Russell Sonnenberg felt that tree had its own character and enjoys using it as a trademark that makes his work distinguishable from all other artists. Russell never entered art competitions or painted for fame, as so many other modern day artists. He just wanted to paint something that would touch the hearts of tractor collectors and people who have those nostalgic fond memories of the farm life. People love to reflect back on the simpler times of the forties and fifties. With this in mind, and a great deal of research, Russell goes to work on each painting treating it as his newest masterpiece.

ussell Sonnenberg is the artist behind The Yesteryear Collection, a series of 45 tractor prints. His works have been very popular with tractor enthusiasts. What fascinates these collectors about Russell Sonnenberg art is his brilliant ability to capture the essence of nostalgia and bring it back to the viewers’ memory in vivid detail. “Oh I remember,” is a common phrase that people often use when admiring one of his pictures. Russell grew up in Kossuth County in Iowa about 26 miles northeast of Algona. He had been quoted as saying, “I grew up in the horse and buggy days.” He began painting as a child mainly due his Mother’s encouragement. Of course, his life on the farm heavily influenced his work a lot. In his younger days, he worked as a tractor mechanic at an Allis Chalmer dealership. His fascination with Allis Chalmers is evident in the number of paintings he has done of that specific brand. Over the past 42 years, he had painted various nostalgic country and farm scenes. At the suggestion of his lifelong wife Audrey, “paint what you know” he returned to painting tractors. Russell enjoys feeling close to nature and purposely puts a bur oak in the left side of his paintings. He has always September 2012

A great deal of research goes into each painting to make sure that it is historically accurate. In order to pay very close attention to the mechanical detail of the various tractor models, he uses his camera to take photographs. Russell said, “I take a picture of this part and then that part, plus I make sure that I take the pictures at the angle I want so I can use them for reference. Also, I like to take photos at 2:00 in the afternoon because then the shadows aren’t weird and the sun isn’t as harsh as it is at noon. I also like to have owner’s manuals (as a reference).” Each painting requires about 150 hours of painting time, plus about 100 hours of research. He says each time he has timed himself, it comes up to be about the same for each painting.

Russell has painted many different models trying to make sure that nobody gets left out. Many artists will focus on John Deere and International. Russell paints models of Allis Chalmers, Minneapolis Moline, Ford, Oliver, Massey-Harris, and Case to round out the strong blend of collectible tractors. Russell paints for the sheer enjoyment of the craft usually during the long winter months in the basement of his home in Forest City, Iowa. The Climate Action Reserve adopts nitrogen management protocol for corn farmers to achieve emissions reductions through reduced fertilizer application The Climate Action Reserve, North America’s premier carbon offset registry, adopted its Nitrogen Management Project Protocol in July. The protocol provides opportunities for farmers to generate carbon offsets by implementing agricultural management practices that reduce the application of synthetic nitrogen fertilizer to corn crops in the Midwestern United States. The application of nitrogen fertilizer releases significant amounts of nitrous oxide into the atmosphere. N2O is a potent greenhouse gas (GHG) 310 times more potent at trapping heat in the atmosphere than carbon dioxide. More than two-thirds of all N2O emissions in the U.S. come from management of agricultural land. Through more efficient application of nitrogen fertilizer under this protocol, farmers can achieve reductions in GHG emissions, generate carbon offsets, earn revenues from participation in the carbon market, and continue to provide an important commodity to a growing world population. “The agriculture sector plays a critical role in reducing atmospheric greenhouse gases as a voluntary source of emission reductions,” stated Linda Adams, Chair of the Climate Action Reserve Board of Directors. “Better agricultural management practices will provide readily available and low-cost solutions to achieve greenhouse gas emissions reductions and mitigate global climate change. We are very pleased to adopt the Nitrogen Management Project Protocol and provide an avenue for farmers to earn financial incentives as they help to solve the challenge of climate change.” Due to significant variability in the potential to reduce N2O emissions

created by different soil and climate conditions around the U.S., the first version of the protocol is only applicable to corn crops in 12 Midwestern states: Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota and Wisconsin. However, the Nitrogen Management Project Protocol is modular and designed to accommodate additional crop systems, geographic regions, and agricultural management practices as data and analysis warrant their inclusion. “Carbon offsets are the 21st century crop for the agricultural sector. For far too long, the role of agriculture in climate change mitigation has been ignored, but appropriate attention to agricultural offsets is building a full head of steam,” said Debbie Reed, President of DRD Associates and Executive Director at Coalition on Agricultural Greenhouse Gases (C-AGG). “Protocols such as this are absolutely necessary to allow farmers to harvest carbon in order to achieve a successful yield of reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and increases in revenue streams. Market incentives can serve to reward farmers for stewardship activities, and done correctly, will ensure that the agriculture sector will play a serious and needed role in climate stabilization.” While earned offsets can be used in the voluntary carbon market at this time, California state officials have indicated interest in incorporating agriculture protocols, including those

In addition to achieving economic benefits for farmers and reducing GHG emissions, the nitrogen management protocol also prevents the contamination of waterways and significantly improves local and downstream water quality, which in turn enhances wildlife habitat. The Climate Action Reserve is a private nonprofit organization representing international interests in addressing climate change and bringing together participants from the government, environment and business sectors. As the premier carbon offset registry in North America, it works to ensure environmental benefit, integrity and transparency in the carbon market. It establishes high quality standards for quantifying and verifying greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction projects, oversees independent third-party verification bodies, issues carbon credits generated from such projects and tracks the transaction of credits over time in a transparent, publicly-accessible system. The Second North American Owner of a KIOTI CS2410 Subcompact Tractor Gives High Marks John Stover needed a machine that could help him move 22 tons of dirt. Little did he know that his purchasing decision would ultimately make him a part of history in the category of subcompact tractors. A systems administrator for the US Department of Defense, Stover was looking to fill in with topsoil the space left behind after moving the location of his swimming pool to another area on his 15-acre property. Stover worked with Gerald Nolt, manager of Perry Power Equipment in Loysville, PA to find a high-performing tractor he could use to do everything from mowing the lawn to moving large amounts of material around his property. Nolt recommended a machine new to North America that he thought would best serve Stover’s needs: The KIOTI CS2410 subcompact tractor. On May 15, Nolt helped Stover buy the second CS2410 sold in North America. The machine had just arrived at Perry Power Equipment on May 10. As a distinguished KIOTI 5-Paw Dealer, Perry’s was one of the first dealerships in the country to receive this high-demand product for retail sale. Needless to say, the CS2410 was not on the showroom floor for very long. And Stover, for one, couldn’t be happier with the purchase. “I looked at a number of competitive brand subcompact tractors,” Stover said. “I was considering a John Deere, but the KIOTI had pretty much the same features – and the Deere was quite a bit more expensive.” Stover said he could appreciate the machine’s heavier-weight, power and ability to handle larger scale chores, while taking advantage of its smaller size and nimble maneuverability. “The KIOTI really helped me with this first job and it went better and quicker than I thought it would,” Stover said. “After doing my research on the KIOTI CS2410 and the competition, then putting my new tractor to work, I feel like I made the right decision.” The CS2410 subcompact tractor offers a 24.5 horsepower diesel engine. The optimized engine combines large power output with low fuel consumption to save users money. The 20.7 horsepower power takeoff (PTO) is among the highest in this size class, giving owners the ability to power a multitude of implements, including an optional frontend loader, mid-mount mower and backhoe. Stover’s purchase included both the loader and mower attachments. September 2012

