ussell Sonnenberg is the artist behind The Yesteryear Collection, a series of 50 tractor prints. His works have been very popular with tractor enthusiasts. What fascinates these collectors about Russell Sonnenberg art is his brilliant ability to capture the essence of nostalgia and bring it back to the viewers’ memory in vivid detail. “Oh I remember,” is a common phrase that people often use when admiring one of his pictures. Russell grew up in Kossuth County in Iowa about 26 miles northeast of Algona. He had been quoted as saying, “I grew up in the horse and buggy days.” He began painting as a child mainly due his Mother’s encouragement. Of course, his life on the farm heavily influenced his work a lot. In his younger days, he worked as a tractor mechanic at an Allis Chalmer dealership. His fascination with Allis Chalmers is evident in the number of paintings he has done of that specific brand. Over the past 42 years, he had painted various nostalgic country and farm scenes. At the suggestion of his lifelong wife Audrey, “paint what you know” he returned to painting tractors.
Russell has painted many different models trying to make sure that nobody gets left out. Many artists will focus on John Deere and International. Russell paints models of Allis Chalmers, Minneapolis Moline, Ford, Oliver, Massey-Harris, and Case to round out the strong blend of collectible tractors. Russell paints for the sheer enjoyment of the craft usually during the long winter months in the basement of his home in Forest City, Iowa. He does not paint in the summer as he is usually too busy with other activities. Each of his paintings has a unique story to tell. He will be releasing four new prints this summer. The stars of his paintings are, of course, the tractors. Russell Sonnenberg's original oil paintings are on display at the Kossuth Agricultural & Motorsports Musuem in Algona, Iowa. The museum hours are currently from 1 - 4 p.m. on Sundays, and the museum located at 800 East Fair Street in Algona (just off Hwy 169). Prints of his works are also available for purchase at the museum.
Russell enjoys feeling close to nature and purposely puts a bur oak in the left side of his paintings. He has always felt that tree had its own character and enjoys using it as a trademark that makes his work distinguishable from all other artists.

Russell never entered art competitions or painted for fame, as so many other modern day artists. He just wanted to paint something that would touch the hearts of tractor collectors and people who have those nostalgic fond memories of the farm life. People love to reflect back on the simpler times of the forties and fifties. With this in mind, and a great deal of research, Russell goes to work on each painting treating it as his newest masterpiece. A great deal of research goes into each painting to make sure that it is historically accurate. In order to pay very close attention to the mechanical detail of the various tractor models, he uses his camera to take photographs. Russell said, “I take a picture of this part and then that part, plus I make sure that I take the pictures at the angle I want so I can use them for reference. Also, I like to take photos at 2:00 in the afternoon because then the shadows aren’t weird and the sun isn’t as harsh as it is at noon. I also like to have owner’s manuals (as a reference).” Each painting requires about 150 hours of painting time, plus about 100 hours of research. He says each time he has timed himself, it comes up to be about the same for each painting.

New ProAG Bale Hiker Maximizes Durability, Speed and Efficiency ProAG, the Hay Products Division of Morris Industries recently announced the introduction of the new ProAG Bale Hiker™, a round bale handling machine built to meet the demands of today’s diversified agricultural industry. Built for durability and efficiency in handling heavy round bales, the ProAG Bale Hiker is engineered to increase productivity in the field, which directly affects the farmer’s bottom line. “Operators are running equipment at increased speeds and picking bales faster due to higher HP tractors,” says Lisa Gaskin, ProAG-Morris Marketing and Sales Manager in Billings, MT. “The Bale Hiker matches this challenge and the operator’s need to quickly and safely handle round bales, which, in turn, maximizes profitability.” The ProAG Bale Hiker is engineered to work efficiently with all round bale material in the majority of applications. “The farmer doesn’t need to own various pieces of equipment. Whether you’re picking bales consisting of cornstalks, beanstalks, pea stalks, hay, alfalfa, straw or high moisture, the ProAG Bale Hiker will stand up to the workload,” says Gaskin. The ProAG Bale Hiker’s rugged durability has been successfully put to the test moving tough cornstalk bales destined for ethanol plants and feedlots. Corn fields, notorious for rougher ground, can reduce bale handling efficiency to a crawl. “The ProAG Bale Hiker’s walking axle makes the difference,” Gaskin says. “The walking axle gives it the ability to run on rough ground with ease. Basically, the operator can count on reliability and ease of operation in any round bale application.” The bale is picked up on the right side of the pulling unit. The loading arm, with a built-in bale turner, gives the operator the ability to go into the bale at almost any
direction and turn the bale prior to picking and lifting it to load onto the Hiker.
Memory Saver Accessory Kit (#9104) is available separately.
The ProAG Bale Hiker runs off two hydraulic tractor remotes with minimum technical demands. This rugged and durable machine has a dual walking axle, with a push bar on both sides so the operator can unload a single side of bales at one time or both sides together.
_____________________________________
“You’re always on the go without having to stop, which improves efficiency,” says Gaskin. “With flow and ease of operation, the operator can pick a large amount of bales in a short period of time.” The ProAG Bale Hiker turns round bale loading, transporting, and unloading into a fast, easy, one-person operation saving time, money and labor. Lindsay Announces NFTrax Airless Wheel Assembly Lindsay Corporation, maker of Zimmatic irrigation systems, announces NFTrax, a new airless wheel assembly with greater traction and improved track maintenance. NFTrax is an airless design that will never go flat and keeps wheel ruts to a minimum, according to Tanner Hoffman, Zimmatic by Lindsay product manager. “With NFTrax, there are no punctures, no air pressure to check, no bad sidewalls, less rutting, and longer overall wheel life,” Hoffman says. The wheel’s steel core vulcanized rubber track is tensioned over 10 drive points. In contrast, standard pneumatic and solid tires apply greater pressure to the middle of the track base as they roll, generating a deeper trough for runoff. According to Hoffman, NFTrax applies more even pressure across the entire belt surface, forming a flatter, shallower imprint.

WD3 Series Windrowers Offer Industry-Firsts to Producers The redesigned WD3 series windrowers come equipped with an industry-first: an autoguidance system managed through the Case IH AFS Pro 700 control center.
“Solid tire alternatives may provide ‘no flat’ performance but have limited flexibility, forming deeper ruts and creating more stress on the irrigation machine’s driveline,” Hoffman says. “NFTrax adapts to terrain and field conditions without getting stuck or putting undue stress on the machine. Our tests show NFTrax’s wheel track depth can be 30-50 percent less than that of standard tires in similar operating conditions.”
The new WD3 series relies on the AFS Pro 700 autoguidance system, making operation easier with improved drivability.
“NFTtrax is a home run deal,” says Sammy Stahl, irrigation manager at Stahl Farms in Moses Lake, Washington, who has been using NFTrax on his Zimmatic pivot. “Not having to check for flat tires is a major breakthrough because there is so much less downtime.” Lindsay, Nebraska, grower David Fowlkes also has been using the new airless wheel assembly. “NFTrax is better on my alfalfa plants compared to traditional tires,” Fowlkes says. “It has more area on the ground and doesn’t push out as much soil to create a sidewall.” NOVE M B ER 2013

Arclin Introduces NitroGain™ UI Urease Inhibitor for Crops and Turf
nitrogen-focused crops like corn, cotton, rice, coffee and wheat, and turf grasses.
Company to Be Exclusive U.S. Seller of Eco Agro Resource's Environmentally Friendly NBPT-Based Technology.
New Case IH Early Riser 5 Series Planters Deliver Photocopy Plants and Higher Yield Potential
Arclin, a chemistry and applications company for the agriculture, building, design, and energy industries, and Eco Agro Resources, makers of agricultural nutrient products, announced that Arclin will be the exclusive seller of Eco Agro's nitrogen urease inhibitor in the United States. Arclin will offer the fertilizer additive as part of its NitroGain™ suite of products. Called NitroGain™ UI, the safe and innovative product reduces nitrogen loss from urea-based fertilizers, giving crops more time to absorb vital nutrients and lessening nitrogen runoff into ground water and streams. "Eco Agro Resources has a history of developing technologically advanced and environmentally friendly agricultural products," said Bradley Bolduc, senior director of performance products at Arclin, of the company's decision to partner with the North Carolina-based company. "Their urease inhibitor was a logical choice to add to our growing line of agricultural products aimed at increasing crop yields and protecting environmental resources," he said. Arclin's NitroGain™ suite also includes a slow release nitrogen fertilizer.

