recalls, “Each painting is emblematic of my happy and carefree childhood days growing up in the Heartland. Life was an adventure with my dog, Skipper, always discovering something new and exciting in my little world.” All of Zolan’s paintings rekindle a spark of nostalgia in each of us as the warmth and richness of his work touches the heart and enlivens the soul. This love and joy is reflected in his works. The unique combination of a subject matter so close to his heart and incredible talent, nurtured through years of technical training and experience, make Zolan’s paintings among the most popular in the world. what’s new» New Trailer Brake Load-Apportioning-Valve for use with MICO MOBEUS EH Brake Systems
MICO MOBEUS EH systems are designed to provide state-of-the-art vehicular braking control of Off-Highway and Agricultural vehicles and trailers.
MICO, Incorporated introduces a trailer brake Load-Apportioning-Valve (LAV) for use with MICO MOBEUS EH brake systems on Agriculture and other Off-Highway vehicles and trailers. The new LAV proportions trailer brake pressure utilizing a tow vehicle’s hydraulic brake signal in conjunction with real-time trailer load sensing to continuously control pressurereduction braking to the trailer brakes without utilization of tank-pressure. The result is load sensitive trailer braking that reduces the occurrence of trailer wheel lock-up or skidding.
____________________________________
Trailer load is sensed by the load apportioning valve and the output pressure from the valve modifies output trailer brake pressure in accordance with the current weight of the trailer load. As trailer-load is increased or decreased, the trailer brake pressure is changed proportionally. Lighter loads induce lower trailer brake pressures whereas higher loads result in higher trailer brake pressures.
For more information contact MICO Strategic Product Manager, Doug Lamoureux, at dlamoureux@mico. com.

The tank’s high-impact plastic body is durable yet lightweight, and the heavy-duty pump resists corrosion.
MICO MOBEUS LAV provides several benefits for the end user, including:
The design of the Easy Access building makes it ideal for large equipment storage, commodity storage, salt/ sand storage and as a livestock barn. “Our goal is to offer a versatile building with features our customers need,” states Ben Hogervorst, President. The Easy Access building can be customized to suit one’s building needs with doors, ends, ventilation and various foundation options.
BRITESPAN Building Systems Inc. has successfully engineered a new and innovative building series named the “Easy Access”. Its unique feature is that it allows one to have easy access the entire building from the side. Britespan Building Systems Inc. is the first fabric building manufacturer in the industry to offer a standard side entrance, with the same bright inside environment.
Preformed Line Products announced the national launch of Ranchmate™, a line of measurably superior wire fence construction and repair products. The AgSystems Division of Preformed Line Products (PLP) has applied its proprietary technology – originally developed for the utility industry nearly 70 years ago – to its Ranchmate products for use with high tensile smooth and barbed wire fencing. With Ranchmate, now farmers and ranchers can build and mend fences like utility linesman have built and fixed overhead conductor lines for decades. Founded in 1947, PLP is known across the globe as a designer, manufacturer and supplier of cable and fiber optics for communications, solar and energy markets. “Ranchmate capitalizes on our proven technology that has become the standard in communications, solar and energy industries and brings it to farmers and ranchers,” says Ryan Ruhlman, manager of new business development and marketing communications for PLP.
The Easy Access’ 15’ high side entrance is ideal for equipment and hay storage. Farmers will have easy access to their 1st, 2nd or 3rd cuts of hay simultaneously – the same as one would in a conventional building. Customers can orientate their building to allow convenient traffic flow and “easy access” to the side of the building. This new building design is manufactured of heavy walled pipe and is hot dip galvanized post-fabrication for maximum longevity. It is available in 38’, 46’, 60’ and 67’ widths and can be constructed to any length required.

The Brush Blazer features a hydrostatic track drive system for smooth, efficient operation in a variety of terrains and conditions. The track system and the front-end sled configuration provide exceptional traction while also ensuring stability when working on steep grades or slopes. Additionally, the track design minimizes the ground pressure of the 1,250-pound unit to only three pounds per square inch, making it an effective tool for even the most sensitive areas. And, because it is relatively small and compact, the Brush Blazer is ideal for hard-to-reach areas where commercial attachments, skid steers or other equipment may be too large.

Fisher Introduces the XV2 V-plow Snow Plow The Fisher XV2 V-plow provides a new standard in Vplow performance and durability. “While retaining the best of our popular XtremeV™ V-plow, the new XV2 adds performance and durability features that take Vplow productivity and reliability to another level,” said Andy McArdle, Fisher Engineering Product Manager. “The most noticeable change is the extreme flared blade design. The blades now rise from a 31-inch center height up to 39 inches at the outer edge on the 9’6” models.”
The Brush Blazer’s rotary brush cutting system features two half-inch-thick steel discs, each with three hardened steel flail blades. The weight of the discs and the mass of the blades give the unit the strength and momentum needed to plow through tall grass, tough brush and woody material. The flail blades are easy to sharpen and are double sided for extra longevity. PECO’s brush cutter features easy-to-use controls for smooth, safe operation. Two levers for speed and steering operate similar to a zero-turn mower. An operator presence safety switch requires pressure to run the engine, ensuring operator safety during use. The self-propelled unit has infinitely variable speeds up to 5 mph, making operation efficient and easy – even when clearing steep ditches or rough terrain.

Western Introduces the Prodigy® Multi-Position Winged Snow Plow The Western Prodigy snow plow thinks for itself – delivering multi-position winged plow performance in a unit that’s as easy to operate as a straight blade. Thanks to its patented mechanical wing design the Western Prodigy automatically positions its wings to deliver maximum plowing efficiency whether in straight-ahead scoop mode or when angled for windrowing. The Prodigy plow is available for both truck and skid-steer loader applications. “When positioned for straight-ahead plowing, both wings automatically angle forward, defaulting to a ‘scoop’ position that clears an 8-foot 7-inch swath,” said Doug Clark, Western Products Product Manager. As the blade angles left or right for windrowing, the heavy-duty coil compression springs and cable assembly pull the trailing wing back until it aligns with the moldboard while the leading wing remains angled forward to capture more snow and clear a 7-foot 10-inch swath. “With the leading wing angled forward for windrowing,” said Clark, “you’ll maximize windrowing efficiency since you can take a bigger bite on every pass with minimum spill-off.”
Standard truck-mounted PRODIGY plow features include the Western FLEET FLEX electrical system for true fleet interchangeability with programmable features like “soft-stop”, “one-touch float” and the SECURITY GUARD™ anti-theft system. Prodigy also incorporates the enhanced UltraMount® 2 mounting system with its new one-piece frame design for added strength and durability – providing simple mechanical hook-up with an exclusive rotating pivot bar for accurate drive-in alignment on uneven terrain. Given about 50,000 annual miles of use per trailer, McCullough estimates ROI as fast as 18 months on the new flatbed trailers in reduced maintenance-replacement cost and streamlined operations.
“You’d be surprised at how much metal fatigue occurs if you run standard channel iron or angle iron built trailers at the maximum allowable load,” says Philip McCullough, a former farmer who is

