A Letter from the editors Dear Reader! First of all I would like to thank you for reading our fabulous, brand new, fashion magazine. Last summer we started a fashion blog under the same name, and because we both love online magazines we thought why don’t we start a magazine?! We both go to an English boarding school in Surrey and have just started our GCSE’s. We have a passion for art, fashion, photography and gossip; and we have tried to include exactly what we would want to read in this magazine! In this issue you will find out about the latest trends that you can shop for on the high street, real life stories, new stuff to look out for, a seasonal fashion shoot and what boys really think about what you wear! Everything was made from scratch by us and we hope that you enjoy reading it. Lot’s has happened this month in the fashion world but if you need a place to find it all, it’s here. Each issue is out every alternate month, but to get extra goss’ and info’ immediately visit our blog at fizzlekicks.blogspot.com and keep in touch!! There are many people out there who inspire us, not just celebrities, but people in our family and those who have contributed to the fashion world and made it the thing it is today. Please subscribe and follow our blog and we will keep writing for you! Any ideas just leave a comment because we’re new to this! Sit down, shut up, and get on with the rest of the issue. We need to dash, must get to Latin!! Love forever

FIZZLE KICKS: Coming Soon!

Movies

Coming Soon!

Beastly, 15th April 2011 I first heard about Beastly months ago whilst watching movie trailers on YouTube and ever since I’ve been counting down the days until its release. It is a modern day, more grown-up, takes on the story Beauty and the Beast. Kyle Kingson (played by Wild Child Alex Pettyfer) is arrogant, attractive and popular and takes his fortunes for granted. He is used to teasing others and using his power but one day he crosses Kendra (a spooky Mary-Kate Olsen) by standing her up and making her look like a fool; but this time the joke’s on him. Kendra casts a spell on Kingson turning him beastly. The spell can only be broken when he finds true love, a person who sees him for what’s on the inside. With only a kind housekeeper (Lisa Gay Hamilton) and blind tutor (Neil Patrick Harris famous for the hilarious Barney in How I Met Your Mother) for company things look pretty bleak. One day though he helps a drug addict out of trouble with his drug dealer and in return for this favor asks for his daughter (high school musical’s Venessa Hudgens) to stay with him. Will she be able to see past the flesh that hides his heart?

Books The Boy Next Door, By Meg Cabot

Want a love story to get you in the mood for Valentine’s Day? Meg Cabot, author of the Princess Diaries, pulls out all the stops in ditsy, hilarious and romance novel. It all starts when Mel must care for her elderly neighbors Great Dane and two cats whilst she is in hospital. As she struggles to handle her demanding job as a newspaper columnist and so calls in her neighbor’s nephew to help. We won’t ruin it for you; you’ll have to find out the rest! TV Waterloo Road, Wednesdays 9pm After the disjointedness of the last series (honestly who bothered to catch up with what was happening) it is a relief to have it back again, all new and shiny! A new addition to the gang is George Sampson. I am a little confused as to what he is doing, but after a summer in Street Dance, he is now trying an acting career. Hopefully this series will bring more drama, more tragedy and more hot guys!

Music Pink, Greatest Hits…So Far!!! Okay so it’s not exactly new, but this fabulous greatest hits album includes 2 brand new songs and an extra DVD of music videos and the album cover photo shoot. These songs will bring back deep memories and remind us all of why P!nk is such a great singer. She so honestly sings of the hard times she has had. Don’t delay- go and pick up a copy!

FIZZLE KICKS: Help Me Helen!

Help Me DEAR HELEN

I have had this problem for about 3 weeks really. Recently, I’ve tried to run away 3 times. My grandfather died a few weeks ago, and ever since then, I just haven’t felt the same. I talked to teachers about it, but all they do is put me in counseling, and I hated it, in fact it made me want to leave even more. I go to school in London, and no one at school talks to me. My best friend is my cousin, Jenny. My grandfather was all I had; now I just don’t see the point in living. Jenny told me to write to you, because she told me you would be the only one who would know how to help me.

