Russell Sonnenberg is the artist behind The Yesteryear Collection, a series of 50 tractor prints. His works have been very popular with tractor enthusiasts. What fascinates these collectors about Russell Sonnenberg art is his brilliant ability to capture the essence of nostalgia and bring it back to the viewers’ memory in vivid detail. “Oh I remember,” is a common phrase that people often use when admiring one of his pictures. Russell grew up in Kossuth County in Iowa about 26 miles northeast of Algona. He had been quoted as saying, “I grew up in the horse and buggy days.” He began painting as a child mainly due his Mother’s encouragement. Of course, his life on the farm heavily influenced his work a lot. In his younger days, he worked as a tractor mechanic at an Allis Chalmer dealership. His fascination with Allis Chalmers is evident in the number of paintings he has done of that specific brand. Over the past 42 years, he had painted various nostalgic country and farm scenes. At the suggestion of his lifelong wife Audrey, “paint what you know” he returned to painting tractors. Russell enjoys feeling close to nature and purposely puts a bur oak in the left side of his paintings. He has always felt that tree had its own character and enjoys using it as a trademark that makes his work distinguishable from all other artists. Russell never entered art competitions or painted for fame, as so many other modern day artists. He just wanted to paint something that would touch the hearts of tractor collectors and people who have those nostalgic fond memories of the farm life. People love to reflect back on the simpler times of the forties and fifties. With this in mind, and a great deal of research, Russell goes to work on each painting treating it as his newest masterpiece.

