Bonnie Mohr A visit to the Bonnie Mohr Studio is a bit different than one to other fine art galleries. Like other studios, you will find the usual artist originals, art prints and note cards. What makes this studio unique is that you will also find one of Bonnie's favorite art subjects — the dairy cow. Live cows are generally not allowed in the studio, which is located on the Mohr farm, but visitors will see them lining the driveway to the studio in rural Glencoe, MN.
Bonnie and her husband, John, both grew up on dairy farms in southern Minnesota. They married in 1983, and after several years of working in the Minneapolis area, they used the money they saved to invest in their dream of owning their own farm and genetics business, Glenmark Genetics. It was about that time when Bonnie became serious about her God-given ability to re-create onto canvas the things in life she so loves and respects. Nearly two decades and five Mohr children later, the studio is now staffed by an office manager, a finance manager, a marketing person and a "just down the road" neighbor who is the shipping specialist. Bonnie recently completed the "Ideal Holstein Cow" and "Ideal Holstein Bull" pieces, which she was commissioned to paint by the
National Holstein Association. The Ideal Holstein Cow and Bull have not been updated since the 1970s, and in June, she unveiled the "36 by "48" canvases at the National Holstein Convention in Missouri. Earlier this year, Bonnie was also commissioned by the Minnesota FFA Foundation to paint the "We Live to Share" piece to launch the Minnesota FFA Foundation Legacy Club. Four Critical Steps to Maximizing Corn Quality after a Challenging Growing Season This Year More than Ever, Manage Grain Quality from Harvest through Storage.
nificantly reduces the mold levels. Once dried, cool the grain as quickly as possible to 50 degrees or below for the best storability. Like a refrigerator, grain can be stored for much longer time periods when the temperature and moisture levels inside the bin are optimal. The table below shows the maximum amount of time corn can be stored (in days) based on grain temperature and moisture, and reinforces the importance of the cooling and drying processes.
Drop storage moisture percentage. Woodruff recommends dropping the storage moisture percentage by ½ to 1 percentage point this season, which means for many operations drying down to 14.5% or 14%. This helps to increase the length of time the grain can be stored, since lower moisture levels reduce mold growth. Do not consider trying to store grain above 14.5% moisture this year unless you are in an area where there was no drought and no mold issues.

The 2012 growing season has been synonymous with challenge. The many different faces of extreme weather have come together to negatively impact the quantity and quality of corn that will be harvested this fall. While many of these factors alone can be detrimental to a corn crop, when they happen at the same time the result can be a complete crop loss if not handled properly. “This year has been particularly challenging for growers, as the drought has caused higher levels of mold in the corn being harvested,” explains Gary Woodruff, Grain Conditioning Technology Manager with Grain Systems Incorporated. “Alongside the drought, warmer weather at harvest means the temperature inside the bin is higher than normal. When these two factors are combined, the spread of mold is exception-
ally high, and can translate to significant losses of stored corn and, ultimately, farmers’ profits. Everyone putting grain in a bin must be vigilantly proactive this year to avoid devastating losses.” While the weather conditions can’t be controlled, farmers must manage the environment in which the corn crop is harvested and stored, says Woodruff. To best manage this atypical season, he recommends the following tips to ensure the highest-quality grain can be marketed:
Dry quickly, cool quickly. Mold populations can grow 6% per hour at 80 degrees in the truck or wet bin. Woodruff recommends using a high-temperature dryer and raising the temperature to 120 degrees Fahrenheit or higher, which sig-

University experts are encouraging farmers to start harvesting earlier this growing season at above 25% harvest moisture, with some recommending starting as early as 30% harvest moisture. Additional drying will be needed, which means a greater investment in fuel, but this can be justified, says Woodruff. He says growers will realize that the cost of
3 to 5 bushels of corn can cover the additional fuel to dry an entire acre of grain at 25% harvest moisture. Field losses will escalate quickly as stalk quality declines leaving many more bushels in the field. By making the proper investment you can rest assured more high-quality corn can be marketed.
Plan ahead for potential challenges. Woodruff warns that if you are unable to manage the corn crop with proper drying, cooling and storage practices, be prepared to take your grain quickly or even directly to the elevator. Marketing the corn quickly will allow it to be delivered to the elevator before the quality declines and the grain could possibly be rejected due to mold. If you have more bins than crop this year, consider still using them all but reducing the grain depth. «What's New Featherlite launches aluminum fuel trailer to meet growing demand of changing farmer
Equipment Technologies unveils 2013 Apache sprayers and all-new Plus II Package
Best known in the farming industry for their livestock trailers, Featherlite has launched a new fuel trailer that aims to help make farming operations run more efficiently, especially as farming continues to evolve. The new Model 1570 is a compact trailer that can be easily transported to fields to fuel and service equipment on site, saving time and expenses.
Equipment Technologies (ET) recently announced the rollout of their 2013 line of Apache sprayers and the new Plus II Package.
According to the USDA’s ‘The Changing Organization of U.S. Farming’ report published in December 2011, farm production has shifted to larger farms, while the number of smaller, commercial farms has declined. “This often means farmers are farming a larger number of acres and also often farming further away from home,” Randy Lewis, Featherlite national sales manager, said. This sentiment is backed by Central Iowa Featherlite Trailer Sales Owner Brian Gonder. “Today’s farmer is a mobile farmer,” Gonder said. “Not that many years ago, people farmed within a few miles of their home. Today it’s not uncommon to farm many miles away.” In fact, he has local customers near their Featherlite dealership in Bondurant, Iowa, that even farm as far away as South Dakota and Minnesota.
“For over 15 years, the Apache self-propelled sprayer has been known for its affordability, reliability and ability to take on any terrain. Featherlite’s Model 1570 is available with two fuel tank sizes, 550 or 760 gallons, with customization available to accommodate larger sizes as well. It also includes a gasoline powered transfer pump, 25 foot long retractable hose reel with fuel nozzle, fuel filter, drain plug and enclosed compartment with lockable doors. An option for a rear compartment with an air compressor/generator or with just additional space for tools and parts is also available. “What we feel separates Featherlite from other similar models out in the market is our aluminum construction,” Lewis said. “They are lighter, easier to tow, more durable and over the long haul, we feel a wiser investment."