DEAR HELEN

Shauna, 14

Jenny, 13

I just came to my new school, feeling quite confident about my body, but then everyone told me that I was either ‘chubby’ or just plain fat. I told my mum and she told me that I am fine. What should I do? Who should I listen to?

DEAR HELEN

I only found out a few weeks ago, that all of my friends smoke marijuana. I was with them before class one timeand they offered me some. I said no, but now they refuse to be seen with me or even talk to me- what should I do? Mary Jane, 14

Helen! Dear Mary Jane Dear Shauna I understand it must be hard for you having lost someone and you may feel very alone right now, but try to think about how your grandad would feel if he knew how upset you were and also your family. They have just been through a loss of one of their family members and I’m sure they would all miss you. Counseling isn’t always the way to solve people’s problems. You have to take into account that the death wasn’t your fault running away won’t bring your grandad back. I’m sure he would want you to remember the good things about him when he was alive and not to be sad. Talk to you cousin, maybe she feels the same way and has a better way of dealing with it. Everyone has different coping strategies and running away isn’t going to help anyone and especially not you. You can’t run away from life, or you’ll be running forever. If you are still having problems try talking to the Samaritans. They help people who are having problems like this all the time and they’ll have plenty of good advice for you.

Dear Jenny The most important thing is that you are confident. Everyone is different in one way or another and people who treat you differently for the way you look just aren’t worth talking to. Anyway I’ve heard from a good deal of males out there that they prefer someone with a bit more flesh on them to someone who’s stick thin. You should definitely listen to your mum, if you do feel like you need to lose weight, just start cutting down on a few snacks, but don’t do anything extreme. Crash dieting and excessive dieting is bad for everyone and it’s proven that the average women puts on twice the weight she loses from dieting. I think it’s fantastic that you are quite confident with your body and you shouldn’t let anything or anyone change that. Hope this helps! Helen x

If your friends are refusing to be seen with you because you don’t smoke pot then they aren’t worth it. Marijuana or weed as it is more commonly known can have serious effects on your mental health and is not beneficially to your brain. Yes it can make you feel more relaxed, but it’s also illegal. Your friends are probably going through a rebellious phase when they think they're cool when really they are just being stupid. Wasting their money and causing themselves harm. If you have any concerns about Cannabis then you can look at Frank a company that are trying to educate people about the effects of drugs and alcohol abuse. They may think it helps them have fun, but if your friends can’t just have fun without drugs then your friends are not very interesting people. You should try talking to more sensible, fun and intelligent people. Your friends are just being silly and not looking after themselves and subsequently offering you is also them trying to harm you although they may not realize it yet!

FIZZLE KICKS: Real Life Stories!

‘DRUGS AREN’T COOL- I LEARNT THAT THE HARD WAY’

The HISTORY...

Let me take you back about 5 months ago, it was spring term and I was 13 years old. I was attending an all girls private school in London, it was a good school and I had a great group of friends. After school we would go to Hyde Park and hang out with other school kids, trying to pull some guys. This particular afternoon one of my friends had bought a pack of cigarettes, I was shocked as she handed them round and all my friends took one and lit up. I

was disgusted; I couldn’t believe they were like that! Of course I was just looking out for them but I lectured and nagged about how bad it was and that they would all grow up and get cancer! I wasn’t going to hang out with them if they were smoking so I marched home early and didn’t call them or talk to them for the whole weekend, which was silly because I was just punishing myself. I thought they would come round but as the hours lengthened I knew that I had to choose. I didn’t want to lose my friends and the only way I could see that happening was if I did something really cool! So I decided to pull a few strings and I got my hands on a fake ID. The next day at school I showed it off and everyone practically bowed down to me. I was now buying cigarettes for almost all the under ages in the school! The next month I was 14, and as the park was a bit young for us, we were going to try pubs. With our fake ID’s at the ready we went round all the pubs in the area meeting older guys and mucking around. We were offered a joint (you could smoke inside back then!) by some boys a bit older and when we took it we felt so cool. It felt better than smoking and we didn’t exactly think of weed as a drug. I was failing in school also. I felt like a real rebel then. The hole got DEEPER... Before I knew it was my best friend’s birthday, and she decided we should all go clubbing. We planned our night out weeks in advance. We organized outfits, and fake names and ages, excuses, everything. As we cued up to get in the adrenaline pumped around my body and I nervously looked this way and that. Would the bouncer realize I was just 14?! We got to the door and hey presto the rope was lifted, and we entered. The heat hit me and the music resounded in my bones, I was nervous at first, but after a few margaritas, I was more than confident. This one guy, who had been