A great deal of research goes into each painting to make sure that it is historically accurate. In order to pay very close attention to the mechanical detail of the various tractor models, he uses his camera to take photographs. Russell said, “I take a picture of this part and then that part, plus I make sure that I take the pictures at the angle I want so I can use them for reference. Also, I like to take photos at 2:00 in the afternoon because then the shadows aren’t weird and the sun isn’t as harsh as it is at noon. I also like to have owner’s manuals (as a reference).” Each painting requires about 150 hours of painting time, plus about 100 hours of research. He says each time he has timed himself, it comes up to be about the same for each painting. Russell has painted many different models trying to make sure that nobody gets left out. Many artists will focus on John Deere and International. Russell paints models of Allis Chalmers, Minneapolis Moline, Ford, Oliver, Massey-Harris, and Case to round out the strong blend of collectible tractors. Russell paints for the sheer enjoyment of the craft usually during the long winter months in the basement of his home in Forest City, Iowa. He does not paint in the summer as he is usually too busy with other activities. Each of his paintings has a unique story to tell. He will be releasing four new prints this summer. The stars of his paintings are, of course, the tractors. The County Fair Is Still the Biggest Show On Earth For farmers and ranchers, the county fair is the biggest show on earth. Nearly 3,000 fairs occupy more than a quarter million acres every year. Maybe the county fair in your county has shrunk in size, but when combined with others across the country, it’s still quite a show.
Over the years 4-H has come to dominate most activities at the county fair. Without a doubt, this has been the biggest win and greatest achievement of the history of the county fair. It has provided a platform for which the youth of America can still compete and learn from both their achievements and mistakes.
No other industrialized country compares, and no industry is even close to being showcased like that of agriculture. With 4-H being the centerpiece, it embodies the spirit of farming and ranching like none other. Having participated in most of the major livestock shows around the country as either a judge or coach, I can assure you that nothing makes the adrenaline pump like that of competing with your peers at the county level; those that you grew up with, listening to folk-lore of the one that would-a, could-a, should-a won. This is unlike that of the professionals, where strangers meet and compete for perhaps the first time. Here there is that element of money and prestige that flows like honey — a reminder of the county fair in the home economics exhibit building. But under the big top it seems more tarnished and tainted; like that of a “mutual admiration society”. The animal often becomes nothing more then that of a prop for a Stetson and Lizards. There isn’t a Thanksgiving that goes by that I don’t think about the International Livestock Exposition in Chicago. It became tradition for several years to travel the first icy, wintry roads of the season, only to be disappointed with a livestock show so totally out of character for the dirty, windy city. Take this boy back to the country—only to be off to the Fort Worth and Denver stock shows. Then it was on to the American Royal in Kansas City, the home of my ancestors and a taste of limited success. The most unusual of all the shows was the Paci c International in Portland, where flight connections found me paired with a chartered plane of undertakers headed to a funeral directors convention. Thoughts of frightening headline images were racing through my mind: “NinetyNine Undertakers And One Bull Shipper Aboard”.
The one show of big-time caliber that brought me back home and closer to my roots of the county fair was the North Dakota Winter Show. With visions of grandeur, the headline could have read: “Grand Champion Steer Owned By North Dakota State University And Judged By Ex-Student Of North Dakota State University”. There were such innuendos done in jest; much like that of neighborly county fair jocosity. Yes, the atmosphere between the big shows and the county fairs was quite different. Where there were congenial acquaintances and the fun filled spirit of competition, there was now more emphasis and pressure of fame and name. Where it was once the biggest neighborly event of the year, the big shows took competition to the level of corporate power brokers — where winning at any cost is the price of success! There is probably a place for both — but for me, give me the county fair where I can still wake up to the crowing of a rooster down at the poultry barn, walk down to the 4-H food booth for breakfast, and help catch a runaway calf after being sprayed with cold water for the first time. All the time, knowing everyone I met along the way. How could you not like your neighbor, as you strolled down the midway holding your sweethearts hand, and feeling the magic of the lights, music and festivities?
