PRESIDENT’S REPORT It is with much sadness that I present the Avoca Beach SLSC annual report. This season saw the passing of 2 stalwarts of Avoca Beach SLSC, Jim Harpur and Bryce Norman. In some ways it is fitting that these great mates and life members of the Avoca Beach SLSC should pass away so close to each other. Both men contributed enormously to the development of the club over many years and were responsible for the development of a lifesaving ethos accompanying a competitive goal. Both Jim and Bryce will be missed, not only for their contributions but also for their mateship and close relationships that they have established throughout the club. Avoca also mourned the loss of club members’ children with the passing of Jack McCabe and Sarah O’Grady. We support them in these difficult times. On the beach we continue to provide a safe and well patrolled beach for the local community and visiting tourists. No lives were lost and rescues were down on previous years despite weeks of strong swell. Brad Scott came on board as our new Director of Lifesaving and has done an excellent job in encouraging involvement and motivating patrolling members. Congratulations to Jono Donnelly on receiving the Patrolman of the Year Award for his contributions to patrols at Avoca Beach. Also special mention of Nigel Ball’s patrol for their magnificent efforts this year and being acknowledged as Patrol of the Year. Long-time supporters of Avoca Beach SLSC have been the Hunter Family and once again their support of the boat section through Raine & Horne Avoca is valued. Additional to this, Brett was instrumental in bringing on NAB as a major club sponsor. NAB’s association is a great partnership on which we hope to build in the future years. Michael’s promotion of the Rocks to Rocks achieved its 20th year which is a tremendous support of the club over an extended period.
Gordon Stalley and his business Premier Fire Protection are instrumental in the support of our coaching within the club and his support is appreciated. Gordon has been a great contributor to the local community. Avoca Beach Bowling and Recreation Club are generous supporters of Avoca Beach SLSC and Chris Unger at Wyong Leagues has gone out of his way to investigate ways of supporting the community. I ask in return that our members back the local club and continue its viability to continue community support. Also assisting this year has been Ausgrid who are reviewing and upgrading our power sources to make us more efficient. Central Coast Surf Life Saving and Gosford Council also financially support the club and assistance is appreciated. As this report is being written we farewell our Branch CEO Chad Griffiths who has done an outstanding job in his role with the Branch and we wish him every success in the future. I would like to thank our other sponsors who are acknowledged in the front of our annual report and encourage all members to support their organisations. The club executive continues their often thankless task of ensuring that the club functions effectively. Murray Tancred and Deb Rendall continue to work with the growth of our Nipper Section resulting in them achieving 2nd place in the State Championships. Joe Murray, as Director of Finance, has continued his fine job in overseeing the financial basis of the club. This year Spike once again ran a successful bar and worked with Nan to develop a professional approach to functions. We thank both for their efforts in these areas. This season we adopted a more professional approach to caretaking with this being overseen by George Spencer who has ensured a cleaner, better maintained facility. George puts in many hours of volunteer labour as well as gym coordinator and this is valued. Kylie continues to grow in her role as administrator and has built her role substantially over the past year as her experience has grown. Kylie has been able to support the function side of the facility, along with Nan, in an effort to ensure that we always have someone who can undertake the role. Wendy Norman and Deb Rendall have continued their volunteer administrative duties. Sonya’s efforts with uniform and registration have assisted in spreading the load within the club.

Trevor Gee takes to the Beach Page 8
Clubs exist on volunteers and I would like to thank Damien Benson for his efforts this year and congratulate him on being named Bryce Norman Club Person of the Year. It is hard to acknowledge all those who assist but I would like to pay a special mention to the Duerdan Family for their outstanding contribution at all levels this year.
Matt Jones competing at Aussies
Team performances once again highlighted the depth of the club, winning Gold in the NSW Open Taplin and a bronze in The Lifesaver Relay at the Australian Championships.
Avoca has a proud history in ski completion and the efforts of this year indicate that this could be another outstanding era for the club. At NSW level we achieved Gold in the double (Gordo & Pete), Silver Single Ski (Hamo), 3rd Ski Relay (Hamo, Lachy, Gordo) and 1st 17yrs Ski. At Aussies the results were 1st 30-35yrs Ski (Gordo), 1st Open Ski (Lachy), 2nd Double Ski ( Hamo, Lachy) and 3rd in Ski Relay. These results were not even matched by the strong Queensland clubs. Other results were outstanding with Shadey and Chris getting together to take out the Open Australian Board Rescue Championship. Their efforts highlight the great camaraderie within the group. Daniel backed this up with 1st in Open Board at State and 3rd at Aussies. Our girls were unlucky at Aussies not to be champions but can be very proud of achieving Silver in the U19yrs Board Relay. Congratulations to Codie, Kaitlyn and Amy. On the beach we were once again strong with the limited competitors. Jake O’Brien won Gold in Flags and Sprint at NSW and was a finalist in both events at Aussies. He was also a member of the NSW State Team and was elected in the High Performance Squad along with Riley and Bianca. Trent Martin was a member of the Nutri Grain series and was unable to compete at Aussies due to the birth of his child. Lachlan Tames’ effort in winning consecutive Gold Medals in the Open Ski has not previously been achieved in the club and was an exceptional effort that will be talked about for many years to come. Masters competition this season was once again coordinated by Jeff Smith and he has done a great job. While we did not have large numbers attend State or Aussies, we did have a good turnout for the Branch Titles and once again achieved success. Notable performances in the masters were: Gordo 1st 30-34yrs Ski; Hamo, Matt Jones, Gordo 1st 110yrs Ski Relay; Corey and Trent 1st 3034yrs Board Rescue.
Australian Champions Master Ski Relay at Aussies
Jim McAtamney took over the role of coordinating the Door Knock and did an outstanding job in organising and coordinating the event. The Golf day, run by Glenn O’Brien and Keith Ferrier was again well supported and provided much needed income to the club. Con and Marg Ryan, through their association with PAKS continue to support in providing goods and prizes that we utilise at these events. Con has also been instrumental in getting the involvement of Casio to support these events. Our Ladies Auxiliary maintains an important supportive role within the club, assisting in Sippers, providing work parties and doing much needed fund raising. Thanks to all those who have assisted in this area. With the support of Raine and Horne and NAB we were able to launch the Jim Harpur Surfboat. This was a special day for the club and the sponsors. I would like to express my appreciation to Joyce for her permission to name the boat after Jim. And it was fantastic to see it cross the line 1st at The National Championships. We welcome our newest Life Member, Richard Brierty to join a group of esteemed members. Richard joins Sharon as the first husband and wife Life Members of the club. Congratulations to all awardees at our presentation and we wish the nominees for Branch awards every success. A quote for those who sometimes criticise the people who do have a go. “Let’s be honest. There’s not a business anywhere that is without problems. Business is complicated and imperfect. Every business everywhere is staffed with imperfect human beings and exists by providing a product or service to other imperfect human beings.” “The key is to just get on the bike, and the key to getting on the bike… is to stop thinking about ‘there are a bunch of reasons I might fall off’ and just hop on and peddle the damned thing. You can pick up a map, a tire pump, and better footwear along the way.” Garry Clarke, President – Avoca Beach SLSC

Our success in boats in recent years has been widely applauded but the efforts of The Grease Monkeys to go undefeated in the Age Group at all levels of competition is truly an outstanding effort.
As a club we need to continue to promote the development of lifesaving and I thank all those who have contributed this year. To members that patrol our beach I look forward to your continued efforts and pass on the thanks of the entire community for the time you give.