watching us all night, came up to my friend and me. He took out some white powder from his pocket and asked if we wanted a pick me up. My friends all said yes so I just went along to the loo with them, I didn’t want to get left out. So there we were snorting coke off the toilet lid. I felt amazing, the best I have ever felt in my life. So this was what all the fuss was about, drugs were brilliant! In the morning I woke up with a splitting headache, moving an inch felt like dragging a ton of bricks for a mile but it was worth it. After that night we met up with the same guy a couple more times and he introduced us to his drug dealer so that we could get the cocaine direct. Somehow I was always the one who went to the drug dealer with my friend’s money to get the cocaine. I wasn’t scared of him because he was a schoolboy just a little older than me and I had already met some of his friends. The more I took it, the more I needed of it. I would buy the coke with the money they gave me but I wouldn’t give them the drugs I had bought with it; that was for me, I gave them my own mix with just a sprinkle of what they should have been getting. I never felt guilty about my actions, this wasn’t stealing, cheating or lyingthis was looking out for my friends. It wouldn’t have been right for me to watch them damage their bodies. The drugs worked differently for me because I was stronger than them. Soon I stopped hanging out with the people who I had first started smoking with and moved onto a completely different bunch of people who were so much cooler.

“THE TOASTER SHATTERED ON HER HEAD, AND I RAN...” As the months passed I had practically left school, and money was running low. When I asked my parents they would say no, I think they knew I had a problem and they confronted me about it. I promised I would stop but how dare they take away my money and freedom, I was a teenager, I needed fun! I got desperate for more soon, if my parents wouldn’t give me money, I would steal it. Money and goods went missing from the house and I grew anxious that m

parents were on to me. One day my mum came downstairs and saw me riffling through her purse. She looked heartbroken when she saw me. I was in debt with my dealer but I needed one more kick, just one more. “You promised you would stop! Put the money back, for goodness sake!” Damn she was going to kill me; I needed this shot first though, so I grabbed the nearest thing to me and threw it! The toaster shattered on her skull, and I ran. The EPIPHANY... After that I was banned from the house and my family refused contact with me. I had a little brother; he still doesn’t talk to me now. I went from friend’s house to friend’s house, getting kicked out by their parents again and again, and stealing and sneaking to get more coke. I was on the last friendly place in my address book when I was confronted. “If you want to stay here any longer, then you have to stop. My parents say that the next thing you do your out! I’m sorry, but you’ve changed so much. You’re moody and hang out with the cool people and the drug dealers; I don’t even know who you are!” I will never forget those words. That hit me hard and I felt low all day. I just needed one more line. How much harm can one line do? I was staggering down my dealers road, when a dark figure confronted me, “You owe me big time! I want the money back now!” I explained to him how sorry I was but my parents had kicked me out and I was staying with friends, I would have his money if he gave me a couple of weeks.