Stover’s neighbor has owned a full-sized KIOTI tractor for years and is pleased with its performance, Stover said. For that reason, Nolt also discussed the KIOTI’s larger CK20 model, but Stover was convinced the CS2410 was a better choice for the types of work he’d be using the tractor for.

Using Readings for Finding Faults in Electrical Fencing

Corralling your livestock can be a cumbersome – especially if your herds have a habit of wandering off to your neighbor’s property as soon as your back is turned. No fence is too high for wild animals to get at your precious livestock either.

Tips for Effective Grounding It is integral for you to check your grounding system in order for your chosen energizer to work at optimum efﬁciency. An electrical circuit will be complete as soon as an animal, like a cow, comes into contact with the ground and the wire. Provided that you have effectively grounded your system, an animal can receive one pulse of electrical energy per second. This is also why damp ground makes for the best conditions for electric fences. This can be difﬁcult to achieve during a drought so make sure that you install your energizer in an area on your property that is moist throughout the seasons. An Earth Wire Return System can also come in handy if your land does not consist of any moist conditions to speak of. In such cases you can try the following troubleshooting tips:

Grounding in Dry Soil

Type One – In this type of configuration, the fence itself does not loop around to the energizer. In such a scenario you do not need to know in which direction the current is flowing to determine the fault. Type Two – The fence loops back to the energizer in this particular configuration. In order to find the location of the fault you will have to determine the direction of the current. If a fence contains no loops or faults you will experience a decrease in electrical surge as you move away from where the energizer is located. Fencing with multiple faults will experience excess amounts of current at some points. The current will exhibit a drop in electrical surge as your fault finder detects a fault. As soon as you find the fault in question, backtrack and find the point in which there is a noticeable change in electrical surge at both ends.

3. Solar Energizers for Summer

Farmers can use a bentonite in their grounding system for dry soil. It works by absorbing water from the ground. The mixture is made from bentonite powder and water which can be easily poured into 3 inch holes. The ground poles can be inserted in the center.

Farmers can also choose to insert more grounding rods in their grounding system for dry conditions. A typical grounding system consists of three 4 to 6 foot galvanized grounding rods that are inserted ten feet apart. If you lack a moist surface for your system, you can add another grounding rod to the original set up. This will be effective in completing the electrical circuit between the animal, energizer and the ground thereby allowing for electrical pulses.

Yes, your electric fence can also be energized with the help of Mother Nature. Solar powered fence charges work great on remote fenced areas. All a farmer has to do is ensure that he places his solar energizer and fencing in an area that receives a constant supply of the sun’s nourishing rays for at least 5 to 6 hours. This will be enough to keep any wayward herd fenced in until it is time to round them up again. Since the devices also store solar energy they can also be counted on to power a fenced in area even on cloudy days. Solar powered energizers might be a bit pricier than their electrically charged counterparts however they do offer an energy efﬁcient solution to the farmer who cannot afford to keep up with electric bills. But perhaps one of the most obvious beneﬁts of installing solar powered energizers is preventing spot grazing.

How to Install your Grounding System

Prevent Spot Grazing

Start off by driving three galvanized ground rods ten feet apart on your chosen area. The rods should be about 4 to 6 feet by ½ inch and can be placed in either a triangular pattern or in a straight line. They can also be placed at an angle but make sure that you leave off six inches above ground for the ground clamps.

Many farmers know how devastating the effects of spot grazing can be. The phenomenon is caused by over grazing and has the tendency to leave an over grazed pasture sparse of any vegetation for a long time. Electrical fences make it easier for farmers to control their livestock’s grazing habits. Not only does it ensure that the animals do not stray and graze on your neighbor’s lands, they give the grass time to grow. Since these energizers are powered by the sun’s rays it also makes it convenient for farmers to initiate managed spot grazing without having to worry about their electrical fences shutting down on them.

4. Ultra Low Impedance Low impedance electric fence energizers come with low impedance to ensure an unhindered electrical charge. However there is also one that comes with ultra low impedance. Such an energizer is only manufactured by Power Wizard Shock Technology. What’s the difference? As discussed, energizers with low impedance technology prevent any weeds or snow that may be touching the fence wire and hindering the ﬂow of electrical surges. Ultra low impedance energizers on the other hand are designed to be more durable and efﬁcient than their low impedance counterparts. In other words, they will ensure that fences are supplied with the appropriate amount of electrical pulses even under the worse weather and ground conditions.

5. Fencing with Wire Braid Most farmers use polytapes or thick polyropes in order to make their fencing visible. However, if you prefer braiding that is strong enough to withstand windy conditions then polywire or polybraid would be your best bet.