Introducing the all-new Plus II Package: The Apache Plus returns with a vengeance. New for 2013, the Plus II Package results in maximum efficiency and power. Like its predecessor, the Plus II is for growers who want the highest horsepower available. Now, growers can choose to get a 2013 AS1020 or AS1220 with a staggering 275 hp Cummins engine and a heavier duty differential from JCB to accommodate the increase in power to the ground. The difference just isn’t under the hood. All Plus II sprayers come standard with a 50” crop clearance and 18” drop box all gear final drive. The Plus II stands out among the other Apache sprayers with standard black wheels and hood stripes. ________________________________________
New Euro/Global to John Deere 600/700 Adapter from Worksaver Worksaver, Inc. offers a new adapter which allows Euro/ Global loaders to interface with attachments designed for John Deere 600/700 series quick attach system. This adapter is engineered to prepare loaders to accept John Deere 600/700 buckets and attachments. The Euro/Global interface is featured on one side while the John Deere 600/700 Series interface is on the other. The adapter features an all welded design and maximum capacity of 5,000 lbs.
In Gonder’s business, he estimates that 80 to 85 percent of his customers grow crops and raise livestock both. “It was a natural fit with our existing livestock trailers to expand our product line to meet this growing demand,” Lewis said. “This trailer saves farmers from having to leave the field to fuel up. Instead they can fuel their equipment right in the field.” In addition to the agricultural uses, there are several other commercial applications as well, including construction equipment on work sites or in Gonder’s case, he has sold two units to a helicopter crop spraying business.

The threshing system on the Versatile RT490 is unique, featuring a rotating concave rotary system. A 360° concave counter rotates to the rotor for increased capacity, better productivity and reduced loss. This concave ensures that the entire thresher and separator area is utilized. A 4-stage feeder house with a unique inclined chamber replaces the traditional feeder housing with four feeding beaters, providing a considerable increase in processing stability and combine productivity by allowing a uniform layer of material to enter the rotor. The 340 bu. grain tank features standard hopper extensions that are controlled from the cab for transportation or storage.
Larger than previous models, the Nutri-Placer 920 offers a choice of either a 1,650-gallon or 2,050-gallon tank, so producers can work longer before filling up. The all-new tank chassis centers the tank over the axle for consistent positive tongue weight whether the tank is loaded or empty. Additionally, a low center of gravity is created, offering more stability as producers go over bumps and hills in the field. The Nutri-Placer 920 also offers overall improved transportability with an innovative X-Wing frame design that folds for narrow transportation width and low transportation height, so it can be easily transported when the closest field is a few miles away. Unlike standard transmissions, which have a distinct number of gear ratios, a CVT has an infinite number of gear ratios, which allows the engine to always run at its most efficient speed – regardless of ground speed. And unlike hydrostatic transmissions that depend on speed for higher torque, a CVT is more efficient when pulling a load. Unload Simplified To make on-the-go unload more comfortable and safer as header widths continue to grow, Case IH has added new options to its auger offerings. In addition to the two fixed auger options that extend up to 28 feet, 9 inches, two folding auger options are now available: a 28-foot-9-inch auger that folds at a 90-degree angle and a 34-foot auger that folds at a 135-degree angle. «What's New Mitas introduces its premium American product lines Mitas recently introduced its premium product line sold in North America to accommodate demands from the farming community with locally made products manufactured at its Iowan radial farm tire factory. From September 1, all Mitasmade premium tires delivered to U.S. farmers will bear the Mitas brand name. These tires are based on Continental agricultural tires, which Mitas has made under license since 2004. “The new Mitas premium lines focus on tire sizes that the American farmers demand,” said Neil Rayson, who is responsible for sales in North America. “Mitas is extending the dealer network, growing sales to original equipment manufacturers and improving Mitas’ premium warranty conditions. The simplified brand offer will help farmers choose the right tire. Now, nine Mitas-branded lines are designated as premium because they offer improved benefits to the farmer.” These include, for example, the Super Flexion Tire (SFT). Moving on Moving the Farm Dear Michael: In a recent article, you discussed different methods for transferring our farm to a farming son while keeping the other children happy. You were pretty general about these ideas and promised to be more specific in this article. Can you give us specific ideas about what things we can do? We've heard everything from trusts to life estates to 'just sell the farm to him', but we're never sure of what is the correct thing to do. Maybe we get too much information. - Overloaded on Info. Dear Overloaded: There are a number of things you can look in to regarding your desires and needs. Above, you've listed some of the things I've seen people use in the past – although I don't see people take the ideas far enough. For example, a life estate isn't a bad way to go, but just a transfer of deed wouldn't go far enough if it were my land. I'd have a life estate deed with either an agreement with my
children how the land will be handled past my death, or written directly into the deed transfer document (quitclaim) itself. If I do a conditional transfer, then my children will have to sign to accept the conditions I have put upon the land. Such things might consist of "if you sell the land, you have to give first option to your siblings" or "upon my (our) death, you must rent the land to your farming sibling at this rate". This rate might be county average or a percentage – either higher or lower – of one hundred percent of the county average. For example, "the rent will be no more than 125% of the county average for like land in _______ (fill in the blank) County". I can dream up any number of conditions I want on my deed, and if my kids sign for those terms and I register my deed they have to follow those terms and conditions. That's what I would do. Another thing I might do if I had a farming child is set it up so that my kids would have some reason to get along someday. I might have my attorney put into my life estate deed that I am transferring my land to my farming child subject to the "all rents received from my child shall be attributed to the purchase price of this land stated herein" and then show a number or price for the land. Upon my death, my farming child would have to pay the difference between the original purchase price listed in the deed less any rents he paid to me or my wife over my lifetime. I might even decide he gets a share of the remaining value for his own inheritance. Again, I need to make sure I set this up with him, have an attorney draft the agreement and/or the deed and then he