Preventing Metal Fatigue (continued) Cullough. The torsion tube on these trailers is made of 4-1/2” OD pipe that runs down center of the trailer frame and is tied to the main beam at three points. A second flatbed trailer feature to look for is rectangular steel tubing used in the frame, bumper, and tail lights. The four-sided structural shape of rectangular steel tubing can add strength without much weight, maximizing payload capacity. Yet some trailer manufacturers use channel iron – or worse, angle iron – for side rails, crossmembers, and rear bumpers. “Rectangular steel tubing like this tends to disperse stress more evenly with its four sides than channel iron, where the trailer flex is concentrated on a two-sided weld, if the manufacturer welds it at all,” says McCullough. “Unlike angle iron which tends to rust and accumulate debris, rectangular tubing is stronger and stays cleaner.”

on rough ground without damage.” To reduce stress when loading and unloading, a reinforced ramp is also important. This can transfer loading weight to the ground and keep additional flexing off of the main beam and structure. Some ramps come standard with adjustable, spring assisted, load equalizers, which can relieve stress on the trailer’s main beam and enable the loading of standalone trailers, unhitched to a truck. This can streamline loading and unloading operations tremendously. Without load equalizers, unequal equipment loading can stress the trailer’s main beams and even lift the rear end of the truck

weight pivoting on the axles, adding unnecessary stress and metal fatigue.” “Since we have multiple drivers and trailers, I sometimes need to load a trailer before I have a driver,” adds McCullough. “With the reinforced ramp and load equalizers, I can leave a trailer loaded for the driver, which streamlines operations. When he gets in, he just backs up, unhooks the old trailer, hooks up the new trailer, and leaves. I don’t pay overtime for staff waiting for the driver to arrive, or to share a forklift. By pre-loading the trailers, we can save from an hour to half a day in staffing cost.” A8

Fears, Panic Can Be Difficult For Farm People “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself,” President Franklin Delano Roosevelt reassured Americans in his first inaugural address following onset of the Great Depression. This maxim is one of the best for us to remember when we cope with unreasonable fears or anxiety. Scientific evidence is accumulating about the causes and management of panic disorder, and other unnecessary but handicapping fears and anxieties that can overwhelm us at times. This and next week’s Farm and Ranch Life columns explain how anxiety disorders develop and how we can manage anxiety episodes. For behavioral health purposes, anxiety can be defined as worry, fear, nervousness or unease about something with an uncertain outcome. Phobias and panic can become so pervasive that they merge into generalized anxiety disorder. Posttraumatic stress disorder, which affects many active and former military personnel--and sometimes distressed farmers, is also a common anxiety disorder.
The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), which oversees most of these data collection efforts, groups farming, ranching, fishing and forestry together as agricultural occupations. Crop farmers often work without adequate sleep and hurry to undertake field work, especially during planting and harvest seasons because the outcome of their efforts—crop yields– depends much on timely completion of these key activities. Producers have little control over weather, consumer demand and competitors in a global market. Livestock and dairy farmers experience dual sources of stress: working closely with animals that may behave unpredictably and are subject to a variety of diseases and uncontrolled living conditions, as well as the production of feed for their animals. Elise Bostad recently surveyed 396 beef producers in Sweden, the results of which were summarized in the January 2013 issue of the Journal of Agricultural Safety and Health; 42% of the respondents reported significant stress and high levels of potential hazards.
Farm people are more likely to experience anxiety than people in many other walks of life, but severe anxiety can affect any of us. Why are people engaged in agriculture more prone to anxiety? Two main factors contribute to farmers’ anxiety: the high stress of farming with little control over many of the conditions that affect success or failure, and genetically programmed inclinations. Farming is stressful and uncertain. Annual surveys of occupation-related injuries, illnesses and fatalities of June 2013
workers in agriculture regularly indicate agricultural occupations are among the most stressful and hazardous.
When unexpected events occur that influence the outcome of farming, producers become stressed. Currently, uncertainty about continuation of the drought in much of the Midwest and High Plains and the possibility that crop and livestock prices could unexpectedly tumble are major stressors, especially to farmers who are heavily leveraged with debt.
www.farmandlivestockdirectory.com |
Our genes play a role in the way we react to stress. A study published in the August 2008 issue of Behavioral Neuroscience by Dr. Christian Montag and his colleagues in the Giessen Gene Brain Behavior Project at the University of Bonn, Germany confirmed the long-held suspicion that a specific gene (COMT variation Met158) is linked with the development of alarm in response to being startled. People with this gene are more prone than those without the gene to react to stress with a flood of neurotransmitter chemicals, released by our bodies, which gear us up to deal with a perceived threat. Perhaps this is the same gene that has been referred as the Teutonic gene that inclines farmers of Germanic origin (any persons who can trace their heritage to the Teutons who inhabited Germany and later spread to Scandinavia, the British Isles, other parts of Europe and eventually to North America through migration) to overwork when threatened and eventually to become depressed. Probably, this gene has become concentrated in successful farmers around the world, because less successful farmers have been selected out. The predominant ancestry of people who farm in North America traces to people carrying the Teutonic gene, or a similar genetic inclination. People with this gene, whether Teutonic or not, tend to work harder when threats to their livelihood occur, such as the possibility of frost harming a crop, disease affecting livestock, or falling short on a full payment of a loan.
Midwest Farm and Livestock Directory |
Initially they are likely to become anxious, but depression sets in when the beneficial bodily chemicals, serotonin, norepinepherine and certain catecholamines, become depleted. Much more research is still needed, however, to fully understand the role genes play in the development of anxiety disorders and their treatment. The more we know about what causes us to behave as we do, the better. I hope this explanation has not been too complex, but I also know readers of this column are particularly bright and seek out useful information. Knowing what inclines farm people to become anxious also suggests ways we can manage anxiety. Next week I will elaborate on how we can manage anxiety. Stay cool!
Dr. Michael R. Rosmann brings the perspective of a farmer in “Farm And Ranch Life”. Dr. Rosmann grew up on a mixed grain and livestock farm in Western Iowa where he experienced enjoyable hard work and 4-H, and witnessed the stresses that accompany farming and farm life. Dr. Rosmann developed the first mental health response in Iowa to the Farm Crisis of the 1980s. In 2001, Dr. Rosmann, along with partners in seven states, founded the nonprofit network, AgriWellness Inc. AgriWellness conducted research and provided counseling services to farm people. It became clearer that a specialized field – agricultural behavioral health – was needed to respond to the unique problems experienced by farmers, ranchers and others involved in agriculture.