Up and coming competitor Riley Fitzsimmons performed outstandingly, achieving Gold in U17 Ski at NSW and Gold in U17 Board at Aussies. Brad and Blake supported Riley in winning bronze in the Board Relay at NSW.
Mike and Andy continue to work with the young brigade in training our members but we are always looking for more support. We thank Craig Anderson for his efforts over the past few years overseeing lifesaving education. Our group of trainers and assessors has maintained its growth from last year and we once again thank Mick Kendal, Andy Hoban, Craig Anderson, Jeff Barnes, Dylan Coleman, Scott Smith, Jono Donnelly and Garry Clarke for their efforts.

Competitively it was again a successful year even though our numbers were slightly down. As a club we won Nippers Branch, by the highest margin ever, were 2nd at Open Branch and won Masters Branch. We again were the premier boat club in the Branch.
DIRECTOR OF ADMINISTRATION As another season passes we can rejoice in the fact that once again our club has fulfilled its duty and patrolled our beach with no lives lost. Thank you to every person who has patrolled our beach and kept the community safe at what is probably the busiest beach on the Central Coast. Congratulations to our competitors who have also been triumphant at Branch, State and Aussies, the results at these events have been outstanding and the hard work and training is evident by the results. Thanks to all the coaches who have trained the competitors and of course all the families and supporters who proudly wear the club colours to cheer on the competitors. Thank you to Kylie at the office who makes my job that much easier. I did say that this year would be a bit easier and it can only be plain sailing from here. Thanks to all the Board members, Wendy, Joe, Matt, John, Murray and newest member Brad Scott. Everyone has a role and their input is helping to make our club a positive and successful environment for the members and the community to be associated with. On a sad note this season we had to say goodbye to two pioneers of the club, Jim Harpur and Bryce Norman. We will certainly miss their guidance and input into all things surf lifesaving and all things Avoca Beach. A very big hole has been left in Avoca Beach Surf Club with their passing and our thoughts are with their families always. Well that about wraps it up for another year, thank you to all the members for volunteering to be part of Avoca Beach Surf Club and making a difference.
of Lifesaving at Avoca, Director of Lifesaving Central Coast and also as a New South Wales Duty Officer. Filling all three roles is an enormous task so when he decided to resign as club captain, and the ‘hot potato’ was thrown in my direction, naturally I caught it. There were two other reasons, the first was that I had received a lot of coaching, mentoring, etc. from a lot of people growing up in the club so I felt it was an opportunity to return the favour. Secondly, it was out of respect for Jim Harpur. A lot has been said about Jim and his heroic stature recently, but growing up in the club, I saw him as a quietly spoken older bloke who always had time for a chat on the beach with me and other younger members. He was a friend of my family from the 1940’s onwards and I still have the image in my mind of him walking down the ramp in front of the club for his afternoon swim…“g’day young Scotty”, he always said as he came over to ask how I was going. The other iconic member we lost recently is Bryce Norman. Bryce talked my father into joining the club in 1947, and they rowed together for years after that. When I sat for my bronze medallion in 1978, I remember how relieved my bronze squad team mates and I were when we found out that it was ‘our’ Bristo who would be examining us. He was one of us, we all knew him and we knew he wouldn’t be too hard on us. Jim and Bryce made an immeasurable contribution to lifesaving and our club community and deserve all the respect they receive. I think they would agree that there are two other people who have made a very different, but equally important contribution to our club. Women in Lifesaving – Cecely Norman and Joyce Harpur
Early in the season Brett Beswick asked me to take one of the Club Vice Captain positions. I’d been back in the club for four or five years and loving it so it was relatively easy decision to make. At the time, Brett was acting as Director
Way back in year eleven my classmates and I were asked to write an essay on something we were involved in on the weekend. I wrote about the surf club, patrols, carnivals and so on. As an afterthought I mentioned that for the women, there was the ladies auxiliary. Mrs Godsell, a young female teacher straight out of teachers college, handed my essay back with no mark, just a comment…‘Brad Scott, you are a male chauvinist!’ Of course she was right. For decades women were excluded from the front line of lifesaving but

On Australia Day, John Mitchell came over to me and asked if he could set up the barbecue in front of one of the roller doors. I said to him, “you don’t have to ask me, you’re John Mitchell”…he said, “yes…but you’re the Patrol Captain”. What this brief exchange demonstrates is the place the Patrol Captain should hold within the club. When the flags are up, the Patrol Captain is in charge and deserves the respect and cooperation of all other members. It’s a difficult job with a lot of responsibility and every Patrol Captain did an exceptional job this season as shown by the absence of major incidents. Thank you to each of them and also to Garry Clarke, David O’Grady and the Club Committee (Board of Directors) who gave me a lot of good advice and a lot of laughs over the season. Thanks also to the ‘first aid room fairy’. She appears out of nowhere around three am every week or so and restocks the first aid room. She is rarely seen and does her job quietly and without the need for recognition. She was involved in treating spinal injuries and dislocations on top of her patrol obligations and boat rowing. The Chief Instructor, Craig Anderson, has a similarly quiet approach. He has an encyclopedic knowledge of surf lifesaving and on top of that, he’s a great bloke to have a chat with on Howard’s bench. He fills one of the most important roles in the club and with five years under his belt he really deserves a break so we hope to have someone to help him out next season. On Christmas afternoon I was poolside at my sister’s house in Wamberal after stuffing down a couple of kilos of ham. I

While we are on the topic of young legends I have to mention Luke Pearce. Anyone who swam in the Hunters’ Rocks to Rocks would remember that the rip in the corner was moving quite fast that day. Luke Pierce was out in the water after the swim getting a few waves on a racing board. What Luke did will never win a major award because it had three missing ingredients. There was no noise, no panic and no screaming IRB engine and as a consequence, nobody noticed. Three kids between eight and ten years old jumped into the water on the edge of the bank on body boards without flippers. They were almost immediately washed into the rip. Luke spotted them early on and paddled towards the rocks. He put himself in a position so that when the rip took the kids, they came straight to him. Luke grabbed all three, signalled the duck and the driver came

out and picked them up. Back on the beach, the kids were happy and having a bit of a laugh, but without intervention, they would have drowned. Luke walked quietly up the beach, didn’t say a word, and put his board away. I’m guessing that Luke has come through the nipper movement and if that’s the case, the rescue shows the importance of the junior movement and the skills that it teaches. Nice one Luke!

