Foreword
In 2001 (Ghent) and 2013 (Antwerp), Flanders already hosted the Artistic Gymnastics World Championships. 10 years after the last edition, we want to organise another high-quality top sports event.
With more than 120,000 members, gymnastics is a popular sport in Flanders and we are doing very well at the highest level. Team BELGYM proved this with the Olympic team final at the Tokyo Olympics and the Olympic title for Nina Derwael on the women’s uneven bars.
We are really looking forward to giving our own athletes the opportunity to shine in front of their home crowd and aim for a unique experience for every gymnast and spectator.
ILSE ARYS
GENERAL MANAGER GYMFED
Gymnastics is one of the oldest sports in the world and was first practised in ancient Greece, when it was part of the original Olympic Games.
For centuries after the fall of the ancient Greek and Roman empires, gymnastics was largely confined to travelling acrobatic groups and court jesters, who entertained people with their tumbling and tightrope walking.
It was not until the late 18th century that the sport began to develop as we know it today. The introduction of apparatus such as the parallel bars, rings and high bar is attributed to German Friedrich Ludwig Jahn, who promoted exercise for good health.
In the 19th century, gymnastics completely broke through with Sweden developing a variant that emphasised graceful, flowing movements
instead of the more militaristic German style. Finally, both forms of gymnastics would merge into what is known today as ‘artistic gymnastics’.
The Historyof Gymnastics in a Nutshell
When Pierre de Coubertin revived the Olympic Games in 1896, men’s gymnastics was on the programme and has remained a fixture ever since.
The first World Championships took place in Antwerp in 1903. Only a handful of European countries participated and the event was exclusively reserved for men. But from that first competition, the sport grew into the big event we know today.
Women competed for the first time in the 1928 Olympics in Amsterdam, although that was limited to a synchronised group floor exercise, in which the Netherlands took the gold.
The first
World Championships in which women were allowed to compete took place in Budapest in 1934. It was not until the 1952 Olympics in Helsinki that the apparatus and competition format were standardised and all-round and apparatus finals were held for the first time.
Since the 1950s, the sport has continued to evolve, with gymnasts today performing skills that would have been unthinkable 70 years ago. The frequency of World Championships has also increased. Initially, they took place every four years. Since 1979, they have been organised annually, but not in Olympic years. The sport has come a long way since the horse jumpers of ancient Greece!
