The first time you meet Donald Zolan, you have the feeling of meeting an old friend whom you just haven't seen for awhile. His warmth, candor and interest in others can disguise the fact that he's one of our nation's most talented and popular artists. A very positive and forward looking man, he's at peace with himself and his world. The love and joy you see in his paintings are a sincere expression of himself. A fifth generation artist, Zolan began drawing at age three, and, by age five, was working in watercolors and winning local competitions. He won his first major art competition at age thirteen and was awarded a scholarship to the prestigious Art Institute of Chicago. By sixteen, he won a scholarship to Chicago's American Academy of Art. Full-time formal training began after high school with a full scholarship to the American Academy of Fine Art. Upon graduation, he was selected to apprentice with Haddon Sundblom, a famous Chicago illustrator most known for his Coca-Cola Santa Claus. Zolan moved into the field of commercial art, where he was a great success over the next twelve years. His true love, however, was his fine art paintings which were shown in leading galleries and museums around the world. By the 1970’s, he finally established his own gallery on Nantucket Island. In 1977, the President of the Bradford Exchange visited a Chicago gallery and was so impressed with Zolan's paintings of children that he decided to commission a new work for a collector plate. One April afternoon, Zolan was watching his son blowing a dandelion in the backyard. Inspired by the wonder and fascination of his young son blowing a dandelion, he created his famous painting – Erik and Dandelion - which launched his thirty year collectible career. This new work immediately became Plate of the Year, the first of countless awards Zolan won as a limited edition collectible artist. Zolan's work soared in popularity with collectors and his images were soon licensed on a wide range of products by more than 25 national and international companies, spanning the globe from the Americas, to Europe, and to Australia. In 2008, Zolan introduced a new collection of Santa Claus paintings inspired by his apprenticeship with Haddon Sundblom. Introduced at the New York Licensing Show, Zolan’s new collection captivated and excited collectors with his amazing portrayals of the traditional

jolly Americana Santa. As Sundblom created his Santas for the Coke corporation, Zolan too has introduced a new collection of John Deere Santa’s. Zolan is continually inspired by his happy childhood in Brookfield, IL. His parents fully supported and nurtured their son's talent, and, by his own admission, Zolan had an idyllic childhood. In his own words, Zolan recalls, "Each painting is emblematic of my happy and carefree childhood days growing up in the Heartland. Life was an adventure with my dog, Skipper, always discovering something new and exciting in my little world.” All of Zolan’s paintings rekindle a spark of nostalgia in each of us as the warmth and richness of his work touches the heart and enlivens the soul. This love and joy is reflected in his works. The unique combination of a subject matter so close to his heart and incredible talent, nurtured through years of technical training and experience, make Zolan's paintings among the most popular in the world. What To Look For When

Buying a Planter

“The planter is the most important piece of equipment on your farm, hands down,” says Bill Hoeg, Case IH planter sales and marketing manager in North America. “If planting isn’t optimized – if the seed isn’t planted in a way that maximizes yield potential – that immediately impacts your profitability and should be the No. 1 consideration when purchasing a new planter. No. 2 is planter reliability: You can’t afford to have your planter slow you down during your limited planting window.” Hoeg cites six agronomic principles of optimized planting growers should consider when buying a new planter: proper seed depth; uniform seed depth across the planter and throughout the field; good soil-to-seed contact; uniform soil pressure all around the seed; accurate seed population; and accurate in-row seed spacing. He says a lot of planter manufacturers focus only on in-row seed spacing and accurate populations, “because quite honestly, accurate population and in-row seed spacing are the easiest to impact. But those are only two factors. A planter should be able to deliver on all six agronomic principles right out of the box. It shouldn’t require hundreds of dollars of additional equipment on each row to improve planter performance,” Hoeg advises. “Don’t get caught up in the hype.”

Planter Agronomics “Agronomically, it’s not complicated. If you plant at the right depth, seed will emerge faster. Plant at a uniform depth, and it’ll all come up together. That gives you the best opportunity to maximize yields. Good soil-to-seed contact provides the best environment for seed to germi-

nate. Uniform seed pressure is the hardest to affect, but you want to influence soil pressure on all sides of the seed to maximize moisture conductivity to the seed,” he adds. When it comes to seed population and accurate seed spacing, Hoeg says every planter has operating rules. “As long as you stay within those rules, you can get respectable results. I suggest the Early Riser® planter does a better job, because we have a wider working range within each of those rules. We have a pull-gauge wheel, which allows the row unit to operate much more smoothly in rough fields. We also have the largest diameter seed disk. A bigger disk doesn’t have to turn as fast, so we can remain its optimum operating range even in adverse conditions. Therefore, we can plant a wider range of populations and seed size more accurately at faster speeds.”

Maximum Field Time, Minimum Maintenance According to Hoeg, a planter should also be designed to maximize time spent in the field. “The more time you’re forced to spend handling daily maintenance and making adjustments, the less time you’ll have to plant. “And once you’re in the field, how many adjustments will you have to make every day to keep your planter operating at its best? Are the seed meter and vacuum/air systems sensitive to humidity changes, adverse ground conditions or different seed sizes? If there are four different seed plates you have to change just to handle corn hybrids, that’s going to slow you down,” he notes.

Operation, Location and Farming Practices Hoeg says the size and type of operation are also key factors. “If you have livestock to care for in addition to cash crops, you may need to size the planter differently, because there are fewer hours in the day available for planting. A lot also depends on the type of crop being planted. With some crops, you can’t use a 90-foot planter, like with cotton, so you’ll need to cover more acres with a smaller planter. Transport width may also be a determining factor for growers who have multiple farms and different locations – or for those who simply have to deal with a narrow bridge nearby.” Other considerations are based on individual farming practices. “What inputs do you want to use, how do you want to apply them and in what types of soil? How much time do you have to get it all done? What system do you want to use to fill the planter so you can minimize non-planting time? Are there going to be multiple operators running the planter? If so, ease of use becomes even more important. “Even if you have big square fields, and there aren’t any waterways or other obstructions that cause you to plant in irregular rows, you will want to take advantage of the advanced systems that bigger planters offer,” Hoeg continues. “You’ll likely want AFS (Case IH Advanced Farming Systems®), row shut-offs, driving guides and mapping capabilities to help you utilize every square inch of ground. Irregularly shaped fields with waterways and terraces only enhance the need for these advanced systems. There are all kinds of nuances that factor into which planter model and options you need. That’s why Case IH offers different models, configurations, options and capabilities, from 15foot to 90-foot Early Riser planters,” he concludes. For more information about Early Riser planters, including demonstrations on how to create an ideal seed trench, how to achieve early, even emergence, and the benefits of pull- vs. push-gauge wheels, call your local Case IH dealer or visit www.CaseIH.com. Case IH is a global leader in agricultural equipment, committed to collaborating with its customers to develop the most powerful, productive, reliable equipment – designed to meet today’s agricultural challenges.

Equipment Innovators: Orthman Manufacturing

Henry Orthman's Legacy Contributes Strong Values to the Company He Founded Toiling as an alfalfa and grain hauler between Nebraska and Kansas during the depths of the Great Depression, Henry Orthman continued to dream for more. By 1938, he saved enough to make the down payment on 160 acres of farmland on the Platte River, where he eventually became a leader in the mechanization of handling alfalfa. It was this interest in progress – and a strong propensity for tinkering with farm equipment – that ultimately led to the founding of the company that bears his name today. “Dad was a good farmer, but he liked machinery much better,” said his son, Bill Orthman. “He never wanted to be called an inventor – he always said he was an innovator.” He had lots of his own ideas, but he was particularly adept at hearing the problems neighboring farmers had with their equipment and developed solutions that could be replicated over and over again. “Every good idea comes from a farmer sitting on a tractor,” said Bill Orthman. “Dad was really good at being able to listen and build equipment to do the job the farmer asked for.” By 1963, Henry Orthman began to see the longterm promise of his ideas and founded Orthman Manufacturing. He hired a welder, drastically reduced his then 600-acre farming operation, moved his farm shop into a hay storage shed, and began to produce attachments to convert tractor-mounted and pull-type corn cultivators to a three-point mount system. “He really had a love of the three-point hitch,” his son recalled. Once the Ferguson patent on the three-point hitch expired, major tractor companies adopted it universally. This provided a strong marketing niche for the new company that continued to grow as Henry Orthman developed new products for farmers’ changing needs. Early successes included a tool bar with a hydraulic cylinder inside the main tube instead of on top of the bar – a design he patented and licensed to John Deere, International Harvester, and several smaller companies. Additionally, Orthman developed the first successful automatic implement guidance system to ensure cultivators ran straight and was a leader in developing high residue row crop cultivators. Henry Orthman was also an early advocate of limiting tillage trips to not only reduce fuel and labor costs, but improve soil and decrease erosion. This philosophy eventually led to the development of the 1tRIPr in 1998, a product that continues to be a success for the company today. “Dad didn’t completely understand the agronomics, but he knew that the health and quality of the soil improved if you didn’t completely destroy the structure every year,” his son recalled.

Throughout the company’s growth, Henry Orthman remained loyal to employees and farmers alike. “We have a lot of long-term employees; people liked to work with dad,” Bill Orthman said. “He was great mentor and very open to people’s ideas…he liked to visit and have farmers come and talk with him.” Perhaps one his most lasting legacies is the light green color that adorns all Orthman Manufacturing equipment. Initially, he painted equipment to match the colors of major manufacturers. However, he soon realized that he wanted his own color to distinguish his company’s products.

The Atlas Cart liquid or dry fertilizer distribution system.

“He started out with white and began bleeding a little green into the white until he came up with Orthman green,” said Bill Orthman. “We like that color and we are recognized by it.” Henry Orthman was 90 years old when he died in 2002. His son Bill Orthman managed the company through a difficult period for farm equipment suppliers in the 1980s and in the 1990s developed the Mid-South dealer organization and began a relationship with John Deere that led to the company’s renewed success.

The GPS Ready Tracker IV Implement Guidance System provides maximum implement precision.

In 2000, to assure that the company remained in Lexington, the Orthmans sold to longtime sales and marketing manager John McCoy, who leads the company today. “He has done a tremendous job of growing and running the company,” said Bill Orthman. The company remains based in Lexington, Nebraska and has three manufacturing locations in central Nebraska producing precision agricultural equipment, industrial material handling equipment and rebuilding CNC manufacturing work centers. It continues Mr. Orthman’s legacy by utilizing his original farm researching precision tillage and fertilizer application practices. In addition, the company corporates with 13 research sites in the United States, one site in Europe and one in South Africa. Today, Orthman Manufacturing has products operating throughout the US and 16 foreign countries.