nevertheless built a movement that has provided constant and unconditional support for lifesaving. I’ve always known two of the most important members in the club’s history as Mrs Norman and Mrs Harpur, but as Club Captain, I’m going to risk it and call them Cec and Joyce. What Cec and Joyce started and persisted with for so many decades laid the foundation for what evolved into womens’ front line involvement in lifesaving. In the late seventies women like Stacey Smith and Leslie Adamski started training for their bronze medallion despite the knowledge that they would never receive it. A few years later, Sharon Paterson, Lisa Benson, Jacky and Kathy Hoban, Michelle, Annette and Alison Dorrell were amongst the first qualified female lifesavers in the country. We now have young women like Cody-Leigh Callaghan, Kaitlyn Matuschka and Amy Annabel. They are super-fit, skilled and show amazing courage in big surf. They’re not only involved in coaching of juniors but are considered by Murray Tancred to be amongst the best. The icing on the cake this season was a top two finish in an Australian National Board Relay championship which of course not only proves that they are great athletes but also that they are invaluable on patrol. They are also great role models for younger members.
DIRECTOR OF LIFESAVING cont. received a call from Surf-com to say that things had turned nasty back at Avoca. The surf was pumping, the beach had been closed for most of the day but there were still probably between 100 and 200 people in the water. I drove back to the beach and wandered down to the northern side of the bank. We were low on numbers but fortunately a few members from North Avoca had come down to lend a hand. I started by getting people out of the water or pushing them to the south, back onto the bank. Quent and Bill Mitchell had been there all afternoon and I was a bit worried I was going to push the crowd so far south they’d fall off the other side of the bank into the other rip. Quent would have had to pull off the board rescue of the century of about 100 people. That would have been a big ask even for Quent, who is one of the most experienced board paddlers in the club. Just as things were going slightly pear shaped, I noticed that Dave Babbage and Damien Benson had arrived and were sitting on the IRB in the corner. What a relief! The combined IRB experience of those guys is massive and Dave’s diligence and technical knowledge as IRB captain ensured the ducks were always ready to go if necessary. Thanks Dave and congratulations to Damien for being awarded the Bryce Norman Medal.

Peter Saint and Larissa Llowarch are worth their weight in gold. Peter is the benchmark for the club when it comes to first aid treatment. The time they both spent on patrol over summer was phenomenal so thank you, and by the way, I think you’ve both done enough over the last year or two to receive a life time exemption from selling raffle tickets… that’s official! The last member of the lifesaving committee is Sharon Brierty. Sharon’s experience on the beach means that she often operates by intuition. You can’t get her extensive experience out of the bronze medallion handbook. Sharon was a great R&R team mate thirty years ago but she was an even better board rescue partner this season…thanks for everything Shaz! Patrol of the Year Each of the patrols had a great season but in the end for the patrol of the year I had to decide between the ‘Multi Tasker Patrol’ and the ‘Swiss Watch Patrol’. The ‘Multi Taskers’ prove the value of women at the coal face of lifesaving. They have amongst them the best swimmers, board paddlers and boat rowers in the club. Most of them have done enough years to switch to active reserve or long service but they still come to patrols, often with their kids. They know they can rely on each other and consequently have great team moral. Their captain is one of very few people who can come to patrol in gum boots and turn it into a fashion statement. I wasn’t sure whether to add or deduct points for the gum boots. The Multi Taskers of course are the members of the Sharon Brierty patrol. They were runners up but only by the narrowest of margins. The patrol of the year runs like a swiss watch. Close to perfect attendance, the captains office and first aid room are kept in impeccable condition. The patrol members always have their roles clearly defined. There is excellent swimming ability across the patrol. Their captain attended board training sessions from the beginning of the season, trained all season, and competed at the Australian Masters Championships. With two other patrol members he pulled

Overall, the club is in great shape and the standard of lifesaving is excellent. We have an enormous capability across all the required skill sets but it’s up to us to make sure we utilise it and that the work load is spread as evenly as possible across the membership. Finally, thank you to every member who turned up to the beach this year to help out, particularly those who attended their rostered patrols. Thanks also to the life

Next Season Attendance of rostered patrols is something we need to improve on next season. I’m not sure when the idea that doing twenty five hours whenever we feel like it was introduced but it’s a bad idea and it doesn’t work. The roster is designed to spread skills out so we don’t have twenty people signed on when the beach is like a pond and nobody there when we have monster surf. Suggestions have been made about better communication to remind members via sms, email, facebook or the website when they are on patrol. Personally, I like the old school approach of sticking a copy of the patrol roster on the fridge with a bit of blu-tack…It’s not fancy, but it works!

At nineteen years of age he took on a Patrol Captaincy this season for the first time. He is proficient in every aspect of lifesaving…swimming, board paddling, first aid, IRB and Jet Ski driving. He is also an instructor. He’s passionate, motivated and he seems to inspire that in other people. On every occasion over the season when we had roster issues he didn’t only volunteer to back up, but he did so with such speed that I suspect he has some sort of mind reading ability. He is a great role model for younger members. The first ever winner of the Jim Harpur Trophy for Patrolman of the Year is Jonathon Donnelly.

DIRECTOR OF FINANCE Another season has passed and financially the club has managed to finish with a small operating surplus once again. We have none the less managed to see some significant spending and income this year. In particular we have to thank Brett Hunter for all his work in gaining the sponsorship from NAB for the purchase of the Jim Harpur and the ongoing funding of the club to the tune of $45,000 over three years. A significant piece of community fund raising has been in the form of the Pink Boat committee who managed to raise sufficient money through community support to purchase a boat to be named the Sandy Mitchell. From the financial point of view this source of funds to buy club equipment is reminiscent of the community spirit of the past and was a pleasure to see. There were way too many people involved to thank individually here. A discussion of fundraising through sponsorship cannot be finished without acknowledging the work of our president Garry Clarke. In the next season we expect to be bringing Erina Fair on board as a major sponsor of the Nippers and Travelworld, Avoca Beach as a Gold Sponsor. In other fund raising activities we have to thank Jim McAtamney and all the collectors, counters and others for all their efforts in raising over $13,000 in the ‘Door Knock’ this season. Also the Nippers BBQs, Beach raffles and

Garry Clarke’s tireless efforts up at the Avoca Pub at the meat raffle. Every bit counts! As an entity the main source of club funds has been the Function Centre which has maintained a steady flow of income for the club. This area is being revisited by the board in how we do it as we now find ourselves in competition with clubs like Wamberal and the Trojans Rugby who are operated commercially by professional organisations. This does not mean that we have to do the same and in fact that would be contra to the views expressed by many club members. However, it does not mean that we can go ahead without examining how we operate in this new market. The Functions area has been running successfully now since the renovation of the club and will be reviewed by the board in the early parts of the 2012/2013 financial year. Discussion of functions cannot be concluded, however without thanking people like Kylie Micklethwaite, Nan Jones, George Spencer, Spike Jones and Jack Leary for the work that they have put into it this year. We could not have survived 2011/2012 without them. The issues of using common accounting programs across the branch, standardising charts of accounts, tightening up of the charities requirements and many others still hover out there in space but as yet nothing has come up to significantly affect our operations and so I look forward to the next season being as successful in the financial area. DIRECTOR OF COMPETITION
A third in the Lifesaver Relay, the results from Surfboard Riding area, where Michael Bain, carved up the ocean in both U17 and Opens events and the earlier results from the Masters Championships which were highlighted by the new young Masters who took to the competition with skill and fun: Trent McLuckie, Gordo Jones, Matt Jones, Corey Myers, Trevor Gee, competing in the water and on the sand! It was great to see them join up with the older Masters. And the continuing success in the boat area by the Tweakers and the Zuluz, all made for an outstanding week at the Australian Championships. The Club finished 17th in Australia in the Opens and 18th in the Masters. A great result!! These achievements are brought about by a crew of people, who I would now like to thank for all their efforts, time and assistance throughout the year: The Coaches: This year the coaching and training programs were developed for the competitions by Nigel Tebb, Matt Gibbs, Chris Parker and Spike Jones.
Gear: This year the gear was looked after by Trevor Tame with assistance from Bobby Dorrell. Thanks guys! Administration: Gordo thanks for all the time you have put in with the entries, and to the Masters Committee who take care of their entries and administration, and to Kylie for getting the information out to the Members, and to Nigel Tebb and Matt Jones for the preparation in the training schedules, information and policies. Thanks also to everyone who assisted in the Door Knock this year, as this is the major fundraiser for each section, and assists in the purchase of new equipment. Just a reminder to all that the Worlds will be on in Adelaide in November 2012. Matt Mitchell, Director of Competition – Avoca Beach SLSC
SPECIAL EVENTS 2011/2012 Annual Life Member’s Dinner – September 2011 The dinner opened with one minutes silence to honour the passing of Avoca Beach Surf Lifesaving Club Life Member, Jim Harpur. Followed by a welcome to all members and a special welcome to Richard Brierty, who was awarded Life membership by club members for his services to the club. Congratulations Richard. President Garry Clarke addressed the gathering to report on the club’s progress. It was another memorable night excellently organised by Jim McAtamney and Mike Tamblyn, and wonderfully catered for by Mr. Catering.

