he first time you meet Donald Zolan, you have the feeling of meeting an old friend whom you just haven't seen for awhile. His warmth, candor and interest in others can disguise the fact that he's one of our nation's most talented and popular artists. A very positive and forward looking man, he's at peace with himself and his world. The love and joy you see in his paintings are a sincere expression of himself. A fifth generation artist, Zolan began drawing at age three, and, by age five, was working in watercolors and winning local competitions. He won his first major art competition at age thirteen and was awarded a scholarship to the prestigious Art Institute of Chicago. By sixteen, he won a scholarship to Chicago's American Academy of Art. Full-time formal training began after high school with a full scholarship to the American Academy of Fine Art. Upon graduation, he was selected to apprentice with Haddon Sundblom, a famous Chicago illustrator most known for his Coca-Cola Santa Claus. Zolan moved into the field of commercial art, where he was a great success over the next twelve years. His true love, however, was his fine art paintings which were shown in leading galleries and museums around the world. By the 1970’s, he finally established his own gallery on Nantucket Island. In 1977, the President of the Bradford Exchange visited a Chicago gallery and was so impressed with Zolan's paintings of children that he decided to commission a new work for a collector plate. One April afternoon, Zolan was watching his son blowing a dandelion in the backyard. Inspired by the wonder and fascination of his young son blowing a dandelion, he created his famous painting – Erik and Dandelion - which launched his thirty year collectible career. This new work immediately became Plate of the Year, the first of countless awards Zolan won as a limited edition collectible artist. Zolan's work soared in popularity with collectors and his images were soon licensed on a wide range of products by more than 25 national and international companies, spanning the globe from the Americas, to Europe, and to Australia. In 2008, Zolan introduced a new collection of Santa Claus paintings inspired by his apprenticeship with Haddon Sund-

Zolan is continually inspired by his happy childhood in Brookfield, IL. His parents fully supported and nurtured their son's talent, and, by his own admission, Zolan had an idyllic childhood. In his own words, Zolan recalls, "Each painting is emblematic of my happy and carefree childhood days growing up in the Heartland. Life was an adventure with my dog, Skipper, always discovering something new and exciting in my little world.” All of Zolan’s paintings rekindle a spark of nostalgia in each of us as the warmth and richness of his work touches the heart and enlivens the soul. This love and joy is reflected in his works. The unique combination of a subject matter so close to his heart and incredible talent, nurtured through years of technical training and experience, make Zolan's paintings among the most popular in the world. Consider Using a Tedder to Minimize Forage Drying Time One of the most important factors in the cutting and harvesting of forages is minimizing drying time. With the unpredictable weather patterns farmers experience, getting forage crops cut and quickly harvested must be done efficiently. To accomplish this goal, incorporating a tedder into the haying implement lineup is of utmost importance. Spreading out freshly mowed windrows helps evaporate moisture from the crop before a baler takes to the field. The technology designed in modern tedders aims to spread the material evenly with each pass, and prevent damage to the turf. “The point of the tedder is that it spreads the crop

evenly across the mowing width and gives it maximum exposure to the light and air to help it dry down faster,” says Matt Jaynes, CLAAS Product Coordinator. “A tedder will also make forages more consistent. If it’s lumped in a windrow, it will be wetter on the bottom than on the top.” Tedders aim to fluff the crop as much as possible without causing damage. This process is done by use of equal-length steel tines that toss the forage but put 25 percent less ash into the crop. One area that can be problematic is not fully investigating the size of the shaft. While the tedder may appear large and high capacity, the shaft inside could be small and more prone to breaks.

Designed to sweep broken stalks & leaves into the header to ELIMINATE dangerous & dirty manual CLEAN OUT!

While the end goal of a tedder is the same for all users, the path taken to achieve that goal can vary by operator and crop.

“Some people let the crop shrink after mowing, then ted the field the next morning when there’s light dew. Others will ted right after going through with the mower,” Jaynes says. “Typically I like to let it sit for a day and then go after it the next morning. That way you will often have maximum leaf retention and the crop will be a little fluffier.” From a crop standpoint, production practices can vary from silage to dry hay. Those harvesting silage ted and then follow with a rake and baler shortly after, as they aim to spread out the crop and dry it down to a desirable level for silage. For those planning to harvest dry hay, it is more ideal to wait until baling day to take a rake through and compile the lower moisture tedded forage. Mattracks Introduces the New 105 and 150 Plus MATTRACKS® recently introduced the new MT PLUS ™ model, available in 2013 as part of the 105 and 150 MT series. Mattracks® has been converting 4-wheel drive trucks, SUVs, tractors, ATVs and UTVs for more than 20 years. When customers requested an even “larger footprint” than is available in the market today for certain applications, Mattracks’ engineers developed the new MT PLUS ™, adding to the already extensive Mattracks® model lineup.

network. The new hitch features B&W’s popular Turnoverball design and provides the same ease of installation and simplicity of use that the North American trailer-hauling marketplace has come to know and expect.

B&W’s GNRK 1314 aftermarket gooseneck trailer hitch can be purchased online, and a dealer locator is also available at www.Turnoverball.com/find-adealer.

Many 2013 RAM 3500 owners have been stunned to discover that the accessories necessary for their factory-installed gooseneck trailer hitch to function are simply not yet available. Preliminary data also suggests that if owners did not specify RAM’s towing package, they might have to pay for the bed of their new truck to be removed in order to install the MOPAR gooseneck hitch. Either way, the RAM owner’s hitch is rendered inoperable because there is currently no hitch ball available.

____________________________________

“This unfortunate set of circumstances has caused inconvenience and confusion among my customers,” Hayden Elder, principle of Elder Dodge in Athens, Texas, said. “Our customers prefer the B&W brand over any other gooseneck hitch, and I’m grateful that we have their GNRK 1314 hitch available now, as the RAM 3500s begin hitting our lot.”

The new MT PLUS ™ has more “track” on the ground, which will provide greater performance in deep snow or soft soil conditions. With a 21” longer footprint on hard surface and 33” more in soft soil conditions compared to the standard 105/150 series; the rear track on the MT PLUS ™ provides unbelievable floatation in deep snow, sand, mud, swamps or any challenging terrain. Its self cleaning system allows the snow, sand, rocks, or any other debris to be ejected from the inside of the track. Coupled with the tread pattern and built in suspension the traction is outstanding, while providing more than 50% greater footprint compared to the standard 105/150 series. The PLUS system will fit most ½ ton pickups and large SUVs. For more information visit www.mattracks.com. ____________________________________

B&W Trailer Hitches Delivers First Aftermarket Gooseneck Hitch for 2013 RAM 3500 Trucks America’s number-one-selling gooseneck hitch manufacturer puts popular Turnoverball solution in distribution, while OEM struggles with product delays. B&W Trailer Hitches, a leading U.S.-based manufacturer of heavy-duty, engineered trailer hitches and aftermarket truck/trailer accessories, announced that it has begun shipping its new GNRK 1314 aftermarket gooseneck trailer hitch to its nationwide distribution A4

Enter B&W Trailer Hitches and their new GNRK 1314 aftermarket gooseneck trailer hitch. An online video demonstrates that the GNRK 1314 installs much like the other B&W gooseneck trailer hitch kits that have become number-one sellers among truck dealers and end-users alike. B&W’s new hitch is comparably priced with its other gooseneck offerings, with an MSRP of $494 and fits on any 2013 RAM 3500 without a factory-installed hitch prep package. Best of all, the new hitch comes with B&W’s signature Turnoverball feature, which allows the hitch ball to invert in its mounting socket when not in use to stow securely and flush with the bed of the truck. In contrast to B&W’s Turnoverball design, the RAM’s OE hitch ball, when it eventually becomes available, will need to be removed from its mounting socket and stowed elsewhere. Removing the hitch ball from its mounting location leaves it prone to being lost, misplaced and generally becoming a storage nuisance. “Since we introduced the Turnoverball in 1992, gooseneck users have grown accustomed to turning over and stowing the hitch ball where they use it, and it’s hard for us to imagine why the OE would revert to an outdated, less practical design,” Travis McCall, product engineer for B&W Trailer Hitches, said. “Our new GNRK 1314 honors B&W’s reputation for creating easy-to-install hitches that are easy to use as well.” B&W’s GNRK 1314 aftermarket gooseneck trailer hitch has been carefully engineered to match the towing capacity of the 2013 RAM 3500. The product has been extensively tested and is certified as meeting the vehicle tow rating (VTR). As with any towing scenario, B&W strongly recommends that users never exceed a VTR.