4-H was built on the spirit of competitiveness, for which the county fair has been its greatest contributor. It is on this very principle that 4-H and county fairs can point with pride to an unending parade of champions. And, perhaps, even more importantly — the stepping-stone for moving onto the national scene. But before making that big step, realizing that the real champions are those kids hanging on to the end of those lead ropes, knowing that the way to the winners circle comes by the way of experience. I can assure you that I speak from experience when I express the accolades of 4-H and association with county fairs. It is with the greatest sense of humility that I credit them both with any and all of the successes I’ve enjoyed in life. Though I’ve known my share of failure, it is the experience of those days that gave me direction in life, became the foundation of my vocation, and taught me to always be competitive and to strive to be the best, and to win without always being the winner. May 4-H continue to grow and strengthen the county fairs in the tradition for which it has lasted all these years. The 4-H (Head-Heart-HandsHealth) organization began in rural America in the early 1900’s, about the same time as many of the county fairs began. This was done in conjunction with congress to have youngsters learn about agriculture, forestry, conservation and home economics by participating in these various activities. All have benefited from the association of 4-H and county fairs, but none more then that of livestock. Today, most county fairs have become primarily 4-H livestock shows, for which all of 4-H has benefited from the positive development of individual lives. Leadership and livestock have become the primary benefactors of the biggest show on earth.

No matter the conditions, at the end of the day you knew you’d had fun. I would lie on my bed in the upstairs bedroom looking down that road to the bright ashing lights of the carnival. Seldom, did I get to stay on the grounds until they pulled the plug on the ferris wheel. That was always the last light I could see from my bedroom window.
◆ Irma Harding brings new life to food preservation in her very own recipe book. In 1947, International Harvester developed refrigerator and freezer lines and created Irma Harding as the character spokeswoman. Irma promoted the products to U.S. farm women. International Harvester hired five home economists to answer inquiries and conduct cooking experiments in company kitchens on Irma’s behalf. In addition, 70 home economists and saleswomen were hired throughout the U.S. to travel regionally and educate homemakers of the day about freezing and preserving food.
Like always there were winners and losers, but seldom disappointment in the experience. It meant a few horse trades for those that hadn’t quite gured out how to have their horse broke before competing, settling for a red or a white, when blue was long overdue. And heading back down that road which was now a whole lot more bumpy and full of chuckholes. The new horse didn’t know his way home. If home is where his heart is, he must have been totally confused and bewildered about those same issues that seem to challenge those of us who occasionally still get on the wrong road. Because of my family’s involvement in the Burke County Fair, that road was literally traveled from sun up to sundown for days on end before, during and after the fair — and, guratively, for as many as there were days. The road most traveled is often the least appreciated or cared for, but travels a storied life for which lives are changed forever.
With a persona that is deeply rooted in America’s rural history, the products Irma now represents invoke memories of all that was and still is good in American households and homemaking.
So it was written: Exodus 3:18 (Like that of the county fair) “then they will heed your voice; and you shall come for three days down that road (journey) to the fair (into the wilderness)”.