riving through any city or town in the country, you notice acres and acres of land devoted to lawns. In fact, lawns occupy more land than any single crop grown by our nation’s farmers. In some areas of the country, up to 60% of the municipal water is used for lawn watering! While a nice yard is pretty to look at, my thoughts are: Why not raise food on at least part of that land? But, I’ve been told that in some areas there are Homeowners Associations that frown on gardens in yards because they look tacky! OK, well maybe there is a way around that little problem by growing your salad in the flower bed. This idea is for those of you who like fresh lettuce, a tomato or two, and a few cucumbers and radishes for munching, but don’t have the time or enjoy laboring for hours over a big garden.
Another Tool in the
FINE ART of MONEY MANAGEMENT
Cheap Grout Cleaner, Carpet Cleaners, Spot Removers, Tick Remover and More! Pennywise shares carpet cleaners and spot removers sent in by readers:
Carpet Cleaner #1: 1/3 cup powdered Borax (20 Mule Team is one brand) 1/4 cup rubbing alcohol 4 gallons of water Mix, place in carpet cleaning machine and clean the carpets. Rinse well with ¼ cup of white vinegar mixed with 4 gallons of water. This removes any residue from the cleaner and the carpet will stay clean longer.
Carpet Cleaner #2: You simply plant a few radish seeds in among the petunias. The garden produce will be eaten long before the plants spread to cover the bed completely anyway. A tomato plant or two at the back of the marigold or zinnia patch will give you all the tomatoes you want to eat fresh and some to share with friends and coworkers, or even to freeze if that’s your choice. A cucumber vine twined in among the morning glories on the trellis won’t be really noticeable and the cucumbers fresh from the vine are wonderful (my kids ate them peel and all right in the garden). Pepper plants are beautiful to grow and since they now have peppers in many colors besides the green ones; they are great to have for snacks and in salads. Lettuce plants can grow among the flowers adding a touch of green color and can be harvested as they reach ‘eating size’. They taste so much better than the store variety that has been in storage for a couple of weeks or longer. Most of the ‘older generation’ that taught me about gardening always had a row or two of flowers in their gardens ‘just for pretty’, and the flowers attracted the bees that pollinate the garden plants. When you are thinking about landscaping your yard and adding trees, why not plant apple, peach or pear trees? Depending on your part of the country and climate, you may even be able to grow nut trees as well. We get to -30° here at times and the only ‘food trees’ I’ve been able to grow are apple trees. If you need to plant some kind of a hedge between you and the neighbors, consider fruit bushes. Garden catalogs are packed with all sorts of berry bushes from blueberries to Nanking cherries and many other types. (I did get one of the cherry bushes to grow and we have enjoyed the fruit for many years, and, the birds like them as well. Salad in a flower bed: Just a thought from this old country gal! Till next time... A12

1/8 cup of Whisk laundry liquid detergent in the amount of water called for by the particular machine you own. Follow the cleaning with the vinegar rinse above and let dry.
Upholstery Cleaner Use the cheapest shaving cream you can find to use as a foam carpet or upholstery cleaner. Spread the foam over the surface with your hand and follow with a scrubby sponge. Rinse in the vinegar solution and let dry.
Carpet Spot Remover 1 Tablespoon household ammonia 1 Tablespoon liquid dish soap 1 quart of hot water Apply to the carpet with a sponge, scrub with a small fine brush and then blot with another sponge or a dry rag. ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
Votive Candle Holders A lot of us burn candles in our homes, and I sometimes like to shield the candle flames. The ceiling fan light covers work perfectly for this and they are heavy enough so they won’t tip over. –submitted by SK, MN ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

out the sections leaving the little white center core in place. (It took a couple of tries for me before I managed NOT to break the core off.) You now have a small orange ‘bowl’. Take some salad oil and pour it in the orange shell, leaving part of the white core exposed and then light the core. It took a couple of tries before I could get the core to light, but it finally did and made a nice little candle for the table. I set mine in a little dish just in case the table got bumped – didn’t want to risk an oil fire! The candle burned for several hours before going out by itself when the salad oil ran out. ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
Glass Glue A reader sent this to us; I haven’t tried it yet, but it’s inexpensive to say the least: Mix 2 Tablespoons plain gelatin, 2 Tablespoons cold water, 3 Tablespoons skim milk and a few drops of oil of cloves. Heat on the stove until hot and use to glue glass to glass. – submitted by Alexa L (Pennywise says: I am assuming this glue is meant to use for some kind of craft where one would glue the flat glass marbles or other bits of colored glass to a cylinder, such as a clear glass vase.) ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
Ticks Away It’s almost tick season here, and already may be where you live. All you need to do if you find a tick fastened on a child, dog, cat, or even you or your spouse is to soak a cotton ball in some liquid soap. Put the soap filled cotton ball over the tick and let it set for 20 – 30 seconds. The tick will let loose and you can find it in the cotton ball and dispose of it. This is a great idea because I’ve seen where kids have pulled the ticks off, but the head remains under the skin. These can get really sore until you get the head out, and could even become infected enough to require medical attention. – submitted by RS, ND
A reader writes: “ If you put your lipstick in the refrigerator it will last longer and go on a lot easier.”

Sports Special To deal with grass stains and ground in dirt on baseball, soccer and even football uniforms: Mix equal parts of white vinegar and your favorite liquid laundry detergent. Rub into the stains really well and let the garment(s) sit for at least 20 to 30 minutes before laundering. I’ve used this on football and baseball uniforms with great success.

Canning Jars? Instead of buying new canning jars for about $1 each, why not ask your neighbors if they have any jars they no longer use, or check out the yard and thrift sales going on throughout the summer months. I’ve obtained several boxes of canning jars for just 25 cents PER BOX at yard sales, and some neighbors have just given me their ‘no longer used’ canning jars. The neighbors were glad to see someone else learning how to save on their food bills and keep the art of home canning alive. Your local extension office has all kinds of information about canning and the latest on the proper timing.

Clean Produce To make sure there are no ‘bugs’ in that nice head of broccoli or cauliflower you just cut in the garden, fill a pan with cold water and then put in a few drops of vinegar. Put the broccoli or cauliflower in enough water to cover and just wait a couple of minutes. Any little ‘buggy friends’ will paddle for the surface like mad and you can dispose of said critters before making your salad! – submitted by OF, NE –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– As always, if you have tips or ideas to share, send them to me at PennyWise, Box 518, Kadoka, SD 57543 or email me at pennywise@gwtc.net. Q&A How To Choose the Best Feeders for Your Operation
In this edition of In the Barn with Hedgewood, we’ll cover the benefits of using wet/dry feeders for grow-finish and nursery pigs, answer questions about what to consider when replacing your feeders and give you the “411” on 304 stainless – how to know if you’re getting the best quality stainless. If you have a question you’d like Hedgewood to take a swing at, please drop us a line and we’ll do our best to sort it out.

livestock producers – for many years and we recently began to notice something interesting: Farmers like to ask a lot of questions. They want to know about which things are best for their operation, what’s new out there, how different brands compare, how they can save money on input costs, and so on. And they appreciate

A. Providing pigs moistened feed versus dry feed has been shown to improve daily gain and feed intake – which means pigs grow faster – while lowering the amount of feed per pound of gain and the amount of water used or wasted. On average, pigs on wet/dry feed will reach market weight up to a week earlier than those on dry feed. Beyond improved pig performance, reduced water usage means less energy to pump water into the barn and less volume in the pit. As producers are challenged to improve pig performance in the face of high input costs, features like wet/dry feeding can make a difference in profitability. In fact, we haven’t sold a single dry feeder in the past six months. Once producers know the benefits, they want to take advantage of them. –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