SoilMAX Plus Grows Crops with Less Water While Eliminating Soil Erosion Terra Novo is adding SoilMAX Plus to its SoilMAX line of soil-stabilizing polymers for agricultural applications. The new formulation stabilizes farm, turf and nursery soil structures for increased water infiltration and nutrient movement through the root zone while protecting the soil from crusting and erosion. SoilMAX Plus can be easily added directly to soil, worked into the ground during field preparation before planting or the first irrigation. SoilMAX keeps soil soft and conditioned, stops the formation of a crust, reduces the amount of water needed for irrigation and decreases the labor and equipment costs typically associated with ground preparation. SoilMAX Plus stops field erosion, keeping pesticides, fertilizers and nutrients from running off. By working directly on the soil, SoilMAX Plus reduces costs and maintains aggregate stability and porosity so that water goes directly to the root zone rather than running off. The result is premium performance and profits at a fraction of the cost of conventional mechanical treatments. Continued on next page

t what’s new

“SoilMAX Plus offers agricultural customers the best of both worlds, because it’s incredibly cost-effective and also delivers superior performance and increased profits,” says Scott Harrison, president of Terra Novo. “Increasingly stringent regulatory requirements have led to an explosion in the popularity of our userfriendly SoilMAX line, because it assists in Clean Water Act compliance by eliminating sediment laden or polluted runoff. Furthermore, by stabilizing the soil, it allows for more efficient use of water.” Terra Novo manufactures four different additives: SoilMAX, SoilMAX Plus, SoilMAX Liquid and SoilMAX Plus Liquid. SoilMAX and SoilMAX Plus can be worked into the soil before the first irrigation, while SoilMAX Liquid and SoilMAX Plus Liquid are ideal for use in sprinklers and low-flow irrigation systems. A lighter version called Agriflo can be easily mixed with fertilizers, sprayed directly on seed beds or applied during irrigation to prevent crusting and improve germination. Every Terra Novo product is specifically formulated by engineers and chemists to solve site-specific problems. Farmers, land and home developers, oil and gas companies, forest services and departments of transportation utilize its unique product formulations to accomplish their goals affordably and without harming the environment. The company has completed successful projects for brands including the Federal Highway Administration, Chevron, Shell, Exxon Mobil, First Solar, the U.S. Forest Service and many well-known home builders. Case studies and performance tests support the products’ efficacy and attest to the company’s commitment to continual improvement. Introducing

“M. haemolytica and P. multocida, which are normal inhabitants of the nasal passages in most healthy calves, are two of the most damaging and costly pathogens responsible for BRD,” says Adam Yankowsky, business unit manager for livestock products, AgriLabs. “That’s why veterinarians and producers have included proven PULMO-GUARD brand vaccines in their respiratory-disease-prevention programs. Reformulated PULMO-GUARD PH-M will continue to offer safe, smooth protection.” Researchers conducted field studies on PULMOGUARD PH-M, and found minimal swelling at the site of vaccination and no adverse reactions. About onethird of the calves studied were 30-day-old Holstein calves. “The researchers reported no calves missed a bottle post-vaccination,” says Dr. Roger Winter, technical services veterinarian, AgriLabs. “Reformulating with a low-reactive, water-soluble adjuvant means PULMOGUARD PH-M is easy on young calves.” Research in 2-month-old beef calves challenged with M. haemolytica showed those vaccinated with PULMO-GUARD PH-M had 80 percent fewer lung lesions and lower mortality than non-vaccinated calves.

NFL Star Chad Greenway Advocates America Needs Farmers Chad Greenway, a small-town Iowa farm boy, now a dominant defensive player in the National Football League (NFL), is the latest football star teaming up with the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation (IFBF) and the University of Iowa (UI) to promote the America Needs Farmers (ANF) campaign. Greenway was raised on a small South Dakota farm that his parents still operate. Today, he is one of the NFL’s most prolific linebackers, but underneath his jersey and pads is a farmer passionate about highlighting the vital role agriculture plays in our country. “The importance of farmers is never going to go away. The foundation of human nature is farming: being able to produce something from the land, being able to feed your family, feed your community, and feed the world,” Greenway said. “It’s the backbone of America. It’s what we’re all about. It’s the fabric of our being.”

Mahindra USA Announces the Women in Ag Scholarship Winners Scholarship funds awarded to four outstanding women Mahindra USA, Inc. is proud to announce the winners of its 2012 / 2013 scholarship program benefiting young women studying agriculture, the “Mahindra Tractors’ Women in Ag Scholarships.” Since 2007, Mahindra USA has sponsored the Women in Ag Scholarship Program to recognize the important role that women play in the future of the agricultural industry.

Greenway joins an impressive list of former Hawkeye players who support ANF, a campaign launched by legendary Hawkeye coach Hayden Fry in 1985 during the Farm Crisis. The ANF emblem is displayed on Hawkeye football players’ helmets today and is a source of pride for the former Hawkeye great. “I’m proud that I went to the University of Iowa and that ANF is part of what the UI symbolizes and tries to push. I’m proud that the people of Iowa can turn on the Hawkeye game and be proud of the people we are putting on the field who wear that emblem,” said Greenway.

Greenway says the life lessons learned on the farm help motivate him on the football field. “There are so many levels where hard work and growing up on a farm can correlate to football. I’ve used all the principles I gained growing up on a farm to really push me in the profession that I’m in now,” said Greenway, star linebacker of the Minnesota Vikings entering his eighth season in the league. “The game of football is unique and tests you in many ways; it tests your will; it tests your ability to get up from being knocked down; it tests your work ethic, for sure, and the wantto that you have.”

With most people two to three generations removed from the family farm, IFBF and the UI joined forces to promote the ANF message and talk to consumers about the food, fuel and fiber raised by farmers. “Consumers want to know more about where their food comes from and the ANF effort is just one way farmers are helping build that understanding,” said Craig Hill, IFBF president.

“It’s been an incredible privilege, personally and on

We are thrilled to play a part in assisting them and their families in furthering their agricultural education,” said Franklin.

FSA Administrator Urges Producers to Enroll in DCP/ACRE FSA Administrator Juan M. Garcia encouraged farmers and ranchers to enroll for the 2013 Direct and Counter-Cyclical Payment Program (DCP) or the Average Crop Revenue Election Program (ACRE) before the deadline. Producers who wait until the last minute to sign up could face increased waiting time in FSA county offices. “We understand that producers have gotten busy, but they can’t forget to visit their county office and sign up for DCP or ACRE,” said Garcia. “Just as farmers and ranchers plan their spring plantings, producers should plan to schedule an appointment to visit their USDA Service Center at the earliest possible time. It’s best to complete the paperwork now rather than to stand in line the day before the deadline,” advised Garcia. The sign-up for both programs began Feb. 19, 2013. The deadline to sign up for ACRE is June 3, 2013. The DCP sign up period ends Aug. 2, 2013.

Victoria Riback from Molalla, OR will be a freshman at Texas A&M University – College Station majoring in Agronomy & Crop Science. Stephanie Tarlowe from Hackettstown, NJ is a freshman at Cornell University majoring in Animal Science.

In partnership with The National FFA Organization, the Mahindra scholarship winners were chosen based on their passion and involvement in agricultural studies as well as their academic performance and leadership. Every year, Mahindra USA teams up with the National FFA Organization to sponsor select young women involved in agriculture and their pursuit of a college education.

The 2013 DCP and ACRE program provisions are unchanged from 2012, except that all eligible participants in 2013 may choose to enroll in either DCP or ACRE for the 2013 crop year. This means that eligible producers who were enrolled in ACRE in 2012 may elect to enroll in DCP in 2013 or may re-enroll in ACRE in 2013 (and vice versa). “Keeping the Family Farm in the Family”

Necessary Topics for a Successful Estate Plan By Michael Baron

Owner/Manager of Great Plains, Diversified Services, Inc., Bismarck, ND

What Should You "Get on Paper" if You Remarry? Dear Michael: My wife died a few years back and I've been thinking about getting remarried. Outside of the normal family issues that arise with a new wife – and with kids from a prior marriage – what other things do I need to consider? She has considerable assets of her own and I farm together with my son and daughter-in-law. We're not two moon-eyed kids, so tell it to us straight what we need to discuss and get on paper before we get married – Second Time Around very few people think beyond the person they are marrying. Divorce is what everyone focuses on, but death can really be the issue.

Dear Second Time: Congratulations on finding someone to spend your life with. It's good to see. As per your questions – things to discuss and what things need to be done prior to the marriage? I'll talk about those as well as things you need to do after the marriage – or things you can do after the marriage if you forgot to do them before!

What happens if you die – without a pre-nup agreement – and your spouse's affairs are being handled by a power of attorney, or one of her children, or any number of people who have the official capacity to make decisions for her (Medicaid)? You and your new spouse may have had no intention to split assets at death. You may have both written a will being very explicit about not having assets pass to her children – or her assets to yours.

First of all, everyone has heard of a pre-nuptial agreement. Pre-nups are essentially agreements that state what each of you had before you got married gets to stay yours if you don't stay married and/or (perhaps more importantly) after you die.

If someone else is pulling her strings after you die, or she is deemed incompetent or is being manipulated, after your death, most state laws allow the spouse (or her caretaker) to keep up to fifty percent of the estate plus a spousal allowance (typically one hundred and twenty thousand dollars in assets in addition to the fifty percent).

In order for a pre-nup to be valid, both of you should have separate attorneys – each representing one of you. Once you've come up with a list of all of your stuff and she's come up with a list of all of her stuff, your attorneys can exchange lists and make certain nothing looks out of place and nothing is forgotten. Things like mineral acres. I bet those have come up a few times in the last few years.

Most people when they get married the second time later on in life are mature enough to have the “talk” about who owns what and who gets what, but unless it's written into a pre-nup, just writing wills won't do the trick – unless you're "lucky” enough to go on the same day!

Once everyone has agreed who owns what – and you complete this in a ‘reasonable' period of time before the wedding (don't slide it under her dressing room door as she's getting into her wedding gown!) - everyone can sign on and get ready for the big day.

