Russell Sonnenberg

ussell Sonnenberg is the artist behind The Yesteryear Collection, a series of 24 tractor prints. His works have been very popular with tractor enthusiasts. What fascinates these collectors about Russell Sonnenberg art is his brilliant ability to capture the essence of nostalgia and bring it back to the viewers’ memory in vivid detail. “Oh I remember,” is a common phrase that people often use when admiring one of his pictures.

Russell grew up in Kossuth County in Iowa about 26 miles northeast of Algona. He had been quoted as saying, “I grew up in the horse and buggy days.” He began painting as a child mainly due his Mother’s encouragement. Of course, his life on the farm heavily influenced his work a lot. In his younger days, he worked as a tractor mechanic at an Allis Chalmer dealership. His fascination with Allis Chalmers is evident in the number of paintings he has done of that specific brand. Over the past 42 years, he had painted various nostalgic country and farm scenes. At the suggestion of his lifelong wife Audrey, “paint what you know” he returned to painting tractors.

Russell paints for the sheer enjoyment of the craft usually during the long winter months in the basement of his home in Forest City, Iowa. He does not paint in the summer as he is usually too busy with other activities. Each of his paintings has a unique story to tell. He will be releasing four new prints this summer. The stars of his paintings are, of course, the tractors.

Russell never entered art competitions or painted for fame, as so many other modern day artists. He just wanted to paint something that would touch the hearts of tractor collectors and people who have those nostalgic fond memories of the farm life. People love to reflect back on the simpler times of the forties and fifties. With this in mind, and a great deal of research, Russell goes to work on each painting treating it as his newest masterpiece.

Russell has painted many different models trying to make sure that nobody gets left out. Many artists will focus on John Deere and International. Russell paints models of Allis Chalmers, Minneapolis Moline, Ford, Oliver, Massey-Harris, and Case to round out the strong blend of collectible tractors.

Russell enjoys feeling close to nature and purposely puts a bur oak in the left side of his paintings. He has always felt that tree had its own character and enjoys using it as a trademark that makes his work distinguishable from all other artists.

A great deal of research goes into each painting to make sure that it is historically accurate. In order to pay very close attention to the mechanical detail of the various tractor models, he uses his camera to take photographs. Russell said, “I take a picture of this part and then that part, plus I make sure that I take the pictures at the angle I want so I can use them for reference. Also, I like to take photos at 2:00 in the afternoon because then the shadows aren’t weird and the sun isn’t as harsh as it is at noon. I also like to have owner’s manuals (as a reference).” Each painting requires about 150 hours of painting time, plus

Simple, Efficient Soil Sampling Tools

Little Beaver Inc., manufacturer of torquefree, one-man earth drills, provides convenient, fast and economical soil sampling tools and equipment that give owners control over when and where they sample. The combination of the company’s Big Beaver Auger Drill Rig with the optional SSK-1 kit is ideal for standard penetration testing (SPT) as it easily lifts the 140-pound hammer to drive the sampler into the soil. Little Beaver also offers hand-sampling tools that can be used with its mechanical and hydraulicpowered earth drills for quick and easy environmental soil sampling. The SSK-1 kit includes an additional hydraulic valve, Cathead and tower kit with stabilizer legs that extend out in front of the drill for additional stability. It can be used with Little Beaver’s AWJ drilling rod and 24-inch split spoon sampler, which allows a user to obtain a core soil sample for geotechnical or environmental testing. The Big Beaver is portable and is designed for limited access with a width of only 26 inches and a height of 80 inches. Because it is compact, one person can easily maneuver the twowheeled unit through gates, doorways and even basements. The drill’s hydraulic power source is available with a 20-horsepower gasoline engine and can be used with other hydraulic tools like concrete saws, breakers, tampers and chain saws. Like all Little Beaver earth drills, the Big Beaver features the company’s patented torque tube that enhances safety by allowing the operator to remain a safe distance from the power source and absorbing dangerous kickback when hitting tough soils or obstructions.

In addition to the Big Beaver and SSK-1 kit, Little Beaver also offers standard hand-sam-