Finals Sunday saw the Club as a whole come out and support all our competitors, as everyone rushed from one section to another. To see Daniel Shade return to competition, to the young U17 girls in the Board Relay, to the old Nipper pairing of Chris Parker and Daniel Shade bring in gold at the Board Rescue, to Riley Fitzsimmons stamping his authority in the U17 Board, and then climax in the ski area, with 2 teams in the Double Ski and the sensational win by Lachlan Tame in the Open Ski. What a day it was!!!!
ab
The start of the finals began with the moving tribute and one minute silence for Bryce Norman, and then the new boat, the Jim Harpur was brought home by the young U19 crew, The Grease Monkeys in the winning position.

For a Director of Competition, the climax of the season is Finals at Aussies!!! And this year the finals at Aussies was awesome!!!
The Officials: Without officials our competitors cannot compete! To Chris Gathercole, who stepped up to the Branch position of Carnival Manager for all the Central Coast carnivals, thank you for your dedication and commitment. Our officials this year were mainly in the boat section: Michael Tamblyn, Bryan Low, Kevin Bootle, Bob Dorrell, Jeff Doyle, Maree Bootle, Jennifer Dykes, and Marie Ward, Garry Clarke officiating in the Opens.
SPECIAL EVENTS 2011/2012 cont. Patrol Trailer Christening – December 11th 2011 Proudly sponsored by Kieren Moore/AIR-PAK Sheet Metal and the Avoca Beach Surf Lifesaving Club Ladies Auxiliary. On Sunday morning 11th December, Kieren Moore with his family, members of the Ladies Auxiliary and club members gathered on the surf club balcony. President Garry Clarke officially acknowledged the great financial contribution donated by both parties and stressed the importance of the need to keep our beach safe. The patrol trailer is a vital additional piece of equipment to the effective patrolling of Avoca Beach. After this address the trailer was officially christened on the beach with a bottle of Champagne. Many thanks to Kieren Moore and the Ladies Auxiliary. Avoca Beach Cellars Golf Day – 28th December 2011 Once again, thank you to Glen O’Brien and Keith Ferrier for organising another great event. Ninety plus players took to the greens and over $1,000 was raised on the day. Another great day had by all.

Annual Door Knock Appeal – January 2012 Thank you to Jim McAtamney, all the members who coordinated the timetable and the collection points. Thank you to the collectors and the money counters. Every cent counts as the club is a huge facility to run. $15,150 was raised over the weekend. A wonderful effort. Boat Christening…The Jim Harpur – March 3rd 2012 Our newest surf boat was proudly sponsored by NAB and Raine & Horne. Representatives of both sponsors, club members and guests gathered at the club. The boat was named after the late Jim Harpur. Jim was a Life member of the club and a “boatie”. After the wonderful tribute to Jim and speeches by the sponsors, NAB and Raine & Horne, Joyce Harpur did the honours and christened the boat. Morning tea followed as all watched the young Grease Monkeys’ crew display their skills, rowing the Jim Harpur in and out through the surf. Raine & Horne/Hunters Annual Rocks To Rocks – February 18th 2012 WOW. It was the 20th year of staging this wonderful event combining both Avoca and North Avoca surf club members. FUNCTIONS REPORT
2011/2012 saw another successful season of training and education at AB SLSC. As usual I have many people to thank for this success, but even more so as this is my last year as Chief Instructor. This season, as was last season, much of the training was carried out by our newest trainers, Jono Donnelly, Dylan Coleman, Scott Smith and Matt Williams. Their efforts in training Bronze Medallion has been greatly appreciated. Training of bronze squads by Mick Kendal and Andy Hoban is a great asset to our club and I would like to thank them for their time and effort over the years I have acted as Chief Instructor. Many thanks to Jeff Barnes for his work this season in training of IRB crew and drivers along with his efforts in

WATER Report Avoca’s swimmers this year produced some outstanding results considering the reduced numbers competing this season. The most outstanding performers were Chris Parker, Robert Annabel and Trent Martin. Rob was successful in gaining a bronze medal at The State Championships while Chris achieved a bronze medal in the 0’24 swim. Chis also achieved a Gold medal at the Australian Championships, partnering Daniel Shade in the

We have had a couple of great nights for members this year with a fundraiser for the Pink Boat, a band night in January, Sunday Sippers, Captain’s Keg and I’m sure you will all agree, a fantastic Presentation Night. Not all of the functions for members need to raise money, just cover costs, so if you have an idea for a good night please contact Kylie at the office.
Other members who lend their time season after season in training, re-quals and administration work are all appreciated, special thanks to Garry Clarke, Don Cook, Sharon Brierty and Kylie Hoban.

It has been another successful year for functions. We had an incredibly busy year with over 100 functions and meetings held at the Club. We had weddings on both Friday and Saturday nights for most nights in October/November and February/March. We have increased the amount of corporate clients in the Club Room and Main Hall during the weekdays, and we hope to attract new business in the upcoming year. This creates a tremendous amount of work for our volunteers and paid workers, so a big thank you to everybody who puts in the time and effort to make sure these events run smoothly. You know who you are! There is no doubt that Avoca Beach SLSC needs the revenue from functions to be able to keep our doors open. Functions contributed $135,000 to the clubs overall cashflow.
training the nippers in Surf Rescue Certificate. As always Dave Babbage was there to assist in IRB work and training. Thanks Dave.
Open Board Rescue. In the Rocks to Rocks it was fantastic for Chris to come out 1st and re-establish Avoca Beach’s dominance in the event. Trent and Chris combined as swimmers in the Taplin relay team to bring home gold in the State Championships. Trent also was successful in competing in the prestigious Nutri Grain Series as the only Central Coast Competitor in the male division. Brad McCloghry performed well at all levels without picking up a swim medal at State or Aussies. It is great to see the progress he is making and I am sure that he will be up there with the best in the coming years. The girls concentrated mainly on their team events with Amy Annabel, Cody-Leigh Callaghan and Kaitlyn Matuschka contributing strongly throughout the year to produce some excellent results for the girls. In the Masters it was great to see the evergreen Trevor Gee swimming competitively at Aussies. He is a true inspiration to his fellow masters competitors. Corey Myers teamed up with Trent in his inaugual year in masters to take out the 30-35yrs Board Rescue at Aussies. It was a pity that we did not compete in the belt events this year but I am sure we will revitalise this event in the coming season. Darren Clarke, Water Captain – Avoca Beach SLSC
Beach Report We again have had big success on the sand this year with medals being won at Branch and State level and finalists in the Aussies. The season started with Jake O’Brien and Bianca Mould being selected in the High Performance Squad. The athletes went into camp at Wollongong and then competed in the first round of the Sydney Water Series at Corrimal in October with some excellent results. Jake was also a member of the NSW team. We proved dominant in the Branch Carnival this year with