For example, you may have a pre-nup, but if you write checks out of a joint account for land taxes, insurance, upkeep, maintenance or any other costs of "ownership', you are likely on your way to voiding your prenuptial agreement. Why? Because if your spouse is "contributing” towards these costs, then it can be argued she must have had ownership in the assets. Best idea – keep separate accounts for your separate assets. When you receive income from your assets, deposit the income into this account, pay the bills for the ownership issues from this account, and then decide how much each of you want to contribute to a joint account for living expenses and things you want to acquire jointly. Every time you get a bill, decide if it's your expense for your stuff, an expense for her stuff, or something for both of you and then pay from the correct account. June is the month for weddings – so plan ahead – and have a wonderful marriage. ________________________________________

The other thing about pre-nups is they have to be managed after the marriage. If you have a single joint account, or even if you have separate accounts and both of you contribute to one account, you have to be very careful how

FARM and RANCH LIFE By Dr. Michael R. Rosmann

The Changing Landscape of Agricultural Safety and Health There are gradual but significant shifts occurring in the way agriculture is being conducted, regulated and in the way agricultural research is being funded. These shifts reflect broad political differences among elected leaders and within the public. A stalwart conservative voice has emerged which demands more free enterprise and “less government,” which translates into fewer regulations and less funding for agricultural priorities at the federal level and in many states, along with steady or lower taxes on corporate enterprises and individual producers. The roots of the conservative movement can be traced mainly to the Reagan presidential era. An 18 percent reduction of federal food safety inspectors this year due to the budget sequester can be attributed to this movement. Simultaneously, a strident and emerging “liberal left” advocates for reduced commodity price supports but stronger governmental roles in environmental and producer health and safety protections and research. The liberal movement is aligned with proponents of progressive taxation, organic and sustainable farming, and worker and consumer rights. The roots of this movement are sometimes labeled as “socialism,” and have antecedents in the eras of FDR and JFK. Regardless of how one feels about the pros and cons

Many federally funded programs affecting agriculture are being cut back or eliminated. During recent meetings of the Regional Advisory Committee for the Great Plains Center for Agricultural Health (See: www.public-health.uiowa.edu/GPCAH/) I learned all eleven regional and national centers for agricultural safety and health training and several other categories of grant-funded research are slated for elimination, along with a number of state-funded public health regulatory agencies.

Because most corporate and private entities have gains from their investments as their aim, it is not clear if they will support vital agricultural safety and health efforts.

For the past 24 years, many agricultural safety and health programs were part of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health budget, but they are not included in the budget proposals currently being considered by Congress. These programs have supported a substantial share of the research, faculty salaries and graduate student stipends at mostly university-based centers.

Examples of topics that need to be scientifically evaluated include, but are not limited to, the following:

These programs contributed to significant strides in agricultural safety and health. For example, their research has established that 65 percent of agricultural-related fatalities are due to roll-overs of tractors, skid loaders and ATVs, almost always when the machines do not have roll bars or cabs for protection. In Scandinavian countries where these are mandated, operator deaths have almost been eliminated. Another outcome over the past score of years is the development of programs to educate farm families about the dangers associated with farming and how to minimize them, resulting in significant reductions of fatalities of children and adults while engaged in farming.

Changes are occurring on the state landscape as well. To illustrate, taking photographs of consolidated animal feedlot operations (CAFOs) without permission from the owners has been banned in several states.

What alternative funding sources are available for agricultural research, safety and health? With reduced federal and state funding, agricultural education and research institutions increasingly have to depend on private foundations, individuals and corporate entities for financial support.

Federal funds no longer make behavioral counseling available to curtail farm stress and farming-related suicides, both of which are serious problems in the agricultural community.

State regulatory officials cannot take on-site or aerial photos of CAFOs in restricted areas. Animal rights proponents claim CAFOs have something to hide, such as inhumane conditions for animals, while proponents of these measures assert certain photographers tell a false story about actual animal treatment.

Given their profit motive, will corporate and private entities pick up the financial slack to support the kinds of unbiased research and education needed to advance the safety and health of food, the environment and people?

The long term effects of growing genetically modified organisms on environmental health and on consumers (a growing body of research findings is accumulating in Europe; few investigations in this area are being pursued in the U.S) The effects of long-term glyphosate use on the environment and on consumers (little research has been done in this area, and it is a priority, given its intensive use in agriculture) The effects of seed treatments for insects and fungi on beneficial insects (e.g., honey bees), animals and humans, and How to make workers safer in enclosed spaces such as grain bins. What are your thoughts about what needs to be done to improve the health and safety of agricultural producers, consumers, and the environment? What should be researched and who should pay for it? This column is a good forum to consider producers’ ideas. _______________________________________________________ Dr. Michael R. Rosmann brings the perspective of a farmer in “Farm And Ranch Life”. Dr. Rosmann grew up on a mixed grain and livestock farm in Western Iowa where he experienced enjoyable hard work and 4-H, and witnessed the stresses that accompany farming and farm life. Dr. Rosmann developed the first mental health response in Iowa to the Farm Crisis of the 1980s. In 2001, Dr. Rosmann, along with partners in seven states, founded the nonprofit network, AgriWellness Inc. AgriWellness conducted research and provided counseling services to farm people. It became clearer that a specialized field – agricultural behavioral health – was needed to respond to the unique problems experienced by farmers, ranchers and others involved in agriculture. Seven Tips to Keep Sows Eating Through the Summer Promote consistent summer feed consumption for positive impact potential on sow breeding, lactation and long-term performance.

Heat stress can have a major impact on sow performance and longevity and sows may feel heat stressed at temperatures lower than one might think. As temperatures surpass 70º F, depending upon humidity[1], sows can start to experience adverse effects from heat stress, such as reduced feed intake. Changes in the ration can help sows continue to consume the nutrients they need to maintain performance and body condition levels. Sows are most comfortable between 45 and 70º F, with 60 to 65º F being optimal, according to Vern Pearson, PhD, swine nutritionist for Purina Animal Nutrition. “The combination of hot temperatures and humidity results in a high heat stress index and can cause problems for the sow if we don’t account for it,” Pearson says, explaining that heat stressed sows have a greater potential to experience seasonal infertility, smaller litter sizes, decreased embryo survival rates and death losses. Heat stress can also impact boars, resulting in lower libido, lower sperm counts, abnormal sperm and smaller litters.[2] Heat stress can be minimized by adjusting the temperature in the facility. Strategies for adequate air movement and cooling include: ventilation systems, air conditioning units, drip cooling, fresh-air inlets, cool cells, nose coolers and water sprinkler systems. No matter the system selected, Pearson advises producers to measure temperatures at the sow’s level and to keep temperatures between 60 and 70 degrees F. In addition to environmental controls, sow nutrition plays a key role in sow productivity through the summer. “There’s a direct correlation between heat and reduced feed intake,” Pearson says. “Heat stressed sows will eat less because digestion gives off body heat and makes the sows even warmer. “Lactating sows will first maintain their litters and then use nutrients from their feed for body condition; sows that are not eating can lose body condition quickly,” he adds. “An under-conditioned sow will be less likely to breed back, so we need to keep the sows eating and in good condition.”1 The following are sow nutrition tips from Purina Animal Nutrition to keep sows eating consistently throughout the summer: 1. Promote consistent feed consumption. “In the summer, the biggest issue is reduced feed consumption in lactation,” Pearson says. “Adjust the ration to avoid those decreases by feeding sows so they maintain a body condition score (BCS) of 3 on a 5-point scale through all stages.” Summer feed additives, like True Appetizer® Feed from Purina Animal Nutrition, can be added to the sow diet to help maintain dry matter intakes. 2. Feed sows according to stage. BCS is important for all sows, so an ad libitum ration is suggested during lactation with limit-feeding during gestation. “Don’t over-feed during gestation; feed to maintain condition,” Pearson says. “Sows that are over-fed in gestation may eat less during lactation. Over-conditioned sows have even more stress during hot weather.” Lactation feed intake is critical as sows need greater nutriA12

ent levels. Pearson recommends adjusting lactation rations in the summer to help sows receive the nutrients needed to maintain condition.

mer, a lactating sow can consume up to 16 gallons of water per day, with 5 to 10 gallons of water consumed per sow per day on average.

To compensate for reduced intake potential, feed a palatable, concentrated source of energy to sows. A dense source of energy, fed with a summer sow feed additive, can help the sow consume the nutrients needed to support milk production and maintain body condition. 1

Supplying fresh, clean water at constant rates can help sows meet their water requirements. If using nipple waterers, Pearson recommends adjusting the water flow rate for at least 0.5 gallon of water flow per minute.

3. Increase feeding frequency. Feed breakdown generates heat; therefore, larger meals cause the sow’s body temperature to increase. Feed sows smaller meals throughout the day to decrease the heat generated by the body when breaking down the feed. Pearson recommends feeding 2 to 3 smaller meals throughout the day and to feed sows in the night or in the early morning when it’s cooler to prevent significant body temperature increases. Switching from two large meals to three small meals has been shown to increase sow feed intake 10 to15 percent. 2 Account for this additional feed when formulating summer rations. 4. Provide calories through fat vs. fiber. Include higher levels of fat, such as choice white grease or vegetable oil, at 2 to 6 percent of the diet in place of fibrous ingredients such as soybean hulls, wheat middlings, distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS) and alfalfa. Pearson says that adding fat at a rate of 50 to 100 pounds per ton of complete feed increases the energy density of the ration, helping the sow to receive necessary nutrients at a lower heat increment than protein.2 5. Evaluate trace mineral levels. “Make sure that vitamins, minerals and amino acids are balanced with the energy you are providing the sows,” Pearson says, explaining that levels may need to be increased during times of heat and humidity.