New package offers more parasite control options for beef producers StandGuard® Pour-on now available in larger size Beef producers looking for convenient control of horn flies and lice now have another option from Elanco – a larger package size for StandGuard® Pour-on. The new 4.5 L size is available in addition to the current 900 mL size. A single bottle of the new size can treat 450 cattle weighing less than 600 lbs or 300 cattle greater than 600 lbs with a single application. “As producers prepare to put cattle out on pasture, this product size gives them more options to get effective, powerful horn fly control,” said Doug Hufstedler, PhD and Elanco beef technical consultant. “All sizes and types of operations can use what works for them, as the 4.5 L size offers a new solution for operations treating large groups of cattle at one time.” As temperatures warm up during the next few months, the threat of horn flies increases. Horn flies are the No. 1 pest for U.S. pasture cattle, costing producers more than $876 million1 annually – so getting effective and powerful control at the start of the season is essential. Additionally,

When given as directed, NuLife® Oral Electrolyte helps replace lost fluid and electrolytes, helps correct acidosis and provides a readily available source of energy. The electrolyte powder can be mixed with, or fed in conjunction with, milk or milk replacer.

heavy horn fly populations can reduce stocker gains 15 to 50 lbs, calf weaning weights 10 to 15 lbs and milk production in pastured cows by 20 percent. “The larger bottle size also is well-suited for control of lice in the feedyard,” said Hufstedler. “Producers might not realize that moderate to heavy lice infestations can significantly reduce gain by as much as 9.2 percent, which is equivalent to 0.21 lbs/hd/day.” StandGuard Pour-on delivers effective control of horn flies and season long control of lice with one application. Containing gamma-cyhalothrin, the most potent pyrethroid on the market, StandGuard has quick-kill action and is an excellent choice for parasite-control rotations. Beef producers can purchase both sizes of StandGuard Pour-on through traditional animal health suppliers. The label contains complete use information, including cautions and warnings. Always read, understand and follow the label and use directions. ________________________________________

This arrangement will enhance the likelihood that law enforcement can quickly identify the true owner of a Vermeer machine 24 hours a day. HELPtech registration decals further mitigate risk through deterring theft. "We believe that this relationship is one more way to serve our Vermeer customers better," stated Lois Slings, product liability risk manager at Vermeer. "By providing new point-of-sale data and the historical download of equipment sold, Vermeeer has taken a proactive step to help its clients protect their assets," added Ryan Shepherd, operations manager at NER. "Because of this step, it just became a riskier proposition for criminals to steal or try to sell stolen Vermeer equipment in the used market."

“In marketing the NuLife® products,” explains Tom Bjelland, Genex vice president of strategic market development, “we wanted to bring a real quality product to our members and customers. America's Advanced Biofuel goes petal to the metal, industry's national ad effort takes off

The EPA has determined that biodiesel reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 57 percent to 86 percent compared with petroleum diesel, depending on the feedstock used. Biodiesel also has the highest energy balance of any domestic liquid fuel, yielding 4 ½ units of energy for every unit of fossil energy it takes to produce it. The EPA also says biodiesel dramatically reduces nearly every toxic air pollutant compared with traditional diesel.

It's loud, fast, and thrilling, and it's more than a concept. Biodiesel is America's only advanced biofuel available nationwide. It's the fast track to American jobs - the road to energy independence. As the U.S. biodiesel industry shows in its just-launched ad campaign, biodiesel is here, now.

________________________________________

"A billion gallons. That's how much imported diesel biodiesel replaced last year," said Joe Jobe, CEO of the National Biodiesel Board. "This is not just an idea. Biodiesel is working today to meet renewable fuel demands, and we can do more." The ad campaign is the second time the industry has taken to the airwaves, television screens, web, and print outlets to tell its story. And what a story it is. Ads center around land speed record holder Brent Hajek. The Oklahoma soybean farmer shattered the previous record in a stock Ford SuperDuty™ diesel truck running on 20 percent biodiesel. There is no wondering if the fuel works or if it is a viable alternative when Hajek's truck blows past at 182 miles per hour. "This ad campaign tells people that advanced biofuel is here now,” said Jobe. "Biodiesel creates jobs, is better for the environment, and supports energy security. AND it breaks land speed records too. There's no doubt this is a great alternative fuel success story." Biodiesel is a renewable, clean-burning diesel replacement made from an increasingly diverse mix of resources such as agricultural oils, recycled cooking oil and animal fats, with a host of potential future feedstocks such as algae under research. It is the first and only commercial-scale fuel produced nationwide to meet the EPA’s definition as an advanced biofuel under the agency’s Renewable Fuel Standard, which is spurring development of sustainable alternatives to imported oil.

CASE IH and GPTC receive honorary citation for 20 years of custom harvester safety training Case IH and the Great Plains Technology Center (GPTC) in Frederick, Okla., were jointly honored in May of 2012, with a citation from the state of Oklahoma for continuous commitment to the safety of wheat harvest workers. Presented on behalf of Oklahoma Lt. Gov. Todd Lamb and State Representative Don Armes, the citation noted that for the past 20 years, Case IH and GPTC have partnered “…for the promotion of harvesting safety through the ProHarvest Kickoff.” The presentation coincided with the 2012 Case IH ProHarvest Kickoff, an annual safety training program for custom harvesting crews. “This is the 20th consecutive year we’ve held the safety training at the Great Plains Technology Center,” says Dan Renaud, the Case IH combine specialist who organizes the event. “On behalf of Case IH and GPTC, we’re honored that the state of Oklahoma recognizes and appreciates our efforts to keep custom harvesters safe.” Renaud credits Jim Smith, the GPTC’s agricultural and machine repair instructor, for hosting the annual spring training. “It’s a half-day training which starts out with breakfast provided by the Frederick, Okla., FFA Chapter that Case IH has partnered with for many years also, on two consecutive days, and involves hundreds of custom harvester crew members, in addition to more than two dozen Case IH employees there to answer questions. Every year, Jim opens his doors to us for the duration.”

vest for over 25 years. This effort currently includes two, company trained four-man teams equipped with support trailers loaded up with Case IH parts, test equipment and service tooling that follow the custom harvesters on their months-long run every year, from the starting point at the Texas/Oklahoma border north to the Canadian border. The Case IH ProHarvest teams support local dealerships, make sure combine parts are stocked and keep the custom cutters rolling. ________________________________________

Britespan Building Systems expands facility BRITESPAN Building Systems along with dealers from across North America kicked off 2012 with exciting news from the BRITESPAN Head Office. Ben Hogervorst, President announced they would be expanding their manufacturing facility and constructing a 150’w x 164’L Genesis fabric covered building. Fast forward 5 months and the project is nearing completion and is on schedule to be operating the first of July. In December of 2011, BRITESPAN Building Systems broke ground for their new 25,000 sq ft manufacturing facility beside business partner Rob Stute’s Welding & Machining plant. The new plant will allow BRITESPAN to move out of their current 1200 sq ft rented facility a half mile away and be more efficient. The new plant is a fabric covered, steel framed building, just as BRITESPAN sells to its own customers. BRITESPAN wanted to showcase one of their products. The plant is insulated to R30 and has a steel inner liner. The new manufacturing facility will include a combination of new and existing equipment and new special proprietary equipment. This new, increased work space will enable BRITESPAN to triple their manufacturing capabilities and streamline the manufacturing process. BRITESPAN Building Systems is a provider of pre-engineered, steel frame fabric covered buildings for agricultural, commercial and government applications with dealers located throughout North American and are expanding into the European market.

According to Renaud, the goal of the ProHarvest Kickoff is to get crew members thinking about safety before the harvest season starts. “Usually between 70 to 80 percent of the attendees are on their first harvest run. Many are young, between 18 and 23 years old,” he explains. “So we review combine safety procedures and show safety videos and photos to remind them that no one is invincible, no matter how young and strong they are.”

The multi-million dollar project includes national television and web advertising, and regional print and radio advertising. Two 30-second spots will air across the nation on Sunday-morning network news public affairs shows, beginning this Sunday, June 17th. The National Biodiesel Board worked with PCI Communications, a leading provider of creative communications services for Fortune 500 corporations, national associations, and federal agencies to create the campaign. Case IH is the only major agricultural equipment manufacturer that offers this type of safety training for this important combine harvesting segment, most of which are members of the U.S. Custom Harvesters Association, which also involves combine operation and productivity training. “The ProHarvest Kickoff training has always welcomed all brands,” Renaud says. “We don’t care what color combine you run. Everyone is welcome. Combine safety is our ultimate goal.” The term ProHarvest refers to the Case IH ProHarvest support program that has been supporting the wheat har-