Jake O’Brien and Bianca Mould winning both the U17 and Open Events in the Sprint. The Flags was a similar result with Jake winning the U17 and 2nd in the Opens, and Bianca winning both U17 and Opens. We have some other strong competitors too, with results to Nicole Richards, Josh Barnes, Matthew Richards, Kaitlyn Duursma and Alex McIntyre. Monique Craft was another standout with 1st place in U19 Sprint and Flags. All competitors combined their strengths to win the U19 Male and Female Relays, and both the Open Relays. Well done to a great carnival. The State Championships saw a great result for Jake winning both the U17 Sprint and Flags and getting into the finals for the Flags. Another great result was the U19 Female Beach Relay with Monique, Kaitlyn, Bianca and Nicole coming 3rd Place. The Aussie titles saw lots of finalists but unfortunately no medals this year. Congratulations to all the Beach competitors and we look forward to another year of success in the 2012/2013 season. Well done!
LADIES AUXILIARY Another season has come to a close, and a very sad one at that. The club has experienced the loss of two much loved and respected life members – Jim Harpur and Bryce Norman. And members of other families closely associated with the club. We extend our deepest sympathy to you all and hope we have been able to assist your families in some way. We are always here to help. Fundraisers 1. BBQ’S We had a fairly good season with our BBQ’s being the biggest fundraiser, raising approximately $3,100. Our expenses were more this season but we tried to keep our prices the same for families. The girls do a great job each week at Sippers, providing great meals, to supplement a

Thank you to Virginia Leary, Jan King with the help of Margie for their organising of the rosters and pickups every week. Thank you to our team leaders and the girls for doing such a great job. We cannot do without you all. Please come back next season.
Fiona and Dave for the Annual Report
2. Movie Nights The ladies organised and held two movie nights in conjunction with Avoca Beach Theatre which raised $890 and $2,400 respectively. Both were excellent nights and at the same time great fundraisers. Thank you to all the girls for the wonderful food. It was the talk of the town.
Life Member Amy Britton and family, left Avoca Beach after being residents for approximately fifty years. In appreciation for her support and fundraising efforts over these years, a photograph of Avoca (with her house in it) is to be presented to her on behalf of Avoca Beach SLSC and the Ladies Auxiliary.
Special thanks to Karen Duerden and Julie Bromley for their great effort and time put into organising both functions. More next season.
Our First Friday of the Month Lunch get together is still happening. Contact Margie for venues.
We have pledged to raise $20,000 over four years to purchase a new IRB for the club. Our term deposit is now $20,000, so we are well on track to assist the Senior club with any surf life saving equipment they may require. This is always our main objective.
Sewing Ladies for club gear
On a very personal note Joyce and Cec would like to thank all you wonderful girls for catering for Jim’s and Bryce’s after funeral gatherings at the club. Words cannot express our gratitude. What would this club do without our Auxiliary? We love you all. Congratulations to all our wonderful patrol members who keep the beach safe all season. Your volunteer work is essential. Lastly, congratulations to all our competitors at all levels. Juniors, Seniors and Masters. Especially, the juniors for your outstanding success at the State titles. You have done the club proud. In conclusion, President Jan Gee and the committee would like to thank all you girls for being on hand whenever or wherever help is needed. We hope to see you all back again next season to continue our fundraising aims and club support.

Board and Ski Report Let me start this year’s report by thanking all the coaches and trainers. Spike Jones and Daniel Shade with the board paddlers and Matt Jones and Lachlan Tame, working with the ski paddlers. They gave up their spare time to spend time on the water’s edge and out in the waves in all sorts of weather, without these guys Avoca would not have achieved the outstanding results in all competitions ranging from our own club championships through to Australian titles. Wow, what a year Avoca had in the competitive arena with boards and skis. Congratulations to all the competitors who trained hard to achieve the host of outstanding results this year. Open Board and Ski Our ski relay team of Lachlan Tame, Gordon Jones and Ben Hamilton were in fine form this year claiming the Gold medal at Branch, Bronze at State and a hotly contested Silver at Aussies. Lachy and Gordo reckoned that Hammo will have to do a bit of work on his sprint training to achieve gold in the relay next year. Our second relay team of Pete Mitchell, Mitch Braund and Trent Martin secured Bronze at Branch but didn’t achieve the same luck at State or Aussies in the challenging conditions against some strong competition. In the double ski, Lachlan and Ben took out Gold at Branch with Pete Mitchell and Gordo claiming Silver and Matt Jones paddling with Mitch Braund to claim the Bronze. Pete and Gordon won the Gold at State and were finalists at Aussies. Lachlan and Ben were edged out of the gold medal at Aussies and came away with the Silver medal. Our single ski paddlers raced with great success this year with Lachlan, Ben, Gordon, Daniel Shade and Pete taking out the top five places at Branch. Ben paddled a great race at State to win the Silver medal and then at Aussies, Lachlan powered through an extremely tough field of professional competitors to claim the Gold medal for his historic back to back Australian single ski title. Mitch
Page 28
Braund scored the worst luck of the surf gods in State and Aussies to get through to the second and third rounds and paddling into the top four or five, paddling all the way only to be overtaken near the line by six back markers who came through on a wave with Mitch knocked out both times. Our Taplin team of Lachlan Tame and Ben Hamilton ski, Chris Parker and Trent Martin swim, and Daniel Shade and Riley Fitzsimmons board won Gold at Branch and had a great win for the Gold medal at State. It was great to see that some of our older open board and ski competitors were also competing in the Masters events winning a bagful of medals for Avoca with a few comeback names among them like – Matt Jones, Corey Myers, Matt Mitchell, Faggy and the Gee brothers. The open mixed double was contested by Mitch Braund and Annie Paterson for the Silver medal at branch and they had a great race against some hot competition at Aussies. In the open board races this season, we saw Daniel Shade win Gold and Trent Martin paddle into fifth place. At the Aussies, Daniel Shade had a sensational result coming home in third place for the Bronze medal against the cream of Australian board paddlers and after the race he reckoned it was worth the effort of the last 6 weeks of training! This training also paid off handsomely with an outstanding win in the board rescue for Chris Parker and Daniel Shade taking out the Gold medal at the Aussies. Daniel and Chris have been competing in the board rescue together since their early years in nippers and have won every race in this event from club nipper competition through to Aussie Open Gold. Junior Board and Ski Our junior ski and board paddlers achieved some outstanding results this season. In the U17, our female competitors achieved some great results. Kaitlyn Matuschka, Cody-Leigh Callaghan and Amy Annabel coming in first, second and fourth in the board at branch. Cody-Leigh was a board finalist at State and Kaitlyn a board finalist at Aussies. The three girls

A sensational effort was made by Michael Bain to win the Gold medal for the U17 surf board riding at Branch and Aussies. Congratulations to the other open and junior board and ski paddlers – Corey Myers, Matt Smith, Brad McCloghry, Amy Annabel, Luke Pearce, Josh Barnes, Blake Arahill and Kieran Richardson for all the dedicated training and good results achieved by all. Best of luck to everyone next season. Trevor Tame, Craft Captain – Avoca Beach SLSC
Gym Report The past year has been one of consolidation in the Gym. Our contract with Concept 2 has seen the rowers kept in good condition. Similarly, our contract with Fitness First has seen two visits to keep the spin bikes in good order. On behalf of all members, I would like to thank Rod Power and Grant Russell for the countless hours they have spent keeping our Gym clean and tidy and more importantly hygienic, for all of us.