What happens if a son, who's farming, wants to buy the farmland? You can say, "Okay, here's what I want for my land: $____ amount of dollars. You pay me this much per year in income and every few years when I feel you've paid for this quarter or eighty or section, I'll give you the deed for that land. However, to keep my income the same, I might say, 'Well, now you get to buy the next piece but, of course, the price has gone up a bit." If I pace myself right, I should run out of land about the same time I run out of life. At the very least, I've moved these assets out of my estate, my son can show he paid for them, and the rest of the family won't have anything to argue about. Everybody always asks for my opinion of wills, or trusts, and any other type of legal instrument. My reply is, "They're all just tools in the shed, and until you tell me what it is you'd like to accomplish, don't worry about the tool you'll need." More importantly is you need to spill your beans out, no matter how outlandish it might seem to you. Like what you'd really like to see happen if you died today, and then let the appropriate professionals design a plan that does exactly that for you. If you're working with the right people, they'll figure out a way to make things work out the way you want them. The plan might change over the years, but that's planning for anything in general. ________________________________________

We choose whether or not to retaliate. We choose to behave with character. We choose to exhibit what we want others to see in our actions. Anger does little to heal us. Anger raises our blood pressure. It compromises our immune system. It can lead to long term hatred and foment violence.

It is healthier to get our feelings of revenge out by talking about them with people whom we trust as supporters. But we should be careful to not talk about the accusations to others who will repeat them.
Making False Accusations Easier To Handle Most of us have been the object of false accusations one time or another during our lives. Few deeds hurt more than being accused of something we didn’t do or having our reputation trashed unfairly. False accusations don’t have to wound us to our core. Indeed, they can provide opportunities to learn about ourselves, to build character, and to model respectable behavior for others to emulate.
False accusations occur regularly in the workplace, in school, within extended families and many social groups. In the workplace false accusations often involve rumor mongering among fellow employees, rivals seeking to discredit a boss or coworker, or outright mobbing designed to destroy the reputation of an employee and perhaps to get that person to leave the employment setting. When false accusations take the form of mobbing or bullying in the workplace, such actions are illegal in most European countries. Many U.S. jurisdictions and Canadian provinces have enacted anti-mobbing or anti-bullying statutes. Wrongful dismissal suits are becoming commonplace when false accusations in the employment setting lead to job termination. I have observed false accusations among farm people. One or more prospective farm renters started a campaign of false rumors about the current lessee of a desirable farm property by raising questions about the lessee’s capacity to pay his bills so that the widow who owned the land might lease it to another renter.
Bullying by children has been identified as a factor contributing to violence by school kids. Often the bullying begins with the propagation of falsehoods by peers.
Participating in community events and volunteer work build our image of remaining confident and contributive.
Parents and caretakers should be particularly attuned to kids’ passing along falsehoods about another child. Rumor mongering should not be considered an acceptable part of the development of social competence by children as they approach teenage or when they are adolescents. Most schools and many other settings that involve supervision of children have adopted anti-bullying policies. Making false accusations is as wrong for children as for adults. Children are more vulnerable because they usually lack the skills to deal with false rumors.
How can we deal with false accusations? False accusations are difficult to defend against. If we confront the persons we think are spreading the falsehoods, they usually deny their actions. Most persons are unfazed by confrontations meant to cause them to cease their false accusations. Often they attack even more vehemently and secretively.
The best defense is to not act defensive. To continue to behave positively and with dignity ultimately prevails. While we often fear that others will believe the false accusations, others nearly always choose to believe what they observe. Our actions speak loudly. Remaining unfazed ourselves and moving along to do our best usually invalidate the false accusations and the accusers as well. We have to rise above our anger and desires for revenge. We can’t control the false accuser. We are in control of ourselves only.

