Bonnie Mohr A visit to the Bonnie Mohr Studio is a bit different than one to other fine art galleries. Like other studios, you will find the usual artist originals, art prints and note cards. What makes this studio unique is that you will also find one of Bonnie's favorite art subjects — the dairy cow. Live cows are generally not allowed in the studio, which is located on the Mohr farm, but visitors will see them lining the driveway to the studio in rural Glencoe, MN. Bonnie and her husband, John, both grew up on dairy farms in southern Minnesota. They married in 1983, and after several years of working in the Minneapolis area, they used the money they saved to invest in their dream of owning their own farm and genetics business, Glenmark Genetics. It was about that time when Bonnie became serious about her God-given ability to re-create onto canvas the things in life she so loves and respects.

Nearly two decades and five Mohr children later, the studio is now staffed by an office manager, a finance manager, a marketing person and a "just down the road" neighbor who is the shipping specialist. Bonnie recently completed the "Ideal Holstein Cow" and "Ideal Holstein Bull" pieces, which she was commissioned to paint by the National Holstein Association. The Ideal Holstein Cow and Bull have not been updated since the 1970s, and in June, she unveiled the "36 by "48" canvases at the National Holstein Convention in Missouri. Earlier this year, Bonnie was also commissioned by the Minnesota FFA Foundation to paint the "We Live to Share" piece to launch the Minnesota FFA Foundation Legacy Club. Prints of the Ideal Holstein Cow and Bull and the FFA piece are all available for sale. Who doesn't love a great 'How We Met' story? Here are the inpiring stories of two couples who found each other – thanks to FarmersOnly.com.
Finding True Love, Country-Styleyyy Meeting new people can be difficult for anyone. But for a farmer, it can be almost impossible. Their busy days leave little time to socialize. When they do have time, it's hard to find someone who understands their lifestyle. What to do? Hang out at the local feed store all day, and hope? Fortunately, the Internet is making the world a smaller, more romantic place – even for farmers.
From Silicon Valley to the Mountains (Alana's story of meeting Richard, thanks to FarmersOnly.com) Growing up in Silicon Valley, I was well aware of all the possibilities of how technology and computers could enhance one's life. Nonetheless, when it came to dating, I was hesitant to meet people online. (Call me old fashioned.) The problem I faced with living in a huge tech-savvy city was that finding someone who had the same goals and values as I did was pretty much near impossible - goals like being selfreliant and living off the land. So when one of my co-workers at the animal shelter gave me (yet again) the 'you-gotta-tryonline-dating' spiel, I decided to go for it. But it couldn't be just any dating site. It had to be one where I could find other people actually living they way I was so inspired to live. (I had lived for 4 years in Yosemite National Park and knew at a very young age that living in the great outdoors was what I wanted more than anything. I wasn't simply a gal who talked the talk. I walked the walk.) That's when I discovered, out of the blue, FarmersOnly. com. I bit the bullet and decided to join. That was early in 2010. I was surprised by how quickly I was contacted by other people. I was under the impression that it was a very small niche online community. It turns out there are a ton of farmer boys out there! But one in particular caught my eye because I had just completed a class on natural building through the Solar Living Institute in Hopland, CA, and,
A2
lo and behold, this guy had just completed building his own straw bale house in the mountains (and he was handsome to boot). But the bum wasn't contacting me! So I sent him a quick compliment on his construction job and, in a matter of minutes, he had contacted me back thanking me and telling me a bit more about it. And then he kept contacting me... and I kept writing him back.... and in that process I quickly came to learn that not only was he a person who knew the same kind of construction methods that I was interested in....but also we had a heck of a lot of other things in common as well. We were like peas and carrots! Here was this smart, funny, handsome guy who was living in the middle of nowhere (I kid you not) doing everything that I had aspired to do, from permaculture to raising chickens. After a few months of talking 'round the clock by email or phone, he invited me to visit his place. He wasn't able to leave it for more than 24 hours at a time because of the animals he had to care for and because he is incredibly remote from even the nearest neighbor. We planned my visit in March, for his birthday. This trip involved me not only taking a 5-hour drive up to mountains, but another two hour drive from there to his specific mountain, and then from there ANOTHER hour long drive on his snowmobile to get to his actual house. Talk about playing hard to get.... literally! Before I left, I had made him send me copies of his driver's license, the GPS location of his house and his mother's phone
number. My family and friends also had this information. One of the great things about Richard is that he sent me pictures of his place/daily chores/whatever he felt was picture-worthy to me just about every day, so it helped put
Alana and Richard
my mind at ease. Even though I had been talking to him every day for months now, I was still apprehensive to actually MEET him in person. I'll always remember what he said to me when I called him right before I hopped in my car for the trip: "No matter what happens between us, I want to make sure you enjoy yourself and have some fun....deal?" DEAL! Meeting him for the first time was like meeting my long-lost best friend. Sure, there were the initial butterflies in the stomach and the 'hey, I didn't know you wore glasses at night!' kind of surprises along the way, but we instantly had that feeling of companionship between us. It wasn't long before that companionship turned into a loving romance, and long story short....we were married last August and I'm enjoying my second winter snowed
800- 622- 8836 | The SO UT H E RN Fa r m a n d L i v esto ck D i re ctory |
in with him. Imagine being snowed in with your spouse for up to 6 months at a time and STILL enjoy each other's company once the snow melts! (I can't tell you how many of our friends and family said during our first winter snowed in, 'Well, if they don't kill each other, then they'll be the best of buddies, that's for sure!') All joking aside, I think back on the unbelievable fact that two people (one so remote that he doesn't even have a house address) such as us found each other. I often tell people, "I could not have written our story, who he is and everything that he brings to my life any better, if I tried." And for that, I am forever grateful to FarmersOnly.com. More about Alana and Richard: Alana and Richard live in Northern California about 60 miles from the nearest town. They try to raise much of their own food. Before winter sets in, they stock up on essentials - "from chocolate truffles to 26 bags of dog food." They work hard to have a small "footprint" on the mountain and are researching income opportunities that fit within their lifestyle. They spend much of their time gardening, exploring their outdoors and caring for their animals - meat goats, chickens, four dogs (two Labrador retrievers and two Great Pyrenees), a cat, and mini Lop rabbit. What does Alana see for their future? "Every day out here is a learning process for both of us. We both respect the great outdoors immensely and realize that while it is our idea of paradise, it also comes with a huge number
w w w. f a r m a n dl i ve sto ckdi re cto ry.co m
of challenges. We remain in a constant frame of mind to learn and prepare...and prepare and prepare. Our property gives us more than what we need when it comes to food and materials, and we are looking into how we might be able to have a small business as a result (while always making sure we have our mountain's best interest in mind...it will be here long after we will and we want to leave it as healthy and natural as possible). I look forward to growing our family, both our animals/livestock and children of our own."

Not love at first sight? (Tracey Myers of Brazil, Ind., had an unlikely dating coach: Her dad. He urged her to try FarmersOnly.com.) "I told my dad, 'I'm not a farmer. And how do you know about this online dating site? You've been married for 50 years!'" laughs Tracey. He had seen an advertisement for FarmersOnly.com and thought it might be worth a try. Tracey, 47, had divorced in Novembe, 2009, after 25 years of marriage. She was ready to start dating a few months later. "I had a strong, positive feeling that there was someone out there for me," she says. Tracey had tested another online dating site, but didn't feel comfortable with the profiles and messages she received. FarmersOnly.com was a better match for her values: honesty, being true to yourself, and commitment to family. continued on on page page A10 A15 continued

