JUNE 2015

PHOTO TIP / EDITORS NOTE

Hey skimboarders. We actually made another issue with some photos and words and stuff. Instead of having some heartfelt editor’s note let’s just talk about the cover photo of Adam Balaam at Baker Beach. So many people are using Go Pro’s and wide angles lenses and the skimboarder is so far away. Stop that. Get closer and then get closer. Fill that frame yo!

You don’t need to own a super expensive 70-200mm you can simply use your feet to get where you want. Getting right in the action with a wide angle will create an appealing photo although you might get hit by the board. As you can see in the photo sequence it got very close and his board did tag me in the leg. It kinda hurt, but it was worth it. Anyways, I hope you enjoy the new issue and I will see you at the beach. - Matt McDonald

How’s the skimboarding at this spot? The skim is good most of the time. A lot of times the stream gets curvy so it takes some digging if you want a straight line. Besides that be ready for any weather, its Sf baby, cold as shit. What are the best tides for this skim spot? Any time after 12. The tide rolls out and the stream opens up. Who can you find skimboarding there? Dallas and I for the most part. A lot of times we get some new comers, but they’re getting keen on the etiquette. Any unique features that separate this spot from other beaches? Beside the golden gate… Sometimes a sand bank forms that’s perfect for doing drops off of. Most of the time you can find driftwood to slide too. Anything you need to watch out for? Shells? Glass? Sharks? Bums? Kids, and stuck up Sf parents!! Entitled parents get pretty pissed when they think your getting in their kid’s way. I’d suggest just flashing your box cutter. What are the pros and cons of this skim spot? This spot has amazing scenery and incredible skim. A lot of times it gets pretty windy and cold so bundle up.

Down and Dirty BICK SKIMBOARDS

JAKE BROWN

Who started Bick Skimboards?

Twin brothers Harbor and Duran Bickmore out of St. George Utah.

How did the brand get started?

We started skimboarding at about 16 years old just for fun. After graduating high school we moved to the Dominican Republic on a two year religious hiatus. When we got back we still both loved to skimboard. We also felt like there needed to be more high quality flatland skimboarding media. We are both professional Rollerblades, so we have a background in action sports. We grew up filming each other and making edits so naturally we wanted to do the same with skimboarding. In 2014 we started putting out edits under the name Bick Skimboards. People liked the edits and started asking when we were going to make skimboards so we thought to ourselves “ya know what… why not start making skimboards” When we decided to go for it we didn’t want to just duplicate what was already on the market. We wanted to do something new and better with the shape of the our board as well as the materials used to make them. We pretty much started from scratch, put in a lot of hours of research and product development and now here we are. We are super happy with how things have worked out and what we have done so far.

Has the skim scene in Utah changed since there is now a skimboard brand in the area?

Yeah, for sure. In 2014 We spent the summer filming a skimboarding video called “SO SICK”. All of the local skimboarders got super excited and more dedicated to skimboarding. Everyone was way pumped on filming sick tricks and putting together a section. That momentum has kept up even after the video was finished and we ended up having a skim season that was 11 months long. For sure kids are getting more dedicated around here and a lot of new talent is coming out of St. George.

What are the main products you are offering this year?

Our most popular skimboard is the bamboo pop board. It’s a board made with bamboo and a high quality longer lasting crystallized HPL bottom. We also offer a board called the “first love” that is a more affordable option for kids looking to get into flatland skimboarding as well as advanced riders. Other then that we got T-shirts, extra foam and cork traction, and bags.

Are you planning any video projects this year?

We are currently filming for the 2015 Bick team video called “Cult Leaders”. It will feature some riders from “SO SICK” and some new kids as well. Filming has been ridiculous this season. We are going out to film just about every day, and each rider gets about four or five solid clips a session. We are super happy with the footage we have so far. “SO SICK” was good and we are proud of it, but “Cult Leaders” is going to be insane!

How has the skim community received Bick Skimboards?

It seems to us like the community has been supportive and excited about what we are doing. We set some goals for 2015 as far as where we wanted to be with sales and what not, and we have already passed our goals, so that has been good. The feedback we have gotten on social media and emails has been positive. I’m sure there is someone out there who doesn’t like us, but who cares. Haha.

What can we expect from Bick Skimboards in the future?

More media of course, not just a video but edits along the way. This summer we are going to travel to more competitions in Washington Utah, Texas and California. We are growing faster than we predicted so who knows what the future holds. We are going to stay dedicated and keep helping the sport grow as much as possible. We are also really excited about new talent in skimboarding so we are putting together a flow team to help up and comers get exposure and grow their local scene. Those kids are going to be the future of Bick Skimboards and skimboarding in general.

Skull Skates Skimboards is back to pushing skim on Vancouver beaches with Tim Ladner and Dylan Maranda at the helm. For 2015 Skull Skates Skimboards will be releasing two new boards, the Hatchet and the Hatchet Pro Lam, along with their classic Skate shape and newly renamed Double Cut. Don’t forget all the Skull Skates Skimboards are hand crafted in small batches on Texeda Island BC. Quantities are limited and subject to availability.