Case IH Early Riser planters are designed based on extensive customer input and Case IH Agronomic Design principles and to deliver photocopy plants. The all-new AccuStat seed sensors now available on all Early Riser 5 series planters allow farmers to monitor and map seed spacing information live on the AFS Pro 700 display. “Every farmer knows how critical it is to plant within the optimum window to achieve maximum yields,” says Bill Hoeg, Case IH Planter Marketing Manager in North America. “Our new Early Riser 5 series planters are engineered based upon Case IH Agronomic DesignSM principles and use multiple patented features to provide accurate and consistent seed placement, moving farmers beyond picket fence stands to photocopy plants so that they can realize higher yields.
Blended with UAN (urea ammonium nitrate) fertilizers, NitroGain™ UI urease inhibitor reduces nitrogen loss by hindering the conversion of nitrogen to ammonia and carbon dioxide. Nitrogen thus stays in the soil longer, helping increase crop health and yield and protecting water sources by reducing runoff. By increasing nitrogen efficiency, NitroGain™ UI can also reduce fertilizer costs. Patent-pending, it is based on n-butyl triophosphoric triamide, or NBPT, technology. Nitrogain™ UI has low toxicity and is non-carcinogenic, making it considerably safer than other commercially available urease inhibitors. It can be used either to coat urea granules or mixed with urea ammonium nitrate systems. Its most common applications are A4
vacuum or pressure, or down-pressure that might slow down your productivity in terms of acres covered per hour. The new bulk fill system on Case IH Early Riser planters provides reliable seed delivery from the tank to the mini hopper, no matter the seed population or seed coating, so farmers can take advantage of the yield benefits associated with these updated practices. The AccuStat system monitors seed singulation, skips and multiples. It also provides the spacing coefficient of variation (CV) that gives farmers the ability to compare the quality of spacing between different rows, speeds and populations. AccuStat accurately monitors most seed crops. “Early Riser planters help growers go beyond picket fence stands to deliver photocopy – or uniform emergence, same leaf stage plants,” Hoeg explains. “While picket fence stands are needed, photocopy plants are the key to impacting and growing the biggest yields.” For more information, visit www.caseih.com. _____________________________________

New AG PRO 12-20 Dozer Blades Increase Flexibility, Capacity The new AG PRO 12-20 adjustable-width dozer blade by Grouser Products is making it easier than ever for tractor operators to increase efficiency while maintaining compliance with the most stringent road regulations. The AG PRO 12-20’s design has a variable width blade that allows adjustments from 12 to 20 feet. With hydraulic cylinders on both sides of the blade, and a clear measurement indicator visible from the cab, operators can make adjustments quickly, easily and precisely. The lever-controlled hydraulic cylinders adjust the width to different capacity requirements or prepare the unit for road travel. An operator can extend or retract the blade on the fly to gain more or less pushing capacity depending on the needs of the project. On farms and ranches, the AG PRO 12-20 offers flexibility in hard-to-reach areas. The ends can be easily retracted to allow wheel access to the bunker wall and then extended to maximize the amount of material transferred. Retract the blade to 12 feet and it’s ready to fit through a narrow gate or head down the road, eliminating the need to transport the unit on a trailer. This saves time when moving from job to job and meets road regulations in most states. The 72-inch height makes it one of the tallest dozer blades in the industry. It increases capacity, productivity and efficiency over other blades by allowing operators to move more material with each pass. The addition of optional box end plates increase the AG PRO 12-20’s capacity even further and effectively contain the material load over greater distances. Further, the blade’s lift height of approximately 48 inches allows operators to move large amounts of material into steeper piles with less potential for back dragging material. Like all of Grouser’s AG PRO blades, the exclusive single-lever, quick-attach feature on the 12-20 reduces hook-up and removal time, allowing a smooth and fast transition for fieldwork. The quick attach is mounted at the front of the tractor allowing the operator to quickly and efficiently align the tractor to the blade, drive forward and lock into place. To detach the blade, the operator simply unhooks the hydraulic hoses, pulls the lever behind the blade and backs out the tractor. Grouser redesigned the hydraulic hose connections at the front of the unit in one, easy-access configuration, mounting the hoses where the operator can quickly connect or disconnect the unit. The fixed location of the hoses provides easy alignment and re-attachment of the blade.

The undercarriage and lift frame of the AG PRO 12-20 are designed to provide tremendous ground clearance. Placed high underneath the tractor, the 12-20 provides maximum material movement without getting bogged down in material. The undercarriage also makes the transition from yard to fieldwork faster and easier. It serves as the extra weight needed for fieldwork, so there is no need to disassemble and reassemble OEM weight packages. Operators simply detach the blade and head for the field. The AG PRO 12-20 features an exclusive parallel lift system with top and bottom connection points that keep the blade parallel to the front of the tractor, even when it is lifted to its maximum height. This reduces weight transfer, keeps the blade closer to the tractor when lifting and maintains the ideal angle for dozing. It also provides the operator more precise control. The AG PRO 12-20 is a selected recipient of a 2013 American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers AE50 Award. The AE50 is a prestigious award that recognizes the top 50 most innovative agricultural products introduced each year. Ag Growth International Launches Brand New Website Ag Growth International (AGI) has launched a brand new website. New to the website is the addition of the entire AGI brand catalogue. All divisions under the AGI umbrella now have their complete product lines available in one centralized place where users can search via product or brand name. Also to note, the AGI Investors site has been consolidated with the main AGI site. Users can now view AGI financial reports and other news without ever leaving www.aggrowth.com.
The discharge gate opening also saw a redesign with the 6530 Grinder Mixer. The 12-inch stroke actuator has a straight guillotine type opening that opens 30 percent wider than the previously used pivot gate. This means feed is discharged faster. The 6530 Grinder Mixer boasts a longer discharge auger as well, so it will easily reach over 20 foot bins. Finally, a larger diameter on the unload system increases the discharge rate significantly. All of these improvements combine to reduce labor time and costs for the farming operation. Yet the primary benefit is not reduced costs, although that is valuable. According to a company spokesperson, the primary benefit is in the potential to see stock grow faster and more consistently. "When animals receive a consistent mix of feed quickly, they see better growth," he said. For more info visit www.artsway-mfg.com or call 712864-3131.
“We wanted to launch a fresh take on our already existing website, but up the ante by offering an easy-to-use product catalog functionality. All products are listed along with their brochures, spec sheets and manuals. This is exciting for us as a company, and an excellent resource for anyone interested in learning more about what we do at AGI”, stated Daniel Donner, Senior V.P. of Sales & Marketing. The new streamlined design encourages users to easily find links to any and all product, news or investor information. The website is yet another channel for AGI to provide accurate and up to date information to end-users.