Different manufacturers offer different grades of electrical braiding for their energizers. For example, HorseSafe offers a braid that is made with six strands of .25 gauge tinned copper wire. The product also comes with a five year warranty which means that the material is strong enough to ensure a sufficient amount of voltage along a fenced area for a long time. Other enhancements in these braids include rugged polypropylene cores, polyester fiber jackets and a new checkered design that makes them highly visible. Purdue scientists working to make drought-resistant crops Purdue University scientists are working in several areas in the hope that future dry spells don't have the same effects on crops as this year's drought. Mitch Tuinstra, a professor and Wickersham Chair in agronomy, is studying tropical varieties of corn to understand which genes allow the plants to survive in hot, dry weather. The objective is to find ways to integrate those genes into corn that is bred to produce high yields in the Midwest. "There are all these other genes out there in these tropical gene pools. We are looking for those genes that enhance the adaptability of temperate maize," Tuinstra said. Mike Mickelbart, an associate professor of horticulture, studies something similar to drought tolerance - water-use efficiency. The goal is to get the highest yields in corn using the least amount of water. "Our ultimate goal would be to provide plant breeders with genetic markers for water-use efficiency so they can incorporate this trait into their breeding programs," Mickelbart said. He said there are genes in corn that affect transpiration, a process in which pores called stomata open and close on a leaf surface and allow water to escape, like sweat on a person. His research is aimed at finding variations in those genes that affect the ability of a plant to use water as efficiently as possible. Tony Vyn, a professor of agronomy, is evaluating droughttolerant corn hybrids developed in the private sector. He is comparing their performance against conventional hybrids in different stress situations, including high plant density and situations in which nutrients are limited. A major part of Vyn's research involves determining whether optimum management practices for so-called droughttolerant hybrids are different than for conventional hybrids currently in fields. "It really has to be the integration of genetics and best management practices so that we can get the most corn per gallon of water and per ounce of nutrient," he said. The Purdue Center for Global Food Security focuses on education, research and development, and advocacy efforts to find solutions to world hunger. The center recently received a $5 million grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to study ways to control the Striga weed, which infests sorghum and other crops in Africa. Center director Gebisa Ejeta, a distinguished professor of agronomy and 2009 World Food Prize laureate, is leading the research effort aimed at improving Striga-resistant sorghum that can tolerate drought conditions, said Gary Burniske, the center's managing director. Ejeta and others are testing plants this year in field plots. "We're looking for an increase in yield under droughty conditions in different types of soils with different nutrient availabilities," Burniske said. Dear Befuddled: Estate planning is something, as a term, is bantered about by anyone from banks, to financial planners to trust departments to CPA firms. When a company or individual professes to do estate planning, and advertises as such, normally you need to see what type of firm is making this offer to determine what their capability is in the estate planning field. Banks and trust companies offer estate planning, but truly they can only offer you advice on how trusts work and how their services would fit into your planning options. CPA firms, especially larger ones, advertise they have an ‘estate planning’ specialist to answer questions regarding estate planning. Insurance companies and agents claim to do estate planning. Then again, the simple act of buying an insurance contract to protect your loved ones is, by its very definition, estate planning. You’re planning your estate so that upon your death, there’ll be money there to meet any demands. Ultimately, when you need to take your ideas and thoughts and put them into a legal document - a will, an irrevocable trust, a deed, etc. - you will need to go to an attorney to have these documents drafted. There are two people who can do this for you - an attorney in fact, or licensed attorney, and, of course, yourself. There is no law against you deciding to write things out on a piece of paper and having it stand up in court as long as you followed all the guidelines - witnesses, notary, dated, etc. I always recommend going to an attorney for this drafting. I, myself, am not an attorney nor do I do any drafting of any legal documents for any of my clients. I have never done this type of work for any of my clients in thirty-three years of practice as I am not legally licensed to do so. If my clients pay me for counseling, and they decide they A8

Once you feel like you’ve expressed yourself and I have encapsulated those feelings, desires and wishes into a summation of the notes of our discussions that would be presentable to an attorney, you take a copy of the notes to your meeting with your attorney for drafting and you pay him or her to draft it for you. Or I can send them to him or her and be available to answer any questions your attorney might have. Where you get the information from regarding what you want in your estate plan is up to you. You can talk to your attorney, you can talk to your CPA, your banker, your trust department, your ﬁnancial planner, the local Adult Farm Business Management, etc., etc. But only an attorney can draft the information you want encapsulated within a ‘legal’ document and only s/he can charge fees for doing so. No other entity can charge legal fees - including me - and pay those fees to the attorney later. My job is simple. I listen to what people tell me about their lives, their history, how their farm business came to be, how it’s progressed over the years, and, ultimately, where things are going to go in the future. The best estate planning I’ve ever seen is when you decide to move all of your assets during your lifetime via numerous methods so upon your death, you go out the same way you came in - without a penny to your name. Sometimes this is possible - sometimes it’s not. I make notes of our meetings, of questions you’ve asked me, items we’ve discussed - transfer of machinery, livestock, the farming operation, which kids are good, which ones have had an ‘interesting’ life so far, what you’d like to see done to

Sweet September The sharp crack of a close-by lightning strike and immediate house shaking clap of thunder sends Miss Maggie the sheltie, skittering and whimpering from the couch to the safety of my feet under the desk – the boogie man can’t get her there! That was way too close for comfort, so I shut off and unplug the computer and the television for safety’s sake. Rain begins drumming down on the heat cracked soil, the result of this year’s drought. The moisture is most welcomed by people, animals and the thirsty soil and hopefully, it will prevent or put out some of the many fires we have been experiencing of late. Prairie fires are much feared here on the plains, as it’s miles and miles away from anywhere. The fire departments have to drive very long distances to reach the trouble spots. Most of the ranchers and farmers in my area are members of the local volunteer fire departments, and all have filled water tanks on old pickups that can be utilized at a moment’s notice. There isn’t much I can do outside right now, so I’m going to tackle some of those ‘before winter sets in’ type of jobs. It’s a good time to clean out closets and dresser drawers. I take everything out and put it on the bed, then I clean the space (wash down the walls and shelves and vacuum the floors of the closets and wipe out and reline the dresser drawers. I use an idea sent in to me to use typing paper as drawer liner and put a little sachet or scented powder under the papers. By using several layers, I can remove and discard any damaged liner and still have lined drawers. As I put things back in the closet, I check each garment. Does it fit? Do I want to wear it again? Will it match/ go with anything else I own? I pack September 2012

Then I decide what to do with the discards: give to charity, garage or tag sale, or recycle by taking off buttons and tearing into cleaning rags. I see ‘no cents’ in tossing old t-shirts and then buying rags for cleaning. My mother had a rag bag hanging in our back porch all the years we were growing up, and anything that could be used to wipe up spills, scrub a ﬂoor or help the handyman mechanic was put into the rag bag. September is also a big month for canning and putting up food for many of us, and I’m no exception. The few apples that managed to avoid grasshoppers, hail storms and late frosts will be picked and made into apple pies, apple butter and apple jelly and juice. The apple jelly will be made in small jars and set on a special shelf for Christmas gift giving. I picked some Buffalo berries in July and made jelly from those too. If we don’t get a late hail storm, I will have a few tomatoes (what the deer and grasshoppers don’t get) and perhaps some squash and pumpkins. Again, the word is ‘maybe’. This year with the drought and hail storms, the ‘pickin’s will be slim for a lot of folks and we will have to make do as we’ve done so many times before in agriculture. It’s heartbreaking to see your crops and pastures burn up from 100°+ heat, lack of rain, a ﬁre, hail storm or wind, but we will prevail and we will get through this as we have before. We shall ‘cut corners to circles’ and we will survive. Hope springs eternal, and next year will be better!