pling tools for environmental soil sampling. The samplers are available in 1.5-inch and 2-inch diameters, and can be used with any of the company’s mechanical or hydraulic earth drills. The hydraulic earth drills are available with 11- or 20-horsepower gasoline engines or other diesel engine options, which makes them ideal for drilling in rocky or heavy clay soils. They also feature a three-wheeled chassis for enhanced stability and maneuverability. Little Beaver’s mechanical earth drills are available in 5.5 or 8 horsepower and offer fast operating speeds of up to 360 rpm for increased productivity and cleaner holes. The drills’ four-wheeled chassis increase stability when transporting over rough terrain. For sandy or loose soils, Little Beaver also offers hollow-stem augers that allow the driller to collect samples without the risk of contamination from the surrounding unstable soil. Available in 6- and 8-inch diameters, the augers feature a 2¾-inch or 3¾-inch internal diameter, and work great for monitoring wells. The center rod and center plug can be removed to create a clear path for inserting the soil sampler while keeping adjacent soil from falling into the testing area to give operators an undisturbed sample. Once the hole is drilled, the Big Beaver also features a swing-away drive head that makes adding extensions and using a soil sampler quick and simple. For drilling to shallow depths of 15-30 feet, Little Beaver offers a tripod kit for use with its 11-horsepower, PS11 Hydraulic Earth Drill. The Versatile DeltaTrack was designed to offer an integrated track solution. In conjunction with Camoplast, an industry-leading track manufacturer, Versatile engineers designed the DeltaTrack to be a dedicated track machine instead of simply adding track assemblies to an existing platform. Two track width options will be available, 30” and 36”. The integrated track undercarriage mounting system includes a reinforced connection to the tractor frame so that the frame absorbs load, reducing stress on the undercarriage and track components. The large onepiece cast drive sprocket features industry-leading drive bar engagement for better torque transfer and long life. 8.5” drive lugs are the largest in the industry and eliminate the chance of track slippage. “We’ve gone to an externally fluted seed meter and, at the same time, literally doubled the number of flutes on each metering wheel,” explains Alan Gengler, Landoll product engineer for tillage and seeding equipment. “The seed meter opening is also wider, which allows the producer to control seed population through both opening size and speed. The other benefit is that this new meter gives producers a wider range of seed sizes and the ability to accurately seed higher plant populations. This free tool provides heat stress prevention tips and resources to producers, helping them to avoid seasonal production lulls. “Sows can become heat stressed at temperatures lower than producers may think,” says Vern Pearson, PhD, swine nutritionist for Purina Animal Nutrition. “Producers need to look at both the temperature and the humidity inside the facility to determine the potential for heat stress.” The Heat Stress Manager for Sows app features an easy to use heat stress calculator for inputting the current temperature and humidity readings. It is recommended that producers install a thermometer and hygrometer in the sow barn to read these temperatures at the location of the sows. After inputting these readings into the app, the temperature and humidity are translated into a THI reading that shows the severity of heat stress, ranging from mild to extreme risk. Dear Michael: We have been working with our farm son for about ten years now. He is married with no children and his wife doesn't spend a lot of time on the farm. I think she should show more interest – like I had to, but she has a good job.

When someone doesn't step in to fill the labor necessary to run the operation – even with little chores like opening gates, running for parts, etc., etc., etc. like all farm women do – it puts those chores back on Mom and Dad's shoulders and can cause a lot of discontent with their in-laws. Everyone has a finite amount of labor built into their body and it drops dramatically from fifty to fifty-five, etc. It's the way of life.

My son now wants us to turn more and more of the farm interest over to him because he's been there for ten years and he feels like the technology he brought to the farm has made the farm more productive. However, we're not sure if we should be handing so much over to them when our daughter-in-law shows so little interest in the farm and we're not sure how much we'll need to live on in years to come. Is there a right amount of how much you can help your children without feeling guilty about not giving them more? – When To Stop Giving Dear When To Stop: These are the kind of questions I miss my old pal, Dr. Val Farmer, who was a psychologist, was here to assist with the answers to. I can tell you my views about the evolution of the family farm and how it's been affected over the past few decades and how different things about the 'generation gap' are changing. First of all, I find many young farmers are marrying later in life – twenty-seven to thirty-four are now the average ages for getting married. In the past generation, the average was between twenty-one and twenty-five, and the generation before was five to seven years younger. The problem this causes in estate planning is this. Likely when you got married, you considered yourself a farm wife first and, even if you worked off the farm, an intricate part of

the farm operation. By the time children today are getting married today, they've finished advanced college educations (which was rare for our generation) and many have already started on different career paths prior to marrying into a family farm. Due to this, their focus is oftentimes not on the family farm, but on their own career outside the farm. This can often cause a lot of issues for the family farm operation because about the time Dad and Mom thought they could take it a little easier – thinking their ability to contribute labor was beginning to lag – they are not being replaced by two people – just the one – their farming child. Farming is made up of two elements – money and labor. You can have all the money in the world you want to buy machin-

The other issue with your child and in-law is they don't have children yet. In estate planning, this creates an issue. If you give property to your son on the farm, under state law it becomes half your daughter-in-law's. If you feel she hasn't 'earned it', you're going to feel real worried about handing this over to them. This can then sow seeds of discontent with your son because he thinks he has earned it and this is probably where he's coming from. The other issue with married couples today is you don't get a real sense of the 'us' issue. I see a lot of young married couples today who say they are married, but they don't see it as an 'us' issue to farm. When they come in, I've seen where one partner will say 'If you want to farm and go into debt, go ahead, but it's not my problem'. I get the feeling these are two people who are married and both have separate careers independent of one another, but there's no 'us' in the family on the farm anymore. The last issue is harder still to define and I think it has to do with our economic good times. I know there are farming kids out there who have farmed their entire adult lives who have never seen a bad time. Why? Because they didn't farm in the 80's when borrowing rates were 18%-20%, or in the 90's when wheat dropped to $2.80 a bushel with deducts for anything and everything, or when they sold off the dairy cows to Mexico or when they were killing calves because you couldn't afford to feed them for what they were selling for. Most of us who've been around thirty years or so remember these times and remember them well. This generation has not been forged from iron into steel yet because they haven't been put through any fires hot enough yet. The tragedy normally occurring here is the old saying 'One generation builds it, one generation enjoys it, and the next generation loses it'. That's an old, old, old saying – and it's been around a long time because it's true. I have a tough time today telling if the old farmers today are the ones who built it or are the ones enjoying it. And I don't know if the next generation is the one who is enjoying it or are the ones to lose it. Many of them – to me, at least - just don't seem to feel it's their responsibility to do the things necessary today to make certain of the farm business in the future. They want to get the farm business – they just don't want to do everything it takes to make certain of it. It's an odd side effect of long-term economic prosperity – you don't know what you had or how good you had it 'til it's gone. ________________________________________ Do you have questions about estate planning? From Bucket Calf to Grand Champion