Equipment at Work: Hyundai Loaders

Hyundai loader provides muscle for Earth Care Farm compost operation Rhode Island may not be one of the largest states in the country, but its geographic location makes it one of the most nutrient rich. Nestled between the New England Mountains and the eastern coastline, the small state of Rhode Island is an ideal place for the production of compost. Michael Merner, Founder of Earth Care Farm and Rhode Island’s oldest compost farmer, learned this first hand when he began his compost business in 1979. Since that time he has made a living by utilizing the natural byproducts of the state to manufacture compost for sale to local farms, businesses and homeowners. By continually replenishing the land in harmony with nature, Merner is helping to preserve high soil quality for future generations. When people think of composting, they often think of large production facilities with enormous screeners and a distinct odor, many of which are operated by townships that collect leaves and brush from local residents. Very few people think of a small, family owned and operated farm producing a finished product that smells like sweet earth with the belief thatthere’s no such thing as waste in nature. Earth Care Farms is just that, a small, specialty farm that produces 3,000 cubic yards of chemical free compost each year. To yield that amount of compost annually, the farm must accept and continually move three times that amount of material, up to 9,000 cubic yards, due to its reduction in volume while maturing. With such a high volume of materials to be moved on their small, 30-acre farm, 3 acres of which serve as their compost footprint, the staff relies heavily on their equipment fleet which includes 3 wheel loaders, a rented screener, a backhoe and several compact tractors, the workhorse and muscle of the daily operation being their Hyundai HL760 wheel loader. Merner said that, “Our equipment is indispensible, particularly the Hyundai loader. Without it, we’d need 1,000 people with pitchforks to manually do the work of this one machine.” According to John Barth, General Farm Manager, Earth Care Farm takes equipment purchases very seriously because they are so reliant upon it. “We purchased the Hyundai HL760, 215hp, 39,460 lb., 4 wheel drive loader just over two years ago to help support our growing business and to assist us in moving large amounts of material and mature compost quickly. We owned other brand loaders at the time, but following some research, the Hyundai HL760 made the most sense for our application. Once delivered, it quickly became my machine of choice. "The hydraulic response on the HL760 is phenomenal and its econo-mode allows us to save money on fuel without sacrificing performance, while remaining environmentally conscious through lower emissions. With fuel being such a key expense in the manufacture of compost, the econo mode on the HL760 was a huge selling point. In addition, the machine moves quickly. With 4 forward and 3 reverse speeds, it can travel up to 21.3 miles per hour, which helps us get more done in less time.” The Hyundai loader is used daily to move materials dumped at the facility to the large, maturing compost piles. Once the material is moved to the piles, the loader is further used to incorporate the new materials into the piles and to aerate and mix the compost 5 yards at a time. Every pile is completely mixed and aerated every 3 weeks. Equipped with a 5 cubic yard bucket and 30,510 lb. breakA UGUST 2 01 2

out force, the HL760 has no problem moving numerous types of material. “Every day we get a variety of materials delivered to the farm, from leaves and woodchips, to vegetable clippings, to local fish byproduct and seaweed, to zoo manure, to restaurant and food scraps. The diversity of the materials that go into our compost is what makes it so nutrient rich and sought after,” states Merner. Not all compost is created equal. Many larger, production oriented compost facilities use just leaves and brush which may be tainted by herbicide residues or sewer sludge which often contains heavy metals to create compost. These materials have very little nutrient value and are generally low cost. High-quality compost is made from a broad variety of nutrient rich, chemical free materials and is typically twice the price of landfill compost, but you get what you pay for according to Merner. “The higher the nutrient value in the compost, the higher the per cubic yard price and the greater the yield in terms of growth for crops, flowers, etc. The most unique attribute about the compost produced on our farm is the addition of the marine byproducts from the many fish processing plants in Southern New England. The fish byproduct adds a level of fertility to the compost incomparable to any I’ve seen during my 33 years in the business. The soil web and nutrient analysis testing we do support this.” In addition to moving materials into the maturing compost piles, the Hyundai Loader is used to move and load mature compost from the piles into the screener, where any particles larger than 3/4” are removed. Once screened, the mature compost is ready for loading into the trucks of landscapers, garden centers, farmers, gardeners and homeowners as they arrive at the farm.

Pictured: John Barth shows off some of the farms huge Rhubarb. Its growth is attributed to it being planted in the farms compost; Hyundai's HL-760 loader at work moving compost.

“We work this loader for a minimum of 40 hours each week. When you depend that heavily on one machine, it needs to be reliable, its needs to be comfortable and it needs to be supported, because when you work a machine that hard, eventually it’s going to need some maintenance. The Hyundai HL-760 met all these criteria.”

hasn’t been working on the farm.

Kahn Tractor of North Franklin, Connecticut, was the dealer who introduced Earth Care Farm to the HL-760 loader. Having owned other name brand loaders, the staff knew what they were looking for and trusted the dealer and their sales representative to stand behind the product. “The cab on the HL760 is extremely comfortable year round,” states Barth. “Its climate control in terms of air conditioning and heat allow us to work productively on the coldest and hottest days of the year. The cabin air fresh filter is also a nice feature, particularly since the smell of some of the materials delivered before its incorporated into the compost piles can be pretty offensive. Another nice feature of the cab is its wide, tinted and laminated windshield, which has no framing cutting through it, allowing me to see in all directions to easily assess both the terrain and the work to be done.” Maintenance on the Hyundai HL760 was also well thought out. The loader has easy-to-access service points for routine maintenance and oil changes, as well as an easy-toaccess pilot filter, grease fittings, central electric controllers and fuse box and remote drain port. To date, routine maintenance is the only time that the Hyundai HL-760

When asked why their business continues to grow, Barth said, “Most of our new business comes from word of mouth. When someone’s neighbor sees a garden with plants that are thriving, full of tomatoes or rhubarb that are twice the size as theirs early in the season, they ask questions. The answers to those questions typically result in new customers for our farm. Word of mouth is our only form of marketing.” Base materials delivered and incorporated into the piles are turned in an aerobically-managed compost system. Each batch of compost takes approximately one year from start to finish. The mature, finished black compost bares little resemblance to the ingredients it was made from, with the exception of little pieces of shellfish, which give Earth Care Farm’s compost a regional uniqueness not found in compost produced inland. Earth Care Farm was founded by Michael Merner in 1972, with the compost operation starting shortly thereafter. Merner has made his living by allowing local businesses and towns to dump natural waste byproducts from around the state on his farm for incorporation into the chemical free compost that is manufactured. Battling siblings, or ‘Can’t we all just get along?’ Sibling rivalry may be as old as the Biblical story of Cain and Abel. Fortunately, most conflicts between siblings don’t lead to the same tragic result, but they can be distressing to parents and children alike. To keep the peace in your household, follow this advice:

• Start early. Involve the older child before the younger brother or sister comes along. Talk about how life develops in a mother’s body, discuss what changes the family should expect, and reassure the child of his or her parents’ love.

on their own—by asking politely, taking turns, seeing things from the sibling’s point of view, and so forth. If you must get involved, try not to take sides; help the children negotiate their own solution.

• Hold family meetings. Bring everyone together once a week to discuss issues and explore solutions. Most of the time children just want to be heard. Give them a chance to speak and respond, and work together to resolve differences and disagreements.

• Pay attention. Many struggles between siblings arise because one of the children feels neglect¬ed and wants his or her share of attention. Do your best to devote some special time to each child so he or she doesn’t feel less important or unloved. Avoid any behavior that might appear to favor one child over the other.

• Don’t compare children. Holding up one child as an example to the other can spark resentment and jealousy. Don’t expect them to become mirror images of each other. Appreciate each child on his or her own merits, and respect your kids’ individuality. • Teach children to settle their own conflicts. If you impose a solution, or drop everything to mediate a conflict, chances are good that no one will be happy. Talk to children about how they can solve the problem

wrong with them - in fact, I'd be a little worried if they didn't have a dustup every once in awhile. It's the ones who keep their feelings bottled up who eventually blow sky high someday - so I'd rather they bleed off pressure slowly over time rather than going volcanic on us someday.

Dear Michael: We've always read your column and have kept most of your columns for years. However, we have two questions to ask you. One, where can we check on any columns we may have missed? Two, what about some of the less technical questions you receive from people or maybe a better way to put it, is what are some dumb things people think about that they should avoid in estate planning? – Questions

The best way to defuse it is to - get this strange idea - talk to them about what your estate plans are going to be. If you don't know what you want to do, talk to an estate counselor to find out what it is you do want to do. If you don't know any farm estate counselors, I happen to know of a great one. Get the beginnings of a plan started and then start telling the kids about what you are thinking or what you had in mind. If you can see they don't exactly agree with what you are thinking, have it out with them, and have them speak their mind. Sometimes, you may agree with their logic and change your plan and other times you two can't come to terms, but they accept your decision. Make certain they know it's 'your' decision and not to take it out on any of the other heirs, their siblings.

Dear Questions: We have set up a few different places where you can read my column whenever you'd like and these columns are available for as long as two years past the time that I've written them. You can go to www.farmandlivestockdirectory.com or you can go to www.greatplainsdiversifiedservices.com and both sites will have links to all of my old columns. You can even see a funny picture of me - although I am funny in all of my photos and it's the same one you see in the paper. Just funny looking, I guess. Second, what are the dumb things people ask, or perhaps better stated, what are some of the dumb things people believe? Maybe it would be easier to answer the second question so you know what I have to deal with. Dealing in Reality - It seems a lot of people feel like if they believe something long enough and hard enough, it becomes true. Under this heading, I have several sub-headings such as: My kids will never fight with each other once we are gone! This one is a classic. Every time I have someone tell me this - which is about seventy-five percent of the time, I have to ask if their children are human. When they reply that 'yes, indeed, their children ARE human' I know there's a seventy-five percent chance the children will eventually get into one scrum or another - either before you die or, more likely, after you die - when you're not around to be the referee anymore.

Quality Guaranteed!

They may fight over little things or they may fight over big things - everything from which gun or piece of jewelry each of them received from Dad or Mom to fighting about how much Jr. has to pay to the non-farming children for the farmland - normally hundreds to thousands of dollars apart in value - per acre!

Second Dumb Things People Believe and Hope to Be True - 'Oh, my property isn't worth that much because the farm value isn't worth that much' or 'I bought it for this and it should still be worth this' or 'I don't agree with what people are paying for property in my area - they're crazy and my property isn't worth that much!' There are three possible entities out there who might disagree with your valuation method and two of them really don't care what you think it's worth - and the third might disagree but will make it miserable for everyone else. Those first two would be IRS and Medicaid. They don't care you think your land is worth eight hundred. They only care that land right next to you or close by sold for twentyfive hundred dollars - and that's the value they use. The pure definition of value by IRS is this - 'the current market value of the property based on recent land sales in the area'. Doesn't get much clearer than that, does it? As such, when you're planning to avoid costs or interference in your estate plan for a government entity, you better plan on using their numbers just because they will! The third entity might be your other non-farming children when you're setting up your estate plan for a farming child. You might feel the land is worth eight hundred but they'll know your farming child can sell it for twenty-five hundred and that should get the family brawl started. Hundreds of thousands are on the line - and you're kids will know! If you're going to use a lessened value on the land in your estate plan for a farming child, you better explain to the other children why you feel this is the right number. Remember, using a number today isn't going to be the same as five years, ten years or twenty years from now! Which leads us into another dumb thing people like to believe but history has proven wrong over, and over, and over and over - 'Land is going to be worth less in the future because.....' we'll get into this more at "Keeping the Family Farm in the Family" in the Country Living Section at

FARM and RANCH LIFE By Dr. Michael R. Rosmann

PTSD: A Survival Mechanism Gone Awry In many ways, post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a normal response that has gone haywire. The initial trigger situation might be: the explosion of a bomb alongside an Afghanistan road; severe farm financial pressures, such as loan foreclosure; getting hit on a highway by a drunk driver whose vehicle swerved into your lane; or any severe traumatic event. Traumatic events are dangerous to our physical or emotional well-being and elicit distress. In 1915, Dr. Walter Cannon, a Harvard University physiology professor, demonstrated how we deal with threatening situations by avoiding the threat or confronting it. He called this the “Flight or Fight Response.” Later, Dr. Martin Seligman, a University of Pennsylvania psychologist, added a third response — “Freeze.” Also called learned helplessness, to freeze is to become emotionally paralyzed and unable to do anything.

flight from the threat, fight the threat or to freeze. Our muscles tense, our heart speeds up, blood pressure increases and our senses sharpen, such as our pupils dilate to take in visual information. In short, we are alert and alarmed. After the threat dissipates or because we appraise the situation as no longer threatening or because we have taken flight, fought the threat or became emotionally helpless and froze, afterwards our nervous system tries to resume a state of normalcy. Our adrenal gland secretes cortisol. This helps us recuperate and prepare for the next threat. It allows muscles and pupils to relax, our heart to slow down and makes us feel tired. It encourages the accumulation of fat reserves for future emergencies. If no additional threats occur, our nervous system is able to produce serotonin and norepinepherine. These are essential transmitter chemicals that give us a sense of well-being, increase our tolerance of pain and help us to relax.