A. With more wet/dry feeders in use, there’s a greater amount of data and confidence in their performance. There have also been improvements in controlling the amount of water going into the feeder for a more consistent ration simply by regulating the water pressure. If wet/dry feeding is good for the grow-finish stage, does it also work for nursery pigs?
A. Yes, it is proving to work very well for wean pigs. The research shows that starting pigs out on wet/dry feeders can improve initial feed intake compared to dry feed and keep feed consumption up as the pigs move to the grow-finish stage. A new water space feeder is the latest innovation in wet/dry feeding, giving wean pigs access to clean water as they transition to wet/dry feed. Research shows an improvement in the growth of young pigs over dry feed and even traditional wet/dry feed. www.farmandlivestockdirectory.com |
Q
There are several wet/dry feeders brands on the market. Which is the best?
A. Choosing which feeder is best for your operation really depends on what’s important to you and what you want to spend. If you’re just looking for the benefits of wet/dry feed and the longevity of the feeder itself is less, there are some models available at a lower price point. But if you intend to be feeding pigs for a long time, it would be best to choose a sturdier, more highly engineered feeder that will last longer, but will cost more upfront. Also, look for feeders that come with a manufacturer’s warranty that will back you up should you encounter a problem with the equipment. –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
Q
Are all wet/dry feeders made of stainless steel?
A. Constant exposure to moisture and feed can eventually cause corrosion, so most wet/dry feeders are constructed from stainless steel. Keep in mind, though, that not all stainless steel is created equal. We recommend feeders made of 304 stainless, which will give you the longest life and best performance. How can you tell the difference? Try the magnet test: A magnet will stick to lower quality stainless steel but will not stick to 304 stainless. –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

Clutter Clearing Choices: Clear Clutter, Organize Your Home, & Reclaim Your Life is a seasonally organized book of clutter clearing tips that readers can pick and choose from to fit their personal style and needs.

Try Common Sense Clutter Clearing There are too many places in my home (and sheds, and basement, and car, and garage…) to store too much stuff. I have this nagging feeling that if I could get rid of half of my stuff, or more, my life would be simpler. I even suspect I wouldn’t miss anything. I dare to think I would have more time and energy if I didn’t need to spend so much time cleaning, tidying, sorting, and weeding out household stuff. The problem is that when I look at the stuff I have tucked away, it all seems like “good stuff.” Much of it is useful and in good condition. So what’s the issue? Sheer quantity! Contemplate your clutter while I discuss mine and follow the common sense approach to clutter clearing explained below. Why can’t I get rid of my clutter? Simple. I have a poor memory. Yes, poor memory creates clutter. When I’m weeding out the basement closet, I forget what I have in the hallway and bedroom closets. It doesn’t all fit in my head at once. This makes for incomplete clutter control. There is a simple solution—a common sense clutter control rule to help: Group like things together. It sounds like a science experiment, but it is actually an organizing rule that helps ™ get rid of household clutter and keeps it from coming back. Although I had read it before in clutter control and organizing books, I couldn’t see why it mattered or how it applied to me. Finally, one day, I got it. I was looking for a picture frame. I had a cute kid photo I wanted to display. I checked the kitchen drawer and looked
™
at the frames there. Next, I went to my bedroom and pulled out other photo frames tucked away in a dresser. After that, I went downstairs and looked through the desk, and finally, I dug through some frames I had tucked away in the laundry room. Are you fed up yet? I was.
At our house, we gather together things like videos, CD’s, stuffed animals, and mittens. Group like things together in each clutter category to make lasting decisions about what to donate, what to save, and what storage containers will keep us better organized.
I was running around my house like a hamster in a cage checking out various food stashes. Oh… “Group like things together.” I finally got it. I gathered all my picture frames together. I tossed the broken ones. I donated the ones that I didn’t like or were funny sizes or that didn’t match my decorating ideas. At last, I was left with a small stack of frames that I put in a box on a shelf in the laundry room.
Store like items together. This is an important corollary to the first rule. Once you have gathered up like items, try to designate one place to store them together. No one really wants to spend time hunting all around the house looking in several places for one kind of thing.
The trick is to apply this rule to all clutter categories of life. I can’t weed out clothing until I’m caught up with the laundry and have all the clothing together. I can’t effectively weed out shoes until I’m looking at every pair I own. That means I have to grab the pairs in the bedroom, the ones in the entry closet, and the ones downstairs and put them all together. * What about my husband’s sports jackets and baseball caps? We have to grab the ones in the bedroom closet, the ones® in the spare closet, the ones on his workbench, and the ones out in his truck to get an accurate count of what he really has. What about my children’s books, games, or toys? If some of their stuff is in their bedrooms and some of it is tucked in the toy room, family room, basement, or garage, then * they will have the same problem with weeding out.

I don’t want to purchase extra stuff just because I can’t find the one I already own. Most importantly, I don’t want to waste time weeding out clutter over and over again because I can only make partial decisions. I can’t keep a complete inventory in my head as I move from closet to closet and room to room. Finally, think like a PRO—a professional organizer! That is, to Pile like items together, Reduce the quantity, and then Organize the remainder. Try the simple rules and acronym to weed out household clutter once—and for all.

When someone looks for something at your house, do you ever find yourself telling them, “Well, check here, or, if it’s not here, try over there, or maybe it will be in such and such a spot, and have you looked in the (fill in the blank) yet?” When possible, any single category of stuff would be easier to find and manage if it has only one storage spot in the home.

My Favorite Bible Verses I would like to share some of my favorite bible verses with you for this month’s column. They are so uplifting and encouraging; they just might be among your ‘favorites’ as well! Read on, and enjoy God’s promises to us! Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. –Philippians 4:6,7 Let the Word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. –Colossians 3:1 And how from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness. –2 Timothy 3:15,16 So that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. –2 Timothy 3:17 Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in him. He will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does no fear when the heat comes: its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit. –Jeremiah 17:7,8 For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord. As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, so is my word that goes out from my mouth; it will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it. –Isaiah 55:8-11
June 2013
But seek ye first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. –Matthew 6:33
Raising Livestock and Farm Kids – An Excellent Mix
Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see. –Hebrews 11:1 The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the Word of God stands forever. – Isaiah 40:8 I know that my Redeemer lives, and that in the end he will stand upon the earth. And after my skin has been destroyed, yet in my flesh I will see God; I myself will see him with my own eyes; I, and not another. How my heart yearns within me. –Job19:25-27 Come unto me all ye that are weak and heavy burdened, and I will give you rest. –Matthew 11:28 And finally one of the most reassuring sets of verses in the whole Bible, Psalm 23: The Lord is my Shepherd; I shall not be in want. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, and he restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil, my cup overflows. Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. If that set of verses doesn’t reassure you of eternal life, I John 5:13 will: I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life. Enjoy and save God’s comforting Word and Promises! Steve Huneke