A

fter showing bucket calves for two or three years I decided I wanted to show a market calf. I bought a red heifer and her name was Kibbles. Little did my family or I know we were in for a rude awakening.

I bought Kibbles in September and planned to show her at an open show in March. I was busy with other activities but still put a lot of effort in breaking Kibbles. March came along and we were going to clip Kibbles for the show, along with my brother’s calves. The clipping went okay, but not great. Now it was time to head to the cattle show. Let me share a funny story about my dad that our family will NEVER forget: I was still small at this age so my dad lead Kibbles to weigh-ins in the show ring which was quite a walk from our trailer. Let me remind you, it was a snowy, cold and wet March night. So my dad starts to lead Kibbles but not long after the walk started my dad is being drug through puddles and snow banks still trying to stop Kibbles. Through my experience with Albert I Finally, he let go but he was covered in learned to never give up on anything. yuck from head to toe! We eventually He gave my family and I many laughs caught her and I even showed her the and memories. My hope is that for the next day with no problems. I showed Kibbles at Calhoun and Sac county [Iowa] fairs. She threw a couple fits and tried to get away from me. However, I never gave up but she knew exactly how to frustrate me.

I brought him home along with my brother’s two calves. Later I named him Albert. Something I noticed right away was Albert loved to eat! I could walk in the barn and find him standing and waiting patiently in the feed bunk, even at 1,200 pounds. He easily earned the nickname of “Tank” by many including judges. He was a very special calf for my family and I. Not only because he would follow me around the yard Kayla poses for a picture with her calf Albert, but surprisingly won Overall Market a.k.a. ‘Tank’. Animal at the Calhoun County Fair and Sac County Fair. Since Albert won two county fairs, it opened the doors for Albert and I to show in the Governor’s Charity Steer Show at the Iowa State Fair. Kayla Degner was born and raised in rural Lytton, IA on a diversified grain and livestock family farm. She graduated from Rockwell City-Lytton in May 2012 and currently attends Iowa State University studying Agricultural Communications. Her past involved many agriculture venues. Is Life Outdoors In Rural Areas Changing? Few activities are as pleasant and restorative as a walk around one’s farm or ranch in the evening when sunset is occurring. Even in the rain or during winter, outdoor hikes renew my perspective and replenish energy. With the many changes occurring in modern life, is the amount of time people spend outdoors changing? Do people involved in agriculture spend less time outdoors now than in the past?

The average American spends five percent of available time outdoors, according to recent time studies. That includes time spent outside buildings and vehicles while involved in work, going places and outdoor leisure activities. The National Park Service says the amount of time spent by visitors at U.S. national parks declined 15 percent over the past two decades, although the number of visitors increased. A sample of U.S. adults surveyed in 2008 reportedly spent 25 percent less time than two decades earlier in outdoor activities such as hunting, fishing and camping.

A University of Michigan study indicated a stratified random sample of U.S. children in 2000 spent 4 to 7 minutes outside daily. Two more recent studies found the amount of time spent by kids outdoors decreased since 2000; another study indicated 40 percent of the surveyed kids in 2009 spent more time outdoors than in 2007, while 15 percent of kids spent less time, and 45 percent remained the same.

Some of the same concerns about the outdoors that bother the general public also bother rural and farm residents, but not all in the same way. Rural residents are accustomed to bad weather and people who raise livestock have to go outside to tend to their animals or to get to their barns. Urban neighborhoods where gangs prevail make people on the streets uncomfortable. Most metropolitan neighborhoods, like rural areas, are relatively safe. Urban and suburban residents say they dislike odors and air pollution such as vehicle exhaust fumes, smog and factory smells, and avoid them by staying indoors. Both metropolitan and rural residents have concerns about health issues (e.g., allergies, asthma). Respiratory health concerns are worsening for rural residents who live near large swine and poultry production units, cattle feedlots and dairies. A growing body of research studies undertaken at multiple locations over the past two decades indicates rural residents increasingly cite noxious odors from large confined animal facilities and pesticide exposures as deterrents to spending time outdoors. Marilyn and I choose to not spend time outside our house on days when the wind is in the “wrong direction,” because we live next door to a large cattle feedlot.