We’ve had the pleasure of working with farmers – mostly livestock producers – for many years and we recently began to notice something interesting: Farmers like to ask a lot of questions. They want to know about which things are best for their operation, what’s new out there, how different brands compare, how they can save money on input costs, and so on. And they appreciate

Without a constant exchange of fresh air, the animals are breathing in dust particles and, with them, any bacteria or virus lucky enough to hitch a ride. That puts stress on the respiratory system and weakens the ability to fight off disease. Dust is not the only culprit, though. In even the most beautiful equine stable, for instance, ammonia gasses can accumulate to unhealthy levels very quickly. In a hog barn, if you lose your ventilation, even for as little as a half hour, pigs can die. Not from a build-up of toxic gasses as you might imagine, but from hyperthermia. Their bodies put off so much heat that, without constant air movement, they can quickly succumb to heat stress. Last time, we talked about Hedgewood’s Five Key Elements for livestock production. Air quality is a perfect example of how one element – Environment – impacts all the others to one extent or another.

This heir is thinking ‘I can buy this, and buy that, and have this, and I can’t have all those things unless I get the whole four hundred thousand’. That’s true, but ten years from now, my

Stress Leads to Brain and Genetic Changes A small but growing body of research literature indicates that stress can produce changes not only in brain functioning, but also in genetic proclivities passed along to future generations. These scientific findings hold important implications for our physical and behavioral health, and that of our descendants. A process called methylation changes the expression of DNA. Chemical structures called methyl enzymes increase in response to stressful events and can silence genes from working properly. Evidence suggests early life stresses may have more impact on heritability than later life stresses. DNA, which is the abbreviation for deoxyribonucleic acid, is the hereditary material in humans and nearly all organisms. The findings are in the early stages of reaching conclusive scientific certainty. Duke University biochemists Dr. Robert Lefkowitz and Makoto Hara demonstrated that increasing amounts of stress can progressively damage DNA expression and increase the risk for developing cancer and turning hair gray. In a December 27, 2013 article for the website, www.ClearYourStress.com, Karl McDonald cited additional evidence that chronic stress is the culprit, causing psychological and physiological distress that triggers a drop in a key tumor suppression antigen, called p53. A more recent study was reported last month by the New York Association of Psychiatric Rehabilitation Services. The research was conducted by a team of scientists at Johns Hopkins University, led by Richard Lee, Ph.D. They found that high levels of corticosteroids, which are released into the blood by

severe stress, are associated with changes in brain functions which influence our behaviors, and changes in the DNA methylation of the human genome site, Fkbp5. In other words, stress can change brain chemistry and behavior, and the genetic information passed along to offspring. Corticosteroid levels are a good indication of exposure to stress: the higher the cortisol, the greater the stress. It is not fully known how DNA changes, even though the research about methylation offers promising direction. It is clear that almost all organic life forms have adaptive capacities and that these capacities can contribute to survival or extinction.
We need to know what steps to take to reduce exposures to environmental toxins. We can improve our knowledge about beneficial methods of reducing the body chemicals associated with fright and stress— adrenalin and cortisol.
Humans are one of the most complex life forms. We have accrued enormous adaptations over time.
Okay, I know this article is pretty technical, but it is foundational to knowing why I try to make behavioral health more understandable to those who engage in the wonderfully life-enhancing activities of growing food and fiber, some of our most basic necessities for life.
All of us are subjected to stress. Adaptations to stress that contribute to survival can become part of our heritable genetic material, as well as adaptations that detract from survival over multiple generations.

For example, habitual heavy alcohol ingestion, which is toxic, not only creates a craving for more of the substance and eventually dulls brain functions, but it also increases the likelihood that offspring of the alcohol abuser will develop alcohol addiction. While exposures to environmental toxins are widely suspected as an increasing cause of death, the new information accumulating about stress opens a further area for scientific exploration: how stress changes brain chemistry and our genetic material. A new field, behavioral epigenetics, examines how our experiences affect our genetic expression.