CRITTER BATH TIPS

ALL BALLED UP

If you give your dog or cat a bath in the tub or shower, put a heavy bathmat down before you start so the animal has some solid footing. (My Sheltie Miss Maggie DOES NOT like baths!) I also put a ball of old nylon net in the drain before I start to catch any hair clumps that would otherwise go down to the hinterlands and plug up the plumbing. When we are through with the torture of a bath, I towel dry the dog in the bathtub and let her shake as much water before I take her out.I know it’s clean water, but I really don’t want to mop all the floors in the house again. –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

If your kids love any type of melons like mine do, this is a fantastic idea: Buy several melons while they are in season. Cut them in half and take out the seeds and strings and then either use a melon baller or a small cookie scoop to make the melon balls (for some reason, my kids always ate more if I made the pieces round.) Put the balls on cookie sheets and set in the freezer until frozen solid. Then bag up into the heavy freezer bags for use in winter. I’ve seen the commercial melon balls in grocery stores and the prices were outrageous. A few minutes spent making your own saves you $$$$ in the long run. Now, if you don’t care if your melon pieces are round or not, you can do what I do now: I just peel the melons, cut them into bite sized chunks and freeze. –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

GREASE SPOTS I had a call from a lady last week wanting to know how to get fresh grease spots out of a carpet without chemicals. One method I’ve used with pretty fair success is simply cornmeal. Pour a good amount of cornmeal over the grease and work the meal into the spot with your hand. Let it set overnight and then vacuum. The dry meal will absorb the grease and rarely leaves a spot. –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

CHEAP HANDCLEANER Fall is the time of year when many farmers go over the machinery they used all summer, repairs are made and joints are greased before the machine is stored away for the winter. Naturally, this means lots of hand washing and a lot of soap. A reader wrote that she just buys the cheapest dish soap possible – usually the store brand and that’s what her guys use instead of that expensive shop degreaser hand cleaner. She says this saves them quite a bit of money and in this economy, every penny counts. –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

FARMERS MARKET TIME No matter where you live, city or small town, somewhere near you is a Farmer’s Market where fresh home-grown fruits and vegetables available. The advantage to this is that you actually get to meet the person(s) who grew the food, and you cut out the middle-man in most cases. If you are planning on making food gifts for the coming Holiday season, you will want to look through your supply of freezer bags, jelly jars, canning lids, sugar, etc. as well as spices and vinegar. Check your local advertising papers, flyers at supermarkets, etc. for places and times as many of these markets are only open one or two days a week for a few hours. Once folks find out about the fresh produce, it doesn’t last long. –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

CORN ON THE COB – QUICK AND EASY A friend of mine shared the neatest way to cook and clean fresh corn – possibly the slickest trick I’ve seen in a long time. Suzy says, “Take one ear of fresh corn (do not shuck at all), place the ear in the microwave and cook for 3 minutes. Remove the ear from the microwave and lay on a cutting board. Using a sharp knife, cut the stem end off about 1/2” up on the bottom kernels. Then, grab the top of the ear and pull. I hang on to the bottom of the ear under the shuck – all of the shuck and the silk will slip right off. No silk to pick off, the corn is perfectly cooked and it tastes wonderful! Butter up and enjoy!” (I tried this and it works! Of course, the disadvantage is that you can only cook one ear at a time, but I’m thinking that energy-wise and time-wise, it’s better.)

LONG TERM SAVING HINTS FOR CLOTHING It’s almost school time and the big stores have all of the latest fall fashions out for the ‘leap into fall’ at a price I can’t afford. We always ‘leaped’ into the bargain bins. The stores will have summer t-shirts, shorts, capri pants and light jackets on sale. Some for as little as 50 cents each for the shirts and a couple of dollars for the jackets as they try to get the summer inventory out the door. Most school kids will wear a nice t-shirt every day to school and a 50 cent one will last just as long as a $15 one. Stretch those $$$ as much as you can. –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

COOLER SMELLS BANISHED Did you have a big cooler that you used to take food to the field? Did somebody forget to take the potato salad out when you got home and it sat outside for three days? When you opened it up, did it have a real bad case of ‘cooler breath’? There is hope. Just pour 1/2 - 1 cup of fresh coffee grounds in the bottom of the cooler and close the lid for several days. I don’t know how it works, but the coffee will absorb all those nasty odors (if it’s really bad, you may have to repeat), and you have saved your cooler to use for another year or two. (This also works for freezers that are accidently unplugged and the stuff inside turns green! I didn’t believe it until I saw it, but it did work. The lady poured a full pound of fresh coffee in the cleaned out/stinking freezer, shut the lid and left it for a week. She then vacuumed out the coffee and repeated the shut the lid for 7 days. She’s still using the freezer and there is absolutely NO SMELL!) –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

WATER SAVING A reader wrote after my last column about water conservation in the home: “I do a lot of cooking and am continually washing my hands. I now use a dedicated pan to wash my hands in with soap and have an ice cream bucket under the faucet to catch the rinse water, which I then put in the pan. When it’s full, I take the pan outside and pour the water on my plants in the flower barrels. I’m amazed at how much water I have used and wasted because I wasn’t paying attention. The soap doesn’t hurt the flowers, in fact, it seems to be keeping some of the bugs away. The third technique is to prioritize your daily to-do list, and do your high-priority stuff first. Your list for the day might be: pick up milk, mow the yard, buy a birthday gift for Saturday, and exercise. Are all items equally important? Maybe you must pick up milk for your family. Maybe you want to mow the yard before it gets too long. You know you have to exercise--it is a priority, and so you admit you could get the birthday gift tomorrow.