7. Keep feed fresh. Feed is more likely to spoil in warm temperatures. Increase the feeding frequency, feed slightly smaller meals and routinely clean the feeding area to keep feed fresh through the summer. ________________________________________ For more information on summer sow feeding, visit www.trueappetizer.com or contact Vern Pearson at 651-375-5582. PENNYWISE Another Tool in the Fine Art of Money Management By Paula Vogelgesang Email: Pennywise at pennywise@gwtc.net.

Money Saving (and Mak ing) Hobbies An old friend once told me “One is never too OLD or too SMART to learn something new!” Any kind of hobby you take up usually involves learning new skills over a period of time. Some can be learned quickly and others take years to acquire more than a ‘beginner status’. This has become vital now and may be even more so in years to come. In our technical world of today, most workers are experts in one or two areas to the exclusion of almost anything else and there are very few people that could now be called ‘Jack of All Trades, master of none’. While this is good in some areas including high wages, it also leaves you very dependent on that type of work and nothing else. If a company outsources or downsizes, a whole lot of folks are what you call ‘unemployed, or underemployed’ – which is not a good thing. And we have seen many jobs sent overseas or done away with entirely the past few years. A useful hobby or two can not only afford many hours of enjoyment, but could possibly enable you to acquire new skills that you might use down the road. Any new skill you may learn could also be a way to help you reduce your cost of living. Learning to ‘cook from scratch’, raising part of your food supply in a home garden or even in a flower bed, landscaping skills of all kinds, home or apartment repairs and maintenance skills, any type of automotive servicing or repair, welding, baking and decorating cakes, cookies, etc., organizing spaces, just to name a few. A hobby can also lead you to a home-based business. Some folks like to take things apart to see if they can fix what has

gone wrong. Small appliance repair is one area as is small engine repair (think lawnmowers, tillers, etc.). A good number of repair shops have started their business in the garage or back shed of the home or even the basement workshop. Many of these don’t have big advertising budgets and spread the word by posting signs on grocery store bulletin boards, spreading the word at work, church, etc. A friend with a talent for metalworking and drawing now makes mailbox and overhead signs for folks all over the country living on small to large acreages. He works after hours in his farm shop and has more business than he can handle. Another friend has a series of part-time jobs that keep the family busy six days a week. They help people with gardening (kids are good weed pullers), do a lot of lawn mowing, tree-trimming and other miscellaneous chores. They do some heavy cleaning for families on a semi-annual basis, like cleaning out the basement, garage, etc. (he has teenaged boys that can lift a lot). The girls and guys both do heavy cleaning – washing walls and ceilings as well as moving furniture for carpet cleaning/removal. They also do a lot of volunteer work – helping to clean public areas with local groups, setting up tables and chairs for community events, and other charities. Some people make a business out of recycling things that would otherwise be trashed. Rugs and saddle blankets as well as quilts are made from worn clothing and sold to make extra income for a family and utilizing resources that would otherwise be discarded and pile up in a landfill.

Construction sites can be a source for scrap wood that can be fashioned into shelves, birdhouses and all manner of small wooden items that can be sold at craft fairs, thus adding to the family’s money supply. A school teacher/woodworker found that he and his wife enjoy fixing up old houses and reselling them. It’s adding to their retirement income stash and the addition of a realtor’s license, means that he can sell what they ‘fix up’. When job is lost and there is no more work to be found, gardening skills come into play and the family is fed at little cost. Surplus food is canned, dried or frozen for later use. When I listen to those who survived the Great Depression era of the ‘30’s, a garden was the first thing they did to help the family survive. One dear lady said, “We weren’t poor, we just didn’t have any money.” From listening to her talk, her family found many ways to stretch/recycle what was available and they survived and thrived during the bad times. My own family has made many gifts over the years. Our children were taught life skills by their father they will have forever. A hobby just might be worth looking into after all. –Until next time, Paula _______________________________ If you have tips or ideas to share, send them to Pennywise, Box 518, Kadoka, SD 57543 or better yet, email Pennywise at pennywise@gwtc.net. Tasty Ground Beef Budget Meals and More Money Saving Tips, Drying Flowers, Easy Corn Silk Remover A subscriber I’ve known since she was a kid sent these tips. She’s now married and has three children. She said she could make three meals for her family of five on just one pound of ground beef. She writes: We are on a very strict budget. Dessert is only served on Sundays, so it’s a special treat. Soda, chips or any other junk food are not an option at this house. Our children also do not have cellphones, IPods, or other gadgets. We do have a used computer for schoolwork but there are NO games on it! We don’t spend money on these things so we have the money for our house payments and the taxes. Our kids go along willingly because they each have their own rooms now and they

are decorating them as funds become available. They well remember the years that all three of them were jammed into one small room with cardboard boxes for dressers and NO closet! Back to the ground beef meals… Meal One: Brown about 4 ounces of the beef with a couple of onions and add some tomatoes, and crush them with a fork (I find diced tomatoes at the salvage store for about 20 cents a can). Add some Italian seasoning and pour the mixture over two pounds of cooked spaghetti noodles and enjoy. Meal Two: Cook about five cups of macaroni; add 4 ounces of the browned ground beef and some onions and to-

matoes, and then add mustard for added flavor. This is a goulash dish. Meal Three is Chili-Mac. I sometimes find boxes of the commercial macaroni and cheese in the ‘get rid of’ bin for 20 cents each. I add more macaroni to what is in the box and then add extra milk to stretch the cheese. I put in some chili powder, and if I can find a dented can of chopped chili peppers, I add those in. The kids really think this is a treat. We have 3 teenagers plus my husband and myself and we all have physically demanding jobs. The kids all work too so they have to have enough good food to get them through a long day. We raise a big garden every year and there are always at least three kinds of vegetables on the table, sometimes more, depending on what is ready to eat. We can, freeze and dry any extra garden produce for winter. I don’t worry about my kids not getting enough vegetables. We have three apple trees, two pear trees and a peach tree so fruit isn’t a problem either; the

kids eat all of them, and a lot of it! Again, canning, freezing and drying any extra fruits for winter really stretch our ‘thin’ budget. I really have to give kudos to this family – they have a huge goal and are working towards a ‘paid for’ home and self-sufficiency. Yay for them!

DRYING FLOWERS A subscriber from the eastern part of the state writes, “Cut peonies when JUST beginning to open; hang them upside down in a dark closet for at least two weeks and then let dry completely, preferably in a dark area to prevent color fade on the blossoms. Dried flowers are expensive – some several dollars each, but when used to decorate a wreath for fall, they [dried peonies] are beautiful!” –tip submitted by CK, SD

Why Keep Your Fork and What Does Heaven Cost? I have been digging into the archives of some past emails that I saved that portray an uplifting tone or thought. They always seem to make me feel better and I hope they can put a skip into your step also.

Keep Your Fork There was a woman who had been diagnosed with a terminal illness and had been given three months to live. So as she was getting her things in order, she contacted her pastor and had him come to her house to discuss certain aspects of her final wishes. She told him which songs she wanted sung at the service, what scriptures she would like read, and what outfit she wanted to be buried in. The woman also requested to be buried with her favorite Bible. Everything was in order and the pastor was preparing to leave when the woman suddenly remembered something very important to her. There’s one more thing, “she said excitedly. “What’s that?”came the Pastor’s reply. “This is very important.”The woman continued. “I want to be buried with a fork in my right hand.” The pastor stood looking at the woman, not knowing quite what to say. “That surprises you, doesn’t it?”The woman asked. “Well, to be honest, I’m puzzled by the request,” said the pastor. The woman explained. “In all my years of attending church socials and potluck dinners, I always remember that when the dishes of the main course were being cleared, someone would inevitably lean over and say, ‘Keep your fork.’It was my favorite part because I knew that something better was coming; like velvety chocolate cake or deep-dish apple pie. Something wonderful, and with substance! So, I just want people to see me there in that casket with a fork in my hand and I want them to wonder, ‘What’s with the fork?’” Then I want you to tell them: “Keep your fork…. the best is yet to come.” The pastor’s eyes welled up with tears of joy as he hugged the woman good-bye. He knew this would be one of the last times he would see her before her death. But he also knew that the woman had a better grasp of Heaven than he did. She KNEW something better was coming. At the funeral people were walking by the woman’s casket and they saw the pretty dress she was wearing and her A14

favorite Bible and the fork placed in her right hand. Over and over, the pastor heard the question “What’s with the fork?”And over and over he smiled. During the sermon, the pastor told the people of the conversation he had with the woman shortly before she died. He also told them about the fork and about what it symbolized to her. The pastor told the people how he could not stop thinking about the fork and told them that they probably would not be able to stop thinking about it either. He was right. So the next time you reach down for your fork, let it remind you oh so gently, that the BEST is yet to come.