Vitamin D comes from sunlight. Vitamin D helps us absorb calcium and phosphorus, reduces blood pressure, helps fight depression, and aids in the treatment of diabetes and some cancers.

· Caring for others – 1.2 hours and · Other – 1.7 hours American children spent almost 55 hours per week watching television, texting and playing video games, according to a 2010 report by the Nielsen Company, the same organization that calculates television viewership ratings. These same children spend less than three hours each week reading books.

An analysis of reader comments in various articles about the subject suggests several primary reasons: uncomfortable weather, disagreeable smells, preference for indoor activities, unsafe neighborhoods and exposures to substances that can worsen medical conditions such as asthma.

Are farm and ranch residents also spending less time outdoors? The Exposure Factors Handbook produced by the Environmental Protection Agency does not report time spent outdoors by various occupational groups.

It would seem that people engaged in agriculture today probably spend less time outdoors than in past generations because of mechanization and different required tasks. Today’s agriculturalists spend more time in the office, indoor livestock facilities, trucks and machinery cabs than in the past.

Sometimes we have to drive to a place with non-foul air to enjoy the outdoors. We still need our Vitamin D.

I could find no systematically collected data about the amount of time farm and ranch people spend outdoors or any trend changes. If someone knows of objective data on the subject, please tell me.

Hunting, fishing, gardening, going for walks and other outdoor activities help me look at life with a different perspective than when engrossed in work or confined inside buildings. The Song of September The growling of thunder in the distance and the buildup of purple and blue storm clouds on the distant horizon are warning us of yet another late summer rainstorm. Hopefully, it won’t bring any hail. Once again, hail has been the bane of my existence all summer. Miss Maggie, my little Sheltie dog, does NOT like hailstorms and is begging to come inside. I’ll let her in and she’ll make a run for my bed where she will snuggle up on the pillows and bark at the thunder. It can’t ‘get her’ while she’s safe in the house!

for new cleaning rags when I have old clothing that will serve the same purpose. That old t-shirt I ripped while cleaning the chicken house can be used to mop the floor, and the money I save can be used somewhere else in the budget. If something I’m tossing has buttons, I’m like my grandmother – I save them! I have several old canning jars full of assorted buttons, and they make a colorful addition to the family room right now. But if I need a button, I know where to find one!

September is one of my favorite months. It is a little cooler than July and August, when the thermometer was well over 100° for days on end and it was a struggle to keep enough water on the garden even with the deep mulch layer.

After closets are cleaned and set to rights, I begin on the dresser drawers and repeat the same sorting process as I did for the closet –this to keep, that to toss. As I work, I’m reminded of how blessed I am to have so much.

Bright eyed little ones are ‘off to school’, some for the first time. Some are new and wondering if they can ‘find a friend’ and others are looking forward to seeing the old friends they haven’t seen all summer. A rainy day gives me a chance to work inside for a while. I have a couple of closets that need organized. I take everything out of the closet, wipe down the walls and shelves and then sort out what to keep and what to give away or toss. I will pack away some of the items in clear plastic storage boxes to set back on the shelves with the things I’ll wear next summer. Some will be set aside to be recycled into cleaning rags. Not much point in paying good money

As a child growing up, I remember the times when we had just three of everything. Three dresses – two for school and one for Sunday church. Three sets of undergarments – one for on, one for off (in the wash) and one in the drawer and we were lucky to have that much, as some had even less. Some of us had just one pair of shoes per year. Cardboard soles were the norm for many and those would last just a day or two. Socks were darned (patched) as they were ‘hard to come by’ for many families. As I said, we are very blessed! Back then, there was no such thing as a thrift store or second hand clothing shop, and the concept of a yard sale hadn’t been created yet. Sometimes one would get things

End of Summer Savings, De-Itch Bug Bites, Ant Hill Remover and More Tips END OF SUMMER SAVINGS It’s the end of the season for summer clothing and a chance to do some serious bargain hunting. There are still a couple of months when there will days warm enough to wear the summer tops and pants. I recently hit the ‘clearance’ racks at a department store and found a few real bargains! I found a cotton shirt I can wear all winter. It was originally marked at $ 24.95, but was clearance priced at just $3.00 – but when I went to pay for it, the lady at the checkout counter said it was marked down again – to just 97 cents! I found a pair of new jeans that had been originally marked at $85, and then reduced down again and again until I bought them for just $9.00! I wear a lot of t-shirts around the house and I am not too picky about colors; I got a couple of them too, for only 49 cents each! If your children are school aged, it’s a great time to find some bargain clothing that will work for school that won’t break the bank and wreck the budget. I am always on the lookout for items to use for gifts, and at times have found bedding/sheets and blankets (last years’ colors) at a price I can afford. If you have kids, you know how fast they can grow. A 50 cent t-shirt or pair of pants the next size or two bigger will ‘keep’ for another year and give you a head start on future school shopping.