ORGANIZE YOUR FALL TIME: Yes you can! A few weeks before school starts, I start to get a knot in my stomach. I am not ready for fall. The kids aren’t ready for fall. Where did summer go? How are we going to get everything done this fall? How can we keep from overbooking ourselves and feeling so rushed? I feel a queasy panic begin. Can you relate to this? Many of us spend the last few weeks of summer commenting about how busy our lives will get this fall. Activities and school start up again, and, good grief, even Christmas is coming! Life gets hectic. How can we be less busy, but still accomplish what we want? I will share a basic time management technique to help keep things under control. It can keep you and your family on track for fall or for life. For me, the best step to manage time effectively and prevent becoming overwhelmed is to have a plan. The experts call it “goal setting.” It is simple. Set life goals, then five-year goals, and then oneyear goals. After that, pull the one-year goals into monthly and then weekly, and finally daily to-do lists. I think of my to-do lists as the physical representation of where I want my life to go. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. We’ve all heard about goal setting. It feels a little like going to the dentist or buying life insurance. It is one of those things most of us agree we probably would be wise to do, someday, but we delay because it isn’t “fun” or the rewards don’t seem as tangible as a new purchase or a remodel. Why is it important to set goals today? Because our time is our life! That’s it. No commercials. You can’t rewind your life tape when you get to the end. Do you know anyone who spends more time and energy researching a new purchase, like

a toaster oven or television, than they spend planning their life? Think about that the next time you spend a day at the mall looking for something to make your life better. I say that because I have been there, at the mall, unconsciously trying to fix my life by purchasing just the right thing. Now I have discovered if I set goals and work on them, I really can change my life. I believe this. Another funny thing is that planning or goal setting really doesn’t take long. Less than a day at the mall. You could grab a piece of paper and be done in less than an hour. Here is a manageable list of life areas to set goals: · Family/Relationship · Professional/Career · Financial · Personal/Self development · Community Service · Spiritual/Religious · Social/Relaxation · Health/Exercise There. That wasn’t so bad, was it? It was a reasonable number (8). You might even cross out or prioritize the goal areas. Put them in order of priority for you. You could also create other categories for yourself. Some of us might even admit to a “material stuff” or “travel” category, acknowledging that many of us look forward to and plan major purchases and vacations. Regardless of the categories we choose, most of us could spend five to ten minutes thinking about each area of our life and jotting down some life goals. So what is the trick to make goal-setting really work? Well, there are three tricks or techniques.

First, we must break broad life goals down into practical action steps that eventually get incorporated into a daily to-do list. A broad goal such as “I want to spend the rest of my life being more physically fit” might become a one-year goal to “Lose thirty pounds.” The monthly goal could be “Join a health club,” and then the weekly goal would be to “Exercise on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday morning.” Effective goals are specific, measurable, and doable. If they aren’t specific (Lose thirty pounds), how do you decide when you reach your goal? If they aren’t measurable (Get on the scale), how can you track your progress? And, finally, if they aren’t doable (Lose thirty pounds in two weeks. Hah!), well, it won’t be realistic for you to get it done. A tip from those who are consistently better at achieving their goals than the rest of us: Recognize life’s interruptions, and make contingency plans for your goals right away. For example, plan that if you miss exercising once during the week, you will get up early on Saturday to do it. Contingency plan development on the front end is what separates the professional from the amateur goal setter. Another tip I learned in Weight Watchers is this: Recommit. Recommit. Recommit. If you were on a diet and fell off the wagon last night, don’t quit. Simply recommit. Recommit as many times per month, week, or even day as you need to get back on tract and eventually achieve your desire! The second technique is to save and periodically review your life goals to track your progress. It won’t take long. Just jot it on your calendar quarterly. Pull out your original plan. Remind yourself of your

When I make time to work on priority to-do items, I am happier. I feel satisfied because I make progress in life areas that really matter to me. How I spend my day or my week or my life is my choice. So, next time you get bogged down with fall busyness, consider goal setting to prioritize and simplify your life. goal Setting Supplies & Books To make the transition from life goals to daily to-do lists, consider buying or creating a personal planner. Check out office supply stores to find all sorts of planners and calendars. Don’t be shy about creating your own categories and tailoring them to fit your life. Something will fit your style! here is only one real judge; unfortunately, there are those amongst us that think that means them. Herein lies the problem associated with many livestock judging experiences. Instead of selecting the right animal to head the class, the championship becomes more about politics and popularity than it does about merit.

THE HORSE TRADE That Produced the First of a String of Champions

Having judged at some of the most prestigious livestock shows in the country and a lot of county fairs, I can assure you that I’ve never walked out of the show ring knowing for certain that I had picked the champion. How is it then that hearts are broken and fortunes are made or lost on just such decisions. The answer may lie more in the self-serving agenda of the judge than it does in the integrity of the show. The heart and soul of the exhibitor, especially those young 4-H kids, is often ignored at the expense of integrity. Is this the lesson we want learned in a competitive livestock show? To further compound the judging experience, consider the life changing mistakes that have undermined the entire livestock industry. The wounds of these misguided decisions may never heal and in some cases have caused major setbacks in breed development. It’s time for change! So what’s wrong with the way it is? Livestock judging is an art and a skill of subjectivity, so subjective that there isn’t even total agreement among the so-called experts. This is not to say that we don’t have competent judges, because there are many very good ones available. It does suggest that the present system of judging is antiquated and needs to be ﬁxed. For a 4-H kid, the show ring can be a daunting experience. From fear to disappointment, the emotions can become raw and frayed. This is where the judge can play a pivotal role in the show ring experience. To have a young boy or girl enter the show ring with high expectations, and return with only one of jubilation or one of total rejection is totally destructive to the whole learning experience. For the many kids that participate, most will leave with a feeling of nothingness. For those adults that support the system, they will say it is a good experience of life to be exposed to the real world of winning and losing. To those, my response is one of total empathy for their kids. Competition in the livestock judging ring can’t be compared with that of a sporting event or a A14

style show. It’s not about speed or endurance — not even about ability or beauty. It’s about the bottom line of agriculture to go forth from this educational experience with the skills and the tools to make a living producing livestock on a profitable basis. What has to be done to fix it? First we acknowledge that there are differences – differences brought about by feeding and selection. An explanation of good, sound feeding practices and a demonstration of selection factors would be good for starters. You then begin to group the entries in accordance to the explanation and demonstration that you have just given. In reality, you have just conducted a mini evaluation clinic, so that the kids know and understand what is happening. Your job as a judge is to educate these youngsters, not simply stand out there in the middle of the ring, as though you were a God that could see right through these animals. You have a pretty good idea what is under the hide or else you wouldn’t be judging. But it’s not a science, and there’s no real proof until the carcass is hanging on the rail and cut ability and quality are evaluated. No livestock market class should be complete or finalized until the data of a cut ability test is available to the judge. Even then there will be some close calls that will require you to regress back to the show ring before making final judgment. The final placing should be presented at a follow-up meeting in an educational format that allows for plenty of discussion. To prepare for such a session there should be photos taken of the live animals, showing front, side, and rear views. These photos should be presented in conjunction with the carcass data, with a full set of understandable, objective reasons. This is where objectivity comes into the show