Stimuli that remind us of the threatening event (e.g., loud noises that remind the soldier of a roadside bomb exploding, a friendly chance encounter with a bank official that reinstates foreclosure fears or becoming upset when you are driving down the same highway where the drunk driver wrecked your vehicle and injured you) trigger alarm reactions.

Each time another threat triggers our alarm, the connection between the stimulus events and our reaction of flight, fight or freeze strengthens. Sometimes the threats are real, such as repeated deployments to war zones and further exposures to intermittent explosive devices. We might endure further legal actions stemming from bankruptcy or we might encounter another erratic driver.

Becoming alarmed is meant to protect us. But, when we over-react and become alarmed unnecessarily by non-threatening events only because they remind us of the initial stressor, we have developed PTSD.

But, when we can’t stop ourselves from reacting unnecessarily to triggers that aren’t really dangerous, we have acquired a learned bad habit. Essentially, PTSD is habitual but unnecessary repetition of the arousal-depletion cycle.

Even bad dreams can trigger distress.

Just like multiple stressors wear down our ability to cope physiologically and psychologically, repeated exposures to triggers — whether real or learned bad habits — result in fatigue and chronic depletion of serotonin and norepinepherine. We become exhausted and depressed.

Our physiological and psychological reactions to stress comprise what is called the Arousal-Depletion Cycle. Also called the General Adaptation Syndrome, the phases of the cycle include: We appraise a situation as threatening because it can harm us in some way. Our nervous system becomes aroused by a flood of neurotransmitter chemicals (chiefly adrenaline), which prepare us to take

Even our immune system can become compromised in its ability to ward off disease. PTSD, with its accompanying depression, contributes to an increased risk of suicide.

We can grow so weary of the repeated cycles that we want only to escape what seems like endless torment. What can we do when we have developed PTSD? PTSD seldom goes away on its own. The most effective treatments include relearning how to manage ourselves, usually with the assistance of a trained and experienced professional caregiver, so we don’t incorrectly interpret every reminder of the initial threat as dangerous. Anti-anxiety medications often are needed to gain control over our physiological reactions. Relearning works best when we feel safe, understood by those who are assisting us and have others to coach us through rough times. I have more information about resources for farm people dealing with PTSD, including returning soldiers, who originated from farm and rural backgrounds in ‘Farm And Ranch Life’ in the Country Lifestyle section of the website at www.farmandlivestockdirectory.com. The article was posted on June 20, and is titled ‘Healing Post Traumatic Stress Disorder’. As you may know, soldiers who trace their origins to farm and rural life are disproportionately represented among our militia. Dr. Michael R. Rosmann brings the perspective of a farmer in “Farm And Ranch Life”. Dr. Rosmann grew up on a mixed grain and livestock farm in Western Iowa where he experienced enjoyable hard work and 4-H, and witnessed the stresses that accompany farming and farm life. Dr. Rosmann developed the first mental health response in Iowa to the Farm Crisis of the 1980s. In 2001, Dr. Rosmann, along with partners in seven states, founded the nonprofit network, AgriWellness Inc. AgriWellness conducted research and provided counseling services to farm people. It became clearer that a specialized field – agricultural behavioral health – was needed to respond to the unique problems experienced by farmers, ranchers and others involved in agriculture. Email Dr. Rosmann at mike@agriwellness.org, or visit his website at www. agbehavioralhealth.com. You can call him at his office in Harlan, Iowa at 712-235-6100.

Water Tips from Pennywise for Inside and Outside the Home Car washing Car washing uses a lot of water and in most instances, 99% of it runs into the storm drains. If you think you have to wash your car, drive it onto your lawn and then wash it. Any soap you use won't hurt the grass, and the water will soak into your grass. (Yea, I hear you about it leaving tracks, but grass grows and when you mow it, the tracks will disappear.)

Swimming pools Cover it when you aren't using it. Evaporation can cost you up to 1000 gallons of water a month for a small pool. Clean the filter often and you won't have to change the water as frequently. When you do change the water, let it run onto the lawn, water trees, flowers and the shrubs.

Watering the yard * Please, just water the yard – not the sidewalks and the streets. (I have real problems with city crews that water sidewalks and streets instead of the 'green' areas. That just lets thousands of gallons of water wash down city streets and into the gutters. * Let the grass grow a little higher between mowing and cut back or cut out the fertilizer. Fertilized grass takes more water.

Wash only full loads of clothes and only when they really need washing. Kids can change into play clothes after church or school and the good clothes can be hung up for an extra wearing. An automatic washer uses up to 30 gallons of water per load. Turn off the running water while shaving or brushing your teeth. An open faucet can run from 7 to 10 gallons of water a minute down the drain. It goes without saying that any leaking faucets should be corrected immediately. Just one leaking faucet can waste 2,700 gallons of water a year, to say nothing of wasting the money in your wallet! Check for hidden leaks in your toilets by putting a few drops of food coloring in the tank. If the water changes color within 30 minutes, you have a hidden leak and it needs to be fixed at once. Flush the toilet after 30 minutes as the food coloring can stain the tank and the toilet bowl. A leaking toilet can waste upwards of 53,000 gallons of water a year! If you have the 'old-fashioned' toilets that use up to 12 gallons of water per flush, try putting a one-quart or even a ½-gallon plastic milk jug full of water in your tank, saving water by using less per flush. It's not a real good idea to use old bricks or stones as they can flake off and damage the workings.

* If your city or town has water rationing, concentrate on the garden, shrubs and trees and let the grass go dormant. It takes about 27,000 gallons of water a week to keep an acre of lawn nice and green.

Insulate your hot water pipes so you don't need to run so much cold water out to get warm water. Save any run-off in pitchers to water plants in the flower beds.

* When I water the trees in my yard, I use the black soaker hose just along the tree trunks. It uses about 50% less water than a sprinkler. The birds love the mist for bathing and since the cats don't like to get wet, they seem to leave the birds alone.

In the Kitchen

* Use mulch around trees to hold water. You can use shredded leaves, pine needles, clean hay, straw or purchased mulch.

Water Tips for Inside the Home Bathrooms and Laundry The new models of shower heads 'low-flow' use about half the water of the older models. Take showers instead of baths, but limit the length of the showers. One gentleman discovered his children were taking 45 minute showers, and when he cut their time down to 15 minutes, his found his water bill was hugely reduced! If you plug the drain, the gray water can be used for watering plants outdoors. The soap won't hurt the plants. Or, you can use it to flush the stool. Use a bucket for this; do not pour the gray water into the tank as it could back-siphon into your water system... A UGUST 2 01 2

* Wash produce in a bowl instead of under running water. Save the draining for watering outside. * Water from home canners and pressure cookers can be cooled and used outdoors to water trees, shrubs and flowers. * Run your dishwasher only when it is full, and if you must pre-rinse, plug the sink and rinse the whole batch instead of letting the water run down the drain. * Save money by using plastic water bottles that are refillable, and do it at home from your own faucet. If you read the labels on most bottled water, it comes from a city water supply, and there is no 'cents' in paying $1.29 for a bottle of tap water. If you have other ideas on saving water, drop me a note or e-mail me at pennywise@gwtc.net and I'll get it in the next issue of the Farm And Livestock Directory. Water is expensive, and after all – it's YOUR MONEY!

PENNYWISE Another Tool in the Fine Art of Money Management

By Paula Vogelgesang

Water – WHERE IS IT??? Water – the very essence of life itself. One can go for days without food, but without water, life ends in a short time. Right now, according to what figures I can find, over 25 states and maybe even more have areas of drought. The state I live in is droughtstricken. The land is parched, and not only are we very short on rain, but we also have hordes grasshoppers infesting crop and pasture land, and some folks have had alfalfa weevils that decimated the crop almost before it could grow. Our thermometer has consistently shown temperatures ranging in the 90 to 100 degree range, with winds whipping at 20 to 40 miles an hour, drying out crops and grassland. Stock dams and wells are drying up, and ranchers have begun to haul hay to the cattle in pastures in some areas.

This got me to thinking about how much we take our seemingly unlimited supply of clean, fresh water for granted. How much water did your great-grandparents use in a day's time? How much water did your grandparents or great-grandparents use in one day? Do you know how much water your family uses during the course of just one day? One gallon? 25 gallons? 100 gallons? Most people haven't a clue. According to the USDA, the amount is between 60 and 80 gallons per day, per person – and that amount has tripled in the last 100 years.

