A Message from the Chair of the Women of Vision Advisory Board

MISSION The mission of the Women of Vison Fund is to provide scholarships and opportunities for women who attend Flagler College, to engage women at special Flagler College events, and to establish strong ties and connections with women to Flagler College, our exceptional students, and our extraordinary campus.

A goal of the Women of Vision Fund is to teach both donors and scholarship recipients that paying it forward is a way of life and has a positive impact on the College, the community, and the nation at large. Young women who attend Flagler College will be empowered to make a difference by both receiving and giving. Opportunities afforded to the Women of Vision scholarship recipients at Flagler College shape their lives to be the next generation of leaders. VISION Our vision for the Women of Vision Fund is to create educational and leadership opportunities for women at Flagler College. We seek to harness the collective power of women to raise money for a significant endowment fund, as well as an operational revenue source to generate funding for scholarships and educational opportunities for women at Flagler College. YOU CAN HELP Big or small, your contribution to the Women of Vision Fund is an investment in talented, deserving young women who attend Flagler College. Your gift helps them to achieve, to compete, to realize their dreams and, someday, to help and inspire others.

Ninety percent of Flagler students receive financial assistance, and there has been a significant rise in the number of students with financial need. While institutional aid for female students has increased, the number needing financial aid remains higher than the total amount of aid available. Your gift makes a difference at Flagler. Every gift counts. THE SEED WAS PLANTED Flagler College’s heritage is closely linked with the history of Florida through the life of Henry Morrison Flagler, oil magnate, railroad pioneer and land developer. The College was founded in l968 by Lawrence Lewis, one of Flagler’s principal heirs, as a small, private college for women and opened its doors to 160 female students. In 1971, it officially became a coeducational institution, and in 1972 graduated its first class of 34, of whom 31 were women. Today, sixty-three percent of the 2,500+ Flagler students are women.

The establishment of a women’s fund at Flagler College was another step in expanding and strengthening the support of Flagler College well into the future. A graduate of the first class, Dr. Beverly Copeland Carmichael worked with Robin Cooper, Chair, to spearhead the effort to launch the Women of Vision Fund and to organize the Advisory Board, comprised of community volunteers. It was their vision that a substantial endowment fund be established to provide scholarships for accomplished female students in need of financial assistance. Such a fund is a legacy gift which continues to give, year after year.

MAY 18, 2017

Welcome to the third annual Power of the Purse®. It always amazes me to see this dining hall filled with successful women whose passions include higher education for young women. In almost every way, higher education should provide equal opportunity for both men and women, but we know that’s not the case. Back in the 18th century, English writer and publisher Samuel Richardson observed “the difference in the education of men and women must give the former great advantages over the latter, even where geniuses are equal.” Our shared mission here is to try to change that and we see these four amazing women as agents for that change. Recently I had the pleasure to get to know this year’s Women of Vision scholarship winners and spent a memorable evening with them. We had meaningful conversations about their lives. These young women are extraordinary in so many ways and are already making a difference in our world. After spending some time with them, I came away with a refreshed and even stronger faith in the importance of what we are doing with Women of Vision. We are achieving our mission, one by one, scholarship by scholarship. These remarkable scholarship recipients are kind and compassionate, yet driven to pursue their dreams and create lives they really want. While they are ambitious to achieve their goals, success to them is much more than careers – they want meaningful lives and want to help others during their quests. They are grounded, yet have vision, and are realizing their inner strengths to dream and do. With Women of Vision, we are truly empowering these remarkable young women to make a difference. The opportunities afforded by Women of Vision scholarships are helping to shape their lives. I deeply appreciate your participation and generosity today. In closing, I will quote former Secretary-General of the United Nations, Ban Ki-Moon, commenting on the benefits to society of gender equality. “Countries with higher levels of gender equality have higher economic growth. Companies with more women on their boards have higher returns. Peace agreements that include women are more successful.” We hope that the opportunity we have given these four women empowers them to tackle these challenges for the benefit of all of us. Thank you.