Like most all things I learned as a young boy, I gleaned it from my father, the horse trader. I grew up believing that bartering was the currency of choice. There were a lot of horses that exchanged hands, but seldom did I ever see any cash. Such was the assigned agenda for purchasing the ﬁrst calf for my 4-H baby beef project. Dad told me to ride my pony Sunshine, and her colt over to our neighbors about two miles up the road. Our neighbor, Lee Carter, had a reputable herd of Angus cattle, from which I was supposed to select my ﬁrst calf. Little did I know that Lee was going to fall in love with my pony’s baby, a foal named Trigger. Mr. Carter said, “You can have your pick of any calf in the herd for an even trade for Trigger.” Trigger was pretty special, so it had never entered my mind to trade him off. But my Dad had already ingrained me with the philosophy of never falling in love with livestock. According to him every four legged creature on the farm was for sale for a price. Determining value and getting your price was a lesson well learned and still being taught today. I wasn’t very old, but old enough to know that I was getting the better end of this deal. So I knew it was an offer that I would have to accept — even if it meant giving up the only foal my pony ever produced. The upside of the deal was that Trigger would still be close to home, and I would probably be able to continue a close relationship with the pony. Little did I ever envision just how close that relationship would be? On a beautiful summer afternoon my best friend, Myril Shultz, stopped by to play. Without any agenda, we saddled up a

couple of horses and went for a ride. Before we knew it we were at the Carter Ranch and chompin’ on the bit for more action. That’s the way it was when you traveled with Myril – always looking for more action, usually mischievous. This time it was "let’s break Trigger to ride", meaning grab a lariat and head for the pasture. With him it was always “you take the big one, I’ll take the little one”. So with a wide loop and colt in tow, we were ready to ride. Snubbed tight to the saddle horn, Trigger was ﬁghting with all his might, and at just the right moment Myril was on his back— only to endure more buck, kick, and strike until one leg got tangled in the rope. Needless to say, this turned into a disastrous moment in our lives. The leg was broken, our spirit was broken, and we still had to meet Mr. Carter, for whom we had never received permission. That ride back to the Carter house was the longest ride of our young lives. We were scared! How were we going to explain this? Lee was the kindest man in the world. He simply said, “Go get the ol’ H International. Hook it on to the stone boat, and let’s all head back to the pasture”. So we loaded up Trigger, and back to the barn we went. Mr. Carter was like the community veterinarian, so it wasn’t long before the leg was in splints, wrapped, and the pony hobbling around----almost acting frisky. “There, he will be good as new, and you guys meant well, so all is well that ends well.” These were Lee’s exact words as he gave us a little shoulder to shoulder snuggy. It was one of life’s greatest lessons, as the pony healed up almost as good as new, and the chosen calf went on to win the championship at the Burke County Fair. Was it fate or did the judge get it right?

This is a gooseneck unit that splits into two pieces for access in or out the front. There is a 6' alley way in the center of the unit that is 33'4" long. On each end of the alley there are two sets of double 6' gates that open between the split-gooseneck hitch and between the rear axle assemblies. This gives the rancher the ability to tie into the sorting system with any type of portable corral or stock trailer in the ﬁeld. This unit's hydraulic system will set the unit down on the ground, and when ready to move — lift it up for transport. The hydraulic is run by a 12-volt battery charged by a solar panel. This helps in the fact that a rancher can work cattle in the ﬁeld without moving the whole herd to a different location to do the sorting and loading out.

By Steve Huneke ring. Because of the many sideline differing opinions, it’s where we bring full closure to the judgmental decision making, for both the parents and their kids. Isn’t this the least we should expect from a 4-H project that required so much time, energy, and investment? For some this project may have started with the selection of the dam and sire, making it a once in a youthful lifetime decision, or at least a yearlong vested venture. Doesn’t this kind of a commitment cry out for more than just a ten minute walk through a show ring, listening to a canned set of reasons the judge has given for a jillion classes in the past? Doesn’t your child deserve more? There is nothing more special on the face of this earth than our children, and isn’t it our responsibility to guide and educate them in their decision making? Their road map to the future may have nothing to do with livestock, but aren’t we obligated to build them a strong foundation from which they can make sound choices? Before you hire your next judge, check out credentials. Is he or she qualiﬁed, or is this a political appointment of convenience? Or, worse yet, didn’t you really care who it was, as long as you had all of the judging positions ﬁlled prior to fair time? I’ve witnessed some cases where I’m convinced that the only requirement was that of being a live body. In

other cases, cost was the only determining factor. The selection of livestock judges is one of the most important management decisions of any county fair. For the sake of the future of the livestock industry — make it a good one! I hope I have gotten your attention, as I’m convinced that this is a serious omission of concern by many county fairs. County fairs have a serious obligation to the public for whom they serve, and to the cause for which they are dedicated. Our forefathers meant for it to be more than just a few days of pleasure and entertainment. It was meant to be a yearly revitalization of rural America for which we could showcase with pride, to all of America, our accomplishments. The livestock industry is currently in such a ﬂux of disarray that we seem to be moving without direction. My challenge to the county fairs is to help bring the industry back into the focus for which it was intended — producing a product that is acceptable and in demand by the consuming public. My challenge to fellow livestock judges: Please make this a year of renewed commitment to a cause far greater than that of ourselves. I’ll see you in the livestock arena!