What Does Heaven Cost? A man dies and goes to Heaven. Of course, St. Peter meets him at the Pearly Gate. St. Peter says, “Here’s how it works. You need 100 points to make it in to Heaven. You tell me all the good things you’ve done, and I give you a certain number of points for each item, depending o how good it was. When you reach 100 points, you can get in.” “Okay,”the man says, “I was married to the same woman for 50 years and never cheated on her, not even in my heart.” “That’s wonderful,”says St. Peter, “that’s worth 3 points.” “Three points? Well, I attended church all my life and supported its ministry with my tithe and service.” “Terrific!”says St. Peter. “That’s certainly worth a point.” “One point? I started a soup kitchen in my city and worked in a shelter for homeless veterans.” “Fantastic, that’s good for 2 more points, “St. Peter says. “2 points?”, the man cried. “At this rate, the only way I get into Heaven is by the grace of God!” “Bingo, 100 points! Come on in!” Ephesians 2:8,9 By GRACE are ye saved, through faith, it is a gift of God, not of works lest any man should boast! While thinking about these joyous thoughts of Heaven enjoy the start of summer! Steve Huneke

My Attempt at a Self-Sufficient Food Garden Last year I came up with a wondrous idea of a food garden. Seems like an odd notion for a person who has been around vegetable gardens all her life, and is even in business selling fruits and vegetables to others. There was this spot in the garden that became inaccessible to the tractor tiller. An odd 'l' shape space between permanent plantings of blackberries, rhubarb and asparagus. Whatever planted would have to be selfsurviving; that meant perennial or something that readily reseeds. The plan was a food plot where herbs, vegetables that are perpetual and flowers thrived. Not just any flowers, rather those that are edible or medicinal. Since my memory can never remember which flowers are safe and which cause hallucinations the flowers in my gardens have just been for the beauty they provide. But if I had a spot for those tasty little blossoms, we could be adding nasturtiums to our salads. Doubtful, we just aren't that adventurous. Then there are the vegetables that kindly reseed themselves. One is called miner's lettuce or Claytonia. It has been coming back each spring in the high tunnels. Its green heart shaped leaves are rather pretty and tasty. Cilantro does the same. Marigolds, calendulas and borage were planted last year. Borage, if correctly identified, looks to be the new weed. It grew well last year and its blue star shaped flowers were certainly beautiful. But everyone was too chicken to see if the leaves really did taste like cucumbers. That is one of the risks involved in my gardening ventures. If it grows well, it is liable to be the next noxious weed. Can you imagine introducing a new plant only to have it be so prolific, that it shows up in all the neighbors fields?

Soon there is this persistent weed bearing your name. Poor Jenny has never been able to live down the fact that she liked a fast-growing, carpet forming creeping plant that gets pretty white flowers. We came close one year, when I decided it was high time to learn how to make mustard. Studying the catalogs and recipes, it was determined that brown mustard seed was the variety to go with. To my delight it came up bountifully producing plenty of seed. The harvested dry seed filled an ice cream bucket. Winter came and my intentions to make mustard never came to fruition. Somewhere along the line in a cupboard cleaning frenzy, most of the seed was thrown out. Saving only enough seed for a future planting. Early that spring we noticed a new weed sprouting up everywhere. Mustard gone wild, it was plain to see that it was easy to grow. We took a break from digging up dandelions in the lawn to pull out the mustard plants. Those pesky dandelions are they just another example of a pretty edible plant gone awry? The food garden is still a work in progress. These last snow/rains will hopefully germinate the broom corn, tritacle, purple cone flowers, bread poppies, parsley, fennel, claytonia, cilantro seeds. To fill space several of those free packets of seed of wildflowers were sown, thus invading my food plot with pretty inedible blossoms. If it is like last year, the many species of bees, insects and butterflies will spend the hot summer afternoons buzzing and humming around the flower blossoms, making it a food plot afterall. ———————————————————— Renae B. "Tasty Ground Beef Budget Meals and More Money Saving Tips, Drying Flowers, Easy Corn Silk Remover", continued from page A13 says, “Take a sharpened stick or a shovel – depends on the size of the ant hill – and open it up until you see the eggs and then pour out a teakettle of boiling water right down where the eggs are! It kills them instantly.” (She’s right. I’ve gotten rid of all kinds of ants along the sidewalks and even the big hills of red and black ants (the kind that bite and leave a welt) have been ‘done in’. I did have one huge hill in the garden that took a couple of treatments, as I didn’t get deep enough the first time. I really like the fact that there are no chemicals, which could harm the cats, dogs, kids and me.)

SILK REMOVAL It’s roasting ear time again and getting rid of the silks is one of the most miserable jobs I know, especially when preparing hundreds of ears of corn to be blanched and frozen. I have found that a clean ‘whisk broom’ from the hardware store works pretty well to brush away that annoying silk. Sure makes the job go faster! –submitted by GD, IA

PEPPER GROWING CABBAGE If you take a full pepper shaker with large holes in it to the garden and pepper the tops of the growing cabbages, the green cabbage worms won’t bother them as much. You do have to repeat this at least once a week for a while. It really cuts down on the ‘critters’ when trying to make slaw or sauerkraut. –submitted by WW, NE

PAINT CATCHER When painting ceilings, cut a small hole in half of a hollow child’s ball and pull it up around the brush handle. Any dripping paint will be caught by the half-ball and can be dumped back in the paint can, rather than having it run down your arm. –submitted by KS, MI

BAND A GLASS FOR A TODDLER

by Kayla Degner

I use the small four ounce jelly jars for glasses for kids two and over instead of the sippy cups they string all over the house. I put the big wide bands from broccoli around the jar so they won’t slip when toddlers use them. This way, they get their drink of water or juice and the glass gets put in the sink! –submitted by BK, OR

DEHYDRATOR SCRUBBY My boys are hunters and always make a lot of jerky from the meat they bring home, which is fine until it comes time to clean the screens and trays. They don’t fit in the sink so I end up putting them in the bathtub to soak. I then take an old toothbrush to the nooks and crannies and the brush really works to knock the crud out of the corners. A quick spray down with the hand shower and the trays are just like new again. – submitted by JS, SD

‘FREE’ FRUIT TREES Peach and nectarine pits planted in a protected area will make a tree that will yield in about 5 years. About 90% of the fruit is edible, and although it does not run true to form, it is usually very good and is called ‘common fruit’. It’s not hybrid and probably one of the original stock that was crossed with another to make hybrid fruit. –submitted by FF, CA (We had some birds ‘plant’ apple trees behind an old granary down by the barn. Two of the trees bear little apples like the lady apples sold in the stores on occasion and the other three trees bear a larger, very good pie apple. They are in a clump, but unless we get grasshoppers or hail, we always have apples. FREE FRUIT!)

The Best Gift I Ever Received: Growing Up on a Farm

I

t all started when two young, farm kids fell in love in high school. My dad, Dennis, started farming in the late 1980’s in rural Sac and Calhoun counties. Julie, my mom, went to college to become a school teacher. They were united in marriage in 1988 and

had my brother, Wesley in 1991. I arrived a couple of years later on a hot, summer day. I was daddy’s little farm girl from the start. I remember helping him feed the livestock, barely tall enough to reach the fence. I vividly recall falling asleep in the tractor with my dad during planting season lying in the back window. If we had a bottle calf or lamb, I named it and that little creature became my best friend. I can remember my bottle calves like it was yesterday, Ramona after the fictional book character, Rupert after my favorite Survivor character, Stinky from laying on an air freshener, and Oreo after the cookie. I learned many life lessons on the farm; obey your mom and dad and when dad says come outside he means it! Any farm kid will understand those lessons. Our farm is located just west of Lytton, Iowa. If you take a quick glance at our farm you’ll notice a red barn, machine shed, white house, small buildings, grain bins and cattle lots all surrounded by Iowa’s beautiful farmland. If you are lucky you might even catch a glimpse of

our dogs, Pepper, Jake and Duke. After I was able to join 4-H, a youth organization to promote agriculture, my summers were filled with preparing projects for county and state fairs. I took part in building exhibits such as baking goodies and building home improvement projects. I also showed sheep and cattle. Once I was in high school, I joined FFA another youth organization. I had a great advisor that cared for every member and he truly gave me so many opportunities to succeed. Throughout FFA I held positions as President and Secretary and attained my Iowa FFA Degree. In my opinion, youth today need to get involved in these two remarkable organizations. I graduated from high school last May with a future of agriculture in my sights. I am currently attending Iowa State University majoring in Agriculture Education and Life Sciences with the Communication Option. At ISU, I stay busy with various clubs and organizations. So far my favorite organization is the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Ambassadors. Through this I am able to support and promote for the college. I have a passion for agriculture and want to advocate for the agriculture industry. Particularly, I want to reach out to the youth because they play an important part in the future of this growing industry. When I look back at my years on the farm, many memories surround me. The countless hours of picking up rocks, planting trees, taking food to the men in the field, mowing, raising and showing cattle and sheep, and running the grain-cart come to mind. I would not trade being raised on a farm for the world. Growing up as a farm kid is the best gift I could have ever received.

Kayla Degner was born and raised in rural Lytton, IA on a diversified grain and livestock family farm. She graduated from Rockwell City-Lytton in May 2012 and currently attends Iowa State University studying Agricultural Communications. Her past involved many agriculture venues. Kayla has a strong interest in advocating to the youth involved in agriculture. Contact her at kadegner@iastate.edu.