Sincerely,

2

Susan Abare truly is “the First Lady of Flagler College.” She is also a wife, a mother, a grandmother, a teacher and a strong community advocate. Susan is completely devoted to her husband, President Bill Abare, and to her family. There is never a question that they come first in her life, though she has generously given her time, talents, skills and leadership to her church, to Flagler College and to the Women of Vision. Susan helped to plan and develop the Presbyterian Day School at her beloved Memorial Presbyterian Church, where she sings in the choir every Sunday. She gave up her career as an elementary school teacher when Dr. Abare became President in 2001 and embraced her role by his side. She started “Mrs. Abare’s Tea,” a favorite spring event for College donors. Her husband calls her an unsung hero. We agree. We have all been inspired by her classic elegance, kindness and unwavering dedication to Flagler College, to Bill and to her family. With her quiet strength and grace, she is our example of the perfect First Lady – she meets and greets all with unmatched warmth and genuine interest. Susan enriches our lives, and we cherish her friendship, her generous spirit and her beautiful smile. She has done much for Flagler College and the community of St. Augustine. As Bill describes her, “She gets it. She is Golden.” We agree. She is our golden girl. Hope Katherine Carmichael

From the time she arrived, she has been an inspiration to me. I often wondered how I got so lucky to have her as my daughter. Her sense of fairness and her wisdom, for such a young girl, always amazed Don and me. She has been our hero over the years. She opened her heart and her home to her three adopted sisters and amazed our family and community with her generosity and understanding. I am touched by her compassion and her unbridled love of animals, and I am continually amazed by her intelligence. Her accomplishments are a great source of pride for us, particularly her writing which is articulate and eloquent. Her poetry is sometimes dark, but often lyrical. Her poems have left me stunned, yet yearning for another one. After college, she promptly headed for New York City, where she made her own way and found her niche. She has a song in her heart, and is great fun. Every day I am deeply thankful for her!

Judith Ann Foley

I am honored to have my mother, Judith Ann Foley, sitting beside me at an event that I helped to coordinate. Her professional achievements in event planning, advertising and sports marketing continue to have an impact on the industry today, and I am very proud of that. My mother has always passionately supported me in everything I have ever done, even if it meant sacrificing something for herself. Her love for her granddaughters is endless. I know this is the real reason she finally retired and moved to Florida! When I graduated from Flagler College with my Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, my mother gave me a beautiful hand written letter I had framed. She wrote, “Women are naturally going to rise up and go against you in business. Stay true to your character yet don’t be afraid to change the world. You will have a handful of true friends in life - However I will always be your very best one.” Love Your Daughter, Araan Elizabeth Burnett

Lynda H. George

Ann C. King

Lynda H. George is my mother. She grew up in Bethesda, Maryland, just outside of Washington, DC, and later studied History at Agnes Scott College in Atlanta. While there, she met my father who was a student at Georgia Institute of Technology. They were married for 51 years and had three children.

“Every one of us looks back on a coach or a teacher who has set us straight and steered us right. You don’t get to the top of your game or the top of your field or the top of the charts entirely on your own, and I want to celebrate the good people who have helped us get where we’re going.” Denzel Washington, A Hand To Guide Me

My mom has a voracious appetite for reading biographies, playing her piano and planning parties…the bigger the better (at Dad’s 50th birthday party she had the Georgia Tech Marching Band on the roof of our house!) They enjoyed living in various places across the country while growing their medical software company until they retired in St. Augustine in 1997.

Many of the 50+ people in Ann King’s office know how helpful her guiding hand has been in our personal lives, for self-esteem, and for our role in the business world. Some of us think of Ann as “That Girl” the character Marlo Thomas played on TV. Just like Marlo, Ann can do anything: raise three super polite, friendly, successful kids; maintain a lovely marriage and home; and run a great real estate office in a rapidly changing world.