Copper Cop: A Simple Solution to Protect HVAC against Metal Theft Linear LLC, the leader in residential and commercial access control, emergency response and security solutions, announces Copper Cop, a new copper theft security solution designed to protect commercial HVAC units, one of the most frequent targets of metal thieves, from being stripped of copper piping and hardware.
Designed for easy installation to the exterior of a commercial HVAC unit, Linear's Copper Cop includes a unique wire harness and patent-pending spring-loaded clips enclosed in a durable bright yellow casing that provides "Protected by Copper Cop" warning signage to deter would-be thieves. As simple as it is effective, the Copper Cop goes to work when anyone tries to remove the HVAC cover or disarm the unit. If breached, Copper Cop connects to a local siren while also transmitting an alarm signal to a Linear or other security system which then alerts the proper authorities. Copper Cop has advantages over existing HVAC metal security solutions as well. Since it is an alarm activation device, licensed security system installers can retrofit existing HVAC units without needing an HVAC installer's license or an electrician's license. Security system installers can install Copper Cop for commercial customers directly, or work with HVAC contractors to install and monitor. Integrating with existing alarm panels is easily accomplished with Linear's wireless Transmitter/Receiver Pair (DXS-31 / DXS-702).
ABOVE: HVAC unit damaged by copper thieves. (What a nightmare!) BELOW: Close up image of the Copper Cop. Easy to install with multiple levels of security, Copper Cop is a powerful deterrent against metal thieves targeting industrial HVAC units.
Copper and metal thefts are especially destructive because the cost of repair, replacement and insurance premium increases far exceed the value of stolen metal. A $10,000 HVAC unit can be rendered useless when the $75 worth of copper tubing is removed. This imbalance makes simple, affordable solutions like the Copper Cop even more appealing. According to the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NCIB), metal thefts have increased 81 percent since 2008, with copper by far the most frequently stolen material. Critical infrastructure sources like traffic lights and railway signals, farm equipment, construction sites and unoccupied buildings have all been targeted by thieves willing to risk personal safety and cause tens of thousands of dollars in damage for a few hundred dollars worth of metal. "We've seen countless cases of businesses, churches, schools, farms and construction sites targeted by metal thieves, often because of inadequate security," said Duane Paulsen, senior vice president of product and market development for Linear. "Copper Cop is the simplest, most affordable and effective solution to combat copper theft because it provides a visual deterrent on the HVAC unit, an audio deterrent with the siren, and an immediate security response via integration with existing security systems."

Even the federal government recognizes the threat caused by metal theft in an unclassified FBI intelligence assessment that states, "Copper thieves are threatening US critical infrastructure...and present a risk to both public safety and national security." «What's New Nutra-Flo Adds to Company’s Product Lineup MicroSolutions™ EDTA chelated nutrients can help correct and prevent nutritional deficiencies in crops to deliver bigger yields Nutra-Flo, a leading provider of starter and foliar applied liquid fertilizers is excited to launch the new MicroSolutions micronutrients line of products. The MicroSolutions line of chelated micronutrients have the highest efficiency, which means growers can use less product per acre to achieve the same results as compared to non-chelated nutrients. Growers can blend MicroSolutions micronutrients with liquid fertilizer to help correct and/or prevent micronutrient deficiencies, which can be one of the largest stresses on crop growth and development. “The MicroSolutions line will help growers correct the micronutrient deficiencies that their crops may have,” said Raun Lohry, President of Nutra-Flo Company. “Not getting the right amount of certain micronutrients can really starve crops and reduces yield potential. Today’s high yields and stressful growing conditions can remove more nutrients than ever from the soil, and can render naturally occurring micronutrients temporarily unavailable when the plant needs them the most. Using the MicroSolutions line with starter fertilizer at planting time helps prevent these deficiencies.”
Available in 2.5 gallon jugs, 250 gallon totes or in bulk, the new MicroSolutions micronutrients are compatible with all types of fertilizers including 100% orthophosphates and many herbicides and insecticides. The chelated micronutrients available are: copper (7.5%), calcium (3%), boron (10% not chelated), iron (4.5%), manganese (6%), zinc (6% and 9%), RGS® (Nutra-Flo’s zinc ammine acetate product, chemically identical to ACA®) and specialty mixes designed for specific crop types such as corn and soybeans. MicroSolutions are immediately available through the Nutra-Flo network of dealers for sale. Why use a chelated micronutrient? The molecular structure in EDTA chelates protects zinc, manganese, calcium, copper and iron from ‘tie-up’ in the soil and makes the micronutrient available to plants and ensures maximum effectiveness.
RoMax7™ Corn-Starter Bundle added to the PureGrade® line of liquid fertilizers to help boost corn yields Contains RGS® (Root Growth Stimulator) Nutra-Flo’s zinc ammine acetate, chemically identical to ACA® Nutra-Flo Company announces the newest addition to the PureGrade product line of low-salt liquid fertilizers, RoMax7. RoMax7, a corn-starter bundle, contains a special blend of seven nutrients, (7-17-3) nitrogen, phosphorous, and potassium, plus chelated micronutrients zinc, manganese, copper, and iron. Like all PureGrade products, RoMax7 can be safely used in close proximity to the seed, roots, and foliage for better fertilizer efficiency. RoMax7 also contains RGS, Nutra-Flo’s zinc ammine acetate. “We’re excited to offer this new product. As a corn-starter bundle, RoMax7 takes the guesswork out of planting. Growers can depend on RoMax7 to make their lives much easier,” said Ed Ummach, Vice President of the PureGrade Products Division. “RoMax7 helps prevent micronutrient deficiencies. Essential crop functions are dependent on complex interactions between NPK and micronutrients. The correct amount of some nutrients - and not enough of others – can starve your crops and reduce your yield potential.” RoMax7 delivers the same features found in all PureGrade Liquid Starter Fertilizers. The result is a more efficient use of valuable nutrients and higher yields. Crops that respond to RoMax7 include corn, soybeans, canola, cotton, wheat, and milo.
Dennis Zabel, Nutra-Flo Agronomist added, “because essential crop functions are dependent on complex interactions between NPK and micronutrients, we need to consider Liebig’s Law of the Minimum: Yields are limited by the nutrient in shortest supply. If a grower’s goal is to improve fertilizer efficiency while growing more with less – they shouldn’t overlook the power of MicroSolutions micronutrients.”
Additionally, RoMax7 with RGS is useful for zinc deficient soils, one of the most common micronutrient deficiencies. Zinc ammine acetate products like RGS have been proven in field trials – on millions of acres – to increase root mass and improve yields. RGS can stimulate vigorous root growth, help intercept more nutrients and can stimulate deeper root growth to access more subsoil moisture and penetrate compacted soils. For more information, contact Sarah Sanem Bradshaw at 712-279-1936, visit online at www.nutra-flo.com or www. puregrade.com.

New Work Gloves Made with 3M™ Gripping Material Take Hold in Most Situations Two-Part System Provides up to a 270 Percent Improvement in Friction 3M announced recently the introduction of Work Gloves made with 3M™ Gripping Material that deliver greater productivity and performance with less effort. Work Gloves made with 3M™ Gripping Material can provide up to a 270 percent improvement in friction when used as a two-part system and are ideal for anyone — from farm and construction workers, to weekend warriors — who need a better grip especially in wet or oily conditions. Comprised of thousands of micro fingers, the 3M™ Gripping Material, which is incorporated into the work gloves, enhances traction and hold on many tools and pieces of equipment. This means, reduced slippage, fewer dropped tools and improved productivity with less fatigue. The Work Gloves can be used alone, or as a two-part system, which mates the gloves with tools or piece of equipment wrapped with 3M™ Gripping Material tape. The two-part system significantly improves friction over traditional leather gloves and wraps. In addition, the Work Gloves are resistant to abrasion and punctures so they stand up to the demands of the factory and in the field. “Not being able to properly grip tools because of wet or oily conditions can be frustrating,” said Tanya Richert, global marketing development manager, 3M Industrial Adhesives and Tapes Division. “Whether you are hand-tightening an oil filter in your garage, shifting levers or cutting tree limbs in your backyard, grip performance is always a concern. Work Gloves made with 3M™ Gripping Material bring science and better grip performance to any job by allowing the users the ability to grip lighter, not tighter.” In a 3M-sponsored study, researchers at the University of Wisconsin found that using 3M™ Gripping Material under dry conditions reduced required grip force by an average of 24 percent. Using 3M™ Gripping Material for twisting tasks, oil-saturated surfaces reduced the average grip force needed by 56 percent. 3M™ Gripping Material is available for a wide-range of applications. In addition to work gloves and tape, golf gloves and batting gloves are also available for situations where a strong grip offers a performance advantage. To purchase Work Gloves made with 3M™ Gripping Material, visit www.Shop3M.com/gripping.