New Structural Designs Provides Added Strength, Expanded Building Sizes to Morton Buildings Morton Building’s new concrete foundation system eliminates wood in the ground and utilizes specifically designed components and precast concrete columns to provide superior strength and increased durability in all climate conditions. “Our new precast concrete columns are specifically designed by our company and for all our buildings,” says Brian Haraf, Morton Buildings marketing manager. Morton’s proprietary concrete mix uses the latest technology in concrete. This formula uses ingredients to create a concrete that inhibits steel rebar corrosion, withstands shock, increases durability to freeze and thaw and gives an attractive, smooth concrete finish with a 10,000 psi compressive strength. “Our concrete strength is 2.5 times greater than a typical concrete foundation wall and footing system,” Haraf explains. “Some of the tallest buildings in the world use similar high-performance concrete to achieve heights that only this type of concrete can support.” Joining the new concrete foundation system debut at the Farm Progress Show was Morton Building’s hybrid building structure. “We are excited to provide these new building offerings to the agricultural industry,” says Haraf. “The needs for this market continue to evolve as farming operations expand. The size and quantity of machines these farm operations utilize continue to grow. Building structures need to advance to accommodate these industry trends, and that’s where our hybrid building structure is a perfect solution." Haraf states the hybrid building combines the superior insulating properties, aesthetics and affordability of a wood frame building with the strength and size capabilities of steel. The steel trusses in the Morton hybrid buildings allow for greater door clearance, giving owners the ability to use bigger doors with shorter walls, allowing for a lower profile building. The hybrid building also provides for more interior space. Allowing for a clear-span building up to 150 feet, owners of the hybrid building structure can experience 33 percent more space and additional interior clearance compared to traditional wood-frame construction. “The flexibility, efficiency and strength of a Morton hybrid building make it the perfect building for farming operations, riding arenas and commercial warehouses,” Haraf adds.

Compressed Air Quality for Air Plasma Cutting Systems:
How much air, do I need filtering, do I need moisture removal? Ensuring your air compressor is sized adequately for your plasma cutter and its intended usage. Sizing a compressor for a plasma cutter depends on a couple of things: 1. The minimum flow/pressure requirements of the plasma cutter you intend to use. The manufacturer can provide the specs and they can vary from model to model. A small Hypertherm Powermax30 will use about 4.5 cfm (cubic feet per minute) at 90 psi inlet pressure. A Hypertherm Powermax45 uses 6 cfm at 90 psi. If you have a small compressor with exactly the same cfm rating as the plasma, then the compressor will run continuously when you are plasma cutting; the size of the air compressor tank will allow the plasma to run for a few seconds (or minutes if the tank is huge) until the pressure drops a bit (usually to about 90 psi), then the compressor will run to try to maintain the pressure. 2. How much cutting are you planning to do? If you are a weekend hobbyist just cutting an occasional piece of steel for a project, then a compressor with a cfm rating slightly higher than the plasma will likely be adequate. If you are doing a lot of cutting, cutting thick plate (same air consumption but slower cut speeds = longer cut time) or are using the system to earn a living, and then size the compressor at 1.5 to 2 times the plasma system requirement. Another note on air for plasma systems and all air tools: Compressors take air at atmospheric pressure and increase the pressure and store it in a tank. Humidity in the air is often condensed in the tank and in the airlines, more so during humid weather. Drain your compressor tank often, and if moisture in your air lines is at all noticeable, it is a good idea to add additional filtration to the air system that absorbs or removes moisture.
How to be sure the air for the plasma system is free of moisture and particulates Most air plasma systems from reputable manufacturers have an onboard particulate filter and many also have a coalescing filter with an auto drain that will remove some moisture from air systems. For most low use situations (hobbyists and light industrial users) the onboard filter dryer is adequate. There are many situations however that will require additional steps are taken to ensure moisture does not affect performance of the plasma cutter, often these steps are needed when the system is used in extremely humid environments, or during those few weeks of the year when the hot summer weather brings humid conditions. Moisture that forms in air lines has a
NOVE M B ER 2013
tendency to condense into larger drops when the air pressure decreases as it is entering the plasma torch. When these drops enter into the high temperatures (as much as 20,000 degrees F.) in the plenum of the torch, they immediately break down into oxygen and hydrogen, which alters the normal chemical content of air in the torch. These elements will then dramatically change the plasma arc which causes the torch consumables parts to wear very quickly, altering the shape of the nozzle orifice and dramatically affecting cut quality in terms of edge squareness, dross formation, and edge smoothness. As a minimum with air systems that contain moisture be sure to drain the receiver (tank) on the air compressor at least daily. If water comes out of the bottom petcock valve of your tank, then there are moisture particles in your air lines. Draining the tank regularly will minimize the moisture and the above effects, but will not eliminate it. In order to ensure that the air receiver tank stays as moisture free as possible, install an automatic drain system that rids the tank of moisture with every pressure building cycle. The next minimal steps if moisture is found in the receiver would be to install a particulate filter that is designed to either trap water through absorption (the filter element literally absorbs water and must be changed after it is near saturation). This type of filter (a popular one is the MotorGuard M80 filter canister with its replaceable elements) should be mounted at least 20 feet downstream of the compressor, allowing the heat generated by the compressor to cool a bit as this will help to condense the water droplets and trap them in the absorption filter. Another type of moisture trap is of the coalescing (kind of a centrifugal filter that spins the heavier moisture and drains it through an automatic drain) type typically used in many automotive paint spraying applications. If the plasma system is used at medium to high duty cycles, for production use, or is in a climate with extreme humidity, then higher technology steps may need to be taken in order to remove moisture from the air system adequately. A refrigerated air dryer, as its name implies, uses a small refrigeration circuit that cools the compressed air to its dew point. This cool air then more easily displaces the moisture into a coalescing moisture trap with an auto drain. There also are a variety of desiccant filter systems that will adsorb (yes that is spelled correctly!) moisture through a chemical process, drying the air in the system very effectively. I always refer plasma chuting shops that are looking for air drying answers to the same companies that help condition air systems for automotive body and paint shops, as
*Image courtesy of Sharpe Air Systems
the air flow and dryness requirements for paint spraying applications are very similar to plasma cutting needs. Here is a nice schematic of a complete shop plumbing system as found on the Sharpe Air Systems website. It may be a bit overkill for a small plasma cutting operation, however it correctly shows methods of plumbing that include drop, legs for draining the system, shows that the clean dry air is best sourced at the highest points in the plumbing system, as well as showing best locations for filters, regulators and drying equipment.
Determining if your plasma system is receiving adequate inlet pressure and flow from the air system. Every plasma system has input minimum and maximum air or gas flow pressure specifications. Most plasma systems also have a choice of consumable parts for cutting at different amperage levels for different thickness materials. To determine if the plumbing system leading up to the inlet of the plasma is adequate follow these steps: In your plasma system operators’ manual look up the inlet gas pressure range, this will be found in the gas specification section. As an example, the Powermax85 air plasma system specifies a range from 85 to 135 psi air pressure at the inlet.
system so that air is flowing at the torch, set the cutting gas flows or pressures according to the cut charts in the operators’ manual. (Note that the cut gas flow/pressure is not the same as the inlet has flow/pressure). Observe the newly installed gauge at the inlet to the plasma system. You will notice the pressure on this gauge is higher when there is no gas flowing at the torch; this is static pressure and it should be no higher than the maximum pressure specification from your operators manual (Powermax85 maximum is 135 psi). When the air is flowing the gauge reading will drop, this being dynamic pressure. If the gauge drops below the minimum requirement (Powermax85 is 85 psi), then there is a restriction in the plumbing system that will affect operation.
Summary A system with a properly sized gas or air plumbing system will show a minimal pressure drop between static and dynamic pressure as measured right at the inlet to the plasma system. If the drop is excessive, then one of the following is suspect: Hose or pipe inside diameter is too small. Hose or pipe length is too long.
Install a pressure gauge right at the inlet to the plasma system that will accurately measure the proper inlet pressure. Install the largest amperage set of consumables for the plasma system. Example: with a Powermax85 install the 85 amp shielded consumables. Activate the