The wildlife appreciates the food and water also. Deer, coyote and birds flock to the water tanks for bathing and drinking. They sometimes help themselves to the hay bales and rest in the shade away from the heat of the hot sun. Those who managed to get some hay put up earlier in the year have stated that they simply left many hay fields alone, as there was nothing to harvest, and what few fields they did cut had an average of 20% of last years crop. We have had thousands of acres of forest and grasslands burn so far this year, and the wildfires are not over yet! There are thousands of acres of dead pine trees as a result of pine beetle infestations, and the fire danger in these areas is extremely high as a result of no rain. Is another 'Dust Bowl' like there was in the 1930’s just around the corner? Only time will tell. Over the years I have listened to stories told to me by elderly neighbors who homesteaded this area and raised their families here. They tell of walking upwards of a half mile just to dip a bucket of scummy, warm water out of a drying up creek or slough, taking it back to the homestead shack and skimming/straining the wigglers out

800- 622- 8836 | T h e S O U T H E RN FA RM a n d L I V E S T O CK D I RE CT O RY |

before giving their children a drink of the warm brackish water. These same women told of carrying bucket after bucket of water to heat on a wood stove to wash kids, clothes, and then the wooden floor with that same water, and then pouring what was left on their parched garden plants. “We wore the water out!” was the remark.

Think about it: today, we have indoor plumbing with all the extras, like garden tubs and spas, dishwashers, automatic washing machines, air conditioners, swimming pools, lawn sprinklers – some even built right in to the lawn with timers so it get watered automatically! We also have miles and miles and miles of public parks and golf courses that are sprinkler irrigated, and untold acres of lush green lawns – plus the irrigated farmland that was almost non-existent 100 years ago. Can you imagine what would happen if you got up tomorrow morning, turned on the tap and nothing came out? A far-fetched idea? Perhaps not so much these days… Given this fact, this month’s hints and ideas are about water. I've collected these ideas over the years, and I hope that some of these can be implemented in your homes to conserve this precious resource that we all depend on for our very life itself. As always, if you have tips or ideas to share, send them to me at PennyWise, Box 518, Kadoka, SD 57543 or email me at pennywise@gwtc.net. Please be sure to mention this publication when you write.

clear clutter, organize your home, & reclaim your life Slow Down, Summer! Barbara Tako — Motivational Speaker and Author Does summer speed along too fast? Do you feel hectic and hurried rather than rested and relaxed? I look forward to summer, but it seems like it slips by more quickly every year. Vacations, swimming lessons, activities for the kids, part-time jobs for the teens, social events, and yard and home improvement projects make summer way too rushed. Life is anything but simple, even in the summer--maybe especially in the summer. There is so much to do and so little time. My family and I hurry from one activity to the next, sometimes barely taking time to appreciate them. Sometimes the stuff that is supposed to be fun doesn't feel fun because we are so busy. Hectic schedules eat away at what is supposed to be a summer break.

quietly and closing your eyes. Do nothing but sit and relax. See if you can set your internal clock for three minutes (no fair counting!). Open your eyes and check the time when you think three minutes has elapsed. How did you do? For many of us, three minutes sitting quietly with our eyes closed will seem like an eternity. We will speed things up and feel that three minutes elapsed well before three minutes of real time passed. Maybe we are used to living lives that are too "speeded up."

Time won't necessarily slow down when you do these things. In fact, favorites often make time fly for people. But, it flies by in an enjoyable way that leaves you energized, centered, and refreshed. When you allow yourself to do your personal favorites, you find yourself thinking afterwards, "Wow, I really liked that. I forgot how much I enjoy doing that. I could do that more often." After thinking that, many of us go directly back to the other hectic demands in our lives. Stop. Give yourself permission to do the things you love. Give permission more often.

Here are tips to simplify summer time and enjoy the remainder of your summer at a simpler pace. There are ways to change your time perception and techniques to appreciate these wonderful summer days. Do you hurry time along? I suggest a simple exercise for you to check your own pace. It sounds corny, but if you try it, you may be surprised by the results. Ask a friend or family member to time you with a watch, or use a stopwatch or kitchen timer by yourself. Begin by sitting

To slow down to a more enjoyable pace, regularly do more activities that you "lose yourself in. These are activities so engrossing to you personally that you get pulled into the flow and you don’t realize how much time has passed. You will know what these things are if you take a few moments to think about it. Some people like to read or garden. Others like to sew or work on a favorite project or hobby. Still others might exercise or bike. It could be anything. Everyone is unique.

Find activities that stretch time for you. For many, quiet nature walks or sitting and looking at a lake can slow things down and stretch out time. Getting out and enjoying

Patent Pending Thi iis a gooseneck This k unitit th thatt splits lit iinto t ttwo pieces i ffor access iin or outt the front. There is a 6' alley way in the center of the unit that is 33'4" long. On each end of the alley there are two sets of double 6' gates that open between the split-gooseneck hitch and between the rear axle assemblies. This gives the rancher the ability to tie into the sorting system with any type of portable corral or stock trailer in the field. This unit's hydraulic system will set the unit down on the ground, and when ready to move — lift it up for transport. The hydraulic is run by a 12-volt battery charged by a solar panel. This helps in the fact that a rancher can work cattle in the field without moving the whole herd to a different location to do the sorting and loading out.

Model 125 Fold up gates offer convenience of moving to different locations without completely removing creep pens. You can transport in field or on highway with the gates in the up position.

The “FEED KING” Feeder has 6 key advantages that are standard on each feeder. 1. COMPLETE PORTABILITY allows you to move the feeder empty or loaded to different locations. 2. LEVER ACTION TOP DOOR is easily opened from the ground. Full length top door allows easy filling by your local feed mill, a grinder-mixer, bulk truck, or auger wagon. 3. BUILT-IN FEED AGITATOR allows you to feed rations varying from bulk mixtures (including ground hay) to straight grain. This agitator will break up feed stopping bridges and permits full and even feed flow. 4. LOWER FEED CONTROL DOORS let you control the feed flow into the trough. These doors each work on guide rods and maintain the desired position by means of a wing nut. The feed opening may be varied up to a full eight inches. 5. WIDE, DEEP TROUGH, made of long lasting 12 GAUGE STEEL, feed saver lip reduces feed waste and allows you to feed small and large cattle with better efficiency. 6. FOLD UP CREEP PENS available for 8 foot models allow for easy transport without removing creep pens.

know that when I slow down, I enjoy myself more. I think I am easier on the people around me, and I am probably more fun to be around.

"Slow Down, Summer" nature also provides perspective and balance in harried lives. Spending time outside can literally help us spend time outside of ourselves and our worries and problems. Time outside of ourselves can give us perspective in our lives. Would you consider trying meditation for a change of pace? Meditation isn't just for the "experts." There are many simple forms of meditation. A classic book that provides several easy ways to begin to meditate is How to Meditate by Lawrence LeShan (Little, Brown and Company 1999). You can take as little as ten minutes to meditate if you want. Meditation can be a tool to slow down and refocus. It isn't as hard to do as you may think it is! If meditating isn't your cup of tea, consider taking five to thirty minutes to do nothing. Yes, I mean nothing. I don't mean watching television, doing a routine task, or even starting to mentally compose your to-do list. Taking time to do nothing will slow you down. It may even make you fidgety. Doing nothing for a short while will prepare you to plunge in with new energy for whatever tasks or summer pleasures are waiting for you. Try to live in the moment. Focus totally on doing one thing at a time. I know we are all supposed to multi-task, and sometimes we must. Unfortunately, multi-tasking often leaves us stressed and unfocused. We feel fragmented and splintered. Focusing on one thing at a time helps us to be really present instead of preoccupied. When I am with my kids, I know they can tell if I am really present, or if I am multitasking. It's a "no brainer" to guess which version of Mom they prefer. Slow down. If I can't get it all done today anyway, maybe I can sometimes ease up to be a little kinder to myself. I

Are you saying, "I don't have time?" Try to make time for yourself. Unfortunately, no one else can do this for you. Remember, how you spend the rest of this summer is your choice. Make choices that work for you.

Helpful Time Stretching Time Management Books The three books below present an interesting perspective of our harried society and provide practical tips to improve the quality of your time. Rather than being time management books in the traditional sense, they offer suggestions to change how you perceive and utilize your time.

• Time Shifting--Creating More Time to Enjoy your Life by Stephan Rechtschaffen (Main Street Books, 1997). • Slowing Down in a Speeded Up World by Adair Lara (Conari Press, 1994). • Taking Your Time--Finding Balance in a Hurried World by Eknath Easwaran (Nilgiri Press, 2006) Barbara Tako is a clutter clearing motivational speaker and author of "Clutter Clearing Choices: Clear Clutter, Organize Your Home, & Reclaim Your Life" (O Books, 2010), a seasonally organized book of clutter clearing tips that readers can pick and choose from to fit their personal style and needs. Sign up for her free monthly clutter clearing tips newsletter at www.clutterclearingchoices.com.

Wake up with a little lemon Start your morning off right with a glass of water—and some fresh lemon juice squeezed into it. Lemon juice is an antioxidant, and also a good source of calcium, potassium, and vitamin C. In addition, it may give your immune system a boost and help with digestion throughout the day. If you do squeeze a fresh lemon (as opposed to getting juice from a bottle), be sure to wash it thoroughly ahead of time to clean off any dirt or bacteria that may drift into the juice.

“Food for Thought”

The Positive Outlook Robert Pagliarini

By Steve Huneke

Email: huneke5@rainbowtel.net

Robert Pagliarini is a CBS MoneyWatch columnist and the author of “The Other 8 Hours: Maximize Your Free Time to Create New Wealth & Purpose” and the national best-seller “The Six Day Financial Makeover.” Visit YourOther8Hours.com.