NEATEST GARAGE ON THE BLOCK

To get rid of anthills in the yard or garden you simply pour boiling water over the little hills. Tor bigger ones, I use either a sharpened stick to enlarge the hole or in the case of those ugly red and black biting ants, I use a shovel to dig a cavity in the middle of the hill and then pour a bucket of boiling water in the hole. The heat kills the eggs, larva and the queen in short order and no more ants!

Use garbage cans to corral those garden hoses that are so hard to handle and hang in the fall. We also use a garbage can to hold sprinklers, and hand tools and a third one holds the boys’ baseballs, bats, gloves, basketballs etc. keeping everything neat and organized.

FRUIT FLIES NO MORE This time of year when so many of us have a kitchen full of produce to can/ freeze or dry, the fruit flies multiply like crazy. To get rid of them, put some water and a little sugar and vinegar in a small jar or little bowl. Add a couple of drops of dish soap and set the container on the counter. The flies are drawn to the sweet vinegar and then stick to the soap scum and are no more! I’ve also used just a little sweet pickle juice and a couple of drops of dish soap with the same results.

PATCH A WINDOW SCREEN A tree branch poked a tiny hole in a window screen. It’s a pain to take the darn thing to the hardware store to get it replaced, and the bugs are adept at finding the hole and getting in the house. A good ‘quick fix’ is simply to paint over the hole with some airplane glue or other similar glue that dries clear and can’t be seen, but the hole is patched and the bugs can’t get in. We write the name of the ‘whatsit’ right on the outside of the shoe bags so things can be returned to their proper place as soon as they are use.

I buy the cheapest store brand dishwashing soap I can find for the men to use in the shop on their greasy hands. It works just as well as the fancy ‘shop hand wash’, and it costs a lot less money. (tip submitted by LE, SD)

Later on there will be the announcements of boxes of squash, onions, potatoes, and all types of fall apples. September is a good time to make up several batches of apple butter. I’ll put some in pint jars for table and baking use and more into smaller jars for my gift giving and Christmas baskets. The rain has ceased with nothing more than the loud bangs of thunder that rattle Miss Maggie’s nerves; the land has had a much-needed drink of water, and thankfully, there was no hail this time. There is a cool breeze blowing and it’s time for me to take a stroll to the chicken house for fresh feed and a quick check for late eggs. I’ll also take a stroll by the garden to see how many tomatoes I’ll get to pick tomorrow, and figure out something for the evening meal. Tomorrow is another day and will be spent outside for the most part. I have perennials that need dividing. Where to put them is the next question, and the garden needs attention. I have parsley that needs clipped again for drying as well as the basil and oregano. (Methinks the dehydrator needs to come off the pantry shelf and put to work again.)

Borrowing is Not the Answer for Financial Obligations Detroit has become the largest U.S. city to date to file for bankruptcy. Saddled with more than $18 billion in debt, a number of factors have been blamed for Detroit’s descent into financial disaster. Tax revenues have shrunk, and one of Detroit’s biggest financial obligations is workers pensions. A recent governor's statement said that 38 cents of every city dollar goes toward debt repayment, legacy costs and other obligations. I surely don’t have all the answers, but you just can’t spend much more than you take in and wish for miracles to happen, or someone else to bail you out. Our United States Government is actually doing worse than Detroit. We are borrowing 40 cents on every dollar that we spend and Obamacare will cause us to borrow more yet. I am not saying Obamacare is good or bad, just that it is not paid for, like Detroit’s pensions weren’t. And we can’t blame the people who were working 30 to 50 years ago and are now collecting their pension money. Borrowing is not the answer for paying off obligations. The easiest answer is across the board cuts for everyone in order to balance the budget–whether that be 10%, 20% or more. Not easy to do by any stretch, but probably the most responsible solution. I still remember when our Grandparents wouldn’t buy anything unless they had all the money in hand or in the bank, and borrowing was not an option. Now that was responsible spending in my opinion! Our Government once operated in a similar fashion. God expects better of us also. He has enlisted in us many opportunities to be stewards of His ‘stuff’. We have become used to getting what we want, when we want it – instant gratification. We forget that we used to be very happy with less, or at least waiting until we could afford what it was we wanted.

I Timothy 6:6-10: But Godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world, and we will take nothing out. But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that. People who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. Matthew 16:26: What good will it be for a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his own soul?