Maximize Tire Life and Increase Profits with Unique Product from LiQuiTube LiQuiTube is a dependable and durable partner in any preventative maintenance program designed to keep equipment rolling on schedule. This exceptional product combines an ethylene glycol-based solution with natural fibers, artificial fibers, adhesion agents, corrosion inhibitors and other solids. It’s designed to keep the fibers and solids in constant suspension.
Farmers have long searched for a solution to those limbs to avoid downtime and the excessive cost of unneeded repairs. The HyReach Clipper from Precision Manufacturing fixes this problem.
The Seed Right disc eliminates the need to add a drill to the machine shed. Farmers can now plant wheat in 15-inch rows using a Kinze planter with a soybean plate without fear of the small-seeded wheat from leaking out of the plate in each planter row unit. The Seed Right disc was developed by farmer Larry Hak. As a farmer, Hak understood the challenges of adding a small seed crop, like wheat, and cover crops, like turnips and radishes, to the corn and soybean operation. While this type of rotation added more income generating possibilities and increases soil preservation, it typically required the addition of a drill. Now, with the Seed Right seed plates, farmers can use their Kinze planters to plant wheat. Seed Right also offers the producer more control over seed placement. According to Hak, "Planting wheat with a Kinze planter in 15-inch rows gives you, the producer, more control of seed spacing and seed depth than with a drill. Plants emerge faster and have less competition between sunlight and moisture."
For more information about Seed Right, call 419-749-4012 or visit www.seed-right.com.
There is no settling of the solids and fibers – no mixing, stirring or other preparation is necessary. The product remains fluid and has exceptional adhesion properties, providing constant protection for all parts of the tire. LiQuiTube allows you to maximize tire life while reducing fuel consumption and related downtime expenses. These facts of improved economy of operation make a preventative maintenance product that you can’t afford to be without. A8

The HyReach Clipper trims limbs and cuts at ground level to create a clear path around the edge of the field. Without the HyReach Clipper, farmers either have to lose up to 15 feet of production on the edges of their fields, or they have to risk damage to their equipment but planting close to those limbs. The HyReach Tree Clipper eliminates both of these risks. Precision Manufacturing also offers a solution for unwanted trees, the Tree Puller. Simply attach the puller to the tree using its two rows of steel teeth, give it a pull, and the entire tree, stump and roots included is removed. The Tree Puller can also be used to simplify land management. "We've also seen farmers use the tree puller to move large rocks or fence posts," stated a Precision Manufacturing spokesperson. With these two products, Precision Manufacturing provides farmers with a way to deal with unwanted trees, without damage to their equipment. The Kelly Diamond Disc chain harrow is a stubble management tool. It works to prepare the seed bed, control weeds and shallow tillage. It also helps with herbicide and manure incorporation, seed incorporation, leveling and surface drying and warming. Kelly Harrows will be offering chain harrows in sizes from 30 feet to 60 feet. These work well for soybean, corn and wheat stubble.
Poly Tech Adds New Replacement Parts to Their Catalog
STOP-FYRE Provides Reliable, Guaranteed Fire Protection
In their ongoing efforts to provide better services to their customers, Poly Tech Industries has added new replacement parts to their catalog for grain augers and peanut combines. Since 1975, the company has helped farmers make the most out of their equipment with durable poly products, and these additions further that goal.
Any farmer who has reached for a fire extinguisher in the middle of a fire situation, only to find that no longer sprays, understands the need for a fire extinguishing solution that works every time. STOP-FYRE provides reliable, effective fire protection that works every time, guaranteed, without the need for time consuming maintenance.
The additions include new grain tank liner kits for Case IH and New Holland augers. For New Holland owners, the new grain kits fit CR 920, CR940, CR960, CR 970, CR 980 and CR8090 models. Case IH owners will find new liners for 7010, 7120, 8120 and 9120 models. When asked about the benefits of these new liners, a company spokesperson said, "We added these because they are quick and easy to install. The poly liner 'floats' under stainless strips. This allows the poly to expand and contract without damage from buckling." The grain tank liners are made from 1/8-inch UHMW poly that is pre-formed to create a tight fit against the grain tank floor.
When asked about the product, a Kelly Diamond Disc spokesperson said, "These harrows are so efficient and versatile, we're certain all farmers will find a place for them. They easily replace the tandem disc, field cultivator and spice harrow." The superior design of Kelly Diamond Disc harrows means consistent shallow tillage at 1.5 to 2 inches. The durable chains fill ruts and level fields at the same time. By rolling down stubble, they cause it to fracture and split, so it weathers better. This also encourages better microbial breakdown. Kelly Diamond Disc harrows have flotation built in to the system. They create no downward force on the chains, so they can transverse any field your tractor can. “If your tractor can cross the field, so can the Kelly Diamond Harrow," said a company spokesperson. For more information, visit www.kellyharrows.com or call 800-929-2851. NOVE M B ER 2013
In addition, Poly Tech has added a new Amadas peanut combine header band. The new band fits pull-type models 9797, 9897, 9997, 9998, 2100, 2108 and 2110. The company has also added a band for self-propelled models 9965, 9865, 9900 and 9960. The new peanut combine header band extends finger life and withstands rough terrain, all while being made from poly that is lighter than the metal it replaces and flexible to withstand ongoing use. To pick up these parts, contact Poly Tech Industries, Inc., visit www.polyskid.com or call them at 800-5427659.
As the official fire extinguishing method of the National Tractor Pullers Association's track officials, STOP-FYRE has proven to be an effective means to stop fires quickly on agricultural equipment, and without costly damage to the engine or other machinery. Earl Wiseman, a tech and track official for the NTPA, says, "I've used foam and it leaves residue that can destroy the motor. Pullers have an extreme amount of money in these vehicles, and we respect that. STOP-FYRE puts the fire out quickly without damaging engines." It's currently the only multishot, clean agent fire extinguisher available. A final benefit of STOP-FYRE is its ability to reach fires in hard-to-reach spots, like inside motors. By stopping fires quickly without additional damage to the equipment, STOP-FYRE helps farmers safe money and lives when dealing with unexpected fires. For more information about STOP-FYRE call 888-6734734 or visit www.ake.com.

Pathways Through Agriculture by Kayla Degner
What Does Agriculture Mean to You?
A
griculture has played a huge role in my life. Honestly, I would not be where I am today without it. When I was a little girl, agriculture meant what my dad and grandpa did everyday. As I grew older, it meant helping my dad feed livestock, planting, harvesting and any other fun jobs my dad could think of! Without really realizing it, agriculture became apart of my everyday life through FFA, 4-H and being on the farm. Now while being at Iowa State University I am able to increase my knowledge and continue to express my passion for the agriculture industry. I am able to learn from great agriculture professors and become active in organizations around campus. I am also able to work for the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Communication office. These opportunities thus far have been great and I cannot wait to see what the future holds. Since growing older agriculture continues and continues to grow in my life. Knowing that I play a role in feeding the world like so many others is truly an amazing feeling. Agriculture may seem like work to many, but it is a desire and a way of life for so many more. I see agriculture in many different ways. It could be visiting the Iowa State Fair and seeing the famous butter cow, meeting other students passionate about agriculture, going to livestock shows, watching livestock auctions, seeing machinery in the field, watching baby calves grow, feeding cattle, selling grain or seeing farming families work together. For everyone it is probably different, but seeing those little things brings joy to our hearts. What does agriculture mean to you? I would love to hear your comments. BACKING PLATE ALLOWS YOU TO PLANT MULTIPLE SEEDS We have found that planting wheat with a KINZE planter in 15" rows gives you, the producer, more control of seed spacing and seed depth than with a drill. Plants will emerge faster and have less competition between sunlight and moisture. By planting in 15" rows approximately 3/4 of the seeds per acre are needed to produce comparable yield as a drill giving you, the producer, more profit per acre at harvest. Yes, weeds and disease are concern in wheat, but with 15" spacer between rows less damage is done during chemical and fertilizer application. Less disease pressure occurs by allowing more air to flow between rows making mildew less of a factor.