Stop being a wimp and start being fearless Let's just get this out of the way now: You can't get rid of fear or pain but you can minimize it, control it and even use it to create your best life possible with a little practice. If you are in perpetual fear or are avoiding the one thing that terrifies you, there is relief. The solution, however, is counter to what you probably have been doing. Is your fear holding you back at work? Are you afraid of giving a speech? Of stepping up and taking more responsibility? Of raising your hand when you know you are right? Of starting a business? Phil Stutz, one of the authors of a new book called "The Tools: Transform Your Problems into Courage, Confidence, and Creativity" says, "Avoiding pain wouldn't be a problem if we did it once or twice a year, but for most of us it is a deeply engrained habit." I would go even further and suggest that avoiding pain is not only a habit but a disease. A disease that limits your options, opportunities and your life. If you're sick of cowering from fear and having it run (i.e., ruin) your life, there is another option. There are three responses to fear -- fight, flee or freeze. What do most people do? They run. They arrange their days and their lives in order to avoid all of the areas that may cause them pain. But you and I know how well this works. In fact, the more you attempt to avoid fear, the larger and more ominous it becomes. The moment you confront the fear by flipping up the sheets and shining a flashlight under the bed is the moment you have some relief. By avoiding, hiding and running from fear, it becomes worse and worse. In my wealth management firm, where I focus on sudden money recipients, and in my practice as a life coach and therapist, I see this phenomenon play out every single day. You cannot run fast enough or hide well enough to avoid fear. The only way to minimize the fear in your life is to stop fleeing and to start fighting. Go after it with a vengeance. Hunt it down and slay it every opportunity you get. Phil Stutz and co-author Barry Michels offer a solution that helps readers face fear head on. They call it the Reversal of Desire, and it is a tool for when you need to take action on what you have been avoiding. According to the authors, to overcome pain you must desire it. Really? Desire pain? Yes, really. And we're not talking about living with fear or accepting it. You need to wholeheartedly desire it. Why? The authors will tell you that when you desire something you move toward it and the pain shrinks. But how? The tool is to focus intently on the pain you have been trying to escape. Visualize the pain as a dark cloud and silently scream, "Bring it on!" and "I love pain!" as you become one with it. Continue by passionately saying, "Pain sets me free!" and then pass beyond the cloud into a realm of pure light. Do this over and over and over until you have boosted your self-confidence and are ready to act. I'll be honest. I don't get the "pure light" bit but I love the basic concept -- stop running from fear and pain and face it head on. Give yourself a new mantra that you embrace pain and that the pain will set you free. Every time you feel yourself shifting away from pain or fear, stop yourself and try this tool. Continue until you are trembling ... with anticipation.

The Ridiculous Wisconsin Recall Vote This past March I wrote about a very important (and yet ridiculous) recall vote that was going to take place in June. The State of Wisconsin voted to recall what I think is one of the best Governors that state has ever elected. Wisconsin was swelling in debt without an answer, and Governor Scott Walker balanced the budget, partly by doing what the entire United States should do – which is to get spending in balance with the amount of money coming in. Governor Walker has eased up on regulations on businesses, and in return, businesses are confident, proactive, and moving forward. Our country’s work force is aging, and more people are retiring and fewer workers are left to replace them. This equates to a smaller pool of taxpayers. Albert Einstein defined insanity as ‘doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results’. Well, in my opinion, insanity would be to keep on doing what we have been doing the last few years and expecting a different outcome. We have a huge public sector payroll of very important people who are doing jobs our country depends on. I am not insinuating that we should not pay these people fairly – I’m saying we shouldn’t have to pay these people 40% more in benefits than people working in the private sector doing similar jobs – especially when we have so much Federal debt. Why can’t public employees invest in 401K plans for their retirement funds, like most private sector workers do? And do you think workers in the private sector expect raises when the company isn’t making any money? Last month, I wrote that the President had it right when he said CEO pay has gotten out of line. The average CEO pay ratio was once 15 to 1, but is now more like 200 to 1. Ego, pride and greed are not always good. We need our Presidents to start spending our Federal taxes as if that money was coming out of their own pockets.

nately, the 1600 had zapped so much of her energy that she was lagging behind the other runners. As she approached the finish line in what appeared to be last place, the runner in front of her collapsed from exhaustion. Meghan picked the girl up and helped her get to the finish line. The rules of racing would have disqualified her for this move, but the judges did the right thing and let the placing stand – with Meghan Vogel in last place, and the exhausted runner in second to last. Meghan offered the other girl a hand up – not a hand out, which is a huge difference. There is an old adage that states “give someone a fish and they can have a meal, but teach them HOW to fish and they will feed themselves for a lifetime”. Handouts are meant to be temporary and assist someone while they are preparing to ‘fish for themselves’. When the Social Security system was created, it was not intended to be the full retirement vehicle. Medicaid was created to be similar and help people afford medical help. It was not intended for the majority of the population to use for a period of several years. I don't question that we need these things; I do question why so many people are using them. Jesus Christ had compassion for the downtrodden, and we should too. A rising tide should lift all boats. Jesus spoke in John 10:10 of something he brings that is much more positive to look forward to than money and ‘things’. I have come that they may have life, and have it to the fullest! –Steve Huneke

County Fairs same time as that of many of the county fairs. This was done in conjunction with congress to have youngsters learn about agriculture, forestry, conservation, and home economics by participating in these various activities. All have benefited from the association of 4-H and county fairs, but none more than that of livestock. Today, most county fairs have become primarily 4-H Livestock Shows, for which all of 4-H has benefited from the positive development of individual lives. The county fair isn't what it used to be, at least in many parts of the country. Like that of my home county back in North Dakota, they have been reduced in size to that of nothing more than just a 4-H fair. The Burke County fair, located in Flaxton, North Dakota, under the direction of County Extension Agent Dan Folske, has done an admirable job of maintaining its focus on 4-H. Under his leadership, the fair is still the centerpiece of the county and continues to showcase all that is good about our youth.

But for many farmers and ranchers, the county fair is still the biggest show on earth — nearly 3,000 fairs occupying more than a quarter million acres. Maybe the county fair in your county has shrunk in size, but when combined with others across the country; it's still quite a show. No other industrialized country even compares, and no industry is even close to being showcased like that of agriculture. So with 4-H being the centerpiece, it embodies the spirit of farming and ranching like none other.

Over the years 4-H has come to dominate most activities at the county fair. This has been without a doubt, the biggest win and greatest achievement in the history of the county fair. It has provided a platform for which the youth of America can still compete and learn from both their achievements and mistakes.

Having participated in most of the major livestock shows around the country as either a judge or coach, I can assure you that nothing makes the adrenaline pump like that of competing with your peers at the county level — those that you grew up with, listening to folklore of the one that 'woulda, coulda, shoulda' won.

4-H was built on the spirit of competitiveness, for which the county fair has been its greatest contributor. It is on this very principle that 4-H and county fairs can point with pride to an unending parade of champions. And perhaps even more importantly, the stepping stone for moving onto the national scene. But before making that big step, realizing that the real champions are those kids hanging on to the end of those lead ropes; knowing that the way to the winners circle comes by the way of experience.

This is unlike that of the professionals, where strangers meet and compete for perhaps the first time, where there is that element of money and prestige that flows like honey. Under the big top it seems more tarnished and tainted — like that of a mutual admiration society. The animal often becomes nothing more than that of a prop for a Stetson and Lizards.

I can assure you that I speak from experience when I express the accolades of 4-H and association with county fairs. It is with the greatest sense of humility that I credit them both with any and all of the successes I've enjoyed in life. Though I've known my share of failure, it is the experience of those days that gave me direction in life — became the foundation of my vocation, and taught me to always be competitive — to strive to be the best—and to win without always being the winner. May 4-H continue to grow and strengthen the county fairs in the tradition for which it has lasted all these many years. The 4-H (HeadHeart-Hands-Health) organization began in rural America in the early 1900's, about the

There is probably a place for both, but for me, give me the county fair where I can still wake up to the crowing of a rooster down at the poultry barn, walk down to the 4-H food booth for breakfast, and help catch a runaway calf after being sprayed with cold water for the first time. All the time, I knew everyone I met along the way. How could you not like your neighbor, as you strolled down the midway holding your sweetheart's hand, and feeling the magic of the lights, music and festivities? Like many fairs across the country, the Burke County Fair ain't what she used to be. But because of people like Dan Folske and Steve Wickenhauser coming together as complete strangers, the fair may be even better than ever.

PONY TALES By Ponty

The Road Most Traveled To The County Fair Ours was the road most traveled to the county fair, as it was a direct shot from our driveway to the gateway to the fairgrounds. Many a horse knew its way down that two mile stretch of unbridled travel. Likewise, there was always that touch of personal involvement that seemed unending. The horse always had to show up at the fairgrounds bushed and tired enough to seem broke. Whereas the cattle, hogs, sheep, etc. got to ride first class, and arrive early enough to get the most choice of stalls. Being an optimist and proud of my exhibits, it was always important to be located close to the door, where everyone could see each and every accomplishment. Yes — it was entry day at the county fair, and that dirty ol' road was speaking volumes about all the commotion. Not wide enough for two cars to meet meant worn down shoulders and a ditch full of miscues. Add a rainy day to the mix and the dampened spirit of an otherwise exuberant moment becomes challengingly more difficult to navigate. No matter the conditions, at the end of the day you knew you'd had fun. I would lie on my bed in the upstairs bedroom looking down that road to the bright, flashing lights of the carnival. Seldom did I get to stay on the grounds until they pulled the plug on the ferris wheel. That was always the last light I could see from my

bedroom window. Like always, there were winners and losers, but seldom disappointment in the experience. It meant a few horse trades for those that hadn't quite figured out how to have their horse broke before competing; settling for a red or a white, when blue was long overdue. And heading back down that road which was now a whole lot more bumpy and full of chuck holes. The new horse didn't know his way home. If home is where his heart is, he must have been totally confused and bewildered about those same issues that seem to challenge those of us who occasionally still get on the wrong road. Because of my family's involvement in the Burke County Fair, that road was literally traveled from sun up to sundown for days on end — before, during and after the fair and figuratively — for as many as there were days. The road most traveled is often the least appreciated or cared for, but travels a storied life for which lives are changed forever. So it was written: Exodus 3:18 (Like that of the county fair) "then they will heed your voice; and you shall come for three days down that road (journey) to the fair (into the wilderness)."

BALER BELTING

Extension Specialist: MARKETING YOUR HAY Producers have been putting up their first and second cutting alfalfa and starting to cut their grass hay. Although some hay will remain with the operation, there are several growers who plan to market their hay, says Tracey Renelt, Extension Dairy Field Specialist. If you're one of the producers who are deliberating selling your alfalfa or grass hay, Renelt says there are a few things to consider before marketing your product to optimize the price you receive. "First, have you taken an analysis of forage to determine the quality? Sampling should be done as close to the time of utilization of the feedstuff or to the time sale," Renelt said. "This can be done by coring the bales via a hay probe." Hay probes should be placed on the curved side at a 90 degree angle for large round bales, coring towards the center or when coring square bales it should be placed on the butt end of the bales. Care needs to be taken as to not get net wrap or twine included in the core sample. Growers need to core several random bales (20 minimum cores total) in a lot of hay and combine the sample and place the cores into gallon size plastic bag or other container and seal. A total of one-half pound of dry hay from the 20 cores is adequate. "Samples should represent a cutting of hay from a particular field that has been put up under similar conditions, which is also referred to as a hay lot," Renelt said. She reminds growers to label their sample bag adequately with their contact information, including phone number and type of sample you are sending (alfalfa, grass hay, mixed hay, etc) and the type of analysis desired. Growers have several choices when it comes to selecting a lab which can perform an analysis on the sample to determine the feed quality. For lab contact information contact the local SDSU Regional Extension Center or look at the National Forage Testing Association website www.foragetesting.org which provides a list of certified laboratories that perform hay analysis tests. Renelt explains that growers can either perform a wet chemistry analysis or a NIRS (Near Infrared Reflectance Spectroscopy) analysis, which is most commonly done and typically is the quickest and cheapest method.