But Lyn George is so much more than the brief bio above. I’d like to share my personal vision of her in this Tribute. As my mom, she is warm and sweet and cuddly and strong, with an intense devotion to her family. She taught me to be the mother I am, and there’s been no better trainer and advisor. She fills my low places in life and celebrates the highs. She gives me strength. As my children’s grandmother, she combines warm nurture, clever humor, genuine care and my personal favorite that the children don’t even notice – guidance with refined and elegant wisdom. This rare gift she gives to them. As my cherished father’s wife, she was forever his heart’s desire. He called her “Darling.” Together they showed me life’s gift of a happy marriage.

Marlo Thomas’s famous father, Danny Thomas, told her, “there were two kinds of people in the world: givers and takers. The takers may eat better, but the givers sleep better.” Ann’s a giver. When values and principals seem to change day to day, Ann King finds the right answers and helps her agents strive to do the right thing. For over seven years now, Ann has set us straight and steered us to be highly regarded professionals, standing by the truth, our families, our faith, and our country. She is our own “That Girl”, providing a trustworthy hand to guide us. We adore you Ann, Saint Augustine BHHS Team

Lyn George is the most incredible medley of grace, style and steely strength that makes me so enormously honored to be her daughter. I love my mom.

Mignon T. Upchurch - Tis

Tis Upchurch first came to St. Augustine when her father was Commander of the Coast Guard Academy during World War II. As a young lady she helped her parents host military guests in their home; this was to be her early start to many years of entertaining family and friends. She would memorize a guest list to greet everyone as if they were an old friend. She never forgot a name or a face. She was known to bake a pan of sticky buns to say “thanks” and cook a pot of chicken soup to say “I hope this helps you feel better.” Tis met her husband Frank during the war in St Augustine. They later married in San Francisco and returned to St. Augustine to raise their four children. Tis was adventurous and loved to travel. In their later years, she and her husband Frank enjoyed boating on the East Coast, the Bahamas and into Canada. They frequently invited friends and family to join them – and as a guest one had to endure her ruthlessness at Scrabble. She was unbeatable, as she had memorized every word beginning with “Q”. She was an accomplished photographer. She had interesting collections of photographs of her children and grandchildren. She also loved to take pictures of natural surroundings and wildlife – some that were accepted in photography magazines. Tis loved a variety of music – she supported the Jacksonville Symphony her home was filled with music. She served on the board of the Trinity Episcopal Learning Center and was a longtime member of the Neal Neighborhood Advisory Board. She frequently opened her home for charitable events and was a generous supporter of Flagler College. She loved the college and it was fitting that her family and friends said their last goodbyes in the Solarium. Tis enriched my life in countless ways. I thank her for being a great mother-in-law and a wonderful friend. I miss her every day. Sandy Upchurch

Margaret M. Wiecking

Margaret M. Wiecking arrived in St. Augustine in June of 1950, beginning a long love for St. Augustine and its residents. A devoted mother to her three children she spent her adult life educating and empowering students in the St. John’s County school system. Her 30+ years teaching career began as the founding third grade teacher at R.B. Hunt Elementary School. She retired from the Florida School for the Deaf and Blind, where she finished out the last fifteen years of her career. Margaret was a graduate of Ward-Belmont College in Nashville, Tennessee and The University of South Carolina, where she was president of Delta Delta Delta sorority. She completed her graduate degree in special education at Florida State University. Our home was always open to any student who needed tutoring to prepare for the college entrance exams. Under our mother’s tutelage many local students went on to become successful attorneys, judges, physicians, and a few politicians. Margaret was very involved in the community as a member of the Pilot Club, Flagler Hospital Auxillary, Trinity Episcopal Church, and the Tri-Delta National Alumni Association. Education was a priority that she passed on to her three children, all of whom have college degrees and advanced degrees. Our mother would be a proud supporter of the Power of the Purse® and of Flagler College. We are pleased to honor her memory. Charles Wiecking Jr. Jill Wiecking-Taylor Terrie Wiecking-Noland