Riley Fitzsimmons had an outstanding year taking out Gold in the board and ski at Branch, Gold in the ski and Bronze in the board relay with Brad McCloghry and Blake Arahill at State and a sensational Gold in the board at Aussies, along with stepping up to take his place in the successful open taplin team winning Gold at Branch and State.

The junior boys also had a great summer with Robbie Annabel taking home medals at branch and achieving great results in the tough conditions at State and Aussies in the U19 board and ski and also teaming up with Ryan Moate in the double ski for a Silver medal at Branch and making the finals at State.
It should also be noted by all Gym users that both Rod and Grant have had their own health issues this year but nonetheless turn up 3 times a week to clean and disinfect our Gym and its equipment. Please say “Thanks” when you see them. Bob Dorrell has been good enough to put together a budget for a metal roof over the outside of the Gym. It is very expensive indeed, over $12,000, and the cost of labour, Council Application and Engineering fees are yet to be added. Members of the Executive have privately expressed their view that the cost is too high and should be put on hold. Unfortunately OH&S considerations are a serious reality and I have called for tenders from Shade Sail Manufacturers to get a handle on an alternative for members. The cost of such a structure looks to be in the order of $5,000 which is very pleasing indeed. It is my intention to move acceptance at the AGM, so if you get a chance, ask your friendly Executive Member to give us some support. During the year we have had the unfortunate burden of a significant number of people gaining access to the Gym, some with approval, some without, and leaving our facility in a disgraceful condition. With the CCTV system down for the count, we were frustrated to find that identification of the offenders was out of our grasp but with the reintroduction of the CCTV footage it is our intention to identify the abusers and seek the withdrawal of their Gym membership and privileges. Remember, the Gym is a first class facility and with very few rules to follow:

BOAT CAPTAINS REPORT The season of 2011/2012 was certainly the year of the Grease Monkey, and they have showed the rest of Australia just how good they really are. Richard Brierty’s driving force behind the boys has really stood out during their brilliant season in the boat, from the mouth of an old boatie, The Zom, The Grease Monkeys are by far the best U19 crew that he has ever seen. He is probably right, he has seen a lot junior crews in his time, but let’s not forget The Helmets. I would have loved to see these two crews race each other. The Grease Monkeys have certainly had a successful year and it stands out when you look at their results over the season. Hopefully boys you will continue to row for another year, I know there are some U23 girls crews out there that hope you do. Other crews that started the season were Jimmy Mitchell’s U19 crew, The Crabs and Dave Maguire’s U23 girls, Avoca Havoc, they never finished the season which was a shame. My work commitments took me to WA in November so I didn’t get to a lot of carnivals, Dave Maguire stepped in and helped out as much as he could with some of the duties, thanks for your help Dave. The Masters section had four crews competing. The Silvertails didn’t have too many rows this season, State and Aussies, unfortunately no success at either. The Zippers had their usual up and down year, winning some and losing some. At least they had a regular sweep, Dave Miller came across from Ocean Beach to tackle the Zippers, sometimes I thought that was what he was going to do, tackle them. The Tweakers had a new member this year, Johnny Mitchell took over Andy Hoban’s seat. Every now and then Johnny would make comment about the Tweakers, we had to remind him on a number of occasions that he was a Tweaker now. Just remember Johnny you’re only as old as the guys you row with, I don’t know if that makes you feel any better considering you row in the oldest age division. This brings us down to The Zuluz’, the girls had their usual year rowing in their masters division and also giving the open women’s division a go when they could, they ended up with good results for the season.

This year saw a new Clymer in the shed, thanks to Raine and Horne and The National Australia Banks kind sponsorship. The boat bears the name of the late Jim Harpur, a life member, ex-president, old boatie. As you know Jim had a long association with the club and it was only fitting to have his name on the boat. The new boat made it to State and Aussies and the Grease Monkeys were successful at both. It also made it to the boaties convention and was hung off the ceiling, I’m pretty sure that would have put a huge smile on Jim’s face if he could have seen it. To all the officials that are involved, a big thank you for yet another year on the beach, and also to all the guys that organise and run the Peters Series, such a great series which enables crews from the Coast and the Hunter to introduce new crews to the sport. To our sponsors, Michael, Brett and Garth Hunter, thank you for all your input this year and for bringing on board a new sponsor in The National Australia Bank. I hope our association with Raine and Horne and The NAB is a long and successful union for years to come. In closing for the last time, (I know I said it last year, but I am standing down this year, I can’t be in two States at once unfortunately and it makes it very hard to be the Boat captain when you’re on the other side of Australia), I have thoroughly enjoyed being the Boat captain over the past five years, the people that I have been associated with off and on the beach over that period is something that remains with you forever. I go back over the past five Aussies, whether it was a medal that you came home with or just competing and giving it your best, it makes me very proud to be part of this club and to have been your Boat captain. Cheers. Warwick Pearce, Boat Captain (CBC) – Avoca Beach SLSC

On 18 March 2012 at 9.25am the 20th HUNTERS Rocks to Rocks photo was taken under the clock at the Club House before the walk to North Avoca and commencement of the 20th swim back to the Avoca rocks. At North Avoca, because of the size of the seas and the existence of a significant rip, the start from the beach was moved approximately 100m further south than normal. The first buoy being in the normal place, some swimmers who had missed the rip had a long swim to the north to go around the first buoy. Once out into the green water, the swim was most enjoyable. Most swimmers’ times were a minute longer than they expected and previous years. Dr Geoff Norrie was in attendance in the North Avoca 4WD along the beach parallel to the swimmers, in radio communication with the jet ski, four IRB’s and water safety, with approximately 20 board paddlers and 15 ski paddlers who were most appreciated by the swimmers. First back to Avoca was Chris Parker in 20.43 minutes. His previous first was in 1998 in 16.36 minutes. Second back was Don Boland in 21.28 minutes, then Riley Fitzsimmons in 22.27 minutes and Luke Pearce in 22.29 minutes. First woman in was Kaitlyn Matuschka in 25.38 minutes. There were a number of close times requiring a run up the beach. Over the 20 years there have been 691 individual swimmers registered, with a total of 2,051 swims being completed, and only 6 “did not finish”. Greg Byrne completed his 20th swim (the only swimmer to have swum in every event) coming 9th in 25.40 minutes.