ast month we had an unhappy day on our farm. Five minutes after a placing an advertisement to sell my small flock of turkeys, the telephone began ringing. The first caller purchased them all.
the years, depending on our children’s requests.
We have had turkeys for many years, they just seemed to belong here. Throughout the day, we would hear their singsong voices as they went about their business eating bugs and insects on the ground and in the trees. That natural foraging instincts brought about their downfall.
Raising livestock creates a natural environment for families. Working together to build barns and fences, doing chores; just dad, mom and the kiddos, what can be better than that!
They were not smart enough to stay out of the gardens. A haven for insects. Alas, our garden is not just for us, we are truck gardeners, selling produce at the local farmer’s market in town, three days a week. We have to be ultra careful in producing the food as does any farmer. Poultry free-ranging are not a good mix in the fresh produce business. Someday I hope to purchase baby poults again, when our garden is just our own again. In the meantime, I do encourage you to look into the hobby of raising poultry. It is a past time that works for most any farm family. Livestock and children are a perfect fit. They teach so much of life, responsibility in a real sense of the word, that animal is dependent on you for for feed and water, protection for predator and weather elements and just the perfect listener who reveals no secrets. A good place to start is to look at the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy. They have listed older breeds of poultry and livestock that are rare, critical and on watch lists. From there one can choose a species that is endangered. The fun begins as we have studied the different breeds listed. Taking into account their history and what makes the breed unique, has led us onto the quest for finding the right birds. Poultry was easy as there are several hatcheries that send us catalogs. We have had other animal species through

For many of the animals and poultry there are associations that list members who have the animals with the purest genetics.
Learning where to purchase feeds, what rations are needed at what stage of the livestock life. All of this can be a young person’s research that he can put to good use. He learns by doing—the best teacher. Not everything goes well, we have had eggs that didn’t hatch well in incubators, baby lambs, goat kids and calves would not always be born alive. We have had losses to predators, road kill or due to the natural cycle of life. Life’s lessons. Sadly, making money seldom occurs, but this hobby has its own special reward; food on the table. Our biased taste buds scores the unsurpassed flavor excellent. We knew the work that went into growing the meat. We have learned to butcher chickens. The geese and turkeys we did take elsewhere. There was a bit of debate on the turkeys, but B&B Poultry in Hospers is just too close and handy. The geese were done at Martzahns in Greene. Both places are in Iowa, I am sure there are other good facilities elsewhere in our rural areas. Raising animals for meat just seems to me to be a worthwhile avocation for any family. It does build memories, is a learning process for all, and is something everyone can be involved in, young and old. It is time well spent. Since Saturday we have been hearing baby chicks peeping under the heat lamps, just one of the springtime pleasures of life on the farm. ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– Renae B. “PROFITS GROW WITH KNIGHTRO”
Ken E. Knight
The County Fair ‘Trifecta’ There are three counties that lay adjacent to the Canadian border in northwestern North Dakota that share common boundaries. They are the counties of Divide, Burke, and Bottineau. Coincidentally, all three county fairs are scheduled for the same dates this year: June 14, 15, and 16. They share more than just the commonality of location and fair dates; they represent a unique part of the country—where it is more about people, tradition, and a way of life. Unlike the more heavily populated urban areas of the country, this is a sparsely populated niche that truly depends upon one another for sustainability. To love and honor your neighbor is more than a cliché! The county fair became a time to celebrate this union of families and neighborhoods, and showcase the wares of their toil. From that of the fastest horse to the finest linens, it was where bragging rights were earned. You could no longer insinuate that you grew the biggest pumpkin; it had to pass the scrutiny of the keenest eye of a professional judge. Those stories of winning and losing have become folklore for generations to come. The tales become faster and bigger over the years, but the sentiment and nostalgia will linger forever. With each passing year, however, the evolution of an ever-changing world has taken its toll on the fairs. Unlike some parts of the country where the county fair continues to grow and flourish, there has been a declining population and a migration toward the bright lights of the more magnificent metropolitan areas. Today, the county fairs in northwestern North Dakota are little more than 4-H achievement days, where the focus is totally on 4-H projects. Thanks to county extension agents and dedicated 4-H leaders, 4-H is still alive and well, but the county fair as we remember it is gone. Gone are the days of the midway-filled carnivals that ran from one end of the fairgrounds to the other, the hustle and bustle of vendors and exhibit booths, and a grandstand act being rehearsed. The sights, sounds, tastes and scents of these county fairs are unmistakably gone. No longer are there the blaring sounds of a pa- system, the aroma of a pronto-pup, or the flashing lights of a Ferris wheel. There was something magical
about walking onto those fairgrounds; like being transfigured into a land of fantasy.
– Burke-Divide-Bottineau. These three fairs in particular have perhaps suffered the most from attrition, competing metropolis, and the lifeblood of those who once dedicated their lives to this cause. Having personally experienced life in several different sectors of the country, I can attest to the fact that there is no place on the face of the earth where the lifeblood and character of the community is so deeply rooted. The dirt may not be as black or the summers as long as in other parts of the country, but just as the God-given natural resources run deep – deep is the connection of man in this part of the country. The county fair in the only real lifeline left in Burke-Divide-Bottineau counties. So let us not pass up the opportunity to pay homage to our ancestors and give renewed hope to those who have never experienced what you
For one three day moment the county fair became our escape from reality. It highlighted a long awakened summer, and gave meaning and purpose to our lives. Budding romances and relationships reinvigorated—and who knows what went on behind the barns. This begs the question—do we want to give up on something that was once so special in our lives‘? North Dakota has been reinvigorated with natural resources (wind-oil-coal-potash) bigger and more productive than any other place on the face on the earth. But what does it have to show for it, other than newfound wealth, a battered-up countryside, and a bunch of freestanding reminders of what could/should have been. So why not channel some of this newfound wealth and energy back into the heart and soul of your communities. The county fair would be a good place to start, as the blueprint of success still exists. The county fair may be but a twinkle in the ol‘ man’s eye, but there are still a lot of old men that would like to go out fighting for a legacy that would give meaning to a lifetime of county fairs. You owe it to your kids, grand kids, and for generations to come! As our heritage continues to get trampled down like nothing more than landfill – schools being bulldozed to the ground, towns dying, and our showcase of pride and joy (fairgrounds) growing up to weeds – could there be a greater cause than that of rejuvenating the county fair? I challenge each and every one of you to do what you can to breathe new life into your county fair
and I take for granted. For those of us who actually lived at the fairgrounds – preparing for the fair and cleaning up afterwards – it was a rite of passage to make such a major contribution to the community. The rewards were many – from grand champion steers to winning horse races, but it was the intangible exhilarating experiences that have impacted my life forever. This column is dedicated to the county extension agents of Burke-Dan Folske, Divide-Keith Brown, and Bottineau-James Kapp who have worked tirelessly to sustain their respective fairs. Their dedication to 4-H is especially recognized, for it seems to be the only saving grace for the status of their current fairs. Let’s get behind these county agents in support of their efforts to bring these fairs back to what they once were.
PONY TALES By Ponty
The 4-H Market Steer Auction The Burke County Fair conjures up all kinds of memories, but the one for which I’m most proud is that of my first auction. I was just eleven years old, when our county extension agent asked if I wanted to sell the 4-H baby beef steers. He knew that I was tagging around behind my dad at livestock auctions, and would spend hours behind the barn emulating that guy up in the auction block. This continued until I left home, but the following newspaper article is the result of a return trip from college:
4-H Calf Sale Held at Fair Eight choice 4-H calves were sold for top money at the 4-H fat calf auction conducted by the fair management the last day of the Burke County Fair. Colonel Kenneth Knight, Flaxton, auctioneer of the calf sale donated his services to squeeze top money for each calf through the auction ring. Ivan Goheen, bidding for Minot Federal Savings and Loan, purchased the grand champion steer of the sale from Ronnie Nelson and Flaxton. The Reserve Grand Champion steer consigned by Gary Rawn of Flaxton went to Pete Schultz, proprietor of the Flaxton Super Value. The third steer went through
the auction, consigned by Elton Christianson, Bowbells, also went to Pete Schultz. The Burke County Fair Association paid $29.00 per cwt. for the steer consigned by Olaf Christianson, Bowbells. North Hill Bowl, Minot, bought the choice beef consigned by Russell Christianson, Bowbells. The Faxton Coop paid $27.75 per cwt. for Dwight Jacobsons choice 4-H calf. Lund Goheen, Minot, picked up Larry Swenson’s calf for $28.75 per cwt., and the calf consigned by Richard Wilkes, Bowbells, sold for the top money of $29.30 to Ivan Goheen of Minot. The Minot bidding gave the local bidders stiff competition for each calf through the ring, which created a brisk auction. This was the first attempt at selling 4-H calves at the Burke County Fair and the Fair Management plans a similar event for the fair next year. Over the years I’ve dedicated many articles about the fair with story lines and names that many of you can acclaim and associate. Among those names are those mentioned in this newspaper article. These articles are available upon request.