The Hatchet Pro Lam is similar to the standard Hatchet skimboard, only it is slightly heavier, and intended for intermediate and advanced riders. This is also a freestyle oriented board and if you are prone to hitting man made obstacles and require a more durable stick this is the one for you. Its increased weight allows for faster rides and more stability on rails and other apparatuses.

OCEAN BEACH, CA

The Pacific Ocean is in San Diego, so there is a ton of skim spots. At high tide a skimboarder is limited though. We made the drive to meet DB Skimboards rider Lexi Hutchings in San Diego to checkout her tide-invisible skim spot. How’s the skimboarding at this spot? A. In San Diego, the skim is great! I have to pay more attention to the tides, which I never had to worry about tin Utah, but the plus is you can skim all year around. What are the best tides for this skim spot? Low tides are usually best for most the beaches to skim. I like to skim at the dog beaches because I have found they have very large sand bars at low tide. This makes for epic skim. Also, I have been fortunate enough to find a place along the jetty (where we took these photos) that is usually always decent, even at high tide... Who can you find skimboarding there? Usually beginners, hah or lots of people always ask to try it. I always skim with my good friend Sara from Utah, but you don’t run into many skimmers. There is a small area called Windency Beach, where a lot of ocean skimmers go... Any unique features that separate this spot from other beaches? DOGS. and they all want to eat, or jump on your board. It’s San Diego so I feel like the beaches are beautiful out here. Coronado beach probably stand out the most... Anything you need to watch out for? Shells? Glass? Sharks? Bums? Etc? A. I would say in some areas bums. Ocean beach has some weirdos. Haha. Pros is you can skim all year around, usually always nice out, good skim spots. The cons are having to watch tide more often and sometimes beaches are way crowded so it can be hard to skim around all the people in the water.

Word on the beach was Kayotics Skimboards was gone. That is not the case and we took a couple minutes to talk with the man himself John Minns. Seems like Kayotics kinda dropped off for a minute there. Is Kayotics really back? We never left. We had a few years where most our original crew was just not able to skim. I think maybe a big part of it was people just expected me personally to keep dropping video parts and riding contests. I think most people make the association as I’ve carried this thing on my back for over 10 years. All my original crew were all growing out of skimboarding and getting real jobs. Hahaha. I think we just needed some time to re-focus and renew our crew and come back at it stronger than before. Will Kayotics have a skim team again? If so, who’s on it this year? We have now separated our team into Team and Legends/Pioneers. I want to make sure the young guns are on a come up and we can showcase them more in video and photos but I also want to make sure we don’t forget the dudes that brought us here. Our Sacramento contingency is on fire with Ruben Guttierez, JD Brown and Trey Conley. Those kids are killing it right now and I see the same passion in them for skimboarding as I did with the original crew down there. In Canada we are finalizing some things with Jack Bender in Ontario so it will be rad to get some love out east. On the west coast we have Oscar Blyth, Connor Broadfoot and Martin Jeffereys. Kayotics has Texas scene and helped get it going with Carey Seyler when they were just getting started so we are continuing to work with riders down there. We currently are sponsoring Nick Reeves who is always dropping some great content. We are also working with Mitchell Lyon who is recovering from an injury but should be dropping some heat this summer I’m sure. When it comes to a team our focus remains the same. We want cool rad dudes who party and skim just like we’ve always done. We’ve been the industry bad asses and I don’t want that to stop.

Our team will be shooting video and photos all season. We don’t have any major motion picture in mind yet but we’ll stack content and drop some bombs throughout the season. Just shorts on instagram and stuff to keep the skim fiends dosed up. The focus is easy for Kayotics and we’ll continue to follow the same recipe. Stoked for the new posse to carry on the legacy of skim, travel and party, in no preferred order. What is the best way for people to snag some new Kayotics gear? Always clutch to support your local retailers. If your local retailers don’t slang Kayotics decks then ask them why. If they still don’t want to carry it tell them they are

SEVENTYONE SKIMBOARDS SeventyOne Skimboards is pushing the European scene to a whole new level. This year though they are starting to make moves abroad. This summer SeventyOne added Canadian skimboarder Anna Penn to the team and American skimboarder Logan Davidson. They also released the Logan Pro for their new top rider in the western hemisphere. SeventyOne has always been a skimboarding force in Europe through their contests and demos and by creating the highest-quality skimboards out there.

DB Skimboards has been skimboarding all year, but they have some big plans this summer. A couple new videos are in the works with Isaac Thomas, Adrien Raza, a big video release with the Goon crew out of California and Freddy and Daniel are working on a new project “Brotherhood. The big news is Adrien Raza, Daniel Priess and Friedrich Flueh are coming to the United States for the DB Pro/ AM! It is easily going to be the best Dash Point skim contest yet. Make sure to be there on July 4th if you can. Naturally there are a ton of new products like Day Trip Skim Bags, the Raza Pro, Thomas Pro and the bad ass skimboard customizer on DBskimboards.com. Anyways, be on the lookout for more rad stuff from DB!