HUNTERS Rocks to Rocks 2012
Ten swims have been completed by 48 recipients who received a framed photo of Avoca Beach, taken by Graham Love:Greg Byrne, Craig Anderson, Michael Hunter, Mick Foley, Bill Franklin, Mick Kendal, David O’Grady, Jim McAtamney, John Roderick, Helen Jackman, Steven Jung, David Lowe, Les Sinfield, Maurie Lynam, Kristy McQueen, Daniel Ryan, Rick Parsons, Erin Braund, Rob Burns, Julie Fitzsimmons, Craig Hunter, Garth Hunter, Wayne Ludlam, Tony Curran, Brian Dillon, Jeff Smith, Simon Andrew, Jeff Barnes, Peter Burnicle, Tony Burrell, Greg Cook, Jeff Doyle, Bruce Fitzsimmons, Gordon Jones, Nan Jones, Stuart Paterson, Trevor Tame, Liza Whitfield, Paul Johnston, Barry Tuddenham, Ava Bourke, Darren Clarke, Brett Hunter, Howard Jones, Rob Steller, Steve Tatham, Ross Johnston and George Spencer. After the BBQ at 12 noon, upstairs in the Club House the Life Members of Avoca SLSC and North Avoca SLSC were joined by the Avoca Ladies Auxiliary Life Members to present Certificates and Polo shirts to the swimmers. The 2012 Polo shirt had an extra embroidery celebrating the 20th swim. At the conclusion of the presentation, a wonderful historical photo was taken of all those who had received the 20th Polo shirt, which included the swimmers, life members of both clubs, water safety and Ladies Auxiliary. Our thanks to our two Presidents, Garry Clarke and Rick Parsons, who helped considerably to the successful running of the day.

Masters Report This season saw Avoca Beach Masters take a new direction, with the formation of a Masters Committee in an attempt to foster interest and more members amongst those over 30 within the Club. Our thanks to the committee members for their efforts this year: Jeff Smith - Coordinator; Sharon Brierty - Training Coordinator; David O’Grady - Training Coordinator; Jim McAtamney - Training Coordinator; Trevor Tame - Gear; Pauline Priest - Social Coordinator; Ian Gillespie - Photographer/promotions; Dan Ryan Touring Manager; Anita Jung - Administration, carnival entries, newsletters; Graham Ball - Support. There is one particular committee member who does more than the rest of us combined. Anita Jung is the glue that holds a sometimes fragile group together. As usual another brilliant job, thanks. It was great to see some of our former young guns who became Masters and competed at Branch, State and Australian titles. Trent McLuckie, Leslie Parker, Trevor Gee, Gary Gee, Matt Jones, joining Gordon Jones, who had an outstanding season and Matt Mitchell. Looking to the future, planning is underway to send a contingent to Rescue 2012, (World Masters) in Adelaide, November 2012. The season started with a social game of tennis followed by a BBQ, which was lots of fun, and then it was into training and off to carnivals. Pacific Palms and Fingal Bay The annual treks to Pacific Palms and Fingal Bay were on again, these being good social and competitive carnivals, with many staying the weekend. After several years of not being title holders of the famed Toilet Seat Trophy (Pacific Palms), Avoca Beach claimed victory. Pacific Palms saw the comeback of Dave Broadbent to competition, who in true Broadbent style, casually claimed success in all his events. Unfortunately as is the life of a Master, injuries occur and this year was no exception with Christine Brickhill and
Steve Jung coming home with injuries. Bandages and ice packs did the job! Killcare Carnival A very big swell forced the ski events and most team events to be cancelled. However, for the brave i.e. Jimmy Mac, Dan Ryan and Matthew Gibbs, the conditions were perfect if not slightly dangerous. Nutty Masters This year, Nutty Masters was run as an afternoon event to encourage an increase in numbers. As usual a fun day was had by all and for once both weather and sea conditions were kind. Door Knock The annual fundraiser for the Club was once again well supported by the Masters and we successfully raised funds for the planned purchase of further equipment for the forthcoming years. Avoca Masters would also like to the thank The Lizards for their support and part contribution of their fundraising activities. Our thanks to all those who supported this major fundraiser whether by collecting or counting and our special thanks goes to Masters Member, Jim McAtamney for coordinating the event for the Club. Central Coast Branch Championships – Ocean Beach, 18 February 2012 It was great to see so many people turn up. Some of our past greats: Phil Gee, Stuart Paterson and Trevor Gee. Plus current champions in Dog, Jim McAtamney, Nigel Tebb and the return to serious competition by David Broadbent. Finally the turn out by our female competitors was great and the future is looking rosy with a batch of 30 year olds on their way next year. A special mention to our Boaties for cleaning up in their area (valuable points). In the women’s events Lesley Parker who in her first Masters carnival picked up 4 medals (1 gold, 2 silver and a bronze) from 4 events and Kristy McQueen who also picked up a swag of medals, 6 in total (1 gold, 3 silver and 2 bronze), along with her sister Sharon Brierty with 5 medals (1 gold and

4 silver). And let’s not forget the contribution made by Mandy Matuschka, Molly, Jacki, Pauline and the evergreen Wendy Norman who picked up all 3 coloured medals.
With the location being in far north NSW, and so close to the Australian Championships, saw very few making the trek north: Garth Hunter, Michael Hunter and Corey Myers, plus the boaties, did us proud. Australian Titles – Kurrawa, 26 March - 1 April 2012 The young guns stood up and did us proud! Their enthusiasm was amazing and the results speak for themselves. Special mention to Gordon Jones, who won 2 gold medals and then went on to compete at Opens with a 2nd in the ski relay and making the finals of the double ski. Corey Myers, despite not having been able to train much this season, went in everything, winning the board rescue and making the finals in all his events; Trent McLuckie,
Earlier in the year we farewelled a stalwart of the Club, Jim Harpur, and then, the end of an era came with the death of Bryce Norman, a much loved legend for everyone within the Club. His joy and enthusiasm for the Club, was paramount throughout his life, and I sign off in the words of the great Bristo: “The enjoyment you get out of the Club, and the people you meet are terrific,” he would say. “It’s been a lot of fun over the years, we’ve been very lucky.” Jeff Smith, Masters Coordinator – Avoca Beach SLSC

NSW State Titles – Kingscliff, 8 March 2012
Despite the training, fun and social side of the Avoca Masters season, the season was twinged with sadness and worry, as one of our main committee members and a stalwart of Avoca Masters, contended with sickness within his family. Dave O’Grady’s daughter, diagnosed with leukaemia in May 2011, underwent a bone marrow transplant in December (with thanks to the International Bone Marrow list, a donor was found in Germany), and thereafter battled many infections. Sarah’s fight came to an end in May this year and our thoughts are with the family.
ab
The Avoca value of “teamsmanship’’ was demonstrated throughout the day. So many Club members turned up for the team events, participating wherever possible. It was good to see such numbers for Branch. The downside of this fun day was the injury to Nigel Tebb who up to that point was having an awesome day and also Trevor Tame. Nigel’s calf tear means he is now a fully qualified Master. A painful way to enter the ranks.