If we didn’t have the capacity to incorporate beneficial DNA changes that contribute to survival, humans would have disappeared as a species long ago. Since stress is a normal part of life, and we can adapt, why worry about managing stress? The answer is that chronic stress and severe acute stress, such as a nonfatal but life-threatening event, lessen our capacity to survive. Dr. Rosmann developed the first mental health response in Iowa to the Farm Crisis of the 1980s. In 2001, Dr. Rosmann, along with partners in seven states, founded the nonprofit network, AgriWellness Inc. AgriWellness conducted research and provided counseling services to farm people. It became clearer that a specialized field – agricultural behavioral health – was needed to respond to the unique problems experienced by farmers, ranchers and others involved in agriculture.

CUCUMBER CHIPS
In some garden centers there are these little gadgets called ‘sticky traps’. They are specific to certain kinds of bug that feed on fruit trees and certain garden plants, especially the blossoms.
If the cucumber patch is producing overtime and you want to preserve them without pickling, try drying them. Just slice the cucumbers and dry the slices in your dehydrator at a fairly low temperature, about 110 – 118º until nice and crisp. They make a good snack for the kids and don’t need any additional salt as the natural salt in the vegetable comes out in the drying process. –Submitted by AC, WY
A reader wrote to cut some yellow plastic into strips, coat them with plain petroleum jelly and then hang the strips in the fruit trees to attract the critters. I was pretty skeptical so I cut some strips from an old yellow oil jug, spread on the petroleum jelly and hung them from the branches with some pieces of twine I ran through holes punched in one end. It worked! There is some kind of moth that lays eggs on the developing fruit and the worms eat holes in the apples. Not any more–those yellow chunks of plastic work wonders and are almost free. ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

WEED FREE GARDEN PATHS If you lay down a few sheets of thick cardboard where your garden paths need to be and then cover that with some old hay or compost, the weeds can’t grow through the cardboard and the paths are fairly weed-free all summer. Sometimes it takes a couple of years for the cardboard to completely decompose back into the soil. –Submitted by MN, WY (Pennywise says: I have used old newspapers with pretty good success IF I put a good layer of straw over the top of the paper and soak it down real well several times, and the wind does NOT blow 60 mph). ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
TOMATO STAKES I use old dead branches off of my trees for my tomato stakes/ cages. I just push the big end of the branches into the soil around the tomato plants and then tie around them with some narrow strips of polyester fabric. Some of it I’ve used for several years and it seems to be in pretty good shape yet! I will put one or two stakes by each plant and then add more if needed. I don’t see much sense in buying something when I already have something FREE that works just as well (it may not look quite as good as those fancy metal cages, but free is good!) –Submitted by AS, OR