Tax Provisions for 2013
Virden Perma-Bilt Co. 806-352-2761 www.virdenproducts.com
Dear Michael: It appears that we've passed the 'fiscal cliff' with relatively little damage to our tax situation – especially in the case of estate taxes. What is your summation of the new tax bill passed by Congress? – Survived the Fall Dear Survived: The really good news about the bill is that the estate tax was kept at the current five million one hundred and twenty thousand per person – double that for married people – and that it was made 'permanent' by this tax law. Also made permanent was the 'portability of the Unified Credit between spouses – meaning if one spouse dies without using their credit, their surviving spouse can use the unused portion on their estate at the time of their death. However, in order to qualify for this unused Credit from a decedent spouse, the personal representative of the estate must file with IRS regarding the need to keep this credit for the surviving spouse at the time of the filing of the estate tax return or within nine months of the date of the death of the decedent spouse. Many non-professional Personal Representatives are not going to know to file for this with IRS upon the death of the first decedent spouse. The easiest thing to do is for people to 'automatically' file for this unused Credit upon the death of the first spouse (parent) so there won't be anything left on the table in the event you need this Credit someday. This should give people some peace of mind regarding their estate tax planning – although it would be nice if Congress gave everyone a sixty day 'tax holiday' to allow them to undo all of the panic gifting they did prior to the end of the year when they thought one million dollars per person was on the horizon. One has to remember there are all kinds of items in this bill yet to be resolved, however, and 'permanent' may not be as long as everyone believes it to be. The bad news on the estate tax front is that estate taxes over and above this amount will now be taxed at forty percent rather than the thirty-five percent they were at prior to 2013. There's also the fact capital gains will stay the same for many people – those that earn less than $400,000 as an individual or $450,000 if they are married. For those over this amount, the capital gains rate will rise from 15% to 20%. This would include people who have one time sale of properties as well as those who regularly earn more than $400,000 or $450,000. Any income – including capital gains income – putting you over this amount will result in higher capital gains. Don't forget that you also will have to pay the additional 3.8% for unearned income (capital gains, rents, etc.) over A6
and above $250,000. As such, some people will be passing through the capital gains taxation with a portion at 15%, a portion at 18.8%, and the remainder over $400-450,000 at 23.8%! That's a pretty healthy increase from a top of 15% in 2012. The other items are the cessation of the 2% 'Social Security tax holiday' for everyone – meaning both the employee and the employer will once again pay 6.2% - or 12.4% total if you're self-employed. This was never intended to be a long-term tax break and was merely another attempt to bolster the economy by leaving more money in people's paychecks. However, in light of the seriousness of Social Security's long-term viability, perhaps this is one 'holiday' we'd prefer to pass by rather than pay the consequences of having liquidity problems with Social Security in the future. Last but not least is that people earning more than $400,000 as a single person or $450,000 as a married couple will now return to the 39.6% tax rate on income over and above this amount of income. More egregious is the new 'phase-out' rules whereby single people earning more than $250,000 and married people earning more than $300,000 will see their deductions being phased out. Such deductions would be home loan interest, education deductions, state income taxes paid as well as property taxes and charitable deductions. The deductions are reduced by 3% of the amount your AGI exceeds the threshold amounts but no more than 80% of these deductions. Still on the table are whether or not Congress is going to tax the inside cash value buildup of life insurance policies, annuities, retirement plans, IRA's, etc. including whether death benefits on life insurance should be taxed. These are all still on the table of possible 'cuts' by Congress as they meet over the next few months to iron out the tax cuts necessary to make this whole tax bill float. These items have been the backbone of American savings for decades, but they are being scrutinized by Congress for possible revenue. Also, a 'new' Congress will be seated in 2013 and their agenda may be different from the 2012 Congress's agenda, so nothing is set in stone at this point in time. ________________________________________ Do you have questions about estate planning? Farmers’ bIn comparison to their urban neighbors, rural residents of the U.S. have a greater need for, but reduced access to healthcare, especially behavioral health services. By behavioral health services I mean counseling, prescription of psychotropic medications, addictions treatments and any other professional services aimed at helping people deal with emotional turmoil. In the Fall 2012 issue of The Register Report (Available at www. NationalRegister.org), Dr. Jackson Rainer of Valdosta State University in Georgia, makes the following assessment: “Rural residents have higher levels of depression, substance abuse, domestic violence, incest, and child maltreatment than residents of urban areas.” Rainer cites a host of references to back his claims. In an article in the American Journal of Public Health (June 2006 issue, pages 954-955), Dr. Ramin Mojtabai analyzed the annual National Health Interview Survey data for the years 1997-2002. He found that the prevalence of significant psychological distress was higher in nonmetropolitan areas than in metropolitan areas. This finding varied from earlier research, which reported few differences between urban and rural rates of psychological distress. Even though their need for professional services was higher, Mojtabai reported that rural survey participants were less likely than their urban counterparts to seek mental health care. Rural residents also were less able to afford medications and professional behavioral health services. Lack of professional behavioral healthcare providers contributes to the problem of limited access for rural residents. Data (available at www.raconline.org and the National Organization of State Offices of Rural Health) used to calculate health professional shortage areas indicate the number of psychiatrists and psychologists per 100,000 residents in rural areas is half that of these same providers in urban and suburban areas. Recent surveys, such as the annual National Health Interview Survey, consistently indicate rural residents also tend to be older, poorer, lesser educated and to have more transportation difficulties than their urban counterparts. Rural residents are more likely to lack health insurance. Writing for the Daily Yonder (www.dailyyonder.com/uninsured-rural-america/2012/10/22/4597), Bill Bishop reported rural and exurban counties (regions lying beyond the suburbs of a city) had higher percentages of residents under age 65 without health insurance than counties with cities or suburbs. The counties with the most uninsured were in the intermountain region of the West and in the South. Thirty-two of the fifty rural and exurban counties with the largest percentages of uninsured persons were in Texas.

In 2003 I collected information about insurance costs for farm people, as a subsection of rural residents. Farm and ranch owners were more likely to have health insurance than workers on farms. The deductible amounts and the premiums paid by the owners were higher than for people not engaged in agriculture. Are there solutions? The recently passed Affordable Care Act (ACA) addresses the lack of healthcare insurance. As written currently, it is estimated the ACA will reduce the number of uninsured people by half.
The ACA creates a “medical home” team of care providers which includes a nurse care manager and a primary care provider (physician, nurse practitioner or physician assistant) who follow the patient’s overall health and manage most medications, and psychiatrists, psychologists and other specialists who are available as consultants either in-person or through telecommunications. The ACA penalizes hospitals, clinics and insurers with too high administrative costs. Current administrative costs by the Medicare system on a “per case” basis are well below those of private facilities and insurers; Medicare provides a model for administrative cost-saving. The ACA also offers tax credits to small businesses, such as most farm operations, to make insurance more affordable for their employees. Unless the ACA is significantly “tweaked,” the Congressional Budget Office estimates 30 million residents will still lack healthcare insurance a decade after its full implementation. Besides extending insurance coverage, the “tweaking” that needs to be done should include reducing excessive costs for drugs and certain procedures, limiting malpractice awards, and establishing a single claims processor, among other things, in order to approach “budget neutral.” There is also a need to address the persistent stigma that seeking behavioral healthcare assistance is a sign of weakness. Farm and rural people especially tend to be self reliant and avoid seeking behavioral health services even when needed. Improving education about behavioral health in rural areas is essential. We should look at our behavior as something we can manage. Even using the term “behavioral health” is more acceptable to most people than “mental health.” Training currently available primary physicians in rural areas to respond better to the behavioral healthcare needs of their patients and training more psychologists and behavioral health nurse practitioners to prescribe psychotropic medications are also partial solutions. Current estimates by most primary care providers are that about 25-50 percent of their services involve treating behavioral health problems. Together with full implementation of a “tweaked” ACA, better training to diagnose and treat rural and agricultural patients’ behavioral health would vastly improve the overall quality of healthcare in rural America. _______________________________________________________ Dr. Michael R. Rosmann brings the perspective of a farmer in “Farm And Ranch Life”. Dr. Rosmann grew up on a mixed grain and livestock farm in Western Iowa where he experienced enjoyable hard work and 4-H, and witnessed the stresses that accompany farming and farm life. Dr. Rosmann developed the first mental health response in Iowa to the Farm Crisis of the 1980s. In 2001, Dr. Rosmann, along with partners in seven states, founded the nonprofit network, AgriWellness Inc. AgriWellness conducted research and provided counseling services to farm people. It became clearer that a specialized field – agricultural behavioral health – was needed to respond to the unique problems experienced by farmers, ranchers and others involved in agriculture. Email Dr. Rosmann at mike@agriwellness.org, or visit his website at www.agbehavioralhealth.com. You can call him at his office in Harlan, Iowa at 712-235-6100.