In the men’s events our two old stalwarts led the medal charge. Jimmy Mac with 8 medals (5 gold, 3 silver) and Dog with 6 (2 gold and 4 silver). Graham Ball won his first branch medals and what a bounty (4 gold and 2 silver). The Hunter boys all bagged medals with Garth the most successful with 6 (4 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze). As usual on the beach James Reeves bagged the double in the sprint and flags and would have had the trifecta of golds in the relay if he hadn’t had to rely on swimmers who drop batons. The return of the prodigal son, David Broadbent saw him pace himself throughout the day to pick up 4 medals (1 gold, 3 silver).
in his first masters competition, competed with style and brought home a gold and bronze medals; Ben Hamilton performed with his usual grace and brought home gold in the individual ski; Trevor Gee came home with a 3rd, 5th and 6th! In a demonstration of their true support for Masters, both Trent McLuckie and Trevor Gee led the charge in the Sprint Relay taking the team to a 6th in the final (Trent McLuckie, Trevor Gee, Jeff Smith, Graham Ball). The older Masters held up their end, with Jeff Smith, Matt Mitchell, Murray Iles, Graham Ball, Greg Cook, Doug Jorgenson all coming home with medals. Once again, the Boats – Zuluz and Tweakers came home with medals and their efforts are to be commended. Special mention also to the boatie-turned-flags competitor at Aussies, Tony Wilson, who narrowly missed making the finals in flags.

oc av
What an amazing year by our kids, where they went within 5.5 points of winning all carnivals they entered, only pipped at the post by this small margin by Manly at the All Age State Championships with a fantastic 2nd place. Credit must go to all our children for their commitment, attitude, dedication and achievements this season. To our departing U14’s, best of luck with all your future endeavours, whether that be in surf lifesaving or other areas, but we look forward to seeing you on the beach patrolling and competing next season with the senior club. Thanks for all your dedication to Nippers over many years. Once again the season has flown by. The feats of the children that compete at all levels of competition continues to amaze me. Not just those kids winning medals, but to those kids that continue to battle and improve year after year well done and those little Nippers with those massive smiles and desire in their little eyes that turn up each Sunday. Avoca Nippers won 3 out of 3 branch Nipper carnivals, and won the Branch Championships held at Umina Beach this season. I could not go without noting that the kids won these carnivals by nearly 500 points each carnival. As already mentioned above, a 2nd place at the 2012 All Age State Championships held at Cudgen Headland SLSC was a sensational way to finish this season. Congratulations to all those kids that excelled at State this season with 35 of our 72 starters gaining medals which is an outstanding achievement. Also to all those kids that made finals at State, it too is an amazing effort. Some highlights from the State carnival though would have to be:– 1. All Age Board Relay side – 1st place 2. All Age Sprint Relay side – 3rd place 3. Macy Callaghan – 1st U11 Board, 1st U11 Surf, 1st All Age Board Relay, 2nd U11 Ironwoman, 2nd U11 Board Relay, 3rd U11 Board Rescue 4. Keeley Booth – 1st U12 Board Rescue, 2nd U12 Surf, 3rd U12 Ironwoman, 3rd U12 Cameron Relay, 3rd U12 Surf Team, 3rd U12 Board Relay 5. Zac Paterson – 1st U11 Ironman, 1st U11 Board, 1st U11 Board Relay, 1st U11 Surf Team 6. U11 Board Relay Team – 1st place and still undefeated in any competition for 3 seasons 7. U9 Girls Age Group – amazing results for their first year in the water – 1st U9 Swim Team, 1st U9 Board Relay, 1st Swim, 1st and 2nd Board Read further for all the amazing results from State and Branch Carnivals. During any season you require many hands to ease the workload, but Sonya Walters and Damien Benson gave so much time to ensure that this season happened and was a success. Thank you so much Son and Bens and looking forward to more good times next season.
To the other members of the Nippers Committee, thank you for your assistance throughout Season 2011/2012 as without you it would not be possible. To all our other helpers a massive thank you too, whether it be slaving over the BBQ, on the beach, officials, water safety, fundraising or helping in the uniform room, the Nippers could not continue without your help. A huge emphasis again was placed on coaching this season. We continued to build on the improvements from the previous season with the continuation of ironperson and beach coaching, and the introduction of surf swim training. It is a priority of the current committee to provide training groups for all competency levels in the water, whether that be board or swim. With huge numbers turning up for all training sessions, a special thanks must go to all our coaches, as the time you all put in for our kids is amazing, and the dedication and commitment you show them is second to none. This is highlighted in the Nippers continued outstanding results. The Committee for Season 2012/2013 has now been elected, and I would like to thank those new bodies for their commitments for next season. We again look forward to another successful year, where we continue to progress forward. Any suggestions on ways to improve are always appreciated and we welcome the input of parents from all age groups. Lastly, thanks to our Nippers for allowing me to be involved and being a part of their development and achievements. Cheers boys, cheers girls.

VALE – JAMES HARPUR 08/09/1926 – 24/08/2011 Jim arrived on the scene at Avoca Beach in the late 40’s visiting family and friends residing at North Avoca. He joined the Avoca Beach Surf Club at the start of the season in October 1951 and completed his bronze medallion in December. He continued to weekend commute to his new club, until he settled into the family home he built at North Avoca in 1953. Jim gained his instructors certificate in 1956, the same year he became club captain. He was honoured with life membership in 1966. Jim was a fierce competitor, a great clubman and a leader. He paddled the double ski, rowed the surf boat in the A crew for ten years, loved a challenged in the pillow fight and in the team events, such as chariot races and tug-o-war. He was the standard bearer in the march past for many years, and proudly carried our flag in State, Australian and two World Surf Lifesavings Championships. Through his involvement with Gosford Swimming Club, Central Coast Leagues and Youth Club and Erina Rugby League, Jim recruited many to be members of the surf club. He had the ability to seek outside finances (now called sponsorship) helping the club to balance the books and he was a master of the beach lunchtime raffles. Jim was loyal to anybody who was known to him, he had a aura of supremacy, he was our leader, a person you would trust, a person who we all looked up to, Jim turned boys into men.
VALE – BRYCE DANIEL NORMAN ”BRISTO” 01/01/1925 – 23/03/2012
Bryce the farmer from Kincumber to the outstanding lifesaver not only for Avoca Beach Surf Lifesaving Club, but the Central Coast Branch and NSW State Centre. Bryce had various employments, throughout his 87 years. Farming the Norman family land at Kincumber, to a sailor during World War II, back to farming with his young family on Ridgeway Road and linesman for the county until he retired. Bristo joined AB SLSC in December 1939, completed his qualification certificate three months later on 17 March 1940. After the war Bryce obtained his bronze in February 1946, he gained his instructors and examiner’s certificate soon after. Bryce was a valued member not only for his competitive team spirit at surf carnivals but his conscientious duty to patrol and safe guard our beach. He became Club Captain in the 1954/1955 season and held that office for 6 seasons. Bryce was honoured with Life Membership in 1962. In the 1963/1964 season Bryce became President until 1979/1980, 17 years of leading our club through an era of change, not only social, but physically in Avoca and the lifesaving movement. Throughout this time Bryce worked tirelessly for our club and became a most valued member of the Central Coast Board of Examiners and NSW State Centre. He was honoured with Life Membership of the Branch and the Central Coast Juniors (Nippers) in 1974/1975, then NSW State Centre in the 1980/1981 season. Bryce was a person who could relate to all, he had time, and everybody was important to him. Bryce respected you. Throughout his life he gave physical help, advice and guidance to hundreds of surf lifesavers, friends and neighbours. We are in debt to Bryce, a debt unfortunately we cannot repay. Bristo was our mentor and his memories will stay with us for our lifetime.
AVOCA BEACH SLSC farewells two of our finest Cheers boys and girls!