HANDY SCRUBBER To make a steel wool scrubber for woodworking or metal sanding, stuff some steel wool in a chunk of old radiator hose or something on that order. The rubber keeps your hands from getting beat up and the steel wool can do its work. To replace it, just poke a drill bit or a piece of doweling in the end of the hose to clear out the old piece and then insert a new wad. –Submitted by MB, VA ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
FIX A CRACK To seal a crack in a terra cotta planter/pot or even an old vase so you can use it to hold fresh flowers, simply melt some plain paraffin wax (found in the canning section of the supermarket) and paint it over the crack. I usually put on a few good coats so it stays a while. Let it get dry and then go ahead and use the container. OIL DRIBBLE CATCHER If you have a vehicle with a small oil leak and don’t want a mess on the garage floor, just line a flat cardboard box with some aluminum foil, put in some cheap cat litter and slid the box under the drip for overnight or until you can get the leak stopped. –Submitted by JT, NE (Pennywise says: If you already have some spots on the cement, try covering them with a thick layer of cornmeal and leave it sit for several days. EMERGENCY HAND CLEANER If you don’t have any hand cleaner in the shop, try using some shaving cream–the cheapest kind you can buy. After all, it’s soap and since it’s in an aerosol can, you can just use a little bit and get your hands nice and clean. If you have a really greasy job to tend to, try rubbing a little bit on your hands BEFORE you begin the work. Cutting Cooling Costs The full brunt of summer is once more upon us. Out here in the ‘hinterlands’ where I live, the heat in the Badlands is scorching for days on end. There aren’t many places to escape from the heat so the cattle seek the coolness of the cedar breaks and creeks whenever possible along with the other wild critters such as deer, turkeys, rabbits, etc. The old timer’s used to call it ‘shading up’ during the heat of the day and then every moving thing comes out towards evening to feed, munching on gardens and yards if possible! For us humans, it’s a different story. Thankfully, we have many advantages over those who homesteaded here in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. No electricity, running water, insulated houses, etc. As a child I lived in a home with no air conditioning–not even a fan for many years and we learned how to cope. Work was done early in the mornings and late in the afternoons when it cooled down some. We had a basement and the kids in the family plus a lot of neighbor kids spent the hot afternoons resting on old blankets on the cool cement floor. Some took naps, some read or played a game and when it cooled off outside, we went back to work mowing weeds, working in gardens and flowerbeds. Some did their house painting or other repairs early and late. It was called ‘adjusting’. We’ve gotten so spoiled over the last 40 years or so with all of the ‘doodads’ and gadgets that we all take pretty much for granted. Running water in the house along with the indoor plumbing, air conditioning, big box fans, instant hot water, electric stoves and microwaves, automatic washers and dryers, computers, ‘smart’ cell phones, iPads, GPS in the vehicles–luxuries not to be thought of just a little over 100 years ago. My biggest concern is that all of this is going to come to a screeching halt when the electric bills go through the roof, become impossible to keep paid up. Folks won’t really know how to cope; conservation will be the ‘name of the game’. The production of cool air for our homes takes a good chunk of the yearly utility bill, and for some, cooling costs more than heating for the winter so it only makes ‘cents’ to get the maximum use from every bit of energy we use. One can save a good bit of money by taking advantage of natural cooling in the evenings by opening windows and doors, shutting things up before bedtime and then pulling shades or draperies early in the morning to keep the cool air in and the heat out as long as possible. If you have air conditioning, clean or replace the filters as recommended. Sometimes, you can wash the big filters really well with a garden hose and get another year’s use from each filter. If you have a window unit or are planning to purchase one, try to situate it on the north side of the house so it doesn’t have to work so hard. It is recommended that you only set the thermostat to just 20 degrees cooler than the outside temperature, and then use a box fan to move the air around the rooms. We have an attic fan and it really helps keep the hot air out of the upper part of the house. It comes on at 98 degrees and keeps that super-heated air out of the attic. We’ve also installed ceiling fans in the bedrooms to move the cooler air around during the night. To save even more money, I do my laundry at night. The electric rates are usually cheaper during the ‘off hours’ when the peak demand is not so severe. I hang my clothes out at night and they are always dry by early morning (and I avoid the bird droppings because the birds are sleeping at night and don’t ‘bomb’ the clothes if I get out early enough!) Teach the children to turn off the lights when they leave a room or even install timers on closet switches, storage shed and garage lights to save a few dollars. It does add up over time and the savings you have achieved at the end of the summer will more than surprise you. Cutting your energy bills isn’t all that difficult if a bit of common sense is used. If the kids don’t do their part, you can do what one subscriber did: Her son was continually leaving lights on, doors open with the air conditioner running so she made him pay the light bill for just one month from his summer’s wages. It took most of the paycheck to pay just one light bill and she said, “Once was enough. He has become the king of energy savings!” I say, whatever works! Until next month,

