WELCOME 2020: THE YEAR TO LIVE AND LOVE DESIGN
Alejandra Campos Event Director
Live Design is an ethos that illustrates everything that makes Top Drawer about so much more than just buying and selling.
A new decade calls for a bold start to the year and that’s exactly what Top Drawer S/S20 promises to be. For more than 30 years Top Drawer has been the bi-annual meeting place for creative retailers, interior professionals and brands for whom design is in their DNA. So when it came to presenting our 2020 campaign, there was no better place to start than the very thing that connects our community. Live Design is an ethos that illustrates everything that makes Top Drawer about so much more than just buying and selling, but also a place that stimulates the sharing of ideas and experiences. It captures both the individuality and togetherness of this incredible circle, and celebrates its love and passion for innovation and creativity. As we continue to evolve our offering in-line with what you want to see, this January we bring you more new names, new products and exclusive launches than ever before. Beautifully presented in our 10 sectors, be the first to preview the latest ranges from the industry’s biggest brands, including many who are brand new to the show. Of course, at Top Drawer ‘new’ doesn’t just mean to the show, with our PULSE | SPOTTED area which is solely committed to showcasing the work of emerging design and talent. By far one of Top Drawer’s biggest appeals is the opportunity to see both these new brands as well as established names, all under one roof. In addition to product insight, and as more and more of you are turning to us as a source for inspiration and advice, we are thrilled to also bring you fresh and unique content. Our world-class seminar programmes, RetailFest and Design Talk, are free-to-attend and packed with inspirational expert advice— specifically crafted to stimulate ideas and discussion, encourage growth and foster success from some of the best names in the business. Looking forward, we present the latest Trend Forecast in partnership with Flamingo, a global cultural strategy agency whose insight strengthens and enrichens our knowledge of developing trends. Here you have an exclusive preview of what is coming next and what is in-store at the show, where our trends will be brought to life by leading names from the retail industry. New this year is MATCH, an easy to use online tool that enables you to search and save your favourite products and brands, plan your visit to the show and get in touch with exhibitors to request meetings at the times that suit you best during your visit. If you have not done it yet, don’t forget to create your account on our website. This Preview magazine is just a snapshot of all the new products and brands you can discover at Top Drawer this January. We can’t wait for you to see the full offering at the show.

WHAT’S ON
CLO COLLECTION
WHERE HOUSEHOLD NAMES GET THEIR START: THE IMPORTANCE OF NEW BRAND SHOWCASES By Charlotte Abrahams, Writer and Spotted Curator Design surrounds us, it fills our homes, our work spaces and the built environment. At its best, design has the power to enhance our lives, both practically and aesthetically. But what do we mean by ‘good design’? Dieter Rams, the German industrial designer whose pared down, human-focused electrical gadgets made Braun a household name in the 1950s, summed it up in ten principals. “Good design”, he stated, “is always less but better; it makes a product useful and understandable; it is innovative, aesthetic, unobtrusive, honest, environmentally friendly, long lasting and thorough to the last detail.” His analysis is still spot on today and, while it’s true that too much of the stuff that surrounds us fails to adhere to at least one of his rules, there are also plenty of products that 6
do tick all the boxes. And it is those products that we are celebrating at Spotted. Spotted was set up a decade ago as a curated edit of good design made by emerging brands new to the UK trade fair market. The showcase has grown and changed over the years, but the fundamental principal remains the same: good design is important and therefore the creatives responsible for it must be helped to succeed. Spotted does this in several ways: firstly, the stands are subsidised. This is crucial – trade fairs are the best way for emerging brands to grow, but exhibiting is expensive and in the early years when cash is tight, the costs can be prohibitive. Secondly, there is lots of practical support, including a programme of webinars with on-line business school The Design Trust. This too is vital.
Designer-makers are creative, but it takes more than a brilliant product to be successful. If they are to prosper, they also need to be commercially savvy. Which is why, when we launched the Spotted Awards in January 2017, we made mentoring a key part of the prize. The Award, judged by a panel of retail experts from leading names such as The Conran Shop, Tate Enterprises, Wolf & Badger, Mini Moderns, Clippings and Habitat, is given to the three brands who best meet those principals of good design, and the prize includes oneto-one mentoring sessions with a range of top design, retail, business and marketing figures, including Patricia Vanden Akker, Founder of The Design Trust, Head of Design at Sainsburys and Argos Home, Andrew Tanner and Managing Director of Press Loft, Nicola Snell. I am hugely proud to be involved with Spotted. Over the last 10 years, the showcase has helped more than 400 new businesses launch their products to the trade and take a vital step towards commercial success. The exhibitors have always been selected because the products they make add something to our lives and this season’s edition is no exception. Brim-full of considered, exciting, aesthetically pleasing examples of stationery, homeware, gift and fashion, Spotted S/S20 is the place to discover the brands of the future. We look forward to seeing you there.
WHERE CUTTING-EDGE COMES TO LIFE PULSE continues to expand its offer with an exclusive edit of new designers and emerging talent. This includes SPOTTED and a showcase of retail-ready designs from a selection of UAL students and alumni. Be the first to spot the most original, cutting-edge design across modern living, fashion and giftware to make your offer truly unique. See our PULSE edit on page 28.

