few months ago, I moved into a new house (new to me, anyways) and the kitchen is four times as big as my old kitchen, with all new (actually new) appliances. The first weekend I lived here, my friends and I cooked a brunch feast that would not have been possible in my old kitchen, and it was the most delicious housewarming a girl could ask for. Our kitchens really are the hearts of our homes, and anyone who’s ever hosted a party where all the guests somehow ended up crowding around the kitchen island knows what I mean. As the most practical and busiest room in the house, kitchens often receive the most attention when it comes to updating and remodeling. Bathrooms, too, are often on the renovation wish list. In this issue of FIX, you’ll find the stories of four families that are enjoying their reimagined kitchens and baths, and hopefully you’ll find some inspiration for your own projects. In the following pages, you can get a good start
on the autumn season, with a comfort food recipe and creative ways to decorate for your fall dinner party. Don’t forget the garden contest! As promised, we announce the winning garden in this issue. As the summer of 2013 comes to a close, it’s hard to believe that I’ve been working with hospitable Mid-South homeowners, talented professionals, and the FIX team at the Commercial Appeal for two and a half years. Right on time with the changing seasons, I’ll also be making a change, so this will be my last issue as Editor of FIX magazine. It’s been a rewarding experience to meet so many people who are passionate about their living spaces and the friends and family they share those spaces with. I’m going to miss the exciting before-and-after transformations, the decorating ideas, and strolling through the gorgeous gardens of our readers, but I know FIX will continue to be a great resource for Mid-Southerners. I’m excited to see what happens next!

homeowner remarks. “As you’re sitting in the house, your eyes are drawn to the
open floor plan.” With the kitchen now completely open to the hearth room and dining room, the space is hardly recognizable. The renovation team removed all of the tile flooring and replaced it with hardwood floors, which they feathered into the existing hardwood. Then they sanded and refinished the floors in a light stain. Caviness moved the old kitchen cabinets to be repurposed in the garage, and installed new white cabinets and all new appliances. The large island, which matches the cabinets, is topped with a substantial marble block and a divided sink. The homeowner chose the barstools specifically from Restoration Hardware to preserve the clean lines of the space. “I could have a cooking show behind this island,” she laughs. Ceiling details complement the simplicity of the rest of the room. The homeowner had a vision of rustic 200-year old beams in the ceiling, and Caviness was able to deliver. It was essential to keep the ceiling medallion, which the owners had painted after they moved in. However, when it came time to integrate the dining room into the new plan, the ceilings were different heights. Caviness and his team worked to carefully remove the medallion and reinstall it; the homeowner found a new artisan light fixture from Palladio Antiques, and the dining area came together beautifully. While one homeowner’s tastes are more modern and contemporary, her husband’s tastes lean toward to more traditional style. “We picked and chose the best ideas that each of us had, and worked to a consensus. After 25 years of marriage, you learn how to do that,” he laughs. The result is a bright, uncluttered space that allows the natural light to reflect from the off-white walls, light wood floors, and white cabinets and island. After the 24

their lighting, storage, and layout problems. “We began the design with the Veazeys providing me concept pictures,” Moore recalls. “Then we designed a kitchen layout that worked for them.” They came up with a major plan for a successful remodel, including removing part of a wall, plentiful lighting, and installing a spacious, two-tiered granite island. Removing the wall and cramped doors from the corner of the room immediately opened up the space, and adding upper and lower cabinets and a pantry closet on the once-empty wall practically doubled the amount of available storage in the kitchen. New, white cabinets reach up to the ceiling, giving the couple plenty of room. “When we moved in here a year ago, we couldn’t store anything,” Diana says. “And now, I even have some empty cabinets.” At 30 inches deep, the refrigerator (one of the few things that the Veazeys brought from their previous home) is deeper than the counters, so the builders extended the upper cabinet to
cabinet tape lights. “Pam showed me that