product spotlight» Flexxifinger™ is the choice of mechanized farmers worldwide On a hot, harvest day in 1998, Dave Dietrich discovered that long, rigid, metal lifters did not work in short, brittle, pulse crops. More lentils were going on the ground than into his combine. He needed to get those lifters off his header and was frustrated with the length of time it took to remove them since they were bolted on from underneath the header. He was losing valuable harvest time. The Pulse Crop Lifter
MidCut™ lifter and the HighCut™ lifter. We have a lifting pan that can be attached to the Pulse Crop Lifter to help reduce shatter loss. This year will see a limited number of FlexxiFloat™ lifters available. The FlexxiFloat™ is a series of lifters that work well where the ground is rough and rolling. All of our lifters, including those still under development, attach to the header using our patented QD™ technology. As the farmer moves from one crop to another through varying ground conditions, the QD™ attaching system makes it very convenient for the farmer to quickly change lifters to have the best “tool” for the job. We are proud to say that our lifters are used in Canada, the United States, Australia, New Zealand, Africa and several countries in Europe. Our mission is to develop a reliable line of harvest products that are “The Choice of Mechanized Farmers Worldwide™”.

Irrigation engines can be more affordable with a fuel mixer What he needed was a lifter that: • Uses a system of attaching and removing the lifter that is quick and easy (reducing down time) • Is short, to reduce the travel time of the crop moving from ground to header • Uses a nylon “finger” that is gentle on the crop while it lifts the crop and guides it over the knife and into the header • Is gentle on the combine - the nylon finger will break before the metal lifter breaks causing virtually no damage to the combine • Has a forward-lifting point that is infinitely adjustable so that all the lifters work in unison
Realize saving of up to $3.00 per hour, per engine using a Dual Fuel Mixer
and the other engine, a 4-cylinder non-turbo. The third engine was a John Deere 4T100. During the testing, straight diesel was used, followed by a diesel and natural gas mix. The dual fuel outperformed the diesel on all three engines. The Case 4-cylinder had a savings of $1.06 per hour; the John Deere saved $2.40 per hour, and the Case turbo saved a whopping $3.55 per hour. From a fuel savings standpoint, mixing propane and diesel might have been yet an even cheaper mix–but propane proved to be more cost prohibitive, and made the engines run hotter. Hardy says the mixture of natural gas and diesel is “the way to go”, and his mixer is designed to reduce the high costs of running irrigation engines. In the past few years, several producers using the mixer have reported their fuel cost savings has been very substantial. Hardy said producers have told him they have savings of over $3.00 per hour by using the mixer over straight diesel, and have had gains of 100-150 rpm from their engines. Another benefit they have reported is oil change intervals could be longer with the fuel mix versus the straight diesel. The Hardy Duel Fuel Mixer comes in a kit, and the cost is $1,595. Just ten years ago, diesel fuel was the fuel of choice for irrigation engines. At that time, is was much cheaper than natural gas. Producers started purchasing diesel engines and abandoning natural gas.
3-point implement caddies from Elk Creek Welding & Steel Products
Today, things are different. Diesel fuel has tripled in price since 2000. Producers had to do something to make operating irrigation engines more affordable. They started mixing natural gas with diesel, and discovered they saved $80100 on average per day, per engine.
The new Model 500 from Elk Creek Welding & Steel Products is designed for mounting tank or hopper on frame. (Frame does not raise and lower - only the rear hitch.)
• Front hitch: forged steel pintle style with safety chain and jack • Hydraulic depth control valve Elk Creek Welding & Steel Products, Inc. also has bale and portable feeders, panels and fence, feed bins, chutes, tubs, alleys, portable buildings and tree shears. Eliminate the dangerous and dirty manual clean out of headers Goodwin Industries has a corn header sweep for you Pictured on the right is a header sweep built and manufactured by Goodwin Industries Inc. of Burns, KS. The header sweep is designed to sweep in down corn, broken stalks, and dry leaf buildup. This in turn eliminates dangerous and dirty manual clean out of the header. This is done with drag arms connected to a crank shaft, which continuously pulls the stalks into the auger. With this design, the drag arms pull back, pickup, and move forward, set down and pull back again. This unit can be left on and in use at all times. It is not big and bulky and will not hinder good standing corn. You just put it on and let it run. The header sweep is powered by a hydraulic motor connected to the reel drive which allows for variable speed adjustment. Each drag arm is connected to a spring bar, which allows for tension release when necessary. Also, by using a “V” belt drive slippage is possible when needed. The design allows for easy installation on most headers. Contact Goodwin Industries, Inc., 215 West Broadway, Burns, KS 66840, phone: 620-7265281, or www.goodwinsweep.com.
The above criteria produced the Pulse Crop Lifter which is: • Gentle on the crop • Safe and gentle to the combine • Infinitely adjustable • Quick and easy to attach and remove from the header. The success of the Pulse Crop Lifter in recovering lentils, peas and edible beans convinced farmers and Dietrich that this technology would be equally effective in salvaging cereal crops that had been flattened by heavy rain, strong winds, hail or insect damage and heavy crops like canola which needed a lifter with additional strength to hold the crop above the cutting knife. The HD (heavy duty) Crop Lifter has proven its worth over the last three years. Flexxifinger QD Industries Inc. now produces the Pulse Crop Lifter, the HD Lifter, the