The 'Tally' Sheet On my walk this afternoon, I caught sight of some bright yellow and red leaves already turned on the edge of a Badland ravine, and observed a coyote loping along. It was just out, looking around. My Cup runneth over!
As we prepare to celebrate the coming Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday seasons, this old saying keeps running through my mind: "Let us be Grateful and Thankful for what we have today for none of us knows what tomorrow may bring!" I like the idea of a 'tally sheet', used by ranchers here on the plains for many years to add up expenses and income for the year. But, my 'tally' is of things and people to be grateful for in my life, and to teach my children and others that I come into contact with to 'count the blessings' you have and enjoy. Don't spend time concentrating on the 'have's' that abound in your life and on the "I wish I had's" – especially in these tough economic times. As this year's meager harvest draws to a close (or with a thump), we all survived another year. The crops were not what most of us had hoped for, but we take what we can get, and salvage anything that managed to grow in the awful depths of the drought in the summer just past. The deer and wild turkeys got all of my tomatoes, but we did manage to save the pumpkins and squash, with enough to even share with family and friends. I had planted the pumpkins for a friend of mine's little pre-schoolers, and discovered that if I watered the garden overnight, the deer kept out! We have enough pumpkins for the kids and then some. I am so very grateful.
I am grateful to be able to add to my 'tally sheet' that we have the freedom to worship as we please, and: * I am thankful for those who came before us who gave us the freedom to vote without interference in our local and national elections;
My old-fashioned blue Hubbard squash were attacked by the deer, but we still have some – more than enough for family and friends, and that is a blessing for sure.
* I am also grateful for the generosity of my neighbors who share their chubby-cheeked babies, just learning to smile and walk so I can play with them;
I love the early morning hours – especially the sunrise, and this morning the sun was a bright red orb on the edge of the sky. I'd never seen a red sun before. It was absolutely gorgeous when I went to the chicken house to give the biddies their morning drink of water. I am grateful for the ability to see and enjoy the beauty of nature here in the country.
* I am grateful for the toddlers, pre-schoolers and little ones just learning to read, draw and explore their worlds, sharing their fun of learning with me. I learn as much as they do;
When I walked back toward the house, a flock of Canadian geese was honking and calling to one another as they passed by on their journey south for the winter. The deer and their babies were grazing in the field to the west of the house, and since they are used to me tromping around, they just look up as I walk to the garden. The bittersweet vine I have planted in the yard has some berries on it. Wreath decorating possibilities? Perhaps, if I can keep the kittens from playing with them...

Make Your Own Pumpkin Seed Snacks, Dog Beds, Air Freshener and More MAKE-IT-YOURSELF PUMPKIN SEED SNACKS! Those expensive bags of toasted pumpkin seed snacks are so easy to make for yourself at home. They cost a lot of money and you truly can do it - it's simple. Here's how: • Cut out the top of a fresh pumpkin and scoop out the seeds and strings into a bowl of water. Wash the seeds and discard the strings and fiber (this goes in my chicken bucket, but could also be put in the compost pile).
• Drain the washed seeds and put back into a bucket or bowl and pour one quart of water mixed with one cup of salt over the seeds, or make enough solution to cover the seeds you have. Let stand overnight.

• The next day, drain off the salt water and oil a jelly roll pan or a cookie sheet with sides. Pour in the soaked seeds and put in the oven at 250° and bake them until the seeds are the color of light brown toast. (I give them a stir every once in a while.)
I dry orange, lemon and apple peelings during the year on a cookie sheet lined with a paper towel. It sits on top of the refrigerator where it's nice and warm and the stuff dries quite well.
• Cool and enjoy; the entire seed is edible, so no shells to pick up. I take the cleaned out pumpkin, fill it with a piece of floral foam, soak the foam and arrange fresh flowers in it for a table decoration. If you are afraid of leakage, insert a small vase in the pumpkin and fill it with flowers. Or, I split the pumpkin, put it on a cookie sheet with sides and a little water and bake split side down in the oven until it's very soft. I then flip the halves over, scoop out the flesh and bake fresh pumpkin pie, cookies or cake. The cooked pumpkin can be frozen in bags for use over the winter – instead of buying the canned stuff!

To make a batch, you would need about 1-1/2 cups each of the dried peelings and mix that with the following: - 1 Tablespoon of WHOLE allspice - 3 Tablespoons of WHOLE cloves - 2 small cinnamon sticks, broken into smaller pieces (I use the hammer on these) - Several STAR ANISE (if you have them, but if not, it still smells really good without) Break up the dried peelings into smaller pieces, mix with the spices and store in a glass jar until needed.

To use: put a spoonful or two in a pan on the stove and heat to scent the air, or use one of those electric 'simmer pots' that can be purchased almost anywhere.

(I take a quart jar of this mix to the Black Hills Stock Show every year and have a simmer pot going in my booth when we are open. People follow their noses to the scent and can't believe something so simple can smell so good. And, I actually use year-old, or older spices for all this. It's a good way to clean out the cupboard!)
A FOAM MATTRESS FOR THE POOCH A reader sent in a hint about her "make-itmyself" doggie beds. She has several elderly dogs since she does rescue work. (May God Bless her for this!) Dog beds are expensive, but she had gone to a yard sale and found a foam mattress topper for $10 and proceeded to cut it into chunks to fit into dog beds. She says they work quite well, keeping the dogs comfortable, and after two years' time are still in very good condition. She said that the cost of four 'new' dog beds would have been over $200, so she's saved a good amount of money and her furry friends are sleeping like kings!