Is your financial life secure? At Chartwell Financial Group, we have developed a unique ability which enables our advisors to consistently guide our clients through a process of systematic wealth building and acquiring financial security. We call this process Realized Wealth. We plan for the expected and unexpected events in a person’s life. Financial disorganization is what most people encounter. Our first step is to get you Financially Organized. We use a tool called the Living Balance Sheet. From this tool, we can aggregate and organize the client’s financial world and take them through our long term planning process. If something happened to you today would your family be secure financially for the rest of their lives? We don’t know when our time is up, the last thing we want to do is leave our family with a stack of bills, mortgage, etc. Realizing your human life value before that day comes we can put the pieces in place so in case it’s sooner than later your family financially can lead a stronger financial life and ensure thru wills and trust your legacy will be followed as you want it to be. What is the biggest financial issue causing you stress today? Whether it’s not enough income, debit, tax issues, losing money in the market, etc., everyone has a dif-
ferent financial picture. It’s our job to ease the stress you are experiencing by eliminating risk factors and by working together getting you organized and move forward getting you to the stress free path. How do you view Retirement? Will you have enough money is the first thought. the project, and since they had also seen his work at last year’s VESTA Home Show, they decided that Moore would be the one to help them transform their drab space into the sunlit oasis that it is today. The homeowner had some specific ideas about the style and materials she preferred. “They were looking for a very clean-lined style bathroom. We wanted to use subway tile, a free standing soaking tub, and chrome lighting,” Moore says.“I knew that I wanted mostly marble, and that I wanted modern or contemporary fixtures,” the homeowner explains. “I love the modern look, but we didn’t go overboard because the rest of the house is very traditional.” The marble on the sink countertop is an understated and very clean Turkish White Carrera pattern, while the marble tiles on the walls surrounding the tub and in the shower are a White Sanctuary pattern. Moore kept the cabinets, but with a coat of white paint and rectangular chrome hardware, they look brand-new. The almostmustard walls are now a light, warm gray that seems to bask in the natural light flowing in from the stained glass window, which both grounds the room to the more traditional feel of the overall house,

tanley Steemer has cleaned area rugs in customers’ homes for years. In our constant search for better ways to service our customers, we now utilize a “submersion” cleaning process. This is the same process that the makers of area rugs in Persia and throughout Asia use to flush the rugs of dirt and excess dyes before shipping them to market. The process involves complete submersion of your area rug and gentle cleaning which flushes the fibers. This process is manually intensive and time consuming, but it allows us to remove the most dirt and contaminants from the rug. When it comes to area rugs, don’t settle for anything less than a professional rug cleaning. Why?

• Because we can give you a more thorough cleaning process that can remove the dirt that lodges inside the foundation yarns of an area rug. • It’s also the best process to remove the odor caused by pet ‘accidents’ and other contaminants • We have a safer cleaning process that involves thorough testing of the chemicals we use overnight to guard against the colors bleeding in your rug. • With our process, we have a much faster drying time that helps protect against browning and we will hand groom and clean the fringe to bring back the original beauty of your rug. A combination of formal boxwoods and tropical plants make a unique setting for a recent project by Above All Custom Pool and Landscape. “When we’re designing, we try to create small areas for annuals or tropicals” Dawkins explains. “You don’t want to have to go in and redo all your landscaping every year, so you can add in a couple of pockets that can be switched out seasonally.” The solid copper fountains flowing into the pool reflect the homeowner’s desire for artistic and architectural details. “No matter where you are in the space, there’s a water feature as a focal point,” Dawkins points out. “The symmetry of the fountains on one side and the spa spilling over on the other side, that really enhances the space.”

it’s time to plant fall and winter vegetables Nothing beats the taste and nutrition of home-grown veggies like broccoli, lettuce, or spinach.
Broccoli For the Mid-
South’s warmer climate, a fall planting for broccoli is best because this crop thrives in cooler weather. Plant seeds 1 inch deep, 3 inches apart; thin seedlings to one plant every 12 to 24 inches. Peas Any of the three
main varieties of peas, snow peas, sweet peas, or snap peas, will handle cold weather well when planted in the early fall. Plant 1 inch deep and 2 inches apart.
Beets Root vegetables that
grow quickly and can handle cooler temperatures, beets are a great long-season crop. Plant seeds 1/2 inch deep and 1-2 inches apart in moist soil. They can be planted until September.
Lettuce Fresh, homegrown lettuce tastes better and has more vitamins that the usual supermarket lettuce. Plant small crops every few weeks in cool soil.

Embrace the junk drawer
There’s a reason everyone has a junk drawer! Having one drawer set aside for things that don’t have a home elsewhere is the best way to organize odds and ends that you’ll inevitably end up needing. Use drawer dividers so you can see the contents of the drawer, and go through every few months to toss anything you haven’t used in a while and remove any items that actually do have a place elsewhere in the home.
Turn and store Install a large
lazy Susan in a corner cabinet, which is perfect for storing small appliances like coffee grinders or waffle makers. Large mixing bowls, plastic containers, and some large serving pieces can also find a convenient home in the lazy Susan.
Use door interiors The back
side of a pantry or cabinet door can be a valuable storage space in the kitchen. Attach a sheet of cork to create a bulletin board and hide that pinned-up paper clutter, or apply a magnetic sheet that comes with small jars to store spices or odds and ends. Stick-on hooks or small plastic baskets can be used to corral plastic grocery bags, hang large utensils, keep pantry items at your fingertips.