Organizing Long-Term Paper The 80-20 rule of paperwork still taunts me. I know I will not retrieve 80 percent of what I have filed, yet when I look back through the paperwork, I am reminded of parts of my life I have forgotten. I laugh at a fictional short story I wrote back in college. I don’t understand the goals in an old performance review from a previous employer. I enjoy re-reading special cards and notes from old friends. I am not ready to get rid of it all, but it is time to enjoy the memories and to weed it down. Because of my interest in simple living, people sometimes think I am in favor of “pitching it all.” I am not. It is okay to be a “saver,” if you set up your filing system so that you can retrieve, enjoy, and use your information (or stuff) when you want it. Frankly, if a filing system isn’t functional for its owner, then the filed paper might as well have been recycled instead of saved. Here are ideas for tweaking your long-term filing system: First, gather all paper of a particular type into one location. I’m infamous for tucking away related paperwork tidbits in many different spots—a craft article in a nightstand, a related magazine in a bathroom “reading” basket, a piece more in a kitchen drawer, and a pile in a labeled folder in my file cabinet. I can’t weed it down or organize it until I’ve gathered it all together. Second, if there is paperwork you know you don’t really need but you have trouble parting with it, think about why this is the case. If the information means something to you, maybe you could save a few representative samples and journal about the rest. If not, try to get “sentimental” and “historical” information out of the regular household files by creating separate folders for them: you could label them “Special cards,” “High School Memories,” or “Previous Jobs.” The goal is to preserve the memories without clogging the filing system. On a rather morbid note, I think about my children having to go through all of this stuff some day. Third, review your file labels. Your life changes over time, so your filing categories need to be updated too. The only filing constant is that categories will change, so I label files in pencil! Sometimes a folder gets too thick despite my efforts to weed it out, so I create two folders with the same label followed by a numeric designation. In other cases, it is time to create two slightly different file categories and sort my paperwork a little more specifically. My bulging “Travel” folder turned into “Minnesota Travel” and “Outstate Travel” Sometimes I also use several “mini” categories or smaller folders (8 1/2”x11”) within a legalsize (11”x14”) folder. My large folder might be “Insurance” and within it could be sub-folders for the house, auto, and life insurance.

ABF PACKING, INC. “The Udder Packers”

it on a desktop. Any pile can become a file. Finally, I would like to share my two cents on crossreferencing and indexing. For years, I thought either topic was over-kill in a discussion about household paperwork. That was my opinion before I conducted a frantic search for a piece of paper that turned out to be in a safety deposit box and before I had three different folders in my cabinet that all contained the same kind of information under different headings. Cross-referencing can be as simple as putting a piece of paper in the “Insurance” file that says a certain document is in the “Vehicle” file. Indexing can be as simple as a list at the front of your filing system that shows all the folder labels (If I had indexed sooner, I wouldn’t have had these three folders: “Christmas Crafts,” “Holiday Ideas,” and “Seasonal Activities.”). Try a paper management book to get ideas and to help keep you motivated for this tedious task. I am a fan of: Taming the Paper Tiger by Barbara Hemphill (Random House, 1992), and The Office Clutter Cure by Don Aslett (Marsh Creek Press, 2008), and File Don’t Pile by Pat Dorff (St. Martin’s Griffin, 1986). I don’t want to be overly zealous about household paperwork. Summer is short. I just want to save time for things that are more fun than hours spent frantically hunting for a piece of paper.

Fourth, create wiggle room and “spare” folders: Household filing isn’t an exact science. I like to have enough extra space in each file drawer to allow easy filing and wiggle room. I also like to keep a few extra folders and file labels on hand to accommodate life changes like new hobbies or interests. This may sound like common sense, but for me, it encourages better filing behavior and it prevents me from just shoving new information into a drawer or piling A16

Get yer hot dogs! The (sort of) true origin of a treat Americans love hot dogs. Every year we eat about 7 billion of them between Memorial Day and Labor Day alone. And the typical American eats about 60 a year. Where do hot dogs come from (aside from ballpark vendors, of course)? Their origins are shrouded in mystery. Some sources say they date back to the 1st century, when the Roman Emperor Nero’s cook first experimented with stuffing the intestines of pigs with spiced meats. The word “frankfurter” comes from Frankfurt, Germany, where pork sausages in buns are said to have been served in the 15th century; “wiener” is from Vienna (Wien), home to pork sausages originally called “wienerwurst” (Vienna sausage)in the 1800s. In the United States, a German immigrant named Charles Feltman is credited with selling sausages in rolls around the year 1870, in Coney Island, N.Y. Another German native, Antonoine Feuchtwanger, is said to have sold sausages in St. Louis at around the same time, offering a split bun to hold them, at the suggestion of his wife. And the term “hot dog” itself? That’s similarly shrouded in mystery. According to one of the more popular tales, a newspaper cartoonist in 1900 drew a picture of a frankfurter with legs, a tail, and a head, but unable to spell “Dachshund,” dubbed it a “hot dog.” The story is disputed, however. What’s beyond doubt is that hot dogs are the meal of choice for lots of hungry people around the world—whatever condiments they want to load them up with.

“PROFITS GROW WITH KNIGHTRO” –Ken E. Knight Knightro Sessions | Mending Fences and Tending Senses

COUNTY FAIR LIVESTOCK JUDGES — THE LITMUS TEST The Color Purple Fades When Exposed to the “Cooler” The coveted brass ring of the County Fair is the color purple! A purple ribbon majestically adorned with a rosette is held in perpetuity by those who show it off with a sense of pride. But is it always meritoriously awarded, or is it often flawed by politics and other factors of distraction? Yes, it’s county fair time — a time to reflect and re-evaluates our priorities and objectives! The savory tastes, sights, and sounds of the County Fair are in the air. Colors of red, white, and blue will adorn the stalls of animals that are housed and cared for as though they were king/queen for a day. It’s a special time for the livestock as well as those who would, at any other time and place, call it chores! The fair is a wonderful place to educate and showcase the pride of our efforts. But all too often the message is missed! For some reason the thrill of the ferris wheel, the mystique of the sleight of hand, the allure of a pronto-pup and the misunderstood premiums, generated by the chant of the auctioneer is accepted as a gratuity,

never to be challenged—for fear of looking a gift horse in the mouth. The walk to the show ring and the parade of champions is for the intended purpose of showcasing what it takes to produce red meat. However, we fail if we do not challenge the outcome on the rail. The very core of Knightro is that of recognizing value differences in livestock and establishing a market-pricing plan that recognizes these differences in the form of value-based compensation. And, it has to start at the 4-H youth level at your local county fair. I especially enjoy working with the 4-H youth, as this impacted my life in such a powerful way back when I was a youngster growing up on a farm in western North Dakota. My involvement in 4-H truly became my focus in life; so much so, that I can really feel the emotions of these kids and relate to most every situation they face. This is always driven home and reinforced when I speak to 4-H and FFA livestock groups. They not only remind me of how far we have missed the mark in terms of defining the ob-

jective of raising livestock, but that there is a real need for judges that can teach and relate to youngsters in a very meaningful manner. A child should not leave the show-ring with only the options of either joy or disappointment. They need to leave with a sense of accomplishment and pride; a learning experience, and enjoy the highs of a new found level of self-worth and confidence. Livestock judging is due for a big overhaul! The current method of judging does not meet the criteria of teaching and learning for which it was intended. This is so appar-

Continued >>

The Heart of a Livestock Judge Judging livestock has been in my genes from the time of winning a regional 4-H judging contest at the age of 10 to being on the NDSU Livestock Judging Team. I’ve been involved in judging ever since, and have gained a great deal of self-satisfaction from helping to guide youngsters to the winners circle.

YOUR VOICE IN THE MARKETING PLACE OF YOUR CHOICE — KNIGHTRO SESSIONS MENDING FENCES AND TENDING SENSES

To have to walk into a pen full of calves and pick out the steer that has the most potential, can be a daunting experience— even more so when it involves a little horse-trading. I traded a baby colt for my first baby calf. Emotions can run high when you have to give up your favorite pet for a bawling calf that doesn’t want to leave her momma.

Ken E. Knight is the author of the “Knightro Report”, a nationally syndicated livestock-marketing column, which is featured in this publication on a regular basis. Mr. Knight is a graduate of North Dakota State University, with a major BS Degree in Meat and Animal Science and a minor in Communications. In addition to being a professional auctioneer, public speaker and livestock judge, he brings many years of corporate level meat and livestock market management and expertise to the industry for which he now serves as an independent voice of shared knowledge and experience.

But, as important as selection is to the judging process, feeding, grooming, and showing becomes equally as challenging to the fulfillment of the entire project.

County fairs have served as a showcase for agriculture for many years. But, more importantly, they have been a window of opportunity for a real educational experience. The 4-H kids especially could gain a great deal of knowledge and experience, unlike that from other events that take place in their formative years.

Pony Tales by PONTY:

Much of my interest in judging was fueled by my father, who always insisted that I select my own calves, and be responsible for the outcome in the show ring. This produced nine grand-champion steers during my formative 4-H years, and instilled a spirit of competition that has been the basis of my involvement ever since.