Why Washing Dishes is a Blessing After each meal in our home the Bible is read, and then everyone gets busy cleaning up the dishes. It doesn’t take long before the dishwasher is full, I always say, “If no one wants to wash the remaining dishes, please allow me,” and the response is always, “No one is standing in your way!” What they don’t realize yet is washing dishes is truly a blessing. In my case, it means that Mrs. V. Heddy Ake has not come to visit that day. She won’t tell me what the ‘V’ stands for, but I am sure it is ‘vicious’. When one is healthy, cleaning the kitchen seems burdensome. But to an bedridden invalid, it would be a blessing to be able to wash dishes. Washing dishes also means I probably have the luxury of time. My day is not so filled with other tasks or places to go that I can spend the time it takes to wash dishes. When there are lots of dirty dishes, it meant everyone was home for dinner. (What is not to like about spending time with your family?) And because we were able to prepare a meal and sit down and eat it indicates there were no major calamities facing us at that time. We have known days of serious affliction, and know assuredly, that someday trouble will assail us again. But for this day our world has a steadiness to it. Alice Morse Earle penned these words: “Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, today is a gift, that’s why it’s called the present.” Those are good words to remember. Cooking and cleaning are routine responsibilities, often thought of as mundane. We might dream of the great things we could do if we weren’t spending our time with a mop bucket and cleaning rags. (But isn’t the most important work we do is taking care of our family?) Things can get out of whack in a hurry if we don’t perform day-to-day chores. When the laundry doesn’t get done, it’s panic time when there are no clean towels or (gasp) underwear… We too often forget clean laundry is a blessing. Life situations can change in the twinkle of an eye. Maybe that’s why Sunday comes once a week, or the sun rises each morning, and sets each day, just as a reminder to thank God for the blessings he has bestowed upon us. What if we woke up tomorrow morning with only the blessings we had thanked God for yesterday? There is something about gratitude that makes us enjoy the simple pleasures of life. “So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts until wisdom.” Psalm 90:12. Renae B. CHAOS is a term I learned at the clutter control website: www.flylady.net from Marla Cilley who is also the author of a book called Sink Reflections (Bantam, 2007). I don’t rave about many websites. The FlyLady’s website is different. It is full of house cleaning and organizing tips. And, it is humorous and motivational. I especially enjoy the free cheerful daily e-mail reminders that you can sign up for to motivate you and to help you stay on track. The FlyLady takes you through every step of the way, every day, as you form many new small habits to clean and organize your home. She calls them baby steps. I would also like to suggest that CHAOS comes in two forms—real and perceived. Real CHAOS is physical. It is the kind you trip over or see stacked up in piles on every available surface. FlyLady’s website can help with that. Perceived CHAOS, though, is a mental state that comes from living in modern America. I worry about perceived CHAOS. “We can’t have anyone over until the new furniture comes.” “I’ll invite you over after we get the deck built.” “We’ll try to get together later this summer after we get the landscaping whipped into shape.” “My house has exploded. I can’t have you over until I put it back together.” I have heard comments like this from many people. Here are other comments that may not be said out loud but contribute to this perceived CHAOS: “If I buy this, my house will be more acceptable.” “I need to run to the mall and get this before our company comes over this weekend.” “I’ll get the house cleaned and then it will be okay if they come over.” If you think about it, isn’t that sad? I think less entertaining happens now than twenty years ago because of this perception, this perceived CHAOS. Do you really care if someone’s house is perfect when you are invited over, or, are you just happy to get the invitation? I am really more comfortable with people in homes that aren’t perfect but, instead, the people are relaxed about their home and just happy to see me. Since they are relaxed and their house is relaxed, I can be relaxed there too.
When I invite people over, I am asking them to come spend time with me. I am not asking them to take a bath in my not-perfectly-scrubbed-out bathtub or to look for dust bunnies under my furniture. Yet, many of us hesitate to get together with each other if things aren’t “perfect.”
By the way, the “Fly” in “FlyLady” stands for “Finally Loving Yourself,” a term coined by one of her appreciative fans. Maybe that is what it really is about: We can learn to love ourselves enough to trust that others will too, whether our home is “perfect” or not. Do you still want less clutter in your home? If so, there is another way to let someone in without it being a guest. Try finding the right friend and asking them to be a clutter buddy. What is a clutter buddy? It is swapping clutter help with another person. I am inspired by a great experience I heard about from two people who tried it. Swapping clutter help is less expensive than hiring a professional organizer and, possibly, more fun! “Let’s start at your house first,” No, that’s okay, let’s start at your place.” After getting over a little initial fear and embarrassment, the clutter buddies I spoke to reported that working with a partner to get rid of clutter made the job a lot more fun. Because someone was with them, it was easier to get and maintain a sense of humor throughout the clutter clearing tasks. The clutter buddies also said there really weren’t any rules. They dealt with everything from moving furniture, flipping mattresses, sorting papers, and weeding out junk mail and magazines. They didn’t perform exactly the same tasks at each other’s home, but they made a similar time commitment to each home. The clutter buddies found that working with someone kept them on task for a longer time than a person can usually sort clutter on his/her own. Does anyone else besides me get tired, stiff, and lonely after a couple of hours hunched over paper piles on the floor? Getting help from a buddy also eliminated guilt. This wasn’t wasting someone else’s time. It was an even exchange of time and effort. The clutter buddies reported it was easier to work on someone else’s clutter rather than their own. They didn’t have an emotional investment in each other’s stuff, so they were able to help each other objectively. What a gift! The clutter buddies also made it fun. They took breaks and rewarded themselves. At one home, they shared homemade soup, and at another, they went out to eat before coming back to finish up. All in all, they spent over twelve hours at each home. Two people working for twelve hours is twenty-four hours of clutter control. That is a lot longer than my usual hour or two at home alone. The clutter buddies got a lot done! You can try a two-pronged approach to your household clutter: Change your perception about having people come to your home, and consider getting help from a clutter buddy!
Maybe we just need to get over it. Isn’t it more important to stay connected with people rather than to entertain in a perfect home? Practice. Try inviting someone over and not cleaning your house. Try it again a week later with another friend…and again…. You get the idea.