Give your yard the attention it needs to look this healthy.
Group pantry items Think about
how you use the items in your pantry, and group food and supplies that you use at the same time together. For example, cereals and granola bars, can form a “breakfast” group; flour, sugar, and chocolate chips can be stored together as the “baking” group, and kids’ snacks can share an area. Put the items in these groups in baskets or bins, that way you can just bring the whole basket to your workspace.
Cut the clutter
If you get the feeling your drawers are full of cooking gadgets you “might use one day”, chances are you’re using up valuable storage space. Put all the contents of your utensil drawer into a box. For the next month, anytime you have to go into the box to find a utensil, then return that item to the drawer. Anything left still in the box at the end of the month probably isn’t worth keeping.

f you tire of pumpkins and hay bales, try some of the unique ideas from My Perfect Party designer Anne Canale to elevate your fall decor. Start with a layered foundation of runners and placemats in burlap or other textured fabric in an autumn neutral. Incorporating a few lighter colors, in this case the handmade ceramic dinner and salad plates, can complement the deep colors in the rest of the decor. The showstopper here is the use of real fruit and vegetables in the lush centerpiece. Artichokes are an unexpected way to add texture and appetite to the table, along with red apples, Bosc and Red Anjou pears 60

(chosen for their colors), a winter squash, and magnolia leaves. Pink berries, twigs, and pheasant feathers bring in even more visual interest and texture. Anne cleverly used additional artichokes and pears in the candlesticks as well. For each table setting, use cut wood as coasters and wire pumpkin place card holders for a charming rustic look. A striped napkin tied with twine and berries brings out the green in the centerpiece, and an adorable matchbook can serve as favors for your guests. These creative ideas are the perfect way to celebrate fall in an upscale but still festive way. For more ideas on party planning and decor, visit myperfectparty.com s e pte m b e r • o cto b e r 2013

hospitality fix Recipe by Sarah Matheny Gordon
Sweet Potato and Leek Soup
S
avory sweet potato and leek soup is the perfect dish to welcome the warm flavors of fall into your home. This satisfying soup includes simple, inexpensive seasonal ingredients and pantry staples that come together for a delicious and healthy one-dish meal. This recipe is easily doubled or even tripled, as long as you have time to do some extra peeling and chopping. Make extra to freeze ahead for a quick, filling meal this winter, or to share with neighbors or loved ones. It is always a big hit at dinner parties as well, and can be made a day in advance for convenience. The recipe below yields enough to serve 4 adults as an entrée, or 6-8 as an appetizer or side dish.
INGREDIENTs 3 Tablespoons unsalted butter 2 cups chopped leeks**, white and very light green parts only (from 4 to 6 small leeks or 2 to 3 large ones) 3 cloves garlic, minced 2 pounds sweet potatoes, peeled, washed, diced into 1 inch cubes 2 cups high quality chicken broth 2 cups water, divided 1 ½ cups half-and-half 1 teaspoon ground cumin (optional) Salt and ground white pepper For garnish: Chopped chives or minced cilantro Grated parmesan cheese
directions Working over medium-low heat, melt butter in a heavy saucepan or Dutch oven. Add leeks and ½ tsp. salt, and sauté 10 minutes until tender. Add garlic and sauté 2 minutes more until fragrant. Take care not to let the mixture brown. Add sweet potatoes, chicken broth, and 1 cup water. Bring to a simmer for 20-25 minutes, until sweet potatoes are tender. Remove from heat. Using an immersion blender, or working in batches with a traditional blender, blend the mixture until a smooth puree is achieved. (Use care: splatters can cause burns.) Return puree to pan, bring to a gentle simmer. Stir in half-and-half, cumin, ¼ teaspoon white pepper. Stir in 1 cup water (or more as needed to make soup consistency of heavy cream). Taste and adjust salt and white pepper. Serve topped with parmesan and chives or cilantro.
**Note: Leeks are notorious for trapping sand and dirt within their layers of leaves. To remove it, cut base and dark green leaves from leeks. Slice remaining part length wise, then chop into half-moons. Submerge the leaves in a salad spinner and swish around with your fingers so that any trapped sand sinks to the bottom. Drain, spin and repeat until you no longer see any sand in the bottom.