Pennywise
Another Tool in the Fine Art of Money Management By Paula Vogelgesang
Email: Pennywise at pennywise@gwtc.net.
The Cost Of Living: What Is It, And How Much? Do you know what your monthly cost of living is? Does it stay pretty much the same, or does it vary? Do you have a budget (yes, that nasty B word) every month, or do you just "wing it”, and spending the money until it's gone? Are you hard pressed to pay the rent or utilities every month? Does your heat or water cost more at certain times of the year? If you feel your "cost of living" is out of control, try this experiment. For just one month, write down every single penny that you spend (use a little notebook). DO NOT change the way you spend your money right now. All you are doing is tracking your spending on that morning cup of coffee or cinnamon roll you buy on your way to work; that candy bar, or bag of chips you grab when you stop for gas; that very latest cell phones or tablets; that new piercing or tattoo that your teenager "just
has to have" right now! How many times a week/month do you eat out? Is it a planned expense, or do you eat out because you don't have time, or don't feel like cooking? How much did you spend for groceries, and what did you buy? Simple foods to prepare at home or the "instant foods" frozen, deli, etc.? Keep track of everything you buy; add up all of the "must pay." Expenses (rent or house payment of the roof over your head). Utilities (water, lights). Groceries (the food for your table). Telephone services (cell phones Television, cable, satellite). Gas and upkeep on vehicles). Work medications, if necessary. Prescriptions and insurances (homeowners, health). Clothing and accessories. Credit card payments. Subtract these necessary
expenses from your paycheck, and figure out how much you should have left! Chances are the dollars that were (to use an old saying) "Frittered away," will astound you, but not in a good way! You can change all of that by preparing a budget (there's that nasty B word again) and sticking to it. By eliminating the "snacky stuff" and reserving the I WANT'S for birthdays, Christmas or other celebrations, you will have dollars in your pocket and eliminate those services being cut off, because you didn't pay the bills on time. There are countless articles out there to help you learn how to manage your money wisely. However, the first step is to find out WHERE the money is going?
Write down the essentials. Rent/House payment, utilities/ lights, heat, phone, food/groceries, car/pickup payment, gas/oil, other debts, credit cards (which may have to be cut up). Once you have listed the essentials, and know exactly how much they cost you each month, you can start adding in the other needs/wants into your lives, as the money becomes available Remember, it's all about control; and you are the ones in control of your spending and money. You decide how every penny is to be spent. –Till next month, Paula
A simple sheet of paper, with columns of list of bills to be paid, is the easiest start.
De-Fat The Nuts, Freezer Burn "Fix", Re-Use Those Dryer Sheets, Free Stud Finder For Remodelers and MORE! De-Fat The Nuts If you want to de-fat your favorite nuts before using them in cookies or breads, it's easy. You simply put them in a couple layers of paper towels, and crush them. Once they are in smaller pieces, strew them onto a cookie sheet lined with parchment or brown paper grocery bags that have been split (that's what I use). Put the cookie sheets in a 250° oven for 10-15 minutes. The paper will absorb the fat that runs out of the nutmeats as they are heated and the nuts will also be toasted. I like the flavor of the toasted nuts and find that you can cut the amount of nuts in half (saving more calories and fat). I like the nuts for flavor and crunch, but since I'm on a low fat diet, this allows me to enjoy a few of my favorite treats in spite of it.
Freezer Burn "Fix" If you have some meat that has been residing in the bottom of your freezer, a tad that is too long (read that, lost in the jungle of a disorganized freezer), it can develop an "off flavor," and even get some white spots (freezer burn) on parts of the meat. There is a "fix" for this: put about a ½ cup of vinegar, can be white or cider, doesn't matter. In the bottom of a large pan, add the frozen meat. Let it thaw in the refrigerator for about 24 hours, turning over once in a while. The meat will thaw slowly, and the
A8
vinegar will take away the ˜freezer" taste. Vinegar also helps to tenderize the tougher cuts of meat, and it cannot be tasted when the meat is cooked. Just pour off the vinegar when you are ready to proceed with your recipe, and use it as if it were fresh meat.
buy one of those stud-finder gizmo's in the hardware store, just get out the old electric razor. Run it over the walls and it will tell you right where the stud is by the change in the noise the razor makes. Works just as well as the gadget, and you probably have a razor in the home already.
I Want It - Rears It's Head
Kids Barette And Bow Storage
I was in a city about two hours from home last week and witnessed something I wish I wouldn't have seen. A couple and their two small children were wondering around in one of those big box stores looking at the furniture. The lady decided that she wanted this particular couch and chair for well over $1,000. The gentleman with her, I presumed it was her husband, said "we don't have the money". She retorted, "I have this Credit Card! See?" He said, "I know you have that card, but the interest rate is 29% if you can't pay it off all at once, and we just don't have the money. We simply cannot afford it!" To which she replied, "I DON'T CARE! I want it and I'm going to have it!" I made my escape around the corner then, but "it makes one wonder."
Free Stud Finder For Remodelers Planning on doing some renovating after the holidays? A reader wrote — rather than
This is so simple. Just use an old belt. Hang it on the wall or over a hanger in the closet. Clip the hair decorations in place and you will always be able to find them.
Moving; Need The Protective Padding? Instead of buying those expensive moving pads to protect your good furniture when moving, simply gather up some of those old mattress pads. Yard sales, tag sales and motel sales, are a good place to find them. Just wash them well in hot water, and dry outside on the line or the deck railing before using.
Re-Use Those Dryer Sheets Put a used dryer sheet in the bottom of the waste basket, it keeps odors at bay
blinds, the anti-static properties keep dust from re-settling. REMEMBER, if you use dryer sheets, be sure to scrub your dryer screen with hot, soapy water at least once a month. The same stuff that softens your clothes builds up on the screen and can cause the dryer to overheat, starting a fire! Also, remember to clean the dryer, screen after every load of clothes. Dryer lint is extremely flammable!
Sea Shell Pretties Do you have one of the gadgets that melt scented wax? (warmers). What do you do with the remains of the wax chips? A reader suggested this: She said: “I hate to waste anything and have found a way to use the remaining wax in my warmer. I had a bag of seashells purchased at a bath store and decided to pour the remains of the wax into these little shells. I can then place them in dresser drawers or on the closet shelves as a mild scent instead of buying something else to do the same thing. “If one were to purchase wicking at a craft store, I’m thinking that you could make candles from the wax remains, even striped ones as you use the different colors in the warmer? Just a thought to stretch those dollars a bit further."