Philippians 4:11-13: I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do everything through him who gives me strength. And finally, some words of wisdom and confidence from Paul to us in Hebrews 13:1-5: Keep on loving each other as brothers. Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing some people have entertained angels without knowing it. Remember those in prison as if you were their fellow prisoners, and those who are mistreated as if you yourselves were suffering. Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral. Keep your lives free from the love of money and be CONTENT with what you have, because God has said, “Never will I leave you: never will I forsake you.” When we put our eyes and thoughts on God’s Word and plans, we can be content and happy. Berry Picking Season is Here Whoever coined the phrase “life is just a bowl of berries” must have been thinking of dessert on our farm in summer. Our fingers are stained a bluish-purple from an afternoon of picking. Since late June, berries from the garden have been making their way into bowls on the kitchen table. Strawberries, that delicious fruit, are fairly easy to grow. With several varieties planted, the season begins with our favorite, an heirloom variety that my farmer's family has grown here for decades. It is a small berry that is a deep red through and through, and has me crawling through the plants for two weeks in search of the exquisite berry that freezes well. The other strawberry varieties are appreciated also, giving us almost a month of fresh from the garden strawberry eating. Once those are done, there is an explosion of berries all clamoring for our taste buds, requiring different modes of picking, exercise and danger. The sunshine is good. The gooseberry blooms early and from its spot in the garden their flowers are often ignored. This year the crop looks good. As we have shared them with many of the visitors to the farm the last few weeks. It is fun to watch their reaction and hear how they describe the taste. Depending on the gooseberry ripeness it can be tart, sweet, or both. I hear they are good in pies, but we tend to eat gooseberries fresh or frozen without sugar. They almost need a 'be careful' sign warning of the thorns one encounters when reaching for the fruit that grows all along the stems. Biting flies and mosquitoes find a stationary berry picker. My arms and legs bear scratches from picking gooseberries (or is it from the wild black raspberries?). Their canes also have nasty thorns, but at least the 'black caps' are borne high on the canes.

The fruit is well worth any scratch, as the flavor is delightful. Tame black raspberry plants are sporting berries that are not quite ready yet. Red raspberries are also displaying their first crop of the year. A smaller crop in early summer, the raspberries almost melt in our mouths on these hot days. They too have thorns. A bird in a nearby honeysuckle scolds me all the time I am picking berries. The currants and black currants that grow in a shady spot seem to be taking a rest this year, or perhaps the birds have beat me to it as seems to be the case with the cherry trees. Only two trees remain of the eight we have planted the through the years. But from my kitchen window, I see birds continually flying in and out as though it were the newest and latest new fast food pickup window. This year, I will be canning cherries with guests from Houston, Texas, who had a lot of fun picking the fruit! Mulberries have out produced the demands of the farm birds. As we gently shook the branches to hasten picking, our bare feet were stained purple by the berries on the ground. Usually we just eat the berries fresh, but this year I am trying my hand at mulberry jelly. The nice thing about picking fruit on these hot summer days is that we employ the policy of eat as you go! Just make sure more ends up in the bucket than the mouth. It sure makes all that crawling, bending, kneeling, stretching, climbing into the tree or ladders well worth the effort. ­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­———————————————————— Renae B. The days are still long–though not for much longer! We put a lot of pressure on our poor little summer. We are supposed to do all our usual stuff, plus yard work, outside projects and some good old-fashioned fun, all in this tiny window of opportunity. Now school and other fall activities and routines begin. Many of us are guilty of trying to cram way too much into a 24-hour day. I struggle to accomplish as much as I can in the weekly Monday to Friday grind. During this, I try to capture that elusive thing some people call “leisure time” or “family time” in this brief season of late summer or early fall. How can we get it all done, especially during the week?

Take a walk around the block. I actually have to remind myself to do this, so I am not totally embarrassed to include it. There is something about being outside, even for a short period on a hot muggy day, which unties mental knots like nothing else can. It

also is a great chance to meet and to connect with neighbors. After all, if we are all going to hide inside with our air conditioners, it might as well be winter. If you don’t believe me, I ask you to try it three times in the next week, before you tell me it was foolish to mention. Please. Go to bed at the same time every night. Give yourself at least fifteen minutes of winding down time every night— something just for you such as reading time, a relaxing shower, or a conversation with a partner. Try using this time for anything you consider relaxing except watching television. Why not television? Come on! Who watches television for fifteen minutes and then promptly turns it off? Don’t get hooked and subsequently tired! We all need relaxation and rest. Our bodies appreciate a regular routine too. Take time to plan and schedule leisure, fun, and family activities for the weekend. If I don’t make the effort to schedule the “good stuff” on the weekend calendar, it

gets swallowed up by errands, projects, and even Saturday morning cartoons. Do you ever ask yourself, “Where did the weekend go?” There will usually be an endless to-do list of things to go buy or household projects to tackle. Make time for fun. Take it upon yourself to make sure the fun stuff happens too. When I am at the mall, there is a little nagging voice in my head telling me that my time could be better spent elsewhere. Guess what? When I am on a family bike ride or reading with one of my kids, that yucky little voice is gone. It is up to me to schedule the right stuff. Finally, reduce the guilt. When will we learn that we really can’t have our cake and eat it too? At least, we can’t have it all in the same tiny window of time! From the time you walk in the door to the time you go to bed on a week night, you only have four or five hours to deal with dinner, children’s sporting events, homework, errands, household tasks, the mail, and whatever you brought home from work. Give yourself a break. After all, if you don’t, who will?