JUICE LID ORNAMENTS A reader reminded me that kids need to "Do things with their hands – besides play video games!" She suggested that parents could have the kids make inexpensive Christmas ornaments for grandparents with nothing more than the lids from the frozen juice you prepare for breakfast, a nail, and some odds and ends. Her instructions: * Make a star, Christmas ball or any other pattern you choose to fit the inside of the lid from a piece of paper, and tape it to the lid. Using an old breadboard or piece of scrap board, a nail and a small tack hammer, let the kids poke holes around the pattern using the nail and hammer. * Glue a piece of felt or fabric on the back of the lid to prevent scratches, and then let the kids decorate the edge of the lid with lace, left-over chunks of fat yarn, little colored buttons, odds and ends of rick-rack from Grandma's sewing basket, twisted pieces of colored paper – anything that the kids can dream up.
* Use the nail to poke a hole at the top of the ornament to put a piece of yarn, ribbon or twine through to make a hanger, and you're finished!

Hydronic Radiant Floor Heat 101 • PART TWO The popularity of radiant floor heat and sales are rising each year, and more and more consumers are adding radiant floor heating systems to their projects and improvements. Radiant floor heat creates some questions when first starting. In this article series, I will explain the key points of radiant floor heat, and give you the confidence to start including radiant floor heat in your projects. –by LES GRAHAM
Can I place the tubing in the sand below the concrete? Yes and no! There are some advantages to placing the tubing in sand below the concrete. Just be careful that you don’t get the tubing too deep in the sand. We had one job where the tubing was at the bottom of 15’’ of sand. It did not work well, partly because it was off peak electric and 15’’ of sand gets too dry and doesn't conduct heat well. Some contractors prefer a couple inches of sand below the concrete to place the tubing in – this allows the troweling of the concrete to be more manageable. The sand also protects the tubing if there is a major crack/ shift in the concrete.
•
Ratings: European quality 145 PSI at 203 degrees or Asian quality 125 PSI at 180 degrees.
•
Ease of lay out. It bends like soft copper and stays where you put it.
•
Less fasteners are needed.
•
All advantages of both plastic and metal tubing.
•
The best coefficient of linear thermal expansion. In other words it does not try to grow very much in length when you start running warm fluid through it.
•
Kinked tubing - if severe, replace roll or splice.
•
Price: middle of the road.

What if the concrete cracks?

The normal cracks that appear in all concrete are not really a threat. I have heard of a couple shifting cracks that have pinched off a loop over the years; however, this is an extremely rare occurrence. This type of shifting crack is from poor compaction of the base. On most jobs, if you were to lose one loop from a crack, the other loops will carry the load.
•
The barrier is usually located on the outside of the tubing. The oxygen barrier is NOT protected from sun, water and abrasion.
What type of tubing is used in the concrete?
•
Ratings: 100 PSI at 180 degrees.
•
Ease of layout – Pex has a memory; it is always trying to recoil itself.
•
Additional fasteners needed.
•
Coefficient of linear thermal expansion is poor compared to Pex-Al-Pex.
They both work and are both considered “radiant floor heat”. I feel the hydronic tubing is the better choice over electric mats. Let’s take a look at why: •
With hydronic tubing you can hook up to multiple heat sources; natural gas, L.P. gas, fuel oil, ground source, electric boilers, bio-mass burners, wood boilers, corn boilers, solar, etc.
•
With electric mats you are committed to the electric company.
•
The track record related to longevity and performance of tubing in concrete is far better than electric mats.
What size tubing is used? The two most common sizes are ½’’ and 5/8’’. Many times this decision comes down to someone’s opinion. Most people assume 5/8’’ does a lot better job compared to ½’’.
You can use a Pex-Al-Pex or a Pex tubing. Let’s look at the differences between the two options. (FYI: the word Pex in both types of tubing is an abbreviation for cross linked poly-ethylene.)
•
Kinked tubing – depends on the brand of Pex. Some you need to replace the roll or splice, others you heat up to a certain temperature and it will go back to its original form.
Pex-Al-Pex or Pex-Aluminum-Pex features:
Some installers prefer to use ½’’ and others 5/8’’. There are times when the layout of trench drains and manifold locations force the designer into the 5/8’’ tubing. With 5/8’’ you can go up to 450 foot loops, ½’’ is 330 foot loops maximum.
•
Price: All over the place, many highs and lows. (Be careful – some Pex on the market has zero oxygen barrier!)
There is very little difference between ½’’ and 5/8’’ tubing. In fact, it is common to install both sizes using the same on center spacing.
(This style of tubing has an aluminum sleeve centered between two layers of Pex.) •
100% oxygen barrier (the aluminum sleeve).
•
The oxygen barrier is protected (centered between the layers of Pex).
•
Better heat transfer because of the aluminum sleeve.
What is an oxygen barrier? An oxygen barrier prevents oxygen from penetrating through the wall of the plastic tubing and entering into the boiler solution. And yes, oxygen can penetrate the wall even

My response is, “Use it or lose it.” As I purge clutter, I challenge myself that if I continue to keep something in my life that I can’t let go of because it tugs at me, I must put it to its intended purpose soon, or, once and for all, send it out the door. This year I weed out clutter with a pen and paper in hand. I am going to write down the items and the corresponding good intentions that make me keep them. Items on the list that are still hanging on the next time I weed out must go.

Don’t fret this fall, you can continue your campaign against clutter even when you get discouraged. Every year, several times per year, it seems like household clutter catches up with me. It is an unending process. That is okay. That is just the way it is. The process keeps us in shape and alert. Each time I remove clutter, I get better at it, and you can too. When I participate alertly in the process, I learn new tactics and techniques. The process goes more smoothly. I try a different angle. One fall, I created a new mantra and a new process to dig through closets, drawers, and cupboards: “Use it or lose it.” And, “Write it down.”