Peppermint Bark A reader from down south wrote: "I buy candy canes on sale after Christmas, usually just 25 cents for a dozen. And if you watch the sales, grocery stores will have the ‘bark candy’ foundations on sale too – usually white almond and the chocolate. I break up the candy canes and set them aside and then melt two pounds of the white almond, stir in the broken canes and ½ teaspoon of peppermint oil and stir again. Spread onto cookie sheets lined with waxed paper and let chill for a good 30 minutes and then break into pieces. This is a bit different than the usual ‘bark’ candy and works well for Valentine treats.
'Stuck' Prevention Save a couple of gallon milk jugs, or have a neighbor save you some. Rinse them out, let them dry well and then fill with the cheap ‘kitty litter’ and place the jugs in the trunk of your car. If you park where it’s icy, you can sprinkle some of the litter under and around your tires so you can get going again without sliding sideways into something or someone else.
Ice Melt (New Version) A friend told me this helpful hint. She says: “ Instead of using that ICE MELT SALT on your sidewalks this winter, use the dry fertilizer you spread on your yard come spring. The fertilizer will not eat up the cement sidewalk like salt does – and in the spring, your grass will ‘jump right up’ where the fertilizer has dissolved into the grass!" (This one sounds good to me and I’m going to try it! – Paula) _________________________________________ If you have tips or ideas to share, send them to Pennywise, Box 518, Kadoka, SD 57543 or better yet, email Pennywise at pennywise@gwtc.net. She took dad's advice and set up a profile on FarmersOnly. com as "MsHappy." She started cautiously, only doing anonymous searches on the site. Within just a few weeks, she received a "flirt" from "Cavalier," Bill Dunn of Franklin, Ind. Their similar profile names were the first indication of a possible match. Bill, 47, lived only 70 miles away from Tracy's hometown. He had recently divorced after 24 years of marriage and had been raised on a farm. "I thought, 'Do I send something back? Well, why not?'" So, they exchanged messages for several
weeks, talking about their families, their kids, their jobs, and their values. They arranged a dinner date in early March. It turned out Bill's sister works across the street from Tracey, a connection that made their meeting more comfortable. "It wasn't love at first sight, for either of us," says Tracey. Instead, Tracey was so nervous that she could hardly speak. "I just kept saying the same things over and over, talking about anything." Bill was driving to the restaurant and Tracey was navigating. "I made a joke about women
always having to give directions to men and we laughed and the conversation seemed a little easier after that."
In May of 2010, they introduced each other to their parents. In June, they met each other's grown kids. Everything changed on Oct. 10, 2010, the day Bill proposed.
Tracey says the date was nice, but she didn't leave thinking she had found her match.
state, so Bill called and put her on speaker phone so she could listen in. "Then, he just walked up to me bent down and opened a ring box and said 'Tracey, will you marry me?' I was shocked, and said, 'Can I think about it?' Everyone laughed and then I said, 'Yes!' "
Bill arranged a dinner with her parents and children at Tracey's house. One daughter was out of
"I had planned to keep looking and keep my options open since I was still new to dating again. However, we kept talking online, texting and talking by phone and it led to another date and another. We had fun no matter what we we were doing," says Tracey. "We just fell in love over time."
Mr. and Mrs. Bill and Tracey Dunn.
Cavalier and MsHappy became Mr. and Mrs. Bill and Tracey Dunn on Jan. 15, 2011. They married in Bill's home church. "I love him more today than I did the day I married him," Tracey says. "I realized I met the love of my life on FarmersOnly.com."

Super-Earth found: Could life be next? The search for planets capable of supporting life has claimed a big prize: Astronomers have identified one world 42 light-years away in the zone where life is most likely to form: close enough to its star to have Earthlike temperatures and possibly water in liquid form, and revolving in a regular cycle of day and night. What makes the planet even more interesting is its size: It’s about seven times the size of our world. The second-closest potential “super-Earth” is located 620 light-years away from us.

The Origin of Jesus Christ, Our Savior, Described by John like us, but was without sin. To die on the cross is a perfect sacrifice for our sins. He was the real light that shined in this sinful and damned world. If we believe in this light, we become sons of God, and are saved. Jesus was a Jew, and the Jews, His own, would not have him hanged on the cross.
Since we are still close to the Christmas Season, I thought it would be nice to see how John described the origin of Jesus Christ our Savior. John 1:1, "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not anything made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe. He was not the Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. That was the true light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. He came unto his own, and his own received him not. But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will 1of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. And2 the Word was made flesh, 1 among us, (and we beheld his and dwelt glory, the glory as2of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ. 3
St. John spoke of the beginning of the world of Jesus Christ, as the 3rd 3person of God. He helped create the world in 6 days, and rested about 6,000 years ago. Then a little less than 4,000 years later, John the Baptist was sent to be a forerunner of Christ, to prepare the world for Jesus. Just about 2,000 years ago, Jesus – the Word – became flesh just
You see, either you believe the reality of the Bible being 100% truth, and use it as the moral truth in our lives; or you will have to make it up, which I do think many want to do now, called relative truth. You can’t really go wrong once you believe in Jesus as your Savior. That will bring love into your heart, and the will to want to do good for others, and the joy knowing you will someday go to Heaven. The other road is whatever you want to make it up to be, which would be living your life not being a son of God, no faith.

Is Selfishness The Solution To Our Country's Problems? We've got problems. Our economy has stagnated; unemployment is high; we have an almost inconceivable amount of national debt; and our elected officials are fighting among themselves. What we need are some good solutions. What's to blame for this mess? In a country that is so politically divided, surprisingly you'll often get the same answer in Beverly Hills that you'll get in Biloxi, Miss.: selfishness. Wall Street greed. Selfish homeowners stripping their homes of equity. The fat cat one percent exploiting the 99 percent. Excessive executive compensation. Whether you're red or blue, black, white, brown or something in between, we can all agree that the root cause of our problems is selfishness. Or can we? What if I suggested that selfishness is not only not to blame for our problems, but that selfishness can actually solve our problems? Ridiculous? Maybe not. A powerful new book from Yaron Brook and Don Watkins titled "Free Market Revolution: How Ayn Rand's Ideas Can End Big Government," argues that "Economic freedom can flourish only in an America that celebrates selfishness – the individual's pursuit of his rational, long-term self-interest – as a virtue." Did you catch that? Celebrate selfishness as a virtue. As someone who has written that "greed is good" and who has espoused the ideas of self-interest on John Stossel's TV show, I wholeheartedly agree. The authors argue that our current economic dystopia is not the result of selfishness, but the result of the attack on the virtue of selfishness. This attack on the pursuit of happiness is an assault on capitalism itself and leads to an ever increasing government state that restricts our individual and economic freedoms. So why does selfishness get such a bad rap, and why does it always lead to more regulations and a larger government? Brook and Watkins lay out two reasons: The argument from greed and the argument from need. Selfishness is bad, according to the argument from greed, because those who are selfish are inherently destructive and their evil ways need to be reigned in by government. In other words, we need more and more regulations to temper the actions of the greedy business people who only care about profits. More regulations mean more restrictions on our economic freedoms. The argument from need is equally common. Just last week, one of the stories that the media has jumped on is the New York City police officer who gave a barefoot homeless man a pair of boots. One man's kindness and generosity to provide for another has sparked a national interest that we, collectively as a nation, should be doing more to help the homeless. "Wherever there is someone in need," writes Brook and Watkins, "we think something must be done." Since the story of the homeless man broke, it was discovered that he has chosen to live on the streets of New York City. CBS reports that he has had an apartment and that he receives support from veterans' benefits, federal Section 8 assistance and Social Security. Paraphrasing Creedence Clearwater Revival, "How much more should we give? [Politicians] only answer more! More! More!" This desire to always do more and more and more creates an even larger entitlement state – what the authors define as "Programs that redistribute wealth in the name of guaranteeing important needs." So large, in fact, that over 60 percent of the federal budget goes to fund entitlements. The solution to create economic growth and prosperity is rational self-interest. We need to shift from attacking self-interest, the evils of the profit motive and capitalism, and instead celebrate individuals trying to better themselves without sacrificing their lives to others in the process – what Ayn Rand and the authors call altruism. Brook and Watkins sum up selfishness by quoting Ayn Rand's novel "Atlas Shrugged," "I swear – by my life and my love of it – that I will never live for the sake of another man, nor ask another man to live for mine." If we focus less on the "we" and more on the "me," where each of us is doing what we can to create a better, fuller, richer life for ourselves, while not obstructing others doing the same, we have the necessary ingredients to reduce our bloated government and to create individual and national prosperity.

