The cool thing about going to a college that’s on the coast is that you can surf in the morning and still make it to class on time. Or you may show up to class and end up going to the beach anyway. Well, actually the bay, but still, it’s water. Flagler College offers a Coastal Environmental Science major, which is very convenient, given our location.
One particular Environmental Science class got the opportunity to wade into the water to collect fish for a lab. During this trip, dolphins were spotted, and a cannonball jellyfish (shown to the right) was accidentally caught. Not something you get to experience in a classroom, or at a college that’s not five minutes from the beach.

Ain’t no party like a block party. Not a real block party. An art block party. With actual wooden blocks. Flagler students in Relief Printmaking designed, drew, and carved graphics onto huge pieces of MDF wood (as well as smaller blocks). These pieces were then rolled with ink and stamped onto t-shirts, bed sheets, or paper — whatever you may fancy! It’s an exciting event that happens every fall semester. Be sure to hang on to a couple of spare t-shirts or sheets for this party!
It’s easy to feel lost in a new town, at a new school. So of course Flagler students used that feeling in an art project. Type Studio students took to the streets with the intention of showing the town how important typography really is. Choosing the word ‘Identity’ to describe
typography, the group of three students made the word out of cardboard, then covered it in “Hello, My Name Is” stickers. Passers-by could then write their name on a sticker, interacting with the installation and becoming a part of the identity of the city of St. Augustine.
There’s something fun about being in a small town. Everyone is friendlier and more laid back, it’s not impossible to get anywhere, and most everything is within walking distance. Plus, there are all sorts of events that take place here: First Friday Art Walk, Nights of Lights, and numerous fairs and festivals. Did we mention there’s always good music and food, pretty much everywhere you look? Yeah, we’re down for that, too.

Final exams can be a trying time: you forget to eat, you survive off of coffee, and you haven’t showered for days. Stressed to the max, there has to be some outlet. Thankfully, Flagler College knows that, and wants to provide some
relief. Bring in the friendly dogs and fun activities! Roll around in a human-sized hamster ball, run through an obstacle course, color in coloring books, and be kissed free of anxiety by pups. It’s all you could ask for (plus pizza).
We know it’s a bit early to be thinking about college, and we don’t want to stress you out. But it’s really great here, and we think you’d like it (it is as amazing as we make it seem, by the way).