Make Sure Your Will Isn't Leaving Your Benefactors 'Shooting in the Dark' for the True Numbers Dear Michael: We’re not part of the great oil rush in North Dakota, but my father has a will he hasn’t looked at for the past ten years. He told me not to worry about the future because I’ll be able to buy the land – under the will’s directions – for seventy percent of the market value – and with that I should be happy. I have three other siblings and without having a number to shoot at, it’s hard to know what to do for certain. What’s your opinion? – Shooting In The Dark

Dear Shooting in the Dark: I’m afraid your situation is a lot like other people in your generation’s situation. Over eighty percent of the people out there have either no wills or outdated wills. One of the most common ones I see these days are wills like your father’s will – an option to buy based on a percentage of the value of the property. This will comes in two versions: Version one is ‘you are allowed to buy the property of the other children’s share based on seventy percent of the market value’. Version two is ‘you are allowed to buy the land at seventy percent of it’s market value’. Under version one, you being one of four siblings, would receive twenty-five percent share of the land and have to pay seventy percent of the other siblings share or seventyfive percent of the value. Under version two, you have to pay seventy percent of the total value to your siblings and the thirty percent differential is considered to be your inheritance. As you can see, version one is highly preferable to version two as you only pay seventy percent of the seventy-five percent. Under version two, Poppa already thought you were getting your inheritance by getting thirty percent off the top and only paying seventy percent of the entire market value.

As bad as all of that sounds – and it is – the worse news is Poppa might think he has version number one, but when the attorney, back in the day, wrote it up used the language from version number two. Either this was a mistake or if land value were only two or three hundred dollars, the differential wasn’t that big of a deal. In many, many cases when I talk to people and ask them what they have in their will – before I even read what’s in the will – and then read aloud to them what’s actually in the will, about fifty percent or more suddenly get this horrified look on their face and say ‘That’s not what I meant to say.
8 0 0 - 6 2 2 - 8 8 3 6 | The S O U T H E R N FAR M a n d LI V E STO C K DI R E CTO RY |
My boy will never survive having to pay seventy percent of the entire market value’. I could have made them feel better by saying ‘Your boy wouldn’t survive even if you did have the ‘right’ version and he only had to buy land at seventy percent of the seventyfive percent value’ but I usually don’t. Going down the tubes one way versus another way is still going down the tubes. If you do the math seventy percent of seventy-five percent is still over fifty percent of the ‘market value’ of the land. And who defines market value? An appraiser? Doesn’t say appraised value. County average? It doesn’t say county average – it says market value. Therefore the only true way to find market value is whatever the market will bear and that’s typically done by an auctioneer. I haven’t heard of any land auctions going ‘lower’ than ‘market value’ for going on close to fifteen years now, and some have been in the one hundred fifty to two hundred percent of ‘market value’ – depending on who shows up at the auction. Now, this option to purchase – based on the death of your parents – usually occurs when you are in your fifties or sixties – so it kind of comes at a very bad time for you to consider taking on twenty to thirty year mortgages. Sure, interest rates are good now, but somewhere in those years, rates are going to rise. You need to sit down and have a serious heart to heart with Poppa and tell him to visit someone who can quantify these numbers in black and white for him so he can see the net effect of his will. It’s hard for you to talk to your parents about these things because families just don’t do that well. That’s why it’s easier to bring someone in who can run the real numbers and show better options than sitting around waiting for your turn down the tubes. And, yes, that is a selfish promo for myself, but whoever it is, get it done now. ________________________________________ Do you have questions about estate planning? It didn’t start with the Oreo Who doesn’t like a cookie every now and then? Cookies have a long history, but the first ones didn’t taste much like the treats we enjoy today. According to some sources, the first cookies were made in Rome around the third century B.C. They were thin, hard, bland wafers that were twice baked, and the Romans ate them by dipping them in wine. Modern cookies may have originated in Persia during the seventh century, when sugar became more common in that region. They became popular across Europe in the 14th century, enjoyed by royalty and peasants alike. One reason for their appeal was that they traveled well in tins and boxes, making them a reliable source of food on trips. The word “cookie” comes from the Dutch “koekje,” for “little cake.” Cookies arrived in America in the 17th century, in the form of macaroons, gingerbread cookies, and the “jumble,” a hard cookie that combined nuts, sweeteners, and water. The cookies we’re most familiar with, made by creaming butter and sugar, became common in the 18th century.

FARM and RANCH LIFE
By Dr. Michael R. Rosmann
Stress Becomes More Troubling as Farmers Age Last week a young farm wife asked me how to help her husband who she said is unfairly overworked by his parents in their family farm operation. Earlier, two women requested assistance for their farming husbands who are struggling with stresses they could manage satisfactorily when they were younger.
Many farmers have more difficulty handling highly technical farm jobs as they age. As my father approached
A 69 year old farm man called this week to say he doesn’t know how he will take care of his 120 head cow/calf operation and farm 400 acres next year. He could handle his farm with little additional assistance previously but now finds himself overwhelmed and increasingly unhappy.
Dad died at age 72 from a coronary blockage. I still needed his advice at that point.
There is a common denominator among these situations: an aging farmer who can’t handle stressful work as well as when younger. It comes as no surprise that as we age we usually become less able to handle stress. National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health researchers, John Myers, Larry Layne and Suzanne Marsh, reported that both fatal injuries and the severity of nonfatal injuries increase among farmers as they age. Their report was presented at the 2007 Conference on the Aging Farm Community, held in Indianapolis, and is available in the March 2009 issue of the American Journal of Industrial Medicine. I also gave a report at that conference indicating that behavioral health problems increase among aging farmers. The National Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries in 2012, released on August 22 this year, indicates that although fatal work injuries are down among farmers since 2011, the rate of fatal injuries is higher among farmers than among any other occupational group. Stress has a lot to do with their fatalities and injuries.
his early 70s he asked his sons who farmed to take over planting and harvesting, jobs which involve remaining attentive for hours on end. Dad said the monitors on the planter equipment and the combine made him nervous.
I didn’t fully grasp my father’s assessment of his mounting difficulties until I reached my mid 60s. I can’t as easily endure jobs that require sustained attention as long or as easily as I did formerly. The young wife mentioned above thanked me for my perspective. I had suggested that her husband was being urged to take over tasks his parents couldn’t handle anymore, for the same reasons my father couldn’t handle them. She said problems will continue but she doesn’t want to cause a rift by bringing up concerns to her husband or his parents. Her husband is overworking and becoming stressed. Is this right?
take on essential responsibilities which they feel they can handle. The parents know their children want to modify the farming operation; they are willing to give them opportunities to explore new methods of farming. The parents are willing to offer advice and financial investment, but the next generation must take over the planning and implementation of the operation. The farmer with the cow/calf operation and 400 acres of cropland is turning over his operation to his son and granddaughter. Although they have some wrinkles to work out, their approach is reasonable and will give direction and opportunity to the parents and the children taking over.
Not all farmers handle stress the same and some aging farmers actually manage better with a lot of responsibilities than when younger. They rely on the wisdom they have gained through experience. Dr. Arthur Benton, a great contributor to the field of neuropsychology, said at age 94 in his keynote address at a meeting I attended years ago, “Getting old sucks. But there is one benefit about aging; we become more adept as we age at determining what is important.” Good observation!
Taking on more than one can comfortably handle is not necessarily the solution, even if the younger persons