MAINTENANCE HOW-TO: Hay Equipment
Haying equipment end-of-season inspection and maintenance checklists After a long summer in the hayfield, it’s tempting to simply back haying equipment into the shed for the winter without giving it a second thought. However, conducting a thorough end-of-season inspection and writing down maintenance needs while they are still top of mind can be time well spent. That’s the advice of Dean Morrell, product marketing manager for Hesston by Massey Ferguson® hay products and 35-year-veteran of the quality hay business. “A full end-of-season visual inspection helps ensure you’re well prepared to complete needed repair and maintenance projects during winter downtime,” says Morrell. “Months down the road it can be hard to remember that noise you wanted to check out before next season. By writing it down, you have a big head start on maintenance that will leave your equipment in top condition, ready for another productive season.” Good machine care, with proper maintenance and repair not only helps ensure proper operation and long life, it helps maintain resale value, Morrell points out. A clean machine simplifies fall maintenance and inspection. It also helps minimize rust which can start where dirt and moisture collect on a machine. Begin with removing dirt, dust and hay debris by sweeping the machine or using high-pressure air or a power washer. While balers often carry the most dirt and hay material, it’s best to use air when cleaning balers because of their many moving parts and opportunities to create rust. High-pressure washing is best for cleaning mower or conditioner cutter bars. Rakes as well as selfpropelled and pull-type windrowers can be pressure-washed to remove dirt, dust and hay debris.
A few simple steps before storing hay equipment for the winter are keys to machine performance and long life. •
Check and blow dirt and debris from radiators. On machines with “smart” reversing fans such as the V-Cool™ system found on Hesston WR Series self-propelled windrowers, radiator screens already should be clean and free of dirt and hay.
Baler checklist •
Sweep or use air pressure to remove dirt, dust and hay debris. Aggressive washing should be avoided to reduce the opportunity for rust.

Grease all grease zerks on wear points.
•
Change hydraulic-system filters.
•
After changing hydraulic filters, run the machine to purge air from the system and reduce the opportunity for condensation to form during the winter.
•
Check gearbox fluid levels and change as recommended in the operator’s manual.
•
Replace broken pickup tines.
Windrower checklist
•
Oil chains before placing in storage.
•
Begin your inspection at the header, looking for wear and components which should be replaced.
•
On round balers, inspect belts for checking and other wear. Loosen belt tensioners so they are not sitting under full tension through the winter.
•
For sickle-bar headers, replace cutter bar teeth and ledger plates. Replace the guards once yearly when storing machines or add this to your list for completion during winter.
Although some maintenance tasks can be deferred until winter, at a minimum, grease machines and change oil and filters before parking. Balers and selfpropelled windrowers typically require the most care before going into winter storage. Rakes generally require minimal maintenance, but it’s still important to give them the attention they need before storing for the winter, says Morrell. He offers these “quick tips” for end-of-season maintenance and reminds producers to follow the operator’s manual and manufacturer’s recommendations.
•
On disk mowers, replace knives and rotate or replace worn turtles covering the knives.
Rake checklist •
Clean the rake to remove dirt, dust and hay debris.