clear clutter, organize your home, & reclaim your life Clear Closet Clutter For Good! Welcome to the New Year! A new year can be a fresh start, but that can be difficult if we are feeling overstuffed after the holidays and our storage spaces are overflowing too. There is help and hope. To cure closet chaos, learn two techniques the pros use. All closet systems manufacturers and professional organizers incorporate these ideas: First, they use every square inch of storage space in closets-taking advantage of spaces overlooked by the rest of us. Second, they make sure stored items are easy to reach and accessible to everyone who needs them (a critical concern unless you like maintaining all the closets in your home or office all by yourself). To maximize closet space, put extra shelving in closets to use the current dead space above existing closet shelves but below the closet ceiling. Add an extra shelf in every closet for excellent tertiary (infrequently accessed) storage space throughout the home in every closet. Next, use the forgotten middle space between the bottom of shirts on hangers and the floor in the bedroom, entryway, and other wardrobe closets. Do this by stacking storage boxes from the floor up through this “middle” storage space that is often just empty air space. Use hooks inside closets and hang things on the insides of closet doors. Any way to turn empty air space into functional storage is acceptable. Finally, go all the way to the floor with divided compartment storage containers such as divided shoeboxes or other stackable storage containers. I recently watched some closet pros demonstrate their systems. They showed how to create double hanging and how to maximize shelf and drawer storage space inside a closet. One system was also adjustable. Adjustability is important because storage needs change over time. Children’s clothes get wider and longer as they grow. Adults change their minds about what they want to store as new hobbies, businesses, or clothing habits come into their lives, or, as rooms are repurposed, the closets in them need to be able to store different categories of stuff than previously. There are professional closet systems, do-it-yourself kits from home supply stores, and stackable laminated wood boxes from retail stores that carry household products. Many of these products are available online. And, of course, you can make your own by stacking up large plastic milk crates or heavy-duty cardboard boxes, and adding your own extra rods or shelving. For me, it was important to make storage areas functional for everyone in my household. A good example was my small entryway closet. Remember a television series called The Odd Couple? As the family organizer, I was an untidy Oscar pretending to be a very tidy Felix. I was motivated enough to try to jam a heavy Minnesota winter coat onto a flimsy metal dry cleaner style hanger and wedge it into the over-crowded tiny closet. I pushed the other coats to each side, quickly hung up my coat, and let the other coats slip A12

back into place before my coat slid onto the floor--I called this elaborate technique "the pressure fit maneuver." I was motivated enough to go through that process several times every day, but would the other people in my family put themselves through this? My spouse wasn't going bother with it. I didn’t blame him. He would throw his coat on a chair or couch, explaining that he would be going out again in a few hours (or days). As for my children? Well, they couldn’t even reach the coat rod, much less perform the "pressure fit maneuver.”
Solution: New rules, good equipment, and better habits New rule: I limited each member of the family to two in-season coats in this closet at a time (Okay, I cheated-there are a couple of raincoats in there too). I also got rid of a lot of other things in the closet that didn't belong there.
Good equipment: I bought decent heavy-duty hangers that could handle the weight of heavy coats instead of trying to get by with flimsy, though frugal, metal dry cleaner hangers. Finally, I installed some hooks on a horizontal board that was secured to the solid edges of the inside of the hollow core closet door at kid-height. Now I had a small coat closet that was accessible and functional for everyone in my family. I even had a few decent hangers and a small amount of space for company coats!

Better habits: It took a couple of weeks to train my young children to use the new improved system. They learned to fling open the closet door and throw their jacket hoods over the hooks reachable to them. My spouse turned out to be thrilled enough by the heavy-duty hangers and uncluttered space to help me out too. Why do I believe in curing closet chaos? Am I digging through the box in the back of a closet to find my authentic self, to move on from the past, or to simply make functional storage space for all family members? Whatever the motivation, curing closet chaos frees up time and space in our lives for what is important, and now we can usually open our closets when company comes. By applying these professional organizer concepts of designing the space to fit your life and closets, and creating new rules and habits using better equipment, you will too!

“PROFITS GROW WITH KNIGHTRO” –Ken E. Knight Knightro Sessions | Mending Fences and Tending Senses
Why Should We Thank the National Farmers Organization? As we look forward to a new year of continued prosperity in the agriculture sector despite the outcome of the current political arena, let us pause to reflect upon the organization that is most responsible for the current status of the American farmer. It's unfortunate that the NFO never stood to see the day that the fruit of their labors produced such a bountiful harvest. The American farmer is better off today than at any time in history; all of which is due to the unheralded effort of the National Farmers Organization. After years of blood, sweat, and tears, there is no doubt in my mind as to who should be given the credit. Who else could have possibly sacrificed as much for so little; only to see the next generation of farmers living on easy street? Farmers today are subsidized, compensated, and prioritized at a guaranteed level of income far beyond that of most any other similar government supported entity. Just the food stamp program alone is a guaranteed of yet better days to come, but add to that disaster payments, land conservation payments, and you have the foundation of the most successful business in the nation. Farming is now the envy of energy, manufacturing, and international trading. Food is now the gold standard of the world! Farming has moved from that of high risk, labor intense, and low income to that of wealth, prestige and security. It was the NFO that pushed the envelope and brought it to this new high level of enviable decorum. It was the NFO that introduced the philosophy of "risk management" that went on to become the primary marketing tool of all successful farm market planning. Today it is the primary gauge of all agricultural financing, and is considered the benchmark for determining all management decisions. That's not a bad eulogy for an organization that is now dead, but it represents only a small cog in the wheel that drove this organization. Cost of production plus a reasonable profit wasn't too much to ask for furnishing a guaranteed supply of raw material for an industry that fed the nation. Without a constant supply of livestock, the meat packing industry would he pretty vulnerable. Though some have integrated, none are self-sufficient. And if it hadn't been for the NFO that supply
would still be in question. It was the NFO that exerted enough pressure, made enough noise, and drafted enough marketing plans to get the attention of Washington. Their demands were introduced into a farm bill that addressed the inequities of pricing commodities. Value finally became a consideration in determining parity and fairness for all parties involved. No longer was it just he with the biggest stick that made a profit.
were destroyed, and even blood was shed just for you! Winning the battle didn't put much in their pocket, but it filled every com crib and locker plant in the country, so that you could enjoy the fruits of their battle.
suffer. They suffered, that you might enjoy the fruits of their labor. Please remember this when you put your next livestock marketing plan together and contract at a price that will guarantee you a profit.
Don't take this for granted! Collective bargaining is the cornerstone of every piece of agricultural legislation that is introduced in Washington. The NFO has left its mark on agriculture forever, and will be remembered for making the sacrifices so that you will never have to
A tarnished NFO image needs to be shined-up, so with this message going to every corner of the country, I hope that a legend of this magnitude will not continue to go unnoticed and unappreciated.
Before the NFO, agricultural policy was nothing more than making sure America had cheap food, regardless of the consequences of the American farmer. Occasionally, there was limited emergency relief offered as a token of appreciation. But, here again, it was more about keeping the food pipeline full than it was about the farmers bottom line. A good example was that of the dairy "buy-out" program that did nothing more than cull the herd of non-productive units. The House Agriculture committee has always been more concerned about feeding the poor than it was about the poor farmer. As long as farmers were willing to value a way of life higher than a complete return on investment, Washington was willing to take it all in strides. It wasn't until the NFO put out the battle cry that enough is enough – and the farmer's plight was to be taken serious. As he stood there all alone with nothing more than the American flag as his backdrop, and his pride, honor and faith as his source of strength, he joined forces with his neighbor to stand up and fight for everything he believed. It was undeniably the greatest show of strength to ever come forth in our entire industrialized world. It was a measurable battle that benefited every farmer in America. If you're a successful farmer, there is a good chance that you owe a debt of gratitude for those that gave up everything for you! Farms were lost, neighborhoods

A Ride Down Memory Lane How I Saw the Plight of the 1960's Era American Farmer I entered the livestock marketing scene at approximately the same time the National Farmers Organization did. It was the early 60's, and hogs were selling in the $15.00 to $18.00/cwt. range, so it was clearly a time of unrest and desperation for hog farmers. It was a time when just a nickel per hundred weigh would make or break a deal, and the producers didn't have much skin in the game. The packer was definitely in the driver's seat, so is it any wonder that hog producers were up in arms and willing to try most anything to bring some parity to the marketing game? Thus was born the concept of collective bargaining — where hog producers would pool their production and bargain for better prices. The first such movement was done in the heartland of Iowa, right on the door step of Oscar Mayer & Co. Obviously, their actions were stirring up a lot of interest by my then employer. So, as one of my first official duties, they sent me to spy on this activity that was perceived to be an unscrupulous plan to overthrow the meat packing industry. They sent me as an undercover agent to report back numbers, names, and market destinations. After all, who would betray their market loyalty? And what packer
would participate in such a belligerent act of betrayal – almost comparable to that of treason? The lines in the sand had been drawn, and would never be tolerated by Oscar Mayer or any other reputable company – an attitude that was pervasive throughout the industry. But catch a packer short of making his kill, and their unbending principals can always be compromised. So it was, as the NFO began to make some inroads searching out a packer that was vulnerable. However, their uncompromising demands were never acceptable to the main stream major packers. Though the NFO was never successful in establishing themselves as a major player in the marketing arena, they did raise the level of producer influence in the marketplace – the irony of which established my destiny in livestock marketing involvement. Since leaving the inner circle of the meat packing industry, I've dedicated my life to the representation of the livestock producer. I credit this first encounter with the NFO as the premise of opening my eyes to the plight of the American farmer. And I will be forever grateful I had the opportunity of serving this segment of the livestock marketing industry.