in the operation decide that addressing what they feel are unfair expectations by the older generation is not something they want to pursue.
Dr. Michael R. Rosmann brings the perspective of a farmer in “Farm And Ranch Life”. Dr. Rosmann grew up on a mixed grain and livestock farm in Western Iowa where he experienced enjoyable hard work and 4-H, and witnessed the stresses that accompany farming and farm life.
Bottling up mounting resentments will likely make the young wife and her husband unhappier, which she acknowledged. Their children will likely copy their parents’ example when they assume positions of responsibility, whether engaged in farming or other careers. They will probably overwork as adults.
Dr. Rosmann developed the first mental health response in Iowa to the Farm Crisis of the 1980s. In 2001, Dr. Rosmann, along with partners in seven states, founded the nonprofit network, AgriWellness Inc. AgriWellness conducted research and provided counseling services to farm people. It became clearer that a specialized field – agricultural behavioral health – was needed to respond to the unique problems experienced by farmers, ranchers and others involved in agriculture. Email Dr. Rosmann at mike@agriwellness.org, or visit his website at www. agbehavioralhealth.com. You can call him at his office in Harlan, Iowa at 712-235-6100.
The issue needs to be addressed in open business-like discussion among those involved when one or more persons in a joint operation are overworking. The two farm women, mentioned at the outset whose husbands can’t handle as much stress as when younger, initiated family discussions with an external consultant.

PENNYWISE Another Tool in the Fine Art of Money Management By Paula Vogelgesang Email: Pennywise at pennywise@gwtc.net.
As We Gather Together A chilly breeze ruffles the leaves on the oak trees and the cicadas are singing their last songs as I write this on a late September afternoon. It's a little early to be ‘talking turkey’, but in the real world, there are magazine deadlines to be met. And today, the deadline for the November Edition of the Farm And Livestock Directory is staring me right in the face! I spent some time this morning harvesting the parsley, basil and oregano that managed to survive the many hailstorms of this past summer. The pantry shelves are filling with various ‘tomato stuff’: pasta sauce made with garlic, parsley, oregano and basil grown in my garden, salsa, picante sauce and chili fixings (diced tomatoes with garlic, onions and chopped green peppers). The apples are beginning to fall from the trees and will need picking in a few more days, after which they will be made into pie filling for crisps and pies. I’ll also chop apples and freeze them in bags for apple breads, muffins, cobblers and tarts.
That's not going to happen. I have plans to renovate the chicken house and put in a high fence (with a wire lid on it) so hawks and others critters can’t pick them up from above. I will also be sure to use a wire mesh underfoot so the coyotes and skunks can’t dig under the fence. As I harvest the last of the garden crops, I’m reminded of what an old timer told me years ago: ”Be thankful for what you have; there will be less before there is more!” My pumpkin crop was a total failure this year. Not a single pumpkin grew, thanks to the hail storms. But there is always next year to try again – hope springs eternal here in ranch country. I try to remember that when we have summers like the one that just passed by. Lots of ‘ice from the sky’ and scorching temperatures that cooked the life out of the pastures.
About half of each of the apples has to be discarded due to holes from the many damaging hail storms that wiped out a good two-thirds of the crop. But oh, how my chickens LOVE the remains! The chickens are my little recyclers of all things kitchen scrap. My biddies would love to be outside roaming around free range, but the coyote chorus that plays over the hillsides for most of the day and all of the night keeps them locked up inside a very large barn with a deep straw mulch. Coyotes dearly love a fresh chicken to snack on, but I firmly object to the loss of my laying hens. And, judging from the smell lingering around the barn, there are also several skunktype critters hanging around thinking perhaps one of these days, the girls will be turned out and they too can snack on fresh chicken.
I will be blessed with some pumpkins from a neighbor. I'll cut a few cornstalks from a field to put in an old tub by my front door as a reminder of the ‘blessings of harvest’. A friend of mine who was raised in the country but is now a city dweller decorates her windowsills with jars of produce canned from her garden as a way of saying, "Thanks for the good things of life". One of the highlights of this time of year is the gathering of family to celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday with the pleasures of home and hearth. Those who live some distance away come home for the holiday to share memories of the past, and to make new ones. Babies are cuddled, fussed over and passed from hand to hand. Older children are exclaimed over, "My, how much you have grown!" as they renew acquaintances with aunts, uncles and cousins they see only every few years. If it is a fine fall day, many hours are spent climbing haystacks, riding horseback, playing tag and hide and seek in the crisp air. Such is life in the country, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything! May your turkey be plump, your cranberries merry and your pumpkin pie, just the way you like it! (I’ll take mine with whipped cream.) Till Next Month, Paula —————————————————————————————— If you have tips or ideas to share, send them to Pennywise, Box 518, Kadoka, SD 57543 or better yet, email Pennywise at pennywise@gwtc.net. Please be sure to mention the "Farm And Livestock Directory" when you respond.
Uses For Vinegar, How to Make Hot Pack for Sports Injury and Cheap Picture/Poster Hanging Ideas MORE USES FOR VINEGAR! As a Smell Remover: To take ‘animal smell’ from pigs, cattle, goats, sheep simply put 1 cup of white vinegar in the wash water and wash as usual. This takes out most of the smell and is much cheaper than any other method I’ve found. –tip submitted by AC, SD
Fruit Soak: To make a soak for fresh fruit, mix 1 gallon of water with 1 cup of vinegar, stir well and dump in your fresh fruit: grapes, peaches, plums, strawberries, whatever you have, and let them soak for at least 10 minutes and drain well. The solution will clean any crud off of the fruit and keep the mold spores from growing for several days. Store in bags in the fridge with a paper towel inside to absorb any moisture. –tip submitted by KVA, NM
Grout Cleaner: Mix in a large container the following: 7 cups of water ½ cup baking soda 1/3 cup of lemon juice ¼ cup vinegar (white) Put in a spray bottle; spray the cruddy grout and let it set a few minutes. Scrub with a stiff bristled brush and rinse clean. –tip submitted by ST, NE
Iced Over Windshield Clear: Spray ‘iced over windows on the car or other vehicles with 2/3 cup of vinegar mixed A14
with 1/3 cup of water. The ice will melt right away. –tip submitted by KVA, NM
Microwave Cleaner: Put 3 parts water and 1 part vinegar in a cup and microwave for exactly 4 minutes. Remove the cup and wipe down the microwave with paper towels or clean terry cloth rags. It will be sparkling clean with no work! –tip submitted by Mona Stain Remover: 1 teaspoon blue dish soap (Dawn) 3 – 4 Tablespoons peroxide 2 Tablespoons baking soda Make into a paste in a small container. Dip an old toothbrush or other stiff bristled brush into the past and then scrub away. Rinse well and the stain should be gone! –tip submitted by ST, NE
VINEGAR WARNING: I just wanted to warn your readers that brown vinegar will leave a stain on porous materials while the white vinegar leaves no stain. –tip submitted by KG, NE
This will stay hot for a long time; consider wrapping it in a small towel to prevent accidental burning, especially with the younger children who may not realize they are being scorched right away. –tip submitted by AB, MT
CHEAP PICTURE HANGERS Did you know that you can use a broken sewing machine needle as a picture hanger? They are much sturdier than many found in commercial stores and will hold fairly heavy items. –tip submitted by LW, SD
EDIBLE BIRTHDAY CANDLE HOLDERS Buy a couple of packages of those round colored candies called 'Lifesavers' and fit the little birthday candles in the hole, then place on the cake. Cheaper than the plastic ones, and the kids can eat the candy at the end of the cake! –tip submitted by GF, IA
POSTER HANGERS FOR CHEAP
Since it’s sports season for most middle and high schools and colleges, this one hint seems appropriate:
If you have teens or 'tweens' that love posters and have to plaster their walls with these things, ask places like movie theaters or even the fast food places if you can have their old posters. Most of the time, they will just give them to you because they are going to the trash anyway.
If you need a hot pack, invest in a bag of salt. I bought mine at the supermarket for under $2 for a 5 pound bag. Pour the salt into a cut-down pillowcase or other closely woven fabric and sew the end shut. The resulting pack can then be heated in the microwave for two minutes per side, for a total of 4 minutes.
To hang them, put a dab of toothpaste (yes, I said toothpaste!) on each corner and stick them on the wall. The toothpaste dries and holds the picture/posters in place. When they come down, all you need to do is wash the wall and you are good to go – no repainting or holes to patch! –tip submitted by MU, ND