For more in-depth information regarding the topics that have been touched upon in this report, Knightro conducts livestock marketing seminars on a regular basis. To schedule a seminar, auction, judging, or speaking engagement, please contact Ken Knight, Knightro, 136 Hillridge Ct., Prescott, WI  54021, phone 715-262-8480, fax 715-262-8480, e-mail knightro1@comcast.net; or contact the Farm & Livestock Directory, P.O. ent when you get out in the real world and witness the lack of education among livestock producers.

that of learning to give reasons. Learning how to express one-self in a meaningful manner has served me well in my profession as well as my personal life. Every child should be taught the art of public speaking, clarification, and expression of thought. Traveling with the livestock judging teams to national livestock judging shows was of greater value to me than all other academics combined. Competing at the collegiate level in national competition was an adrenaline high that can’t be compared to that of any other kind of participation. Not only were the awards of significant importance, but also the fraternization among my peers has resulted in lifetime relationships that have paid dividends far beyond that of the show-ring. Livestock judging is as much about people skills and communication as it is about livestock. A lesson learned that far exceeds the livestock arena. I’m grateful the opportunities I’ve had to share in such a rewarding life experience! The heart of a judge becomes more visible than that which is exposed under the hide of a steer.

Perhaps the most gratifying part of my livestock judging experiences has been

So, what’s wrong with the way it is? Livestock judging is an art and a skill of subjectivity — so subjective that there isn’t even total agreement among the so-called experts. This is not to say that we don’t have competent judges, because there are many very good ones available, but it does suggest that the present system of judging is antiquated and needs to be fixed.

For some this project may have started with the selection of the dam and sire — making it a once in a youthful lifetime decision, or at least a year long vested venture. Doesn’t this kind of a commitment cry out for more than just a tenminute walk through a show ring, and listening to a canned set of reasons the judge has given for a jillion classes in the past? Doesn’t your child deserve more?

To have a young boy or girl enter the show ring with high expectations, and return with only one of jubilation or one of total rejection is totally destructive to the whole learning experience. For the many kids that participate, most will leave with a feeling of nothingness. For those adults that support the system, they will say it is a good experience of life to be exposed to the real world of winning and losing. To those, my response is one of total empathy for their kids.

There is nothing more special on the face of this earth than our children, and isn’t it our responsibility to guide and educate them in their decision-making? Their road map to the future may have nothing to do with livestock, but aren’t we obligated to build them a strong foundation from which they can make sound choices?

Competition in the livestock judging ring can’t be compared with that of a sporting event or a style show. It’s not about speed or endurance; not even about ability or beauty. It’s about the bottom line of agriculture to go forth from this educational experience with the skills and the tools to make a living producing livestock on a profitable basis.

Wake up with a little lemon Start your morning off right with a glass of water— and some fresh lemon juice squeezed into it. Lemon juice is an antioxidant, and also a good source of calcium, potassium, and vitamin C. In addition, it may give your immune system a boost and help with digestion throughout the day. If you do squeeze a fresh lemon (as opposed to getting juice from a bottle), be sure to wash it thoroughly ahead of time to clean off any dirt or bacteria that may drift into the juice.

What has to be done to fix it? First we acknowledge that there are differences —differences brought about by feeding and selection. An explanation of good, sound feeding practices and a demonstration of selection factors would be good for starters. You then begin to group the entries in accordance to the explanation and demonstration that you have just given. In reality, you have just conducted a mini evaluation clinic, so that the kids know and understand what is happening. Your job as a judge is to educate these youngsters, not simply stand out there in the middle of the ring as though you were a God that could see right through these animals. You have a pretty good idea what is under the hide or else you wouldn’t be judging. But, it’s not a science, and there’s no real proof until the carcass is hanging on the rail and cutability and quality are evaluated. No livestock market class should be complete or finalized until the data of a cutability test is available to the judge. Even then there will be some close calls that will require you to regress back to the show-ring before making final judgment. The final placing should be presented at a follow-up meeting in an educational format that allows for plenty of discussion. To prepare for such a session there should be photos taken of the live animals, showing front, side, and rear views. These photos should be presented in conjunction with the carcass-data, with a full set of understandable, objective reasons. This is where objectivity comes into the show-ring. Because of the many sideline differing opinions, it’s where we bring full closure to the judgmental decision making, for both the parents and their kids. Isn’t this the least we should expect from a 4-H project that required so much time, energy, and investment?

every year. The cleaner consists of a 29—inch long metal tube that slips through the center of a round cover that’s placed on the top of a filter. A standard 3/8—inch air chuck connects to the top end of the tube and blows compressed air out the bottom through a rotary nozzel with three arms. As the tube is pushed up and down inside the filter, the air nozzels rotate and blow dust out of the filter membrane. The round cover lid is designed to fit any diameter filter. The lid design prevents dust from re-entering the filter because the cover seals tightly to the top of the filter being cleaned. The cover also keeps the center pipe from any lateral movement, protecting your filter. The rotating end consists of three nozzle arms that create a centrifugal action that blows air uniformly through the filter membrane. The uniform air distribution cleans the filter without damaging the filter membrane. The air pressure should not exceed 130 psi so the output at the arm nozzles will be 30 to 40 psi. The patent pending Diesel Air Filter Cleaner is designed with replaceable arms. Nozzle extensions give you different roating diameters to clean multiple sizes of filters. Diesel Air Filter Cleaner will help you safely clean your filter and prolong the life of your air filter. A clean filter will increase filter life and reduce engine maintenance while saving up to 5 gallons of fuel per hour.

“The coolant performs like the day I had it installed, and I haven’t lost a drop!” says Joe, “and I drive all 48 states and in plenty of hot weather conditions.” The waterless coolant has a boiling point of 375°F and at operating temperatures has a very low vapor pressure. The low pressure has reduced the stress on cooling system components and the hoses for Joe’s engine are the original ones. The metals in his engine have not suffered the effects of corrosion, electrolysis, or cavitation erosion. “It performs as advertised,” adds Joe, “and I never think about hot climates or altitude, except when I’m passing someone going up a steep grade. That’s when I’m reminded that operating with Evans has a performance advantage.” The engine is from the pre-EGR cooler era and the fan clutch is actuated by a “fan-stat”. The actuation temperature is elevated to reduce fan-on time for fuel economy. Mr. Umstead has been averaging about 7.5 mpg over the past twenty three years. At the Mid America Truck Show, held at Louisville, KY in late March, Joe spent time at the Evans booth sharing his experience with hundreds of owner operators. When one curious attendee asked Joe about the cost of coolant, Joe simply replied, “I have no idea how much coolant costs these days – I haven’t had to buy any for twenty three years!”

its waterless engine coolant. Joe Umstead, an independent owner operator, has put a million miles on the 1990 Freightliner that he bought new. At the time of purchase, he converted its Detroit Diesel Series 60 engine to using an experimental waterless coolant provided by Evans. Twenty three years and a million miles later, Joe has never changed or topped off his coolant, or used any supplemental coolant additives.

Evans Cooling Systems announces an endurance milestone with waterless coolant Evans Cooling Systems announced an important milestone that demonstrates the durability and long life performance of

Heavy duty truck engines have changed a lot since 1990 and so have Evans waterless coolants. Today’s offerings provide better heat transfer and lower viscosity than the experimental coolants of 1990, but the basic feature of a huge separation between operating temperature and boiling point remains. It is that separation that keeps vapor out of the cooling system, vapor that makes an insulating barrier between hot metal and liquid coolant, the barrier that makes hot spots and that brings premature death to EGR coolers.

DR® Power Equipment takes an innovative approach to tree cutting with the DR® TreeChopper Invasive tree species have long been a problem for property owners with large areas of pasture land. Over just a short period of time, clear areas can become overgrown with buckthorn, sagebrush, yucca, and locust trees, and cutting them down with a chainsaw is time-consuming, difficult, and often dangerous. DR ® Power Equipment recognized this pervasive problem and responded with the DR® TreeChopper, an ATV attachment that allows for easy removal of invasive trees up to 4 inches in diameter – up to 25 times faster than a chainsaw! The unit attaches to an ATV and functions like a pipe cutter for trees. Users simply line up a tree with the U-shaped ground-level cutting area and drive into the tree. The result is clear, open pasture land without trees or pesky stumps. Many ranchers, farmers, and large property owners consider the DR ® TreeChopper an essential tool for keeping their land under control. As one owner puts it, “Purchasing the TreeChopper was a fast and inexpensive way to take care of the problem [of invasive trees] on my own. In two days, I was able to clear 160 acres.” To see the DR® TreeChopper in action, visit www.DRTreeChopper.com. Irrigation engines can be more affordable with a fuel mixer Realize saving of up to $3.00 per hour, per engine using a Dual Fuel Mixer Just ten years ago, diesel fuel was the fuel of choice for irrigation engines. At that time, is was much cheaper than natural gas. Producers started purchasing diesel engines and abandoning natural gas. Today, things are different. Diesel fuel has tripled in price since 2000. Producers had to do something to make operating irrigation engines more affordable. They started mixing natural gas with diesel, and discovered they saved $80-100 on average per day, per engine.

using the mixer have reported their fuel cost savings has been very substantial. Hardy said producers have told him they have savings of over $3.00 per hour by using the mixer over straight diesel, and have had gains of 100-150 rpm from their engines. Another benefit they have reported is oil change intervals could be longer with the fuel mix versus the straight diesel. The Hardy Duel Fuel Mixer comes in a kit, and the cost is $1,595. Eliminate the dangerous and dirty manual clean out of headers Goodwin Industries has a corn header sweep for you Pictured is a header sweep built and manufactured by Goodwin Industries Inc. of Burns, KS. The header sweep is designed to sweep in down corn, broken stalks, and dry leaf buildup. This in turn eliminates dangerous and dirty manual clean out of the header. This is done with drag arms connected to a crank shaft, which continuously pulls the stalks into the auger.