Don Hardy, owner of Don Hardy Fuel Efficient Engine Services in Floydada, Texas, developed a dual fuel mixer for diesel engines to combine natural gas and diesel. The fuel mixing process could then be done economically, by all producers. In the spring of 2007, Hardy and Leon New, an engineer with the Texas Cooperative Extension Service in Amarillo, tested this mixer on three engines in Floyd County. Two engines were Case IH engines–one waas a turbo-charged,

JBM Manufacturing hits the ag market with built-to-last equipment JBM Manufacturing is an Ontario based manufacturer of heavy-duty farm equipment, including a complete line of bale feeders, bale wagons and dump trailers – each one built with a passion for farmer-friendly products for over 20 years.
2. American Eagle: Bellow most volume of air; 3 to 6 cfm with a 10 – 15 mph wind–even more at 15 – 27 mph wind. The competition: Diaphragms 1 to 3 cfm–maximum. 3. American Eagle: High volume is more important than high pressure. American Eagle puts out only 8 to 9 psi but can supply up to six diffusers. The competition: Diaphragm more pressure, but can only supply a maximum of two diffusers.
“I used to be a farmer myself – now we’re manufacturing good, quality products for farmers,” says Martin. It seems their hard work has paid off. John BM Manufacturing now has a dealer presence across North America.
Additionally, many items can be customized to customer specifications, and JBM offers farmers a range of options and tire choices to suit their specific application. Business has not been without its share of difficult times. A shop fire gutted the manufacturing facility late in 2012, shutting down production until the facility was re-built. However, the expanded manufacturing space in the new facility means more efficient production of equipment.
4. American Eagle: 8 to 9 psi will supply one diffuser 14 to 16 feet. The competition: Diaphragms will pump deeper but with very little volume of air. The deeper you pump, the less volume.

Starwood Rafters, the manufacturers of LamPly trusses, is a company devoted to building high-quality trusses for large buildings. They offer many types of trusses to meet any need, including: • Pole sheds • Free stalls • Pavilion shelters • Machinery storage • Riding arenas • Solar barns The Lam-Ply Truss can span up to 72 feet and is used in many applications, from machinery storage to livestock facilities to horse arenas. It also has been developed with a gambrel-style and a mono-slope design.
Starwood Rafters: About the company Founded in 1964 as a manufacturer of laminated arch rafters and beams, the company started out in Independence, Wisconsin as a three-man operation, with the original owners, Joseph Wozney and his two partners working nights after working their regular jobs. In the early 1970’s, they developed the LamPly Truss. It combines plywood, glulams, and dimensional lumber to make a truss that is stronger than a conventional web truss. This allows the builder to space them further apart to reduce erection time and labor costs. This design also limits bird nesting and improves ventilation in livestock facilities. Today, Corey Wozney and Steve Wozney, Joseph’s sons, operate the company. Starwood Rafters is still in Independence, Wisconsin and now ships its products anywhere in the U.S.

Any new part will be shipped at the customer’s expense for parts, plus shipping both ways. (This can take months. We know a Diaphragm customer still waiting over a year.)

5. American Eagle: Bellow warranty, five years. The competition: Diaphragm warranty– ZERO!
7. American Eagle: Pump action is a huge 1 and 3/4” stroke some call intermittent. Most pumps are. The Eagles huge volume of air creates the most effective method of water circulation. More air, more circulation. The competition: Only 1/2” stroke, also intermittent. Less volume of air results in much less water circulation.
Back in business, JBM is continuing what it does best – producing products that farmers across North American can both afford and trust.

Why American Eagle beats the competition, Reasons 1-7 (Out of 21) 1. American Eagle: the bellow is by Firestone, which can last 15 to 20 years under a heavy duty 2,000# truck. The competition: Diaphragms need replacement as early as two years.
Being a farmer turned manufacturer himself, owner Joe Martin realizes by first-hand experience the attention to detail that is essential for “farmer friendly” products.
JBM’s complete line-up of products includes feeder wagons, skid feeders, bunk feeders, bale wagons and thrower racks. The popular Grain & Forage Boss Dumpers, Dirt Boss Dumpers, and Mighty Dumpers make the ultimate dump trailer lineup for handling everything from grain to dirt and rocks.

product spotlight» ProAG introduces two new heavy-duty bale carriers
Unique heart formula saves countless lives
ProAG, a brand of Morris Industries is launching two new super-efficient bale carriers: The ProAG 16K PLUS Bale Runner for large square bales and the ProAG 900 Hay Hiker for round bales.
New 900 Hay Hiker
The 16K PLUS Bale Runner and the 900 Hay Hiker are ProAG’s response to the increased bale densities and heavier weights now commonly produced by newer balers. Loading and unloading these large, heavy bales in volume can now be handled faster and more efficiently.
to stop. This carrier is very gentle on the bale and chains never come in contact with the bale twine or net wrap.
“Suppliers and transporters of biomass to ethanol plants are finding they need to move an increased volume of agricultural feedstocks such as corn, wheat, switchgrass, and corn stover, quickly and efficiently,” says ProAG’s Lisa Gaskin. “Any producer loading and unloading large quantities will appreciate the efficiency and reliability of these new machines. The 16K PLUS Bale Runner carries twice the load of smaller units which increases the operators speed and capacity in moving more bales in less time resulting in more dollars faster.”
“Simple, efficient and reliable is what these machines are all about,” adds Gaskin. “Producers choose the reliability of ProAG Bale Runners, Stackers and Hikers because they know that time is a premium, and if they’re down, they’re losing dollars.”
The 900 Hay Hiker load capacity weight is 13,623 lbs. A 120 HP tractor with two hydraulic remotes to operate the Hay Hiker will give optimum performance for this unit.
To find out more, visit www.morris-industries. com/proag. About Morris Industries Morris Industries Ltd. is a worldwide manufacturer and distributor of agricultural equipment. With headquarters in Canada, Morris Industries Ltd. has a global network of distributors and dealers. Morris products include air drills, air carts, tillage and hay hauling equipment. www.morris-industries. com.
New 16K PLUS Bale Runner The 16K PLUS Bale Runner picks up two bales per loader cycle and unloads the entire load at once. Competitors pick up one bale per loader cycle and often unload only half the load at a time. “From the beginning to the end of the loading and unloading process, the 16K PLUS Bale Runner is the fastest and most efficient machine on the market today,” says Gaskin.
–––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
The 16K Bale PLUS Runner can handle bales 6.5’ – 8.5’ long and has a loader lift capacity of 4,500 lbs. The maximum load capacity is 18,000 lbs. This machine will pick up and stack wet or dry bales, up to 18 – 3x3 bales, 12 – 3x4 bales, and 8 – 4x4 bales per load. A 180 HP Tractor with a power beyond hydraulic system will give optimum performance for this unit.
Know how many tons you are moving with a Weigh-All Field Scale Why spend thousands of dollars for scales, when you need to only spend $300 - $500, and have immediate weights. These scales consist of special designed instruments that tie into the hydraulic line that raises the loader. They may be mounted at the point of the tee connection, or at the operator’s platform. These loader scales are economical and maintenance-free for almost all hydraulic loader applications, such as; hay handling, silage handling, TMR rations, pallet jacks, refuse handling, turf and landscape industry, etc. It’s a qualityconstructed, maintenance-free unit that is weather and corrosion resistant.
New 16K PLUS Bale Runner
New 900 Hay Hiker Designed and engineered with a GVW of 19,000 lbs. and a heavy-duty loading arm, the 900 Hay Hiker is the ideal retrieving and hauling round bale carrier. Heavy duty axles, hubs, tires and springs result in the increased GVW. The laborsaving 900 Hay Hiker can pick up 12 of the 4’ bales and eight of the 5’ or 6’ bales on the go in a single pass. The operator can approach the bale at almost any direction, turning it with the Bale Turner and loading all in one motion, all from the same side of the machine and never having