Children and business travel will mix — with this advice When working parents travel, they don’t always leave their children behind. You can sometimes take your kids along on business trips if you make the right preparations. Before you start packing, think the trip through with these points in mind:
• Examine your motives. Don’t drag your child halfway across the country just because you feel guilty about leaving. Focus on how the experience will benefit you and your child, not on making yourself feel better.
• Pick the right kind of trip. A high-pressure trip where you’ll be working 16-plus hours a day may become even more exhausting with a child or two in tow. Bring your kids to events where you’ll have the flexibility to work and also take time off to be with your young companions. • Bring another adult. If your spouse can come along, so much the better. But set up a plan so everyone knows what’s expected and neither parent feels dumped on during the trip. • Choose a child-friendly hotel. Many hotels have concierges who provide information on child-related events and frequently provide babysitting services. Call around to find one that best suits your needs.

He’s a guy who did everything right all the time.” Passenger: “Come on, nobody’s perfect.” Cabbie: “Frank Feldman was. He was a terrific athlete. He could have won the Grand Slam at tennis. He could golf with the pros. He sang like an opera baritone and danced like a Broadway star, and you should have heard him play the piano. He was an amazing guy.” Passenger: “Sounds like he was something really special.” Cabbie: “Oh, yeah. He had a memory like a computer. He remembered everybody’s birthday. He knew all about wine, which foods to order, and which fork to eat them with. He could fix anything. Not like me. I change a fuse, and the whole street blacks out. But Frank Feldman could do everything right. He was the perfect man! He never made a mistake. No one could ever measure up to Frank Feldman.” Passenger: “How did you meet him?” Cabbie: “Oh, I never actually met Frank. He was my wife’s first husband.”

clear clutter, organize your home, & reclaim your life by Barbara Tako — Motivational Speaker and Author
Mental Tools To Clear Your Clutter The heat and humidity have dropped so I no longer break out into a sweat when I do small tasks, yet, I still “sweat it out” when making clutter control decisions. It is hard to separate trash from treasure. Like anyone, I get attached to my stuff. Some are gifts. Some are inherited items. Many are purchases and were described as “on sale” or “a good deal.” Whatever “it” is, it is difficult to toss an item we are attached to. After all, we have acquired it, paid for it, cleaned it, and stored it. How can we let go of stuff we feel tied to? Here are some thoughts I use in my fall clutter control, and they can help you too. They are mental tools to separate myself from my “treasures.” My “treasures” have attached themselves just like the burrs and seeds that attach themselves to my dogs during our fall walks. Some stuff is like that---it manages to cling to us like a burr and hang around in our homes whether or not we really still need it or even like it. Unused items: If I haven’t used something in a year or two, I probably won’t suddenly “need it someday.” At any rate, I ought to trust in the Universe that I will be able to get a similar thing if I do need it later. Another mental exercise I use as I weed out my stuff: I pretend I am suddenly deceased. As a hovering ghost, I get to watch friends and family going through the same stuff I am looking at and remarking, “Why on earth did she save that? What did she think she was keeping this for? What are all these for?” and so on. If I see them shaking their heads at my ghostly explanation or if I hear muffled laughter, then I know I don’t want to keep the item any longer. Gifts: What about “special” gifts from special people? I feel disloyal if I don’t save a gift. Yet, it is the people who are special to me not the gift. When I sort out these gifts, I
change roles. I pretend I am the giver not the receiver. If someone can’t use a gift that I gave him or her, I hope they would decide it was the thought that counted. I would want them to know they are free to send it on to someone who might use it, rather than bury it in the back of their closet. Stuff is us: Next, think about the stuff we let hang around because we feel it defines us. I kept school papers and dated textbooks—as though keeping them somehow proved I really went to school. Do I have stuff from former hobbies so I can remind myself that I really am an interesting person or tell myself that it is still my hobby? Do I hang onto too much outgrown kid stuff so I can definitively say I am a great mom? Ouch. This stuff does not define me. It is time to let it go.
need anymore. If it is no longer beautiful, useful, and/or sentimental, send it on! Ultimately, I use two formulas to keep my head on straight when making clutter control choices: Stuff (does not equal) Person. Person (is greater than) Stuff. We are not the sum total of our possessions. We are bigger than that. I hope I don’t define myself by what I own, and I hope I don’t judge others based on what they own. Finally, my stuff can support me, not the other way around. Use these mental tools to toss the extra stuff, and the guilt, the next time you clear clutter.
Guilt by association: Sometimes I hang onto stuff that makes me feel bad. Maybe it is a hobby I haven’t made time for in years. Or, it is a gift given from someone where our relationship ended badly. Maybe it is clothing that is too small and doesn’t fit. Will keeping a hobby force me to make time for it again? Will an old love letter or a gift from a former friend remind me to be a better person? Can hanging onto small clothing make me lose weight? No. No. No.
Barbara Tako is a clutter clearing motivational speaker and author of "Clutter Clearing Choices: Clear Clutter, Organize Your Home, & Reclaim Your Life" (O Books, 2010), a seasonally organized book of clutter clearing tips that readers can pick and choose from to fit their personal style and needs. Why do we sometimes use stuff to punish ourselves? Don’t keep physical reminders around that have negative associations that make you feel bad or fill you with guilt. If you have items like that hanging around, please choose to pass them on and allow yourself to feel better.
www.clutterclearingchoices.com.
Used to like: Finally, there was stuff that fell into the “things I used to like” category. Some stuff stuck around because I hadn’t figured out it no longer worked for me. I used a rocking chair in a baby room. Then, I put it in the living room. For a while, I liked it there…but it didn’t really belong there. We were past the rocking babies stage of life. People change. I change. Sometimes I can work to be a little quicker to pass on stuff that doesn’t provide what I