THE FIRST TO KNOW WHAT’S NEXT Flamingo is delighted to be Top Drawer’s official trends partner for a second consecutive season. Flamingo is a cultural strategy agency; we help shape and build brands by crafting their cultural fluency. Cultural fluency is a deep, almost subconscious understanding of culture. When brands have cultural fluency, they can play with
the boundaries of culture and find new expressions for it. We help our clients achieve this by harnessing the emergent and unseen patterns of culture. This helps us shape and build powerful strategy. As Top Drawer’s trends partner, we have outlined five trends in the retail space using our trend forecasting methodology, which
THIS SEASON’S MUST HAVE TRENDS
SERENE WARMTH A late afternoon, relaxing natural theme with touches of glamour. Dappled sun warmth and cool shade colours are juxtaposed in the raw fabrics, rich prints and smooth pale marbles and concrete. UNADORNED TACTILITY New interpretations of traditional materials and techniques for a new decade. Aged and natural patterns are hyperreal in blues and bright greens. Organic print and textures layered on to geo shapes give a bio-futurist look. REFINED ELEMENTALS Minimalist luxe in a subtle palette of neutrals, greens and blush. Chic details and textures add sophistication to the everyday. Smooth, circular forms soften and create a tranquil environment.

involves continuous analysis of the macro shifts that are driving largescale cultural change. Over time, these macro shifts impact consumption patterns, product preferences and belief systems, which results in trends. In the early stages of these developments, innovative businesses, brands, technologies, early adopters and social movements – we call these ‘indicators’ of change – begin to appear, visibly signalling the growth of new consumer needs. Flamingo takes these large consumer and cultural trends and we filter them down into actionable product direction, marketing concepts and visual strategy recommendations. Whether the overarching trend is ‘omni-wellness’ or ‘harmonious systems’, we trace these big ideas down into product and retail environment updates and evolutions to align with consumer attitudes and expectations for the new seasons. These trends have been researched and created specifically for 2020 and are being shown first and exclusively at Top Drawer.
RARE BLOOM Powerful pigmented florals are grounded with soft brown leathers. Florals add deep intensity of reds, oranges and purples, clashing with acid lime, tempered with soft peachy coral. A fantasy garden that both soothes and excites the senses. PLAYFUL CHROMATICS Fun filled rainbow palettes of block colours that bring modernity through mid-tone brights. Varied hues are achieved through mixed material densities. Key colour neo mint adds to a positive and fresh start for 2020. To see these trends brought to life through product examples, turn to Page 14.

RETAILFEST: YOUR NEW STRATEGY STARTS HERE
PRESS RELEASE TIPS FROM PRESS LOFT
Is it your first time writing a press release? Don’t panic! Press Loft (www.pressloft.com), the PR Platform for interiors & gift brands, has given you a few simple rules to follow to help you write a press release that will stand out from the crowd. 1. Create A Timely Title A press release title is the first thing that attracts the journalist to open your email. Journalists are always interested in the latest trends and new product launches. Make sure your title excites them enough to want to know more! Short and snappy is the way forward, keeping your press release title to 7 – 12 words makes it easy for the journalist to read. If you were launching a new range, something like ‘New planter brand launches terrazzo range for Christmas’ would be perfect! This title manages to fit in the launch, a popular trend and a season all in eight words. Other examples could be ‘Sofa company launches teal range or
corner sofas’ or ‘Stationery brand partners with leading designer’ 2. Include Images If you are sending a press release about a new product or collection, include low-resolution images in the press release. These need to be positioned high up in the press release so the journalist can scan them as soon as they open the release. Be sure you have highresolution versions of any images you include in your press release as print journalists will need these to feature you. More Tips To discover Press Loft’s other Press Release tips to make you stand out from the crowd head to topdrawer.co.uk/blog or contact us to book an appointment for their Retail Clinic at Top Drawer.

WHAT’S ON BEYOND THE SUPERFICIAL: WHY EXPERIENCE IS THE FUTURE OF DESIGN By Harry McKinley, Hospitality consultant and DesignTalk curator
HALCYON DAYS + CAVERSWALL
I’m increasingly reminded of a meeting with industry heavyweight Adam Tihany, some years ago during a Paris summer. Sometimes called the first specialised restaurant designer, I’d met with him to discuss his prodigious career. “People don’t go to restaurants or bars because they are hungry or thirsty,” he explained. “They can always go to the fridge and make a sandwich or pour a glass of water. They go to restaurants and bars for an experience and design is at the forefront of delivering those experiences.” It’s a sentiment that’s even more relevant today and one that isn’t relegated to the world of hospitality, as design rapidly evolves to consider not just how something looks or works, but how it makes us feel.
THE INDIGO CLUB: A DIFFERENT WAY TO VISIT
When The Standard Hotels opened their first landmark London outpost recently, punters cooed over its period stylings – a mix of 50s, 60s and 70s references. Yes, the lamps are beautiful and the colours eye-catching, but it’s arguably the intangible sense of nostalgia that most captivates visitors, as they are transported from the cacophony of Kings Cross to the world of Mad Men and Studio 54. At Manchester’s CULTUREPLEX, another much vaunted new F&B opening from the founders of Bistrotheque and Hoi Polloi at Ace London, the industrial interior draws heavily from the building’s past as a goods warehouse. It is a cavernous space where coffeeshop, bar, restaurant and lounge piece together as a
single boisterous jigsaw – the thoughtful design front and centre of a distinctive, multifaceted social experience. Elsewhere, our preoccupation with urban jungles - one of the most prevalent trends in interiors - seeks to rekindle a connection with the natural world; designers mull over mood-enhancing colours, prioritising wellness along with aesthetics; and makers break with tradition to bring innovation to tableware, reimagining how we interact with the objects around us and knowing that, these days, it’s not just what’s on the plate, but equally the plate itself that matters. Visitors to Top Drawer will be able to experience these developments first hand, with many of the industry’s leading tableware brands woven into the show as part of the dedicated Hospitality Trail. See more on page 25 and follow the trail online. Of course, the conversations around experiential design are not set to fade, nor is it a fad, instead experiential design is perhaps best considered a movement, forcing us all to ask, what role can design play in creating memorable, lasting and meaningful moments?