Over 20 years ago Jim Strauss suffered a major heart attack and was told he would need bypass surgery or he would die. Jim was born into a family of herbalists stretching back to the 17th century. He learned these crafts during childhood, gathering medicinal herbs in the Austrian countryside with his grandmother. He was taught that tasting herbs could detect their medicinal value, but balance and proportion were the keys to producing formulas that were effective and immediate. Jim’s heart attack was not a fluke. He admits to having lived in the fast lane, ignoring the healthier lifestyle of his parents. He considers himself fortunate as nearly half of first time heart attacks end in death. Relying on knowledge acquired over the years, he refused the recommended surgery and instead put together an herbal formula which he immediately applied to himself with outstanding results. In 3 months, his 2” arterial blockage was cleared. Since that time, Jim has shared his formula with thousands around the world who are living testimonials to its curative powers. IH “Disgusted” Shift Kits “If your older IH tractor sometimes slips out of gear or does not go into gear, or if you’re just frustrated with the way it shifts, we can probably help,” says Otto Wenz of Wenz Service, Inc. “We had some of the same problems with our own tractor and figured out a way to fix it that worked better than anything we could find at the time.” Wenz Service now offers complete kits to solve shifting problems for IH models from the 706 up to the 6788. “Most of the problems with these tractors come from the gears in the transmission not being fully engaged,” Wenz continues. “Different tractors need different parts, so while we do have complete repair kits, we

would prefer to sell only the parts needed. For this reason, farmers or their mechanics should call for parts and prices.” “All of our transmission repair parts are guaranteed,” he says. “We guarantee the ‘06 series parts for the life of our business. Kits for most other models come with a 10 year guarantee. We’ve sold more than 4,000 kits in our nearly 28 years in business. The cost of repairs with our kits are usually less than half the cost of using parts from Case IH.” In addition to IH transmission repair parts, Wenz Service also sells a number of new aftermarket parts for almost any make of tractor. “Our parts cost a lot less than most places for most brands,” Wenz says. For more information, contact Otto Wenz at Wenz Service, Inc., 1606 L Street, Tekamah, NE 68061-1289. Call 800-808-7885 or 402374-2202, or you may also visit online at www. ihdisgusted.com.

«product spotlight Evans Cooling Systems announces an endurance milestone with waterless coolant Evans Cooling Systems announced an important milestone that demonstrates the durability and long life performance of its waterless engine coolant. Joe Umstead, an independent owner/ operator, has put one million miles on the 1990 Freightliner that he bought new. At the time of purchase, he converted its Detroit Diesel Series 60 engine to use an experimental waterless coolant provided by Evans. Twenty three years and a million miles later, Joe has never changed or topped off his coolant, or used any supplemental coolant additives. “The coolant performs like the day I had it installed, and I haven’t lost a drop!” says Joe, “and I drive all 48 states and in plenty of hot weather conditions.” The waterless coolant has a boiling point of 375°F and at operating temperatures has a very low vapor pressure. The low pressure has reduced the stress on cooling system components and the hoses for Joe’s engine are the original ones. The metals in his engine have not suffered the effects of corrosion, electrolysis, or cavitation erosion. “It performs as advertised,” adds Joe, “and I never think about hot climates or altitude, except when I’m passing someone going up a steep grade. That’s when I’m reminded that operating with Evans has a performance advantage.” The engine is from the pre-EGR cooler era and the fan clutch is actuated by a “fan-stat”. The actuation temperature is elevated to reduce fan-on time for fuel economy. Mr. Umstead has been averaging about 7.5 mpg over the past 23 years. At the Mid America Truck Show, held at Louisville, KY in late March, Joe spent time at the Evans booth sharing his experience with hundreds of owner/operators. When one curious attendee asked Joe about the cost of coolant, Joe simply replied, “I have no idea how much coolant costs these days - I haven’t had to buy any for twenty three years!” Heavy-duty truck engines have changed a lot since 1990 and so have Evans waterless coolants. Today’s offerings provide better heat transfer and lower viscosity than the experimental coolants of 1990, but the basic feature of a huge separation between operating temperature and boiling point remains. It is that separation that keeps vapor out of the cooling system – vapor that makes an insulating barrier between hot metal and liquid coolant – the barrier that
June 2013
makes hot spots and brings premature death to EGR coolers. Evans Cooling Systems, Inc., headquartered in Suffield, CT, has focused on engine cooling for over 25 years. Evans is committed to improving engine performance for vehicles and stationary engines, while maintaining a cleaner, safer environment. Stop rotor loss in ALL John Deere STS and “S” series combines The ‘RPR’ Thrashing/Separating Concave System will thrash all crops by simply adding or removing the included cover plate. Thrash and separate 20-300 Bu. both wet and dry corn having the cleanest sample and fastest ground speed you’ve ever experienced with zero rotor loss. Thrash and separate soybeans (green stem of dry) and wheat with NO rotor loss.
With the cover plates on in a 9870 you can thrash 60 Bu. popcorn with a twelve row head with an excellent test. Five-foot-tall rye grass has been thrashed with no losses; 300 Bu. corn with a 16 row head at 18% moisture produced 5300 Bu. per hour at 4 1/2 MPH with no loss. This comes out to 1.477 Bu. per second! The concave is made of 1” round bars that have a restricted flow notch with progressive open bar spacing. Where the crops come in the spacing is 7/8” on the right side and 11/8” opening on the left side. This lets crops separate in the thrashing area and not travel to the back separating area. The RPR Thrashing/Separating Concave System was prototyped in 2011, sold to a limited number of customers in 2012, and is now publicly available. For more information, contact CM Welding, Inc. of Frankfort, IN at 765-258-4024 and ask for Donnie. Or you may visit online at www. cmweldinginc.com.