Just got done with my kids playing in some state ball games. The games were well run, and we had great success. No championships, but that’s OK – we still made it to that game! We ended up with two 2nd place finishes. Frustrating, because we thought we had both games in hand. Either way, both were played quite well. The kids were as disappointed as we were at first, but I changed the tone from disappointment to being very proud of how they played, and even though we aimed for the first place, the run to and in the championship was a lot of fun. Vince Lombardi, who most of you know as being a past UCLA coach was once quoted as saying: “Winning isn’t everything, it is the only thing.” If we believed that quote, we would have to consider our whole weekend a total loss and disappointment. Yes, everyone wants to win – winning is fun, but only one team can win. And if the others can still have fun while coming in 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th, it’s still an awesome experience. I also disagree with the great golfer Walter Hagen who once said, “No one remembers who came in second.” There are so many things to be happy about in life. How can we complain about just getting to the championship games? We left the game healthy – and with metal. And, we can also compete again some day. It has been said that some people take winning too seriously. It is very sad when we see parents get into arguments with umpires and referees during and after games. Competition can be lots of fun, and we should enjoy the journey, no matter what the end results may be. It is a little different story in our spiritual life, however. There is only one final result that is acceptable. John 6:40… For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and Believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. 47…

You are either in Heaven or out, there is no in between or seconds. 2 Peter 2:1… But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord who bought them---bringing swift destruction on themselves. Many will follow their shameful ways and will bring the way of truth into disrepute. In their greed these teachers will exploit you with stories they have made up. Their condemnation has long been hanging over them, and their destruction has not been sleeping. For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, (Devil and some), but sent them to hell, putting them into gloomy dungeons to be held for judgment; if he did not spare the ancient world when he brought the flood on its ungodly people, but protected Noah, a preacher of righteousness, and seven others; if he condemned the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah by burning them to ashes, and made them an example of what is going to happen to the ungodly; etc. I think you get the picture! In our simple little world we are living in, we need to plan and be prepared for our fun and games to come to an end. Sometimes way more quickly then we anticipated – like those movie enthusiasts in Denver, who went to see the new “Batman”. It appears that one of the Devils henchmen went out that night just to take the lives of so many innocent people. I hope those people knew 11:25..Jesus said to her, resurrection and the life. He in me will live, even though whoever lives and believes in die.

The one word that can change your life “No” has become a knee-jerk reaction to every request and opportunity. “No, sorry. My schedule is full. Maybe later. That just doesn’t work for me. No, thank you.” The problem is: no won’t get you a raise. No won’t get you the body or health you desire. And no won’t get you new friends or rekindle your marriage. No sucks the life from your life. Excitement? Adventure? New challenges and opportunities? Poof! Gone in an instant with just one word. Do you want to bring some oomph into your life, live with excitement and make more money? Just say “yes.” Say yes to things you don’t want to do. Say yes to things that scare you. Say yes to things that seem impossible. It’s simple: just say yes. But saying yes is controversial. Time management experts will cringe when I suggest that you say yes more often. In fact, I was one of those time management experts! In my most recent book, “The Other 8 Hours: Maximize Your Free Time to Create New Wealth & Purpose,” I encouraged readers to say no. The problem is that they listened too well. Saying no is now a habit, even when we are given great opportunities. No is easy. No requires zero risk. No gives you a sense of peace. But no will not give you the life or career you want. Here are five reasons why yes may just save your life: 1. Yes opens doors. Yes paves the road to experiences. Sure, some of these experiences may not turn out well, but if you say yes often enough, you can’t help but stumble on life-changing opportunities that you never would have experienced or fathomed if you had said no. 2. Yes puts you at risk. Yes means you have to do something, and when you take action, you are putting yourself at risk. What if you don’t do it well? What if something bad happens? What if you

regret it? These are common concerns, but they miss the point. The goal is to design your life where you experience and challenge yourself, not to design a life that provides the greatest comfort and security. No keeps you on the couch and sheltered from the joy of living. Yes gets you out there. Doing. Experiencing. Learning. Failing. Living. 3. Yes gives you responsibility. Yes is a commitment and a promise. Yes is your word that you will take action. In too many companies, there is a fear of stepping up and taking on responsibility. The less you are responsible for, the less chance you will be blamed. In the short-term, this is undoubtedly true. Take on a project that doesn’t succeed, and this puts you at risk. But this is phantom risk. The real risk is dodging responsibility. The less your colleagues want to step up and tackle the impossible, the more opportunity you have to get noticed and get results. How can you rise in your company? Say yes to what everyone else refuses to do. 4. Yes provides momentum. No keeps you stuck. Yes gets you moving. Granted, you may spin your wheels doing things that don’t ultimately work out, or you may feel that you are wasting time on activities that aren’t leading you anywhere, but action begets more action. The more you do, the more you will want to do. Yes provides the impetus to start the action. 5. Yes is the antidote to regret. You will always regret the things you didn’t do more than the things you did do. Saying yes takes courage and is the solution from living a life of would haves, could haves and should haves. Over the next week, say yes to everything (legal and ethical that is!). If your boss asks you to tackle a new project? Yes, ma’am. If a neighbor needs your help? You bet. If your daughter wants to go on a bike ride. Of course. Nothing amazing was every accomplished from saying no. Be bold and start saying yes.

Flexxifinger™ is the choice of mechanized farmers worldwide On a hot, harvest day in 1998, Dave Dietrich discovered that long, rigid, metal lifters did not work in short, brittle, pulse crops. More lentils were going on the ground than into his combine. He needed to get those lifters off his header and was frustrated with the length of time it took to remove them since they were bolted on from underneath the header. The success of the Pulse Crop Lifter in recovering lentils, peas and edible beans convinced farmers and Dietrich that this technology would be equally effective in salvaging cereal crops that had been flattened by heavy rain, strong winds, hail or insect damage and heavy crops like canola which needed a lifter with additional strength to hold the crop above the cutting knife. Hillsboro Series 3000 Aluminum Truck Bed Hillsboro continues to expand the aluminum product line with the addition of the Series 3000 Aluminum Truck Bed. This new aluminum truck bed has a durable adjustable height bulkhead with 1-1/2” square tube louvers and full height side support gussets. The standard features also include 6” tall fold down side rails with slam latches. The bed comes with a pre-mounted gooseneck hitch with a 2-5/16” ball and a flush-mount lid. The adjustable width long sills allow the bed to be fitted to multiple frame widths. The Series 3000 also comes standard with a 2” receiver hitch. Watering Suggestions for DroughtStressed Trees from Extension Specialist Dry spring and hot, dry summer conditions are leading to severe stress for many trees and shrubs, according to John Ball, SDSU Extension Forester and Forest Health Specialist for the South Dakota Department of Agriculture. “The most common symptom of moisture stress is leaves turning a lighter green than is typical for the species. Affected leaves are also showing brown and crisp margins, with browning often occurring between the leaf veins,” Ball said. “Some trees are already having leaves curl and fall, a symptom of severe stress. Eventually trees showing severe moisture stress will begin to die back.” In current drought conditions, evergreen foliage on drought-stressed trees, particularly seedlings, is turning yellow to almost purple at the tips of the needles. Some of the older needles, which were formed three to five years ago, on drought-stressed trees are beginning to drop prematurely. “There is not much that can be done at this time other than water,” Ball said. “This is particularly important for new plantings, whether they are seedlings in a new windbreak or a tree just planted in a yard.” He says a seedling is going to need between a pint and a quart of water per