What are you allergic to? The list can be long Allergies come in many different forms. Pollen is a common culprit, but people can be allergic to almost anything. Here are a few lesserknown causes of allergies to watch out for: • Beer. A protein in barley (used in many beers) called LTP can cause itchy skin, headaches, and nausea. • Cold. Cold temperatures prompt the skin to produce histamine, an organic nitrogen compound that makes blood vessels contract—and that some people are allergic to (along with similar “chemical mediators” produced when the body feels cold). • Cell phones. Yes, you can have an allergic reaction to your cell phone, or at least the nickel used in it (as well as in belt buckles and watch bands). Nickel can cause a rash that’s frequently mistaken for eczema. • Water. Although it’s rare, aquagenic uticaria is recognized as a condition in which contact with water causes itching, pain, and hives. Even tears can trigger a reaction. • Shoes. Leather, as well as the resins used to treat it and the glues used in footwear manufacturing, can cause inflammation and cracked skin. One in roughly 500 people suffers from the condition and must avoid leather in their clothing.

‘Invisible’ heart attacks pose a stealth risk A heart attack is a terrifying, life-threatening experience. It can be even scarier—and more dangerous—when you don't realize it’s happening, and that’s apparently more common than had been thought. A study of almost 1,000 elderly men and women in Iceland found that 17 percent had suffered an unrecognized heart attack caused by blood vessel blockage that had scarred their hearts, identified by MRI scanning. Fewer than 10 percent of the subjects had experienced any clear symptoms of heart distress. Of the over 150 people who’d had heart attacks they weren’t aware of, 44 had died within eight years. Symptoms of heart attack can be mistaken for heartburn or the flu: chest or stomach pain, shortness of breath, anxiety, lightheadedness, sweating, and nausea. don't take any chances. Even if you’re not reeling with pain from any of these warning signs, getting to an emergency room right away is essential to receiving the care you need.

Scientists test the effects of sugar and caffeine Science You are what you eat, but apparently what you drink is just as important. Two studies illustrate how behavior can be affected by your choice of beverage in certain situations. Scientists at the University of Georgia have found that gargling with sugar water can strengthen self-control. Subjects were given a series of two tests: In the first, they were told to cross out the letter E from the pages of a statistics book—an exercise designed to diminish self-control. This was followed by a test challenging subjects’ ability to correctly identify colors flashed on a screen. (The word “red” might appear in green letters; subjects generally misidentify the color as red more quickly.) Half the subjects swished their mouths out with lemonade sweetened with sugar before the second test; the rest got lemonade mixed with a sugar substitute. Those who got the sugar tended to identify the right color more quickly than the others, suggesting that the sugar helped them control the instinct to read the word rather than see the color.
(about 2-3 cups) 30 minutes before the test implicitly processed positive words more quickly than they did without the drink, but the caffeine had no effect on negative words. The scientists theorize that coffee’s effects on the region of the brain associated with language may be driving the increased recognition.
In a different study conducted at Ruhr University in Germany, caffeine was shown to enhance subjects’ recognition of certain words more quickly—but only words with positive connotations. Subjects who consumed 200 mg of caffeine

Kids can climb in toy maker’s corrals The young sons that inspired Jerry Sims to build a toy cattle-doctoring chute now help Sims design and build toys for others. “It was the best baby sitter ever,” Sims recalls about the chute he made out of wood for his sons. “The boys played with it every day.” Sims raises beef cattle for a living, but on the side, he is The Happy Toy Maker of Happy, Texas. All his creations relate to handling cattle and horses. His toy corral and loading chute is large enough (128-in. perimeter) for small children to get inside to play. Corral panels are 8-in. tall and the adjustable loading chute is 14-in. tall. Made of 3/8-solid steel rod and spot welded, they are practically indestructible, and they can be easily moved on wooden wheels. “The loading chute can be personalized with names, brands and short messages,” Sims says. “We use a computerized plasma torch to personalize each set to your needs.” Sons Wyatt, 11, and Wesley, 13, set up the computer for the torch as well as help cut metal rods for the corrals. While the corrals are usually personalized with brands, some customers request messages such as “Love, from Grandma.” One proud grandpa custom ordered solid panels so he could include each grandchild and their birth dates.
Sims recently developed a 3- by 7-ft. riding arena complete with a roping box that opens with springs, bucking chutes and a return alley. The arena takes more material and time and is more expensive. Call Sims for current prices. “I love making toys,” he adds. “I’ve lived in Happy for 44 years. Everybody kids me about being The Happy Toy Maker. I’m kind of like a big kid that never grew up.” For more information write to Farm Show Follow up, Jerry Sims, P.O. Box 548, Happy, Texas 79042, or call 806-433-2123 or email: thehappytoymaker@midplains. coop, or visit www.thehappytoymaker. com.

Fehr Cab Interiors began as an upholstery service in 1988. As farmers began requesting new insulation for their tractors, we researched and found the original materials for all the different models, and went right to our customers’ farms with our sewing machines, glue pots, and cutting tables. We replaced hundreds of tractor and combine cab interiors in farmers’ machine sheds across the Midwest. Now we have a new install video you can watch for tips to an easier installation. As our customer demand grew, we put together pre-cut, formed, and pre-sewn kits for the most popular models and started shipping the kits to farmers all over the country. Fehr Cab Interior kits are complete with detailed instructions, a diagram, and the best adhesives for applying our parts. Since we also install many cab kits, we know how they need to be made for the best fit. In the last fifteen years, the ag industry has shifted to pre-molded, thermoformed plastic components. Phase Converters provide three-phase power from single-phase lines at a fraction of the installation and operating cost of running three-phase utility lines to your property In 1966 Mr. Colin Johnstone, owner of Johnstone Mfg., needed to run some three phase machines but only had single phase power available. At that time he was designing and manufacturing lighting and scorekeeping equipment for NBC Studios for various game shows, specializing in finding simple solutions to complex requirements. He applied this same expertise to the problem of not having the right power to run his machines. As a result, he developed a phase converter to run his three phase equipment on his existing single phase power. He soon noticed that others had need of phase converters, and by 1968 was producing Phase-A-Matic™ phase converters as a side line to his other endeavors. Sales of phase converters increased so rapidly that by the early 1970’s he was devoting his full time to the manufacture of phase converters. Expanding his staff and facilities, he could barely keep up with the phenomenal growth in sales. All the while, he continued to make refinements in reliability and ease of installation of the phase converters.
About Red Ewald, Inc. Located in Karnes City Texas, the company has been supplying fiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP) tanks and process vessels since 1963. Baldor Electric/PHASE-A-MATIC™ Design The rotary portion of our converter is proprietary, custom built to our specifications by Baldor Electric, one of the largest and most trusted motor manufacturers in the world, with warranty stations nationwide and worldwide. It is a true phase converter and not a modified electric motor as most of our competitors use. Many years of testing, changing and developing the converter in conjunction with Baldor’s engineers has produced a very simple and trouble-free converter with extremely low idle current and low noise level. Many of our customers confirm that our rotary converters are the quietest and most trouble-free available.