Here are some ideas that help in the quest for mid-week free time—that is, when I remember to use them: Have weeknight schedules for errand running, household care and meals. For example, maybe Wednesday is errand night, Thursday is laundry night, and Friday is pizza night. Try not to run errands on weekends because everyone else has the same bright idea. You will spend more time standing in long lines than getting things done. Meals require less mental effort if you are willing to let them be scheduled too. Somewhere along the line, we have gotten the idea that schedules and habits are restrictive things. I would like to suggest that schedules are actually very freeing. Try to put household tasks on a schedule. Why? So you don’t have to worry about them or even think about them the other six days of the week! Turn off the television on weeknights. Eliminate this time waster to free up time for things you need to get done and things you want to get done. Possible exception: Use television to entertain young children while you get dinner on the table. This isn’t “cheating” if it saves your sanity and makes you a calmer parent. Right? A16

Who Has Forgotten the Important Role of 4-H? As I spoke to the crowd at the Burke County Fair, one could not help but notice the large 4-H banner hanging as a backdrop to the self-made alter. It was symbolic of the message, for which 4-H was the centerpiece of a podium adorned with a hand carved cross and a bouquet of flowers from the funeral of Larry Swensen, a board member of the Burke County Fair. Mr. Swenson was a strong advocate of 4-H, the fair, and the state of North Dakota. His untimely death leaves a big void in the community for which he served his entire life. His legacy will be honored by 4-H and the fair by a proposed permanent commemorative, yet to be announced. A replica of the handcrafted diamond willow cross, a tree that is native to the Burke County Fairgrounds., is available upon request. OBSERVATION: While at the fair, I took the time to observe some of the livestock judging, and couldn’t believe that I was seeing animals as good as any I’ve judged at any county fair in the country. Though the fair has declined in stature since I was a kid, the quality of the livestock has improved exponentially over the years, thanks to the influence of 4-H. The entire fair board is to be commended for putting on a fair that exceeded all expectations, and marks a new beginning for a fair that has been in a declining mode for several years. The fair board members are all new since my involvement some fifty years ago. And with the passing of Mr. Swenson and Mr. Nielsen there will be ever-new faces to carry the fair forward. (Look for people with a positive vision of bigger and better things to come.) Mr. Nielson joined the board in 1956, the year I graduated from both 4-H and high school, but would like to have shared his passion for the fair. Mr. Swenson’s time on the board was cut far too short, but it seems that Steve Pederson is picking up the slack, moving the fair forward at an enthusiastic pace. Just as 4-H is the centerpiece of the Burke County Fair, so it is with most counties across the country; thus it is of utmost importance that we continue to financially support 4-H. ing federally appropriated toward 4-H, it should be our objective to not only raise enough money to keep our 4-H programs alive and well, but to philosophically and politically up-grade 4-H to a higher level of credibility. From the County to the National scene there has to be a newfound recognition of the importance of 4-H. Both Congress and County Supervisors have to recognize that 4-H is about building character and leadership. The purpose of the projects is to teach skills, but understanding the value of relationships and how to maintain them is far more important that that of finishing a steer or baking a cake. Would this country be in the financial mess that it’s in if our current leaders were as astute as our founding fathers? The government, way back in the late 1800’s, saw fit to create 4-H, realizing that this country would be built on the backs of its youth. The only thing that has changed in all those years is our deviation from our roots. Greed and a self-serving bureaucracy that can’t see beyond 'me first' have watered down those solid Christian values. Giving bailouts to failed a company that, in turn, reward incompetency with multi-million dollar bonuses, is like giving trophies and purple ribbons to he/she who stands at the bottom of the class. How can we justify such financial waste while at the same time say there isn’t enough money to support 4-H? Rewarding failure, while penalizing success makes little or no sense to me! What kind of a role model have we become for our kids? The younger generation is going to have to pay for our mistakes, but let’s not compound the situation by removing the one model in our life that has stood the test of time and produced a platform of stability and leadership. 4-H is the one constant from which many of us draw strength and measure competitive standards in life.

4-H instills these values in a way that leaves a lifetime impression. Do we really want to see our kids cheated out of this, one of life ’s finest opportunities, to develop character and responsibility?

My Personal 4-H Achievement Though the love of horse racing was clearly my passion, it was those 4-H values of HEAD-HEART-HANDS and HEALTH that most impacted my life, as exemplified by the following story. It was a typical Saturday chore day back on the farm, doing those extra things that never got done during the week. The only thing different about this Saturday was the urgency to get it all done early enough to attend an afternoon county 4-H activities meeting. It was obvious that my Dad was more engaged than usual, and finally, he just couldn’t hold it back any longer and blurted out, “I’m not supposed to tell you this, but you’re going to get a big award this afternoon!” He didn’t tell me what it was, but it was pretty obvious that this was his cue for telling me to kick it into high gear and be prepared to be at my best. This meant dressing a little nicer, being on time, and on my best behavior. There is this ol’ folklore about dads living their lives vicariously through their son. This was the epiphany of this all too familiar scenario. Just as Dad was always front and center in his involvement in all of my 4-H projects, this occasion was the “icing on the cake”. He just couldn’t contain himself in the exuberance of the moment. When the county extension agent, Johnson, presented me with the Alpha Gamma Rho state achievement award it was like the most special thing that had ever happened in my life. A gold, personalized watch to be