Value-Added Grilling Selections Pony Tales
by PONTY:
Whole Hog Barbecue It was start-up time in a newly founded meat marketing venture, when out of the clear blue came this call from the high school superintendent. He asked if I would be willing to teach the VOAG classes until a teacher could be hired. He was in a bit of a panic, as school was about to start in a couple of weeks, and he was without a teacher. First of all, I told him that I didn't have a teacher’s degree, for which he assured me that there would be no problem. Second, there was no way I could walk away from my business without some kind of compensation plan. Again, he assured me that he would provide an office in the school, as well as a part-time high school girl to handle all secretarial duties.
The new “golden age” of barbecuing has been spurred on by a greater selection of new found cuts. Though always an integral part of the carcass, these cuts were never before separated and identified. They’ve not only added net value to the carcass (as much as a $100.00/head) but have provided more versatility and utility to an otherwise under-valued cut-out. We’ve gone from the era of breaking carcasses into primals (marketed as wholesale cuts) to muscle boning (marketed as boxed beef) to the now popular muscle separation (marketed as value-added selections). A combination of improved butchering techniques and marketing magic have generated new, attractively named cuts of meat designed to appeal to flavor and time-conscious cooks. And now these cutting edge cuts — which include the flatiron, the western griller, ranch steak and petite tender, are becoming household names in most butcher shops.
It was a reciprocal arrangement that proved to be a win/win for all involved. Not only were there long lasting relationships that evolved and prestigious honors reciprocated, there was the tangible gleaning of at least one keepsake — a hog cooker.
The new cuts come from the chuck and bottom round, beef mainstays whose popularity has suffered as consumers have become more health conscious as the nation’s demographics and cooking habits have shifted.
This was long before hog cookers were so popular. So when the kids asked for a project that they could do in the shop, I offered to buy all of the material if they would design and build a hog cooker. It remains to this day one of my treasured possessions.
Smaller families and less at home cooking have translated into a shrinking market for bigger, fattier cuts of meat. Instead, consumers want smaller, boneless options they can cook quickly with minimal prep time. Which is why the beef industry funded research in the 1990’s to find new ways to cut and serve large, multi-muscled roasts.
It has been modified and updated over time, but continues to be an actively used piece of equipment. From community functions to family affairs it stays fired-up for most of the summer. There’s a hog cooker on every street comer in today’s world, but none that can compare with the one my boys made in FFA. I’m so proud of those guys, as it has stood the test of time and will be handled down for generations to come. Hog cookers come and go — rusted out, burnt out or worn out — but this one is better than the day it was built. More proof that when quality and workmanship come first, the net result will be that of a product that you can be proud. Pride in your cooking begins with quality meat selection and ends with a quality cooking experience. If either comes up short — you're stuck holding the bag! NOVE M B ER 2013
The technique involves isolating muscles, then cutting them lengthwise, which allows butchers to offer smaller, tenderer cuts of meat just the right size for consumer’s appetites and pocket books. By contrast, the traditional method of meat cutting was less precise, making it nearly impossible to separate more lucrative cuts from less choice ones. It's almost like the European style of cutting where those old butchers know how to do this. In contrast, we in America have been stuck in this cross-cut large family thing, here we focused on larger pieces of meat. As we turn our focus to these newest value-added cuts, the Teres Major muscle probably gets the most attention. It’s the cream of the new crop of steaks, known as the petite tender or shoulder tender. It’s actually an extension of the
By 1999 the investment paid off. Researchers at the University of Nebraska and University of Florida had developed a new butchering methodology based on a technique called muscle profiling.
tenderloin, but was lost in the muscle configuration of the chuck. It is extremely small (a pound or less), but is a part of the most tender muscle in the carcass. Likewise the flatiron is a pretty small cut, and also comes from the chuck, as does the ranch steak. Meat experts have known about these chuck benefits for as long as I can remember, and have selectively known how to capture these premium cuts at heavily discounted prices. The western griller comes from the bottom round, and is somewhat deceptively mislabeled. Though it is the most symmetrical, attractive muscle, it is also the least tender. So, purchase this steak, knowing full well that it has to be tenderized. For most of these new found steaks, tenderness will be an issue, but remember they’re much less expensive than the middle cut steaks. They also pack as much , or more, flavor — just simply cut more thinly across the grain. These new steaks are actually the product of necessity in these lean times. They give you an alternative to the more popular, more expensive cuts — meaning you can still afford to throw a backyard party. In the old days, say about this time of the year, it wasn’t so hard to throw a bang-up backyard barbeque. You just had to pick up some nice thick 28 day-aged prime New York strip steaks — light a fire, grill to medium rare, and listen to your guests stomp and cheer. Cheap steaks don’t make you out a cheapskate. It’s all about seeking out overlooked values and making the most of them. Just as necessity is the mother of invention, so it is that meat selection is the key to maintaining the status quo without breaking the bank. In tough times the less tender get going!

Essays From My Farmhouse Kitchen
Take a visual approach to solving problems Wrestling with a problem isn’t always the best way to generate a creative solution. A better approach is often to step back and quietly visualize the answer you’re looking for. Follow these steps:
By Renae B. Vander Schaff
• Focus on what you want. This sounds easy, but keeping your mind free of obstacles and distractions can be difficult. Try to clear your thoughts of everything but the outcome you need. Don’t fight negative thoughts—just let them flow out of your brain so you can concentrate on the positive.
It's an Apple Year Last year there was a dearth of apples throughout the land due to a warm early spring, and one night of cold temperatures. Any apples on the trees were closely guarded for use in a few pans of applesauce. This year is the complete opposite! Apples are abundant. Any tree that has tried to hide amongst other trees in the grove can not conceal its identity any longer. For here, there and everywhere apples are turning red, green and yellow, or yellow with red streaks depending on the variety planted. Years back we had fun looking through the catalogs reading about this apple variety and that one. My farmer had his likes and I had mine. We both wanted to try unknown varieties that had mouth watering descriptions. So we started planting apple trees to begin with an early harvest in July continuing all the way through October. Apples are a very healthy food and so versatile, so we thought we should plant lots. As we waited for these trees to arrive at bearing age, our impatient appetites told us one can never have enough apple trees, so we planted another row. Then, during one year of drought when apples trees looked as though they were the only crop we'd have, we planted even more. This year when every apple tree in the county is producing, we still are grateful to have apples, remembering years of scarcity. The recipe file is searched for ways to use apples. If an apple day keeps the doctor away, then bring on the apple cakes, brownies, caramel apples, and all the salads that include apples and candy bars. Apples are even good just fresh off the tree! Trees that are ready for harvest don't want to wait long when the heat is turned up. Box after box of apples find their way to the house, turning my kitchen into an applery. Where we commence to cooking up kettles of applesauce, baking and freezing apple pies, canning and selling apples at the farmer's market.
The cider press gets a workout when the supply of boxes is full. Each batch has its own flavor. It helps to have boys who don't mind building up those arm muscles! The Dolga crabapple seems to always ripen around Labor Day. So that Monday is reserved for canning. The girls picked only a bushel or two of apples that morning. It didn't produce the eighty quarts like it did in 2007—hurray, no complaints here! The Dolga, such a hard little red, almost black apple. It's aromatic fragrance is a delight. A distinct perfume scent of its own, that commands that sense of smell to say what's this!
• Make a movie in your mind. We tend to see things in pictures more strongly than we can visualize abstract concepts like numbers and theories. Think of your problem in visual terms and try looking at it—and your solutions—from different angles. Bring your senses into play: Imagine what your idea would feel like, sound like, or even smell like. • Take your time. The solution may not come all at once. Give yourself time to get used to the process so you’re not forcing ideas too hard. With practice, you’ll learn how to quickly relax your mind and let it explore problems and situations without effort.
Those apples were small this year, but as always big on flavor. A flavor that is puckery tart, not sweet. Most of the apples were canned with stem intact, only the blossom flower removed. The sugar syrup turns a pinkish red during the canning process, leaving a jar of tempting fruit for dessert when the trees stand bare and empty. The remaining apples are placed in the steam juicer which extracts the red liquid. It gives the kitchen an intoxicating smell. The girls spent an afternoon making one of the best, prettiest jellies ever. The flavor and fragrance brings back the taste of summer anytime a jar is open. It's tart flavor wakes up any taste buds on those cold, cloudy wintry days. Hope is renewed that winter is just for a season. ———————————————————— Renae B.