2 ply - 3 ply Smooth Textured Mini-Roughtop Continuous Chevron Diamond Top Herringbone Roughtop

"So why is this important? As we know, alfalfa and grass quality will vary greatly based on maturity at the time of harvest, conditions it was put up under, and storage methods. Thus, it has given us a way to value the product based upon its quality at the time of utilization," Renelt said. When determining a fair price, Renelt says growers should consider the method they used to put the hay up. "Was the hay put up as a large round bale or small or large square bale or as balage? Was it net wrapped, twine wrapped, or plastic wrapped? Is it plastic twine or sisal twine? Has it sat out and been rained on since harvest or has it been stored in the shed? All these things should be considered when pricing your commodity," she said. The last item growers should consider is the hay's appearance. "Growers need to visually inspect the hay to determine if there is noxious weed seeds present, mold present or if there is foreign material present in the hay," Renelt said. "All of which can change the price received and will not show up on an NIRS analysis. Additionally, if state or locally noxious weed seeds are present it will prevent you from transporting or selling the product according to state law." For growers wanting to know what say is selling for, Renelt suggests they visit a Web site maintained by the USDA which provides a weekly market update on hay markets; www.ams.usda.gov/AMSv1.0/ . Click on the Market News link and then click on Livestock, Meats, Grain and Hay, then click on Hay, under Browse by Commodity. Growers who do not have internet access, can contact their Regional Extension Center. For more information on this and other topics visit the "How To and Maintenance" section at www.farmandlivestockdirectory.com.

Cost effective ways to pump water without electricity The Fleming Hydro-Ram is a tireless, energy saving water pump. The Ram Pump, which is powered by falling water, has been in existence for almost 200 years. The RAM pumped water to households, farms, industries, railroads and towns until the advent of rural electrification and the electric pump. With today’s emphasis on alternative energy sources, the RAM pump has surfaced as a viable means to pump water when falling water is available. In 1978 Richard Fleming developed and marketed the Fleming Hydro-Ram, a lightweight, low friction pump made of PVC material and requiring little or no maintenance. The Fleming Ram will pump a portion of the falling water uphill as high as ten times the “fall” or “drop” of water to the pump. Numerous variables, such as vertical fall vertical lift, size of pump, rate of ram pulsation, length of drive pipe and discharge pipe will affect the amount of water a Ram will pump. In addition to the efficient lightweight fleming Hydro-Rams which are designed to handle falls of water to the pump of up to 20 feet and lift the delivery water up to 100 feet, the Ram Co. also offers a high volume Hydro-Ram made of heavy cast aluminum with an input pipe diameter of 3 inches. This heavy-duty pump is designed to meet the needs of light irrigation and other applications where either larger volumes of water are required or extremely high lifts of water are needed.

Properly installed Rams can be used to supply water during periods of cold weather. If your water source is a flowing stream that never freezes, the pump may be used to supply a constant stream of water to your cattle. Solar-powered Water Pumping Systems are practical and cost-effective in areas where the sun shines. Solar-powered water pumps can be placed next to the pond or other source of water and the water can be pumped where it is needed with heads of 200 feet or less. Solar electric water pumping cuts down on waste because it’s based on natural cycles. Your panels give the most pumping power on the sunniest days - when you need the most water. Solar power is clean. You never have to worry about polluting the groundwater or air with a gas powered pump. Solar-powered water systems take very little maintenance because they have only a few moving parts. Solar panels have a long life - usually 20 to 40 years, and solar water systems never run out of fuel as long as the sun is shining. Pump life and maintenance depend on the type of pump, usage, and water quality. Our pumps have been tested and improved to pump the most water for the least cost and with the least amount of trouble. Each pump carriers our name and we stand behind every one sold.

Working on a ten-to-one ratio, the higher the fall, the greater the height the water can be pumped. The smaller plastic pumps will pump up to three gallons per minute. The 3-inch PVC pump will pump over 5 gallons per minute and the 3-inch metal pump will pump over 10 gallons per minute with proper installation and the right natural conditions.

Call for our brochure and video for a demonstration on how the pumps work and where to purchase pumps. For questions concerning operation or pricing, please write to: Ram Co. 512 Dillard Hill Rd., Lowesville, VA 22967 or phone 434277-8511 or 800-227-8511.

Unique heart formula saves countless lives

A20

He was taught that tasting herbs could detect their medicinal value, but balance and proportion were the keys to producing formulas that were effective and immediate. Jim’s heart attack was not a fluke. He admits to having lived in the fast lane, ignoring the healthier lifestyle of his parents. He considers himself fortunate as nearly half of first time heart attacks end in death. Relying on knowledge acquired over the years, he refused the recommended surgery and instead put together an herbal formula which he immediately applied to himself with outstanding results. In 3 months, his 2” arterial blockage was cleared. Since that time, Jim has shared his formula with thousands around the world who are living testimonials to its curative powers. One of many clients recently wrote: “I would like to tell you that after three months of using Strauss Heart Drops, I am a new man. I am 86 years old, no more the tired feeling I had, my swollen feet are normal again, and my bowel is working normally. Two specialists had told me ‘we can’t help you’.” — Sincerely, Peter A. Wiebe.

The only source of power necessary to run the pumps is the kinetic energy of falling water. Enough water must fall two feet or more through a pipe ten feet long or longer to the Hydro-Ram for it to operate. That’s all that is needed.

Ram pumps are in essence hydraulic engines designed to move water and are capable of supplying up to 4,000 gallons a day.

stretching back to the 17th century. He learned these crafts during childhood, gathering medicinal herbs in the Austrian countryside with his grandmother.

Callicrate ‘WEE’ Bander provides humane care while improving financial returns Fifteen years ago, Mike Callicrate was working on a delayed castration trial with Temple Grandin and its affect on bigger bulls. “We were interested in the effects delayed castration with the Callicrate Bander had on bigger bulls - pain levels, growth, etc.” he recalled. The study went well. Even with late castration, bulls castrated with the original Callicrate Bander went right back to eating and showed minimal signs of stress and pain. Waiting until later to castrate bulls allows the animals the growth benefit associated with natural testosterone. “Today ranchers still, for the most part, castrate early using elastrator bands or a knife. Then they typically implant the calves with a variety of synthetic growth promotants,” said Callicrate. “If they would wait until later they could grow their beef naturally and still have the growth and development benefits of testosterone.”

The Callicrate ‘WEE’ Bander was just released in January of this year and already the response has been very positive. The ‘WEE’ band is tight enough that it shuts off the blood supply and the pain response as well. Studies of high-tension banding have demonstrated that the complete negation of blood flow triggers a natural analgesic effect that blocks pain while minimizing swelling and related complications. “Many ranchers apply an elastrator ring, then drive over the hill and don’t notice what happens next,” he said. “Because elastrator rings are not tight enough, the animals experience pain until swelling finally blocks the blood flow and the pain eventually subsides.” Until that happens, Callicrate said, “these young animals lay on their side in pain, they roll and they paddle. It’s particularly noticeable in lambs and goats. They do a lot of vocalizing. They are in severe pain for a prolonged period of time.”

Just like the original Callicrate Bander, the ‘Wee’ Bander also works on tails and horns. “If it fits through the triangular loop opening, it is the right size,” said Callicrate.

“I recalled that Temple Grandin mentioned that one of the most stressful things you could do to an animal was the use of elastrator rings. They simply don’t get tight enough. The animal swells into it. There was concern about the negative effects this procedure had on vulnerable young animals working to develop their immune systems. A knife was considered the second most stressful way to handle them,” Callicrate said.

The Callicrate ‘WEE’ Bander is consistent with the Callicrate method for hightension banding and is the most stressfree castration option on the market. It is also easy for the person performing the operation. After positioning the loop around the testicles, the loop is released securing the band firmly in place above the testicles. Then a pull handle is retracted applying the proper tension.

Callicrate was explaining the elastrator ring dilemma to friend, Roy Harbach, an experienced aerospace manufacturing engineer. Roy came up with a few ideas, and between them, the Callicrate ‘WEE’ Bander was invented. “We’re talking very young animals. The new Callicrate ‘WEE’ Bander is designed for newborn calves, sheep and goats, up to approximately three weeks of age. It’s for those producers who want to castrate early,” he explained.

Most people who raise livestock really do care about their animals and want to make sure they are treated humanely, The new Callicrate ‘WEE’ Bander provides another tool for allowing better humane care while improving financial returns.

But, after years of promoting delayed castration, he began to realize he wouldn’t convince many more ranchers to delay their castration practices. It was a tradition that was hard to break.

Those comments by Grandin, stayed in the back of Callicrate’s mind for over a decade. Recalling Temple’s comment about how the elastrator ring didn’t provide sufficient tension for complete ligation, a problem the Callicrate Bander finally solved in 1994, he decided to work on a more humane method of castration for young animals that would replace the highly stressful elastrator ring.

Both banders are available at animal health and ranching supply stores. For more information, check out their web site www.CallicrateBanders.com or call 1-800-858-5974.

All States Ag Parts is opening a new location in De Soto, IA in January, stocking thousands of used, new and rebuilt tractor and combine parts.