God Gives Us the Forgiveness of Sins, Life and Salvation Through Baptism Let's step back a few thousand years in history, about 3 to 4 thousand years ago, just as Moses was transferring leadership to Joshua (around the time of Joshua 3 in the Bible). We can learn a lot from history, and what God was trying to teach us with His inspired Word. We live in a world where I guess is about half of America, and more than three-quarters of the rest of the world wouldn't claim the Bible to be truthful. I am blessed to have 100% confidence that the whole Bible is the truth. Whether or not you believe the word of the Bible to be true, please read on as I relay the story of our history, as God inspired Joshua to write it. Moses had just led the Children of Israel out of bondage in Egypt, crossing the Red Sea into the Wilderness for about 40 years. Because of their unfaithfulness to God, Moses and the older Israelites where not going to see the Promised land. This was precursor for all of us that if we are not going to stay faithful to Him, we too will not see the promised land – which of course, is Heaven! That's a fair warning from over three thousand years ago that still stands today. There are only two endings for life on Earth: Heaven or Hell. Meanwhile, the story gets better: God chose to have His presence known at that time with the Ark of the Covenant. The Ark was adorned with Cherubim and Serifim on top. Inside, was the tablets of the Law – the 10 commandments – and Aaron's rod, that He held up to part the waters of the Red Sea as they were escaping Egypt. God's presence, the Ark of the Covenant (which was carried by the Priests), and the Levites went out in front leadership of the Israelites by about 10 football fields, until they reached the Jordan River. There, God commanded the Priests to put their feet into the Jordan, which was at flood stage. What miracle happened? God parted the Jordan river while the Children of Israel crossed. The Priests who were holding the Ark of the Covenant stood in the middle of the river on dry ground until they all had passed through. They then followed to the other side, and as soon as they had stepped out of the riverbed it started flowing again. All the other nations living in the Promised land heard of the miracle of God, and their hearts melted. They no longer had courage to fight the Israelites. And why not? their false God had no power to part the Red Sea or the Jordan River. This just showed what an awesome and allpowerful God we have, who continuously blesses us with His presence and gifts. He has promised to be with us if we pray for His help. And if we push Him out of the schools, He will NOVEMBER 20 12
leave. A teacher told me the other day, "God will never be out of our schools – just watch all the kids pray before a test!" Too bad it takes these dire circumstances to ask God for help. He wants to be a part of our daily life. Back to the story: After the children of Israel passed through the Jordan, God told Joshua to have 12 people gather 12 rocks from where the Priests stood with the Ark of the Covenant in the bottom of the riverbed, to be a memorial to the people of Israel forever. This was a reminder that God can and will work great things through His believers. They were also to circumcise all the males in the Children of Israel, because they had not circumcised anyone since they had left Egypt. Circumcision in the Old Testament was to recognize oneself as a Child of God, just like Baptism does in the New Testament. Where circumcision is just an outward act that cannot save one in itself, baptism in the New Testament saves. Through baptism, God gives us the forgiveness of sins, life and salvation. Just as the children of Israel were given freedom to the promised land by God's parting of the waters, we also have access to the Promised land through Baptism. We are made clean and saved by God! We are saved not by anything we do, but purely by God's grace, taught to us over 3,000 years ago. And the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob is still with us blessing us with His presence, giving us everything we need to prepare for our Promised land. The promised land is Heaven. But if you believe in Jesus Christ as your Savior, you already are an heir to the promised land. This began (or begins) at your baptism.
5 Tell-tale signs of burnout Are you working too long and too hard? Could you achieve more by doing less? Professional athletes are susceptible to overtraining – thinking that they must run another mile, do more stairs or do one more set. But there is a narrow band that the athlete must train within in order to operate at peak performance. If they fall below this line, then they are not physically prepared enough. If they rise above it, then they risk physical exhaustion and injury. Are you any different from an athlete who needs to perform at your peak? Jim Loehr and Tony Schwartz first introduced us to the term "corporate athlete" in their book, "The Power of Full Engagement." They argue that the corporate demands placed on us to work more, do more and to operate at a constant level of peak performance requires us to think and train like athletes. That means managing our energy more effectively and not succumbing to overtraining (which causes us to do more and more and yet get less and less). How do you know if you are "overtraining" and need to take a break? Here are five common symptoms of doing too much and not operating at peak performance: 1. Hopelessness. When you are feeling burned out, the optimism and goal planning for the future you once felt are replaced with apathy, pessimism and just a general feeling that tomorrow will not be better than today. It's hard to get motivated when nothing seems to matter. 2. Exhaustion. If you find yourself downing ever-increasing amounts of coffee and energy shots just to stay conscious, chances are you're working too hard and need a break. Exhaustion occurs when the body doesn't have sufficient ability to rest and recuperate. Caffeine is just a Band-Aid – it's covering up the fact that something is wrong. You shouldn't need 500 mg of caffeine to make it through the day. This is a tell-tale sign that you are performing beyond your limits. 3. Lack of focus. Another way to tell when you are pushing beyond your limits is when you are simply unable to focus on one thing at a time. Often this will creep up at home as well when you find that it's more and more difficult to engage your children or spouse without feeling compelled to text or email. If you find that you are having more and more difficulty working on a project or communicating with your family without getting sidetracked, it's time to disengage from work for a while. 4. Irritability. If you are on edge and overreacting to every little issue, it's a sign that you have nothing left in the tank -- every bit of energy that you had for humor, compassion and creativity is gone, and all that remains is blame, contempt and frustration. If this describes you, it's time to do yourself (and your colleagues!) a favor and refill the tank. 5. Physical illness. Athletes are prone to injury when they overtrain, but while it's unlikely you will tear a muscle during your next presentation, you may experience physical maladies if you've been working too hard and too long. Common physical problems include headaches, digestion problems, back or neck pain, and even getting colds or the flu. These are all signs that your body is breaking down from the demands and stress that you are putting on it. Time to take a break. The need to always be "on" and to work more and more hours can lead to overtraining and burnout. While you'll still see results – it's hard not to when you're working 12 hours a day – what you do accomplish will require ever-increasing amounts of energy and focus to continue to achieve. Instead, find your optimum performance zone where you feel rested, engaged and challenged so you can achieve more by doing less.

Why You Should Keep Your Grills Fired Up All Year Long

With drought driven cattle liquidations and high cost feed, there continues to be a glut of meat. This should drive meat prices even lower and be incentive for you to keep your grills fired up.
The relationship between man and his grill is understandingly inseparable. So, what is it about this machine that brings out the best in us?
However, bargain basement prices often do more to drive customers away from the meat counter. When panic selling sets in, there is little regard for qualify, and often these under-finished cattle end up being sold right alongside the high end beef. Not knowing the difference, the average consumer unwittingly throws it on the grill, only to be so disappointed. Meat standards have to be adhered to and understood, or the satisfaction of the grill will be missed entirely. Cut identification, grade, and proper cutting all contribute to the gourmet, satiety value of the grilling experience. So don’t let this glut of cheap meat ruin a rich experience. You may have already grilled your way through this summer – the hottest one ever recorded – but with Labor Day a recent memory, and all this extra meat on the market, you may want to reconsider your grilling plans for this year by stretching it out for all winter. And if you just can’t resist some of these extremely cheap cuts, learn to adjust your grilling methods to accommodate both the weather and these less expensive cuts. Instead of grilling individual steaks and chops, cook whole muscle cuts that aren’t so sensitive to temperature and actually become more tender the longer they are cooked over low to medium heat. These whole muscle cuts will weigh from 6 to 12 pounds, so you will have to plan accordingly. But they can be most forgiving when simply browned and slowly cooked in any kind of weather. There are just two things to remember — cut across the grain, and cut thin to win the hearts hearts of those of those you’re trying to please. Any cut of meat cut thin enough will be as tender as hamburger. The high end thick cuts should be reserved for individual steaks and chops, but whole muscles like that of the arm-chuck, top sirloin, or sirloin tip will work just fine. They are also more conducive to the use of the meat thermometer (man’s best friend). With experience, you will find the touch/