“HE

USED MY HEAD AS A FOOTBALL...”

what happened next. My drug dealer, a man I thought was the only one looking out and caring for me, raped me that night. Somehow I woke up in hospital. No one visited me because I had turned everyone I had ever loved against me, no one but myself was to blame for what had happened. I was discharged from hospital but I didn’t have anything but the clothes on my back. There I was on a park bench, bruises and cuts; another homeless person stinking and begging. I had never been so scared in my life. I now had two options, call my mum and beg for forgiveness or steal some money and get high. I sat there for a long time hesitant about both ideas, but thankfully I decided to call my mum. She was there in twenty minutes which just about gave me enough time to think about what I would do when I got home, I was depressed, and so I was going to need to borrow some money for some more gear. I got in the car but instead of heading home we went to another part of town, straight to rehab. If I had learnt anything from gossip mags it was that rehab was like a hotel, you went in, slept in a clean environment and went out. Soon I would be back on the good stuff and with my family’s money to support me. Three months later and I was still there, working hard, learning how to take care of myself. It was weird I never realized all I had forgotten, taking a shower, brushing my teeth, getting dressed in clean clothes. My parents were running out of money though and had to take me out. I took more drugs and was admitted back; I left again but eventually gave into drugs. You learn from your mistakes but drugs are different, you are not you anymore. I’m clean now, I have friends and family who love and trust me and I recently started dating. That takes a lot of confidence because when most people hear about my past they flinch and judge me, but I’m not that person. With no qualifications I can’t fulfill my childhood dreams, or be the best I could of been when I was twelve, but this is the new me, my new life. I still have brain damage, I always will, but I am able to function and share my experiences with other people. I wish I had listened; I wish someone had shown me what my life would become. I wish I had known that drugs weren’t cool.

“No, I want it now; you’re going to give it to me now.” Suddenly a big car pulled up, a man got out of it and pushed me to the ground, repeatedly kicking me in the head, I was nearly unconscious but I can clearly remember

Devon’s

Designs

FK: Do you think you have style? Are you confident about that? Devon: I like fashion so much, that I guess I am confident in it. I love to dress and I hate looking normal.

FK: What made you dress so uniquely? Devon: Erm... I don’t really know, I just hate looking like everybody else! I Love to look fashionable and try new styles out. FK: What are your favorite clothing boutiques?

FK: What inspires your sassy style? Devon: I take so much inspiration from fashion websites, like look book a lot, flipping through magazines and even when I see people walking down the street! FK: Do you ever worry about your sizes!? How do

Devon: I love to shop in places like Portobello market and around there. And also I like to go to charity shops because it’s basically vintage but it’s so much cheaper! I also love the ordinary high street shops, like top shop and new look!

you keep fit and keep in shape? FK: Have you ever been asked to model? Do you Devon: Well, I do so many team sports, like hockey, or netball. When I am at home, I sometimes go on a quick job or something... but I absolutely hate going to the gym!! FK: What influences your style? Devon: Quite a few people, but mostly Celebrities, especially those who have amazing dress sense, like Alexa Chung. But I have to say, I prefer English people and their style way more than Americans, mostly because I think British people are more original than Americans. FK: Have you ever considered fashion designing? Devon: OMG Yeah I have! But I am more interested in just getting into the fashion industry, because designing is way harder to get into and is too competitive for me! FK: Do you make your own designs? Devon: Yeah, sometimes. But it’s more like a trial and error kind of thing, because most of them go so wrong hahaha! FK: Do you have any tips for anyone to look as fab as you do? Devon: Just be yourself. And feel confident in what you wear!

want to model? Devon: Yeah I have been asked to model, actually- when I went to a gig in Camden! But at the time, unfortunately I was far too young. I don’t really know, I don’t think I would like too, because it’s way too pressurizing! FK: What would you like to be, if not a fashion designer/boutique owner etc? Devon: I would like to be a fashion journalist or work in a magazine to do with fashion, maybe not designing clothes but working on a catwalk and dressing models and stuff! FK: What is the best compliment you have ever received on your outfit? Devon: Uhm... ‚You look nice!‛ I don’t know (lol)

“I love to dress up, why not dress to impress!?”

FK: Do you ever get mistaken for someone famous? Devon: OMG yeah! Once these people came up to me on the street, thinking I was Effie from skins! But of course I had to let them down, and tell them that I wasn’t! FK: What’s your favorite brand? Devon: If I could afford it, Vivian Westwood, I love French connection, but for a high-street brand it’s kind of expensive. I like bags and fiorelli bags and stuff.