Simplicity of design; uses all soldered connections Keeping the design exceptionally simple reduces the risk of electrical connection failure to almost zero since these are some of the most common causes of failure. We use only soldered connections with no mechanical electrical connections like spade clips, terminals or screws which can vibrate loose or corrode over time. There are no start capacitors, relays or contactors with connections which can come loose or arc and weld the contacts causing failure of the contactor and the start capacitors, and perhaps even the rotary converter or your equipment. Because of this we do not have circuit board failures caused by spikes generated by the magnetic contactors as some of our competitors do.
The Rotor The PHASE-A-MATIC™ failure rate is practically zero because the rotors are specifically designed and manufactured for rotary converter use. However, some of our competitors emphasize that rotors often fail. This is because they machine standard electric motors, modifying and thereby weakening standard electric motor rotors, which were not originally designed to be used as a phase converter. Testing before shipment Every converter is performance tested before shipment and assigned a serial number. These records are kept for review if any questions should ever arise about the performance specifications. Stop filter fuel gelling in cold weather
85 watts and is available in several voltages. See our website’s Maintenance section for further technical specifications.
To help prevent diesel/biodiesel fuel gelling in cold weather, E-Tip, Inc. introduces the Universal Fuel Filter Preheater™ that mounts easily to the engine fuel filter. It is just one in an extensive line of products for cold weather starting, security, safety and maintenance.
E-Tip, Inc. also carries the 120v “Peel & Stick” Universal Preheater™ to warm fuel tanks overnight. No cutting or welding, just clean mounting area on fuel tank, peel and stick it on.
Cold conditions often affect fuel flow during start-up and in daily operations. When it is cold enough to cause fuel gelling, over-the-road trucks, heavy machinery, automobiles, generators and other equipment that must operate in low temperatures can become disabled. The gelling plugs the filter, preventing fuel passage. The only solutions are to replace the filter or warm up the fuel until it flows again, requiring towing the equipment to an inside location or bringing a heater to the equipment site. The Universal Fuel Filter Preheater™ offers a simple solution. It is a thin, flexible, silicone/fiberglass heating pad that easily wraps around the metal filterhousing to maintain full contact and evenly transmit heat quickly. It converts the metal filterhousing into the heating element, acting an electric blanket for the fuel filterhousing.
Include both the “Peel & Stick” Universal Preheater™ for engines, hydraulic systems, transmissions, gear boxes, etc. and the Universal Filter Preheater™ in your cold weather package and be assured that you have selected a more effective and complete solution to cold weather-related problems. The Universal Fuel Filter Preheater™ carries a three-year materials and workmanship warranty. A standard 12v Pre-heater is priced at $138. Contact E-Tip, Inc. at 800-530-5064, email sales@etipinc.com, or visit www.etipinc. com for more information.
When it is time to change the filter element, the Universal Fuel Filter Preheater™ is easily released for transfer to the new filterhousing. The 4”x7” Preheater draws A18
From a fuel savings standpoint, mixing propane and diesel might have been yet an even cheaper mix–but propane proved to be more cost prohibitive, and made the engines run hotter.
Spherical bearings are not new, but they are something ‘new’ to the door industry. They are being used in tractor 3-point hitches, planters, drawbars, car suspensions, engines, driveshafts, heavy machinery and many other applications. Schweiss Doors is ‘light years’ ahead of the curve in engineering genius by using these bearings in their large and heavy Red Power lift doors.
Hardy says the mixture of natural gas and diesel is “the way to go”, and his mixer is designed to reduce the high costs of running irrigation engines. In the past few years, several producers using the mixer have reported their fuel cost savings has been very substantial. Hardy said producers have told him they have savings of over $3.00 per hour by using the mixer over straight diesel, and have had gains of 100-150 rpm from their engines. Another benefit they have reported is oil change intervals could be longer with the fuel mix versus the straight diesel.
Realize saving of up to $3.00 per hour, per engine using a Dual Fuel Mixer
Today, things are different. Diesel fuel has tripled in price since 2000. Producers had to do something to make operating irrigation engines more affordable. They started mixing natural gas with diesel, and discovered they saved $80-100 on average per day, per engine. Don Hardy, owner of Don Hardy Fuel Efficient Engine Services in Floydada, Texas, developed a dual fuel mixer for diesel engines to combine natural gas and diesel. The fuel mixing process could then be done economically, by all producers.

when you use superior components, you get a superior product.
Irrigation engines can be more affordable with a fuel mixer
Just ten years ago, diesel fuel was the fuel of choice for irrigation engines. At that time, is was much cheaper than natural gas. Producers started purchasing diesel engines and abandoning natural gas.

hour, and the Case turbo saved a whopping $3.55 per hour.
In the spring of 2007, Hardy and Leon New, an engineer with the Texas Cooperative Extension Service in Amarillo, tested this mixer on three engines in Floyd County. Two engines were Case IH engines–one waas a turbo-charged, and the other engine, a 4-cylinder non-turbo. The third engine was a John Deere 4T100. During the testing, straight diesel was used, followed by a diesel and natural gas mix. The dual fuel outperformed the diesel on all three engines. The Case 4-cylinder had a savings of $1.06 per hour; the John Deere saved $2.40 per

Hoover Diesel Service LLC has the expertise and sources to provide complete power unit packages for the stationary non-road market Gehman Bros. of Terre Hill, Pa, was a lawnmower shop as well as a Petter Diesel dealer. Melvin Hoover joined Gehman Bros in 1973 to work in their diesel division and in 1974 bought the Petter Diesel aspect of the company and renamed the company Hoover Diesel Service. Two years later, in 1976, the business was moved to a larger facility for a higher parts stock and more engine storage space. Distributorship of the Lombardini Diesels was taken on at the same time. In 1985, the Lister company and the Petter Diesel company merged, giving us access to the Lister-Petter line of diesels. With the added capacity of selling both Lombardini and Lister-Petter engines, and after several additional employees, it was decided to build a 9,000 square foot structure in 1986. It included a dedicated engine rebuilding department, larger parts department, and a road service bay. In 1992 we were introduced to the Iveco Industrial dealership, which gave us access to an excellent line of diesels. 2005 brought on two more dealerships, as we added John Deere and Yanmar to our collection. The study went well. Even with late castration, bulls castrated with the original Callicrate Bander went right back to eating and showed minimal signs of stress and pain. Waiting until later to castrate bulls allows the animals the growth benefit associated with natural testosterone. “Today ranchers still, for the most part, castrate early using elastrator bands or a knife. Then they typically implant the calves with a variety of synthetic growth promotants,” said Callicrate. “If they would wait until later they could grow their beef naturally and still have the growth and development benefits of testosterone.”
The Callicrate ‘WEE’ Bander was just released in January of this year and already the response has been very positive. The ‘WEE’ band is tight enough that it shuts off the blood supply and the pain response as well. Studies of high-tension banding have demonstrated that the complete negation of blood flow triggers a natural analgesic effect that blocks pain while minimizing swelling and related complications. “Many ranchers apply an elastrator ring, then drive over the hill and don’t notice what happens next,” he said. “Because elastrator rings are not tight enough, the animals experience pain until swelling finally blocks the blood flow and the pain eventually subsides.” Until that happens, Callicrate said, “these young animals lay on their side in pain, they roll and they paddle. It’s particularly noticeable in lambs and goats. They do a lot of vocalizing. They are in severe pain for a prolonged period of time.” Most people who raise livestock really do care about their animals and want to make sure they are treated humanely, The new Callicrate ‘WEE’ Bander provides another tool for allowing better humane care while improving financial returns.
But, after years of promoting delayed castration, he began to realize he wouldn’t convince many more ranchers to delay their castration practices. It was a tradition that was hard to break.
Just like the original Callicrate Bander, the ‘Wee’ Bander also works on tails and horns. “If it fits through the triangular loop opening, it is the right size,” said Callicrate.
“I recalled that Temple Grandin mentioned that one of the most stressful things you could do to an animal was the use of elastrator rings. They simply don’t get tight enough. The animal swells into it. There was concern about the negative effects this procedure had on vulnerable young animals working to develop their immune systems. A knife was considered the second most stressful way to handle them,” Callicrate said.
The Callicrate ‘WEE’ Bander is consistent with the Callicrate method for hightension banding and is the most stressfree castration option on the market. It is also easy for the person performing the operation. After positioning the loop around the testicles, the loop is released securing the band firmly in place above the testicles. Then a pull handle is retracted applying the proper tension.
Those comments by Grandin, stayed in the back of Callicrate’s mind for over a decade. Recalling Temple’s comment about how the elastrator ring didn’t provide sufficient tension for complete ligation, a problem the Callicrate Bander finally solved in 1994, he decided to work on a more humane method of castration for young animals that would replace the highly stressful elastrator ring.
Both banders are available at animal health and ranching supply stores. For more information, check out their web site www.CallicrateBanders.com or call 1-800858-5974.
Callicrate was explaining the elastrator ring dilemma to friend, Roy Harbach, an experienced aerospace manufacturing engineer. Roy came up with a few ideas, and between them, the Callicrate ‘WEE’ Bander was invented. “We’re talking very young animals. The new Callicrate ‘WEE’ Bander is designed for newborn calves, sheep and goats, up to approximately three weeks of age. It’s for those producers who want to castrate early,” he explained.