“Our new facility greatly expands the parts selection available. We have almost 10 times the warehouse space we previously had and are stocking thousands of commonly needed parts. These parts are available for same day pick-up, making it very convenient for area farmers”, said Chad Bagby, New Parts Division Manager for All States Ag Parts. “In addition to the thousands of parts we have in stock, we have over 100,000 new after-market parts that are available with 1 to 2 day delivery”, Bagby said. “The new distribution center in De Soto is already fully stocked and has been shipping orders world-wide since August. We’re excited about being able to open the retail side of business and make the parts available to local farmers too.” De Soto, IA is located approximately 15 miles west of the Des Moines metro area along Interstate 80. The new facility is an expansion and relocation of the operations that were previously handled in Urbandale, IA. In addition to a retail sales area and parts warehouse, the De Soto facility is also the company’s headquarters for internet and catalog sales. “In De Soto we will have a staff of 7 full-time parts experts handling our internet and catalog sales. This has been a tremendous growth area for our company. We ship parts throughout the world,” said Jeff Griggs,

“Our new location is literally a stone’s throw from I-80,” said Terry Burkart, marketing director for All States Ag Parts. “We have great visibility and easy access for farmers and will be providing them with a tremendous selection of parts not previously available in central Iowa. With our new buildings in De Soto, we have over 4,000 sq. ft of office and showroom space and 18,000 sq. ft. of warehouse space. We also have an additional 8 acres of land for future growth.” “One area for immediate expansion in De Soto is the addition of a rebuild shop for carburetors, distributors and other small parts,” said Griggs. The new rebuild shop will combine with All States Ag Parts other rebuilding operations to offer a full complement of rebuilt ag parts including cylinder heads, crankshafts, transmissions, hydraulic pumps, scv’s, clutches, water pumps, straw choppers, final drives and more. Each of these parts is covered by an industry-leading 1-year warranty and is rebuilt by trained technicians. “A salvage yard is not currently in the plans for De Soto”, said John Dyke, the owner of All States Ag Parts, “but our seven other locations each include salvage yards ranging in size up to 50 acres. The De Soto operation will have quick-access to the used parts from these yards with most parts available in a day or two.” The new Desoto, IA store can be reached by calling 866-609-1260. The showroom is located at 10 Ellefson Drive, just north of Interstate 80. All States Ag Parts can be found on the internet at www.TractorPartsASAP. com.

#7. American Eagle: Pump action is a huge 1 and 3/4” stroke some call intermittent. Most pumps are. The Eagles huge volume of air creates the most effective method of water circulation. More air, more circulation. The competition: Only 1/2” stroke, also intermittent. Less volume of air results in much less water circulation. See our “Compare” video on our web site (www.pondaeration.com) to see why 100% of who compare ‘hands on’ buy the American Eagle.

#3. American Eagle: High volume is more important than high pressure. American Eagle puts out only 8 to 9 psi but can supply up to six diffusers. The competition: Diaphragm more pressure, but can only supply a maximum of two diffusers. #4. American Eagle: 8 to 9 psi will supply one diffuser 14 to 16 feet. The competition: Diaphragms will pump deeper but with very little volume of air. The deeper you pump, the less volume. #5. American Eagle: Bellow warranty, five years. The competition: Diaphragm warranty–ZERO! #6. American Eagle: 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1-year warranty with an emailed picture of the defective part–and it ships out FREE the same day. The competition: Diaphragm warranty policy states the part may need to be shipped from as far away as Canada to be evaluated– then determined if it is the customers fault. Any new part will be shipped at the customer’s expense for parts, plus shipping both ways. (This can take months. We know a Diaphragm customer still waiting over a year.)

Irrigation engines can be more affordable with a fuel mixer Realize saving of up to $3.00 per hour, per engine using a Dual Fuel Mixer Just ten years ago, diesel fuel was the fuel of choice for irrigation engines. At that time, is was much cheaper than natural gas. Producers started purchasing diesel engines and abandoning natural gas.

savings has been very substantial. Hardy said producers have told him they have savings of over $3.00 per hour by using the mixer over straight diesel, and have had gains of 100-150 rpm from their engines. Another benefit they have reported is oil change intervals could be longer with the fuel mix versus the straight diesel. The Hardy Duel Fuel Mixer comes in a kit, and the cost is $1,595. For more information visit www.donhardyengines.com; or call 806-983-3774.

Today, things are different. Diesel fuel has tripled in price since 2000. Producers had to do something to make operating irrigation engines more affordable. They started mixing natural gas with diesel, and discovered they saved $80-100 on average per day, per engine.

New scale option for John Deere DN345 fertilizer and lime spreaders

Don Hardy, owner of Don Hardy Fuel Efficient Engine Services in Floydada, Texas, developed a dual fuel mixer for diesel engines to combine natural gas and diesel. The fuel mixing process could then be done economically, by all producers.

New for 2012, Scale-Tec introduces the John Deere DN345 Fertilizer Spreader scale kit, that includes six load cells, wiring, mounting brackets and a waterproof, backlit readout. The installation time is 8 hours, with no modification or welding required.

In the spring of 2007, Hardy and Leon New, an engineer with the Texas Cooperative Extension Service in Amarillo, tested this mixer on three engines in Floyd County. Two engines were Case IH engines–one waas a turbo-charged, and the other engine, a 4-cylinder non-turbo. The third engine was a John Deere 4T100. During the testing, straight diesel was used, followed by a diesel and natural gas mix. The dual fuel outperformed the diesel on all three engines. The Case 4-cylinder had a savings of $1.06 per hour; the John Deere saved $2.40 per hour, and the Case turbo saved a whopping $3.55 per hour. From a fuel savings standpoint, mixing propane and diesel might have been yet an even cheaper mix–but propane proved to be more cost prohibitive, and made the engines run hotter. Hardy says the mixture of natural gas and diesel is “the way to go”, and his mixer is designed to reduce the high costs of running irrigation engines. In the past few years, several producers using the mixer have reported their fuel cost

Phase Converters provide three-phase power from singlephase lines at a fraction of the installation and operating cost of running three-phase utility lines to your property In 1966 Mr. Colin Johnstone, owner of Johnstone Mfg., needed to run some three phase machines but only had single phase power available. At that time he was designing and manufacturing lighting and scorekeeping equipment for NBC Studios for various game shows, specializing in finding simple solutions to complex requirements. He applied this same expertise to the problem of not having the right power to run his machines. As a result, he developed a phase converter to run his three phase equipment on his existing single phase power. He soon noticed that others had need of phase converters, and by 1968 was producing Phase-A-Matic™ phase converters as a side line to his other endeavors.

Uses include: metalworking and woodworking equipment, farm/ agricultural equipment, pumps, compressors, refrigeration, elevators, printing machines, rectifiers, lasers, radar, EDM machines, MRI, tanning booths, transmitters, welders, conveyors, hydraulic pumps, flywheels, ovens, dough mixers, laundry machines, and virtually every type of 3-phase machine, including CNC/PLC equipment, when used with the PHASE-AMATIC™ Voltage Stabilizer. Phase-A-Matic, Inc. may carry the largest stock of phase converters in the world. We supply the major catalog houses with available product. It is not unusual to receive an order for 500+ Phase Converters by 2:00 PM and ship them the same day. We maintain a consistent high-count stock, ready to ship, meeting the demand here in the USA and for our ever expanding world-wide sales - shipping to countries all around the globe. We even maintain stock on very large Rotary Converters - 75 & 100 HP in both 220V and 460V. -We are ready when you are!

Simplicity of design; soldered connections

uses

Keeping the design exceptionally simple reduces the risk of electrical connection failure to almost zero since these are some of the most common causes of failure. We use only soldered connections with no mechanical electrical connections like spade clips, terminals or screws which can vibrate loose or corrode over time. There are no start capacitors, relays or contactors with connections which can come loose or arc and weld the contacts causing failure of the contactor and the start capacitors, and perhaps even the rotary converter or your equipment. Because of this we do not have circuit board failures caused by spikes generated by the magnetic contactors as some of our competitors do.

The PHASE-A-MATIC™ failure rate is practically zero because the rotors are specifically designed and manufactured for rotary converter use. However, some of our competitors emphasize that rotors often fail. This is because they machine standard electric motors, modifying and thereby weakening standard electric motor rotors, which were not originally designed to be used as a phase converter. Testing before shipment

We know that technical support is important for your power conversion success. Our technical support team is dedicated to assist you with every aspect of your converting needs from choosing the right converter to any help you may need in the proper installation and operation of the converter on your machine. Our technical expertise is derived from over 45 years of experience in phase converter systems. We have amassed a huge database of information on virtually every kind of application possible, from very basic to the most sophisticated of applications.Baldor Electric/PHASE-A-MATIC™ Design The rotary portion of our converter is proprietary, custom built to our specifications by Baldor Electric, one of the largest and most trusted motor manufacturers in the world, with warranty stations nationwide and worldwide. It is a true phase converter and not a modified electric motor as most of our competitors

The Rotor

Sales of phase converters increased so rapidly that by the early 1970’s he was devoting his full time to the manufacture of phase converters. Expanding his staff and facilities, he could barely keep up with the phenomenal growth in sales. All the while, he continued to make refinements in reliability and ease of installation of the phase converters. In 1982 the company was incorporated as Phase-A-Matic, Inc. At that time a line of Rotary Phase Converters was added to our line of products. Through innovative manufacturing techniques we have been able to continue to provide a high quality product at an economical price.

use. Many years of testing, changing and developing the converter in conjunction with Baldor’s engineers has produced a very simple and trouble-free converter with extremely low idle current and low noise level. Many of our customers confirm that our rotary converters are the quietest and most trouble-free available.

Every converter is performance tested before shipment and assigned a serial number. These records are kept for review if any questions should ever arise about the performance specifications. The front end loader style bucket attaches to the rear of your tractor using the included 3 point hitch trailer mover/ toolbar. Pat’s Easy Mover provides a lower cost way for any tractor with a 3 point hitch to complete many of the tasks that were previously only possible with expensive front end loaders. The Pat’s Easy Mover is tough enough to dig into the ground or scoop piles of dirt or other debris, while the dumping mechanism makes Pat’s Easy Mover ideally suited for scooping and evenly spreading rock on driveways, leveling dirt piles or spreading mulch. The system also includes a removable tailgate which makes it a transport box, well suited for carrying fencing materials, tools, sprayers, firewood or anything you need to carry with you to do a job or move from place to place. The tailgate is easily stored inside the bucket when not in use. The Pat’s Easy Mover can be easily removed from the trailer mover/toolbar, a useful tool in its own right, by removing two mounting pins. The trailer mover/ toolbar comes with a 2” receiver hitch as well as place to mount a gooseneck ball (ball not included).

If you know what you need, just call us to order. We normally have all sizes in stock, ready to ship. We can also locate a dealer in your area. Visit our website at http:// phase-a-matic.com today.