Our unforgiving nature is never challenged by the grill; especially if we’ve established bragging rights that are usually reserved for the brand names of our favorite ‘big boy toys’. Such is the case of me and my grill. Unlike most grills that are promoted as a macho association between man and beast, like that of Super Brand fervor—my grill has never been caught up in all that hype. My grill, instead, has no record of established bragging rights nor the virtues of a sales promotion that left it standing all alone on the show room floor.

The hamburger is always of greatest demand during the grilling season, but remember, with all these under-finished cattle, lean is not always better. Let’s face it: When it comes to ground meat, fat adds flavor. Fat adds flavor to any cut of meat, thus the need for marbling found in the higher quality cuts of meat. But adding fat will be particularly important during this time of an abundance of low quality cattle. This meat contains little or no

marbling, and would be extremely dry and tasteless if it weren’t for the co-mingling and mixing of fat from higher quality cuts. Thus, when selecting hamburger, don’t always go for the leanest, most expensive. It will destroy the experience of good outdoor cooking. Select the cheapest, fattest burger you can find, and control the fat content with the sizzle. Turn up the heat, flip quickly and sear in those rich, savory juices. Any excess fat fat is cooked out of the burger, while at the same time retaining unbelievable, scrumptious flavor. Though the burger may not be the health food of choice, it has been declared the all-American food of preference. The burger has probably done more for the livestock industry than any other meat product. And the health issue is
debatable. Unlike that of all the competitive detractors out there, none compare with the unique nutritional dietary requirements that meat provides. Take for instance, iron. The brain needs iron to make mood-regulating chemicals, like dopamine — in fact, people who are iron-deficient may be fifty-percent more likely to become depressed than those with higher iron levels! Meat contains more happinesspromoting Omega-3 fats than any other source.

Our 600 lb. auger fed feeder is Stull Feeder’s newest feeder. It has the same basic design as the 400 lb. feeder, holds up to 600 lbs. of feed and is auger fed. A 12-volt motor can be wired to a battery or hooked up to a backup battery. A 10-foot starter switch lets you operate the auger from the driver’s seat. The Stull Feeders 600 lb. feeder bolts to the bottom of beds of UTVs and trucks. (It is not made to be mounted on ATVs.)
Eliminate the dangerous and dirty manual clean out of headers Goodwin Industries has a corn header sweep for you Pictured on the right is a header sweep built and manufactured by Goodwin Industries Inc. of Burns, KS. The header sweep is designed to sweep in down corn, broken stalks, and dry leaf buildup. This in turn eliminates dangerous and dirty manual clean out of the header. This is done with drag arms connected to a crank shaft, which continuously pulls the stalks into the auger. With this design, the drag arms pull back, pickup, and move forward, set down and pull back again. This unit can be left on and in use at all times. It is not big and bulky and will not hinder good standing corn. You just put it on and let it run. The header sweep is powered by a hydraulic motor connected to the reel drive which allows for variable speed adjustment. Each drag arm is connected to a spring bar, which allows for tension release when necessary. Also, by using a “V” belt drive slippage is possible when needed. The design allows for easy installation on most headers.

Today, things are different. Diesel fuel has tripled in price since 2000. Producers had to do something to make operating irrigation engines more affordable. They started mixing natural gas with diesel, and discovered they saved $80-100 on average per day, per engine. Don Hardy, owner of Don Hardy Fuel Efficient Engine Services in Floydada, Texas, developed a dual fuel mixer for diesel engines to combine natural gas and

diesel. The fuel mixing process could then be done economically, by all producers. In the spring of 2007, Hardy and Leon New, an engineer with the Texas Cooperative Extension Service in Amarillo, tested this mixer on three engines in Floyd County. Two engines were Case IH engines–one waas a turbo-charged, and the other engine, a 4-cylinder non-turbo. The third engine was a John Deere 4T100. During the testing, straight diesel was used, followed by a diesel and natural gas mix. The dual fuel outperformed the diesel on all three engines.

Keeping the design exceptionally simple reduces the risk of electrical connection failure to almost zero since these are some of the most common causes of failure. We use only soldered connections with no mechanical electrical connections like spade clips, terminals or screws which can vibrate loose or corrode over time. There are no start capacitors, relays or contactors with connections which can come loose or arc and weld the contacts causing failure of the contactor and the start capacitors, and perhaps even the rotary converter or your equipment. Because of this we do not have circuit board failures caused by spikes generated by the magnetic contactors as some of our competitors do. The Rotor The PHASE-A-MATIC™ failure rate is practically zero because the rotors are specifically designed and manufactured for rotary converter use. However, some of our competitors emphasize that rotors often fail. This is because they machine standard electric motors, modifying and thereby weakening standard electric motor rotors, which were not originally designed to be used as a phase converter.