Discover Your Passion, Grow Your Potential, Impact Your Future As I mentioned in my last column, I am interning at NEW Cooperative in Fort Dodge, Iowa for the summer. I officially started my internship on May 7, 2014. I am the communications intern and will be working in a variety of areas within the company. NEW Cooperative is a member owned cooperative with 22 locations throughout the state of Iowa. NEW Cooperative focuses on grain marketing and storage, feed, fertilizer, crop protection and seed resources. NEW Cooperative employs about 400 employees while remaining farmer focused and member driven. NEW Cooperative offers different internship areas such as agronomy, operations, communications and information technology. This summer there is 14 interns, however, this number continues to grow every summer. I plan on completing a series of columns regarding this internship throughout the summer to give the readers a “look into” an internship. Iowa State University’s College of Agriculture Career Services strongly suggests students participate in internships to improve several different areas. These areas might include networking and soft skills. Most internships range from 10-12 weeks and are normally 40-hour weeks depending on the internship type and company. My internship will be 12 weeks with 40 hours per week. I will also be receiving 6 college credits through a class at Iowa State called Agricultural Education 412. To receive 6 credits I have to complete 12 weeks/40 hours per week. Additionally, I have to journal weekly and complete a series of assignments to create a portfolio to showcase different competencies I improved over the summer. I will focus on my teamwork, initiative taking, communication, leadership, problem solving, decision-making, creativity, critical thinking, and active listening skills. My communications internship is located out of Fort Dodge, Iowa, which is NEW Cooperative’s headquarters. My main project for the summer will be creating a recruitment video that will feature NEW Cooperative’s internship program. This video will be used at career fairs and on the company website. A NEW Cooperative overview video is also planned for the summer. I get to help my supervisor with company golf outings that are held in July at 3 different golf courses. I will also be taking a lot of pictures for use in newsletters, website, social media, and power points. Other duties include: newsletters, marketing and promotion items, county fair activities, social media, and annual meeting planning. I am excited to get into the full swing of things at NEW Cooperative. I hope to learn a lot this summer in several areas. Look for my next column on how my internship is going and what I have completed so far! Kayla Degner was born and raised in rural Lytton, IA on a diversified grain and livestock family farm. She graduated from Rockwell City-Lytton in May 2012 and currently attends Iowa State University studying Agricultural Communications. Her past involved many agriculture venues. Horn Flies: Profit-Robbing Pests
Control tips for producers to take back lost gains When it comes to raising cattle, every pound counts. And, as every producer knows, there are always several factors that can steal dollars from the bottom line. In fact, one of the most economically devastating threats, especially for pastured cattle, measures only about the size of a pencil eraser — it’s the horn fly. “Even though horn flies are small pests, they can be a big problem,” said Roger Winter, DVM, Technical Services Veterinarian for AgriLabs. “According to the USDA, the detrimental impact of horn flies is more than $1 billion per year in the U.S., with up to $60 million dollars spent on insecticidal control. Financial loss can be attributed to reduction in weight gains, feed efficiency and milk yields as well as loss of blood and energy used trying to dislodge flies.”
Blood Loss Equals Lost Gains
Horn flies take anywhere from 25-38 blood meals per day and with large numbers feeding on one individual animal. This can result in a significant amount of blood loss each day. Unlike most other flies, horn flies remain on the host animals constantly and leave only for a brief period to lay eggs on very fresh manure. “Horn flies have a piercing-sucking mouth part that is similar to a mosquito but is more painful because it’s larger,” said Bob Pennington, MS, Consulting Veterinary Entomologist for SmartVet. “Hundreds of flies, each biting around 30 times a day, can result in up to one-third of a liter of blood lost per animal, per day. That’s a considerable amount of energy loss.” Numerous studies have been conducted to understand the economic impact of horn flies on cow and calf-weaning weights. Very conservative figures show that horn flies can result in one-tenth to one-third of a pound in reduction in weight gains per calf, per day. For example, in a 5-month period (150 days), that equals 15 to 50 pounds reduction in weaning weights. At approximately $1.60 per pound, a 30-pound weight reduction results in an average income loss of $48 per head due to horn flies. If a producer has 50 head of cattle, that equals $2,400 total income loss, and for 100 head it’s $4,800.
When to Treat
“Instead of feeding regularly, cows are fighting the awful bite from horn flies by switching their tails, throwing their heads, kicking and stomping to dislodge them,” said Pennington. “When doing this, they are not as efficient when it comes to grazing and meat and milk production.” Treatment and prevention are key to controlling horn flies. The best time for producers to justify taking horn fly control measures that will generate a positive return on investment is when the flies reach the economic threshold. On average, if more than 200 flies are observed on a single beef cow or stocker animal it is considered the “treatment threshold.” For a single calf or lactating dairy cow, it’s 50 flies. “Throughout the fly season, weekly monitoring for horn flies is highly recommended,” said Winter. “It’s usually best to monitor between the hours of 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. when horn flies are most visible on the shoulders and sides of cattle. On hotter days, the flies tend to migrate to the cow’s belly where it’s cooler and harder to observe.”
Fly Season Control Options
Horn fly infestations can vary greatly by region due to climate. In Northern areas, the season usually lasts anywhere from four to five months, whereas in Southern states, they can endure more than half a year of horn fly nuisance. For this reason, season-long control is typically recommended. A24

Pennington suggests these tips to consider when developing a herd fly-control program: • Withhold tagging or pour-on treatments until horn fly numbers reach about 100 per side of animal. This will keep them from being applied too early. It takes more than 200 flies per cow to have an economic impact on weight gain of nursing calves. • Remove insecticide ear tags in the fall. • Use of oral larvicide treatment such as Rabon™ or an Altosid® is a good way to reduce fly breeding in manure.
Lastly, the most important way to safeguard against horn flies becoming resistant to insecticide is to rotate different modes of action. There are many methods available to control horn flies such as insecticidal ear tags, dust bags, concentrated pour-ons, animal sprays, backrubbers and oral larvicides available in minerals and feed supplements. Horn flies are notorious for building resistance to some classes of chemicals, so producers should use an integrated program with multiple products for the best protection.
New, Unique Form of Horn Fly Control

It bursts upon impact, allowing the topically applied insecticide to go to work immediately, similar to that of pour-on applications. It’s designed to limit cattle handling and stress, while uniquely applying effective horn fly control. With this application system, the insecticide can be applied to cattle at a range of 15 to 30 feet, allowing the producer to treat animals from a safe distance. It’s as simple as laying down a lick, hay or feed to create a positive correlation with the dosing process.