day, while a newly planted tree will need about 2 to 3 gallons per day at this time. “Most young tree belts are probably not receiving anywhere close to this amount and I suspect there will be a lot of replanting next spring,” he said. Ball says established trees will not need daily watering, but still require weekly watering to survive this dry, hot summer. A 2-inch diameter tree, as measured at 6-inches above the ground, should be receiving about 20 gallons of water a week.

Here are some tips to help you sort through green marketing: • Look for specific (ex. “contains 75% post-consumer recycled materials”) rather than vague statements about environmental impact. • Determine whether the green marketing claims apply to the packaging, the product, or both. • Beware of fake third-party certification. Low Emission JCB ECOMAX Engines Drive AGRI LOADALL Development The latest generation of Loadall telehandlers for the agricultural market benefit from JCB’s high torque, low emission Ecomax diesel engines along with a host of detailed technological developments, each contributing to more efficient use, easier operation, lower running costs and ultimately, greater productivity. Developed to meet the US Tier 4 Interim emissions standards, the JCB Ecomax engine has no requirement for costly diesel particulate filters (DPF) or for exhaust after treatment fluids, resulting in low cost, efficient operation for customers. More than simply an engine upgrade, revisions to the Loadall line-up include: • JCB Ecomax engines with up to 15% more torque and reduced fuel consumption • High back-off brakes, contributing a 2% efficiency gain • Button-style gear selection on servo joystick • Transmission dump integrated into brake pedal • Variable speed cooling fan, reducing noise and fuel use • New aggressive styling with revised engine hood and pod • Modern cab environment for reduced fatigue and enhanced ease of use “JCB has looked at every aspect of Loadall performance, from the engines to transmissions and hydraulics. We have completed more than 110,000 hours of testing and invested more than $124 million to deliver the most efficient range of engines for our customers, each designed specifically to work with our agricultural machinery,” said Tim Burnhope, Chief Innovation and Growth Officer.

Clean Efficient Power With Reduced Fuel Consumption JCB’s Ecomax diesel engines incorporate an advanced combustion system (patent pending) that manages emissions within the engine, rather than having to rely on expensive after treatment or a DPF. Through the use of cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR), a high pressure common rail injection system using up to 29,000 PSI injection pressures and a variable geometry turbocharger, JCB Power Systems has been able to meet the emissions standards while developing additional power

and torque, yet using less fuel. There are three engine ratings available to agricultural Loadall customers. A 108hp (81kW) engine is standard equipment in the Agri Loadall and in the 526-56. This engine offers 15% more torque and 10% more power than the previous engine, delivering increased performance for the customer. The Agri Plus comes as standard with the 125hp (93kW) engine and although it offers slightly less outright power, the 125hp (93kW) engine delivers 3% more usable torque across its operating range than the previous 130hp (97kW) engine that it replaces. The 145hp (108kW) engine is now a standard fitment in the Agri Xtra and the 550-80 Agri Plus. Similarly, though the range-topping 145hp (108kW) engine offers the same power rating as the previous Tier 3 engine, it delivers 3% more torque and provides up to 5% more useable power in the main operating range. All models deliver average fuel savings of up to 5% compared to the previous machines, resulting in substantial cost savings throughout the ownership period.

Drivetrain Improvements Boost Productivity In the Agri Plus and Agri Xtra mid-range Loadall models, transmission gear shift selection has now been placed within the head of the main loader control lever, eliminating the need for a twist-grip gear change lever on the steering column while forward and direction control can be operated from either the main loader control lever or the column lever (dependent on model). This removes the need for the operator to take their hand off the loader control lever during operation, maximizing productivity and comfort. In addition, on the Agri Xtra model JCB has removed the various transmission operating modes, providing operators with a simple choice of auto or manual gear changing modes. With the transmission controls in the lever head, the optional transmission dump function is moved to the brake pedal. This allows full engine power to be applied to the hydraulic system, without the transmission driving against the brake system, reducing wear and cutting fuel consumption, ideal when

undertaking bulk materials handling applications such loading feed wagons. In addition high back-off brakes, which literally pull the brake pads away from the disc to prevent drag, are now standard on all models. They contribute a 2% efficiency gain to the driveline. This is further improved by reduced transmission oil levels, cutting churning losses and drag within the transmission. This reduction in drag contributes a further 1% efficiency gain.

Bold Exterior Design Preserves JCB Visibility And Serviceability The revised engine hood and pod now direct cooling air from the top of the front, through the cooling pack and around the engine, to exit at the top of the rear of the hood. This prevents cooling air disturbing dust and debris on the ground below the engine, prolonging air filter life and reducing dust on site for the operator. However, despite the aggressive new look, complete with updated JCB color scheme, the designers have not had to sacrifice JCB’s legendary visibility across the engine. As there is no bulky DPF or exhaust after treatment to accommodate beneath the engine hood there has also been no requirement to extend the wheelbase or chassis length of the Loadall, as with some competitors, so the machines also maintain their respected maneuverability and tight turning circles.

Improved Cab Environment For Operators In the cab, the Loadalls feature a completely new instrument cluster and dash layout, with a high resolution LCD monitor. The front dash installation has been restyled for a clearer layout and the cab heating and ventilation system now features a seven-speed fan, providing greater control for the operator. The top half of the cab door now comes with a revised slam latch mechanism and door ajar facility to ensure that the window stays open if required. “With the latest generation of agricultural Loadalls, JCB has once again moved the telescopic handler market forwards a giant step,” says Mr Burnhope. “This advanced range, with clean, efficient JCB Ecomax engines, will ensure that JCB remains the world’s number one telescopic handler manufacturer.”