held in perpetuity was second only to that of my parents’ sense of pride. Though there are times when working on the farm that 0ne’s finest jewelry shouldn’t be worn, it was such a statement of achievement that I just couldn’t take it off. But much to the chagrin of my mother, I accidently lost it while moving machinery from one field to another. It slipped off my arm, in the most precarious of situations, and later retrieved in that of an unbelievable fluke. It was my mother’s relentless determination of faith that found her following an old country road grader down the road that she had been searching with a fine-tooth comb. In her mind it was a lost cause, except that she and God had a working relationship like none other. The sun was shining brighter and higher than I had ever seen it, and sure enough there was this bright glistening reflection; almost blinding as she went for the light. It was the watch! There was nothing that could upstage this experience, except maybe the following year when I was enrolled in college. The announcement wasn’t so dramatic, but, nonetheless still exciting. It was a more formal notice, as I again had been selected for he State Achievement Award. This time it was a trip to 4-H Congress in Chicago, leadership involvement that more clearly defined my purpose and direction in life.

The standard bearer of 4-H is that of teaching kids to be good stewards of their life and www.valleyirrigation.com the lives of those they affect. Life isn’t just about doing for you; it is equally that of doing for others. The more you give, the more you get back in return!

However, are we up to this challenge or do we stand back with our hands in our pocket? 4-H has taught the skills to self-sustain and overcome the obstacle that life throws our way. It has shown us strength in the weakest of times and a determination that is unmatched. Isn’t this what dreams are made of? Isn’t this why we should step up to the plate and fight for what’s right? Our current economic disaster represents such a contradiction of values. Food and shelter are in such desperate peril; putting businesses, families, and relationships at risk. Contrast this with kids playing sports for multi-million dollar salaries. Is this the message we want to send our kids?

Talent, persistence, and ability enter the equation of success for any kid, be it that of sports or a lifetime achievement of 4-H. Both 4-H and sports have carved a niche in the lives of our kids. Both play an important role in the development of their future. But to disproportionately support one at the expense of the other seems a little disingenuous. Over 20 years ago Jim Strauss suffered a major heart attack and was told he would need bypass surgery or he would die. Jim was born into a family of herbalists stretching back to the 17th century. Recalling Temple’s comment about how the elastrator ring didn’t provide sufficient tension for complete ligation, a problem the Callicrate Bander finally solved in 1994, he decided to work on a more humane method of castration for young animals that would replace the highly stressful elastrator ring. Callicrate was explaining the elastrator ring dilemma to friend, Roy Harbach, an experienced aerospace manufacturing engineer. Roy came up with a few ideas, and between them, the Callicrate ‘WEE’ Bander was invented. “We’re talking very young animals. The new Callicrate ‘WEE’ Bander is designed for newborn calves, sheep and goats, up to approximately three weeks of age. It’s for those producers who want to castrate early,” he explained. The Callicrate ‘WEE’ Bander was released in January 2012 and the response has been very positive. The ‘WEE’ band is tight enough that it shuts off the blood supply and the pain response as well. Studies of high-tension banding have demonstrated that the complete negation of blood flow triggers a natural analgesic effect that blocks pain while minimizing swelling and related complications. ‘WEE’ Bander

“Today ranchers still, for the most part, castrate early using elastrator bands or a knife. Then they typically implant the calves with a variety of synthetic growth promotants,” said Callicrate. “If they would wait until later they could grow their beef naturally and still have the growth and development benefits of testosterone.”

“Many ranchers apply an elastrator ring, then drive over the hill and don’t notice what happens next,” he said. “Because elastrator rings are not tight enough, the animals experience pain until swelling finally blocks the blood flow and the pain eventually subsides.”

But, after years of promoting delayed castration, he began to realize he wouldn’t convince many more ranchers to delay their castration practices. It was a tradition that was hard to break.

Until that happens, Callicrate said, “these young animals lay on their side in pain, they roll and they paddle. It’s particularly noticeable in lambs and goats. They do a lot of vocalizing. They are in severe pain for a prolonged period of time.”

The header sweep is powered by a hydraulic motor connected to the reel drive which allows for variable speed adjustment. Each drag arm is connected to a spring bar, which allows for tension release when necessary. Also, by using a “V” belt drive slippage is possible when needed. The design allows for easy installation on most headers.

This is a goose-neck unit that opens for access in or out of the front. There is a total of 16 gates throughout the system. On each end of the alley there are two sets of 6’ gates that open between the split gooseneck hitch and the rear axle assembly. The rancher has two sorting pens measuring 15’ 6” X 15’ 6” with a height of all panels at 6’. This gives the rancher the ability to tie into the sorting system with any type of portable corral or stock trailer in the field. A hydraulic system sets the unit down on the ground, and when ready to move, lifts it up for transport. The hydraulic system is operated by a 12-volt battery charged with a solar panel and the ease of pushing a button. All systems are assembled with spring-loaded latches on the interior gates for added convenience. A 10’ gate allows you to drive thru the alleyway with a cake truck.