Don Hardy, owner of Don Hardy Fuel Efficient Engine Services in Floydada, Texas, developed a dual fuel mixer for diesel engines to combine natural gas and diesel. The fuel mixing process could then be done economically, by all producers. In the spring of 2007, Hardy and Leon New, an engineer with the Texas Cooperative Extension Service in Amarillo, tested this mixer on three engines in Floyd County. Two engines were Case IH engines–one waas a turbo-charged, and the other engine, a 4-cylinder non-turbo. The third engine was a John Deere 4T100. During the testing, straight diesel was used, followed by a diesel and natural gas mix. The dual fuel outperformed the diesel on all three engines. The Case 4-cylinder had a savings of $1.06 per hour; the John Deere saved $2.40 per hour, and the Case turbo saved a whopping $3.55 per hour. From a fuel savings standpoint, mixing propane and diesel might have been yet an even cheaper mix–but propane proved to be more cost prohibitive, and made the engines run hotter. Hardy says the mixture of natural gas and diesel is “the way to go”, and his mixer is designed to reduce the high costs of running irrigation engines. In the past few years, several producers

New innovative Schweiss Moving Gate gives versatility Schweiss one piece hydraulic and patented lift strap bifold doors have been on the market for years. Schweiss now has a newcomer on the scene — the Schweiss Moving Gate. The Schweiss Moving Gate still utilizes the patented liftstraps, but instead of folding like a bifold door or outward like a hydraulic door, it lifts straight upward. The gate is a perfect solution for a room divider and cladding materials can come in multiple applications or combined with metal, glass or other materials to your liking. A perfect example of this was a first-ofits-kind Schweiss gate built by Schweiss Doors for “The Paw,” an upscale dog and cat resort. The owner of the 27,000 sq. ft. luxury pet resort needed a room divider gate, wall if you wish, to separate a 96 ft. room in half for dog training and handling purposes. Who you gonna call? Schweiss Doors. What made this Schweiss 46 ft wide, 1,500 lb. multiple-function designer gate different was how Schweiss Doors built it to his personal gate design. Yenish wanted a quiet and smooth operating Schweiss gate that stood about head high with the top half of seethrough polycarbonate panels and below that utilized steel paneling.

Schweiss Doors designed it to lift straight up to the high ceiling, up and out of the way when not in use. Five popular patented Schweiss Bifold liftstraps and a 2 h.p. topmounted Schweiss quality electric motor easily and quietly lift the Schweiss Moving Gate. The owner was absolutely needing a safe gate that would not cause harm to humans or animals in the public facility. He also noted that it was reasonably priced and comparative in price to a pocket door, but much easier to use. He enjoyed working with the professional Schweiss design team to get this Schweiss designer gate done. The Schweiss gate now virtually gives animal resort two rooms to work in, or when in the up position, a larger size room. “ If You Can Think It — Schweiss Doors Can Build It!” Learn more about Schweiss Doors at: www.schweissdoors.com or call (800) 746-8273.

New scale option for John Deere DN345 fertilizer and lime spreaders New for 2012, Scale-Tec introduces the John Deere DN345 Fertilizer Spreader scale kit, that includes six load cells, wiring, mounting brackets and a waterproof, backlit readout. The installation time is 8 hours, with no modification or welding required.

Benefits of this scale option are: • Determine pounds of fertilizer used per acre

With this design, the drag arms pull back, pickup, and move forward, set down and pull back again. This unit can be left on and in use at all times. It is not big and bulky and will not hinder good standing corn. You just put it on and let it run. The header sweep is powered by a hydraulic motor connected to the reel drive which allows for variable speed adjustment. Each drag arm is connected to a spring bar, which allows for tension release when necessary. Also, by using a “V” belt drive slippage is possible when needed. The design allows for easy installation on most headers.

• Determine pounds of fertilizer used per farm • Know inventory of fertilizer at all times with 99.5% accuracy • 99,000 lb. capacity scale system • Durable enough to withstand rapid application and rough ground The Paw, an exclusive dog and cat resort in Minnesota had Schweiss Doors install a 46 ft. liftstrap moving gate. The gate lifts to the ceiling when open and divides a 96 ft. room in half when down.

This particular Schweiss gate allows humans and animals to see across to the other side of the room without having to raise the Schweiss gate. A push button

Unique heart formula saves countless lives Over 20 years ago Jim Strauss suffered a major heart attack and was told he would need bypass surgery or he would die. Jim was born into a family of herbalists stretching back to the 17th century. He learned these crafts during childhood, gathering medicinal herbs in the Austrian countryside with his grandmother. He was taught that tasting herbs could detect their medicinal value, but balance and proportion were the keys to producing formulas that were effective and immediate. Jim’s heart attack was not a fluke. He admits to having lived in the fast lane, ignoring the healthier lifestyle of his parents. He considers himself fortunate as nearly half of first time heart attacks end in death. Relying on knowledge acquired over the years, he refused the recommended surgery and instead put together an herbal formula which he immediately applied to himself with outstanding results. In 3 months, his 2” arterial blockage was cleared. Since that time, Jim has shared his formula with thousands around the world who are living testimonials to its curative powers. One of many clients recently wrote: “I would like to tell you that after three months of using Strauss Heart Drops, I am a new man. I am 86 years old, no more the tired feeling I had, my swollen feet are normal again, and my bowel is working normally. Two specialists had told me ‘we can’t help you’.” — Sincerely, Peter A. Wiebe. Farm equipment built by farmers for farmers JBM Manufacturing hits the ag market with built-to-last equipment JBM Manufacturing is an Ontario based manufacturer of heavy-duty farm equipment, including a complete line of bale feeders, bale wagons and dump trailers – each one built with a passion for farmer-friendly products for over 20 years.

Being a farmer turned manufacturer himself, owner Joe Martin realizes by firsthand experience the attention to detail that is essential for “farmer friendly” products.

one diffuser 14 to 16 feet. The competition: Diaphragms will pump deeper but with very little volume of air. The deeper you pump, the less volume.

“I used to be a farmer myself – now we’re manufacturing good, quality products for farmers,” says Martin. It seems their hard work has paid off. John BM Manufacturing now has a dealer presence across North America.

5. American Eagle: Bellow warranty, five years. The competition: Diaphragm warranty–ZERO!

JBM’s complete line-up of products includes feeder wagons, skid feeders, bunk feeders, bale wagons and thrower racks. The popular Grain & Forage Boss Dumpers, Dirt Boss Dumpers, and Mighty Dumpers make the ultimate dump trailer lineup for handling everything from grain to dirt and rocks. Additionally, many items can be customized to customer specifications, and JBM offers farmers a range of options and tire choices to suit their specific application. Business has not been without its share of difficult times. A shop fire gutted the manufacturing facility late in 2012, shutting down production until the facility was re-built. However, the expanded manufacturing space in the new facility means more efficient production of equipment.

6. American Eagle: 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1-year warranty with an emailed picture of the defective part–and it ships out FREE the same day. The competition: Diaphragm warranty policy states the part may need to be shipped from as far away as Canada to be evaluated–then determined if it is the customers fault. Any new part will be shipped at the customer’s expense for parts, plus shipping both ways. (This can take months. We know a Diaphragm customer still waiting over a year.) 7. American Eagle: Pump action is a huge 1 and 3/4” stroke some call intermittent. Most pumps are. The Eagles huge volume of air creates the most effective method of water circulation. More air, more circulation. The competition: Only 1/2” stroke, also intermittent. Less volume of air results in much less water circulation.

Back in business, JBM is continuing what it does best – producing products that farmers across North American can both afford and trust. For more information, contact John BM Manufacturing at 519-699-4324, fax 519699-6105, email joe@johnbmmfg.com, or visit www.johnbmmfg.com.

Sort and gather your herd with unsurpassed ease and efficiency You will be amazed by the size and ease of this cattle sorting system. Diamond W Corrals introduces a portable sorting and gathering system by the original designer of the Wilson Wheel Corral. Eliminates gathering, loading, unloading, sorting and then reloading. Thanks to Burlington Welding, LLC, home of the Diamond W Corral, the days of stressing your herd to get them out of the pasture are gone. One system, one move, and you’re done and home in time for lunch. This is a goose-neck unit that opens for access in or out of the front. There is a total of 16 gates throughout the system. On each end of the alley there are two sets of 6’ gates that open between the split gooseneck hitch and the rear axle assembly. The rancher has two sorting pens measuring 15’ 6” X 15’ 6” with a height of all panels at 6’. This gives the rancher the ability to tie into the sorting system with any type of portable corral or stock trailer in the field. A hydraulic system sets the unit down on the ground, and when ready to move, lifts it up for transport. The hydraulic system is operated by a 12-volt battery charged with a solar panel and the ease of pushing a button. All systems are assembled with spring-loaded latches on the interior gates for added convenience. A 10’ gate allows you to drive thru the alleyway with a cake truck.
